Library presenter to discuss little known Founding Father

T

he Monmouth County Library has received an $800 grant from the Gilder Lehrman Institute of American History which will enable the library to virtually present a unique program from the institute’s national initiative on Revisiting the Founding Era. Donna Mansfield, at the Eastern Branch of the county library system in Shrewsbury, wrote the grant awarded by the institute that teaches scholars and the general public about American history. The institute also maintains the Gilder Lehrman Collection and other archives to promote American history education, according to a press release from the county library. The grant that has been secured by Mansfield will feature a presentation by historian and doctoral candidate Jennifer W. Reiss highlighting the significant contributions of little known Founding Father Gouverneur Morris on May 18. Information on registration for the program is included on the library’s website at www.MonCoLib.org The May 18 program is part of Revisiting the Founding Era, a three-year national initiative of the Gilder Lehrman

Institute of American History presented in partnership with the American Library Association and the National Constitution Center, with support from the National Endowment for the Humanities, according to the press release. “We are grateful to Donna for writing and securing this grant,” said Monmouth County Commissioner Lillian G. Burry, the liaison from the Monmouth County Board of County Commissioners to the library. “Ms. Reiss is a unique historian who has long since proven she captures the personality, problems and best attributes of each of the personages in history whom she researches and presents. “To have her present this program for our Monmouth County audience is one more example of how our library system is innovative and in the forefront of seeking the best and the most interesting, be it within the walls of the library or through the wonders of modern technology that brings our speakers directly into the homes of our members,” Burry said. Reiss, a doctoral student working on the North Atlantic in the 18th century, is particularly interested in women and gen-

der, early modern medicine and disability, British and early American legal history, popular and material culture, and Loyalism during and after the American Revolution, according to the press release. Reiss’s first research project in her doctoral program features Gouverneur Morris and the nuances of physical disability in early America, and attempted to understand how Morris, the early American statesman and diplomat, negotiated his multiple physical impairments alongside class and gender expectations in the early Republic, according to the press release. Prior to in-depth studies and research on American history, Reiss was an attorney practicing in New York and London, and an associate at the Center for Human Rights and Global Justice at the New York University School of Law. She holds degrees from the University of Cambridge (Corpus Christi College), Harvard Law School, University of Cambridge (Sidney Sussex College), and the University of Pennsylvania, where she was also awarded college and Benjamin Franklin honors. Allentown residents, attorney discuss Robbinsville project By MARK ROSMAN Managing Editor

R

esidents of Allentown spent an hour during the evening of April 20 asking questions to the attorney who is representing borough officials as they seek to mitigate the impact of commercial development in neighboring Robbinsville. The Borough Council meeting that night was held in a virtual manner during the ongoing coronavirus pandemic. Dozens of residents signed in to view the meeting. Several municipal officials

were in Borough Hall and some officials were at remote locations. Land use attorney Michele Donato joined the virtual meeting to answer questions about the proposed Mercer Corporate Park on Robbinsville-Allentown Road in neighboring Robbinsville. Robbinsville-Allentown Road (Route 526) is Church Street in Allentown. The property in Robbinsville on which warehouse distribution centers are proposed to be constructed borders a residential zone on Pondview Drive in Allentown.

Donato said the Robbinsville Zoning Board of Adjustment has granted a use variance to the applicant proposing to construct the warehouse distribution centers. A use variance was required because that use is not permitted at the location where it is being proposed. The attorney said the applicant must return before the Robbinsville zoning board to seek site plan approval. She said when that occurs, Allentown residents will be able to comment on the proposal before Robbinsville officials.

Mercer Corporate Park “is not a completed application,” Donato said. Donato fielded numerous questions from Allentown residents. Among the topics discussed were whether Allentown officials can challenge what is taking place in Robbinsville; the potential environmental impacts of the large-scale development; if the warehouse distribution centers will result in more trucks passing through Allentown; and

Will N.J. remain Garden State or become Warehouse State?

N

ew Jersey has long been known as the Garden State and keeping this title in the face of sprawl development is tough. Now the COVID-19 pandemic has indirectly added a new threat to this state we’re in’s nickname. Even before COVID-19, brick and mortar malls and shopping centers were in decline. But consumers in lockdown from the coronavirus found themselves shopping online for almost every item under the sun, available for home delivery. With this huge surge in e-commerce came the need for more warehouses and fulfillment centers to store, sort and distribute goods – and a lot more trucks to make deliveries. New Jersey is now in the midst of a warehouse construction tidal wave. The Port of New Jersey and New York is the nation’s second busiest. Giant container ships arrive regularly in Newark, Elizabeth and Bayonne, laden with goods to supply much of the East Coast. Everything in those shipping containers is going someplace. A spate of poorly sited warehouses are being proposed on productive farmland, environmentally sensitive areas and sites near residential neighborhoods. Aside from the loss of farmland and natural areas, the warehouses generate noise, traffic and air pollution from trucks. Here are just a few examples of warehouse projects around the state: • Upper Freehold Township, Monmouth County – A community group called the No Warehouse on 524 Coalition is opposing a plan to build a 566,840-square-foot warehouse on 118 acres of farmland along Route 524 — a project that would require a change in zoning. (Editor’s note: The applicant that proposed the warehouse in Upper Freehold Township withdrew the application from municipal consideration on April 16).

• Jackson, Ocean County – Several environmental groups came out against a proposal to build warehouses as part of the Adventure Crossing USA mixed use development project on Route 537. The warehouse component would require clearing 72 acres of forest; opponents say it will generate truck traffic on the edge of a residential area and increase runoff into the Barnegat Bay watershed.

sey Highlands Coalition, is rallying public support for limiting new warehouses. • Roxbury Township, Morris County – The Township Committee proposes to limit the size of warehouses in industrial districts, saying the move is necessary “to avoid excessive truck traffic on local roads and adverse effects on existing stressed intersections as well as on residential neighborhoods and the residential character of the township.”

• Robbinsville, Mercer County – Birders are objecting to a proposal to build two • Oldmans Township, Salem County – warehouses on a 90-acre property that at- A 366-acre project, with 3.9 million square tracts migratory birds, posfeet of warehouse space in sibly including threatened seven buildings, has been and endangered species. “A regional perspective is needed,” Evans wrote, “to make sure port-oriented storage and distribution functions are not consuming outlying lands that are better used for farming, recreation, or some other non-industrial use, and that redevelopment opportunities near the port that are ideal for warehousing are not instead allocated to some other land use that lacks the same location constraints.” Somers “absolutely” agrees with the regional approach, both in the Highlands and elsewhere in the state. A regional approach would allow officials to consider larger impacts: Can existing roads handle the traffic? Would noise, traffic and air pollution affect residential neighborhoods? Can warehouse development be steered away from the most important lands, like prime farmland and forests? Somers pointed out that in response to numerous warehouse proposals, Warren County officials conducted a traffic study last fall on the cumulative impact. “If all were built, the impact would be dramatic,” she said. Route 519, currently a two-lane county road, “would have to become a four-lane highway.” Regional land use planning works well in New Jersey, with two successful examples in the Pinelands and Highlands. And New Jersey has a statewide land use plan that could address this issue. The State Plan has been largely dormant since its adoption in 2001, but should be revived and updated to address warehouse sprawl and other current challenges like solar facility siting and climate change. Allentown residents, attorney discuss Robbinsville project (Continued from page 1)

whether residents can challenge what is happening in Robbinsville on their own. Mayor Thomas Fritts has said Allentown officials and their professional representatives have been negotiating with the developer of the Mercer Corporate Park in an attempt to gain concessions that would protect the borough. He said filing a legal challenge against the developer’s application would likely mean the negotiations would end. “No one on the Borough Council supports the corporate park,” the mayor said. Fritts said he would support any residents who want to challenge what is taking place in Robbinsville. Councilman Dan Payson said, “We are between a rock and a hard place and we have to do as much as we can within the guidelines. We are absolutely opposed to the continued development of warehouses. “We have to continue to fight in a way that can be beneficial to Allentown. With the hand we were dealt, (negotiation) is the best option for Allentown. This is a strategic fight,” Payson said. Donato said she could not reveal details of what Allentown’s representatives are negotiating with the developer of the Mercer Corporate Park. She told residents “there is a bias in law in favor of the development of property, which makes it tough to challenge development.” Donato said Mercer Corporate Park “was a well put together development.” She said the developer worked with Robbinsville officials to satisfy the municipality’s concerns.

ON CAMPUS Emma Rauscher of Allentown has been named to the president’s list at Miami University, Oxford, Ohio. Students who are ranked in the top 3% of undergraduate students within each division for first semester 2020-21 have been named to the president’s list recognizing academic excellence. Lehigh University, Bethlehem, Pa., has named Carly Roche of Allentown and Julian Tsang of Cream Ridge to the dean’s list in Fall 2020.

In making a case for a use variance, “the developer was able to show (the zoning board) that the site had particular suitability for the proposed use,” the attorney said. Allentown, she said, does not control development in another municipality. During a previous council meeting, Fritts told residents it was no surprise the members of the Robbinsville zoning board granted the use variance to the applicant because warehouse distribution centers

are what Robbinsville officials have zoned portions of their community to accommodate. Carmela Roberts, who is Allentown’s borough engineer, was also present for the April 20 virtual meeting. Roberts discussed storm water issues related to the Mercer Corporate Park site. She said in the final analysis, the developer will meet all of the applicable storm water requirements. In addition to comments made by Fritts

and Payson, Borough Council President John A. Elder III, Councilman Michael Drennan, Councilman Robert Strovinsky, Councilwoman Martha Johnson and Councilwoman Erica Torsiello voiced their support for the strategy the borough is pursuing and for following the advice of Allentown’s professionals, which in addition to Donato and Roberts includes Borough Attorney Greg Cannon and Andrew Feranda of Shropshire Associates, who is advising the borough on issues related to traffic.

that getting children to use marijuana at an early age will bump up tax revenue over the long term? As parents in New Jersey got wind of this flagrant disregard for the safety of our children, we stood up, we showed up and we made our voices heard. Gov. Murphy is now beating his chest about how great he is to revise the bill to allow for parental notification. Shame on you Gov. Murphy for doing the right thing only because you were caught doing the wrong thing. I look forward to the day when New Jersey has leaders in our government who can decipher right from wrong and share the same values as the parents of New Jersey.

s a concerned New Jersey resident with children, I wanted to understand this new bill that legalized marijuana. I was taken back that it bars the notification of parents when their children are caught using or possessing marijuana for the first time. I thought it must be a misprint; after all, this bill is to allow “adult” recreational use only. After reading it again – it turned out to be true – this bill promotes the use of marijuana by minors by cutting parents out of knowing their child was caught by the police with marijuana. How could our governor allow this to pass? How could our elected officials allow this bill to be introduced? Would any of them care to know their child is using marijuana? Are they so backward in their thinking

ON THE ROAD PETER PERROTTA

2021 Subaru Forester Sport

I

f the 2021 Subaru Forester were a football player, it would most definitely be an all-purpose running back. You know, the kind of running back that could not only pick up some tough yards when needed, but could block and catch passes as well – a good all-around utilitarian player. For me that’s what the Subaru brand is all about. They provide you with a goodlooking, rugged crossover with a tried-andtrue four-wheel drive system able to perform well off-road or in the snow and mud. Inside Subaru ergonomics are designed for practicality so they work well there – they are generally comfortable and able to handle a good amount of cargo. Moreover, pricewise they won’t bust your wallet. So, all Peter Perrotta around, they check all the necessary boxes. I recently put the 2021 Subaru Forester Sport to the test for one week of driving adventure and came away with generally what I expected. The fifth generation Forester comes in five different trim levels: base, premium, Sport, Limited and Touring. I drove the Sport model for one week which came in an attractive Dark Blue Pearl color with orange trim accents in the interior. For the most part, this Forester is a joy to drive. It handles reasonably well in all kinds of weather. It has ample cargo space for a compact crossover. It’s comfortable and is fairly smooth to drive and its interior ergonomics are well designed and are fairly easy to operate. However, if you are looking for the “Wow” sizzle factor this may not be the crossover for you. While this Forester is well designed for many different functions, for me it’s a bit conservative in its approach. The editors at Car and Driver seem to concur. They gave the 2021 Forester high marks for being “thoroughly practical” and having a roomy interior and being a “comfortable cruiser.”

2021 Subaru Forester Sport

But, Car and Driver handed the Forester low marks for having “slow acceleration times” and “boring” exterior styling. It also said that the base model was “quite basic.” I didn’t find this Forester to be slow, though. Powered by a 2.5 liter Subaru boxer engine that puts out 182 horsepower at 176 pound feet of torque, this Forester is quick enough to handle most driving situations well. Now, this is not a performance-type vehicle – like a BMW X1 or X3 – but for what it is, I felt it was adequately powered and handled at an above average grade. Let’s be honest. The type of consumer a crossover like the Forester is going to attract is going to bring to the table a much different demographic than the BMW or Mercedes crowd. The Forester is for the active lifestyle

crowd who have a kid or two and a dog and want to go kayaking in the mountains on the weekend. For that, this is an excellent all-around vehicle and should be high on your list if that is what you are seeking. The Sport Forester I drove carries a base sticker price of $29,395. It also has an option package for $1,645 and a $1,050 charge for destination and delivery, so the bottom-line sticker price came in at $32,090. The option package included an upgraded Subaru Starlink 8-inch touch screen multi-media system and a 576-watt 9 speaker Harman/Kardon sound system. So, for the base price of $29,395 on the Sport Forester you get a ton of standard equipment. I think, for the money, the Forester offers a good value. The EPA fuel consumption ratings on

this Forester come in at 29 miles per gallon overall – 33 mpg in highway driving and 26 around town. The EPA estimates that it will cost you about $1,400 per year for run the Forester as it uses about 3.4 gallons of gas per every 100 miles driven. On the government’s 5-star safety ratings crash test, the Forester scored an impressive 5 out of 5 – the highest rank. It received a 5-star rating in the frontal crash test as well as the side crash test and 4 stars in the rollover test. The Forester scored a 6 out of 10 on the EPA’s fuel economy and greenhouse gas rating and a 6 out of 10 on the smog rating. Peter Perrotta’s On The Road column appears regularly. He may be contacted at pperrotta@comcast.net.

Allentown baseball team off to 4-0 start in 2021 campaign By STEVEN BASSIN Staff Writer

ALLENTOWN – After the 2020 season was cancelled due to the onset of the coronavirus pandemic, the Allentown High School baseball team has been rolling offensively to begin the 2021 campaign. The Redbirds (4-0) have scored 46 runs in four games to begin the new season. “We are off to a good start and playing really good baseball,” Coach Brian Nice said. “This group of players comes to work every day and does all the little things well all the time.” The Redbirds are led by seniors Dan Merkel, Justin Marcario, Joe Dimino and Matt Bethea. The offense has been buzzing to begin the season, but the key to the team’s success this spring will be pitching, with a solid rotation of NCAA Division I talent in Bethea, Dimino and Merkel. Dimino (2-0) has 21 strikeouts in 10 innings of work and has shown the skills he will eventually take to the New Jersey Institute of Technology. Merkel pitched a complete game against Nottingham High School on April 20 to help Allentown earn a 5-2 victory. “In every game, we are expected to get a quality start, and we are all very excited about that,” Nice said. Senior Tyler Castellano and juniors Mike Doran and Mike Timberlake are three solid arms out of the bullpen. Nice believes that trio complements the starting rotation of Dimino, Merkel and Bethea. Merkel, who will attend Wagner College, is a steady two-way player, said Nice. Following the 2020 football season, Merkel was named the Mercer County

Player of the Year and early in the 2021 baseball campaign he has impressed Nice with his performance at the plate. “He’s hitting the ball hard every time he’s been up to bat,” the coach said. Bethea is also off to a strong start at the plate. During a 14-0 victory over Robbinsville on April 24, Bethea went three-forthree (4 RBI) with a single, a double and a triple. Bethea plans to attend Seton Hall University. Nice said he believes the team’s early offensive production reflects the approach each player has had at the plate. “We have a really good lineup,” the coach said. “Everyone has had really competitive at-bats.” Marcario is a player who Nice is excited to see back on the diamond. The senior was granted an extra year of eligibility and reclassified to the Class of 2021 after battling cancer during the 2019 season and losing out on his junior year. Nice said Marcario was ready to play in 2020, but his return was delayed when the pandemic wiped out the campaign. Now, Marcario is back at shortstop for the Redbirds. “It’s great to see him back playing baseball. This is where he is meant to be. He has worked hard to get back after beating cancer,” Nice said. Nice said while there are high expectations for the Redbirds this season, his players are taking things one day at a time and are “enjoying the moment” after having the 2020 season taken away. “After missing out on last season, the guys have a bigger appreciation for being on the field. We tell them to enjoy the moment and to take things one day at a time,” the coach said.

Stone Bridge robotics team debuts with successful season

D

uring the 2020-21 academic year a competitive Lego robotics team was established at the Stone Bridge Middle School, which enrolls children from Allentown and Upper Freehold Township. Melissa Domen, the business leader of the Allentown High School robotics team, is the founder of the middle school team, according to a press release. The name of the team, True North Robotics, unites the school’s motto of “Finding Your True North” with the students’ passion for robotics. With the guidance of high school students on Redbird Robotics, 14 middle school students have learned programming, building and teamwork skills, while having a successful rookie season, according to Domen. On Feb. 13, the True North Robotics team members did an outstanding job at the virtual qualifying event competition and then headed to the virtual Southern New Jersey District Championship competition on April 10. The team received the Robot Design Award and the Breakthrough Award. At the qualifying event, the students

placed fifth and sixth in the robot challenge game. At the Southern New Jersey District Championship competition, the students won the Rising Star Award and compiled an overall score well above the average for a rookie team, Domen said. Participating teams were judged on four components during the competition, including the Robot Game, a Robot Design presentation, an Innovation Project presentation and a Core Values activity. For the Robot Game and Robot Design, the team members built and programmed two robots made out of Lego to complete a series of obstacles in two-and-a-half minutes. For the Innovation Project, the True North Robotics students invented and created prototypes of special swimming gear to help prevent swimmer’s ear, and a mobile gym to encourage everyone to be more active, according to the press release. In February 2020, Domen was awarded a grant from the Upper Freehold Regional Education Foundation to start True North Robotics. Since middle school robotics competitions have a limit of 10 members per team, True North Robotics split into two smaller

competition teams. One competition team is called True North Robotics Impact and has eight students (Aaryan Desai, Ioanna Varouhakis, Vishek Desai, Luke Greenbaum, Taylor Lalla, Elena Mathew, Theo Renzulli and Jeremy George). The other competition team is called True North Robotics Innovation and has six students (Sean Gavin, Mia Laudien, Remy Fortsch, Aarav Patnaik, Benjamin Utset and Sienna Jones). Each smaller group team name is named after the core values of FIRST (a nonprofit organization that stands for For Inspiration and Recognition of Science and Technology): Discovery, Innovation, Impact, Inclusion, Teamwork, Fun, Cooperation and Gracious Professionalism. FIRST runs many robotics competitions for different grade levels from pre-kindergaren through 12th grade. True North Robotics and Allentown High School Redbird Robotics are FIRST robotics competition teams, Domen said. The True North Robotics competition level is called FIRST Lego League and the Allentown High School Redbird Robotics competition level is called FIRST Robotics

Competition. Domen said what makes the Stone Bridge Middle School team unique compared to other middle school robotics teams is that it is 100% student run. Shane Conlin, Amelia Tricker and Liam Granaghan are Allentown High School students on the Redbird Robotics team who have been helping the True North Robotics team this season, according to the press release. Domen said Upper Freehold Regional School District Superintendent of Schools Mark Guterl, Stone Bridge Middle School Principal Stefanie Folino and Stone Bridge Middle School Vice Principal Brian Myslinski have supported the team since its start. “It has been a team effort to get this team up and running with success. It has been quite an experience starting a new competitive robotics team during a pandemic,” Domen said. The 2020-21 season kicked off in the summer of 2020 with online meetings. Students learned skills such as coding a robot, building robots, robotics competitions, the culture of the FIRST organization and high school robotics. The end of the summer was spent meeting in person to build robots and obstacles made out of Lego. Online and in-person meetings were held four days a week during the school year. The competition season for middle school robotics usually starts in August and ends in December, but with it being a new team during a pandemic, this year’s season started in June 2020 and will continue until the end of April, according to the press release. Soon, the team members will start planning for the 2021-22 season. Domen said Stone Bridge Middle School students are welcome to apply for the team. Area residents and/or business owners who would like to get involved with the Upper Freehold Regional School District robotics teams may email 1807frc@gmail. com

Mansfield originally submitted for a grant from the Gilder Lehrman Institute of American History in 2018 and was invited to apply again for the most recent grant from the institute to underwrite the cost of a single program. She selected Reiss’s presentation for the grant because of the educator’s large appeal to adults and to high school students. The librarian also noted Morris is a particularly fascinating subject since he contributed so much to the founding of the nation, yet appears to be relatively unknown in the 21st century, according to the press release. “I congratulate Ms. Mansfield and the Monmouth County library staff,” Monmouth County Library Commission Chairwoman Nancy Grbelja said. “This is a very prestigious grant and the program selected by Donna is exceptional not only for the subject matter, but also because of the excellence of Ms. Reiss as a presenter. “Mr. Morris has often been referred to as the ‘Forgotten Founding Father’ and the speaker’s presentation will help people rediscover him. “In Monmouth County where so many people and places played such vital and fascinating roles in the founding of the nation, this particular program will be a highlight among the many the library offers throughout the year,” Grbelja said. For more information about this program and all of the programs offered by the Monmouth County library, visit www. moncolib.org Registration for virtual programs is also available on the website, under Upcoming Events.
