he Metuchen Arts Council is joining the New Brunswick Community Arts Council, the Mason Gross School of the Arts and the Highland Park Arts Council in the fourth annual Windows of Understanding public art project. The Windows of Understanding Project is an initiative that unites local artists, organizations and businesses to promote compassion and awareness around social justice issues impacting local communities. The belief of the project’s creators is that through visual language, artists can communicate methods of understanding in powerful ways that cut across cultural boundaries, according to information provided by the Metuchen Arts Council. In the face of the duel pandemic of COVID-19 and racial injustice, the scope of the Windows of Understanding Art Project has widened its lens to incorporate the impact of these challenging circumstances, according to the statement. Themes for the 2021 project include food insecurity, public health, trauma and recovery, climate change, and youth engagement.

Metuchen mayor, council vow to continue member’s passion for environment By KATHY CHANG Staff Writer

M

etuchen Mayor Jonathan Busch and Borough Council members vowed to continue Councilman Todd Pagel’s energetic passion for the environment, climate change, pedestrian and bicycle safety, infrastructure and transportation. “It’s been a true pleasure serving with all of you and serving the people of Metuchen these past three-and-a-half years,” Pagel said. “I look forward continuing to advocate as I leave council as a

resident working with groups, Bike-Walk Metuchen, Metuchen Downtown Alliance and [Metuchen Youth For Equity and Racial Injustice].” Busch said Pagel’s enthusiasm and positive outlook during his term on the council has been “incredibly refreshing.” “You don’t get that a lot in government,” he said. Council President Linda Koskoski said she did not expect the level of energy and dedication from Pagel when he joined the governing body. The Metuchen Democratic Committee selected Pagel to fill Jay Muldoon’s seat

when he resigned to become borough administrator in September 2017. Pagel was elected to his first term in November 2017. He did not seek re-election this year. “Thank you for always keeping in the forefront with us environmental concerns,” Koskoski said. “I think it’s something that gets pushed to the wayside because everything else seems so pressing.” Koskoski said Pagel has given her the energy to pursue vendors for electric garbage trucks. “I am working with the DPW [Department of Public Works] in Jersey City who have acquired five [electric garbage

trucks], which I learned from you,” she said in her comments to Pagel. Pagel said Koskoski taking the lead on electric garbage trucks is meaningful. He joked it was not the last time he was speaking at a council meeting. “My plan is to call into every single one just as if I am still on council,” he said. Pagel said Muldoon and former Councilman Ron Grayzel have served as mentors for him in his position on council. He said he would be there in support for Councilman-elect Tyler Kandel, who will begin serving his first council term in January.

Edison Cops for Tots toy drive a success, more than 3K toys distributed to children for the holiday season

PHOTOS COURTESY OF EDISON POLICE DEPARTMENT

More than 3,000 toys were distributed to approximately 400 township children for the holiday season through the Cops for Tots first toy drive.

M

ore than 3,000 toys were distributed to approximately 400 township children for the holiday season through the Cops for Tots first toy drive. The Community Oriented Policing Unit, which includes Police Sgt. Donald Ship and Police Officers Jennifer Iorio and Shirley Dong, took a “boots on the ground approach” and saw a community need for the toy drive. The Cops for Tots toy drive was organized by Ship and was run entirely by the Community Oriented Policing Unit out of the Police Administration Bureau. The Police Administration Bureau is made up of police executives Chief Thomas Bryan, Deputy Chief Howard Askelson, along with Captain Brian Maurath and Lt. Andrew Brzozowski. “The tearful eyes of parents when we arrived at their residence was enough to convince me that we need to do more for Edison,” Ship said. “It brings great joy to the Edison Police Department and the Community Oriented Policing Unit that we were able to distribute thousands of dollars’ worth of items to hundreds of Edison children who would have not had any toys this holiday season.” The unit documented the initiative on the Edison Police Department’s social media page with photos. The Community Oriented Policing

Unit, formed in September, builds ties and works closely with members of the community, giving citizens more control over their quality of life issues, Bryan has said. “In essence, our officers will become part of the neighborhood to get a better sense of residents’ needs and help residents develop a greater trust in our officers,” he said. The formation of the Community Oriented Policing Unit strives to change the fact that some individuals’ first interaction with the police isn’t a positive one. “When the local police department delivers toys to your family, that is something the children and parents will never for-

get,” Ship said. “This also creates positive memories of the police for the recipients.” Although the novel coronavirus pandemic has halted some of the unit’s initiatives, the unit had previously launched a successful Operation Thanksgiving, delivering turkeys and non-perishable food items for residents in need, followed by the successful Cops for Tots toy drive, which kicked off on Nov. 27. Without the support and generosity of the community leaders, the community as a whole, and local businesses, the initiatives would not have been as successful as they were, Ship said.

The police sergeant, who is currently working to earn his doctorate degree in education, has embarked on research to continue the mission of Cops for Tots and expand the drive from toys to township children in need of assistance with school, clothing, food or other emergency needs. To continue the efforts of Cops for Tots and partner with the Community Oriented Policing Unit, call 732-248-6462 or email COP@edisonpd.org. New partnerships will allow for the Community Oriented Policing Unit to provide needs for the community on a continuous basis.

Art project (Continued from page 1)

For the Metuchen branch of the project, artists will be working with The First Presbyterian Food Pantry (food insecurity), the Metuchen First Aid Squad (public health), Women Aware (trauma and recovery), the Edison Greenways Group (climate change) and Kiddie Keep Well Camp (youth engagement). The artwork will be exhibited at the Metuchen Public Library Art Gallery. A virtual exhibit will also be mounted. More than 20 non-profit and social service organizations whose missions reflect these themes will be paired with artist facilitators to create original works of art. The project launches on Jan. 18, which is Martin Luther King, Jr. Day, as a way of paying homage to Dr. King’s legacy with a designated “Day of Understanding.” The works will be on display in storefronts and public spaces throughout New Brunswick, Highland Park and Metuchen through Feb. 28. In addition, programming in New Brunswick and Highland Park will include virtual poetry readings, performances, educational workshops and panel discussions around social justice themes that will complement the visual displays throughout the run in New Brunswick, Highland Park and

In other programming, the Metuchen Human Relations Commission will sponsor virtual “Community Conversations” with the agency directors and the artists to highlight the good work each agency does in the community. “In Metuchen, we know from experience that art, in all its forms, has the power to open hearts and minds,” Metuchen Mayor Jonathan Busch said in the statement. “We welcome the opportunity, especially in these times, to join with our neighbors in New Brunswick and Highland Park to call attention to the unsung heroes in our communities who strive for social balance through education, public service and artistic expression.” Support for Windows of Understanding 2021 has been provided by Middlesex County; the New Brunswick Cultural Center; Rutgers University, Mason Gross School of the Arts; Rutgers University Division of Diversity, Inclusion and Community Engagement; Highland Park Arts Commission; Metuchen Arts Council; and New Brunswick Performing Arts Center. espite the ongoing pandemic, the Edison Housing Authority (EHA) safely continued its tradition of more than two decades, providing hundreds of families in public housing with gifts and food for the holidays. “This is an event that the community looks forward to experiencing every year,” Deborah Hurley, executive director of EHA, said in a statement provided by EHA. On Dec. 18, EHA staff and volunteers from the tenant associations donned personal protective equipment while acting as Santa’s elves, giving out beautifully wrapped gifts and nutritious boxed meals to more than 170 families, according to the statement. “This is always a special time of year for our staff, commissioners, and families, as we enjoy banding together to ensure the children living within the EHA experience a magical holiday season,” Hurley said in the statement. Gift-wrapped toys were provided with support from Martin Luther King Elementary School; commissioners of the EHA; and Sgt. Donald Ship, Officer Jennifer Iorio and Officer Shirley Dong of the Edison

Police Department. “We truly could not have made Christmas extra-special without the Edison Police Department,” Hurley said in the statement. Additionally, Edison council president Joyce Ship-Freeman donated gift cards for senior citizens living within the EHA, while Northfield Bank in Westfield held a toy drive to donate more than 50 toys to the EHA community. “We truly appreciate the goodwill received by Northfield Bank, with the efforts of Ray Cruz, branch manager, and Kelly Cunha, assistant manager, as they have consistently been generous in their support of our community,” Carlos N. Sanchez, chairman of the Board of Commissioners at EHA, said in the statement. Through a combination of public housing, mixed income housing, and rental assistance, EHA works to improve the lives of low-income residents of Edison while offering programs and workshops geared toward assisting residents to become financially sufficient. To learn more about EHA, email Hurley at DHurley@EdisonHA.org.
