Local officials, police speak on events in Minneapolis, call for unity to end racism By KATHY CHANG Staff Writer

A peaceful protest was held in Metuchen on May 31 in front of the Reverend Martin Luther King Jr. Memorial Park on Middlesex Avenue following the death of George Floyd in Minneapolis. Two more peaceful protests are scheduled in Edison and Woodbridge.

ocal officials took to social media, whether in a statement or personal note, to express their thoughts following the events surrounding the death of George Floyd in Minneapolis on May 25. Floyd, an African American man, died after Minneapolis Police Department Officer Derek Chauvin, a white man, knelt on his neck for more than eight minutes after pinning him to the ground during an arrest on May 25. Chauvin was charged with second-degree murder on May 29. Three other officers, Tou Thao, Thomas Lane and J. Alexander Kueng, were charged with aiding and abetting Floyd’s murder on June 3. “Like many residents, I have become outraged by the death of George Floyd in Minneapolis,” Metuchen Mayor Jonathan Busch wrote in a social media post on May 29. “It is a mistake to assume that events like these do not impact us. Leaders across the United States must take this opportunity to reflect upon our communities and ensure that our law enforcement agencies are in the best position possible to respond fairly and with careful regard for human life.” Busch said following Floyd’s death he has discussed with Metuchen Police Chief David Irizarry about how the Metuchen Police Department continues to train each year in a variety of de-escalation techniques and diversity education. “Part of having one of the most professional and prepared police departments in the state requires that we continuously review our actions to ensure that every person is treated equitably, no matter the circumstance,” he said. “In Metuchen and everywhere, we have a shared responsibility to treat one another with respect and dignity.” A peaceful protest was held in Metuchen

on May 31 in front of the Reverend Martin Luther King (MLK) Jr. Memorial Park on Middlesex Avenue. “I’m proud to be the mayor of a community which understands that ‘injustice anywhere is a threat to justice everywhere,’ ” Busch said, quoting MLK, following the protest. Another peaceful protest was scheduled in Edison from Sam’s Club on Route 1 to Edison High School, 50 Boulevard of the Eagles, at 2 p.m. on June 8. Edison Police Chief Thomas Bryan released a statement on June 3 ahead of the protest. He said officers respect everyone’s right to protest and the need to gather for the purposes of discussion and reflection. “It is imperative [the protests] remain non-violent to ensure the discussion is neither muted nor diverted by the actions of others whose purpose is mayhem rather than constructive dialogue,” he said. “Now is the time for collective prayer, reflection and the continued effort to maintain confidence and trust without our community.” Bryan said the Edison Police Department, Edison Mayor Thomas Lankey, the Edison Township governing body and the Middlesex County Association of Chiefs of Police, led by the Metuchen police chief, offer their “sincerest condolences to George Floyd’s family.” “We hope his family finds solace and comfort through the support of the many communities who have collectively responded in positive fashion to his tragic death,” he said. “It underscores how fragile the bond of trust between police and community can be and the efforts necessary to preserve the integrity of this relationship.” Bryan said through accountable and transparent service, it is their responsibility to ensure police practices are conducted fairly and without bias throughout (Continued on page 3)

signed to the Woodbridge Police Department Dispatch Center since Dec. 17, 2018, had allegedly made discriminatory remarks in response to a photo of a young black boy with a sign asking “At what age do I go from handsome to a threat?” The photo was taken of the boy at one of the many protests across the country against police brutality following the death of George Floyd, an African American man, in Minneapolis on May 25. Floyd was killed by Minneapolis Police Department officer Derek Chauvin, who knelt on his neck for more than eight minutes after pinning him to the ground during an arrest. Chauvin was charged with killing Floyd on May 29. Repace allegedly responded to the photo “17 give or take a year or two. LMFAO totally kidding.” Hagerty said Repace was suspended

from his position on May 31 after the township became aware of the post. He said Repace submitted his resignation and was terminated from his employment on June 1. The Woodbridge Police Department released a statement on the matter on its social media page on May 31, which has since garnered 296 comments. “The Woodbridge Police Department is saddened and dismayed by a recent social media post attributed to one of its civilian employees,” the statement said. “Immediate action has been taken to discipline the employee. The Woodbridge Police Department does not condone this type of behavior from any of its personnel and is dedicated to the fair and impartial administration of justice for every member of our community.”

Colonia High School principal proud of students who created Colonia Cares By KATHY CHANG Staff Writer

WOODBRIDGE – Jack Reilly knew his group of friends, who came together to create Colonia Cares, would be able to do great things. And great things the friends did – Jack, Harrison Brindley, Emily Christie, Jordan Derkack, Mia Kruysman, Kerri Lishak, Emily Melendez, Nate Manente, Victor Perosi, Antonia Pierce, and Jose Ribiero – to help those in need during the novel coronavirus pandemic. “A lot of us are on student council and are involved in school,” he said. “So I think that’s why we had a lot of success … we put a lot of effort into it.” Colonia Cares began on April 18 and garnered media attention and praise from Gov. Phil Murphy and local officials. To date, the group has raised $20,000-plus for the local food banks. Mayor John McCormac and Ward 5 Councilwoman Debbie Meehan gathered the friends – with proper social distancing – in front of Colonia High School (CHS) to recognize the group on May 22. The friends are juniors at CHS. “We’re all in a very good position to

help people who aren’t as lucky as we are,” B Harrison said. S With that impetus, the friends decided to sell shirts and signs to raise money. To date, the group has sold 2,000 signs and shirts, t which were made by A and B Promotions a in Cranford. The shirts sold for $15 each. a “We found the most effective way was b to buy gift cards [with proceeds from the shirt and sign sales] from local businesses d and donate the gift cards to the food banks n and families in need,” Harrison said, noting s they made a list of local businesses in the Colonia section of the township and some places in the Avenel section of the township. The group held a collection drive on May 16 at the Evergreen Senior Center. Kerri said many people came by to drop off food donations and the group also raised donations through a coin toss. Jack said they received support from the entire CHS community: from Principal Ken Pace, teachers and fellow students. “I can’t be prouder as a parent, as your principal. What you guys did is part of who we are as far as giving back to the community,” Pace said, adding the efforts made (Continued on page 9)

Edison Council comes to agreement with resolution against COVID-19 related hate speech and bias crimes

By KATHY CHANG

Staff Writer

EDISON – The seven-member dais of the Edison Township Council has come to a consensus after reworking a resolution against COVID-19 related hate speech and bias crimes. “The purpose of the resolution is to address hate towards race, religion and ethnicity,” Council Vice President Sam Joshi said.

Joshi proposed the new reworked resolution at a meeting May 27. The council unanimously approved the resolution. Councilman Richard Brescher, before the vote, suggested adding “seniors and veterans” to the certain groups severely affected by COVID-19. “We all know what has happened in Edison with the [New Jersey State Veterans Memorial Home at Menlo Park] and we have all heard the majority of these cases

are seniors affected,” he said. State officials have expressed grave concerns for long-term care facilities in the midst of the global novel coronavirus pandemic, which is a problem across the country. Joshi said he understood Brescher’s suggestion, however, said he felt it would take away from the actual purpose of the resolution as hate towards race, religion (Continued on page 9)

Administration and teachers began researching early on how teachers could effectively reach students in a virtual platform. “…although there were many options available to teach virtually, Zoom proved to be the most effective for us.” “Not only did they offer their services for free, they also upgraded their security to help ensure student privacy,” said Sister Charles Wienckoski, Principal. SHS students are able to experience a “regular school day,” beginning at 8:30 am and ending at 2:00 pm with time for lunch. All classes from Kindergarten to 8th Grade meet for a regularly scheduled day including special classes such as Art, Physical Education and Health, Library, and Music. In addition, students participate in “after school” clubs like Crocheting, Virtual Walking, scavenger hunts, Bingo, Escape Club, and Sign Language Club with more afterschool activities being planned. “We even hold movie and campfire nights for some of the grades,” said 6th grade homeroom teacher, Cyndie Phillips. Parents are an important part of this process and biweekly parent meetings are held virtually to discuss successes as well as challenges. It’s also another way for teachers to explain and clarify future assignments and projects. “Our Catholic identity is not ignored,” said Father Anthony, Pastor. Students pray the Chaplet of Divine Mercy on Wednesday afternoons at 3:00 and participate in reciting the Rosary – all virtually. As a Blue Ribbon School, Saint Helena’s is always striving for ways to effectively reach students. Right from the start of the Pandemic the administration ensured that each student had some form of technology to use that effectively interacted with virtual lessons. If no technology was available or if there were multiple students in a family, Google Chromebooks were provided by the school. PreK-3 and PreK 4 participate in virtual classes as well. Plans are already in motion for the possibility of a resurgence of this virus in the Fall. Teachers and administration meet weekly to discuss how they can better serve the school community now and, in the future. Interested in finding our more about Saint Helena School? and ethnicity. At the last council meeting on May 13, some council members disagreed with Brescher’s proposed resolution against COVID-19 related hate speech and bias crimes, which mentioned recent alleged social media posts surrounding Council President Joyce Ship-Freeman’s Facebook page. The posts allegedly showed memes and posts with anti-Semitism and anti-Asian remarks. The councilman had said he found the posts inappropriate and felt the posts need-

Novenas PRAYER IS POWERFUL Oh, most beautiful flower of Mount Carmel, fruitful vine of splendor of Heaven, Blessed Mother of the son of God, Immaculate Virgin, assist me in my necessity. Oh, Star of the Sea, help me and show me herein you are my Mother. Oh, Holy Mary Mother of God, Queen of Heaven and Earth! I humbly beseech you from the bottom of my heart to succor me in this petition. There are none that can withstand your power. Oh, show me herein you are my Mother. Oh Mary conceived without sin pray for us who have recourse in thee (3Xs). Holy Mother, I place this cause in your hands (3Xs). Holy Spirit, you who solve all problems, light all roads so I can attain my goal. You who gave me the divine gift to forgive and forget all evil against me and that in all instances in my life you are with me, I want in this short prayer to thank you for all things as you confirm once again that I never want to be separated from you in eternal glory. Thank you for your mercy towards me and mine. + Say this prayer 3 consecutive days and publish prayer after petition is granted. Do not despair. Additional advice and petition. Pray the Rosary regularly. F.A.M.
