Lin, 22, who is on the autism spectrum, became drawn to the art of ballooning after watching a YouTube video when he was 10 years old. “He started making a lot of cartoon characters. … His favorite is [Marvel Comics’] the Hulk,” his mother Jenny said. Jenny Lin said for her son to have a regular peer and true friend in Mastrocola is special. Mastrocola, who is studying physical therapy at a college in Missouri, helps gather ideas for Eddie Lin’s balloon side gig. SECA raises $25,000 in donations for Hands of Hope Food Pantry
T
he South Edison Community Association (SECA) collected 23 truckloads of non-perishable food for the Hands of Hope food pantry, and raised $25,000 in direct donations to help feed the growing number of local needy people and families. “Our weekend food drive was a tremendous success to restock Hands of Hope,” organizer Anthony Russomanno said in a prepared statement. “It shows the amazing strength of community unity. We can meet any challenge and accomplish any goal by working together.” SECA members got support for the food drive on May 16 from two dozen civic groups, schools, churches and unions. “We brought together Christians, Jews and Muslims; Asian and Asian-Indian neighbors; corporate executives and small business owners; Republicans and Democrats; police and firefighters; and teachers and environmentalists,” Russomanno said PHOTOS COURTESY OF SOUTH EDISON COMMUNITY ASSOCIATION in the statement. “That’s really terrific.” Middlesex County Freeholder Charles Michael Lombardi helps an Edison resident Tomaro, a long-time Hands of Hope volun- unload non-perishable food donations from teer and board member, said the “generous a pickup truck outpouring of community support filled pantry shelves and our storage units.” perishable food to MCFOODS (Middlesex SECA also delivered six pallets of non- County Food Organization and Outreach

Some of the most notable contributions to Hands of Hope were: Congregation Ohr Torah families donated seven truckloads of non-perishable foods; Cedric Varasteh, CEO of USTC Corp. in Raritan Center, personally gave $15,000 to the food bank and another $15,000 to MCFOODS; Lions Sales, in Edison, donated 500 jars of pasta sauce to Hands of Hope plus 1,000 more jars to McFoods; businessman Thomas J. Swales IV donated $5,000; and the Knights of Columbus at St. Matthew’s Catholic Church contributed $2,000. Hands of Hope has also received financial pledges from Edison PBA Local 75, Edison Firefighters Local 1197, Edison FOP Lodge 101 and other local civic organizations. Peter Visceglia, president of Federal Business Centers, also donated $2,500 to help SECA continue its charitable work, according to the statement. Hands of Hope provides bags of nourishing food to more than 4,000 needy Edi-
son-area households, including senior citizens, veterans and people with disabilities. It annually provides hot lunches to 4,500 people; distributes 300-350 turkeys and food bags at Thanksgiving and Christmas; plus serves over 500 meals at Easter. Partnering with SECA for the food dive were AFSME Local 12, BAPS Temple, Boy Scout Troop 12, Congregation Ohr Torah, Edison Democratic Organization, Edison Firefighters IAFF Local 1197, Edison FOP Lodge 101; Edison Italian American Club; Edison PBA Local 75 and Superior Officers Association; Edison Police Auxiliary, Edison Public Schools, the Edison Republican Organization, Edison Township Education Association (ETEA), Indian Business Association (IBA), local Knights Of Columbus Councils, Masjid Al Wali Mosque, OPEIU Local 32, RePurpose NJ, the South Asian Community Organization, Teamsters Local 469, Edison Wetlands Association and UAW Local 2620. Balloons (Continued from page 1)
gestures from a pure-hearted kind of guy,” Jenny Lin said of her son’s gifts. Ballooning became Eddie Lin’s passion and blossomed into the Ausome Balloon Creator project in 2014. It was the time when Eddie Lin’s family, which also includes dad Jim, older sister Cindy and younger brother James, took a trip to Taiwan to visit family. “We found some balloon professionals for Eddie to learn from,” Jenny Lin said. Eddie Lin took his newfound techniques and started making balloons for family and friends. Jenny Lin said the balloon journey has also become a learning experience where her son has been learning to adapt and build confidence. For example, Jenny Lin said a person on the spectrum might have one model of a turkey and makes the turkey as he sees it with the color brown. If the color brown runs out and different colors have to be used to make a turkey, the person on a spectrum might have a hard time adapting. Jenny Lin said her son is continuing to
learn and adapt through customer orders and has built confidence talking to customers. In 2018, a well-known balloon professional Steve Jones, owner of Balloon Designers with Alexa Rivera, in Seattle, offered Eddie Lin a scholarship to take master classes at the annual FLOAT balloon convention. Jones is the executive director of the convention. In 2019, Eddie Lin and his mom ventured to Missouri for the convention. “It was very eye opening,” Jenny Lin said of the balloon industry from how the entertainment business drops balloons in stadiums to decorating convention halls. From his experiences, Eddie Lin continues to build his balloon repertoire and continues to test the waters of various customer orders. Jenny Lin said she helps her son translate what customers want and through trial and error, he makes the final product. This time of year, Jenny Lin said, is usually Eddie Lin’s busy season, from milestone creations to attending birthday parties. With the pandemic, it has been a bit different with porch display creations. She noted her son only uses professional

the township’s residential and commercial property owners. Harvier said the tax levy makes up 92% of the budget. The school district’s 2019-20 budget totaled $39.76 million and was supported by the collection of a $37.23 million tax levy. The district received an enrollment adjustment, which is based on unhoused students, to go beyond the 2% tax cap. The adjustment of $276,830 allows for four additional special education teachers to keep up with the new mental health initiatives as students move up in grades.
The budget includes 1.5 teachers at Moss School, which addresses the needs of incoming students; two teachers at Edgar Middle School, which covers programs and expands math time; and one teacher at Metuchen High School. The district received $1.80 million in state aid, an increase of $263,750 from last year. Harvier noted the state aid numbers are about the same state aid they received in the 2008-09 school year. Metuchen ratables equal $1.08 billion, which increased by $20 million from last year. District administrators said for the owner of a home assessed at the township average of $206,645, school taxes will increase

by $32 from 2019-20, which saw a $19 school tax increase. In 2020-21, the school tax rate is projected to be $3.81 per $100 of assessed valuation. The owner of a home assessed at the township average will pay about $7,876 in school taxes, or 0.4% over last year. In 2019-20, the school tax rate was $3.73 per $100 of assessed valuation. The owner of a home assessed at the township average paid about $7,525. The amount of school taxes an individual pays is determined by the assessed value of his home and/or property and the tax rate that is set by the school district. The 2020-21 budget supports the district’s mental health initiative with a new

therapeutic program at Campbell Elementary and Edgar Middle schools through Rutgers University Behavioral Health Care (RUBHC), the therapeutic program at Metuchen High School through Effective School Solutions [ESS], two additional school psychologists, additional behavioral support interventions, academic intervention teachers in literacy and math, learning strategies support programs, and clerical support for special services. With public support for a $700,000 second budget question in November 2019, the district was able to broaden ESS services as well as bring in RUBHC for therapeutic services. The budget supports the continuation to develop a transition program for students with disabilities ages 18-21, increases in special education programs, professional development, speech therapy coaching, summer curriculum revisions, supplies and field trips, one-to-one technology initiative for rising fifth and ninth grade students, surface upgrades for some administrative users, and projector upgrades for Smart Boards. The budget also supports the continuation of proactive maintenance of all district buildings – Moss Elementary, Campbell Elementary, Edgar Middle and Metuchen High schools – and athletic fields, continuation of parking lot maintenance at all buildings, completion of science labs, and various safety enhancements.
