he love for Evelyn Kiss, a long-time cafeteria worker at John P. (JP) Stevens High School, was evident as she received a standing ovation and fanfare as she turned 100 years young. “I wish to thank everybody,” Kiss said at an Edison Board of Education (BOE) meeting on Oct. 15. “All the years I worked at JP, which is many, many years, it’s been the best years of my life. I love the students. I’ve always have loved them and that is why I enjoy working with them in school.” JP Stevens Principal Anthony Shallop said Kiss is an important member of the school. “Evelyn Kiss is woven in the fabric of JP Stevens,” he said. “She has worked at JP for over 55 years. She has been there since 1965 when the school opened and when [the school] had its very own food service. She continued at JP when Chartwells [Food Services] took over. She is amazing, she is inspiring and the children and staff at JP always look forward seeing Ms. Evelyn every day.” Shallop said as the saying goes “you never work a day in your life if you do what you love.” “I would argue that Evelyn has never worked a day in the 55 years that she has been at JP,” he said, adding Kiss is still em-
ployed at JP. “She’s a wonderful person because of the love she has for our children. Ms. Evelyn is an icon at JP and a wonderful role model for each and every one of us.” Earlier in the day, Shallop, with the help of the JP Stevens hawk mascot, Chartwells and members of the police, fire and emergency medical services in Fanwood, led a birthday parade in Kiss’s neighborhood where she lives with her granddaughter and her family. Kiss has lived in Fanwood for 50 years. She has four children, one granddaughter and two great grandchildren. Shallop read a proclamation from Fanwood Mayor Colleen Mahr, who declared Oct. 15, 2020, “Evelyn Kiss Day.” “She is a spitfire and loves to laugh and joke around and we know that at JP,” Shallop said as he read the proclamation. “Evelyn has a deep love of the New York Yankees, Disney World and Florida. Every day she wakes up and puts a full face of makeup and she is the best caregiver to her beloved dog Mandy. She also enjoys shopping at her favorite store Walmart.” At the end of the presentation, a video of members of the JP Stevens community wished Kiss a happy birthday. On behalf of the BOE, Board President Ralph Errico also presented Kiss flowers to celebrate her special day.

Colavita fires up pizza truck to thank first responders during pandemic
F
irst responders and town officials were treated to fresh, handmade pizza at Colavita headquarters in Edison on Oct. 21 as part of the Italian brand’s efforts to give back to the community it calls home. Police officers, firefighters, EMTs, Mayor Thomas Lankey, Police Chief Tom Bryan, Fire Chief Bryan Latham and several council members, among others, gathered outside Colavita’s offices at noon to pick up a few wood-fired slices at their pizza truck. Health Director Jay Elliott was onsite to ensure CDC compliance, while Colavita CEO Giovanni Colavita shared his gratitude for their guests’ dedication and selfless service to the community, according to information provided by Breaking Limits. “We’re thankful for those who show up every day to save lives and help those in need, and wanted to show our appreciation by hosting this thank you lunch,” Colavita said in the statement. “Many of our Colavita employees also live here in Edison, and we’ve worked closely with town officials to ensure the safety and wellbeing of our workforce. I feel it’s important, especially during these trying times, to stay connected with the community and show our support.” Colavita employs about 100 people at its Edison headquarters between its warehouse and corporate offices. Colavita has also seen an increased demand in product from their meal subscription kit partner, HelloFresh, as well as an uptick in sales from major e-commerce and retail partners like ShopRite and Amazon, according to the statemen. “Colavita is what Edison is all about: small businesses located here, trying to do everything right for the community,” Lankey said in the statement. “Edison is built on businesses like Colavita.” To cap off the event, Colavita announced a special surprise: all first re-

sponders in attendance would take home a product care package to enjoy with their families. The thank you lunch is part of Colavita’s larger charitable efforts, which include supporting struggling restaurant workers in New York City through Relief Opportunities for All Restaurants (ROAR NY), and donating more than 80,000 meals to the students and families of the Food and Finance High School during the pandemic through the Food Education Fund, according to the statement. Colavita also sponsors a scholarship competition awarding the winning students a scholarship and trip to Italy to learn about local culinary traditions and techniques. In 1938, in the quaint hilltop village of Sant’Elia a Pianisi, located in the Molise region of Italy, a small family business was born. Today, the Colavita company is still family-owned and operating in the same town of their ancestors and their Italian food products, including olive oil, vinegar, pasta and tomatoes are distributed in more than 80 countries worldwide. Giovanni Colavita, the third generation of the Colavita family, is the CEO of Colavita USA which has offices in Edison and Dixon, California.

Most speed limits in Metuchen have been reduced to 25 miles per hour By KATHY CHANG Staff Writer
W
hat seemed like a pipe dream many years ago – reducing speed limits to 25 miles per hour borough-wide – has become 99% a reality. Signs are now erected for motorists to travel 25 miles per hour “through the heart of town” on state road Route 27 from Kentnor Street near the Metuchen First Aid Squad to Rector Street near St. Luke’s Episcopal Church. “The state did not approve 25 miles
per hour heading towards the outskirts of town [which have speed limits upwards of 40 miles per hour], but I still feel like that switch is big for us,” said Council President Linda Koskoski at a meeting on Oct. 19, who has championed townwide 25 miles per hour since she came onto the council. “As I’ve stated many, many times before, the speed limit is just one piece of the puzzle in trying to make our streets safer.” The state approved the reduction of the speed limit on Route 27 to 25 miles
per hour from Kentnor Street near the Metuchen First Aid Squad to Rector Street near St. Luke’s Episcopal Church. Borough officials had a meeting with state Sen. Patrick Diegnan’s (D-18) office on Feb. 25 and laid out information on why the speed limit on Route 27 should be lowered. A virtual meeting followed due to the coronavirus. Koskoski, who had said she didn’t expect much due to the long process it took to get the speed limits reduced on the county roads, said a lot of the information was

from their research for making their case to lower speed limits on county roads. Busch said the circumstances that fell in place show the function of government works and things can actually happen with a phone call, email or chance encounter. The Borough Council approved an ordinance to reduce the speed limits on the entire lengths of all county roads, Amboy Avenue, Central Ave, Main Street, Middlesex Avenue, New Durham Road, Plainfield Avenue, Plainfield Road and Woodbridge Avenue in November 2019. The Middlesex County Board of Chosen Freeholders followed approving the measure through a resolution. The speed limit changes on the county roads took effect on Feb. 14. Borough officials said collaborative efforts among county, borough officials and grassroots groups led the borough to become “almost” 25 miles per hour boroughwide. The borough has 52 miles of roadway.

Please check the status of any event before attending. The Metuchen Arts Council has created the Metuchen Arts Exchange (MAX), an expansion of the council’s community outreach, offering virtual classes in theater, dance and thematic art through Nov. 24. The youth theater classes are taught by performing arts instructor and Metuchen native Lisa Hyman. Offered for ages 3-5, Little Actors uses games, storytelling, singing and movement to expand imagination, build confidence and develop performance skills. Offered for ages 7-11 and ages 12 and up, Comedy for Acting classes use improv and script work to tweak acting techniques. Movenglish asks participants to contribute to creating a brand-new language through movement. Classes are geared for ages 14 and up and no dance experience is required. The class is taught by Charly Santagado, artistic director of The Mignolo Dance Company. The intersection of science and art is explored in the class, Scientific Explanations in Art, for grades 6-8. The instructor is artist and educator Joe Castronova. Watercolor, markers, pencil, collage and other techniques will be used to build on observations and focus on the science behind artistic expression. significant contributions to the YMCA and the community, according to the statement. JFK has been a vital philanthropic partner to the YMCA of MEWSA over the years, consistently contributing to their Annual Support Campaign and sponsoring special events. The support and collaboration received from JFK has allowed the Y to achieve greater impact than they could have generated on their own. JFK’s staff and trustees have been actively involved in Y leadership roles and instrumental participants in the Y’s health initiatives and events, according to the statement. JFK’s commitment to the health of the community has never been more prominent than during the height of the pandemic when it saw the third highest census of COVID-19 patients of any hospital in New Jersey, according to the statement. The recipients were honored at a socially-distanced, outdoor event on Oct. 12 at the Pines Manor in Edison, during which a YMCA of MEWSA special edition Community Benefits report was released thanks to the support of Hackensack Meridian Health. The report is publicly available online at www.ymcaofmewsa.org.

Young’s career day leads Trojans to second victory of the season By STEVEN BASSIN Staff Writer
SPOTSWOOD – 122 points. That’s the amount of points the Saint Thomas Aquinas High School football team has scored through its first three games of the season. The Trojans recorded over 50 points for the first time this season on Oct. 17 against Spotswood High School, rolling to a 54-14 victory to improve its record to 2-1 this fall. The catalyst of the Edison team’s electrifying offense on Oct. 17 in Spotswood was sophomore quarterback Jayden Young, who threw a career-high five touchdown passes in the victory. “I just want to do whatever helps us win,” Young said. “(Today) it was through the air. Last week it was on the ground. It’s just fun to be out here. The fact that we can lose this chance at any time, because of COVID-19, makes it even better.” Young started his career afternoon with his favorite throw of the day, a 46-yard
touchdown pass up the left sideline to junior wideout Jonathan Wyatt on the opening drive of the game to give the Trojans an early 8-0 lead. The sophomore quarterback made another great throw on the team’s third offensive possession of the contest, capping a six-play, 49-yard drive with a 23-yard touchdown pass to senior wide receiver Jamie Hamilton. Hamilton also had an interception for the Trojans later on in the first half. Young recorded his third touchdown pass of the day in the final seconds of the first quarter. Set up with great field position at the Spotswood 27-yard line with five seconds left in the quarter, Young threw a quick wide receiver screen to Wyatt, who then took it to the house for his second touchdown of the game to give St. Thomas Aquinas a 22-0 lead going into the second quarter. Knowing he had a mismatch on the out-

Saint Thomas Aquinas High School quarterback Jayden Young rolls to his right and throws a pass to wide receiver Jared Gardner for a first down during the team’s game against Spotswood on Oct. 17. Young threw a career-high five touchdown passes in the team’s 54-14 victory over Spotswood.
side, Wyatt told his quarterback, who he calls his “best friend on the field,” that if he threw the ball to him they would come down with it. “I told Jayden to just throw the ball up to me,” Wyatt said. “I trust him. He trusts me. We were able to capitalize on it and score (touchdowns).” Wyatt had five catches for 107 yards in the victory. Young continued to dazzle on the field when the Trojans’ offense got the ball for the first time in the second half. Facing a fourth and goal from the 5-yard line, Young extended the St. Thomas Aquinas lead to 30-0 with his fourth touchdown pass of the game. Sprinting out to his left, the sophomore threw a bullet on the run to the back of the end zone where senior wide receiver Jalen Jones stood alone to catch his second touchdown of the season. After Spotswood got the board on the following possession, Young helped the Trojans respond with his final score of the afternoon. The sophomore connected with senior wide receiver Jared Gardner on a short pass in the flat, and Gardner then turned the play into a touchdown by scampering up the sideline for a 28-yard score to give the Trojans a 38-7 lead. Four of Young’s five touchdown passes were over 20 yards. Young threw for 214 yards on his career day and now has eight touchdown passes on the season. The sophomore has nine total touchdowns through the first three
games this fall. “Last year as a freshman it was hard to make deep throws, so in the offseason I got bigger to make it easier for me to launch it,” Young said. “I put trust in my receivers to make plays, and we did. We have the best receivers and line in the area to do what we want.” Sophomore running back Joel Marellis ran for 166 yards in the victory for the Trojans, including the team’s last score of the day on a 63-yard touchdown run. Junior running back Kenny Coghan had a one-yard touchdown run in the contest for the Trojans and also had a sack on defense. St. Thomas Aquinas was six-of-seven on two-point conversions in the game. Seeing his team win two of its first three games of the season has been a great sight to Coach Brian Meeney. With all the uncertainty surrounding this season because of COVID-19, Meeney hopes his Trojans can continue their strong play each time they step onto the field. “You just want to keep working to get better,” Meeney said. “It builds confidence when you are producing between the lines during games. We just want to keep getting better.” Both Spotswood touchdowns came from senior players as the school honored all senior fall sports athletes before the game. Senior running back George Hayford reached the end zone for the fourth time this season to score Spotswood’s first touchdown of the game in the third quarter. Classmate Caden Esser showcased his tough-nose running ability on a 49-yard touchdown in the fourth quarter for the Chargers, who dropped to 1-2 on the season. Not sure if his players were going to be able to experience Saturday afternoon home games this fall back in April, Coach Andy Cammarano is happy to see his guys get the opportunity to do what they have hoped for all along and that is to play football. “Our guys want to play football and they’re happy to be able to come out and play football,” Cammarano said. “We’re very fortunate that we’re getting the chance to play.” Saint Thomas Aquinas High School wide receiver Jared Gardner catches a pass and runs for a first down during the team’s game against Spotswood on Oct. 17. Gardner had a touchdown reception in the team’s 54-14 victory over Spotswood.
