Woodbridge remembers residents who passed away during pandemic, celebrates frontline heroes By KATHY CHANG Staff Writer

amily and friends – some wearing T-shirts, clutching photos, and holding signs – stood as their loved one’s name was read. They were fathers, mothers, grandparents, uncles, aunts, the list goes on and on. Woodbridge officials held a 90-minute solemn ceremony to honor the memories of residents who have passed away in the last six months to COVID-19 and/or other complications without proper wakes, funerals or burials at the concert field behind Woodbridge High School on Sept. 20. Following the ceremony, township officials honored township department, police, fire, first aid employees and volunteers and health care workers who risked their lives during the pandemic. Rev. Neva Lawson, pastor at First Baptist Church of Woodbridge in Sewaren, provided reflection and a prayer service. He said as a pastor he has had to officiate funerals with only 10 people. He said with many family members in lockdown because of the novel coronavirus pandemic,

they could not attend. “More than a week ago, I had to go out of state and officiate a funeral for my own aunt,” he said. “Upon seeing some of my cousins and having a chance to see some of their children I could not embrace them. We couldn’t go out and eat at our favorite buffet. This tiny organism, this virus, smaller than your typical bacteria turned this world upside down. The tiny organism has deprived people of rituals that allow us to process pain, this tiny organism has caused hospitalizations without family visitation, patients separated from familiar voices, burials without funerals, grief without hugs, sorrow without comfort.” Lawson said he prays there will be a new consciousness that begins to develop for everyone. “We will remember that the best things in life are free … it’s still important that we pursue life, liberty and pursuit of happiness,” he said. Rev. Bob Louer, pastor of the First Presbyterian Church of Avenel, urged family members and friends to honor and (Continued on page 8)

Borough Council takes stance on goal to provide a complete sidewalk network in Metuchen By KATHY CHANG Staff Writer

n 2013, the Metuchen Borough Council adopted a Complete Streets policy designed and operated to enable safe access for all users – pedestrians, bicyclists, motorists and public transportation – to safely move along borough streets. “Offering a developer an option to make a [payment in lieu of sidewalk] instead of building a sidewalk … it’s simply incom-

patible with the Complete Streets policy and incompatible with the borough’s goal of a complete sidewalk network,” Councilman Jason Delia said. The Borough Council voted in favor of amending an ordinance on development and design standards for public sidewalks at a meeting on Sept. 14. Delia, Council President Linda Koskoski, Councilwoman Sheri-Rose Rubin, and Councilwoman Dorothy Rasmussen voted “yes” for the

amended ordinance while Councilman Daniel Hirsch voted “no.” Councilman Todd Pagel was not present at the meeting. Koskoski said the impetus of amending the ordinance came to the forefront over the last few months after several large residential development projects came before the Planning Board. “At the last minute the developer’s requested payment in lieu of sidewalks was granted,” she said. “We lost major opportu-

nities during these projects to increase the borough’s sidewalk network.” Delia noted the borough has missed out on 1,000 feet of sidewalk due to the payment in lieu of sidewalk program. Koskoski said increasing the borough’s sidewalk networks has been a very important mission of the council to increase walkability of the community and access for people who have accessibility issues.

JFK Hartwyck long-term care facility facilitates wedding for two residents

R

ose Angela Filippi and Paul Reuther, who live at Hackensack Meridian JFK Hartwyck at Edison Estates, never imagined that they would start a romance at the long-term care facility in Edison, fall in love and get married, and certainly not during a global pandemic. But on Sept. 18, the couple wed at a small ceremony officiated by Edison Mayor Thomas Lankey, who is also senior vice president at Hackensack Meridian JFK Medical Center. The couple originally planned to wed in June this year but their plans were delayed because of COVID-19. “When I first saw Paul at the Friendship Club at Hartwyck in October 2019, I thought he looked grumpy. I said to myself, ‘What’s wrong with that man?’ ” said Filippi, age 70, who prefers to be called Angie. “But one of the recreation therapists told me, ‘No, he’s not that way,” and then, over time, I got to know him better, and I found out that he’s warm, giving and loving,” she said of her new husband, who is 68. “He really cares about people.” Reuther said they started out as friends, but as he got to appreciate her warmth and sense of humor, things began to percolate quickly. “We started to message back and forth on our computers from our separate rooms after evening card or bingo games,” Filippi said. “Over time, things got serious. One evening I asked Paul over messenger if something was brewing. He said, ‘Yes, and it’s not coffee,’ ” she recalled with a chuckle. Now, the couple share a room at the extended-stay nursing care facility which offers care to seniors with varying levels

Rose Angela Filippi and Paul Reuther were recently married at Hackensack Meridian JFK Hartwyck at Edison Estates, the long-term care facility where they currently live.

of disabilities. Filippi turned to JFK Hartwyck at Edison Estates for care following a fall two years ago at her home in Edison, which resulted in a complicated broken shoulder bone and a lengthy recuperation. In 2011, Reuther, a widower, began riding a motorcycle, and a crash with a truck resulted in him sustaining compound leg fractures, which required surgery and many months of rehabilitation.

“We came to realize that we have so much in common,” Reuther said. “Angie is Italian and I love Italian food. My background is German and Irish, and she likes German food. We also realized we did the same fun things in our past and we like the same music. We were always in synch and we just like being together.” The couple also share a belief in hard work and both built impressive careers. Filippi, originally from Brooklyn, New

York, worked for more than 42 years in various customer service and finance positions at Con Edison, Goldman Sachs, Multiplan Insurance and other companies. Reuther, who grew up in Warren Township, worked hard for many years as a machine operator in numerous plants. “One of my friends here at JFK Hartwyck tipped me off that Paul was falling for me,” Filippi said modestly. “She said, ‘He just lights up when you enter the room,’ and then I realized she was right, and that I felt the same way.” On their wedding day, held with just a handful of guests, the bride wore a mint green dress and a tiara, and the green in the groom’s gray and green striped tie matched her outfit to a T. “We are so happy to have met and to be together now at this time in our lives,” Reuther said. Filippi commented that the clinical, social work and recreation team at JFK Hartwyck at Edison Estates fully supported their building a relationship and helped them on the path to their engagement, wedding and sharing a room. “We are just delighted to see two of our residents fall in love and get married,” said Roger P. Rossi, D.O., JFK Johnson Rehabilitation Institute. “Social isolation among older people is an enormous social problem that affects health and well-being, and while people sometimes connect and disconnect in long-term care, it’s fairly uncommon to see a relationship evolve and lead to marriage.” • This article was submitted by Hackensack Meridian Health

to assist them with the costs of reopening in safe, timely, and effective ways,” Isaac Kremer, MDA executive director, said in a statement prepared by Punchline Publicity. “What we put in place years ago has set us up for the positive outcomes we’re seeing today,” Kremer said. The MDA’s five-year Strategic Plan was adopted in August 2017 after an intensive year of business and consumer surveys, SWOT (Strengths, Weaknesses, Opportunities and Threats) examinations, and retail market analyses. With a concrete plan to transform the Metuchen downtown into a more familyfriendly and innovative place, the MDA has been creating incremental yet sustainable change via downtown events and experiences, the promotion and storefront restoration of Metuchen’s variety of retail shops, restaurants, and service businesses, increased engagement with community stakeholders, and significant improvements to streetscapes, according to the statement. The strategy, which has attracted more than 50 unique and entrepreneurial small businesses to Metuchen’s historic downtown since its implementation, has allowed

Members of the American Legion T. Nulty Post No. 471 and the North Jersey Young Marines – Colonia High School Detachment presented the colors at the ceremony. Mayor John E. McCormac and members of the Township Council read the names and biographies of the number of residents who passed away. Some of the residents who passed away included Richard T. Gould, 81, of Woodbridge, who passed away on March 29. He was a member of the Woodbridge Fire Company No. 1 for 48 years. John C. Careccia, 74, of Fords, was serving as chief of the Woodbridge Township Ambulance and Rescue Squad when he passed away on April 17. Former Woodbridge Mayor Joseph DeMarino, of Port Reading, passed away at the age of 85 on May 31. Oritt and Aida Everett of Iselin passed away at the age of 92. Oritt passed on April 9 and his wife Aida passed on April 20. There was only a total of 18 days when one was alive and not the other. The Woodbridge High School Choir, led by Lisa Romero, performed musical numbers including “We Shall Overcome” and “Amazing Grace.” Paul DeLeo, the township bagpiper, performed “Amazing Grace” with the choir along with “Taps” and “Bells of Dunblane” during the ceremony. Paycheck Protection Program, and more, while providing COVID-19 business resources online, including small business grants, low interest loans, and important legislative updates. It also created the Metuchen Downtown Reopening Grant program for when business restrictions were lifted. “The Metuchen Downtown Reopening Grant program was in many ways the MDA at its best, doing something no other organization was capable of – providing needed funding to local businesses struggling to survive and reopen,” Jay Muldoon, MDA board member, said in the statement. For Isolation Fitness, the grant allowed owner Kyle Little to pay rent and utility bills, Little said. For What’s the Scoop, a homemade ice cream shop, it meant the purchase of a new freezer, owners Michael and Michelle Schutz said. And for Title Boxing Club, it meant the purchase of audio equipment for outdoor fitness classes, owner Joe Walsh said. “Their support and frequent communication will never be forgotten by our team,” Walsh said in the statement. The remaining businesses used the grants to improve signage, expand online marketing and sales capabilities, invest in personal protective equipment and sanitizers, and purchase equipment necessary to provide outdoor dining. Furthermore, for new businesses such as Papillon & Co., a housewares and accessories shop, and Biggby Coffee, a nationwide chain, as well as soon-to-open establishments such as Menya Ramen House, the support provided by MDA has all but confirmed their choice to open in Metuchen. “With the help of Metuchen Downtown Alliance, we were able to weather significant difficulties that came with opening our restaurant,” Ryan Park, owner of Menya Ramen House, said in the statement. “From introducing us to key local business owners and residents to providing critical insights on navigating our anticipated

opening, we could not have come this far without their help. “Best of all, I am confident MDA will continually share its thoughts and experiences to make Menya a meaningful part of Downtown Metuchen for the long haul.”

“[Building sidewalks is] not just for the able-bodied to get around, but it’s a lifeline for people who have issues surrounding accessibility whether they use walkers or a wheelchair … it matters in that we have sidewalks,” she said. The current ordinance calls for developers to pay a 75% payment for the cost of a sidewalk. The amended ordinance calls for developers to go through an application process for a payment in lieu of sidewalks and pay a 150% payment for the cost of a sidewalk. “If the applicant really needs a payment in lieu of sidewalks, they would have to be willing to pay for it,” Koskoski said. The amended ordinance also calls for developers to execute an easement if they need to build sidewalks around trees. Mayor Jonathan Busch said the amended ordinance emphasizes the borough can find balance – preserve the trees and provide accessibility through sidewalks in the borough. Hirsch said he agreed something needs to be done, however, said he was not in favor of how it was being done. He agreed the current 75% payment of the cost of sidewalk was not enough, but said he found 150% to be punitive to the developer. He suggested a 100% payment in lieu of the sidewalk. He said he also took issue with the execution of an easement, which would be hard to make changes in the future when a tree dies. Koskoski said nothing will be a perfect situation. She said they discussed at length the amendments for the payment in lieu of sidewalks and an easement. Items for Business Briefs may be emailed to news@emsentinel.com.
