Metuchen Downtown Alliance receives AARP Community Challenge grant By KATHY CHANG Staff Writer
W
ith the uncertainty of when indoor dining will be allowed to commence again due to the novel coronavirus pandemic, the Metuchen Downtown Alliance has received help to expand and repurpose public spaces, outdoor dining and retail in the borough through the 2020 AARP Community Challenge grant. “The AARP is providing $19,000,” said Isaac Kremer, executive director of the Metuchen Downtown Alliance (MDA). “We are matching that with staff and volunteer hours … 150 hours of staff time and 500 hours of volunteer time, valued at $21,250. MDA is providing an additional $17,435 in matching funds for total project costs of $57,685. That would make this our
largest single project and one of the top investments in livability for any community in New Jersey.” The MDA is one of three grantees selected in New Jersey along with Trenton Health Team in Trenton and Harvest Family Success Center in Flemington. The project is part of the largest number of AARP Community Challenge grants to date, with more than $2.4 million awarded among 184 organizations nationwide. Grantees will implement “quick-action” projects to create more livable communities across all 50 states, Washington, D.C., Puerto Rico and the U.S. Virgin Islands. All projects are expected to be completed by Dec. 18. In May, Metuchen was one of the first downtowns in the state to proactively (Continued on page 4)
Off-duty Metuchen police officers save man’s life at Metuchen Sportsplex By KATHY CHANG Staff Writer

t didn’t matter that Metuchen Police Officers Wayne Karalevich and Octavio Tapia were off duty when they sprung into action to help a person in distress at the Metuchen Sportsplex. The two officers were playing soccer on Aug. 21 when a member of the other team came under distress. “Apparently it became so serious the person did not have a pulse and wasn’t breathing,” Mayor Jonathan Busch said, adding the quick actions of Karalevich and
Tapia saved the man’s life. The mayor recognized the officers at the Metuchen Borough Council meeting on Aug. 25. Police Chief David Irizarry said the incident on Aug. 21 was “yet another example of how police officers are never really ‘off-duty.’ “ “One moment they were playing in a soccer game and the next they were saving a life,” he said. “I am extremely proud of both officers for jumping into action and allowing their training to immediately take over under stressful conditions.”

Deb said she received great feedback from a survey on the effects of her presentation, which she left for those at MIPH, and the creation of the food pantries for those in need. MCFOODS was created in 1994 to help achieve food security and provide access to nutritionally adequate food and other basic necessities to all residents in Middlesex County. The program expanded from operating out of a closet in a park police building in Roosevelt Park in Edison in its early days to its current 5,000-square-foot warehouse in East Brunswick, according to its website. MCFOODS provides nonperishable foods and necessities to a network of more than 120 partner organizations throughout the 25 towns in Middlesex County to ensure that all residents have access to nutritionally adequate food and necessities at all times.

implement an outdoor dining plan, which went into effect on June 15, working with borough officials, MDA volunteers, restaurant owners, and the borough’s Parking Authority. The MDA and Metuchen Chamber of Commerce organized and executed a complex program in roughly two weeks – relaxed numerous borough zoning regulations, parking restrictions, alcoholic beverage consumption, use of public spaces, sidewalks and parking lots – to launch the outdoor dining program including the closure of New Street to traffic to provide open space for outdoor dining Friday to Sunday nights. Since the outdoor dining plan went into effect, borough businesses have seen an increase in sales with an average increase of 16.2% with Cai’s, Jersey Mike’s and Metuchen Diner reporting double-digit increases in sales, Kremer said. As of June 14, 29 restaurants and retail establishments are participating in the borough’s outdoor dining plan. The MDA provided direct assistance on submitting reopening grant applications to the borough for Antonio’s Brick Oven Pizza, Brewed Awakening, Café Paris, La Rosa Pizza, Lola’s Latin Bistro, Metuchen News, Orchid Kosher, Pink Lotus, Sumiyaki Japan, and Torino 2. With the AARP funds, the MDA will continue to assist retailers with expanding outdoors with sales and display spaces, mobile carts and parklets. Alley conversions will eliminate at least one dangerous intersection, Kremer said. “AARP’s Age Friendly and Livable Communities initiatives have guided our community revitalization efforts since 2017,” Kremer said. “An early grant from AARP New Jersey helped to create Imagination Alley. Now we look forward to helping businesses get through the pandemic by making downtown more welcoming for older adults, which will also make Metuchen a better place for people of all ages.” Stephanie Hunsinger, state director of AARP New Jersey, said the goal at AARP New Jersey is to “support the efforts of our communities to be great places for people of all backgrounds, ages and abilities and the coronavirus pandemic has only underscored the importance of this work.” For more information about the Community Challenge projects and AARP New Jersey’s livable communities work, visit www.aarp.org/livable. Back To School backpack safety By Dr. Leonard J. Somarriba, DPT Co-CEO ProFysio Physical Therapy his time of year our doctors of physical therapy spend a lot of time educating parents about the importance of backpack safety for our children as they return to school. But, this year is a little different. Due to the COVID pandemic, some schools are requiring our children to bring more supplies to and from school then they ever have in
T
previous years. Your child may be packing lunch, computers, text books, workbooks, and more. It is critical that they pack their packs intelligently so as to not stress the spine and other joints. Use a pack that has two straps and rests on the back if possible. Make sure your child uses both straps of the pack. This helps to more evenly distribute the load across both shoulders and the trunk. Using one strap, especially with this year’s increased load, can lead to unhealthy and potentially painful muscle imbalances.
Positioning of the backpack on the body is also important. Visually inspect how the backpack sits on your child’s body. The straps should be of equal length so the backpack rests evenly in the middle of the mid back. Adjust accordingly. Shoulder straps should be loose enough to put on and take off the backpack without difficulty, and allow free movement of the arms. But the straps should not be so loose that the backpack extends below the low back, or rest on the buttocks. Packs with waist and chest straps are recommended
Relieve Arthritis Pain Now
and should be fastened. This keeps the load close to the body and reduces strain on the spine and musculature. Also, some packs are made with padding which can be more comfortable but keep in mind breathability is a concern as well. Most of our children will be returning to school in warm temperatures and maintaining proper body temperature is important to avoid overheating. Organize the pack so the heaviest items are closest to the body. Also, you may want to consider last year’s pack size and whether or not it is made to support the increased load this year. Remember, if your child is having pain while carrying their pack or doing any other activity you should consult with your doctor of physical therapy for an evaluation. Visit ProFysioNJ.com to schedule your free consultation.

Bariatric support group at JFK Medical Center connects during COVID pandemic Hackensack Meridian JFK Medical Center has kept patients at its popular JFK for Life bariatric surgery support group connected during the COVID-19 pandemic. Through virtual seminars and appropriately distanced outdoor meetings, the support group has continued to provide insight, perspective and real-world experiences from and for those who have had weight-loss surgery, according to information provided by Hackensack Meridian Health. By July, the group was meeting outside, minimizing risk with social distancing, masks and fresh air, due to the COVID-19 pandemic. “In April, we began holding the meetings two to three times a month virtually,” Patricia Sullivan, RN, coordinator of the Bariatrics Program, said in the statement. “We started with a few members and eventually more and more patients were able to utilize the technology to participate.” The support group provides more than just social and emotional support; it offers an opportunity for learning followed by an open discussion. The group follows a structured agenda, featuring scheduled topic presentations and discussions on nutritional, medical, psychological, and social issues. Since the COVID-19 pandemic, the group has focused on how to stay on track with their weight loss during these periods of quarantine and working from home, according to the statement. “Daily schedules and habits have

Woodbridge School District requests to begin hybrid in-person plan Oct. 12 Support group
By KATHY CHANG Staff Writer
WOODBRIDGE – The Woodbridge School District has requested to begin the 2020-21 school year all remote and begin its hybrid in-person plan on Oct. 12. Schools Superintendent Robert Zega shared the district’s reasoning in a video post on Aug. 21. The Board of Education approved Zega’s recommendation at a meeting on Aug. 20. “This was a very, very difficult, stressful decision,” he said. “Many have been
passionate about whether or not they want to be in school or not. … We believe this is the best possible scenario.” The Woodbridge School District transitioned to all-remote learning in March after it had to close its schools due to the novel coronavirus pandemic. Since the district presented its hybrid in-person plan three weeks ago, Zega said they noticed two trends – students began switching from in-person to the all-remote option, and the district received increased staff concerns of returning back to school safely.
“Some schools, the number [of students switching to all-remote] stayed the same, [while] some schools the number [of students switching to all-remote] were as high as 15%,” he said. Zega said all staff members had the option of returning to school or requesting leaves. “We saw an uptick in leave requests from all our staff members,” he said. “This told us there still is a great deal of concern in our community about safely returning to school no matter how many precautions (Continued on page 10)

changed quite a bit since many people are spending more time at home because of the pandemic,” Amie Thornton, chief hos- B S pital executive, JFK Medical Center, said in the statement. “Being home more can interfere with progress for patients who D are on a weight-loss journey. Our virtual s and outdoor options were developed to i provide outlets where members can share their thoughts and challenges, as well as s discuss ways to develop new strategies for d maintaining a healthy lifestyle during this challenging time.” r In July, when New Jersey’s public t gathering restrictions were eased, the “ group conducted its first in-person, social- k ly distanced meeting in the JFK for Life s office parking lot. It was a big success and e the members were delighted to see one another again—even if it meant sitting 6 t feet apart and wearing masks. Adapting i to outdoor format with the new virtual c gathering has been successful, according to the statement. Members now have l two ways to share lifestyle solutions and b help each other reach and sustain healthy E weight – for life. Patients at JFK for Life are incredfi ibly involved in their care and extremely r dedicated to the program. d “Over the past year, two of our b members moved out of the area—one to Florida and one to Washington state,” Sullivan said in the statement. “Both were thrilled to be able to remain part of the group via the virtual platform.” “The support group has been very important and helpful to me on my journey,” JoAnn Tropiano, a 73-year-old group member who had bariatric surgery six years ago, said in the statement. “I have come to depend on the group for helpful tips and support.” Having moved to Washington state to be closer to her daughter, Tropiano tried to find another support group but was not successful. “Even though family is close, the COVID-19 shut down has been isolating. I feared that I would undo all the good that I had achieved,” she said in the statement. After receiving an email from Pat Sullivan that the support group was going to start up again virtually, Tropiano called right away to see if she could participate. “Even though I left the group geographically and the group was meeting virtually, I felt like I never left,” Tropiano said in the statement. “The group has saved my sanity. Reconnecting has helped me see that everyone is experiencing the same feelings and facing the challenges in different ways.” The group plans to host another virtual meeting for any member that wishes to participate and will hold its second outdoor meeting this month.

Metuchen School District requests to begin hybrid in-person plan on Oct. 1
By KATHY CHANG Staff Writer
METUCHEN – The Metuchen School District has requested to begin the 2020-21 school year all remote and begin its hybrid in-person plan on Oct. 1. Schools Superintendent Vincent Caputo shared the request on his weekly social media post on Aug. 21. “The Board of Education has authorized me to submit an application to begin the year remotely for students,” he said. “We do not take this decision lightly. We know many of our families have struggled since the spring. We understand the benefits of fully open public schools.” The Metuchen School District transitioned to all-remote learning in March after it had to close its schools due to the novel coronavirus pandemic. In its request to the state, Caputo cited limited air conditioning in all four school buildings, Moss School, Campbell School, Edgar School, and Metuchen High School. “[We] believe that it would be very difficult for students to learn in the hot environment with masks all day,” he said. “The district is in the process of upgrading our building management system and needs
time to ensure it is operating in all rooms across all buildings.” The district anticipates to begin the hybrid in-person Roomers and Zoomers plan on Oct. 1, which the district presented to the public on Aug. 3. “The month of October will bring cooler temperatures, reducing the heat burden on teachers and students, allowing them to more easily wear masks full-time,” he said. “This will improve the teaching and learning process. Once the building management system upgrade is complete, we will make every effort to ensure its proper operation. The new system will help us ensure that we are meeting recommendations regarding outside air intake in all rooms.” The district is considering bringing back its most needy students in phases throughout September, prior to the return of all students. “If this is feasible, it will be determined on a case-by-case basis,” Caputo said. The 2020-21 school year will begin on Sept. 3. All teachers were required to report in-person on Sept. 1. Each school day will follow the regular full-day building schedules.

IMPROVEYOUR LAWN THIS FALL! We Can Help By Aerating & Overseeding!
Compacted soil and heavy thatch are the two biggest obstacles to a beautiful lawn. They tend to suffocate grass plants by preventing air, water, and nutrients from reaching the root zone. This means your lawn looks less than satisfactory in spite of adequate fertilization, water, and tender loving care! Aeration opens up the thatch and helps relieve compaction. It should be a regular part of your annual lawn maintenance program. Aeration is accomplished by the use of a machine equipped with cylinder-like spoons designed to penetrate and shatter the soil. Half inch diameter plugs of thatch and soil are actually pulled from the ground during this process. The plunging action of the spoons into the ground opens up the soil-allowing the grass plants to breathe and promoting deeper, healthier roots.
Major benefits of aeration...
• Increases air, water, and nutrient movement to the root zone • Intensifies decomposition of thatch • Helps relieve soil compaction • Stimulates new growth • Improves drainage • Provides a better environment for overseeding • Increases the effectiveness of applied fertifizers & control products • Incorporates organic matter into the soil • Increases tolerance to heat and cold

Called Dot by friends and Mom or Gram by family, Dorothy lived in Milltown all of her adult life until recently when she was in the care of her youngest daughter, Jill. Dot was a very loving, kind, and generous person who never knew a stranger. All were welcome to her home with open arms. Her main joy in life was having her family to her home for any occasion to share great meals and great times together. Especially remembered are the fun Easter egg hunts she planned each year for children, grandchildren, and great-grands, delicious chicken paprikash dinners she cooked from scratch, and trips to the Ice Cream Depot.
A E t l W o p
Dot’s faith was a very important part of her life. She was an active member and elder of St. Paul’s United Church of Christ in Milltown. She was Milltown’s first female crossing guard, past President of the Milltown Fire Department Ladies Auxiliary, and a lifetime member of the NJ State Auxiliary. Some of her many interests included being an excellent league bowler, playing cards with the neighbors and grandchildren, gathering monthly with her “Club Ladies”, crafting, gardening, bird watching, playing bingo, watching any and all sports, traveling out to Colorado and Oregon, and summer vacations at the Jersey Shore. Also notable was Dot’s impressive finesse in managing the household, being a handywoman around the house, and always requesting a corner slice of cake. “Happiness is!”
s c a i r s
Gram, you are so loved and will be very missed! Donations in Dorothy’s name can be sent to St. Paul’s Church or the Milltown Fire Department.

In-person career classes, remote academic classes on three MCVTS campuses

Designing Your Dreams
s more and more New Jersey public school districts opt to return to remote learning for the fall term, the Middlesex County Vocational and Technical Schools have decided to institute a different kind of hybrid plan – remote learning for academic courses and in-person classes for career and technical education. When school reopens Sept. 3, students on the East Brunswick, Perth Amboy and Piscataway campuses will receive in-person instruction for their career-major and physical education classes and will be online for their academic classes, such as English, history and math, according to information provided by the school district. Students at the Middlesex County Academy for Science, Mathematics and Engineering Technologies in Edison and the Middlesex County Academy for Allied Health and Biomedical Sciences in Woodbridge will either receive in-person or virtual instruction, depending on their parents’ preference. The district had planned to have all students attend classes in person at 50% capacity, divided by alphabetical order, alternating between two and three days of in-person instruction per week, with the remaining days online, according to the statement. Superintendent of Schools Dianne D. Veilleux explained that the thinking began

to change in mid-August as Gov. Phil Murphy offered parents the option of choosing all-remote learning. Surveys undertaken by MCVTS principals found that 30-60% of parents would choose remote learning. “We just don’t have enough teachers to cover all the bases,” Veilleux said in the statement. “When the principals tried to cover all the classes, it became more and more difficult. We can give the students, in effect, their full in-person career-major instruction. Our kids are experiential learners – that’s where they excel.” MCVTS offers 34 career majors, including such subjects as advanced manufacturing, engineering, building services, health careers, graphic arts, automotive
technology, cosmetology, baking and culinary arts, dance, music and theater. The students will be divided by class with each group alternating between two and three days of shop classes a week. The school day will be from 8:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m., with staggered dismissals to promote social distancing, according to the statement. Teachers in academic subjects will teach remotely from their classrooms unless a medical condition necessitates teaching from their homes. Teachers in the two academies will teach both remote and in-person classes,
but not at the same time. All of the safety protocols mandated by the state will be observed, with both students and staff required to wear face coverings while in the school buildings, according to the statement. Outdoor settings will be used as much as possible for physical education classes and lunches. Parents are required to conduct health screenings daily and report the status of their children online. Students entering a school building will undergo a temperature check. Students will be encouraged to wash hands frequently and all equipment will be sanitized between uses.

O Glorious St. Therese, whom Almighty God has raised up to aid and inspire the human family, I implore your Miraculous Intercession. You are so powerful in obtaining every need of body and spirit from the Heart of God. Holy Mother Church proclaims you “Prodigy of Miracles... the Greatest Saint of Modern Times. Now I fervently beseech you to answer my petition (mention here) and to carry out your promises of spending Heaven doing good upon earth... Of letting fall from Heaven a Shower of Roses. Little Flower, give me your childlike faith, to see the Face of God in the people and experiences of my life, and to love God with full confidence. St. Therese, my Carmelite Sister, I will fulfill your plea “to be made known everywhere and I will continue to lead others to Jesus through you. Amen.

PRAYER IS POWERFUL
Prayer to St. Jude
St. Therese Novena
Oh, most beautiful flower of Mount Carmel, fruitful vine of splendor of Heaven, Blessed Mother of the son of God, Immaculate Virgin, assist me in my necessity. Oh, Star of the Sea, help me and show me herein you are my Mother. Oh, Holy Mary Mother of God, Queen of Heaven and Earth! I humbly beseech you from the bottom of my heart to succor me in this petition. There are none that can withstand your power. Oh, show me herein you are my Mother. Oh Mary conceived without sin pray for us who have recourse in thee (3Xs). Holy Mother, I place this cause in your hands (3Xs). Holy Spirit, you who solve all problems, light all roads so I can attain my goal. You who gave me the divine gift to forgive and forget all evil against me and that in all instances in my life you are with me, I want in this short prayer to thank you for all things as you confirm once again that I never want to be separated from you in eternal glory. Thank you for your mercy towards me and mine. + Say this prayer 3 consecutive days and publish prayer after petition is granted. Do not despair. Additional advice and petition. Pray the Rosary regularly.
Most holy Apostle St. Jude, faithful servant and friend of Jesus the name of the traitor who delivered the beloved Master into the hands of His enemies, has caused you to be forgotten by many but the Church honors and prays to you universally as the patron of hopeless cases, of things despaired of. Pray for me who am so miserable; make use I implore you of that particular privilege accorded to you to bring visible and speedy help, where help is almost despaired of. Come to my assistance in this great need that I may receive the consolations and help of Heaven in all my necessities, tribulations and sufferings particularly (here make your request) and that I may bless God with you and all the elect forever. I PROMISE you, blessed St. Jude to be ever mindful of this great favor and I will never cease to honor you as my special and powerful patron and to do all in my power to encourage devotion to you. Amen. May the most just, most high and most adorable Will of God be in all things done, praised and magnified, forever and ever. Amen.
O little Therese of the Child Jesus, please pick for me a rose from the heavenly gardens and send it to me as a message of love. O little Flower of Jesus, ask God today to grant the favors I now place with confidence in your hands.. (mention specific requests) St. Therese, help me to always believe as you did, in God’s great love for me, so that I might imitate your “Little Way each day. Amen.
