our candidates will be on the ballot running for two, threeyear terms on the Metuchen Borough Council in November. For the June 8 Primary Election, the races are uncontested. Jason Delia, a member of the Borough Council, and Joel Branch, a member of the

borough Planning Board, are on the Democrat line. Delia is seeking re-election to a second council term, while Branch is running to fill the seat currently held by Democratic Councilwoman Sheri-Rose Rubin, who is not running for re-election. Candidates Stephen Kitsko and Eric Lignell appear on the ballot for the Republicans. Democrats currently hold all six seats

on the Metuchen Borough Council and the mayor’s office. Voting in the Primary Election will take place June 8 at Metuchen High School, 400 Grove Ave., from 6 a.m. to 8 p.m. Delia has lived in Metuchen for close to a decade and was elected to the Borough Council in 2019. he Woodbridge Township clerk’s office has certified nine people as candidates for the Primary Election to be held on June 8, ahead of the General Election in November. Up for election are Woodbridge Township Council ward seats. The remaining four at-large seats will be selected in two years. Five council members are seeking reelection – Nancy Bader-Drumm (D–1); Harold “Howie” R. Bauer Jr. (D–2); Corey S. Spillar (D-3); Virbhadra “Viru” Patel (D4); and Debbie Meehan (D-5). The challengers in the November election will be Ken Gardner (D-1) and John Vrtaric (Rep-1); Paul Lund Jr. (R-2); John Masculin (R-3); and Rocco Genova (R-5). The one primary contest will be between Gardner and Vrtaric in Ward 1. Meanwhile, Virbhadra “Viru” Patel (Dem) is running unopposed in Ward 4.

Ward 1 Nancy Bader-Drumm is the membership director of the Woodbridge Community Center. Ken Gardner is a one-time council president and current volunteer firefighter seeking to unseat Bader-Drumm and get back on the council. Gardner has maintained a voice at council meetings, often challenging the council members and Mayor John (Continued on page 6)

Metuchen Downtown Alliance helps businesses survive the pandemic

D

espite the immense challenges of 2020, the Metuchen Downtown Alliance (MDA) secured more than $655,000 in funding from the New Jersey Department of Community Affairs to provide grants to businesses impacted by the COVID-19 pandemic. Additionally, the MDA’s $50,000 Reopening Grants program provided grants of $1,250 to 40 businesses to reopen in safe, timely and effective ways. These are just a few of the highlights presented in the MDA’s 2020 Annual Report, which puts the intense work over the last year responding to the COVID-19 pandemic in the context of the last four years of its successful downtown revitalization efforts. “Our continued focus on business development is what allowed for a quick pivot in response to COVID-19, making Metuchen a model example for downtown resilience during a crisis,” said Isaac Kremer, MDA executive director. The MDA recognized the need to focus efforts on helping small businesses while carefully managing the resources and funding needed to meet the unprecedented challenge. “We worked closely with state and borough governments to obtain vital funding and use public spaces to help Metuchen’s small businesses survive this pandemic,” Kremer said. For example, MDA leadership, key partners such as the borough government, and volunteers, quickly mobilized to establish a curbside pickup program in the first week of the pandemic; “Metuchen Delivers” helped to highlight more than 40

businesses providing curbside pickup, delivery, and gift cards; and the “Feeding the Front Line” initiative raised more than $25,000 from 225 private donors to provide nearly 1,685 meals for first responders from local restaurants. Additionally, the MDA collaborated with borough officials and the Metuchen Area Chamber of Commerce to relax regulations of streets and sidewalks to better support restaurants and bolster downtown traffic to all merchants with significantly expanded outdoor dining. Borough leaders and the Metuchen Police Department also closed a block of New Street for 14 consecutive weekends to expand outdoor dining. Funded by an AARP Community Challenge grant, this evolved into the New Streetery, a more permanent space for heated, winter-rated, al fresco dining structures. Several igloos and a total of 65 infrared heaters were purchased to support outdoor dining throughout cold weather months. “However, without the amazing track record accumulated over the last four years, the MDA would not have had the ability to secure such vital funding,” said Eric Berger, MDA chairman, in reference to the five-year Strategic Plan adopted by the MDA in August 2017. With a concrete plan to transform the Metuchen downtown into a more familyfriendly and innovative place, the MDA had been creating incremental yet sustainable change via downtown retail promotions and storefront improvements for Metuchen’s variety of shops, restaurants, and service businesses. Together, strategic partnerships and increased community

engagement also worked to build a robust support network, resulting in significant improvements to streets, sidewalks, and public spaces. “What we put in place years ago set us up for the positive outcomes we’re seeing today,” Kremer said. The strategy has helped to attract more than 126 businesses to Metuchen’s historic downtown since its implementation, with MDA volunteers and partners working overtime last year to assist in securing more than $13 million from county, state, and federal grant and loan programs to help support them through the pandemic. Top volunteers and business owners who contributed to the success of the downtown district in 2020 include: • Angela Pineiro, owner of Blue Parachute, a full-service design and print shop on Amboy Avenue, earned the Business Champion”award for deploying curbside pickup signs, supervising the design and installation of signage for Papillion & Co. and A&J Jewelers, and sourcing wind-load rated tents for New Streetery; • Fred Schmitt and Reidun Anderson of Schmitt Anderson Architects on Hillside Avenue earned the District Owner award for not only keeping their own buildings leased and in top condition, but also assisting local businesses with building improvements; • Edna Epelu, owner of Papillon & Co., a housewares and accessories shop on Main Street that opened in September 2020, earned the Promotion Award for welcoming pop-up vendors, partnering with Hailey’s Harp & Pub for online Mixology on Main cocktail- creating classes,

and hosting local artists to display their work, including The Hub & Spoke Vintage Bikes and Repairs; • Rob DeFilippis of Runner’s High, a specialty running store on Main Street, earned the Innovation award for accelerating plans to establish an online store and continuously improving the space as a past recipient of the Storefront Improvement Grant; • Ryan Park of Menya Ramen House earned the Storefront Improvement award after fitting out a new space at 399 Main Street as part of the MDA’s Storefront Grant program. Since opening in October 2020, Menya Ramen House has become a foodie destination, complete with a newly renovated indoor dining area with an open kitchen; • Melissa Perilstein, Metuchen Borough Administrator, earned the Public Official award for helping the borough facilitate curbside pickup zones, allow for increased outdoor dining and retail, and establish the New Streetery, after having just been named borough administrator in February 2020; • Mark Harris, an accomplished photographer who joined the board in 2019, earned the Board Service award for becoming a critical liaison to the Metuchen Arts Council and his commitment to public art and performances, including live music on New Street, jazz performances at The Greek, a Bollywood music event, and a retail pop-up with local artists at Boyt Drugs; • And Linda Levine earned the Volunteer of the Year award for becoming a (Continued on page 14)

committees. He said priorities continue to be traffic calming and pedestrian safety improvements and moving forward with the recently introduced Greenprint project for Metuchen’s sports fields, parks and green spaces. “Some of the projects I’m really most proud of are around making the town more pedestrian friendly,” Delia said. “Working with the county we were able to reduce the speed limits on almost all of our roadways to 25 mph.” Delia said traffic calming has been a priority. “When I talk to people about Metuchen, they see us as a cyclist- and pedestrianfriendly town and we are, we really are. But when you live here you see how we could do some things better. So speed limits were a huge thing.” Another priority cited by Delia, who works in the tech field, has been supporting the business community during the pandemic. “I was involved in coming up with our plan to support our businesses and get them to reopen in a safe way,” he said. Measures included allowing businesses to move out onto the sidewalks, and allocating public spaces like parking lots. “The big one would be what we’ve done on New Street, right in the center of town,” Delia said. “In the summer we closed the street on the weekends to allow for businesses to expand outside. In the fall we made New Street one way and opened up the other side to allow businesses to utilize that side. “Anecdotally, in my mind, Metuchen’s downtown has fared better than other towns in the area because of what we’ve done,” he said. Branch moved to the borough with his family close to two years ago. He has a background in computer science and said he is currently working in the artificial intelligence software field. He said that he would bring prior experience in community service to the council position. “Even though it’s my first run for elected office, I have been involved in community service,” said Branch. “So, when we moved here, I joined the planning board … and I am seeing how citizens can really get involved to affect the look of the town and the way it functions. “I also have executive experience in learning to work with people from different walks of life, people with different perspectives. There are some things I would like to focus on; quality of life and pedestrian safety is something I share with Jason (Delia),” Branch said. “I love getting outside. Metuchen has great green spaces.

NEWSPAPER MEDIA GROUP • www.centraljersey.com

“The other thing – from a platform point of view – is what I call ‘intentional citizen engagement.’ There’s a lot of great things that happen in Metuchen but I hear about some of them too late. … I feel we can do more to pull citizens in to enjoy things and look for people to have a voice. So, those are things I’m really passionate about. “More and more people move here, there are younger professionals moving into town,” Branch said, adding it is important that the council engage with “the people who have always been here, as well as those folks who are moving in … making sure that we modernize in a way that we engage folks who’ve always lived here and new people as well. “I love that the council is diverse as far as male and female,” he said, “and I look forward to bringing my perspective, insights and experiences as an African American to the council as well, so that’s something I’m very excited about.” Kitsko has lived in the borough for 27 years and is making his third run at a borough council seat, having made prior runs in 2005 and 2020. A self-described “finance guy,” Kitsko said he is running for a seat on the all-Democrat governing body to bring a different perspective to council. He is endorsed by the Metuchen Republican Municipal Committee. “I am running for Metuchen Borough Council to bring an alternative voice and bipartisan representation to our local government,” he said. “In my mind bipartisan means a diversity of opinions. I mean that in the sense that when you have different ideas, there’s more than one way to get things done.” Kitsko’s children attended borough schools and he said he has been involved in community service in Metuchen, including sports and music programs. His platform calls for governing based on fiscally conservative principles, sound planning for the future of the borough, working toward an affordable community and consistently addressing the basic needs of a community with aged infrastructure. He stressed the necessity of having a realistic capital plan and the importance of planning for the long term to ensure adequate funding for vital public services. “For the borough government, what are your priorities? You have a limited budget and you have to plan,” he said, noting that underfunding impacts services. “People, more than anything, want public services, want public safety – fire, police, sanitation - they want their garbage picked up, their streets paved and plowed in the wintertime, that kind of basics. “Beyond that can you afford to do something else?” he asked, stressing new initiatives the borough commits to must be based on solid planning for financial sustainability going forward. “For example, the Greenprint is a great

idea; however, can we afford it? The initial part of it is with a grant, that’s fine, but there are ongoing maintenance costs.” He cited the same concerns regarding the borough’s acquisition of The Forum Theater. “Our Public Works Department is being stretched to the limit,” he continued, “being forced to do with less. To their credit, they’re doing it but they’re being stretched to the breaking point and it’s going to break if we don’t do something different. “But that’s part of planning. It’s one thing, yes, let’s go get these grants. I’m all for that. But let’s plan how, if you get something, you still have to pay ongoing operating costs. They don’t talk about that.” According to Kitsko, borough government must address and plan for the basic and essential needs of a town with aging infrastructure. “It’s all tied together. You plan your family budget. I was planning my retirement 30 years ago. I needed to save so we could have enough money to do that. I was planning ahead,” he said. “All families have to do that, the borough is just a bigger family.” Lignell is currently running as a placeholder candidate, meaning he is on the ballot for the primary but could be replaced before the general election in November. Richard Menziuso, GOP chairman, commented about the election. “The majority of registered voters are not Republicans. Steve earned approximately 800 more votes (votes of confidence) this last general election than did the top of the Republican ticket so while the state and local Republicans have been largely impacted by the national leadership, we continue to have confidence our Metuchen residents are open-minded, listen and will continue to be focused on local issues. “It’s not impossible to win seats on the council as an opposing party. It’s the degree of difficulty. The turning point in Metuchen for either an alternative party or simply bipartisan elected officials is really up to Metuchen residents. Metuchen has been very fortunate as the beneficiary of new residents (and small business owners) into our local community and I suspect the identity (the fabric) of Metuchen will continue to evolve as it should. “We want an energetic and dynamic environment where the community is the envy of other communities in our state and beyond,” he said. According to the Middlesex County Office of Public Information, residents will have multiple options for casting their votes in the 2021 Primary Election, including: voting in-person, mailing ballots through the USPS, or dropping a ballot in a secure drop box. Metuchen to observe Memorial Day with ‘rolling parade,’ student patriotic art contest By GLORIA STRAVELLI Correspondent

METUCHEN — Although the observance is still curtailed by the pandemic, the Borough of Metuchen will again mark the day that honors the men and women who gave their lives while serving in the U.S. military – as it has for more than 90 years. A “rolling” Memorial Day Parade led by the Metuchen Fire Department will begin at 9:30 a.m. on Monday, May 31, according to Ellen Regan, who is in charge of 2021 Memorial Day events for the Metuchen Parade Commission. “We are not hosting a parade this year, unfortunately because of COVID, so we’re going to be doing some things virtually. “The fire department will ride through

town along with the police, DPW and some emergency vehicles,” she said. “It’s similar to what they do for the holidays, where they ride through town, their lights on waving flags. “To coincide with that we have the lawn signs. Hopefully people will go outside, stand on their lawns and as long as they are socially distanced, just wave their flags,” Regan said. The commission’s red-white-and-blue patriotic lawn signs have been sprouting up throughout the borough as Memorial Day approaches. “We created a lawn sign and they are being sold for $10 at the Farmers Market, which opens [May 22] from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m.,” Regan said. “The donation will cover the cost of the signs and any excess funds will be put toward future parades.”

The idea is for the red-white-and-blue signs to create a patriotic display in conjunction with the rolling parade. Members of the Metuchen Parade Commission, in addition to Regan, are Patricia Lucas-Schnarre, who served as chair in 2020, Jamie Schleck, Lynne Mueller and Brendan Flynn. The commission also sponsored a virtual student art contest at all the grade schools, Regan said. A virtual gallery of the patriotic posters can be viewed on the Metuchen Arts Council site at www.metuchenartscouncil.com “It’s posted and has been a true team effort because the arts council offered their site so that the posters could be submitted digitally,” Regan said, adding that some posters are displayed in shop windows. “And I am working this week to get the

They’ll be announced next week.” As it was last year, the annual parade is being pared down so as not to encourage crowds to gather along the route, Regan explained, and plans are still being finalized, including what other borough departments and emergency services will take part. “We are making the most of what we can do,” she said. The parade will again visit a limited number of local roadways and residents are encouraged to be outside to view the parade – while socially distancing. The parade route had not yet been finalized as of May 20 and will be posted on the Metuchen Fire Department’s Facebook page prior to the event, she added. “The route will be on Facebook next week, so people will know what streets they’re going down,” Regan said. As in the past, at 11:30 a.m. on May 30, American Legion Fugel Hummer Post 65 will hold a Memorial Day observance with a wreath laying at Memorial Park where the parade will conclude. The ceremony will also be livestreamed on the borough’s Facebook page.

Seatbelt enforcement campaign includes checkpoints and saturation patrols Law enforcement officers around the country will crack down on unbuckled motorists and passengers as part of the national Click it or Ticket campaign. From May 24 through June 6, the annual Click It or Ticket national mobilization utilizes high visibility seat belt checkpoints and saturation patrols, in combination with local and national publicity efforts, to reiterate the lifesaving value of seat belts. “Using a seat belt is the simplest way for motor vehicle occupants to protect themselves on the road,” Eric Heitmann, director of the New Jersey Division of Highway Traffic Safety, said in a prepared statement. “Crash statistics show that in 2017 alone, seat belt use saved nearly 15,000 lives nationally.” In New Jersey, a key focus of this year’s Click It or Ticket campaign is to promote seat belt usage by adults in all seating positions in the vehicle, both front and rear seats. The front seat belt usage rate in New Jersey currently stands at 90.23%. However, adults riding in rear seats are buckling up at a significantly lower rate, only 48% according to the most recent surveys, according to the statement. “For whatever reason there seems to be a disconnect with people feeling they don’t need to buckle up when riding as passengers in rear seats, and this is a concern,” Heitmann said in the statement. “By promoting back seat usage of seat belts during our Click It or Ticket campaign, we’re encouraging passenger habits that will save lives.”

The Metuchen Area Chamber of Commerce announced Cruise Night Season for 2021. The scheduled dates are June 2, July 7, Aug. 4, Sept. 1 and Oct. 6 from 6-8:30 p.m. Rain dates will be the following Wednesday. There will be prizes for first, second and third place at each event. The 2020 Click It or Ticket mobilization was cancelled due to the COVID public health emergency. During the 2019 Click it or Ticket campaign, 343 New Jersey police agencies participated in the two-week initiative. As a result of the effort, law enforcement officers issued 14,548 seat belt citations, 5,670 speeding summonses and made 858 impaired driving arrests, according to the statement.

Polos becomes next chairman of Middlesex County Crime Stoppers

T

he Board of Directors of Middlesex County Crime Stoppers elected H. James Polos as their new chairman at the May meeting of the organization. Polos will succeed Anthony Caputo, police director from New Brunswick, who is the founding member and founding chairman of the organization since its inception 10 years ago. “On behalf of the Board of County Commissioners, I offer our sincerest congratulations to Jim Polos on being elected as Middlesex County Crime Stoppers’ new chairman and thank him for his continued service to the residents of Middlesex County,” Board of County Commissioner Director Ronald G. Rios said in the prepared statement. “Polos’ commitment to the greater community and incredible array of skills will add to an already strong board and keep Crime Stoppers a viable and effective agency.” Polos’ involvement with the community and law enforcement includes being a member of the New Jersey Police Training Commission, a member of the NJ State Chiefs of Police Association Departmental Accreditation Team, a volunteer emergency management director for Highland Park, a member of NJ Department of Homeland Security Interfaith Advisory Council, and currently the executive director of the Middlesex County Improvement Authority. “It is truly an honor to now serve as chairman, and I look forward to building on the successes of this essential organization while charting new opportunities to serve our county for the next 10 years. The work of Crime Stoppers in coordination with law enforcement and community-based organizations is invaluable to help solve criminal

cases which makes our communities safer places to live and work,” Polos, who is a former county freeholder, the predecessor to commissioner, said in the statement. “I am fortunate to step into a leadership position that has been so aptly developed by Director Caputo in his 10 years of service and gratified that he has agreed to continue to serve the organization as chairman emeritus. We owe much thanks to the founding members and all members of the board for their hard work and dedication.” Under Caputo’s leadership, Crime Stoppers has had over 1,000 tips that have led to more than 40 arrests for various types of crimes, according to the statement. In 2016, funding was provided to the K-9 Search and Rescue program that utilizes highly trained bloodhounds to find missing children and adults, and has been credited with multiple saves by finding individuals who were missing and suicidal, according to the statement. Additionally, Caputo was instrumental in organizing fundraising events for the non-profit to provide cash incentives for anonymous tips which helped solve crimes, according to the statement. “Crime Stoppers has been an outstanding program, assisting law enforcement and the people we serve across Middlesex County. It is an honor to be a founding member of this great organization and a privilege to have served as chairman for the last ten years. I wish our new Chairman Jim Polos all the best and look forward to continued success and achievements for the Crime Stoppers organization,” Caputo said in the statement. Crime Stoppers has developed a close working relationship with the Middlesex

County Prosecutor’s Office to determine where tips and rewards can be helpful to solve open cases, according to the statement. “Crime Stoppers helps Middlesex County as a whole and contributes to our ability to provide a safe and secure

community to raise a family. The MCIA congratulates Jim Polos on his new role. Polos’ background and expertise will enhance the organization’s work across our county,” Chairman of the Middlesex County Improvement Authority James Nolan said in the statement.

Eight arrests made by Internet Crimes Against Children Unit after 100,000 images discovered Middlesex County Prosecutor Yolanda Ciccone announced that six county residents have been arrested for their possession of material depicting the sexual exploitation or abuse of children. On May 13, officers of the East Brunswick, Edison, Highland Park, Monroe, New Brunswick, North Brunswick, Perth Amboy and Sayreville police departments, along with detectives of the New Jersey State Police and the Middlesex County Prosecutor’s Office, executed search warrants at six residences across the county, according to information provided on May 14. The investigation resulted in the following arrests: • Dingren Nie, 27, of Edison, was charged for second-degree using a filesharing program to store items depicting the sexual exploitation or abuse of chil-

dren, second-degree possession with the intent to distribute child pornography, and first-degree possession of child pornography after having been found to be in possession of 100,000 items of material depicting the sexual exploitation or abuse of children. • Hongpeng Zheng, 24, of New Brunswick, was charged for second-degree distribution of child pornography, thirddegree possession of child pornography, and second-degree using a file-sharing program to store items depicting the sexual exploitation or abuse of children. • Ali Armas-Iriarte, 58, of Highland Park, was charged for third-degree possession of child pornography, second-degree possession with the intent to distribute child pornography, and second-degree using a file-sharing program to store items depicting the sexual exploitation or abuse

of children. • Jeff Caramella, 21, of the Parlin section of Sayreville, was charged for thirddegree possession of child pornography. • James Walden, 50, of North Brunswick, was charged for third-degree possession of child pornography. • A juvenile, 17, of Monroe, was charged for third-degree possession of child pornography. Additionally, on May 6, Kenneth Godfrey, 41, of Woodbridge, was charged with third-degree possession of child pornography. On May 10, a juvenile, 14, of Edison, was also charged for second-degree possession of child pornography. All of the aforementioned individuals were charged following separate investigations by Detective Daniel Lojek and Detective Stephanie Redline of the Inter-

net Crimes Against Children Unit of the Middlesex County Prosecutor’s Office, which revealed the individuals possessed material depicting the sexual exploitation or abuse of children, according to the statement. Presently, the investigations appear to be unconnected and the individuals are unknown to one another, according to the statement. Nie was lodged at the Middlesex Adult Correction Center pending a pre-trial detention hearing in Superior Court as of press time. The remaining defendants individuals were likewise lodged at the Middlesex Adult Correction Center pending their initial appearances in Superior Court. Anyone with information should call Lojek at 732-745-5924 or Redline at 732867-1496.

Two When Calls the Heart alums, Pascale Hutton and Kavan Smith, star in Hallmark Channel’s new original movie You Had Me at Aloha, which premieres Saturday, June 5, at 9 p.m. ET/PT. Filmed entirely on location in Oahu, the movie is part of the network’s annual “Summer Nights” programming event. When the host of a popular travel show resigns, the network enlists Paige (Hutton), to step in for the next season set in Hawaii. Unbeknownst to her, they have also hired Ben (Smith), who likes to push everything to the extreme. As these two new co-hosts clash over their opposing ideas for production, they grapple with the fact that not only do they need each other to further their careers, but they also balance each other on and off the screen. PBS will premiere NOVA: Ship That Changed the World on Wednesday, June 2, at 9 p.m. ET (check your local listings.) Five centuries ago, the Age of Exploration and Europe’s imperial colonization of far-off lands was launched by a revolution in ship design that made long-distance ocean voyages practical. But exactly how this momentous innovation happened eludes historians.

Now, the excavation of a rare intact wreck discovered off the coast of Sweden offers vital new clues to a maritime mystery. Scott McGillivray returns to HGTV for season two of Vacation House Rules, premiering Saturday, June 5, at 8 p.m. ET/PT. Relying on his years of smart real estate and renovation experience, Scott will teach families how to take their vacation property and unlock its full rental potential. With his guidance, even the most neglected and unlivable properties will be transformed into unique, gorgeous and profitable vacation homes for visitors to enjoy. In the new season, a gloomy cottage is transformed into a family-friendly retreat, a lakeside cabin is elevated to a five-star winter sanctuary, and an abandoned art studio gets upgraded to a chic vacation rental. TBS will premiere the American version of the The Cube on Thursday, June 10, at 9 p.m. ET/PT. Based on the UK mega-hit and hosted by NBA All-Star Dwyane Wade, this high-octane series spotlights contestant pairs who must demonstrate skill, nerve and determination as they endure seemingly simple physical and mental tasks, all while confined in an intimidating glass box. Working on their own or as a team, each pair has nine lives to complete seven games in hopes of winning the $250,000 jackpot. New challenges are introduced each episode.

The Life and Times of Antonia Evangelista Cappella Mrs. Antonetta Cappella entered God’s kingdom on April 26th, passing away peacefully at Robert Wood Johnson hospital in New Brunswick, New Jersey at the age of 99. Born Antonia Evangelista on September 15th, 1921 in the town of Pignataro Interamna, part of the Frosinone Province in the Lazio region of Italy, she was one of 6 children raised on a bustling farm surrounded by a wide variety of plant and animal life. Many a chicken came to fear her wringing hands according to legend, and the experience never faded from her memory. Seeking liberty, opportunity, and a better life her family emigrated to the United States in 1938 when she was 16 years old arriving in New York Harbor, passing through Ellis Island and settling in Long Island City in the Queens borough of New York. Leaving the country for the city, she was a young, beautiful, fresh face in a new land with a new deal. Undoubtedly charmed, she had boyfriends as a teenager, but ultimately fell in love with and married her soulmate, a friend and neighbor from the old country, Alberto Cappella on March 5th, 1944 at St. Mary’s Roman Catholic Church in Long Island City at the tender age of 22. In January of 1945 she gave birth to her first child, a son, named Louis. Talented with a needle and thread she worked as a seamstress in Manhattan’s garment district, and later in Rahway and Perth Amboy, New Jersey in an effort to support her husband, something she remained proud of throughout her life. Together, young parents, and a working couple, the family settled permanently in Edison, New Jersey in 1952 following a job transfer, where they built a red brick house that was made to last. In September of 1953 she became a mother for the second time giving birth to a daughter, MaryAnn. Antonetta and her husband were inseparable, and she remained forever close with her immediate and extended family maintaining extremely tight bonds. Quintessential, enchanted, and like something out of a movie they traveled in the same circles, visited often, vacationed, and did everything together in a lapse of time spanning decades. She cradled future generations in her arms as her family grew, she lived to see her relatives gather, and she loved hosting and entertaining company in her home for dinner and drinks on fine china complete with coffee and cake. She took meticulous care of her home inside and out forever cleaning, planting flowers, tilling the soil of her garden patch, growing fruits and vegetables, and sharing in her harvest. Cooking was an absolute devotion, and it was in the kitchen where she was truly in her glory and at her best preparing gourmet meals from scratch and taking great pleasure in nourishing and feeding her family. She produced many a delicious meal and precious moment to savor, and her main ingredient really was love. A warm, kind and delicate woman Antonetta instilled strong family values, customs and a sense of tradition in her children the legacy of which has passed on to her 6 grandchildren, Christine, Robbie, Louie, Tommy, Amanda and Johnny. A loyal, faithful and loving wife, in 1994 surrounded by her family and friends, she and her husband celebrated 50 years of marriage. In declining health, she was a life guard and bedside nurse to her husband, tending to his needs daily until his passing in December of 1996 fulfilling her vows. Antonetta was miraculously blessed with good health and longevity. A benefactor of good habits, a strong will, and a vivacious spirit, she was never without purpose and meaningful work in her life. Insulated and protected by the home they built and with the support of family she survived her husband by more than 20 years. She would live to see herself become a Great Grandmother 8 times over to Robert, Evan, Jessica, Mya, Mikayla, Giovanni, Alessandro and Vincent. In her later years she continued to enjoy cooking for and spending time with her family, gardening, sewing, knitting, and the respite of summers at her shore house on the lake in Manahawkin, New Jersey. Not without trial and tribulation her life was full of joy and happiness, she loved and was loved by many, and was the sole surviving member of her generation. To know her was to be cared for, concerned for, and thought of often. She gave of herself, for us. The last 10 years of her life were spent saving another life…mine. Rest in Peace Grandma, and Thank You. Always, Thomas J. Katchisin Jr. No. 1 Grandson

PRAYER IS POWERFUL Oh, most beautiful flower of Mount Carmel, fruitful vine of splendor of Heaven, Blessed Mother of the son of God, Immaculate Virgin, assist me in my necessity. Oh, Star of the Sea, help me and show me herein you are my Mother. Oh, Holy Mary Mother of God, Queen of Heaven and Earth! I humbly beseech you from the bottom of my heart to succor me in this petition. There are none that can withstand your power. Oh, show me herein you are my Mother. Oh Mary conceived without sin pray for us who have recourse in thee (3Xs). Holy Mother, I place this cause in your hands (3Xs). Holy Spirit, you who solve all problems, light all roads so I can attain my goal. You who gave me the divine gift to forgive and forget all evil against me and that in all instances in my life you are with me, I want in this short prayer to thank you for all things as you confirm once again that I never want to be separated from you in eternal glory. Thank you for your mercy towards me and mine. + Say this prayer 3 consecutive days and publish prayer after petition is granted. Do not despair. Additional advice and petition. Pray the Rosary regularly. F.A.M.
