Monmouth Conservation Foundation works to preserve open space

By CHARLES DAYE

Staff Writer

T

he executives who direct the efforts of the Monmouth Conservation Foundation (MCF) believe having access to parks and open spaces has improved Monmouth County residents’ quality of life during the 2020 coronavirus pandemic. The foundation, which has offices in the Lincroft section of Middletown, is Monmouth County’s only county-wide land trust. At present, the foundation’s directors are working on about a dozen open space initiatives throughout the 665-square-mile county that is home to almost 620,000 residents. The Monmouth Conservation Foundation was founded in 1977 by Michael Huber and Judith Stanley Coleman as a nonprofit organization. The foundation works to preserve land and protect the county’s natural habitat. During the past, 43 years, the organization has saved more than 22,500 acres of open space and farmland, according to its website. As more farmland and open space is targeted for development for residential and commercial uses, the foundation forms partnerships by serving as a facilitator and/ or partner among public and private entities.

ning said the foundation has a priority list of 11 projects at the present time. He said the foundation is “trying to raise sufficient funds to match funds provided by the state, the county, a municipality or individuals.”

He said the foundation is working on projects in Howell, on farmland preservation initiatives in Colts Neck, and on three waterfront projects, including Swimming River Park in Red Bank. The MCF is also interested in improving green space in the more urban areas of the county such as Asbury Park and Long Branch. “In general, we have park projects, we have farmland projects … We are also saving properties that surround Naval Weapons Station Earle in Howell, Colts Neck and a few other municipalities, so we are working with the Navy on those projects,” Kastning said. He noted that “many people think we are part of the Monmouth County Park System or the county, which of course we are not. We are an independent organization.” MCF Deputy Executive Director Amanda Brockwell said that in addition to using funding that is provided by taxpayers, the organization “is raising private dollars from people around the county and beyond that ultimately go to fund these projects.” In September 2019, the New Jersey Department of Environmental Protection’s Green Acres program and the MCF completed the $3.8 million purchase of 190 acres of forests and forested wetlands that (Continued on page 8)

Hotel Tides to host Trianglist works by Howard Schoor

A

t 81, Howard Schoor has had too many life acts to assign a number to this one. Trianglism is his personal art/life movement. Schoor’s mold is that of other self-taught originators, existing apart from the art world establishment. A phrase widely attributed to art historian and author Roger Cardinal, “outsider art” is described by The New York Times writer Roberta Smith as encompassing a “certain purity.” Smith went on to describe it as “an unstoppable need to make art unsullied by the ‘insider’ art world, with its fine art degrees and commercial machinations that always struck me as rather hoity-toity.” Schoor’s Trianglist works embody inescapable purity. The art is unsullied. His medium is spackling paste, oils, acrylics and markers on canvas, according to a press release. Howard Schoor’s art will be on display at Hotel Tides, 408 7th Ave., Asbury Park, from June 14 through July 12. Schoor is a classically trained and licensed professional engineer. He built and led one of the United States’ largest regional engineering firms from 1967-92 in Manalapan. Daily, he worked with – and sometimes against – the triangle. Today, the triangle remains the focus of his art conscious. Then as now, Schoor leverages their angles and, as he discerns it, aesthetic, to shape and deliver compelling visual narratives, according to the press release. His Trianglist works evidence his love of architecture, forms, angles and shapes, and his belief that “less can be more.” Trianglism tells a story. The Trianglist, Schoor, engineers emotion. Schoor was an art consumer long before he was an art creator. For a long time he, too, succumbed to the “hoity-toity” and “hocus-pocus” commercial machinations of the “insider” art world. As a consumer of important works, he learned quickly the arbitrary nature of the contemptible phenomenon called “art value.” He was driven to, more than merely arriving at, the decision to return art value to its rightful place. “Pleasure became my barometer. If the art pleased me, it was valuable.” Emboldened, he began to create. Schoor lives and creates art in Jupiter, Fla., Bethel, N.Y., and Asbury Park. Trianglism occupies an original art

space carved by Howard Schoor. At 81 years young, Schoor acknowledges his art is pleasing to the heart and the eye. In his estimation, this is the art’s ultimate value. It is what it is.

Scooby Dooby Doo is back By Paul Hall

I

’ve watched every episode of ScoobyDoo, Where Are You! more times than I can count. Crime would run rampant in the world if it weren’t for these meddling kids. And if not for the Mystery Machine gang, I would be afraid of ghosts; well, much more afraid is a better statement. I was excited to see a new movie on the theatrical schedule for 2020 and wondered about its future when the pandemic struck. But Warner Bros. gave us a treat as Scoob! came home via digital rental and purchase on the same date that it was to be available in theaters. No waiting for this one. So grab a sandwich and let’s explore. The new film starts with a look at how Scoob (voice of Frank Welker) and young Shaggy (Iain Armitage) come to be best friends. Anyone who grew up around the series knows there had to be food involved and, of course, there was a sandwich and some Scooby Snacks present at the meet-

ing. But from day one they are the best of friends. As the young gang grew together, they found themselves at the center of many mysteries, but the biggest one is on the horizon as Scooby and an adult Shaggy (Will Forte) get kidnapped from a bowling alley and the gang will need to rescue them. Who is behind the kidnapping and can the gang find their friends before it is too late? Visually this rendition is cool to look at, as bringing all of the gang into a current timeline makes for a bright future for characters we love. The new film uses some great actors for the voice talent as well. Gina Rodriguez is Velma, Zac Efron is Fred and Amanda Seyfried is Daphne. Together they hop in the Mystery Machine van and try to find their friends. Along the way they encounter some well-cast villains and friends from Dick Dastardly (Jason Isaacs) to Blue Falcon (Mark Wahlberg) and Dynomutt (Ken Jeong). My nostalgia for Scooby fueled much of what I loved about this film. Reminisc-

included. What happened to my sandwich?

ing on past capers and fun with the new voice talent enhanced the enjoyment level here. The music is hip and updated a bit, although the story does have a couple of slow moments and feels cut and pasted together. It is the type of film that families are craving right now: Parents can share a piece of their youth, and youth can enjoy the Scooby of the future. Scoob! is a worthy addition to the lore of Scooby-Doo. It is not a perfect film, but it is quite fun for nostalgia seekers, myself

Paul’s Grade: B Scoob! Rated PG Voices of: Frank Welker, Will Forte, Mark Wahlberg, Jason Isaacs, Gina Rodriguez, Zac Efron, Amanda Seyfried, Ken Jeong Director: Tony Cervone Available now to digitally download and enjoy from online retailers everywhere, including iTunes, FandangoNOW, Amazon Prime Video and more. Plus: Don’t miss Scooby-Doo, Where Are You! as the entire TV series is available on Blu-ray and digital today as well for more Scooby Snacks!

Why is ‘celebrity’ so overused in show titles? Question: It’s tiring to see the use of “star” and “celebrity” in show titles. I clicked on to the 2020 Celebrity Edition of Food Network’s Worst Cooks in America and truly said “WHO are these people?” Isn’t it time we used terms like “celebrity” a little more carefully? —Ralph Matt Roush: And maybe think about renaming Dancing with the Stars while we’re at it, right? We are getting to the point where it’s harder to find household names at a time in a culture where people can become “famous” simply by appearing on reality TV. I admit I had to look up several names in this year’s Worst Cooks cast. Dave Coulier (Full House) and Robin Givens are fairly high-profile, and Bridget Everett is familiar to me from her comedy and cabaret work, and Brian Posehn may not be a “name,” but he’s a familiar face from sitcoms — including recurring on The Big Bang Theory. But

the others, not so much. And it reminds me that I wouldn’t recognize a Real Housewife if she came into my own kitchen. Question: What was the final body count on How to Get Away with Murder? I lost count. —Jeanne Matt Roush: I stopped counting after the second season, when I realized it wasn’t worth the effort trying to make sense of this nonsense and bailed. But they sure did get away with a lot! To submit questions to TV Critic Matt Roush, go to: tvinsider.com

Millstone officials take action on affordable housing By MATTHEW SOCKOL Staff Writer

MILLSTONE – Officials in Millstone Township are taking action to provide opportunities for the development of affordable housing for very low income individuals and families. On May 20, the Township Committee introduced an ordinance that will, if adopted, amend the land use ordinance by revising a section in the zoning regulation article.

The section will be amended to establish a provision which will state that accessory apartments will be developed for and be affordable to very low income households and conform in all respects with the eligibility and affordability requirements of the New Jersey Council on Affordable Housing (COAH). As stated in the ordinance, the revision will help Millstone Township meet its state mandated obligation to provide opportunities for the development of affordable

housing. The revision will require that all accessory apartments be affordable to very low income households. Affordable housing is defined as housing that is sold or rented at below market rates to individuals and families whose income meets certain guidelines. Very low income is one category within the guidelines. Other categories are moderate income and low income. According to township officials, Millstone’s state mandated obligation is 231

affordable housing units. The obligation to provide affordable housing has been mandated by New Jersey’s courts, which determined COAH was not enforcing regulations to create affordable housing which the New Jersey Supreme Court ruled must be constructed throughout the state. A public hearing on the ordinance is scheduled for June 17. The committee may adopt the ordinance that evening. In other business, the committee introduced an ordinance that will, if adopted, prohibit individuals from operating any motor vehicle including two-wheel vehicles, mini-bikes, trail bikes, motor scooters and go-carts in a manner that will endanger or is likely to endanger the safety or property of any person, including the operator of the vehicle, or damage public property. The ordinance will also prohibit individuals from damaging or defacing structures, buildings, parking lots, benches, signs or any other property owned by the township in park areas or on municipally owned property. A public hearing on the ordinance is scheduled for June 3. Committee members may adopt the ordinance that evening.

Monmouth County Fair cancelled due to coronavirus pandemic By MARK ROSMAN Managing Editor

T

he Monmouth County Fair, which has long been a staple of the summer season in the county, has been cancelled for 2020 as a result of the coronavirus pandemic. There will be no racing pigs, no pie eating contests, no friendly cows to pet and no surprise performance from Bruce Springsteen (“The Boss” joined Sonny Kenn on-

stage at the fair in July 1982). A message posted on the Monmouth County Fair Facebook page on May 27 reported that the fair will not take place in 2020, but states that “plans are already in the works to make 2021 our best fair yet! We hope to see you in the parks this summer.” The county fair is organized by the Monmouth County Park System and the Rutgers Cooperative Extension and is held during the last week of July at the East

Freehold Showgrounds in Freehold Township. Each year the fair features rides, entertainment, food and vendors, and the event shows its agricultural roots with displays of livestock and farm equipment, a home and garden competition, and exhibits that are shown and explained by members of the county’s 4-H organization. Several fans of the fair shared their disappointment about the event’s cancellation with messages they posted on the

Facebook page: “We withstood hurricanes, tropical storms, thunder, lightning and humidity … and loved every minute of it … my heart is broken” and “Have been entering the home and garden (competition) every year. This stinks.” Letters to the editor may be sent to news@njexaminer.com. All submissions may be edited for length, grammar, content and libelous statements.

ALLENTOWN – Mayor Thomas Fritts has paid tribute to a lifelong resident who spent decades serving the community in volunteer positions with the Allentown First Aid Squad and the Hope Fire Company. During the May 26 meeting of the Allentown Borough Council, Fritts spoke about Carol Floyd, who died at the age of 69 on May 17 at Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital Hamilton. According to an obituary posted online by the Peppler Funeral Home, Allentown, Floyd was born in Trenton and was a lifetime Allentown area resident. She was a graduate of Allentown High School and the Princeton Nursing School. Floyd worked as a Licensed Practical Nurse for Princeton Hospital for many years. She later worked as a medic for Able Medical Transportation, retiring in 2019. Floyd was active with the Allentown First Aid Squad, serving as a past captain and currently as the squad’s president, according to her obituary. “I attended the service for Carol Floyd and had the opportunity to express our

heartache and to celebrate her life,” Fritts said. “She has given back to our community in so many ways. She served with the Allentown First Aid Squad and with the Hope Fire Company Ladies Auxiliary. “Our hopes and prayers are with her family. Carol was very proud of the community and Allentown will mourn the loss of a resident who grew up here and raised her family here,” the mayor said. Floyd was the daughter of the late Caroline and Alvin Smith. She was predeceased in 1998 by her husband, Robert Floyd, and her sister, Abigail Rogers Smith. She is survived by her two daughters and son-in-law, Jennifer Floyd of Allentown, and Rebecca and Anthony Muscianesi of South River; her son and daughter-in-law, Michael and Lisa Floyd of Lenoir, N.C.; her grandsons, Alexander and Christopher Muscianesi; her siblings, Alice Stanhope, Ruth Bertagni, Tom Smith, Helen Smith and Richard Smith; and many nieces and nephews, according to her obituary. Memorial contributions may be made to the Allentown First Aid Squad, P.O. Box 252, Allentown, NJ 08501, or to the Hope Fire Company, P.O. Box 547, Allentown, NJ 08501.

were added to Allaire State Park at the border of Howell and Wall Township. The parcel is referred to as the McDowell property. “That was a project that is particularly great in terms of size, but also one of the last remaining pieces to expand Allaire State Park,” Brockwell said. “The irony of (the pandemic) is that parks are packed now. People are craving outdoor opportunities and to be part of that important acquisition was a timely opportunity. “For Allaire State Park to be expanded by 200 acres to allow for more areas of passive trails, essentially right before this crisis hit … is serving a lot of people right now,” she said. Brockwell said the county’s parks and open spaces have been an unexpected silver lining during the pandemic.

“I think it is fair to say our quality of life in Monmouth County is so much better right now because of all the opportunities people have to access open spaces and trails, and really maintain their mental and physical health at a time when we desperately need it. “What unifies all of these different (foundation) projects is that we can take an experience like what we are going through right now with this (pandemic) and reflect on a lot of priorities and what is important in our lives. “One thing I think has come forward for a lot of people is (having) access to these lands we are protecting, and it is a important thing to support,” Brockwell said. Kastning said he hopes residents and visitors will continue to enjoy Monmouth County’s parks and open spaces once the pandemic passes.

Road improvements will be funded by Millstone during 2020 By MATTHEW SOCKOL Staff Writer

MILLSTONE – Municipal officials in Millstone Township are appropriating $2 million to improve the municipality’s roads in 2020. On May 20, Township Committee members introduced a bond ordinance that will, if adopted, provide a $2 million appropriation for the 2020 road improvement program and authorize the issuance of $1.73 million in bonds or notes to help finance part of the costs of the improvements. A down payment of $271,000 from the township will cover the remaining costs. According to the bond ordinance, this year’s program will include improvements to Nurko Road, the Hickory Drive subdivision, Gravatt Circle, Fillmore Road, Ivins Lane, parts of Pine Hill Road, Chadwick Road, Graham Place, parts of Millstone Road, Algonquin Terrace, Moccasin Court, Michael Court, Forman Road, Bruere Drive, parts of Olde Noah Hunt Road and miscellaneous minor road and drainage re-

pairs throughout the township. A public hearing on the bond ordinance is scheduled for June 3 at 8 p.m. The committee may adopt the ordinance that evening. In other business, committee members introduced a bond ordinance that will, if adopted, provide a $206,000 appropriation for the acquisition of public works vehicles and equipment and authorize the issuance of $195,700 in bonds or notes to finance a portion of the costs. The remaining costs will be covered by a down payment of $10,300. The public works vehicles and equipment to be acquired include a pick-up truck, a dump utility trailer, a mini-excavator, a zero turn mower and a tractor/ roadside mower, according to the bond ordinance. Committee members also introduced a bond ordinance that will, if adopted, provide a $550,000 appropriation for the construction of a park maintenance storage building and improvements to various municipal buildings, including security

M

onmouth County Clerk Christine Giordano Hanlon is advising residents the U.S. Department of Homeland Security has extended the enforcement deadline of the federal REAL ID Act from October 2020 to Oct. 1, 2021, due to the COVID-19 pandemic. According to a press release from Hanlon, the federal government enacted the REAL ID Act after the Sept. 11, 2001 terror attacks to require more secure identification for domestic travel and access to certain federal facilities. Residents will now have additional time to comply with the law. According to the U.S. Department of Homeland Security, starting in October 2021, individuals must have a REAL IDcompliant driver license/identification to fly within the United States, unless they use a U.S. passport or another federally approved form of identification. Until that date, a standard New Jersey driver’s license will be valid for air travel

within the United States, according to the Department of Homeland Security. Prior to the pandemic, the New Jersey Motor Vehicle Commission (MVC) had been issuing REAL ID driver’s license/ identification at the three MVC locations in Monmouth County – Eatontown, Freehold Township and Hazlet, by appointment only, according to Hanlon. Now that the federal government has extended the compliance deadline by a year, the pressure and anxiety of obtaining a REAL ID-compliant identification is lifted for the time being, Hanlon said. All MVC locations are currently closed due to COVID-19. “I encourage all Monmouth County residents to be mindful of the REAL ID Act compliance deadline of Oct. 1, 2021 by obtaining a REAL ID or alternative, such as a U.S. passport, for future domestic travel by air or entrance to certain federal buildings, Hanlon said.

ON THE ROAD PETER PERROTTA

2020 Jeep Gladiator Overland 4X4

I

f you are old enough to remember the opening of the old black and white Superman television shows, you will recall that each episode began with someone exclaiming: “Look up in the sky. It’s a bird. It’s a plane. No, it’s Superman!” The same type of scenario rings true for one of Chrysler’s hottest new entries into the automotive market in many years. “Look, over there, it’s a Jeep. It’s a pickup truck. No, it’s the GladiaPeter Perrotta tor!” The 2020 Jeep Gladiator Overland 4X4 – an all new model for the Jeep line – isn’t strictly a Jeep. Neither, is it just another pickup truck. Instead, this cleverly designed, all purpose vehicle, is actually a little bit of both a traditional Jeep Wrangler and a classic pick up truck. Quite simply, it’s a “’tweener”. I decided to road test the new Gladiator for one week recently to see what all the fuss was about because this new vehicle has certainly been receiving some rave reviews and awards from the automotive press. Car and Driver magazine placed it on its prestigious “ Ten Best” list out of all the 2020 models and the Rocky Mountain Auto Press named it the 2020 “Truck of the Year”. “It’s a convertible pickup wagon dreamed up in the vein of an 83-function Swiss Army knife for the road,” wrote the editors of Car and Driver. “Unquestionably a truck and instantly recognizable as a Jeep, the all new 2020 Gladiator is the ultimate vehicle for any outdoor adventure,” said Tim Kuniskis, head of the Jeep brand, North America. “There is tremendous demand for this unique vehicle from our loyal Jeep customers and pickup truck buyers everywhere.” Yes, quite true. Taken unto themselves, the pickup truck and Jeep segments of the automotive market have been on fire the past few years. As most market research indicates, traditional sedans are struggling for market share while SUVs, crossovers and pickups have taken over the automotive landscape. So, maybe Chrysler is onto something by combining two of the hottest segments into one neat package.

2020 Jeep Gladiator Overland

While I am not totally sold on the idea yet – I am more of a traditionalist – I will say there is an awful lot to like in the new Gladiator model that makes it an extremely versatile on and off-road vehicle with a great utilitarian touch by adding the fivefoot pickup bed on the back. Like a traditional Jeep, the Gladiator doesn’t boast of precision handling or a soft ride, but, quite frankly that’s not where the strengths of this vehicle are. The strength is obviously in its ruggedness, versatility and extreme off road capabilities. While I found that driving the Gladiator was comfortable and entertaining enough, where it thrived the most was in the dirt. Once I pulled off the main road and on to the sandy, muddy paths of my South Jersey Pinelands, that is where this vehicle excelled. The oversized tires and coil spring rear suspension contribute mightily to this vehicle’s off road capabilities. Alongside the center console shifter was a second shifter that lets you select 2H for rear wheel drive, 4H for four wheel high and 4L for the down and dirty four wheel drive low situations. The Gladiator chews up sand, rocks and mud with a vengeance. You can throw a ton of stuff in the back pickup bed – a bike, kayak, barbecue grill – on your trip into the

great outdoors and still have ample room in the four seat cabin for five full-sized adults and a dog. Moreover, once you get where you are going, there is a “toy like” novelty to this unique vehicle. So, once out in the woods or down to the beach, you can remove the hardtop and doors in sections and the windshield folds down as well. Quite cool. For now, the Gladiator is offered in four models – Sport, Sport S, Overland and Rubicon – that all get the same engine, a 3.6 liter, 285 horsepower, six cylinder powerplant. My tester came equipped with the optional 8-speed automatic transmission. A six-speed manual transmission is also available. Jeep does have future plans to offer up the Gladiator with a turbo diesel engine sometime in the future. The base price of the Overland Gladiator is $40,395. My tester came equipped with $13,445 in options. When you add in the $1,495 destination charge, the MSRP sticker price came in at $55,335. Some of the pricier options included are: $2,000 for the 8-speed automatic transmission; $1,495 for an optional equipment package that includes leather seats and leather wrapped brake handle and shift knob; a $995 cold weather package that includes heated front seats and steer-

ing wheel and remote start; $995 for a premium lighting package; and $1,195 for a “Black Freedom Package” that comes with a 3-piece removable hard top, rear sliding window and rear window defroster. The EPA fuel economy ratings for this vehicle are 19 miles per gallon (MPG) overall – with 22 mpg on the highway and 17 in city driving. The EPA estimates that the average annual fuel cost for this vehicle is $2,150 as it uses about 5.3 gallons of gas per every 100 miles driven. As far as the government’s 5-star safety ratings, this vehicle has not yet been rated by the government for overall vehicle score, frontal crash, side crash or rollover risk. It comes standard with a three-year, 36,000 mile bumper to bumper warranty with a five-year, 60,000 mile limited powertrain coverage. Overall, I would have to confidently admit, that if you are an active lifestyle individual or family person, this would be an excellent vehicle to give serious consideration to when looking for a vehicle to match your lifestyle.

Green investments critical to state’s strong economy

T

he coronavirus hit hard, infecting more than 1.5 million residents in the United States and triggering the worst economic crisis since the Great Depression. New Jersey is at the epicenter of the pandemic, with more COVID-19 cases than any state except New York. Thanks to difficult but essential social distancing and reduced travel, the coronavirus is hopefully loosening its grip – at least for the time being – and the public health emergency is slowly improving. Our state and nation must now rebuild the economy while protecting health and safety at the same time. Where to begin? How about investing in clean energy, parks and trails, and stronger protections for our waterways? These green investments will help the economy recover, create new jobs and make communities healthier and safer. Tim Sullivan, CEO of the New Jersey Economic Development Authority, recently identified clean energy as one of biggest opportunities to successfully restart the state’s economy. Sullivan also co-chairs the Governor’s Restart and Recovery Advisory Council, tasked with plotting a course for reopening and repairing our economy. In an op-ed on the ROI-NJ.com (Return On Information) business news site, Sullivan wrote that the clean/renewable energy sectors “are poised to add significantly to the state’s climate, energy, environmental and economic resilience. “We should push harder than ever to prioritize the development of the offshore

wind industry, and to make the package jobs, according to a 2009 report. • Energy efficiency – The Economic of resiliency- and environmental-justice driven investments outlined in Gov. a strong return on investment, with a national average of $4 returned in natural services for every $1 invested. This return can be as high as $11 in some states. The bottom line is that we don’t have to choose between a clean, healthy environment and a strong economy. We can have both. In fact, evidence shows that economic health declines when the environment is degraded. Fortunately, New Jersey is planning for a clean energy future where most of the state’s energy comes from clean, renewable sources like solar and offshore wind. This is in stark contrast to the current administration in Washington, D.C., which is pushing for dozens of environmental rollbacks, putting clean water, air and public health at risk. Now is the time for New Jersey to double down on its investment in clean energy, energy efficiency, open space, parks and trails. These green investments are sure to appeal to millions of people here in the nation’s most densely populated state who have developed a newfound appreciation for natural lands, parks, clean air and water, and open spaces during the pandemic.
