Gas, water company investing in infrastructure upgrades, replacements By KATHY CHANG Staff Writer

COURTESY OF NEW JERSEY STATE MUSEUM
Digital programs have been created to help people continue to engage with the New Jersey State Museum while the museum remains closed due to the COVID-19 pandemic. One program is Maker Space, featuring projects that mostly use commonly found household craft items and recycled materials. The programs can be found at www.statemuseum.nj.gov and on the Facebook (@NJStateMuseum) and Instagram (nj_statemuseum) pages.
lready in the midst of a pipeline replacement by Elizabethtown Gas, the neighborhoods in the area of Plainfield and Durham avenues and Central and Maple avenues will have water mains renewed as part of Middlesex Water Company’s Renew program. “We saw an opportunity for the area to get new assets and new infrastructure in the area without disturbing customers twice and ripping up the road to do the same type of work,” said Andrew Vaccarelo, project engineer for Middlesex Water Company. Vaccarelo and Hector Garcia, of Elizabethtown Gas Company, appeared before the Metuchen Borough Council to discuss the projects in July. Middlesex Water will begin a $3.7 million project to upgrade drinking water infrastructure in the northwest section of the borough starting Sept. 8. Under its 2020 Renew program, Middlesex Water intends to replace 3.3 miles or 17,500 linear feet of water mains, as well as service lines, valves and fire hydrants to help enhance overall service quality and improve fire flows. Middlesex Water is coordinating its utility work schedule and road openings with the gas company working in the area so work can be done all at once, avoiding subsequent disruptions to customers and area residents. The streets/intersections affected by the renew project include Main Street, Plainfield Avenue and Durham Avenue, Main Street and Martin Street, Central Avenue, Forrest Street and Maple Avenue, Elm Court, Talmadge Avenue, Main Street and Center Street, Maple Avenue, Main Street and Central Avenue, W. Middlesex County awards local small business grants
M
iddlesex County will award grants to 51 local businesses – a total of $1,200,450 – as part of the Small Business Grant program which utilizes federal Community Development Block Grant COVID-19 (CDBG-CV) CARES Act funding. The grants will be distributed in the forthcoming weeks to recipients negatively impacted by COVID-19. Recipients of this federal funding include restaurants, hair salons, retail, childcare facilities, health care offices, manufacturing, construction, auto repair shops,

Jollibee brings the taste of the Philippines to Edison By KATHY CHANG Staff Writer
T
he late Celebrity Chef Anthony Bourdain called Jollibee the “wackiest, jolliest place on Earth” on a visit to the growing Filipino fast food restaurant in Manila, the capital city in the Philippines. And the “wackiest, jolliest place on Earth” has made its way to the township – 760 Route 1 north – in place of what was the former Roy Rogers and Arby’s fast food restaurants. The location in Edison is the fast food chain’s second location in New Jersey after opening a location in Jersey City at 393 Danforth Ave. in 2013. A third location opened in July at the Journal Square PATH plaza, also in Jersey City. Since its official opening on June 6, long lines have been making their way through the drive-thru, oftentimes impeding traffic on Route 1. Law enforcement officials have even been on site directing traffic. “We’re so honored and humbled by the warm reception and support we’ve received from our New Jersey fans, especially amid the [novel coronavirus] pandemic,” said Maribeth Dela Cruz, president of Jollibee Foods Corporation North America, Philippine Brands. “We think of our customers as family so their safety has been our top priority as we opened our second store in the state in Edison in June. To provide a safe environment for both customers and our store team, we have not yet opened our dining room and encourage our fans to take advantage of our take-home, call-in pick-up and drive-thru options.” Dela Cruz said the Edison store has been a resounding success “not only because our fans have been eagerly anticipating this new store, but because they understand that we’re putting them first and are abiding by the recommended sanitation and social distancing measures.
“We opened our third store at the Journal Square PATH plaza in Jersey City in July where we’ve experienced similar success and offer take-home and call-in pickup,” she said. “While we look forward to bringing Jollibee to even more cities across the U.S., the safety of our team members and customers will continue to be our top priority as we consider further expansion.” Jollibee is the flagship brand of Jollibee Foods Corporation, according to its website. With 37 stores in the United States, 1,300 stores across the globe and many more yet to come, Jollibee’s mission is to spread the joy of eating. The first location in the U.S. opened in Daly City, California, in 1998. More locations opened since then in California, Florida, Hawaii, Illinois, Nevada, New Jersey, New York, Texas, Washington, and Virginia. Locations are also in Manitoba and Ontario in Canada. Jollibee is best known for Chickenjoy, which is “delicately hand-breaded to be crispylicious on the outside, with a secret marinade making it juicylicious on the inside” as well as Jolly Spaghetti and Peach Mango Pie made with real Philippine mangoes, according to the website. Bourdain had visited Jollibee on two occasions during his travel and food show “Parts Unknown” in Manila and in Los Angeles. During the episode in Manila he ordered chicken joy and spaghetti, which he called “deranged … strangely alluring.” In Los Angeles, he visited the Jollibee with another celebrity chef Roy Choi and he ordered an Aloha burger, little big bite with SPAM, and halo-halo, a popular cold Filipino dessert. He called the food “tasty.” For more information visit jollibeeusa. com.

Former journalists launch wedding business built on storytelling
T
he number of postponed and canceled weddings due to COVID-19 and its associated lockdowns have caused stress, the loss of a wedding date, and uncertainty about when a couple might finally get married. But a new business led by two career storytellers is trying to help couples tie the knot. Storyteller Weddings, a Central Jersey/Jersey Shore-based wedding officiant, planning and music business, launched this month with the goal of organizing socially distant, budget-friendly ceremonies in a pinch, held via video chat or outdoors. Run by two musicians and former journalists, Storyteller Weddings relies on their interviewing, writing and management skills to deliver compelling, heartfelt wedding ceremonies uniquely suited for each couple, according to information provided by its founders. “We don’t want to see anyone unwillingly give up their wedding date,” cofounder Jack Murtha, who lives in Neptune and grew up in Brick, said in the statement. “We started Storyteller Weddings because we don’t want anyone’s story to go untold. And we don’t want couples to settle for anything less than their dream wedding— even if that dream looks a little different now.” The idea of Storyteller Weddings began several years ago when Murtha officiated fellow co-founder Tom Castles’ wedding. Over the years, the longtime friends took on tasks for other ceremonies. Eventually, they noticed one thing that far too many weddings had in common: The ceremonies
were a bore, ridden with clichés and recycled readings, according to the statement. “Wedding officiants belong to the gig economy, and that’s no knock on them,” Castles, a longtime Middlesex County resident said in the statement. “But we realized that strong, reported storytelling could make each ceremony more gripping and memorable for couples and their guests.” Castles and Murtha believe they’re the people to do it. Both New Jersey natives and Rutgers University graduates, they met almost 10 years ago while working for Greater Media Newspapers, the predecessor to Newspaper Media Group/ Packet Media LLC, covering Middlesex and Monmouth counties. They’ve covered much of the state, from New Brunswick to North Jersey, for digital media startups and enshrined newspapers and magazines. Murtha and Castles have also reported rich features on health care, technology and the media business, according to the statement. So far, Storyteller Weddings has performed one wedding in the COVID-19 era. The socially distant ceremony in Asbury Park consisted of 14 people. Storyteller Weddings wrote and led the ceremony and handled vendor relations, from photography to floristry, in just four days, according to the statement. Storyteller Weddings offers wedding officiant, planning and musical services, at the last minute or months in advance. Healthcare workers receive a 10% discount on all packages booked before Labor Day. Readers can visit www.storytellerweddingsnj.com or email Murtha at jmurtha7@ gmail.com to book a no-cost consultation.

ensure the continued safety of customers and our crews, no access to a customer’s home will be required during this project and work teams will observe social distancing guidelines. Elizabethtown Gas is improving its natural gas pipeline system that provides safe and reliable natural gas to more than 292,000 customers across northern New Jersey. The replacement of 10,000 feet of gas main in Metuchen will affect 386 customers. The project started on July 6 and will be conducted in phases, Garcia said.
Designing Your Dreams NM-00436146
The work in the neighborhood is part of the company’s ongoing pipeline replacement program to replace aging natural gas mains and services with new, durable plastic. In many cases, gas meters will be relocated from the inside of homes and businesses to the outside. Relocating the gas meter outside provides enhanced safety and reliability, easier access to gas meters in the event of an emergency or natural disaster, and additional convenience in meter maintenance without the need for customers to be present, according to Elizabethtown Gas Company.
COMMUNITY BULLETIN BOARD Editor’s note: In light of recent events related to coronavirus, some organizations have decided to cancel their upcoming programs. Please check the status of any event before attending. The Metuchen Area of Chamber of Commerce will hold Cruise Nights from 6-8:30 p.m. Sept. 2 and Oct. 7 at the intersection of New and Center streets and at the senior center. ON THE ROAD PETER PERROTTA
T
2020 Cadillac CT4
Y
ou always remember your first car. For me, it was a maroon 1965 Chevy Chevelle sedan. It was a hand-me-down from my dad. There wasn’t anything special about it. It wasn’t a Super Sport on anything like that. Just a plain Jane Chevelle. It had a straight six engine that burned oil and sounded like a ticking watch while idling. One day when I was headed to the shore, I pulled into one of those Piney gas stations on the Black Horse Pike Peter Perrotta with it and the almost toothless gas attendant started fawning over it. He wanted to buy it from me. I looked around his gas station and saw a graveyard of old American cars that he obviously had bought and was in the process of “hot rodding” or “souping up” – as we used to say. I politely declined his offer, but came away thinking that maybe this old Chevelle is something special after all. What happens to most of us, after that first car experience is that – if it’s a positive one – we tend to go back to that same brand or sometimes even that same exact car when it comes time to replace it. Car makers are keenly aware of this emotional attachment tendency in the car buying process. That’s why manufacturers and constantly on the prowl to create a successful “entry” level car to their brand. They know that if they can hook you on their cars at an early age then it’s a good bet you will stick with it. Enter the 2020 Cadillac CT4. A brand new entry into the Cadillac line up this year.
The CT4 replaces the ATS and is slotted just below the CT5. Cadillac offers this new sedan as a possible entry level purchase to its brand, hoping to attract first time buyers and compete with the luxury sedan entry level offerings from Audi, BMW and Mercedes. I recently spent one week behind the wheel of the new CT4 and came away quite impressed with this new offering, with some slight reservations. Cadillac offers the new, sleek looking CT4 in front wheel and all wheel drive in four different trim levels: luxury (starting at $33,990); Premium Luxury ($38,490); Sport ($39,590) and the V-Series ($45,490). The test car I drove for one week was the all wheel drive Premium Luxury model with the option upgraded 2.7 liter turbo engine. The first thing I noticed about this vehicle when the transport company dropped it off for me was how beautiful its exterior styling is. It really is a sharp looking and stylishly designed luxury sedan. The second thing I noticed was its paint job. This car is Garnet Metallic, which translates in the real world to an almost chocolately/brown color with a tint of cinnamon. It’s a stunning color and Cadillac must have gone out of its way to use a high quality metallic paint, because this car shined in the rain. The interior was appointed with a combination cinnamon and jet black leather. The exterior and interior combination makes for quite a handsome package. Cadillac offers two engine options for the new CT4. The base 2.0 liter turbo charged engine is standard. The powerplant puts out 237 horsepower. My tester had the upgraded 2.7 liter turbo charged engine that put out an impressive 325 horsepower. The standard automatic transmission with the 2.7 liter engine is a fairly smooth eight speed. My on the road experience with this new CT4 was quite positive. While it doesn’t afford the driver with the perfor-

mance oriented drives of the Audi, BMW or Mercedes, this Cadillac has its own unique feel to it. This CT4 is quite nimble in the handling category, more than capable of providing an exciting driving feel through complicated twists and turns. It accelerates impressively – especially when you put it in the sport mode – as it is more than capable of making aggressive passes and getting you comfortably on to the interstate. What makes the ride of this Caddy unique is that while it manages to provide that nimble handling experience, it also affords a quite comfortable ride at the same time. It still exudes that luxurious Cadillac feel to it. The one area where I thought Cadillac could have done a bit better in is in the dashboard layout, design and composition. I thought the dashboard configuration and composition was just average. A little bit of an upgrade in this department will go a long way in making this vehicle a grand slam rather than just a one run homer. Added options to my tester included:
$2,500 for the upgraded engine; $2,000 for the all wheel drive drivetrain; $1,700 for the navigation system and a Bose premium audit package; $1,200 for the driver assist package; $1,200 for a climate package; $1,150 for a technology package; $800 for driver awareness package and $625 for that Garnet metallic paint. The EPA Department of Transportation gas mileage ratings for this new model are 23 miles per gallon overall – with 28 mpg on the highway and 20 mpg in city driving. The EPA estimates that the annual fuel cost of driving this CT4 is about $2,100, as it uses 4.3 gallons of gas per every 100 miles. This model was not crash test rated by the government. Overall, I would say that before you go running to lease or buy one of those fancy European import luxury sedans, give this Cadillac a chance. It just might surprise you. Panelists for South Asians for Biden discuss impacts of 2020 election to the community
T
he South Asians for Biden New Jersey chapter held a virtual discussion with South Asian political leaders New Jersey State Senator Vin Gopal, New Jersey Assemblyman Raj Mukherji, New Jersey State Senator candidate Rupande Mehta and General Counsel to NJ Democratic State Committee and attorney with Genova Burns LLC Rajiv Parikh. Middlesex County Freeholder Shanti Narra served as the moderator of “The Good, The Bad, The Future” on Aug. 8. The discussion was centered around what the 2020 presidential election means to the community, and why former Vice President and presidential candidate Joe Biden is the right candidate for the South Asian American community, according to information provided by the group. Gopal talked about the immigration policy of President Donald Trump and its implications for the South Asian community. He mentioned he would seriously doubt whether his parents or other immigrants like them would have been legally allowed to immigrate to this country under a Trump administration, according to the statement. He pointed out that while “our country is supposed to represent diversity and inclusion, there are many policies under the Trump administration which are not good for South Asians, like restrictions on H-1B
visas, according to the statement. Gopal added that Biden “is really going to be somebody who would unite our country which is currently divisive.” He urged all South Asian Americans to participate in the political process and ensure that people vote. He also requested South Asian Americans to ensure that “our friends and neighbors in other states understand how important this election is, not only for a few policy changes or change a few Supreme Court justices,” this election is “about the fabric of our diverse country which we all love,” according to the statement. Mukherji said the country needs stability, sanity, reliability and someone to put the heart and mind of the country first before his/her own ambitions, and Biden is a candidate who would do that, according to the statement. He added that with the current pandemic, the U.S. delayed and overall failed with its response due to Trump’s undermining public health officials and not listening to the experts, including the CDC. “The South Asian American diaspora needs to vote strictly from the lens of where Joe Biden stands on issues unique to our region and that he beats Donald Trump on every measure,” Mukherji said, according to the statement. He said that unemployment rates and the COVID-19 pandemic “makes this elec-
tion even more important, as we need a leader who ensures that we have a wellplanned strategy to mitigate the disease and to reduce the spread.” Mukherji added that Trump has not been good for the relationship between the U.S. and the Indian subcontinent, especially on trade and other major issues, according to the statement. Speaking on the U.S.-India relationship, Parikh said he envisions a better U.S.-India relationship under Biden, as has been with previous Democratic presidents, according to the statement. Parikh also dis-

cussed that Biden, with his experience and expertise in foreign policy, “will help this country to restore our place on the world stage.” Parikh said as president, Biden would create millions of jobs focused on manufacturing and innovation strategy that doesn’t ignore globalization, and value onshoring to ensure immigration policy to work in rebuilding the economy in postpandemic America, according to the statement. Mehta spoke on the importance of casting the vote in the November election,

NJ Sharing Network awards scholarship to Woodbridge student who supports organ donation
NJ Sharing Network, the non-profit, federally designated organ procurement organization responsible for the recovery of organs and tissue in the state, has awarded scholarships to nine high school graduates for their passion and dedication to raising awareness of organ and tissue donation. Each student was individually presented with their scholarship award at the NJ Sharing Network’s headquarters in New Providence during a private ceremony in the Landscape of Life Meditation Garden. Tiffany Rolon-Lucas of Woodbridge, a 2020 graduate of Colonia High School,
received a scholarship from the Hearts for Emma Partner Fund. The Hearts for Emma Partner Fund was created to celebrate Emma Rothman’s heart transplant and focused on supporting high school education and donation advocacy efforts, according to information provided by NJ Sharing Network. Tiffany was met with the biggest hurdle of her young life during her sophomore year when she was diagnosed with degenerative kidney disease. She fought for her life while on dialysis and returned to school with a catheter in her chest and a
tube in her stomach. Thanks to a successful kidney transplant, Tiffany is living a healthy and active life, including competing in high school sports, according to the statement. She plans to attend Seton Hall University in the fall. “We are delighted to provide scholarship support to these amazing students who have demonstrated a tremendous commitment to supporting our life-saving mission,” said Joe Roth, president and CEO of NJ Sharing Network, in a statement prepared by the organization. “We know they will continue to be strong leaders in

whether in person or via mail-in-ballot, “to send a very clear message that this country does not stand or tolerate hatred and divisiveness.” Mehta said “we must unite our country that we now call home, which is the United States of America.” Mehta, who firmly believes in equality, encouraged South Asian American women to get involved in the political process and leadership role, according to the statement. She said that for her “the fight is personal as I want to give my daughter a better life.” She added, “It is not only about India, we live here in America and we have many issues concerning South Asians in this country and we need to bring that positive change for better life.” Narra highlighted the importance of getting involved and participating in the election process for the betterment of our community. “As we have seen with COVID-19, it is disproportionately affecting Black and Brown communities,” she said, adding that the response to the pandemic “has been pretty inhumane.” As a Brown community, “we need to focus on who is going to actually see the issues of the people in this country and respond to them,” she said, according to the statement. South Asians for Biden – New Jersey Chapter member Dr. Tushar Patel provided information on the organization and why is it important to elect Biden in November. Karan Virmani, New Jersey State director for South Asians for Biden, extended his sincere appreciation to all those who participated in the webinar and provided information on how to get involved with South Asians for Biden.
