ith the likelihood of a virtual, remote celebration planned for the Class of 2020, the parents of Edison High School seniors have started a petition “Save EHS Class of 2020 Graduation!!” to delay the graduation celebration until July or August. Schools Superintendent Bernard Bragen, in a weekly video to parents and students on April 28, announced graduation would occur in “some type of virtual or remote fashion.” “We are taking direction from medical professionals and our government officials,” he said of the novel coronavirus pandemic. “At this point, they indicate we will remain closed indefinitely.” Bragen said the Edison Township Public Schools’ administrative staff and the Edison Board of Education are planning the events. “We want to honor our children and do all that we can,” he said. “Although in these difficult times it will be more of a virtual opportunity to recognize those students and staff members as opposed to being in person [in efforts to heed] social distancing requirements as well as to ensure the safety of our community.” The Edison High School Parent Teacher Student Organization (PTSO), on behalf of parents of the graduation class, began a change.org petition to delay the idea of holding a virtual graduation and instead consider a later graduation celebration for “these hardworking Class of 2020 seniors” and give them “a celebration they deserve.” “We understand there is a current stayat-home order due to COVID-19 and we encourage everyone to stay safe, healthy during these times,” the petition states. “However, we are simply asking to consider delaying the graduation celebration to July or even August, if need be, so the (Continued on page 9)

Creative collaborations to create PPE are underway in Middlesex County By KATHY CHANG Staff Writer

M

iddlesex County College’s (MCC) 3D printers usually used by students in the college’s Media Arts and Design programs are being used to create face shields for frontline heroes. Linda Scherr, vice president for academic affairs, said MCC is proud to partner with the county in efforts to assist with fighting the novel coronavirus and helping healthcare workers. County employees will use the 3D printers – one MakerBot and four FlashForge Dreamers – to create face shields and donate them to area hospitals and first responders. The initiative of creating face shields and other personal protective equipment (PPE) with 3D printers is a collaboration between Middlesex County’s Office of Marketing led by Shannon Tambini, Middlesex County’s print team, and New Jersey resident Eric Mewengkang. “The county reached out to us on a [April 16] and by the following Monday, we had our four 3D printers and filament ready for them,” she said. “Scott D’Elia, a media lab coordinator who assists students in using the 3D printers as part of their coursework, has also been helping with the county’s printing initiative. Three of the 3D printers are normally used by students in our Media Arts [and Design] programs and one came from the college library’s Creative Suite. Since the equipment was not in use for classes, the college was very happy to be able to put them to use for the essential task of supporting medical personnel.”

Middlesex County officials are thinking creatively to help combat the shortage of personal protection equipment (PPE) using their own ingenuity and any materials at hand to help protect its local heroes in the face of COVID-19.

Within the first week, Middlesex County’s print team, with guidance from MCC’s staff, produced 200 face shields and 200 surgical mask extenders for frontline workers. All PPE produced will be donated to local hospitals and first responders. The collaboration with MCC is one way Middlesex County officials are thinking creatively to help combat the shortage of PPE using their own ingenuity and any materials at hand to help protect its local heroes in the face of COVID-19. “It’s always inspiring to see our county staff and our residents working together for the benefit of others, but it’s especially important now during this worldwide crisis,” said Middlesex County Freeholder Director Ronald G. Rios. “Witnessing the selfless efforts of these individuals, and the efforts of so many others around the county, I am proud to lead the Middlesex County Board of Chosen Freeholders alongside my fellow freeholder colleagues, but more importantly, proud to call this county home.” With performances postponed until the fall, the talent at George Street Playhouse in New Brunswick is moving from the stage to fashioning face shields and gowns with the use of a 3D printer. Individuals have been working around-the-clock, creatively reusing scrap and household materials, old costumes and other items.

Shannon White, the theater’s prop master, with the help of her associate Sam Ghali, use acetate and rubber bands (no fabric and foam) to make the face shields, which allows the shields to be completely reusable and easily disinfected. The gowns are made of Tyvek material, or paint suit material, and when that runs out, White will use polyester scrap fabrics left over from past theater projects. Playhouse costume shop manager Joleen Addleman Loyd and her assistant Suzann Cornelison are sewing masks using scrap and materials from their own homes. The masks and gowns will be donated to RWJBarnabas Health upon completion. The county collaborated with healthcare systems to create video appeals calling for PPE donations. Participants include Saint Peter’s University Hospital in New Brunswick, Hackensack Meridian Health and Robert Wood Johnson Barnabas

Health. Each video, shared online and broadcasted on local television, features a member of each respective hospital and highlights the needs of those healthcare workers fighting on the front lines. “This call to action is a collaboration between the county and its hospital partners, reinforcing the working relationship between the county and local hospitals that dates back long before the pandemic, and will continue to grow following this state of emergency,” said Rios, who is featured in the videos. Middlesex County’s Fire Academy in Sayreville has been and continues to collect PPE at several locations. The county made a call to residents and business owners to donate PPE at the beginning stages of the pandemic. The county has collected 500 pairs of goggles; 120 face shields; 7,875 surgical masks; 5,000 N95 masks; 700 boxes of gloves; 190 gallons of hand sanitizer; and a new wheelchair and walker. The supplies have made a tremendous impact for first responders, the county’s Office of Health Services and by those administering tests at the county’s two drive-thru COVID-19 testing sites in Edison and South Brunswick. Donations for PPE are still being collected at the Middlesex County Fire Academy, 1001 Fire Academy Dr., Sayreville, and at the First Bilingual Seventh-Day Adventist Church in Middlesex Borough, 111 Howard Ave., Middlesex. Colonia High students from Colonia Cares to help local businesses, food banks By KATHY CHANG Staff Writer

WOODBRIDGE – Gov. Phil Murphy gave a salute to 11 friends from Colonia High School, who have come together as Colonia Cares to sell t-shirts and lawn signs to raise money for a good cause in the wake of the novel coronavirus pandemic. An endeavor that started on April 18 has garnered 500 items sold. “Wow,” the governor exclaimed during

his daily press conference on April 22. Murphy recognized the group from Colonia High School – Harrison Brindley, Emily Christie, Jordan Derkack, Mia Kruysman, Kerri Lishak, Emily Melendez, Nate Manente, Victor Perosi, Antonia Pierce, Jack Reilly and Jose Ribiero – during his #NJThankYou segment. “These are just three of the many, many good news stories,” he said. Like the governor, Woodbridge Mayor John McCormac recognized the group in his daily report on April 22.

In addition, McCormac recognized the township’s senior citizen bus drivers and Coordinator Diane Mantagas for quietly bringing meals to seniors and taking them to doctor visits. “They are just one of the many groups of township workers who are really making a difference in the lives of our residents who are the most vulnerable during this crisis,” he said.

All the proceeds are turned into gift cards from local stores and restaurants, which are then donated to a local food banks as well as Woodbridge Social Services. McCormac said the proceeds help the businesses and the residents. “They raised so much money so soon that they are expanding the effort to the entire township,” he said. “They will probably hit $10,000 within a few days. … With young adults like you, there is no doubt that our future looks pretty bright after all. Girl Scouts at Home program provides activities for all girls during self isolation period

T

he Girl Scouts At Home program has launched, presented via new website pages that will direct parents and teachers to tutorials, step-by-step badge programs and livestream events. A starter list of programs being offered includes outdoor adventures that can be done while social distancing, science badge activities, engineering paper airplanes, art apprentice, photo magic and computer coding work, tailored to be age-appropriate for ages 4-8, according to Ginny Marino, CEO of the Girl Scouts of Central and Southern New Jersey (GSCSNJ). These programs can be done independently or as a family. The tutorials are written so that those interested do not need to have any background or knowledge of Girl Scouts to complete the activities, she said. In addition to the independent work, GSCSNJ will offer the following live virtual programs: • Every Friday at 7 p.m., a virtual campfire get-together for girls and families to sing songs and listen to stories. The livestream event will be hosted by a different Girl Scout camp each week. • Monday through Thursday nights at 7 p.m., a program for all ages will be offered, including campfire building, foil dinner packets, collage fun, painting inspirational rocks, upcycling a t-shirt, a dance party, yoga and more. • Monday to Friday at 2 p.m., a specific age-level program will take place. uring this very difficult time of uncertainty, one thing remains the same – the strength of our community. Like many of you, our thoughts and prayers are with our neighbors, family and friends who may have lost someone they love or who may be battling this virus themselves. This is a difficult time for all of us and I think most have experienced or at least witnessed things that perhaps a year ago we could not have imagined such as the loss of life, unemployment rates this high, and a pandemic that may very well

permanently change our lives. Perhaps it should permanently change the way we live? Perhaps the silver lining in all of this will be that once the fierce grip of this pandemic has softened, we will emerge having learned some valuable lessons that from those lessons will come positive changes. I teach my children that every loss or failure is an opportunity to learn, and that with determination, perseverance and some conviction we can emerge stronger and better than ever before. This is certainly one of those situations. At a minimum, I think it already has given us an opportunity to reflect and think about how we live and the choices we make. The COVID-19 crisis has caused an unprecedented level of emotional, social, financial and physical stress for the nation as a whole.Despite the immense stress, and in the face of overwhelming odds and adversity, I’m inspired by, and grateful for, the bravery and courage of our front line health care providers and other essential workers that are helping us all get through this crisis. This pandemic has made us think and act in the best interest of our neighbors, friends and family. This pandemic, like many crises before, has made us think about our neighbors’ situation and what they may be going through, and most importantly how we can help. My company, ProFysio Physical Therapy, is, fortunately for the patients we serve and our team members, deemed essential and continues to operate with limited hours and the implementation of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention’s recommended best practice. However, like many small businesses, we are combating an unfamiliar foe in COVID-19 and have been faced with some hard decisions and certainly the financial and emotional stress of a difficult situation and an uncertain future. My partner and I work tirelessly every day to ensure that we deliver needed treatment for our patients and keep as many of our team members employed as possible. And despite all of this, we continue to think of our neighbors and those that have paid the ultimate price and how our trials and tribulations pale in comparison. (Continued on page 9)

Change (Continued from page 8)

Although our situation may be challenging at this time, we recognize that we are still fortunate in many ways and that frankly there are many facing graver challenges and circumstances that need our help. A commitment to our community has always been a core value at ProFysio. Every year we fundraise and coordinate food and toy drives in collaboration with nonprofit organizations to have a positive impact on our community. Just this week, ProFysio made monetary donations to local nonprofit organizations that serve our most vulnerable neighbors, because no one should go hungry. What’s next? At ProFysio, we are busy planning for a bright future for the patients we serve and our team members. We are embracing this time to plan and implement permanent changes that will ensure the safety of our patients and the longevity and viability of our company. For example, we are actively working on enhancements to our telehealth systems so that when our patients can’t come to the office for any reason they can have access to their Doctor of Physical Therapy and receive treatment via smartphone, tablet or computer. We’ve never been a practice that overbooks patients so while other companies may struggle to avoid overcrowding in treatment areas this will not be a problem for us. Nevertheless, we are working on new access features and scheduling

models that will provide even more space between patients and appointments. As a company we have always had very short wait times because we understand how important and valuable your time is. But now, in order to reduce the amount of people in reception areas and increase convenience, we’ll be implementing new technology, convenience and self service features to nearly eliminate any and all wait times and the potential for the transfer of germs and bacteria. Some believe that this is only the first wave of COVID-19 or that it may only be the tip of the iceberg. Unfortunately I don’t have a crystal ball. But what I do know is that if we continue to consider, care, advocate and act in the best interest of our fellow human being and that if we choose to learn and change from this experience we will emerge stronger and wiser than before. That’s the approach we are taking at ProFysio.

South Edison Community Association Mobilizes Civic Groups, Schools, Churches & Unions to Offer ‘Hands of Hope’ to Local Food Pantry The South Edison Community Association (SECA) is spearheading a food drive to benefit the “Hands of Hope” food pantry, and it is receiving widespread support from two dozen civic groups, schools, churches and labor unions. Individual residents and families can also contribute non-perishable foods to help re-stock our local food pantry’s shelves.

graduating class of 2020 can enjoy a moment they have all worked so hard to have.” As of April 30, the petition had 1,658 signatures with a goal to reach 2,500 signatures.

Noon–4 pm, Saturday, May 9 at Edison High School, on Boulevard of the Eagles, off Old Post Road. SECA volunteers will be on hand to help.

COMMUNITY BULLETIN BOARD

The food pantry, based at St. James Episcopal Church on Woodbridge Avenue, needs canned vegetables, fruits and soups; canned tuna and hams; boxes of pasta, rice and macaroni & cheese; boxes of potato flakes and baking mix; cereals and oatmeal; bottled tomato sauce and other gravy flavors. The coronavirus pandemic is creating a greater need for food from Hands of Hope. With more people jobless or temporarily furloughed, more local families are now struggling.

LETTERS First responders deserve line of duty death benefits due to coronavirus crisis

A

s a matter of practice, policy and procedure, the vast majority of law enforcement agencies provide for certain employment benefits for all sworn personnel, to include among them a special death benefit status known as a Line of Duty Death. This status occurs when the injuries which caused the officers demise were incurred from actions they took while providing law enforcement services to the community they serve. Being designated as a line of duty death also typically provides the surviving family with greater healthcare and death benefits.

The Criterion

Sentinel

Under the normal connotation of this status, these officers have died due to being shot, stabbed, run over by vehicles, or suffering death-related injuries in struggles with suspects. Yet there is now another cause for deaths of law enforcement first responders that should, and must, be considered as a line-of-duty related death: that cause is the death of a law enforcement first responder due to contracting the novel coronavirus. To date, law enforcement and correctional officer first responders in Illinois, Michigan, New York, New Jersey, Florida Editorial: 732-358-5200 Fax: 732-385-8868 Email: news@emsentinel.com Sports Email: sports@emsentinel.com Advertising: 732-358-5200 Fax: 732-385-8868 Email: sales@emsentinel.com

and California have died after contracting this deadly disease. And officers in at least eight states are known to have tested positive for the virus. It must be accepted and understood that they more than likely contracted this disease while conducting their duty-related services of responding to calls for service in their communities, or serving in prison environments, bringing them into close physical contact with persons who were either carriers of the virus or who had otherwise been exposed to the virus. In other words, they were most likely infected with the virus that took their lives while performing their duties as first responders. Law enforcement and correctional officers do not have the privilege of being able to “stay at home” or telecommute for their job. Ours is, unfortunately, a true “feelytouchy, in your face” type of occupation. We must actually be in direct contact and confrontation with people in order to do

our job. Yes, it is one that we have gladly espoused for one reason or another, always recognizing that it is a dangerous occupation. We urge all law enforcement and corrections agencies, whether they be municipal, county, state, or federal, to recognize the men and women who serve and are now dying from this disease as the true heroes that they are, and bestow upon them full line of duty death benefits. We as well demand that they make every effort to insure that these officers have access to the resources and equipment necessary to protect them from incurring this death-dealing disease.

Edison Arts Society awards three students with scholarships By KATHY CHANG Staff Writer

EDISON – Three students have been awarded scholarships from the Edison Arts Society. Preston Romanienko, a Middlesex County College student, has received the Edison Arts Society [EAS] Angelo Orlando scholarship. Preston is a visual art artist and plans to use his scholarship to purchase art supplies to further his studies in the arts. Mahi Vakil, a J.P. Stevens High School student, has received the EAS Preson Romanienko Certified Kitchens Scholarship. Mahi is a pianist and she plans to use the scholarship for more piano lessons. Louis Forgione, an Edison High School student, has received the EAS D.J. Dittman Scholarship. Louis, who received an EAS scholarship last Louis Forgione year, is a singer and

plans to use his scholarship for more singing lessons. “EAS is so grateful for all the talent we have in our community,” EAS President Gloria S. Dittman said, noting the society has awarded scholarships to township students for six years. “For example, this year we awarded a scholarship to a pianist, a singer and a visual artist. Each an aspect of the arts. EAS’ goal is to engender a love for all the arts and by awarding the scholarships this year, we feel we have Mahi Vakil accomplished our goal.” To qualify for the scholarships, a student must have a 3.5 GPA, attend one of Edison’s public schools including higher education institutions and must provide examples of their work. Students are also recommended by their respective teacher and the EAS Board selects each recipient. EAS membership is open to everyone. Membership is $35 per year.
