Bucs score ‘morale boosting’ first victory of 2021 season By STEVEN BASSIN Staff Writer
T
he joy of playing games has been the focus for the Red Bank Regional High School and Freehold Township High School girls basketball teams this winter, given the uncertainty of playing sports during the ongoing coronavirus pandemic. The teams met on Feb. 3 in Little Silver and battled in search of their first victory. In the end, the Buccaneers prevailed, 5653, on their home court. “To come back and get a win against a quality program is a step in the right direction,” Red Bank Regional Coach John Truhan said. “I’m happy for our kids. We are playing. We are competing. Games matter. Playing matters. I’m just happy for the kids to get a season in.” Three-point field goals were the key to the Bucs’ success as they made 10 shots from behind the arc, including seven during the first half. Senior Emma Moriarty hit five threepointers and finished with a team-high 17
points against the Patriots. Moriarty and Chloe Teter combined for four bombs from behind the arc in the second quarter to help Red Bank Regional take control. Teter’s second three-pointer of the first half was part of an 11-2 run to begin the second quarter as the Bucs grabbed a 2618 lead. Moriarty followed Teter’s basket by knocking down her third triple moments later to give Red Bank Regional a 29-20 advantage. “I felt that my shot was on,” Moriarty said. “I have great teammates who kept getting me the ball. They did a great job getting the ball to me when they knew I was on.” The Bucs led 29-24 at halftime. Things got dicey for Red Bank Regional in the third quarter as Freehold Township went on a 14-0 run at one point to take a 40-34 lead. The score was tied 40-40 as the fourth quarter began after Moriarty connected on her fourth three-pointer and Teter followed with a three-point play in the final seconds
of the third quarter. Teter finished with 15 points. The senior scored in double figures in each of the team’s first three games. Coming down to a winner-take-all fourth quarter, Red Bank Regional came up with a roaring start in a bid for its first victory. Senior Amelia Medolla cashed in five quick points and Moriarty struck from downtown, knocking in her fifth threepointer on a corner jumper, for a 48-43 lead with 4:39 to play. “Our play was to have open corners and Caitlyn (Decker) did a great job on the drive to pass it to me,” Moriarty said of the play’s design. “It was a perfect opportunity and I was happy when it went in.” Hitting five three-point field goals to help her team win will be something Moriarty said she will “always remember,” especially as she did it during her senior season. Free throw shooting down the stretch helped secure the win. Decker hit all four of her free throws in the final minute, including two with under :15 left to put the
Bucs up by three points. “For me, foul shots are all about muscle memory,” Decker said. “You have to zone everyone out and calm down.” Needing one more stop to cement the victory, Decker came up with the gameclinching steal to help Red Bank Regional improve to 1-2 in the young campaign. Decker scored all six of her points in the second half. Medolla added 12 points in the victory to give the team three players in double figures. The feeling of victory was a “morale booster” in Decker’s mind. She said she believes the Bucs can get on a roll in a season that is unlike anything the players have ever experienced. Truhan is just happy his seniors and the rest of his players are getting the opportunity to compete. Winning is great, but Truhan knows “it’s more special just to play” at this time. “To have a season gives those kids a chance to etch their names in the history of Red Bank. What we have done in the last four years is a credit to those three kids,” he said.

Michael Parent, a member of the Basie Board of Trustees and co-chair of the organization’s Education Committee. “As importantly, her heart and soul animate the Basie mission to inspire and enrich the lives of all students of the performing arts. “We applaud her selfless efforts to build our programs and capacity for the benefit of all learners, and recognize that she has succeeded in making our community, and indeed the world, a more joy-filled place,” Parent said. Scudiery began working at the Basie in 2000, strengthening the organization’s mission to promote arts education by establishing the “Cool School” arts academy. Since then, she established the Basie Awards, a ceremony to honor excellence in Monmouth County high school theater. Scudiery has also spearheaded the Basie’s arts education programs in the Red Bank, Keansburg, Fair Haven, Long Branch and other school districts, as well as professional development programs for area teachers through her work with the John F. Chen, who joined the Basie organization in 2018 as head of its Monmouth Conservatory of Music, will also serve as head of the Basie’s music programs, including its summer opera and jazz camps, Red Bank Middle School’s strings program and the Basie Center Gospel Choir. “I have been fortunate to work with Yvonne for nearly a decade,” said Giustiniani. “Under her guidance and mentorship, I have learned to be a better artist, teacher and leader, and to appreciate the real power and impact of the arts. I am privileged and
honored to have the opportunity to share everything I have learned from her so our Academy and educational outreach programs continue to grow.” “In music, traditions and values pass from one artist to the next: Haydn gave piano lessons to Beethoven, and Lady Gaga cites Elton John as a mentor,” said Chen. “As a classically trained ballet dancer and choreographer, Yvonne has always understood and championed the value of music education – that through practice and hard work, students build grit and perseverance while enjoying the emotional benefits of a creative outlet.” “These dynamic women share my passion for arts education,” Scudiery said of Giustiniani and Chen. “Coupled with their

Red Bank will lease space in church for use as senior center By MATTHEW SOCKOL Staff Writer
RED BANK – The members of the Borough Council in Red Bank have approved a lease with Trinity Episcopal Church, West Front Street, that will permit the municipality to use space in the church as a temporary senior center. It is expected that recreational activities and meetings will be held in the building for the benefit of the borough’s senior citizens. The Red Bank Senior Center, Shrewsbury Avenue, has been closed since 2019 due to infrastructure issues. On Jan. 27, council members adopted an ordinance approving the lease with Trinity Episcopal Church. The term of the lease is for three years, commencing Jan. 1. The borough has the exclusive right to renew the lease. The rent for the space in the church
will be $2,000 per month, according to the agreement. Borough officials will make a one-time payment of $700 now to prepare the space for its intended use as a senior center. The municipality will have unlimited access to the church’s common area, with the exception of Sundays prior to 2 p.m. Kitchen access will be provided Monday through Friday, according to the agreement. In other business, council members appointed Wanda Jenkins as a school crossing guard for the 2020-21 school year, effective Feb. 1 through June 1. The daily rate for the position is $29, according to a resolution. And, council members appointed Nancy Limon-Tlahuetl and Bruce Wilson as part-time parking enforcement officers with the Red Bank Police Department, effective Jan. 4. The hourly rate for the position is $16, according to a resolution.

Can ‘tiny forests’ help New Jersey’s cities and suburbs?
W
hat is the size of about 10 car parking spots, improves air quality, attracts butterflies and other wildlife, and enhances biodiversity? It’s a “tiny forest.” While many folks think of forests as places big enough to get lost in, tiny forests can be small spots that are densely planted with native trees, shrubs and plants. You might not get lost in one, but you would very likely come away feeling inspired. Around the world, there is a growing movement to create tiny forests in cities to improve their livability and help fight climate change. Micro forests do most of the things large forests do: absorb carbon from the air, soak up storm water, provide habitat for wildlife, and cool the air in summer. They also help muffle city noise. As the nation’s most urbanized state, New Jersey has many places just perfect for tiny forests. Most of the Garden State’s older cities have abandoned lots and there are already successful examples of converting abandoned lots into urban gardens. The tiny forest movement began in Japan more than 40 years ago, when botany professor Dr. Akira Miyawaki was researching methods of reforesting degraded land. He learned that with the proper soil preparation and optimal mix of native plants, accelerated growth is possible. A barren patch of land planted using the Miyawaki method can grow about a meter (slightly over 3 feet) a year and start looking like a forest in as little as three years, as opposed to decades for seedlings planted in an existing large forest.
This “pop-up” effect makes tiny forest Miyawaki’s results anywhere in the world. plantings a rewarding experience for urban His venture, known as Afforestt, turned Mischoolchildren and neighborhood volunteer yawaki’s method into an open source, stepgroups. by-step manual for building tiny forests. In two to three years a tiny forest should be well enough established to take care of itself with minimal upkeep. Then it’s time to reap the ecological benefits of the mini oasis. So far, more tiny forests have been created in Asia and Europe than in the United States. But with Afforestt’s guidance, Miyawaki micro forests have been planted in Seneca, S.C., and Maysville, Mo. It seems only a matter of time until the idea spreads in the United States. And while most tiny forests have been built in cities, they are a great idea for suburban areas with too much grassy lawn and too few trees. Suburban tiny forests would have to be fenced to keep out browsing deer, which are found in all but New Jersey’s most urbanized neighborhoods and strongly prefer native species. For more information about tiny forests, check out a great new BBC podcast, “A Forest Down Your Street” at https://www. bbc.co.uk/sounds/play/p094c7jm More information is available on Shubhendu Sharma’s Afforestt website at https:// www.afforestt.com/ Sharma also gave a well-received TED Talk that can be seen at https:// www.ted.com/talks/shubhendu_sharma_ an_engineer_s_vision_for_tiny_forests_ everywhere?language=en

PRAYER TO THE BLESSED VIRGIN (Never known to fail). O most Beautiful Flower of Mt. Carmel, Fruitful Vine, Splendor of Heaven, Blessed Mother of the Son of God. Immaculate Virgin, assist me in my necessity. Oh Star of the Sea, help me, and show me herein You are my Mother. Oh Holy Mary, Mother of God, Queen of Heaven and Earth, I humbly beseech You from the bottom of my heart to succor me in my necessity (make request). There are none that can withstand Your power.
