Mayor John E. McCormac, along with members of the Woodbridge Township Special Needs Community, celebrated the grand opening of the complex, located at the Cypress Center in Port Reading, on Aug. 13. The Cypress Park Recreation Complex was funded through a $1.5 million Recreational Facilities Special Needs Improvement grant from the State of New Jersey. “We truly appreciate the consideration and funding assistance received from the State of New Jersey’s Recreational Facilities Special Needs Improvement program that allowed the Township to move forward with the construction of the Cypress Park Recreation Complex and Level Playing Field,” McCormac said, according to a statement released by the township. “I would like to thank Assembly Speaker Craig Coughlin, State Senator Joseph Vitale and Assemblywoman Yvonne Lopez for their leadership in securing the funding for this inPHOTO COURTESY OF WOODBRIDGE TOWNSHIP novative and unique project which will provide recreational and vocational facilities to the The new Cypress Park Recreation Complex in Woodbridge includes a state-of-the-art Level Playing Field and fully-accessible sport and playground facilities specially designed for challenged and handicapped children and young adults of all ages and abilities.

Edison School District has requested to begin school year all remote through at least Oct. 16 By KATHY CHANG Staff Writer
T
he Edison School District has requested to begin the 2020-21 school year all-remote at least until Oct. 16. Schools Superintendent Bernard Bragen, in a letter to the community on Aug. 18, said the district submitted an amended re-opening plan to the state with “the health and well-being of students, staff and parents of the utmost importance.” “The decision about in-person instruction for the remainder of the 2020-21 school year will be made upon assessing conditions connected to the pandemic at that time,” he said.
Bragen said the district “will ensure the staff and students robustly engage in virtual learning during the period of remote instruction.” School administrators presented the mandated hybrid in-person plan to the public on Aug. 10 where opinions differed on instruction time. Board of Education members Jerry Shi and Shivi Prasad-Madhukar raised concerns of lost instruction time from a normal regular school day verses the proposed hybrid in-person back-to-school plan. At the high school level, students would normally receive 45 minutes of instruction time. The proposed hybrid in-person plan calls for 25 minutes of instruction time for
each period. Bragen said virtual instruction will never replace the classroom. And with 72% of the student population electing 100% remote instruction and 28% electing the inperson hybrid plan, Bragen said it’s important to find balance. That is why small group sessions are scheduled at the end of day for students and teachers to touch base with one another. Gail Pawlikowski, chief academic officer for the district, said it’s not about the time spent with the teacher, it’s about the design of a lesson and what task the student is being asked to do. “A good teacher doesn’t just stand in
front of a room and direct instruction, a good teacher is a facilitator … our teachers have been trained on this so they will push students to explore, research, think critically and be creative,” she said. “That’s what will make for a good lesson, not the time where [the teachers] spend with [the students].” Pawlikowski said the scheduled time in the afternoon will give teachers an opportunity to check in on students that may be struggling or students who want to talk about what they are exploring and so forth. Students will follow a schedule whether they select the hybrid in-person plan or the (Continued on page 14)

he Global Organization of People of Indian Origin (GOPIO) Central Jersey hosted its Community Recognition Awards and India Independence Day celebration on a virtual platform which was attended by invited guests, public officials, community leaders, GOPIO members and awardees from various fields. Honorable Consul General of India in New York, Radhir Kumar Jaiswal, was the chief guest, and New Jersey State Assemblyman Raj Mukherji was the Guest of Honor for the event on Aug. 15. In his address, Jaiswal said that watching both the American and Indian flags displayed and national anthems sung is a true celebration of democracy in the United States, according to information provided by GOPIO. For the first time ever, a Indian flag hoisting happened in Times Square, New York, which was a proud moment for all Indians, he said in the statement. A speech by the prime minister of India from Red Fort, Delhi, India, was a symbol of achievements and aspirations of future. He promised to work and wanted to connect with the Indian diaspora to exchange the ideas in national education policy and technology advancement with India, according to the statement. GOPIO International Chair Dr. Thomas Abraham mentioned that India has made tremendous progress in last seven decades and Indian diaspora in the U.S. has made tremendous contributions in health care, hospitality, information technology, science and education, and there are now many Indian Americans in political positions, including governor, Congress, Senate and state and local levels. Mukherji expressed his pride in Indian Americans in New Jersey and congratulated GOPIO and their members for the involvement in civic and community work, according to the statement. He added that it is a proud moment that there is a candidate of Indian descent for vice president this November.

hold personal meaning. This is why the program uses the term “foodways”, which literally refers to the ways in which people use food within a cultural, historical and social context, according to the statement. “This project has three goals,” Middlesex County Freeholder Director Ronald G. Rios said in the statement. “First and foremost, to help reduce food insecurity during the pandemic; to celebrate the culinary traditions of county residents; and to destigmatize the use of food pantries. MCFOODS and the Arts Institute are proud to collaborate with local chefs and home cooks in sharing these recipes and their personal foodways.” Each online cooking workshop will highlight a local organization directly working to meet community needs.
Thanks to coordinated efforts by MCFOODS, in cooperation with local culinary expert Chef Sank, the county is able to supply local food banks with kits that include all the ingredients for each dish, according to the statement. This program was also made possible with support from the Middlesex County Board of Chosen Freeholders, the New Jersey State Council on the Arts, and the Folklife Program for New Jersey. PSE&G to reimburse customers for food and medicines spoiled during Tropical Storm Isaias PSE&G is expanding its claims policy due to the COVID-19 pandemic so that customers whose electrical service was interrupted by Tropical Storm Isaias for at least 72 hours can be reimbursed for spoiled food and medication. The tropical storm knocked out power for more than 575,000 customers in New Jersey, making it the fifth-most destructive storm in our company’s 100-plus year history, according to information provided by the company. “We recognize that losing power in August, together with the challenges of the COVID-19 pandemic, was a hardship for many of our customers,” PSE&G President Dave Daly said in a prepared statement. “Given the unique combination of circumstances, we believe the right thing to do is to expand our claims process to ease the burden on the customers most impacted by Tropical Storm Isaias.” PSE&G will reimburse residential customers up to $250 and commercial customers up to $5,000 for food spoilage if their service was interrupted for 72 hours or longer between Aug. 4 and 12 because of Isaias, according to the statement.
For residential customers, food spoilage claims of $150 or less must include an itemized list. Food spoilage claims over $150 must include an itemized list and proof of loss (for example: cash register tapes, store or credit card receipts, canceled checks or photographs of spoiled items). Separately, customers will be reimbursed for losses, up to a maximum of $300, for prescription medications that spoiled due to lack of refrigeration. Customers must provide an itemized list of the medications and proof of loss (for example: pharmacy prescription label or pharmacy receipt identifying the medicine). Commercial customers applying for reimbursement must supply an itemized list of spoiled food and proof of loss (invoices, inventory lists, bank statements). Customers can apply for reimbursement at pseg.com/claims. Reimbursement claims cannot be processed over the phone. Customers will have until Sept. 16, 2020, to file claims. Reimbursement is expected to take up to 60 business days from when a proper claim form is completed and submitted to PSE&G, according to the statement.

By the time all was said and done, here we are donating $78,000 worth of massages to health care workers at Saint Peter’s Hospital in New Brunswick, Hunterdon Medical Center and Capital Health. “I then shared the concept with corporate and this donation project had become the “Hero” program and all Massage Envy locations in New Jersey will be participating. ome people bounce back from COVID-19 in a week or so, while others continue to experience shortness of breath, fatigue, weakness or even muscle or neurologic complications long after the virus is gone. People who have spent weeks or months on ventilators can experience profound long-term effects. To help these patients, Hackensack Meridian JFK Johnson Rehabilitation Institute
has created the Post-COVID Rehabilitation Program to enable patients to recover as fully as possible from the lingering effects of the novel coronavirus. The program is a key part of the COVID recovery services available through the Hackensack Meridian Health COVID Recovery Center. The center provides medical support to recovered COVID-19 patients in New Jersey and the surrounding Tri-State Area as they

continue on their path to health. Based on the screening results, the physician will create a customized care plan and connect the patient with specialists if needed, according to information provided by Hackensack Meridian Health. The COVID-19 virus affects the lungs, but also the heart and kidneys. COVIDrelated changes in the blood can also cause stroke and embolism. Some patients suffer cognitively and psychologically. The JFK Johnson Rehabilitation Institute program helps post-COVID patients who have been hospitalized with serious illness as well as those who recovered at home but continue to experience symptoms, according to the statemet. Just a handful of elite rehabilitation institutes such as JFK Johnson have post-COVID rehabilitation programs. “Some post-COVID patients are severely debilitated, said Talya Fleming, M.D., medical director of the Aftercare Program and Stroke Recovery Program at JFK Johnson Rehabilitation Institute. “They have arm and leg weakness and trouble with activities of daily living, such as dressing or bathing. They need continuous oxygen as well as physical and occupational therapy. Other patients continue to feel fatigued and weak even though they never required hospitalization. Sara Cuccurullo, M.D., vice president and medical director of JFK Johnson Rehabilitation Institute, and physicianin-chief of Rehabilitative Care Transformation Services at Hackensack Meridian Health, recalled a patient who thought he was recovered from COVID. But weeks later the patient found he could not get up the stairs or walk around the neighborhood as he could before his illness. An examination found he had low blood oxygen levels and needed pulmonary rehabilitation to focus on strengthening and conditioning his lungs, according to the statement.
Rehabilitation also helps more severely impacted patients. “We train you like an athlete and help you strengthen and condition your peripheral musculature and build your endurance, Cuccurullo said in the statement. “We had one patient who was on a ventilator for seven weeks. His health was severely compromised, but we were able to help rehabilitate him and significantly improve his overall function. JFK Johnson’s rehabilitation team members include specialized physical medicine and rehabilitation physicians as well as highly trained pulmonary, cardiac, neurologic, physical and occupational therapists and nurses. JFK Johnson has implemented many new protocols. All therapy is conducted in a safety-first environment. It has expanded the footprint of its rehabilitation services to space patients at least six-feet apart. Patients who need to exercise aerobically and aggressively do so on recumbent bikes and other pieces of equipment that are spaced 12 feet apart, according to the statement. Patients will be given masks upon entering the rehabilitation institute, and rooms will be sanitized between each patient after visits to a physical medicine and rehabilitation physician. Patients also have the option of telehealth visits, when appropriate. The Post-COVID Rehabilitation Program uses the full range of specialized programs at JFK Johnson. “The virus impacts people differently, Fleming said in the statement. “So to provide everyone with the best outcome, we use all of our expertise: neurologic, pulmonary, cardiac, medical, psychological and social. For many people who have had COVID-19, the negative COVID test is the beginning of a new journey. For more information or to make an appointment, call 732-321-7000, ext. 62134.

Additionally, the customdesigned field and facilities include wheelchair access ramps and equipment that is fully compliant with federal, state, county and municipal ADA and safety standards. In this case, the $1.5 million in state aid allowed Woodbridge Township to move forward with construction of special needs facilities that will benefit not only Woodbridge Township residents, but everyone visiting the Our House and R.I.S.E. programs housed at the Cypress Center,” Coughlin said in the statement. Our House, Inc., a private, non-profit organization that provides innovative vocational training, employment and recreational services to adult individuals with developmental disabilities, opened their Day Program and Training Facility at the newly remodeled Cypress Center in January 2018. ON THE ROAD PETER PERROTTA
2020 Buick Encore GX
I
f legendary song writer and Nobel laureate Bob Dylan were setting out to write the songs for his critically acclaimed “Highway 61 Revisited” album today, he might be a bit stumped when it comes to one of the songs on that album. “From a Buick 6” a raucous blues tune included on that disc was – I am assuming – written while Mr. Dylan was riding in a six cylinder Buick sedan. In 1965, this was entirely possible. If you fast forward to today, not so much. Peter Perrotta For one, there aren’t as many Buicks on the road today as there were back then. Secondly, most of the Buicks are powered by four cylinder turbo engines these days. And last, but not least, about 90% of Buick’s model lineup are comprised of SUV models now. “From a Buick 4 turbo” just doesn’t have the same ring to it. However, knowing Dylan’s penchant for creative genius, I am sure he would have figured something out if he was embarking down that road today. This all comes to mind because I recently just finished a one week journey behind the wheel of a 2020 Buick Encore GX – an all new model in the Buick lineup. The Encore GX represents the fourth Buick offering in the SUV segment and is slotted as its sub-compact offering. “As we look to the future of Buick, the Encore GX positions us strongly as a consideration for those who want to purchase small or subcompact SUV’s,” says Duncan Aldred, vice president of Global Buick and GMC.
Buick offers the Encore GX in three trim levels: the base Preferred ($25,095); the Select ($26,695) and the top of the line Essence ($29,495). The model I tested for one week was the front wheel drive GX Essence. There is an all wheel drive version available. My overall impression of the Encore GX was that, while it’s a bit small and cramped on the inside, it affords itself a much bigger feel once you start driving it. It is of average looks on the exterior – sporting the typical compact crossover SUV look that is popular these days – but inside if affords itself a rather luxurious feel, giving it a richer vibe than the window sticker suggests. While you won’t win many races – if any – with the Ecotec 1.3 liter, 3 cylinder engine (155 horsepower), the Encore GX does have a very smooth ride to it and handles well enough to make it exciting to drive. The folks over at Car and Driver gave the Encore GX high marks for its “upscale appearance, thoughtfully designed interior.” They also said it was a “good value proposition.” On the negative side Car and Driver says the Encore GX has “pokey acceleration times, blasé handling and the fit and finish doesn’t match luxury rivals.” To be honest, I didn’t find this three cylinder Encore GX to be all that slow. As far as handling goes, while it doesn’t handle like a BMW or Mercedes, it does have a smooth edge to its handling athleticism. The Encore GX I tested had $5,470 of optional equipment added to its base of standard features. Included in the options were: $1,790 for a technology package; $1,500 for a moonroof and upgraded 18-inch wheels; $770 for a convenience package; $520 for a liftgate package; $495 for the Chili Red Metallic paint and $395 for the upgraded three cylinder engine. The technology package includes: an
2020 Buick Encore GX ST
HD surround vision camera; heads up display; adaptive cruise control and navigation. The optional convenience package includes: automatic parking assist with braking; wireless charging; rear camera mirror with washing and rain sensing windshield wipers. With the options added in and the destination and delivery charge included, the MSRP sticker price of this Encore GX Essence model comes in at $34,965. The Department of Transportation EPA fuel ratings for this model are 31 miles per gallon as an overall average – 30 mpg in around town mileage and 32 mpg for highway driving. The EPA estimates that the average annual fuel cost for this model to be $1,300 as it uses about 3.2 gallons of fuel for every 100 miles driven. This model of the Encore GX has not been tested for the government’s five star crash test ratings yet. Buick’s 8-inch infotainment touch
screen system is one of the better and more responsive to use that is generally available on the market. I found this system very easy to sync my phone and music to and the navigation system was a pleasure to use as well. While this might seem like an easy task, it isn’t as easy as it looks. The bumper to bumper limited warranty on this Buick model is 4 years, 50,000 miles. The powertrain carries a 6 year, or 70,000 mile warranty. The first scheduled maintenance visit on this Buick is complimentary. While this Encore GX enters the segment of the compact crossover SUV at a very competitive time, I would say that its hat should be tossed into the ring when it comes time to consider an SUV from this category.

PRAYER IS POWERFUL Oh, most beautiful flower of Mount Carmel, fruitful vine of splendor of Heaven, Blessed Mother of the son of God, Immaculate Virgin, assist me in my necessity. Oh, Star of the Sea, help me and show me herein you are my Mother. Oh, Holy Mary Mother of God, Queen of Heaven and Earth! I humbly beseech you from the bottom of my heart to succor me in this petition. There are none that can withstand your power. Oh, show me herein you are my Mother. Oh Mary conceived without sin pray for us who have recourse in thee (3Xs). Holy Mother, I place this cause in your hands (3Xs). Holy Spirit, you who solve all problems, light all roads so I can attain my goal. You who gave me the divine gift to forgive and forget all evil against me and that in all instances in my life you are with me, I want in this short prayer to thank you for all things as you confirm once again that I never want to be separated from you in eternal glory. Thank you for your mercy towards me and mine. + Say this prayer 3 consecutive days and publish prayer after petition is granted. Do not despair. Additional advice and petition. Pray the Rosary regularly. F.A.M.
PRAYER TO ST. JUDE Oh Holy St. Jude, Apostle and Martyr, great in virtue and rich in miracles, near Kinsman of Jesus Christ, faithful intercessor of all who invoke your special patronage in time of need, to you I have recourse from the depth of my heart and humbly beg to whom God has given such great power to come to my assistance. Help me in my present and urgent petition. In return, I promise to make your name known and cause you to be invoked. Say three Our Fathers, three Hail Marys and Glorias. Publication must be promised. St. Jude pray for us all who invoke your aid. Amen. This Novena has never been known to fail. This Novena must be said for 9 consecutive days. Thanks.
