Edison Housing Authority provides low-income families with Thanksgiving meals

ommunity supporters helped the Edison Housing Authority distribute more than 250 frozen turkeys to needy families on Nov. 20. Edison Housing Authority (EHA) and local supporters spent the Friday before Thanksgiving coordinating the distribution of more than 250 frozen turkeys, chickens and dry goods to create memorable holiday meals for its Section 8 and public housing families. Food insecurity has drastically increased in the community since the beginning of the COVID-19 pandemic, Deborah Hurley, executive director of EHA, said in a prepared statement; more than 100 families visit EHA’s food pantry every third Thursday of the month. “It takes a village to do what we do at the EHA, and we so are grateful for the generous support we received from Edison Township and surrounding organizations that banded together to ensure our families did not go without,” Hurley said in the statement. The local community also donated hundreds of dollars, thousands of dollars’ worth of gift certificates to Stop & Shop, ShopRite and Walmart, event preparation

assistance, and day-of support. “So many people donated not only food but also their time and effort to help our families share this important meal together,” Hurley said in the statement. In particular, Hurley mentioned Edison New Jersey Fire Fighters IAFF Local 1197; Jay Elliot, director of health and human services at Edison Township; Edison’s Community-Oriented Policing Unit, led by Chief Thomas Bryan and Deputy Chief Howard Askelson, as well as assigned personnel Sgt. Ship, Officer Iorio and Officer Dong; ShopRite of South Plainfield; Stop & Shop on Inman Avenue in Edison; Regina Arnold, principal at Martin Luther King Elementary School; New Life Ministries; Council President Joyce Ship-Freeman; The Robert E. Holmes Gardens and Julius Engel Gardens Tenant Association; and the Board of Commissioners of the EHA. EHA will continue accepting donations and gift certificates to help those in need throughout the holiday season, including toys for children ages 2-13. Email Hurley at DHurley@EdisonHA. org or call Michelle Thorne, director of property management, at 908-561-2525 to coordinate donation efforts.

Edison Public Schools will transition to fully remote learning through Dec. 23 By KATHY CHANG Staff Writer

D

ue to the rising number of positive COVID-19 cases in the district over the past few days, the Edison Public School District transitioned to fully remote learning on Dec. 7. Schools Superintendent Bernard Bragen informed the community of the decision in a letter on Dec. 2 stating we “believe this transition is prudent at this time.” “The decision was also made in consultation with the Edison Department of Health,” he said, noting remote learning

will continue through at least Dec. 23. Bragen said the district plans to return to the in-person hybrid instructional model on Jan. 4 after winter break depending “on numerous external factors related to the virus.” “A final decision on this will be made closer to the proposed date of return,” he said. The transition to full remote learning comes after Bragen expressed the district would continue its hybrid in-person schedule as long as it would be safe to do so following New Jersey Department of Health,

Edison Township Department of Health and Centers for Disease Control (CDC) Prevention guidelines. Recently he visited Lindeneau Elementary School, which has the highest percentage of students attending the hybrid inperson model. “It was so refreshing,” he had said of the visit. “The students were eager, enthusiastic to be there and so were the staff, whether support staff, teachers and administrators. As I reflect on this and people ask why don’t you close, why don’t you send everybody home, I think of those children,

those staff members who have joy of coming to school everyday to have some degree of normalcy.” The Edison School District has two high schools, four middle schools, nine elementary schools, one intermediate school, one primary school and the operation of a preschool program. For more information, visit www.edison.k12.nj.us. For more information about the free daily breakfast and lunch meals and/or a seven-day meal kit for students, email food.service@edison.k12.nj.us.

Institute where Einstein spent his career undergoes major renovations

uld Hall hasn’t been touched in a long time,” Mark A. Sullivan, architect and partner with the locally headquartered, globally active JZA+D, said in a prepared statement. “Given the evolution of scientific pursuit, the spaces within buildings like this one need retrofits to suit changing needs and to support the expansion of digital resources.” Sullivan and managing partner Joshua Zinder realigned and updated 2,000 square feet of the interior, but with a mission of providing a template for the complete interior renovation to come later, according to the statement. “Because most resources have been transferred to digital media and archived electronically, periodical rooms and library stacks are no longer the best use of space. New member offices are needed far more,” Sullivan said in the statement. At the institute, members are invited to work and study for a set term, as opposed to faculty who enjoy permanent positions and even retain their office spaces after retirement. The project team tore out the entire periodical room and punched new door openings from the hall to create space for three new member offices. Additionally, the design has replaced a mid-20th Century li-

brary stack with four more member offices, and one new faculty office. Old architectural drawings indicate this latter area may have included Einstein’s own faculty office, before it was converted to stacks in 1984, according to the statement. JZA+D’s scope for the project also included renovating the librarian and assistant librarian offices, as well as the 160-square-foot “secure stack,” which Sullivan said houses the institute’s most important and fragile volumes, according to the statement. As an ode to the building’s history, original millwork and shelving salvaged from the periodical room has been reinstalled in the secure stack area of the librarians’ offices. The palette of durable finishes and furnishings for the updated interiors includes carpet tile for most floors, new LED lamps and fixtures, and updated drop ceiling systems to replace old sheet rock. “Some of the ceilings were actually an original plaster mix containing asbestos, creating additional challenges for the con-

struction teams,” Sullivan said in the statement. The design team bore in mind that this project would be a trial run for a future full renovation of Fuld Hall, so the palette can be easily replicated in the future. “We couldn’t be more pleased with the overall outcome of this project,” Janine M. Purcaro, chief operating officer at the Institute for Advanced Study, said in the statement. “Mark and the whole team at JZA+D are ideal collaborators, listening to our needs and working closely with us to deliver a promising template for the eventual full renovation of Fuld Hall.” The project could possibly include, in the future, updates to aging mechanical systems and replacement of the original, single-pane sash windows. Located in Princeton, JZA+D was founded in 2006 by principal Joshua Zinder, AIA, to deliver multidisciplinary services for sustainable and contemporary buildings, interiors and product designs. The collective educational and professional experience of JZA+D’s staff spans more than 95 years in global markets. JZA+D has won numerous design awards and its work has been seen in publications around the world. The staff actively participates in trade and professional organizations such as AIA, NCARB, USGBC, ACSA, IIDA, IOREBA, NJRA and Gotham Networking. More than half of the firm’s architectural staff is LEED accredited. For more information, visit www.joshuazinder.com. The Institute for Advanced Study is one of the world’s foremost centers for theoretical research and intellectual inquiry. Located in Princeton, the IAS is dedicated to independent study across the sciences and humanities. Founded in 1930, the Institute boasts the work of founding IAS Professor Albert Einstein. Each year, the Institute welcomes more than 200 of the world’s most promising post-doctoral researchers and scholars who are selected and mentored by a permanent faculty, each of whom are preeminent leaders in their fields. Among present and past faculty and members there have been 35 Nobel Laureates, 42 of the 60 Fields Medalists, and 19 of the 22 Abel Prize Laureates, as well as many MacArthur Fellows and Wolf Prize winners.

and transfers the students’ emotional data into a dashboard using different metrics, so that educators can track understanding in real-time and tailor instruction based on the feedback. The app will use machine learning to analyze the faces in a class, checking to see if students understand the lesson. The platform will then transmit this data to the teacher. “The Congressional App Challenge is an important platform for students to showcase their technical and creative skills,” Congressman Frank Pallone, Jr. (NJ-06) said in a statement released by his office. “I congratulate Samay, Ansh and Aditya for their winning app and applaud all of this year’s participants for their creativity. I continue to be impressed by the ingenuity displayed by the winning teams each year and would like to thank the judges for their engagement and attention to this year’s contest. The coronavirus pandemic has highlighted the immense challenges associated with distance learning. This app could truly help educators use

real-time data to improve instruction and ensure that students are maximizing their potential. As the chairman of the House Energy and Commerce Committee, I have seen how critical innovative technology is in creating new industries and opportunities for all Americans. I will continue to support investments in STEM education in New Jersey and across the country.” The Congressional App Challenge is an annual competition that highlights the value of computer science and STEM education by encouraging high school students to learn how to code through the creation of their own apps. Entries in New Jersey’s 6th Congressional District were assessed by a panel of local experts on several criteria, including demonstrated knowledge of coding and programming skills as well as the quality and implementation of their ideas. As the winning app in the contest, DataMeet will be displayed on the Congressional App Challenge Website and on a digital display in the Capitol Building next year.

tion patrols and sobriety checkpoints looking for motorists who may be driving while intoxicated. The national effort endeavors to raise awareness about the dangers of impaired driving through a combination of high-visibility enforcement and public education. During the last five years New Jersey has experienced more than 36,000 alcohol involved crashes resulting in 648 fatalities, according to provided information. Last year, 22% of all motor vehicle fatalities in New Jersey were alcohol-related. Nationally, 10,551 died in 2018 in drunk driving crashes. The societal cost associated with these crashes is estimated to be $44 billion annually, according to the statement. Law enforcement agencies participating in the Drive Sober or Get Pulled Over 2020 Year End Holiday Crackdown offer the following advice for the holiday season: • Take mass transit, a taxicab, or ask a sober friend to drive you home. • Spend the night where the activity or party is held. • If you see an impaired driver on the (Continued on page 9)

Rutgers leading coronavirus therapeutic clinical trial that focuses on cases with mild symptoms

Researchers are investigating a potential treatment for people recently diagnosed with SARS-CoV-2 who have no or mild symptoms Rutgers is leading a clinical trial assessing the combination of nitazoxanide, ribavirin and hydroxychloroquine to treat people 21 or older who are infected with SARSCoV-2 and are asymptomatic or mildly symptomatic. The trial is being conducted with Synavir Corporation, a global health company that works with academia, industry and government to develop combination treatments for new viral infections. The trial — called Triple Combination Antiviral Coronavirus Therapy (TriACT) — seeks to determine whether treating people who test positive for coronavirus but who do not have symptoms or have mild symptoms with this combination will reduce the amount of virus and their chances of getting sick, according to information provided by Rutgers on Nov. 30.

There are no proven treatments for COVID-19, but there is some evidence that medications used to treat other infections might also work against COVID-19, especially if they are used in combination. This three-drug combination has been shown in experimental studies to be highly effective in suppressing viral replication. Participants will be given the drug combination or a placebo. “Medications for outpatients with COVID-19 that shorten the duration of the illness, prevent the need for hospitalization and, perhaps most importantly, prevent spread of the disease to others are a critical need that are currently missing in therapeutics,” principal investigator Jeffrey Carson, MD, a Provost at Rutgers Biomedical and Health Sciences and a Distinguished Professor of Medicine at Rutgers Robert Wood Johnson Medical School, said in the statement. The trial will assess the rate of decline in viral load in 70 people over 10 days and compare the proportion of participants who are

asymptomatic and symptomatic at 10 days versus the time of onset; the frequency of the development of fever and other symptoms of COVID-19 in those who were asymptomatic at enrollment; the progression in severity of COVID-19 symptoms, including hospitalization and length of stay, admission to an intensive care unit and the number of days in the unit, and death of any cause; the severity of disease in participants who develop symptoms of COVID-19; and the side effects of the therapy compared to a placebo. It also seeks to determine whether the baseline viral load predicts response to therapy and new COVID-19 infection in household members. The trial was designed to allow the study participants to largely participate safely from home. They will visit the clinic only three times. They will receive a TriACT Study Kit, which includes the study medicine, swabbing kits and all other materials needed to complete the investigation, within

10 days, and will return to the clinic at days 14 and 28 for a status check, according to the statement. “To successfully treat life-threatening RNA viruses such as SARS-CoV-2, we believe that antiviral medicines must act on multiple, sequential points in the viral replication life cycle,“ Gregory T. Went, co-founder at Synavir, said in the statement. “We are pleased to collaborate with Dr. Carson’s team to investigate this approach to treatment of COVID-19 and potentially help improve outcomes for newly diagnosed patients.” The researchers are seeking referrals from physicians of outpatients with a SARSCoV-2 positive test within seven days. PRAYER IS POWERFUL Oh, most beautiful flower of Mount Carmel, fruitful vine of splendor of Heaven, Blessed Mother of the son of God, Immaculate Virgin, assist me in my necessity. Oh, Star of the Sea, help me and show me herein you are my Mother. Oh, Holy Mary Mother of God, Queen of Heaven and Earth! I humbly beseech you from the bottom of my heart to succor me in this petition. There are none that can withstand your power. Oh, show me herein you are my Mother. Oh Mary conceived without sin pray for us who have recourse in thee (3Xs). Holy Mother, I place this cause in your hands (3Xs). Holy Spirit, you who solve all problems, light all roads so I can attain my goal. You who gave me the divine gift to forgive and forget all evil against me and that in all instances in my life you are with me, I want in this short prayer to thank you for all things as you confirm once again that I never want to be separated from you in eternal glory. Thank you for your mercy towards me and mine. + Say this prayer 3 consecutive days and publish prayer after petition is granted. Do not despair. Additional advice and petition. Pray the Rosary regularly. F.A.M.
