hree candidates will vie for the two, three-year terms available on the Metuchen Borough Council during the election in November. Incumbent Councilman Daniel Hirsch and newcomer Tyler Kandel, both Democrats, will face Stephen Kitsko, a Republican.

The general election is Nov. 3. Dan Hirsch, 54, who has lived in Metuchen for 27 years, is seeking a second elected term on council. He was appointed to the council in January 2019 and ran successfully for the one-year unexpired term in November 2019. He and his wife Debra have two adult daughters. He earned a bachelor’s degree in electrical engineering from The Cooper Union and an MBA from Columbia Business School in Finance, Management and Marketing. In the community, Benderly has served as a Metuchen baseball/softball manager, coach for 16 years, participated in Metuchen Travel Soccer and the Metuchen Municipal Pool Swim Team, and served as a Spring Extravaganza presenter for 11 years. This genteel lady never complained. She was never angry with me or our children, but only with herself. I believe she was aware of her erratic behavior, but was unable to say what was wrong. We selected a living care center that would tend to Vinnie’s specific needs. My precious wife has long since forgotten my name, but knew who I was. Sometimes she had moments of clarity and would greet me with open arms and say “I love you.” Other times she would state clearly, “I have something to tell you,” but again couldn’t tell me what it was. Otherwise she spoke gibberish. It is heartbreaking when she cries and holds onto me when I must leave for my bus. I can’t sleep in my own bed without her in it. I get up nightly to sit in her favorite chair and read her poetry or speak to her portraits. Yes, and sometimes I cry. Perhaps the thing I miss most is sharing our memories together. When I lost my birth family, I missed sharing our memories with them. When I told this to Vinnie before her illness, she said, “That’s alright, we’ll make new memories together.” We did indeed over our 69 years together, but now I am alone to re-live them. No man has loved a woman more than I love my wife, not Romeo for Juliet, not Marc Antony for Cleopatra, nobody. I recently collaborated with Elizabeth Browning to tell Vinnie how much I love her. She can no longer read so I read this to her on her last birthday: “How do I love you? Let me count the ways. I love you to the depth and breadth and height my soul can reach. I love you to the level of every day’s heartache when I must leave you. I love you freely, in sickness and in health, as I vowed to you when we were wed. I love you purely, from your 19th birthday to this special day, your 91st birthday. I love you with the breadth,

smiles and tears of all of my life, and if God so chooses, I shall love you even more when he calls us home.” I don’t know when we will lose her for the second and final time so I am spending as much time with her as I can. I don’t know what I will do when she passes. I can’t live very long without her. I can’t live without my soul. When I told this to my doctor at the Veterans Administration, she put me on suicide watch and gave me depression medication. I told her that wasn’t necessary for my religion prohibits such behavior. I also have the children I love and I’ll probably die of a broken heart anyway. I already suffer from PTSD, thanks to the Japanese suicide planes attacking our ships in Admiral Halsey’s Third Fleet. I also suffer from asbestosis from my time on two battleships and a cruiser as a Petty Officer-Radarman in World War II. But I am resilient and almost immune to pain after seeing my shipmates die, after the mysterious death of my 42-year-old (Continued on page 10)

We are in a crisis mode with this disease. We must find a cure for our parents, sons and daughters.

Saquon’s season cut short by ACL tear

S

aquon Barkley suffered a devastating season ending injury that is unfortunately all too common in sports. We wish him a speedy recovery. One of the most common knee injuries is a sprain or tear of the anterior cruciate ligament (ACL). The ACL is one of the four major ligaments of the knee and it helps provide knee stability during activities. Athletes who play sports involving cutting, pivoting, jumping, and sudden stops are at higher risk of ACL injuries. These include sports such as football,

basketball, soccer, lacrosse, volleyball, gymnastics and downhill skiing. Several studies have shown that female athletes are also at higher risk of ACL injuries compared to male athletes. Many people experience their knee buckle and may hear or feel a “pop” in the knee when an ACL rupture occurs. Knee swelling within the first few hours after the injury is also common. If you have a knee injury, it is important to have a thorough evaluation by a doctor of physical therapy. About 50% of

ACL injuries occur in combination with damage to another knee structure, such as the meniscus, other ligaments, or articular cartilage. Your doctor of physical therapy can help determine possible injured structures and recommended course of care. Referral to an orthopedist for further assessment and possible imaging, in conjunction with physical therapy, may be recommended. Treatment for an ACL injury may include surgical or non-surgical options, depending on the extent of the injury, your

activity level, and the amount of instability during these activities. Physical therapy is a crucial part of rehabilitation for both surgical and non-surgical treatment. Regardless of whether or not you need surgery we recommend that you choose

has been provided to 1,050 team members to help cover costs such as groceries, mortgage payments, utility bills and funeral expenses. In addition to donations from community members, the program received a significant boost of $1.2 million in funding thanks to contributions from 100 percent of Hackensack Meridian Health senior leadership, according to the statement. “Our team members come to work to care for our community,” Robert C. Garrett, CEO of Hackensack Meridian Health, said in a prepared statement. “Sometimes, behind their smiles are worries about their own family’s physical and financial health, and this was never truer than during the height of the COVID-19 pandemic. Partners lost work, households took in older generations, childcare costs increased due to school closures, family members became ill or passed away and the financial burden hit home. We recognized the incredible strain that put on the team, adding to the stress they were already under, which is why it was so important for us to care for their financial health. I am incredibly grateful to the selfless leaders at Hackensack Meridian Health who gave of themselves to help their fellow Hackensack Meridian Health family members. It is truly representative of the generous and caring nature of our organization.” The program is built on three guiding principles: complete confidentiality; expediency – reviewing applications within five days; and compassionate equity with decisions based upon outlined criteria and with compassion. “At Hackensack Meridian Health, we believe that humanizing health care includes supporting our care team so that they are prepared to provide exceptional care and compassion to our patients and

It’s important to note that research suggests that certain neuromuscular and proprioceptive training programs can help prevent ACL and lower extremity injuries in athletes for certain sports. A doctor of physical therapy can help implement these exercises into a team’s warm up to help prevent injuries. An individual athlete can also be assessed for musculoskeletal risk factors that can be addressed to decrease risk of injury. aria Wise is a highly qualified resident of our municipality who is running for a seat on the Edison Board of Education. Maria began her education as a first grader at John Marshall Elementary School and continued until graduation from Edison High School. Two of her children have completed their tenure in our school system and one is currently a student at Thomas Jefferson Middle School. Maria’s roots run deep in our township. Over the years she has been an active member of the community by volunteering as a religion instructor at St. Matthew the Apostle Church, a cheering coach for the Edison Jets, a member of Edison Overcrowding Task Force, a petitioner opposing Suez Water in the attempted privatization of Edison’s water system, a two-term committee woman in District 31, and more importantly, Maria has served as an advocate for those subjected to domestic violence by speaking at and for R.A.W. (Respecting All Women).

Maria’s guiding principles, Honesty, Integrity and Transparency, are words she lives by and are deeply ingrained in her. As a member of the Edison School Board, Maria brings a mastery of financial acumen with the understanding of the many needs of our students. As the mother of a child with special needs, she brings the ability to understand the many facets of blending coping skills and integrating those skills with everyday life. Maria Wise has “walked in our shoes.” She is a tireless advocate for our children while understanding the very real need for financial responsibility. Maria is what Edison needs. “Nothing Less than Excellence” in education is the hallmark of Edison Township and Maria Wise will continue to fulfill that mission. For these many reasons I support the candidacy of Maria Wise to be seated as a member of the Edison Township School Board. Will the government fund enough money for researchers to finally discover some medicines and treatments that actually work? We are in a crisis mode with this disease. We must find a cure for our parents, sons and daughters. Let us call our representatives and senators to learn what they are doing about this crisis. Let us tell our stories, shout out the urgent need for funding and focused research to provide meaningful options. And let’s not forget the caregivers suffering with their patients, providing the thankless work, sweat and tears to give their patients meaningful lives.

years. He is a member of the board of directors for Congregation Neve Shalom, and was later elected to the executive committee at Neve Shalom acting as recording secretary, vice president and president. “One of my main goals as president was to get the synagogue more involved in the local community, which has been borne out in many ways,” he said. Hirsch has also served as a member of the borough’s Planning Board, the Technical Review Committee, the Environmental Commission and the Parking Authority. He participated in the design phase of the Woodmont Project, particularly around the Metuchen Plaza. “I am running for a seat on the council because I possess good judgment and feel that service to my community is important,” he said. “As an attorney, a businessman, and proven leader in the community, I possess the knowledge, experience and skills to help my town be the best town that it can be. I have a clear understanding that anything I do in my position as councilperson is not about me and my desires, but must be what’s best for Metuchen. I also understand that there are limited resources and that interests must often be balanced against each other.” As the liaison to the borough fire department and Emergency Medical Services (EMS), Hirsch said the most pressing need in Metuchen for the next few years is creating a plan to build an affordable, but effective, home for the fire and EMS services. “The safety of our neighbors is the highest priority a councilperson can have,” he said. “It’s why we reduced our speed limit on major roads. Likewise, the need to make the new home attractive to volunteers and meet their technical needs is so very important. I look forward to continuing to

work with [Fire] Chief [Robert] Donnan, with [EMS President] Peter Fairclough and the council to make this happen.” Tyler J. Kandel, 51, who has lived in Metuchen for 19 years, is seeking his first term. He and his wife Stephanie have two daughters. He earned his bachelor’s degree in political science from The State University of New York at Binghamton and earned his law degree from the New York Law School. He is employed as an attorney who specializes in commercial litigation and employment litigation. He is a partner in the law firm of Sills, Cummis & Gross, PC. In the community, Kandel has served as head coach or assistant coach on various sports teams his daughters have played on over the past decade. He has also served as commissioner of several T-ball and softball divisions of the Metuchen Baseball and Softball League. In 2010, Kandel served on the Mayor’s Commission to study full-day kindergarten. In 2014, he founded the Metuchen Daddy-Daughter group, which annually charters buses for a day of snow tubing and river rafting for up to 200 fathers and their daughters. He has raised thousands of dollars each year to local charities and he has also been an annual volunteer at the Metuchen Cookie Walk, a local event, which contributes thousands of dollars to the Fuccile Foundation. Since 2016, he has served as a member on the borough’s Zoning Board of Adjustment. “I decided to run this year as I watched the impact that the COVID-19 crisis has had on our community and local economy,” he said. “I am eager to devote my efforts and abilities to help support Metuchen throughout the pandemic and rebuild after the crisis has subsided. Although I was not born and raised in Metuchen, having spent

methodologies, social emotional learning and adopting a collaborative approach. Benderly said he will continue to ensure students get a high quality general, math and science education, advocate for programs to develop every child to their fullest potential, drive innovation for the benefit of all of our children, encourage appropriate differentiation at all levels, leverage available data and analysis tools to meaningfully measure performance, promote collaboration with teachers and parents and exercise fiscal responsibility. Brian D. Glassberg, 46, is a lifelong resident in the borough except for time away at college and a short time in Edison. He and his wife have one daughter, age 7.

the last two decades in our beautiful borough, it is our home. I believe I can be a strong voice aimed towards Metuchen continuing to be an amazing place in which to live and raise a family.” If elected, Kandel said he will focus on the COVID-19 crisis and the resulting revenue shortfalls, which are the predominant issues facing Metuchen’s residents and local businesses. “As the council and the mayor [Jonathan Busch] have done so well so far, we need to listen to and support our local business owners and be as flexible as possible as circumstances change,” he said. “In addition, I will be involved with the development of the Arts District, since, as a musician, it is a cause close to my heart, and which I know will contribute significant value to our community.” Stephen Kitsko, 64, who has lived in Metuchen for 26 years, is seeking his first term. He and his wife Jill have two adult sons. He earned his bachelor’s degree in business administration from Drexel University and an MBA in finance from Temple University. He is employed as a technical business analyst. In the community, Kitsko has been the pack master for the Cub Scout pack sponsored by the First Presbyterian Church. He served on the Metuchen Municipal Alliance He is employed as a school counseling supervisor in Edison. In the community, Glassberg said he devotes his time to bettering the public schools as a school board Hazel-Anne M. member. Some Johnson-Marcus of his accomplishments in the role include helping pass the mental health initiative; advocating for changes to equity policies; advocating for a single-platform Google Classroom system; improving transparency by social media sharing; adding a public comment opportunity by rewriting

for eight years, where he served as treasurer for six years. He simultaneously served as the treasurer of the Metuchen Police Department’s D.A.R.E. (Drug Abuse Resistance Education) program. He also created the Metuchen Music Enrichment Stephen Kitsko and Development Organization, a taxexempt registered charity for the Metuchen High School Band Parents. “I am running for [council] because I believe I can add some diversity of thought on the council,” he said. “Less than half of registered voters in Metuchen are declared Democrats, but 100 [percent] of the council seats are held by Democrats. They are all good people with good intentions, but they vote as if their way is the only way. There is no independent voice. There is rarely a differing opinion offered that highlight the views or concerns of the majority of voters who are not Democrats. That attitude must change if this borough is to survive, grow and prosper.” If elected, Kitsko said there must be focus on getting the borough’s spending priorities in order. “That means developing a long-term capital budget where we identify infrastructure needs on the distant horizon and put plans in place to prepare for them,” he said. “We also need to rein in our operating budget. For years, Metuchen was fiscally responsible. In large part, it still is. But note in the past 10 years the town’s budget has increased 50 [percent], from roughly $16 million in 2014 to $24 million in 2020. We have to find a way to hold the line so that Metuchen remains affordable for young families and senior citizens.”

policy; championing smart growth, including full-day kindergarten; highlighting the achievement gap and pushing for improvements; recommending recyclable food trays, replacing Styrofoam; sharing insights based on professional curriculum experience; leading changes to grade point averages, GPA, calculations; assisting with the selection of a new website; asking for more Student Advisory Board feedback; collaborating with the District Policy Committee to ensure that policies meshed with practices in the schools; and changing policy to encourage additional revenue streams. Glassberg is completing his third year on the board. “We are in the middle of the most challenging time for education in at least a (Continued on page 14)

generation, he said. “I am in my 25th year as an educator and I believe I can use my expertise to help the district I so personally care about. I helped pass the mental health initiative, which has already directly benefited students and families. Metuchen can trust me to make decisions in the best interest of our students based on my experience as a teacher, school counselor and supervisor. I believe we can do more than just get through this moment; we can thrive. We can begin to transform our education and our infrastructure to better serve students of all abilities. If re-elected, Glassberg said he would like to focus on equity. “An equitable education starts with

full-day kindergarten, he said. “It should be implemented in conjunction with upgrading facilities to modern standards that includes space for small group instruction and counseling services as well as air-conditioning. Although we are a highachieving district, many students of color fall behind. When school is remote, there should be in-person learning opportunities for struggling learners. Curriculum work is already underway that diversifies the content and authors presented to our students. Along with my running mate, Dr. HazelAnne Johnson-Marcus, we are working to ensure that we have a district staff that is reflective of the diversity of our borough and the State of New Jersey and that is well trained to create inclusive schools. Hazel-Anne M. Johnson-Marcus, 41, has lived in the borough for 12 years. She is married with two daughters, ages 6 and 4.

She earned her bachelor’s degree in psychology and business administration from the University of Florida and a master’s degree and doctorate degree in industrialorganizational psychology with minors in methods and business administration from the University of South Florida. She is employed as a director and associate teaching professor at Rutgers University Undergraduate Program in Human Resource Management. In the community, Johnson-Marcus was appointed a member of Metuchen Mayor Jonathan Busch’s Equity Commission in July, she has served as the co-chair of the Metuchen Human Relations Commission since January 2019 and previously served as vice-chair when the commission was reconstituted in late 2017. In addition, she has been a Metuchen Democratic Committeeperson since 2017. Johnson-Marcus also

Johnson-Marcus, who is seeking her first elected seat, filled the vacancy seat of former Board Member Benjamin Small on Aug. 25. “The ongoing COVID-19 pandemic and our national reckoning on racial justice make this an incredibly challenging time for education, she said. “My years of experience as a university professor, a diversity and inclusion educator, program director and an Industrial-Organizational psychologist provide me with the expertise to help our district meet the challenges of this moment. Indeed, I believe that our district can respond to this difficult set of challenges in a transformational way that allows for us to ensure equitable, inclusive schools where all students feel a sense of belonging. If elected, Johnson-Marcus said she would like to focus on equity. “We need to focus on reducing the disparity in learning outcomes and creating an equitable education system that meets the needs of all students in our Metuchen schools, she said. “Along with my running mate, Mr. Brian Glassberg, we are working to ensure that we have a district staff that is reflective of the diversity of our borough and the State of New Jersey, and that is well trained to ensure inclusive schools. Novenas PRAYER IS POWERFUL Oh, most beautiful flower of Mount Carmel, fruitful vine of splendor of Heaven, Blessed Mother of the son of God, Immaculate Virgin, assist me in my necessity. Oh, Star of the Sea, help me and show me herein you are my Mother. Oh, Holy Mary Mother of God, Queen of Heaven and Earth! I humbly beseech you from the bottom of my heart to succor me in this petition. There are none that can withstand your power. Oh, show me herein you are my Mother. Oh Mary conceived without sin pray for us who have recourse in thee (3Xs). Holy Mother, I place this cause in your hands (3Xs). Holy Spirit, you who solve all problems, light all roads so I can attain my goal. You who gave me the divine gift to forgive and forget all evil against me and that in all instances in my life you are with me, I want in this short prayer to thank you for all things as you confirm once again that I never want to be separated from you in eternal glory. Thank you for your mercy towards me and mine. + Say this prayer 3 consecutive days and publish prayer after petition is granted. Do not despair. Additional advice and petition. Pray the Rosary regularly. F.A.M.

PRAYER TO ST. JUDE Oh Holy St. Jude, Apostle and Martyr, great in virtue and rich in miracles, near Kinsman of Jesus Christ, faithful intercessor of all who invoke your special patronage in time of need, to you I have recourse from the depth of my heart and humbly beg to whom God has given such great power to come to my assistance. Help me in my present and urgent petition. In return, I promise to make your name known and cause you to be invoked. Say three Our Fathers, three Hail Marys and Glorias. Publication must be promised. St. Jude pray for us all who invoke your aid. Amen. This Novena has never been known to fail. This Novena must be said for 9 consecutive days. Thanks.
