Three high school friends develop tool for consumers By KATHY CHANG Staff Writer

T

hree high school friends came together to develop PriceMerge, a tool to help consumers during the novel coronavirus pandemic. Archit Mehta, a senior at West Windsor-Plainsboro High School North; Parth Harish, a junior at John P. Stevens High School; and Darshan Lakshminaryan, a junior at Middlesex County Academy for Science, Mathematics and Engineering Technologies in Edison, launched PriceMerge in August. With the demand for necessary products during the coronavirus – face masks, hand sanitizer, soap and tissues – PriceMerge helps consumers compare prices of any product across thousands of websites and provides users with the best deals. With PriceMerge, consumers can also indicate a price they feel comfortable pur-

chasing the products. The consumers will then receive an email when the price of the products falls below their indicated value. “For example, if the current best price for tissues is $10, and a user wants to buy them when they hit $5, they can indicate this on our website and they’ll receive an email with the link to the product when the product falls below $5,” Archit said. Within the first week, the site saw more than 10,000 visitors, which Archit called “thrilling.” “That meant my product was truly making a difference in the world and was helping others to save money during the pandemic, which plagues our nation today,” he said. “The response so far has also been overwhelming with many visitors letting us know that our product was a game changer for them, helping to save time, energy, and, most of all, money. These responses motivate me to continue working on the website even in the face of any difficulties

I encounter, because they remind me how this product has the potential to completely revolutionize the living situations of many Americans who don’t have steady sources of income.” Archit added that building PriceMerge has helped him realize the power of technology, while simultaneously motivating him to continue to help others in the world by using the technological skills he possesses in order to create change. Parth said he found “designing the algorithm” as the “most satisfying aspect of developing PriceMerge.” “After starting with one functionality, we reviewed feedback, built more attributes to the app, and optimized our methods,” he said. “My initial motive for PriceMerge was to give back to the community, but the learning opportunities this experience had to offer was what captivated my (Continued on page 4)

chools in the Diocese of Metuchen are in a position to quickly pivot as circumstances necessitate as students begin the 2020-21 school year. Anthony P. Kearns III, Esq., spokesperson and chancellor for the Diocese of Metuchen said each school’s plan for reopening differ slightly, however, the schools are offering in-person instruction, with a virtual learning option. There was no universal start date for the Catholic schools in the diocese. Some started before the Labor Day weekend and some started this week. The 27 Catholic schools around the four-county diocese in Middlesex, Somerset, Hunterdon and Warren are still enrolling for the fall. All schools were ordered to close on March 18 through Gov. Phil Murphy’s executive order in efforts to flatten the curve of the COVID-19 outbreak. All schools had moved to remote learning for the remaining of the 2019-20 school year. Kearns said each school worked with a task force of administrators, parents and teachers to finalize individual plans for the 2020-21 school year. The plans address the principles of safety and health, technology, Catholic identity, curriculum and assessment, and the way in which they will maintain their school communities. “The guiding principle for reopening is and will remain the safety and well-being of each of our students,” he said. JFK Medical Center expands services with new cardiac catheterization lab

H

ackensack Meridian JFK Medical Center opened its new, state-of-theart cardiac catheterization lab, offering expert care, the latest diagnostic and interventional technologies, and special amenities for patients to enhance their care experience. The new cath lab, one of three at JFK Medical Center, is part of a $12 million investment by Hackensack Meridian Health in cardiac catheterization services at the medical center. “The transformation of our cardiac catheterization lab reflects our mission and commitment to provide high quality care and an exceptional patient experience,” Amie Thornton, chief hospital executive, Hackensack Meridian JFK Medical Center, said in a prepared statement on Aug. 31. “Our cardiac catheterization team has outstanding leadership and a record of excellent clinical outcomes. Cardiologists choose the JFK Cardiac Catheterization Lab because of the quality of its staff and services. With cardiac conditions being among the most widespread health care challenges in society, our new facility and advanced technologies will benefit the communities we serve.” JFK Medical Center’s Cardiac Catheterization Lab provides one of the largest volumes of cardiac interventional procedures in New Jersey, according to the statement. Physicians at the lab treat approximately 3,500 patients a year, including diagnostic catheterizations and 1,300 percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI) procedures. Diagnostic procedures help to identify life-threatening heart conditions, and PCI is a non-surgical procedure that opens blood vessels in the heart to restore critical blood flow. The investment in the new cardiac lab underscores JFK Medical Center’s recent designation by The American College of Cardiology (ACC) as a HeartCARE Center: National Distinction of Excellence program. This honor recognizes the hospital for its commitment to a comprehensive high-quality cardiac culture. JFK is the first and only hospital in New Jersey with this honor, according to the statement. The new Cardiac Catheterization Lab is fully accredited by the American College of Cardiology as well, allowing consolidation and expansion of all non-invasive cardiac procedures in the new Lab. The ACC Cardiac Catheterization Lab accreditation is based on rigorous onsite evaluation of the staff’s ability to evaluate, diagnose and treat patients who come to the cardiac catheterization lab for care.

“I’m proud of our ACC accreditation and of the fact that our cardiac catheterization lab provides one of the largest volumes of cardiac interventional procedures in New Jersey,” Dr. Saleem Husain, interventional cardiologist and medical director of the JFK Medical Center Cardiac Catheterization Lab, said in the statement. Husain has more than 30 years of experience in medicine and cardiology, and he is a pioneer in the concept of “same-day discharge” after a coronary intervention. “Our new lab and expanded services allow us to perform more interventions, including cardiac endo-vascular procedures with new technologies, such as Ekos and FlowTriever in the management of submassive pulmonary embolism, a lifethreatening event,” he said in the statement. “Our expert team is truly committed to providing the most innovative technologies in a collaborative environment focused on the cardiac health of our patients and their recovery.” Ekos is a new device that simultaneously delivers ultrasound energy to mechanically dislodge and loosen blood clots to enable lower and safer doses of medicines that treat blood clots. The FlowTriever is a system that removes clots through both mechanical and aspiration mechanisms of action and captures and removes large clots from big blood vessels. “As part of the ACC Accreditation, we have demonstrated exceptional competency in treating patients who require cardiac catheterization, and we have standardized the assessment process for cardiac catheterization to ensure quality and patient safety,” Herminio Rivera, cardiac services director, JFK Medical Center said in the statement. “We have ensured that care for sedation, infection control, radiation safety and all other protocols are optimized and fully coordinated. We have also enhanced physician-to-patient communications, patient-family communication, discharge instructions and follow-up information.” Amie Thornton added, “As part of the most comprehensive health network in the state, JFK Medical Center offers more options than ever before for treating cardiovascular illnesses. Our collective strengths and collaboration with experts in our network – Hackensack University Medical Center and Jersey Shore University Medical Center – ensure seamless and expedited care for the most complex heart conditions. Our patients have incredible access to heart experts, close to home.”

Hackensack Meridian JFK Medical Center opened a new, state-of-the-art cardiac catheterization lab.

Latest Technologies JFK Medical Center’s new Cardiac Catheterization Lab uses the most advanced technologies in cardiac catheterization care, according to the statement. The Impella “next generation” heart pump is a small pump that temporarily assists the pumping function of the heart during stent placement. SmartAssist is designed to improve patient outcomes by using real-time information to optimize use of the pump in cardiac interventional procedures for better patient care. The lab also uses Impella Connect, a cloud-based remote view of the Impella device for collaborative patient management and better patient outcomes. Cardiologists at JFK also use advanced pump metrics to assist in positioning, managing and removing the Impella device. Another advanced technology used by interventional cardiologists at JFK is the Innova IGS 5 advanced digital X-ray imaging system. This radiological advance helps the JFK cardiologists treat diseases of the heart and blood vessels, such as heart attacks and cardiac valve abnormalities. The Innova IGS 5 system provides the high image quality necessary for visualizing small vessels and devices within the heart while helping to keep radiation as low as possible to adapt to all cardiovascular procedures. Cardiologists at the JFK Cardiac Catheterization Lab also use a digital innovation, the secure IntraSight interventional applications platform to seamlessly inte-

grate intravascular imaging and physiology applications for image-guided procedures. IntraSight optimizes the work of the cardiac catheterization lab, providing tableside touchscreen controls, systems integration, data management and remote service diagnostics. “We treat a range of complex cardiovascular diseases with interventional cardiology,” Husain said in the statement. “With technology like IntraSight, we are able to integrate different sources of information, decide on the best course of treatment for the individual patients, carry out the procedure and assess the effectiveness. The IntraSight technology allows us to integrate intravascular diagnostic applications in a seamless workflow in the interventional cardiology lab.”

Patient Amenities and Services As a companion to the most advanced technologies, JFK Medical Center also offers high-touch features, such as a postprocedure patient lounge which has the atmosphere of a café or hotel lounge, where patients can recover from their catheterization procedures in comfort, sitting in new recliners/lounge chairs and enjoying refreshments and meals, according to the statement. “Most patients who have cardiac catheterization go home the same day of the procedure, and at JFK Medical Center the amenities in the lounge help patients (Continued on page 11)

interest. The obstacles faced along the way were intriguing because I knew that the solutions existed, and that it was just a matter of research to find them.” After various versions of PriceMerge were sent out for feedback and beta testing, Parth said the work did not come to an end. “Marketing the application proved to be another complex process, but definitely one I had lots of fun in,” he said. “PriceMerge will not be one of those applications that is published and then never enhanced again. With time, comes new problems, ideas, and the need for new attributes.”

JFK Johnson Rehabilitation Institute offers therapy for children with auditory processing condition

A

s education continues this fall with virtual learning environments for many students, there may be challenges for children who require additional learning support. One concern is identifying children who have difficulty with auditory processing, a disorder that affects the ability to understand speech. Auditory processing is the ability to interpret sounds and involves the brain identifying and analyzing incoming sounds to attach meaning to them. Audiologists at Hackensack Meridian JFK Johnson Rehabilitation Institute are available to help to identify children who

may have auditory processing difficulties. “Children learn in many different ways, and since virtual education is primarily an auditory learning model, it may not be the ideal learning environment for every child,” Virginia Gural-Toth, a doctor of audiology at JFK Johnson Rehabilitation Institute, said in a prepared statement. “Successful virtual learning is dependent on adequate language skills, good attention skills, and strong auditory skills. If a child has difficulty in any of these areas, he or she is more likely to quickly fall behind in school.” Gural-Toth advised that parents and caregivers can identify certain behaviors

present in children with auditory processing difficulties, get professional support, if needed, and make environmental changes to help children overcome these issues. “Symptoms include difficulty understanding speech in noisy environments, not following directions and not being able to distinguish between similar sounds,” she said in the statement. According to the American Speech and Hearing Association, there is not a definite known cause of auditory processing disorder. The primary goal of treatment for an auditory processing disorder is to increase

the child’s ability to use information that is received through hearing, according to the statement. This can be accomplished three ways: Making changes to the environment to improve a child’s access to auditory information: for example, by reducing the noise in the room or using an assistive device that will amplify the teacher’s voice; teaching the child to become a more active listener by developing ways to determine and retain the content and meaning of each message he or she hears. And lastly, by getting help from a speech therapist, which will provide direct intervention for problems or areas where the child may need special attention. Key identifiers of children with auditory processing problems include: if the child is having difficulties remembering information, directions, lists or study materials; if the child is mishearing words and misunderstands what is said, and if the child is distracted while attending to class information presented virtually. An evaluation may be indicated to rule out an auditory processing deficit. Audiologists at JFK Johnson Rehabilitation Institute are scheduling in person patient visits with late afternoon and evening hours. A

s part of its ongoing effort to ensure that voters and election officials have the information they need to successfully use the U.S. Mail to vote in the November general election, the U.S. Postal Service has launched a new election mail website. The website, which provides clear and concise information about voting by mail, is available 24/7 by visiting usps.com/ votinginfo. The postal service recognizes that many states are choosing to expand mail-in voting options in the upcoming elections and that there will likely be a significant increase in demand among postal customers to participate in those elections by using the mail, according to a statement provided on Aug. 21. In response, the postal service has updated its website to serve both voting customers seeking information on how to use the mail to vote and election officials seeking resources to help make their administration of the upcoming elections a success. For domestic voters, the website provides direct links to federal election resources as well as links to state-specific resources. Toms River man sentenced to three years in prison for fatally striking a pedestrian in Metuchen By KATHY CHANG Staff Writer

NEW BRUNSWICK – A Toms River man was sentenced to three years in prison for fatally striking a 51-year-old pedestrian in a crosswalk in March, Middlesex County Prosecutor Yolanda Ciccone said in a release. Paddy Flynn was sentenced before Superior Court Judge Joseph A. Paone sitting in New Brunswick on Sept. 8 to the prison term for knowingly leaving the scene of a motor vehicle accident resulting in the death of Michael Bergamasco, of Whippany, the prosecutor’s office said. The sentence was imposed after Flynn pleaded guilty on July 14 in accordance with a plea agreement reached with Mid-

dlesex County Assistant Prosecutor Keith Abrams. Flynn was charged following an investigation by Sgt. Robert Belluscio of the Metuchen Police Department, and Detective Jonathan Berman of the Middlesex County Prosecutor’s Office. The officers determined at approximately 9:01 a.m. on March 2 Flynn was driving a white Ford F250 pickup truck when he struck the 51-year-old utility worker in the crosswalk at the intersection of Middlesex Avenue and Grove Avenue. Flynn then fled the scene. Bergamasco was taken to Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital and later died from the injuries he sustained in the crash, the prosecutor’s office said.

information, including links to resources supporting their election participation. The site also highlights what the postal service views as the most critical information for voters who opt to vote through the U.S. Mail: that, in requesting or casting a mail-in ballot, they not only must comply with their local jurisdictions’ requirements, but also should start the process early. To allow sufficient time for voters to receive, complete and return ballots via the mail, the postal service strongly recommends that voters request ballots at the earliest point allowable, but no later than 15 days prior to the election date, according to the statement. The postal service also recommends that voters mail their ballots at least one week prior to their states’ due dates to allow for timely receipt by election officials. Voters should contact their local election officials for further information about deadlines and other requirements. In addition, the site provides resources to state and local election officials as part of the postal service’s ongoing efforts to partner with such officials to make the elections a success. The site guides election officials in contacting postal service personnel to discuss how they can design their mailings in a manner that comports with postal regulations, improves mail piece visibility

and ensures efficient processing as well as timely delivery, according to the statement. The site also provides links to information, such as the official 2020 Official Election Mail Kit (Kit 600) and the State and Local Election Officials User’s Guide (Publication 632), both of which were distributed to 11,500 election officials earlier this year. The U.S. Postal Service remains fully committed to fulfilling its role in the electoral process when policymakers choose to use our services in administering elections. The postal service can fully handle and deliver the anticipated increase in election mail volume and is continuing to coordinate with state and local election officials through November, according to the statement. Election officials and voters are being asked to be mindful of the postal service’s established delivery standards and consider how the mail actually works, so that voters have adequate time to request, receive, complete and send their mail-in ballots, according to the statement. The postal service will continue to do everything in its power to efficiently handle and deliver election mail, including ballots, in a manner consistent with the proven processes and procedures that have been relied upon for years, according to the statement. The postal service receives no tax dollars for operating expenses and relies on the sale of postage, products and services to fund its operations.

IMPROVEYOUR LAWN THIS FALL! We Can Help By Aerating & Overseeding!

Compacted soil and heavy thatch are the two biggest obstacles to a beautiful lawn. They tend to suffocate grass plants by preventing air, water, and nutrients from reaching the root zone. This means your lawn looks less than satisfactory in spite of adequate fertilization, water, and tender loving care! Aeration opens up the thatch and helps relieve compaction. It should be a regular part of your annual lawn maintenance program. Aeration is accomplished by the use of a machine equipped with cylinder-like spoons designed to penetrate and shatter the soil. Half inch diameter plugs of thatch and soil are actually pulled from the ground during this process. The plunging action of the spoons into the ground opens up the soil-allowing the grass plants to breathe and promoting deeper, healthier roots.

Major benefits of aeration...

• Increases air, water, and nutrient movement to the root zone • Intensifies decomposition of thatch • Helps relieve soil compaction • Stimulates new growth • Improves drainage • Provides a better environment for overseeding • Increases the effectiveness of applied fertifizers & control products • Incorporates organic matter into the soil • Increases tolerance to heat and cold

ON THE ROAD PETER PERROTTA

2020 Chrysler Pacifica Hybrid

I

f it walks like a duck and quacks like a duck … guess what? It’s a duck. Why try to disguise it? When I see those television commercials for minivans that try and make it seem cool for the average soccer mom or dad to be driving a minivan, I just shake my head. In recent years the minvan has fallen out of favor. So, the marketers now want to try and make it something it’s not. Why try and pretend? It’s a minivan, aka a duck. “Sell the sizzle”. That’s what an old car sales manager used to tell me. What that meant Peter Perrotta to me was: don’t sell something for what it’s not. Sell the sizzle of what it is. So after one recent week behind the wheel of the 2020 Chrysler Pacifica Hybrid Limited minivan, I must admit, there is a lot of sizzle to sell here folks. Before we get started, though, if you are looking for the wind-in-your-face driving experience of an athletic BMW or Mercedes, this is not where you look. Instead, what you get in the 2020 Chrysler Pacifica is a good, solid, all around, utilitarian vehicle that can be used for a multitude of transport and cargo tasks without breaking a sweat. Moreover, if you are approaching 65 years of age – like me – it’s a very comfortable vehicle to get into and out of without bending or twisting your back. Once you sit down inside it’s tremendously comfortable. If you are the designated driver to transport your sister-in-law, and mother-in-law and father-in-law to your son’s birthday dinner, it passes the test with flying colors. On the other hand, is this mini-van going to turn heads when you drive down the street? Absolutely not. Is it going to afford you that exhilarating driving experience of

the BMW 5 series? No way. But, let’s face it folks, it’s not fair to criticize the minivan for what it isn’t. We must appraise it for what it is. The 2020 Chrysler Pacifica Hybrid Limited – the model I drove for one week – is the only minivan currently on the market that is offered as a hybrid version. To make it even better, this model from Chrysler is a plug-in hybrid that can be operated as an electric-only model, with a full range of 30 miles on the electric only ride. More impressively, when you use it as a combined electric/gas option (the vehicle switches itself back and forth on an asneeded basis) it gets a whopping 82 miles per gallon. When in use as a gas-only vehicle, it gets a still solid 30 miles per gallon. For me, it’s hard to believe that none of the other minivan manufacturers (especially Honda and Toyota) don’t offer a hybrid version of their minivans. I’m not sure why that is. It may be due to the fact that the minivan segment of the car selling market has shrunk drastically from what it once was about 20 years ago. My first job in the car selling business was at a popular Honda dealership in South Jersey back in 2003. At that time, we had a waiting list for people who wanted to buy the popular Honda Odyssey minivan of about six months. Moreover, we sold every one of those Odysseys at full sticker price, with no discount. Such is not the case these days, obviously as the once-popular minivan has fallen out of fashion favor for the much sexier and aggressive looking SUV and crossover models now available on the market. Nonetheless, the minivan has survived. And, this one from Chrysler has won many accolades from the automotive press for being top-of-the-line in its class. In its review of the 2020 Pacifica, the editors at Car and Driver magazine simply stated that it is “the best minivan you can buy – and better than most SUVs too. “We like the minivan so much, in fact, that we have named it to our 10 best Trucks and SUVs list multiple times,” write the editors of Car and Driver. Personally, I’m not so sure that I am

2020 Chrysler Pacifica Hybrid

enamored as much as they are with the Pacifica. When I first took the wheel behind this Pacifica it instantly brought back memories to when my youngest son was 2 years old and my wife and I carted his whole world around with us in our Dodge Caravan minivan. At that time, my parents were still alive and living in Florida, so the minivan did the job it was designed to do on that several trips a year we made to St. Augustine. This time around, while it took me a day or two to get used to driving a minivan again, I must admit that by the end of the week I was quite impressed with the Pacifica. It’s luxurious, comfortable, practical and very useful. It’s just not all that exciting to drive. The Velvet Red Pearl colored Pacifica Hybrid I tested for the week carries a base price of $45,845. My tester was added the extra options of: $795 for the S appearance package; $995 for the advanced safety technology group and $1,895 for the tripanel panoramic moon roof. When you add in the $1,495 for destination and delivery charges, the bottom line sticker price on this tester comes in at

$51,025. The EPA estimates that the average annual fuel cost of operating this hybrid comes in at a miserly $1,050 per year. Most people spend more than that a year buying coffee at Wawa. This vehicle has not been rated by the government for the crash safety test yet. However, this Pacifica Hybrid does receive a very impressive 10 out of 10 rating for the government’s fuel economy and greenhouse gas rating – which most people hardly pay attention to. The interior of the Pacifica is well appointed. Chrysler’s Uconnect infotainment system works well, for the most part. I had some trouble with it getting to understand my voice commands, but that was the only glitch. Overall, this Pacific, especially the hybrid version, is well worth considering if you are in the market for such a vehicle.

experience the comforts of home in the lab and facilitate a smooth post-procedure recovery, which helps to improve patient satisfaction with the care,” Rivera said in the statement. Advanced nurse practitioners provide direct patient care in the catheterization lab, support the cardiologists to ensure appropriate patient education, and transition patients from the cardiac catheterization lab back to the care of their cardiologists in the doctors’ offices. “Nurses are an integral part of the treatment team, and advanced nurse practitioners serve to make sure all of the patients’ clinical needs are being met as they move through the treatment phase to recovery and transition back home and to their referring doctor. This happens quickly so it’s very important that a nurse with advanced training is guiding the process,” Jim Lindquist, chief nursing officer, JFK Medical Center, said in the statement. The JFK Medical Center Cardiovascular Center prides itself on maintaining strong lines of communication with its patients’ primary care physicians and community-based specialists, according to the statement.
