xtensive community outreach has begun as Webb Management LLC is in the process of putting together a feasibility study for the Forum Theater. “As part of this important initial step, Webb representatives will be interviewing a wide range of leaders, including those in the arts, civic, business and entertainment communities, over the next few weeks,” Mayor Jonathan Busch said in a social media post on Oct. 20. “These findings will be shared at a public forum, which will enable all residents to provide feasibility study input on the forum.” In August, the Borough Council approved a contract for Webb Management Services, New York, as theater consultant (Continued on page 4)

henever the pandemic passes, the issue with overcrowding in the Edison Public School District will still remain. The district is moving forward with an addition to Lincoln Elementary School and looking at other possible options to alleviate overcrowding.

The Edison Board of Education (BOE) approved Schools Superintendent Bernard Bragen’s recommendation for a $9 million addition to Lincoln Elementary School at a board meeting on Oct. 15. USA Architects, Somerville, prepared three options, which varied in scope, for the board’s Finance and Facilities Committee to consider. The USA Architects staff had presented the options to the committee on Oct. 12.

Board member Elizabeth Conway, who chairs the Finance and Facilities Committee, shared the three options at the BOE meeting. Option one, with an estimated cost of $7 million, includes the addition of five new classrooms, a gymnasium and a kitchen. The option requires the continued use of the two classroom trailers currently on site. Option two, which is the option the district has approved, includes 10 new class-

rooms, a gymnasium and a kitchen. The option removes one of the two classroom trailers with one remaining if needed for other uses. Option three, with an estimated cost of $12 million, included eight new classrooms, a gymnasium and a kitchen. The option would remove both classroom trailers. Woodbridge will have eight rain gardens with construction of the Woodbridge Main Library Rain Garden By KATHY CHANG Staff Writer

T

he Rutgers Cooperative Extension Water Resources Program decided to come full circle to the place where its very first rain garden was built in 2004 when deciding where members would place the 50th rain garden in celebration of the 50th anniversary of Earth Day. The program set out to build 50 rain gardens across the state to commemorate the historic 50th anniversary of Earth Day. The first rain garden was built behind the Woodbridge Health Department. Christopher C. Obropta, extension specialist in water resources with Rutgers Cooperative Extension, Mayor John E. McCormac and the Woodbridge Township Green Team – comprised of employees from township engineering, public works and planning and development – announced the start of construction of the Woodbridge Main Library Rain Garden as the 50th rain garden on Oct. 15. The Woodbridge Main Library Rain Garden— the eighth rain garden in the township – will serve as an innovative engineering solution to help capture and treat stormwater runoff. Two bioswales and two rain gardens are uniquely embedded within the terrain adja-

cent to the main library’s parking lot. The structures will capture and infiltrate 2,660 square feet of stormwater runoff from the parking area. The first linear bioswale will be connected to a rain garden that will permit stormwater to cascade into a second rain garden. The second rain garden will convey stormwater through a series engineered paths, a second linear bioswale, and into a vegetated area. The native flowers installed within the structures beautify the site and help to attract pollinating insects like butterflies. Tom Flynn, certified floodplain manager for the township, said rain gardens help to better infiltrate storm water recharge. “What people don’t realize is what carries over on hard surfaces are pollutants,” he said. “We will have plants that will flower and attract pollinating insects to better infiltrate the area.” McCormac said the township is “very proud to partner with the Rutgers team to collectively enhance sustainability initiatives and environmental integrity. “The Woodbridge Main Library Rain Garden, along with the seven other rain gardens, not only beautify an area of the township property, but also function to enhance the community’s water quality and residents overall quality of life,” he said. he YMCA of Metuchen, Edison, Woodbridge & South Amboy (MEWSA) was awarded a $50,000 Love Takes Action Award from the New York Life Foundation. The grant will allow the YMCA to continue to provide vital programs and services to the community during the pandemic. “We are grateful for the New York Life Foundation’s investment in our organization and for Seema Pande, a New York Life employee, for recognizing YMCA board member Alka Aneja and her volunteer group, Humbled By Your Service, a community group that was created and or-

ganized by Alka for their work in the community during COVID19, which brought about this grant, and will change many lives for the better,” Rose Cushing, president and CEO of the YMCA of MEWSA, said in a prepared statement. The Love Takes Action Award program awards $50,000 to local nonprofit organizations, which are championed by New York Life agents and employees. Thirtyfive community members from across the nation embodying Love Taking Action, in response to the COVID-19 pandemic, will be honored, according to the statement.

services in a total amount not to exceed $49,000. Webb Management will conduct a needs assessment in the amount not to exceed $26,000 and if necessary a business plan in the amount not to exceed $23,000. Busch said public input is a critical and important part of the process for Webb Management Services to get a good understanding of the community. “We are unlike any other community,” he said at a council meeting on Oct. 19.

NEWSPAPER MEDIA GROUP • www.centraljersey.com

“No matter how many places [Webb Management] has been to, they need to understand us for this particular project.” Busch has said the process will take months, but “it is specifically designed to gather extensive public input and consult with experts from throughout the arts industry in an effort to provide guidance on the district’s eventual business operations to ensure that the project is as successful for our community as possible.” In 2019, the mayor signed a purchase contract to acquire the theater from Marloe Enterprises Inc. for $1.399 million. The Lowery family had owned the theater for 37 years.

The acquisition of the historic 1927 theater was made possible with a $3.5 million grant from Middlesex County, the largest single grant Metuchen has received from the county. In October 2018, county and borough officials announced the county was allocating the grant from the Middlesex County Cultural and Arts Trust Fund to help create the Metuchen Arts District. The Metuchen Arts District would include the Forum Theater along Main Street and the corner of Amboy Avenue, the site of an abandoned gas station. The acquisition of the theater is the first major step in the borough’s proposed creation of a

Metuchen Arts District, which officials announced in August 2018. The proposed arts district would include a renovation of the 450-seat Forum Theater and the conversion of the gas station next door into a contemporary indoor-outdoor event space and dining area called “Spot.” Busch has said the proposed arts district would not only restore the Forum Theater and create an art hub, but also create potential sustainable revenue which would lead to greater economic development and benefits for Metuchen and Middlesex County through parking fees and advertisements. The mayor explained that since the space would be a public entity, a special concession liquor license could be considered for an interested restaurant group.

Relieving arthritis pain

A

n estimated 27 million Americans have some form of osteoarthritis (OA). OA is the most common form of arthritis and is usually caused by the deterioration of the joint beginning with the articular cartilage. Risk factors associated with OA include trauma, previous surgery involving the joint, obesity, and a lifestyle that excessively loads or stresses the joint. The weight-bearing joints are often affected, with the knee and the hip being the

most common. Many people struggling with lower extremity arthritis related pain may be under the impression that there is very little you can do to manage arthritis pain other than live with it or have surgery. This is a typical misconception and is most definitely not the case. There are several viable options that can help successfully manage arthritis pain and in some cases may abolish pain entirely. Lose weight. This is understandably

often easier said than accomplished. However, there is no question that losing weight is one of the most effective ways of relieving not only load and stress to the lower extremity joints, but also has been shown to lead to improved overall health, improved quality of life, and certainly decreased arthritis related pain. A 10-15 pound weight loss can have a significant positive impact on pain levels. Losing weight is sometimes

Research has shown that light to moderate activities can provide more benefit than harm to your joints and of course helps to promote weight loss. condition, body type and any other notable limitations. There is unfortunately no one size fits all approach to exercise that will improve arthritis pain but there are a few activities that are typically appropriate for most arthritis patients such as light walking, pool exercise, and low impact cycling. It is advisable to consult with your doctor of physical therapy so that they can prescribe an exercise program that is most appropriate for you. An evaluation and review of your radiographic imaging can help us determine the severity of arthritis and which movements or exercises will likely benefit your condition. It is worth noting that now with the availability of telehealth physical therapy, and the fact that it is covered by most insurances, we expect many arthritis pain sufferers will take advantage of the convenience and accessibility of this service and will benefit from significant pain relief. Manual Therapy is hands on treatment directed to a joint for the purpose of improved circulation, decreasing pain and improving mobility. This treatment is also known as joint mobilization and can provide significant relief for patients struggling with arthritis related pain. This is typically performed by a doctor of physical therapy, doctor of osteopathic medicine, or a doctor of chiropractic. Joint mobilization directed to the neighboring joints can lead to reduced load and stress to the arthritic joint by normalizing range of motion and ground reactions forces. This means that your body will be better equipped to sustain normal load from daily activity without undue stress and fatigue to the involved joint. Surgery in some cases of advanced arthritis is necessary. Your surgeon will discuss your options and it is wise to consult with an orthopedic surgeon when other treatments and management strategies have failed. Surgical intervention for arthritis, especially joint replacement, can have a dramatically positive effect on pain levels and quality of life. Post-operative

rehabilitation is critical to achieve optimal outcomes. We recommend you seek a physical therapy company that is going to provide enough one on one direct contact with a doctor of physical therapy and a quality based model such as ProFysio. If it seems that your current physical therapy provider of choice is “too busy,” it’s probably because they are and you should seek another opinion or option. Call ProFysio today if you would like to request a free consultation at 732-2017886. Text “arthritis” to 732-201-7886 to download your free ebook, “What You Should Know Before Knee Replacement.”

said when meeting with Lincoln Principal Shawn Scully, his main concern was his students and the sections required per grade. Each option includes seven sections per grade, K-5; similar security entrances at the main entrance; and multi-purpose room, gymnasium and kitchen additions. Campisano said because of the pandemic, the firm needs to look at different ways on how to design schools when it comes to heating, ventilation and air conditioning units. Instead of one large unit, Campisano said each classroom will contain a small package unit. “Air is fresh air, maintained and stays within the classroom,” he said. Conway said “it’s exciting that we have the opportunity to actually move forward and help [Lincoln School] that is in desperate need to work on [its] overcrowding issue.” “[The proposed option] may not have all the bells and whistles, but every child will have a comfortable seat,” she said. Some $6 million in the 2020-21 capital outlay budget and $3 million in the capital reserve account will be used to fund the project, Conway said. It is anticipated bidding for the project would occur by March 2021, a bid would be awarded by May

2021, and the addition would be ready for September 2022. Lincoln Elementary School was on the list of schools for the two failed bond referendums in December 2019 and March 2020 to address overcrowding in the schools. Board President Ralph Errico said the current addition for Lincoln Elementary School takes away essentially all the fluff, which was in the original $14 million plan for the elementary school. He said there were upgrades to the principal’s office in the original plans for the bond referendum. Board member Jerry Shi asked about the possibility of solar panels on the school buildings. Bragen said they are in preliminary discussions with USA Architects for an energy savings program districtwide at no additional cost to the district. In continued efforts to address overcrowding, Bragen said they are continuing to look at the viability of the Dorothy K. Drwal Stelton Community Center on Plainfield Avenue. Bragen said he was in discussions with the township before the pandemic. In recent discussions with Township Business Administrator Maureen Ruane, he said the township is open for district officials to take a look at what it is really needed to renovate the building. He said he also spoke to Mayor Thomas Lankey who is 100% in support of the district. Bragen said one issue with the community center

THE CRITERION SENTINEL 9

is the building is on the New Jersey Department of Environmental Protection Green Acres Recreation and Open Space Inventory (ROSI). Bragen said the district is also looking at a property at the end of Truman Drive, site of the former New Jersey Army National Guard base. “We know there have been some issues there [with contamination], but it is worth looking at and strongly assessing if it can help us with overcrowding,” he said. “Once we get over the pandemic, [overcrowding] does not go away. We have 1,300 students in the elementary grade levels … they need space.”

Saint Joseph H.S. players happy to be back on the gridiron after COVID-19 shutdown

By STEVEN BASSIN Staff Writer

METUCHEN – It was the situation no high school fall sports team wanted to have happen to them this season. A shutdown due to the coronavirus. That is what unfortunately happened to the Saint Joseph High School football team in Metuchen after two students in the school tested positive for COVID-19. The Falcons were forced to shut down for two weeks and several members of their team had to be quarantined because of being in close contact with the individuals who contracted the virus. Being shut down resulted in the team having to move its contest against Ridge on Oct. 16 to Oct. 30. It was a hard break for the Falcons, who started off the season with two victories over Elizabeth and Westfield. “It was tough,” Saint Joseph Coach Rich Hilliard said. “You couldn’t work

Saint Joseph High School wide receiver Osiris Acevedo, left, returns the kickoff during the team’s game against Union.

or be with the kids. Those who weren’t in quarantine tried to work out together on their own. It was tough all over.” Hilliard said he was very proud of how his team handled the situation and kept themselves ready for their next chance to play. “I couldn’t be more proud of them,” Hilliard said of his players. “They did their job during a tough time. They worked out with as many kids as they possibly could and followed everything we sent them.” After over a week of being shut down, the Falcons were able to get the go-ahead to host Union at Brenner Family Field on Oct. 24.

Despite only having time for one practice with the quick turnaround to prepare for the contest, Hilliard said his senior players and the team wanted to play Union because of the unknown of how many games they would have a chance to play this season. The Falcons got their wish, suiting up to play Union. The result, however, was not what Saint Joseph players would have hoped for, with Union handing the Falcons their first loss of the season with a 25-0 victory. Junior quarterback Matt Stanton threw for 31 yards and totaled 18 yards on the ground in the loss for Saint Joseph, while teammate Jordan Kinsler rushed for 26 yards out of the backfield. The Falcons forced three turnovers in the contest, including an interception by Calson Goodwill in the third quarter that stopped Union from adding to its lead. Senior Rocco Bellamy forced a fumble on defense for the Falcons and junior John Furino racked up a sack from his defensive end position in the loss. Hilliard was happy to see his team back on the field, but said there is a lot of work that needs to be done for his squad to get its season back on track after being delayed. “Anytime you miss two weeks of practice and the other team is practicing, you’re at a terrible disadvantage,” Hilliard said. “This is the first good loss we have had here in a long time. You learn from it. You grow from it and you get ready for the next game.” Righting the ship for the Falcons begins with great preparation for their contest against Ridge and continuing that process going into the rest of their games this season. Hilliard told his players after the loss to Union that their true character will be shown by how they respond to the loss. Adding to the fact that the team has already had to overcome a COVID-19 shutdown, Hilliard believes his players will be ready to go in each game the rest of the season. “Football is a very big part of their lives and anytime they step onto the field they feel vibrant and excited,” Hilliard said. “I’m very proud of my kids and how they handled themselves through a tough time.”
