he Edison High School Eagle community and beyond have soared for two of their own. Melissa Keyes Ferro has been leading the charge to raise funds for the Anderberg brothers – Brandon, who is graduating from Edison High School on June 16, Connor, a junior at Edison High, and Robert. The brothers lost their mother, Barbara Blauth, a week after Brandon’s 18th birthday in November due to a sickness. The boys’ father Thomas had passed when Brandon was five years old. Ferro said her son, Joseph, grew up with Brandon from Lincoln Elementary School and on. “Back in November, my son told me Brandon’s mom was terminally sick,” she recalled. “We felt terrible. [Joseph] had asked me if we could throw Brandon a party for his birthday at the house so we got some gifts, cake and pizza. Less than a week his mom passed.” Since then Ferro said they have been making sure the boys have food and they are on track with their school work. “As time went on, it became more apparent they needed help with the house,” she said, explaining they were $25,000 behind in taxes and $125,000 behind in the house mortgage. “Brandon just had the weight of the world on him with losing his mom, the pandemic and worries of separating from his brothers and losing the house … it was a lot.” The parents of students in the Class of 2020 in Edison had began an Adopt a Senior social media page due to the novel coronavirus pandemic where people could adopt a senior and send gifts. “About a month ago I had put something little about Brandon how he lost his
mom,” Ferro said. “Instantly people asked what they could do. It’s been amazing how many people have been in touch. We had raised $26,000, which went towards the taxes. So it was on to the mortgage.” On May 28, Ferro created a GoFundMe page – “Be a Hero, Please help orphaned Edison boys.” “As a family friend, I have organized this fundraiser for Brandon and his brothers because this financial burden seems like a huge mountain for an 18-year-old to move,” she wrote. Ferro set a fundraising goal of $150,000 – $125,000 would go towards the mortgage and an additional $25,000 would go towards easing the burden of living expenses, property taxes as well as covering costs associated with Brandon’s education at Middlesex County College where he plans to pursue a career in law enforcement. The story hit media outlets two weeks ago. “Within that week [when Brandon’s story was published in a local newspaper] we had raised more than $100,000,” she said. “We wanted to make sure they were able to stay in the house and they are able to. Now there are much needed repairs for the house.” As of June 15, the site has raised $207,721 for the family. Ferro said Edison High School Principal Charles Ross has been wonderful, making sure the boys have food and checking in on them. Ross said he has always known he was lucky to serve as the principal of Edison High School, but the depth of assistance for Brandon and his family has let him know just how great Edison Township is. “Edison respects education so much, (Continued on page 8)

Metuchen school officials heed students call for racism awareness, diversity in curriculum
By KATHY CHANG Staff Writer
C
urrent students and alumni of the Metuchen School District, as well as parents, flooded Schools Superintendent Vincent Caputo’s email inbox calling for more racism awareness and diversity in the district’s curriculum in the wake of the events in Minneapolis. And after fielding the more than 200plus correspondences and listening to about 100 students during a student organized Zoom meeting on June 5, changes are being made. George Floyd, an African American man, died after Minneapolis Police Department Officer Derek Chauvin, a white man, knelt on his neck for more than eight minutes after pinning him to the ground during an arrest on May 25. Chauvin was charged with second-degree murder on May 29. Three other officers, Tou Thao, Thomas Lane and J. Alexander Kueng, were charged with aiding and abetting Floyd’s murder on June 3. Richard Cohen, assistant superintendent, said at a Board of Education meeting on June 9 of the 200 emails, 33 contained personal accounts of racism in the Metuchen schools. “I want to ensure everyone that Dr. Caputo and I read carefully and thoughtfully all those accounts as well as components of all emails and understand the importance of the messages, stories, feelings and perspectives that were shared,” he said, adding he appreciated the courage of the students who shared their personal accounts. School officials said from the number of experiences shared with the district, there was a common theme: a strong need for a more inclusive curriculum with more focus on African American history and Civil Rights matters of racism in America and a need for more diversity among authors offered in the classroom. Through a petition, students called for changes to curriculum and for more cultural awareness and sensitivity education. “The district has been asked to look and improve our curriculum offerings and practices on race and racism,” Cohen said. “We will continue to listen. … This is not the end of the conversation beyond all the emails.” Cohen said with the feedback, the district is moving to conduct an audit on authors offered in English, language arts and social studies; revise the social studies curriculum to provide more focus on diversity, racism, Civil Rights and oppression; and to teach empathy, compassion, social aware-

ness and problem solving. “We want to teach kids to have a voice, how to protest with non-violence in a civically engaged society,” he said. Cohen said the district has already began working with Rutgers University on the implementation of the state’s Amistad law, which went into effect in 2019. It ensures students learn about the history of enslavement and its impact on the nation. Along with the curriculum, Cohen said the district has also began work to provide professional development and support for teachers and staff on empathy awareness, and compassion especially on topics of Amistad, LGBTQ (lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender and queer), disabilities, Holocaust and genocide. Cohen said Metuchen has a lot of things to be proud of and also things to work on to provide an equal representation and opportunity for all district students. He said it’s also important to have discussions on issues of race and racism and provide a safe place for the dialogue. He said another Zoom meeting is scheduled for June 16. Board member Brian Glassberg said it’s also important to address the achievement gap in the district. He said in his 25 years in education, he has seen countless of times students placed in lower level classes not based on potential, but rather the student “did not act as a higher level student.” “It doesn’t take racial sensitivity to know what that word means,” he said. Glassberg recommended more parent outreach, public dialogue, more Saturday and summer classes for students in need of

improvement. “Beyond our district, we need to advocate to make standardized tests more fair and equitable,” he said. Glassberg shared his parents moved to Metuchen in 1972. The real estate agent warned his parents about moving into the neighborhood because of the many black families who lived nearby. “I can’t live your life, to know what it’s like to grow up as a minority in Metuchen,” he said. “But experiences taught me that the fight for fairness and equality does not end when the protests do. It will be your whole life if you accept that challenge.” He implored the black and brown students of age to vote and run for office. “Take a look at us here on the screen, you have some allies, but we don’t have diversity,” he said. “The students said they need more students and teachers that look like they do and I would say there is a need for more elected officials that look like they do.” Board member Ben Small, who is board liaison to the borough’s Human Relations Commission (HRC), said an appropriate phrase has come out of HRC discussions and meetings. “We can be better allies,” he said. Small said the BOE is governed by the Harassment, Intimidation and Bullying Bill of Rights Act passed in 2011. He read excerpts of the legislation at the meeting. “The last two weeks have been sobering for us all, for the local community and country,” he said. “We can be better allies and do a lot better. lation because we govern by that and what it tells me is that we’re failing collectively as a community and as an organization.” Small said the district’s shortcomings are evident from the stories heard on the recent Zoom call and the correspondence received by the superintendent. “We need a lot of work and not just in one area, curriculum, how we treat each other in general has a long way to go,” he said. Hazel-Anne Johnson-Marcus, co-chair of the HRC, said the commission was formed to raise awareness of human rights issues and work towards fostering an inclusive sense of community in the borough. She said since the events in Minneapolis, members of the commission have been working together to ensure all community members feel appreciated and welcome in the borough. She said the HRC is encouraged the district is including black voices in the curriculum and addressing systemic racism head on. The HRC includes high school senior Jordan Valliquette and junior Max Rubin. The HRC organized a peaceful protest and rally for social justice on June 13 at the Martin Luther King Jr. Memorial Park with NAACP (National Association for the Advancement of Colored People) of Metuchen-Edison, student groups led by MHS4BLM (Metuchen High School for Black Lives Matter) and local organizers with Speak Up NJ. The event was coordinated with the approval of the borough and Metuchen Police Department. This was the second event held in Metuchen; on May 31, a rally supported by the NAACP and the National Organization of Black Law Enforcement, drew 300 people. Democrat, Republican candidates for Metuchen Borough Council will run unopposed in primary election By KATHY CHANG Staff Writer
METUCHEN – Four candidates are on the ballot for the two, three-year terms on
the Metuchen Borough Council for the primary election on July 7. Incumbent Councilman Daniel Hirsch and newcomer Tyler Kandel are running unopposed in the Metuchen Democratic
primary and newcomers Stephen Kitsko and Eric Lignell are running unopposed in the Metuchen GOP primary. The general election in Nov. 3.
Residents file petitions to create new clean energy programs
F
ood & Water Action and residents from Edison and East Brunswick submitted more than 3,000 petitions calling on the councils in both towns to create a municipal energy aggregation program that would deliver 100% clean, renewable electricity by the year 2030. The ordinance calls for the creation of an energy aggregation program, which allows municipalities to purchase energy at discounted bulk rates, and to set guidelines about the sources of electricity used by township residents, according to information provided by Food & Water Action. “I support Edison implementing community choice aggregation for clean energy because it means we can use the power of bulk purchasing to achieve 100% renewable energy for our community at discounted prices,” said John Hsu, one of the
petitioners who helped launch the initiative in Edison, according to the statement. The program would be established in accordance with the Government Energy Aggregation Act, a state law enabling municipalities to set up these bulk purchasing arrangements. Under the Faulkner Act, residents of some municipalities can directly petition local governments to consider a specific ordinance. Once presented with an ordinance, a governing body can either pass the ordinance as presented, or put the question before voters. “While the federal government is doing so little to protect our environment, we must take the initiative here in East Brunswick,” said Dan Ulloa, one of the East Brunswick petitioners, according to the statement.
The efforts in Edison and East Brunswick mirror the successful campaign in New Brunswick, which led to the creation of the first-of-its-kind 100% renewable energy aggregation program in New Jersey. A similar program was also launched in Piscataway this week, after residents voted in the November 2019 election to approve the creation of a 100% renewable municipal energy program. Food & Water Action organizers were instrumental in both petition-gathering efforts, teaming up with residents to go doorto-door to generate support and collect signatures. “The global health pandemic brings new urgency to the work of cleaning up air pollution and protecting a health environment in our New Jersey communities. Creating a clean energy aggregation program is a simple, effective step that municipalities can take right now,” Food & Water Action New Jersey State Director Matthew Smith said in the statement. “This is a winwin scenario: Residents pay discounted rates for clean, renewable electricity, and they will be cleaning up harmful air pollution and reducing our dependence on climate destroying fossil fuels, all at the same time.”

Cantor looks back on career as she retires from Anshe Emeth Memorial Temple
W
hen Anna West Ott entered Anshe Emeth Memorial Temple in New Brunswick in April 1999 for her interview to become its cantor, she recognized the opportunity that awaited her. The position would bring her home to Central New Jersey, where she was raised. It also would allow her to fulfill her vision of a congregation that not only worshiped together, but made and enjoyed music as a community. Twenty-one years later as she prepared to retire, Ott looked back on a fulfilling career that placed her among the vanguard of Jewish musicians and clergy who have been transforming the use of music in sacred and community settings. By 1999, musical traditions in Reform congregations had been evolving. Drums, bass, guitars and wind instruments were being heard with more folk-style music at Sabbath and holiday services. The changes had been percolating in a few synagogues in New York and Los Angeles since the 1990s. Ancient songs, prayers and chants were being updated with new melodies and rhythms by artists like Debbie Friedman, Craig Taubman and Jeff Klepper. Ott, who had entered the clergy in midlife as a seasoned performer and teacher, embraced this new direction enthusias-
tically and was excited for the chance to the choir at Temple B’nai Shalom in East bring her own vision to this historic con- Brunswick, while being a stay-at-home gregation dating to 1859. mom to her three sons. Other noted musicians have followed, including Sam Adler, composer and professor at the Eastman School of Music; Eleanor Epstein, founder and conductor of Zemer Chai, the Jewish Chorale of the Nation’s Capital, and many more. Ott joined then-Rabbi Bennett Miller on the bima and immediately began enhancing the musical life at Anshe Emeth, while tending to the traditional cantorial responsibilities of services, holidays and bar and bat mitzvah lessons. Knowing that “music is the language beyond words that expresses feelings, thoughts and prayers,” Ott says her vision “encompassed choirs for every age group, guitar instruction that would lead to bands and more instruments and involvement not just at Anshe Emeth but also with the local Jewish community and the interfaith community at large – in short, sharing a culture of music with great stylistic range.” In her first year, she started giving guitar lessons and established the Awesome Family Service Band. New traditions evolved such as an annual Simchat Zimrah (spring concert) in May, featuring all choirs and bands at their best.

but even more has a big heart and never lets anyone fall,” he said. “Whether it was the baseball team raising almost $1,000, our teachers raising almost $5,000, or the work that has gone on behind the scenes before the GoFundMe [page] took off, I have been amazed how in a time of great economic uncertainty, the Edison and Middlesex County community has reached so deep to help. Located in the town of Bell Buckle, Tennessee, the label provides full marketing, video production, photography, promotion and social media support to its clients, as well as digital music servicing and artist development, according to the statement. “I’m excited to be adding such an established folk/grassicana artist to our roster at Bell Buckle Records,” Smith said in the statement. “I believe that Mara will add depth to our talent base and catalog offering for our customers and radio deejays. Mara is definitely someone that I have
been looking forward to working with. Her voice is unique, her recordings are beautiful and her talent as a musician is undeniable. I look forward to seeing what she has coming next and I am excited that it will be with Bell Buckle Records.” Levine celebrated her signing news with a special encore presentation of her CD release concert, which will be hosted by The Philadelphia Folksong Society (PFS) Digital Concert Venue on Facebook on June 7. “I am extremely grateful for the support of the Philadelphia Folksong Society, who have been working nonstop to help artists convert their cancelled live concerts to digital performances during the COVID-19 pandemic,” Levine said in the statement. The Adult Choir, renamed Kol Emet, and the Junior Choir for grades 3-6 were eventually joined by Jew Directions for teens. “It was important that there be continuity for the kids who wanted to continue singing Jewish music after aging out of Junior Choir.” Jew Directions became one of the temple’s most visible ambassadors, not only performing several times a year at services, but also at senior centers and youth choral festivals and even the State Theatre in New Brunswick. She introduced the congregation to the new movers in contemporary Jewish music, bringing in a cappella pioneers Beat’achon and Daniel Henkin’s Tizmoret; Sam Glaser, and Neshama Carlebach. In 2006, she started Ohavei Tarbut (“Lovers of Culture”), a subscription arts series that introduced audiences to Margot Leverett and the Klezmer Mountain Boys, flutist Mattan Klein, women’s a cappella sextet Vocolot, Middle East fusion band The Epichorus, and current Jewish bluegrass sensation, Nefesh Mountain. Ott found that people came to synagogue for a wide variety of reasons. While saying Kaddish or providing religious education for their children were very important for most congregants, many also came for book discussions, to work at the rummage sale, attend choir rehearsals or to simply be with the community on Shabbat. Her goal became building a wider community of friends through music. “We had an array of talented musicians in our band who deserved their night to play, as well as their legions of fans who wanted to hear them,” she said. The temple’s talented congregants found a welcoming stage and audience in 2008 at the first Cabaret Night, which continues annually today. Temple musical “stars” were born and also became part of the annual Purimshpiel. Sharing music with the wider Jewish community, she co-founded Makhelat Hamercaz – the Jewish Choir of Central Jersey in 2003 in partnership with Hazzan Sheldon Levin. Its members come from Middlesex, Monmouth and Somerset counties. Other endeavors in the wider Jewish community included directing Kol Halayla, the Jewish a cappella group at Rutgers from 2001-03; founding the Anshe Segulah Men’s Chorus to sing for Yom Hashoah from 2003-15; and founding what is now HaZamir Central Jersey, part of the Zamir Choral Foundation’s network of over 40 teen choirs in the US and Israel. She did that for 14 years beginning in 2001, conducting in prestigious venues like Carnegie Hall. Taking Anshe Emeth into the greater interfaith community of New Brunswick

helped bring about the return of the annual Interfaith Thanksgiving Service with clergy and congregations of many local houses of worship, including Jewish, Christian, Muslim, Native American, Buddhist and Hindu sharing words of unity along with their music. Ott collaborated on joint concerts with music directors in the interfaith community and gatherings for Martin Luther King Day and Earth Day. John Sheridan, organist and music director of Christ Church, joined Kol Emet as a singer in 2015. Ott’s partnership with pianist/composer Dave Schlossberg, known affectionately as “Piano Dave,” brought together two talented artists devoted to turning every Shabbat service into a musical celebration. She met Dave when he was 16 and a lifelong member of Anshe Emeth. Tipped off that he was a superb pianist, Ott asked him to play “Rhapsody in Blue” for her. When she needed a lead-sheet player to add chords and depth to traditional melodies, she asked him to flesh out some tunes, and a partnership was born. Schlossberg became the keyboard player with the Awesome Band and his playing time increased, while he studied piano performance at the College of New Jersey. In 2009, he became the temple’s fulltime Collaborative Keyboard Artist and an integral part of the music at Anshe Emeth. Schlossberg was the accompanist for an event that Ott calls her “most exciting and memorable career moment.” In July 2017, Kol Emet sang at the North American Jewish Choral Festival, an event attended by 500 cantors, rabbis, soloists, music directors, accompanists, composers “and all those who love and believe in Jewish choral music as an important statement of pride and unity.” Kol Emet performed six pieces and received a standing ovation, “that will not long be forgotten” she said. Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, Ott’s retirement celebrations had to be altered and her farewell dinner canceled. But temple members presented a concert in her honor via Zoom, and she will celebrate her last service on Zoom on June 12. The “retirement weekend” concludes with a virtual concert by Anshe Emeth favorite Noah Aronson. Her retirement is official on June 30. “It’s been a wonderful and fulfilling 21 years,” she said. “Thank you to all of my rabbinic colleagues, including Bennett Miller, Neal Gold, Claudio Kogan, Daniel Fellman, Rebecca Epstein, Maya Glasser, and current Senior Rabbi Philip Bazeley for their support and encouragement. I wish my incoming successor, Cantor Mark Stanton, a most satisfying tenure as well. • This article was submitted by Anshe Emeth Memorial Temple, as told to Sandra Lanman.
