Eagles soared, Hawks flew as Edison high schools celebrated the Class of 2020 virtually By KATHY CHANG Staff Writer

The district’s virtual senior awards program, which was held on June 15, and the virtual graduation are on the district’s social media page. Seniors and their families were able to participate in a walk up diploma session and have a professional photograph taken with the 2020 on the scoreboard as the background leading up to the virtual ceremony.
agles soared and Hawks flew as the Edison Township School District celebrated the Class of 2020 with virtual pomp and circumstance. The district held individual virtual graduations for Edison High School, its 61st annual commencement; and John P. Stevens High School, its 56th annual commencement, on June 16 due to the novel coronavirus pandemic. Graduation ceremonies for the high schools normally are held back to back at the Rutgers Athletic Center in Piscataway. Schools Superintendent Bernard Bragen and principals of the elementary and middle schools in the township congratulated the Class of 2020. The students appeared virtually from their respective homes for the ceremony. The ceremonies included musical selections from the Edison High School Chamber Singers at the direction of Kenneth Brown and John P. Stevens High School Chamber Ensemble at the direction of Andrew Denicola. The virtual senior awards and graduation ceremonies are on YouTube. The Edison community honked their car horns, banged pots and pans and yelled congratulatory remarks in support of the graduating seniors on the last day of school.

Metuchen grads carry ‘maturity and grace’ to the next chapter By KATHY CHANG Staff Writer
T
he novel coronavirus pandemic brought an end to many moments for the Metuchen High School Class of 2020; however, with maturity and grace, the class will forge ahead and soon celebrate many firsts. That is because the Class of 2020 “banded together and showed the community what it means to be tenacious during a time
of many unsuspected lasts,” Diego Lijeron, student council president, said during the school’s virtual graduation ceremony. The Metuchen School District’s virtual graduation ceremony on June 19 took the place of a graduation normally held on the school’s football field. The ceremony featured musical selections from Metuchen High School’s music department and the names of the Class of 2020 were read with the display of their senior class photo.

Use of private, public spaces in full effect as outdoor dining reopens in Metuchen By KATHY CHANG Staff Writer
T
he use of public and private spaces in downtown Metuchen is in full effect as outdoor dining reopens. The Borough Council had approved a business revitalization strategy at a meeting on May 26, which went into effect June 15 as per Gov. Phil Murphy. Outdoor dining is part of the state’s Stage 2 phased-in reopening plan as coronavirus cases continue to decrease. Metuchen’s Outdoor Dining program expanded on June 19 with two additional venues for safe, outdoor dining.
New Street between Main and Pearl streets closed starting at 4 p.m. on June 19 and will remain closed through 11 p.m. Sunday. A section of the Station Place parking lot will be closed for outdoor dining. The following restaurants serving customers on New Street include Greek on Main, Torino 2, Lotsa Balls, Nauti Cajun Crab, and Sushi Suzuki. Hailey’s Harp and Pub will serve customers at Station Place. This schedule is expected to continue each weekend through the summer season. Borough officials have promoted the plan to the public with the Metuchen Downtown Alliance and Metuchen Area Chamber of Commerce.

n estimated 27 million Americans have some form of osteoarthritis (OA). OA is the most common form of arthritis and is usually caused by the deterioration of the joint beginning with the articular cartilage. Risk factors associated with OA include trauma, previous surgery that excessively loads or stresses the joint. involving the joint, obesity and a lifestyle The weight-bearing joints are often affected, with the knee and the hip being the most common. Many people struggling with lower extremity arthritis related pain may be under the impression that there is very little you can do to manage arthritis pain other than live with it or have surgery. This is a typical misconception and is most definitely not the case. There are several viable options that can help successfully manage arthritis pain and in some cases may abolish pain entirely. Lose weight. This is understandably often easier said than accomplished. However, there is no question that losing weight is one of the most effective ways of relieving not only load and stress to the lower extremity joints, but also has been shown to lead to improved overall health, improved quality of life, and certainly decreased arthritis related pain. A 10-15 pound weight loss can have a significant positive impact on pain levels. Losing weight is sometimes a bit more complicated for some folks but generally if you control your caloric intake, routinely exercise, and consume a diet with an emphasis on fresh foods, high in fiber, and is colorful with fruits and veggies it can definitely help. It is advisable to consult with a nutritionist for specific details on how you can improve your diet and lose weight. Exercise. Research has shown that light to moderate activities can provide more benefit than harm to your joints and of course helps to promote weight loss. The key is selecting the right exercise for your condition, body type and any other notable limitations. There is unfortunately no one size fits all approach to exercise that will improve arthritis pain but there are a few activities that are typically appropriate for most arthritis patients such as light walking, pool exercise and low impact cycling. ProFysioNJ.com It is advisable to consult with your doctor of physical therapy so that they can prescribe

Office and the FBI in Minneapolis, but by the U.S. Department of Justice Civil Rights division, as it should be. As county prosecutors entrusted with the solemn responsibility of acting as the chief law enforcement officer in our respective counties, we recognize that so much of law enforcement’s relationship with the community is built upon trust. We trust the members of our community to follow the law and cooperate with our efforts to enforce it; our community has the right to trust that they will be treated fairly and justly by the officers who serve them. In New Jersey, the law enforcement community is fortunate to have developed a positive relationship with our residents. Our police officers and state troopers routinely conduct themselves with the utmost professionalism and respect for the members of the communities they serve. This has been particularly apparent over the past few months as our officers have managed the added responsibility of enforcing significant restrictions on our normal activities with sensitivity to the stress that our residents are experiencing in the midst of this public health crisis. We believe that New Jersey is home to some of the finest law enforcement officers in the country. The County Prosecutors Association of New Jersey is committed to ensuring that members of our local, county and state police forces provide fair treatment and justice to all our residents. Anyone who believes they have been victimized by a member of law enforcement as a result of bias or other improper behavior is encouraged to take the matter up with that officer’s chief, or contact their county prosecutor’s office directly so their complaint can be thoroughly investigated. We are privileged to have the leadership of New Jersey Attorney General Gurbir Grewal, who just this past fall issued a comprehensive package of policy initiatives designed to reinforce and clarify the Garden State’s commitment to excellence in policing. These statewide reforms are intended to promote the culture of professionalism, accountability and transparency that are hallmarks of New Jersey’s best law enforcement agencies. Through Grewal’s “Excellence in Policing Initiative,” the state is building a national model for strengthening accountability and trust between law enforcement officers and the (Continued on page 9)

Grassroots committee forms to ‘monitor, advise, and support’ Edison Water Utility By KATHY CHANG Staff Writer
EDISON – An organic grassroots effort re-established the Edison Water Utility and another grassroots committee will “monitor, advise and support” the utility as it begins to address the water and sewer system’s biggest needs. The South Edison Community Association (SECA) has created a new grassroots citizens committee called Edison Water Watch. “Our new committee members are volunteers with a variety of expertise,” said Dawn Santana, chair of Edison Water Watch. “Each [member] lives in Edison and are genuinely concerned about our town’s ability to provide reliable, affordable water and sewer service. Remember, our town has not operated its own water and sewer utility for over two decades, so it is creating this utility from the ground up. That’s going to be an enormous and expensive task.” Effective Jan. 1, the utility started to operate and manage the water distribution system previously managed by New Jersey American Water. Robert Smith began his role of managing the township’s new water and sewer utility’s day-to-day operations, supervising personnel and overseeing maintenance, in November 2019. For six weeks, Smith was building the new Edison Water Utility essentially from the ground up. He had been working on building a team of 22 members. Smith said the department has addressed the water and sewer system’s biggest needs in a five-year capital plan, which include connections to the three township pump stations. Edison’s water and sewer infrastructure
has not been upgraded in 60 to 70 years and needs to be replaced. In 2019, the township had proposed a $811.3 million new public-private partnership with Suez North America, a Paramus-based water and wastewater company, to see if it was the right fit for the township. However, public dissent against the proposed partnership led to a petition and a referendum with the help of New Brunswick-based Food and Water Watch. The Edison Water Utility was re-established following the passage of a referendum in September 2019 which mandated that the public water distribution system be operated and managed by the township. Smith said since he came on board, 1015% of 300 miles of water and sewer lines have been televised and cleaned. He said the current skeleton staff of nine members, which includes the supervisor, televises and cleans the lines when they have time. Santana said the goal of the committee is to protect people’s water quality and their wallets. “This is not political, it’s personal,” she said. “Over 12,000 South Edison property owners pay water and sewer fees for this new utility. Everyone pays taxes. Everyone wants clean, affordable drinking water and toilets that flush. It doesn’t get more personal.” Edison Water Watch intends to monitor, assist and support the town’s new water and sewer utility; examine the utility’s policies of hiring practices, outside contracts, repair costs and responsiveness to property owners; make helpful recommendations; and promote clean water initiatives and support healthy rivers, streams and water supplies. The committee will host public forums and partner with environmental groups to promote clean, safe drinking water.
Along with Santana, Edison Water Watch volunteers include civil engineer Jeffrey Reeves; financial expert David Brennan; Edison Greenways president Robert Takash; biochemical engineer Jill Mesonas; community activist Rajesh Patel; and small business owner Anthony Russomanno. Santana said the new committee has
no affiliation with New Brunswick-based Food and Water Watch or the 10-person advisory committee Edison Mayor Thomas Lankey appointed last October to assist the utility. The committee has not met since December. For more information about Edison Water Watch, visit www.southedisoncommunityassociation.com/projects.

load from daily activity without undue stress and fatigue to the involved joint. Surgery in some cases of advanced arthritis is necessary. Your surgeon will discuss your options and it is wise to consult with an orthopedic surgeon when other treatments and management strategies have failed. Surgical intervention for arthritis, especially joint replacement, can have a dramatically positive effect on pain levels and quality of life. Post operative rehabilitation is critical to achieve optimal outcomes. We recommend you seek a physical therapy company that is going to provide enough one on one direct contact with a doctor of physical therapy and a quality based model such as ProFysio. If it seems that your current physical therapy provider of choice is “too busy” it’s probably because they are and you should seek another opinion or option. To learn more about solutions for lower extremity arthritis be sure to register for the free webinar, “Solutions for Lower Extremity Arthritis Pain” on July 9 at noon as part of our Zoom at Noon series. an exercise program that is most appropriate for you. An evaluation and review of your radiographic imaging can help us determine the severity of arthritis and which movements or exercises will likely benefit your condition. It is worth noting that now with the availability of telehealth physical therapy, and the fact that it is covered by most insurances, we expect many arthritis pain sufferers will take advantage of the convenience and accessibility of this service and will benefit from significant pain relief. Manual Therapy is hands on treatment directed to a joint for the purpose of improved circulation, decreasing pain and improving mobility. This treatment is also known as joint mobilization and can provide significant relief for patients struggling with arthritis related pain. This is typically performed by a doctor of physical therapy, doctor of osteopathic medicine, or a doctor of chiropractic. Joint mobilization directed to the neighboring joints can lead to reduced load and stress to the arthritic joint by normalizing ROM and ground reactions forces. This means that your body will be better equipped to sustain normal

Edison township police and fire departments participated in the community-wide event by blaring their sirens and flashing their lights at the same time to help make it a true community-wide event. Edison High School When Shruti Garg left Edison High School and hopped in her car in midMarch to beat the senior traffic out of the parking lot, she didn’t know it would be her last time she would see all her classmates. Fast forward four months later, it seems like a “different time all together,” Shruti said as she delivered her valedictorian speech. “Now going into the future of a global pandemic, social revolution, and a possible economic depression, it’s valid to worry about the future or to mourn the past,” she said Shruti called on her classmates to be proud of the past four years, proud of staying close to relationships made in the midst of the pandemic through Zoom, driveby birthday parties, and virtual sleepovers,

proud of the community coming together during the trying times, and proud of the caring support around them. “Even though our senior year wasn’t what we imagined it would be and our future holds the unknown, we’ve adapted, we will continue adapting and we will all be better for it,” she said. Shruti called on her fellow classmates to focus on the people around them. “As the world changes, the people within, the people we love, that always stays constant,” she said. Shruti is attending the Massachusetts Institute of Technology in the fall. In high school, she was heavily involved with the Academy of Science Club, which organizes science events and competitions. She helped organize the school’s first Science Olympiad team, which competed in the 28th annual state finals of the New Jersey Science Olympiad held at Middlesex County College on March 10. Shruti also served as co-captain of the school’s math team and girls tennis team. Following the virtual graduation ceremony, Shruti said she was “really touched” by the community clap out, the “sweet message” in the sky from a banner plane for the class, and the way the district has “tried to make our commencement just
as special as always.” Shruti said the virtual commencement was memorable and she looks forward to a possible physical graduation later this year. Edison High School’s Principal Charles Ross said as the Class of 2020 leave the Eagles’ nest, he called on the class to use its “voice to spread your wisdom and ears and knowledge you’ve gained here to help you listen, understand and empathize.” Brian Chan, who will attend Rutgers University’s Ernest Mario School of Pharmacy in the fall, delivered the salutatorian speech calling for his classmates to blaze their own trail and embrace themselves as individuals. “Don’t compare yourself to others … never stop being you,” he said. Keeping with tradition, Stacey Zhang, senior class president, and Malachi White, student council president, addressed their peers at the end of the ceremony. John P. Stevens High School John P. (JP) Stevens High School Principal Anthony Shallop said the school’s motto this year was “If not me, then who?” “This mindset is paramount in our world today,” he said. “If you don’t take on challenges and do your part to make the

world a better place, who will? By continuing to challenging yourself, you will see continual, even greater, more meaningful success.” Akshath Shevetang Anna delivered the valedictorian speech. As the Class of 2020 moves on to the next chapter in their journeys, Akshath urged his classmates to reflect on the bonds created with friends, relationships made with teachers, lessons learned, and challenges overcome. “The attitudes and virtues of the community, that defines our high school experience,” he said, not the physical school building or grades. Akshath said they will remember the coronavirus, but remember it as a time when the JP community came together and overcame it. “That will be our keepsake,” he said. Rachel Tam delivered the salutatorian speech. She said it’s important to stay resilient during this time, continue to dream and take all dreams and make them realities. During the virtual ceremony, Irene Quan, addressed her peers as senior class president.

hen it comes to Japanese imports in the automotive world, most consumers immediately think of Toyota, Honda and Nissan. These are Japan’s Big Three. But, the real diamond in the rough, though, is Mazda. While Mazda doesn’t sell anywhere near the amount of vehicles that the Big Three pump out, it doesn’t take a back seat to any one of them when it comes to producing quality cars at a reasonable price. Peter Perrotta I recently jumped behind the wheel of the 2020 Mazda 3 Hatchback – with Premium Package – for one week to see if this under rated Japanese auto maker still has the mojo. Guess what? It sure does. Overall, after a week of putting this compact hatchback through its paces, I would say it checks off most of the boxes that would lead to an impressive review by this car reviewer. The only caveat I would have – and this probably would have to do more with me than the car itself – is that at a creaky 64 years of age, on a lanky 6-foot frame, I found that bending down to get into and out of this model car was sometimes a chore – depending upon how creaky my bones were that particular day. So maybe this isn’t the car for the senior citizen crowd, but that doesn’t take anything away from the fine product it is. This Mazda 3 Hatchback competes with the Toyota Corolla and Honda Civic in its segment and I would say it stacks up better than the Corolla and on par with the Civic. For the most part, buyers who are considering compact cars – especially hatchbacks – are generally of the younger crowd anyway. Case in point, my 21-year-old son thought the Mazda 3 Hatchback was “pretty cool”. For the record, the 2020 Mazda 3 Hatchback I tested for one week was the top of the line Premium Package edition with a base price of $28,900. The Premium Package edition comes standard with: active driving heads up display; adaptive front lighting system; leather seats; black finish alloy wheels; front and rear signature illumination; power
Mazda 3 Hatchback
sliding glass moonroof and paddle shifters. Additional options on my tester vehicle included: cargo mat ($100); illuminated door sill trim plates ($425); Soul Crystal Red Paint ($595); frameless auto dimming mirror ($275); Navigation SD card ($450); rear bumper guard ($125) and wireless charging pad ($275). When you add in the $920 for destination and delivery, the MSRP sticker price of my tester vehicle was $32,065. Mazda offers the Mazda 3 Hatchback in seven different models, both front wheel and all wheel drive. The base model, front wheel drive hatchback has a base price of $23,700. My top of the line all wheel drive, premium package model is considerably more at a base price of $28,900. Mazda redesigned the 3 Hatchback last year – giving it a sleeker, more sculpted and modern look. That look carries over to the 2020 Mazda 3. The outside and inside of this model is quite attractive, lending itself to a more expensive look and feel. Powering both the sedan and hatchback models of the Mazda 3 is only one engine choice, a 2.5 liter, four cylinder “sky active” engine that produces 186 horsepower, at 186 pound feet of torque. This engine is coupled with a six-speed sport mode automatic transmission. I found the engine and transmission combination in this vehicle to be ad-
equate. When in the “sport” gear selector mode, there was ample power to accelerate or pass aggressively. The all wheel drive, drive train and suspension were well meshed. This vehicle holds its own in any type of inclement weather. Besides, my issues with hopping into and out of the car, once I was settled into the front seat, there is ample room upfront. The back seat configuration on the hatchback is a bit snug. Moreover, many car critics have pointed out that the rear window visibility is not the greatest on the hatchback design for this model. I would have to agree. The interior design and ergonomics are solid on the Mazda 3. It lends itself to a generally good quality feel. However, I was not overly thrilled with the center console infotainment system, featuring a 8.8-inch, non-touch screen, color display. The system is controlled by a center console master switch. While the phone, music system and navigation sync up rather easily, I found the system to be cumbersome to use for what should be some easy tasks. The AM/FM Bose premium audio system – which comes standard on this model – with 12 speakers put out some impressive surround sound music, though. The EPA fuel economy ratings for this vehicle come in at 27 miles per gallon overall – 32 mpg in highway driving and
24 in city driving. The EPA estimates that the annual fuel cost for driving this vehicle comes in at about $1,500, as it uses 3.7 gallons of gas per every 100 miles driven. This model Mazda 3 has not been rated yet for the government’s five star safety rating. If you choose the more expensive premium package model it comes loaded with a ton of neat standard features including: 18-inch alloy wheels; power driver seat with lumbar; heated front seats; leather seats with a leather wrapped steering wheel and shift knob; rearview camera; rain sensing wipers; blue tooth; dual zone climate control and more. Many other car review critics have raved about the recently redesigned Mazda 3. The editors at Car and Driver give it high marks. And, U.S. News and World Report says: “The 2020 Mazda 3 sits near the top of our compact car rankings. Its engaging performance and upscale interior help it stand out in a highly competitive segment.”

PRAYER IS POWERFUL Oh, most beautiful flower of Mount Carmel, fruitful vine of splendor of Heaven, Blessed Mother of the son of God, Immaculate Virgin, assist me in my necessity. Oh, Star of the Sea, help me and show me herein you are my Mother. Oh, Holy Mary Mother of God, Queen of Heaven and Earth! I humbly beseech you from the bottom of my heart to succor me in this petition. There are none that can withstand your power. Oh, show me herein you are my Mother. Oh Mary conceived without sin pray for us who have recourse in thee (3Xs). Holy Mother, I place this cause in your hands (3Xs). Holy Spirit, you who solve all problems, light all roads so I can attain my goal. You who gave me the divine gift to forgive and forget all evil against me and that in all instances in my life you are with me, I want in this short prayer to thank you for all things as you confirm once again that I never want to be separated from you in eternal glory. Thank you for your mercy towards me and mine. + Say this prayer 3 consecutive days and publish prayer after petition is granted. Do not despair. Additional advice and petition.
