Monmouth Regional holds virtual graduation for Class of 2020 By STEVEN BASSIN Staff Writer

S

eniors in the Monmouth Regional High School Class of 2020 were honored during a virtual graduation ceremony that was streamed through Principal Brian Evans’ YouTube account on June 19. The high school in Tinton Falls enrolls students from Tinton Falls, Eatontown and Shrewsbury Township. More than 200 graduates were celebrated for their accomplishments. The graduation ceremony was held in a virtual format due to restrictions on inperson gatherings necessitated by the 2020 coronavirus pandemic. The high school closed in March and students continued their education remotely through the end of the academic year. “Overall, I think the graduation ceremony went very well,” Evans said. “Using YouTube allowed us the platform to connect with all of the graduates’ families and friends around the world.” Speeches from Class of 2020 valedictorian Lauren Ledesma, salutatorian Bethany Stanton and Superintendent of Schools Andrew Teeple followed. Board of Education President John Cohen presented the James L. Creekman Award to Winter Garrison. The Creekman Foundation awards a $1,000 scholarship each year to a senior who has lent great support to the school during their time in the building. The 40-minute presentation ended with each graduate having a slide with their name and senior portrait. Ledesma’s message to her classmates was that despite how the last months of their high school career went because of the pandemic, they still should be proud of the what they achieved during the last four years and to cherish those memories. The valedictorian encouraged her classmates to continue to find their calling and not to be afraid of taking chances and trying something new. “You want to find something you love to do instead of doing something you’re not interested in,” Ledesma said. “It’s good for us to expand our horizons. It will help us continue to look forward and make the most of the opportunities that come our way.”

Monmouth Regional High School valedictorian Lauren Ledesma addresses her classmates during a virtual graduation ceremony.

Ledesma acknowledged she and her peers were frustrated with how the final months of their senior year went. While a virtual graduation was the best option, it was not what any of them wanted, but the pandemic did bring the Class of 2020 together. Ledesma said she was pleased to see her classmates speak out about the impact the pandemic was having on their senior year and said it helped the seniors push through the remainder of the school year. Evans believes the seniors handled everything connected to the pandemic very well and called the students’ commitment

to the school, their family and the community “tremendous.” Teeple encouraged the seniors to let their voices be heard, saying that 2020 is the most important year for them and that this year’s class can help bring the type of change the nation needs. The last few months have been tough for the Class of 2020 with special events like prom and other senior activities being canceled. It is not the ending any of the graduates would have thought about in September, but there is a silver lining hopefully on the horizon for the Class of 2020 with an in-

person graduation being planned for July, according to Evans. A live graduation will be nice, Ledesma said, before adding the event may hold the same meaning as a regular graduation depending on what is allowed. While being able to come up to the stage to receive a diploma will mean a lot to the seniors, things like not being able to celebrate with friends and family members on the field after the ceremony could lessen the meaning of the milestone, the valedictorian said. The in-person graduation “may not be what people expect,” she said.

Holmdel, Rumson residents serve on university’s board

A

t its June 18 meeting, the Monmouth University Board of Trustees elected its new slate of officers and four members with terms beginning July 1. The private university is in West Long Branch. Holmdel resident Jeana M. Piscatelli ’01 ’02M was elected chair of the board, the first woman in the university’s 87-year history to hold the position, according to a press release from the university. Rumson resident Miles J. Austin III ’18 will join the board as a new member. Piscatelli is senior vice president, director of treasury management at OceanFirst Bank. She has been a member of the university’s board since 2010. At OceanFirst, she is responsible for implementation of overall strategy and management of corporate treasury. Before that, Piscatelli held various roles with J.P. Morgan and Wells Fargo in New York. An alumna of the university’s business school, Piscatelli previously served as vice chair and will succeed Michael A. Plodwick ’82 as chair, according to the press release.‚Äã “It is an honor to be named chair of the board at my alma mater,” Piscatelli said. “Monmouth is home to me and I am ex-

cited to work alongside President (Patrick) Leahy and fellow board members to build upon our strong foundation as one of the region’s premier private universities.” Austin is a former offensive quality control coach for the San Francisco 49ers and a former wide receiver who played pro-

fessional football for 10 seasons, spending the majority of his career with the Dallas Cowboys. He is the founder of the Austin Family Foundation, a nonprofit organization whose mission is to support and promote youth programming focused on character

development and community involvement in lower income areas, according to the press release. He holds a degree in political science from Monmouth, where he was a standout wide receiver for the football team from 2002-05. Austin’s jersey was retired in 2014 and he was inducted into the Monmouth University Athletics Hall of Fame in 2016. John A. Brockriede Jr. ’07 ’10M and Leslie N. Hitchner will serve as vice chairs, Christopher D. Maher as treasurer, and John C. Conover III as secretary of the Board of Trustees. Tasha A. Youngblood Brown ’97 ’03M, Jeremy Grunin, and James S. Vaccaro III will also join the board as its newest members, according to the press release. The Monmouth University Board of Trustees is composed of 32 regular members who are elected to four-year terms and are divided into four class years. The board operates within the conventional framework of higher education academic governance for independent institutions. Board members are concerned with higher education issues and share a specific and genuine involvement with Monmouth University, according to the press release.

New Jersey Hope and Healing provides support services

M

ore than one third of New Jersey adults reported exhibiting symptoms of anxiety and depression resulting from the COVID-19 pandemic in early June, according to a U.S. Census Bureau survey. To help residents navigate the emotional and behavioral health impacts of COVID-19, the Mental Health Association in New Jersey (MHANJ), Catholic Charities and Family Service Bureau of Newark are providing support services through the New Jersey Hope and Healing Crisis Counseling program (CCP), according to a press release from the MHANJ. This initiative is supported by the New Jersey Department of Human Services Division of Mental Health and Addiction Services through a federal grant. New Jersey residents finding it difficult to deal with the fear, loneliness, anxiety, anger, grief and feelings of disconnection are encouraged to connect with trained mental health staff through a variety of free and confidential services offered via phone, text or virtually as part of the New Jersey Hope and Healing CCP, according to the press release. Residents can reach trained staff through the NJ MentalHealthCares Help Line by calling 866-202-HELP (4357) or texting NJHOPE to 51684 from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m., seven days a week. The MHANJ team can provide emotional support via

phone or chat, including a referral to a specific program or crisis counselor. People may also opt in for care messages delivered via mobile phone to help them cope with emotional stress on a longer-term, ongoing basis, according to the press release. In addition to the helpline and texting services, residents also have access to crisis counseling and virtual support groups. The MHANJ is offering a variety of support groups, including sessions for teachers, parents, seniors, healthcare workers and teens. The full schedule of groups can be found at https://www.mhanj.org/njhope/ “We want people to know they are not alone during these challenging and anxious times,” New Jersey Human Services Commissioner Carole Johnson said. “Help is just a phone call or text away. We want to make it as convenient as possible for people to reach out and get assistance and support. Please reach out,” she said. “There is no doubt the country, and New Jersey in particular, are in the midst of a historic upsurge of physical and mental health issues,” said Carolyn Beauchamp, CEO of the Mental Health Association in New Jersey. “This is a crisis unlike anything we have ever seen before and we are proud to work with the New Jersey Department of Human Services to help the people of New Jersey and to guide them to the resources they need to get through this unprecedented crisis,” she said.

Established by the New Jersey Department of Human Services Division of Mental Health and Addiction Services, the mission of the New Jersey Hope and Healing Crisis Counseling Program is to assist individuals and communities in recovering from the effects of disasters through the provision of community-based outreach and psychoeducational services, according to the press release. This need is especially acute during the current COVID-19 pandemic, according to the press release. The program supports short-term interventions that involve the counseling goals of assisting affected individuals in understanding their current situation and reactions, mitigating stress, assisting in reviewing their recovery options, promoting the use or development of coping strategies, providing emotional support, and encouraging linkages with other individuals and agencies who may help in their recovery process. “As professionals in behavioral health, we at the MHANJ know all too well that emotional instability resulting from this crisis may cause distress, leading to poor decision-making, which in turn can lead to people more serious emotional issues or the overuse of alcohol and drugs,” Beauchamp said. “NJ MentalHealthCares, the new text line, crisis counselors and virtual support and discussion groups are all available to help.”

Freeholders end restrictions on public access to county buildings

P

ublic access restrictions that have been in place for several months at Monmouth County buildings during the 2020 coronavirus pandemic were lifted on July 6. Members of the public may enter buildings by appointment only, Monmouth County Board of Freeholders Director Thomas A. Arnone and Deputy Director Susan M. Kiley announced on July 1. Face coverings are required to be worn in county buildings and social distancing must be practiced, according to a press re-

lease from the county. During a press conference to announce the lifting of the restrictions, Arnone also spoke about the allocation of federal Coronavirus Aid, Relief and Economic Security Act funding to administer small business grants as well as the Monmouth ACTS (Assisting Communities Through Services) Financial Recovery Initiative and Task Force, according to the press release. The funding will be used to provide grants of up to $10,000 to businesses with up to 50 employees.

“We are looking to partner with an organization that will handle the entirety of the grant process, which we expect to be an entirely online application process to efficiently handle the grant applications,” Arnone said. “Businesses should start to put together their receipts for expenses they have incurred because of the pandemic, including rental expenses and utility expenses. Having your paperwork prepared will give you a head start when the process begins,” he said.

Kiley explained that residents, many of whom are traditionally self-sufficient, are finding themselves in need of public resources and clear direction on how to access those resources, according to the press release. “The intent of the county’s Financial Recovery Initiative (FRI) is to equally meet residents’ needs in the most effective and helpful way possible,” Kiley said. “The FRI brings together and builds upon the strong foundation of public and community organizations, which has already been established through Monmouth ACTS and its Financial Empowerment Hub. “The initiative includes a clearinghouse, which will provide residents with access to information about the many public-private programs and benefits that are becoming available almost daily from anchor organizations,” she said. Together with a key group of financial leaders, Kiley has established the FRI Task Force to assure a robust community outreach and communication effort to meet the needs of all residents and report to the public about progress. The task force will advise and support the FRI, according to the press release. Arnone concluded the July 1 press conference by stating, “As county buildings and businesses reopen to the public, we have to act responsibly by practicing social distancing. Right now, social distancing is the best defense we have against the spread of COVID-19.” For more Monmouth County news updates and information regarding the COVID-19 situation, visit www.visitmonmouth. com

Freeholders approve emergency repairs at county jail By MARK ROSMAN Managing Editor

T

he Monmouth County Board of Freeholders have awarded an emergency contract to Unitemp Inc. for the replacement of six McQuay rooftop units for the Monmouth County Correctional Institution, Freehold Township. The freeholders took the action during a meeting on June 25. According to a resolution, between May 1 and June 1, six rooftop heating, ventilation and air conditioning units at the Monmouth County Correctional Institution failed and are no longer repairable due to age and an inability to locate replacement parts. The freeholders said the failure of the equipment necessitated inmates being relo-

cated out of four pods in the maximum security facility due to the associated health and safety concerns pertaining to temperature and airflow, and the resulting relocation is maximizing the capacity of inmates in the remaining pods. According to the resolution, Unitemp has already been cleared to work at the jail and any further delay would result in additional health and safety concerns. County Administrator Teri O’Connor approved the work that was needed on an emergency basis and recommended that a contract be awarded to Unitemp for the purchase and installation of two Dakin 25ton rooftop units and four Dakin 16-ton rooftop units at the jail, according to the resolution. The emergency contract is in the amount of $486,380 and the funds are available in

the 2020 budget. In other business, the county is expanding its inventory of open space by purchasing land on Strickland Road in Freehold Township for additions to the Manasquan River Greenway. The freeholders passed a resolution authorizing the acquisition of two lots totaling 8.75 acres known as the Arbeitman property at a cost of $420,000. The Monmouth County Board of Recreation Commissioners deemed it necessary and advisable to acquire and preserve the land for open space preservation, natural resources conservation, and public park and recreation purposes, and recommended the purchase of the properties, according to the resolution. The offer of purchase has been accepted, but is contingent upon a satisfactory

title review and environmental review of the properties, according to the resolution. The funds for the purchase are covered under the Monmouth County Open Space, Recreation, Floodplain Protection, Farmland and Historic Preservation Trust Fund. According to the Monmouth County Park System website, more than 480 acres along the Manasquan River have been acquired by the park system and are now protected in their natural state. The preserved open space provides river access for fishermen and boaters with canoes and other small water craft. Navigating sections of the river may be challenging and/or require numerous portages due to natural obstructions and fluctuating water levels, according to the website.

Axelrod announces high school AXE award winners The Axelrod Performing Arts Center, Ocean Township, in conjunction with its sponsors, local nonprofit Cabaret for Life and Kearny Bank, has announced the winners of the inaugural NJ High School AXE Awards. The awards were created to shine a light on students whose high school musicals were canceled due to the 2020 coronavirus pandemic, according to a press release. Jersey girl, Tony Award winner and Axelrod performer Laura Benanti announced and congratulated the winners in a special video. Benanti had previously expressed her shared disappointment for all the high

school musical cancellations around the country and launched #SunshineSongs on Twitter so high school musical performers could share their videos with her, according to the press release. The AXE award provides talented young student-actors a chance to shine by providing scholarship money. Seventy-two students from 32 high schools throughout Monmouth, Middlesex and Ocean counties submitted entries for the awards and a panel of theater professionals selected the finalists in each of six categories. Preliminary online voting was conducted for two weeks with more than 5,000 bal-

The award money provided by Cabaret for Life was in memory of Amy Fredericks, a local music director and teacher who frequently volunteered for the organization, according to the press release. ON THE ROAD PETER PERROTTA

2020 Lexus RC 350 F Sport AWD

I

f it looks and sounds like a hot car, is it truly a “hot” car? That’s a good question. The answer, of course, depends on who you ask. When it comes to the 2020 Lexus RC 350 F Sport, an all wheel drive coupe that is a sure head turner when you take it down the block, the good looking part of that equation is a certain slam dunk. The sound part is easy, too. When you put this coupe, introduced in 2014, in Peter Perrotta the “sports plus” driving mode it emits a heartwarming exhaust rumble when you accelerate that is quite frankly rather impressive. So, if you are asking me, the answer should be that this attractive sports car, the coupe version of the IS sedan, is certainly a “hot” performance car. However, there are those in the automotive press that give this Lexus high marks for its looks, craftsmanship and comfort, but stop short of patting it on the back as a sports performance coupe. However, for me, the 3.5 liter, V6 engine with a six speed automatic transmission that puts out 311 horsepower at 6,600 pound feet of torque has plenty sports performance in it. You may not win any Indy races with that powerplant, but it can certainly get you in a whole heap of trouble with your local law enforcement agents if you so chose to get heavy footed with this vehicle. The 0 to 60 clocking on this snazzy coupe is six seconds. Again, I’m not try-

ing to win the Grand Prix here. But, that is more than enough to get your heart pounding when doing an aggressive pass or just trying to accelerate onto the interstate. The folks at Consumer Reports say: “The various driving modes sharpen throttle and steering response, but the car’s weight ultimately compromises its agility.” Personally, I didn’t find that to be true. I ran this car aggressively through some tricky twists and turns from time to time and thought that it held up quite well. It sticks to the road with very little body lean and I never felt that the car was about to get away from me at any point. Over at Car and Driver, for comments under “high points” they said: “Fierce body work, surprisingly refined ride quality and spacious cockpit”. For “lows”: “Back seat is not spacious, contrived touchpad controller, should be quicker.” I agree on the back seat and the controller, but not on the “should be quicker” comment. Overall, Car and Driver stated, “The RC has the superficial traits of a sports car but lacks the athleticism.” I’m not sure what these guys were driving, but, sure if

you compare it to the AMG Mercedes line, or the M series BMWs, it’s not going to measure up. But, in reality, there aren’t many roads or circumstances where you can even use the power of this car to its full potential. So, what’s the point of those 500 to 600 horsepower stallions? Anyway, for the record, my test vehicle has a base price of $50,905. With added options and destination charges, the MSRP sticker price comes in at $57,785. The added options included: $2,725 for the Navigation/Mark Levinson Audio package; $1,160 for triple beam LED headlamps; $1,100 for a power moonroof; $500 for intuitive parking assist; $150 for an F Sport heated steering wheel and $220 for an all weather package that includes headlamp washers, windshield wiper deicer, water repellant front door glass and fast-response interior heating. While the exterior of the RC 350 is certainly an aggressive looking sports coupe, the interior is nicely refined. The ergonomics of the dash and all the controls is expensive looking and sporty at the same time. The front bucket seats are form fitting, firm and comfortable.

And, the Mark Levinson sound premium sound system is simply “off the hook”. It outfits this coupe with 17 speakers that are capable of pumping out 835 watts of premium surround sound. I was quite impressed with this audio system. The only knock is that the touchpad center console controller that links to the 10.3-inch color screen is at times finicky and clumsy to use when trying to control the phone, music selection or navigation. The voice command system, which bypasses the need for the touch pad controller, works fine, though. The EPA Department of Transportation fuel economy ratings for this vehicle are 21 miles per gallon overall – with a 24 mpg rating for highway driving and 18 for city driving. The EPA estimates that the annual fuel cost for operating this coupe to be about $2,300 per year as it uses about 4.8 gallons of gas per every 100 miles. This vehicle has not been rated by the government for its 5-star safety rating test. The RC coupe comes in an all wheel drive and rear wheel drive version. It’s available in a 300 model featuring a 2.0 liter 4 cylinder turbo engine that puts out 241 horsepower. There’s a 350 and 350 F Sport with the 3.5 liter, V6 that I drove. And, finally there is a top of the line F model that features a 5.9 liter, V8 that puts out 472 horsepower. The RC 350 I drove comes with loads of standard equipment, including: 19-inch split, five spoke wheels; F Sport grill; Bluetooth; Apple Car play and Android capability; a rear view camera and loads of the newest safety and technology equipment.

Operation HOPE directors outline benefits of equine-assisted therapy

A

Holmdel resident and a Freehold Township resident are bringing an equine-assisted therapy program to Monmouth County that will offer assistance to individuals who are dealing with mental health issues. Operation HOPE is directed by Brooke Lichter of Holmdel and Sara Velez of Freehold Township. They said the program focuses on providing equine-assisted psychotherapy to first responders and their family members. The program also facilitates equine-assisted activities and therapies to children, teenagers and adults who are dealing with mental health issues. “Anxiety, depression, trauma and posttraumatic stress disorder all share the challenge of disconnection from self, from oth-

er people and/or the community,” Lichter and Velez said. “By engaging with the therapeutic team of a mental health professional, a horse professional and one or more horses, we can impact and improve the physiology and the psychology of our clients, creating lasting change well beyond the therapeutic benefits of simply being with animals,” they said. According to Operation HOPE, Lichter and Velez are licensed social workers and certified through the Equine Assisted Growth and Learning Association (EAGLA) as equine specialists in mental health and learning. “Horses are majestic and beautiful animals,” Lichter and Velez said. “They are sensitive animals, compassionate, intuitive

and honest, and each has their own unique personality. These are just some of the reasons why horses make for great partners in therapy sessions. “Equine therapy is on the ground (not riding) and collaborative, joining the efforts of a licensed clinical mental health professional and a horse professional who work side by side with horses to reach the individual’s goals,” they said. “Horses mirror people’s emotions and this is what makes them so unique. Just the act of petting an animal releases Oxytocin, the feel good hormone, in the human and the horse and that is mutually beneficial. Horses are social in nature, respond to nonverbal communication and are extremely sensitive, therefore providing immediate feedback.”

Lichter and Velez said the benefits of equine-assisted therapy would include an increase in one’s ability to trust others, a decrease in stress and anxiety, increased self-acceptance and self-confidence/selfesteem, increased feelings of personal safety and an increase in a person’s ability to understand boundaries. They said the therapy helps to increase social skills, interpersonal interactions and social interactions, and leads to an increase of interest in attending school, while decreasing social withdrawal. “We are looking to open our doors to the brave first responders who have been essential during the coronavirus outbreak,” they said. Why have our customers chosen us over another window company? 1. Fibrex® Material Our Fibrex material was researched by Andersen en for 30 years before it was installed in even one home. Our Fibrex material is twice as strong as vinyl. 2. Unique Look Our window has the elegant look and strength of a wood window, but our Fibrex material doesn’t demand the same maintenance of wood.* 3. Accountability There’s no frustrating “middle man” to deal with. We manage the entire process–from building to installation to the warranty–on windows and patio doors.
