Local educator named county’s Teacher of the Year By STEVEN BASSIN Staff Writer

D

uring the spring of 2020, Christina Gauss received outstanding news. She was not permitted to announce it at the time, but Gauss, who teaches Spanish at Rumson-Fair Haven Regional High School, was told her hard work and purpose as an educator was being recognized by a statewide organization. Recently, Gauss was able share the news she received months ago when it was announced to the public she has been named Monmouth County’s Teacher of the Year for 2020-21 by the New Jersey School Boards Association (NJSBA). A virtual ceremony held on Aug. 26 revealed the names of the educators from New Jersey who have been honored by the NJSBA for the current academic year. “It’s a very special recognition and I am so grateful and humble to be named Teacher of the Year,” Gauss said in an interview. “I am happy to represent RumsonFair Haven Regional High School and the Monmouth Education Association.” “As a teacher, you become what you surround yourself with. My students, fellow teachers and the World Language Department inspire me to be the best educator I can be and have supported me in so many different ways,” she said. Gauss is the first teacher from the regional high school or from the Rumson School District or the Fair Haven Public Schools to be named the NJSBA’s Monmouth County Teacher of the Year. She was honored as the high school’s Teacher of the Year for 2019-20 and was encouraged by Superintendent of Schools Debra Gulick to apply for the Monmouth County Teacher of the Year honor. Gauss took up Gulick’s suggestion and submitted an application for the honor that included a 10-page essay. Gauss has been passionate about the Spanish language and the culture of Spain since she traveled to Barcelona, Spain, when she was in high school. In college, she traveled to Mexico to visit her sister who was working for a nonprofit organization. Gauss returned to Spain to study for a semester during her junior year in college.

Rumson-Fair Haven Regional High School Spanish teacher Christina Gauss has been honored by the New Jersey School Boards Association as Monmouth County’s Teacher of the Year for 2020-21.

She earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in Spanish and international relations from Bucknell University and a secondary education certification from Millersville University, before earning a master’s degree in Spanish from Rutgers University. Gauss said she chose to teach because she wanted to help students learn more about different cultures and linguistics. Doing so can broaden their education and help them when they enter a profession. During the first five years of her career, Gauss taught at Lancaster County Day

School in Lancaster, Pa. She then taught at Ridge High School in Somerset County for three years. Gauss came to Rumson-Fair Haven Regional in 2000 and said she takes the school’s mission statement – “Our mission is to empower all of our students with the tools to find their passions and thrive as knowledgeable, confident, resilient, creative and compassionate citizens of a global community” – to heart. “I’m a lifelong learner. It’s a passion of mine to share my experiences and teach

my students tools to help them get to the next stage of their schooling and find their own passions,” she said. Gauss left teaching in 2004 to raise her three children, but she remained abreast of what was going on in Spanish culture by communicating with friends in Spain and researching how foreign languages were continuing to be taught. When she returned to the high school in 2009, Gauss admits it was a “culture shock” at first; learning technology platforms teachers were using, but she eventually got up to speed. “We are taking more of a communicative approach, working on cultural and linguistic tools students can use in the real world,” Gauss said. “Cultural competence helps engage students more and will help them participate in a more global society.” Gauss said the teachers in the World Language Department work cooperatively to come up with ideas to use with their students. Seth Herman, the supervisor of World Languages, Fine and Performing Arts, Financial Literacy and English as a Second Language, has worked with Gauss at the high school and was thrilled when he heard she had been honored by the NJSBA. The two educators have taken students on trips to Guatemala, Spain and Peru, and Herman said he and Gauss have hosted international students. “This is the recognition of all the years of hard work she has put in,” Herman said. “She works with a purpose at home and at school. She instills concepts in all phases to help students learn about the Spanish language and its culture. Everything she does in the classroom is geared around helping students become true global citizens.” Gauss was recognized for her accomplishment by the regional Board of Education on Sept. 1. She was honored by her fellow educators during a professional development day. “The community has done an amazing job highlighting my accomplishments,” Gauss said. “Former students, teachers and colleagues have reached out to me to congratulate me on the honor. I’m just in awe of it all.”

Cultural center to debut Basie exhibit with Sept. 25 event

T

he T. Thomas Fortune Cultural Center, 94 Drs James Parker Blvd., Red Bank, will open its doors and front lawn on Sept. 25 for “A Love Letter to Count Basie: From The Great Migration to The Harlem Renaissance,” an exhibit that illuminates the Red Bank-born musical giant William “Count” Basie (1904-84). The exhibit will also pay homage to some of the most important eras from the Great Migration to the Harlem Renaissance, according to a press release. A VIP opening reception will be held on the center’s front lawn. Attendees will be escorted inside the center to view the exhibit and featured items from 6-9 p.m. Morgan Stanley is the lead sponsor of an educational experience that promotes excellence in black history and culture, according to the press release. More than 1,000 Basie artifacts are archived at the Institute of Jazz Studies at Rutgers University, Newark. This is the first time the collection – known formally as the William “Count” and Catherine Basie papers and artifacts – will be shared publicly since its 2018 acquisition by the institute. The collection is the only body of materials that traces directly to the Basie family and is one of the institute’s largest collections, according to the press release. “This exhibit is especially fitting considering the racial tension we are experi-

“This exhibit is especially fitting considering the racial tension we are experiencing in the nation. Count Basie’s music broke through racial barriers and brought people together during a time of lawful segregation in America.” — Gilda Rogers encing in the nation,” said Gilda Rogers, vice president of the T. Thomas Fortune Foundation. “Count Basie’s music broke through racial barriers and brought people together during a time of lawful segregation in America,” Rogers said. Visitors will learn how Basie used his celebrity as an activist, including standing on a picket line in late 1963 as black and white students demanded that Florida State University integrate, according to the press release. Photographer, artist and former Red Bank resident Alan Burgess, founder of Benduka Arts, Los Angeles, will present a collection of photography exploring scenes from Asbury Park to Ghana. Burgess was commissioned by the T. Thomas Fortune Cultural Center to create

a Harlem literary mural collage, reflecting the Harlem Renaissance that occurred in the early 20th century. Burgess is also a contributing writer of the Harlem Renaissance narrative of the exhibit, which shapes the segregated times during which Basie made a name for himself. The VIP reception for “A Love Letter to Count Basie: From The Great Migration to The Harlem Renaissance,” will take place from 6-9 p.m. Sept. 25. Tickets are available online for a $50 donation and include a preview of the exhibit, a souvenir book and light fare with beverages. Visit www.tthomasfortuneculturalcenter.org to purchase tickets. All attendees are required to purchase tickets in advance and select the time slot during which they will attend. Visitors are

required to wear a face mask and will not be allowed to view the exhibit without being escorted inside the center, according to the press release. “A Love Letter to Count Basie: From The Great Migration to The Harlem Renaissance” was created in conjunction with the Institute for Jazz Studies and is sponsored by Morgan Stanley, OceanFirst Bank, Investors Bank, Denholtz Properties, the Community YMCA, Monmouth Arts, Two River Theater and Detour Gallery. For more information, email info@ thomasfortuneculturalcenter.org Before the 2020 coronavirus pandemic began in New Jersey, musicians, artists, civic leaders and politicians gathered at the T. Thomas Fortune Cultural Center and kicked off “2020: Year of Basie,” a celebration of Count Basie, by sharing thoughts about the Grammy winner, according to the press release. Clarence Banks, who joined the Count Basie Orchestra shortly before Basie’s death in 1984, was on hand to share recollections of his interactions with the bandleader and composer. Dee Askew, who manages the orchestra, was also at the event and spoke. Dorthaan Kirk, WBGO’s “First Lady” of Jazz, who was named a 2020 NEA Jazz Master, wrote a “Love Letter to Basie” that was shared at the event.

The contest is open to high school students who reside in Monmouth County and/or attend a high school in Monmouth County. Students are allowed to work alone or to form groups of no more than three members, according to the press release. the Atlantic Hub, Mayor Pasquale Menna said, “Red Bank is pleased to partner with the Monmouth County Board of Health to provide public health services to our residents and businesses. “The agreement is in line with my long-held belief that public health should be a function of county government. This accomplishes that goal. More municipal services should be standardized and undertaken by the county since all municipalities contribute to county tax levies. “In addition, the agreement with the Monmouth County Board of Health will realize substantial and much-needed savings to the borough without any diminution in public health. “I thank the Monmouth County Regional Health Commission for the many years they serviced Red Bank, but the overriding need for cost savings and county coordination dictated that we move in this direction,” Menna said. Red Bank Business Administrator Ziad Shehady told the Atlantic Hub that “this transition from the current provider, the Monmouth County Regional Health Commission, will represent a nearly 45% savings annually to Red Bank taxpayers. There will be no reduction in services and some additional benefits may be provided to residents and businesses throughout the year.” “By joining the Monmouth County Health Department, Red Bank’s residents now have access to the county’s public health team and the services they offer,” Monmouth County Freeholder Deputy Director Susan M. Kiley, who is the liaison to the county health department, was quoted as saying in the press release. “The county will also provide many services in Red Bank that residents may not be aware of or see on a regular basis, such as food inspections as part of its program to help protect food and drinking

water supplies and ensure compliance with environmental health regulations, related to air, water, and noise and nuisance control,” Kiley said. “We welcome Red Bank to the Monmouth County Board of Health,” Freeholder Director Thomas A. Arnone was quoted as saying in the press release. “This expansion of the county health department is another example of how shared services offered by county government can help a municipality while helping Monmouth County continue its leadership role in public health.” The health department is overseen by the Monmouth County Board of Health. Established in 1978, the board is composed of five members who are appointed by the Monmouth County Board of Freeholders. The freeholder board’s function is to establish policy and govern the services provided by the Monmouth County Health Department. The board’s mission is to empower residents of Monmouth County to achieve optimum health through the provision of essential public health services, according to the press release. The MCHD serves as a field office of the New Jersey Department of Health and the New Jersey Department of Environmental Protection and enforces the provisions of the state sanitary code and regulations, as well as local codes and ordinances that protect public health. The department also delivers public health services as required by state law and provides leadership in response to public health issues and threats, according to the press release. For more information about the services provided by the Monmouth County Health Department, visit www.visitmonmouth.com or call 732-431-7456. Count Basie Center readies new Basie Center Cinemas for October opening RED BANK – Directors of the Count Basie Center for the Arts, Monmouth Street, announced the not-for-profit performing arts organization has assumed operations of the White Street cinema in Red Bank with the intention of opening as the rebranded Basie Center Cinemas in October. The announcement came a week after Gov. Phil Murphy said New Jersey’s movie theaters would be permitted to reopen at the lesser of 150 persons or 25% of capacity. At those numbers, Basie Center Cinemas’ auditoriums will hold 51 and 33 people, respectively, according to a press release. Movie theaters in the Garden State had been closed since mid-March when the 2020 coronavirus pandemic began. “We were set to announce the Basie Center Cinemas project in April, but we had to put everything on hold,” said Adam Philipson, president and CEO, Count Basie Center for the Arts. “We are grateful Gov. Murphy has allowed movie theaters to operate at a reduced capacity, which will allow us to provide a safe, socially distanced cinema experience for patrons beginning next month,” he said. “I am very excited for the Count Basie Center for the Arts and their new opening of Basie Center Cinemas,” said state Sen. Vin Gopal (D-Monmouth). “People are very eager to once again safely have an entertaining night out. This experience is a step forward in bringing normalcy back to the community, while still proceeding with health and safety as our No. 1 priorities.” Under the direction of Basie Center Executive Vice President and General Manager Izzy Sackowitz, Basie Center Cinemas will feature independent and major studio releases, film lectures and workshops, film festivals and family programming, and will

Puzzle answers

act as an annex location for the Basie Center’s arts and education programs, according to the press release. Late-night showings of “The Rocky Horror Picture Show,” a long-standing tradition at the theater, will continue, according to the press release. Basie Center Cinemas will debut in strict accordance with state social distancing mandates: • The facilities’ two theaters will hold 51 or 33 people, respectively; • Patrons will be required to wear a face mask at all times, except when eating or

drinking; • Seats will be sold in sets of two and four, with at least 6 feet of space surrounding seats in all directions. Single seats will be available as well; • The lobby will be retrofitted to facilitate contact-free ticketing and concessions; • Theaters will be disinfected between showings; • Restroom occupancy will be limited to one patron at a time. “Fans of independent film can rest easy knowing social distancing is very much possible in this complex and that cinemas

typically operate at reduced capacities to begin with,” Sackowitz said. “In addition to deep cleanings between each screening and again nightly, usable seats will be properly distanced, foot traffic will be relegated to one direction, and concessions and ticketing will be completely touchless. “The audience for independent films is smaller than the summer blockbuster crowd, which means the Basie Center Cinemas experience can be safe and enjoyable for all,” Sackowitz said.

County officials launch Stigma-Free Monmouth website

T

he Monmouth County Board of Freeholders, in collaboration with the Division of Behavioral Health, has announced the launch of the StigmaFree Monmouth website. The Monmouth County Stigma-Free Action Committee’s initiative has been developed to help spread the message for those who suffer from behavioral health illnesses and substance use disorders, according to a press release from the county. “In 2019, New Jersey suffered from 3,021 overdose deaths, with 187 of those deaths occurring in Monmouth County,” said Freeholder Deputy Director Susan M. Kiley, liaison to the Division of Behavioral

Health. “From Jan. 1 through July 31 of this year, New Jersey has had 1,834 overdose deaths and 111 of those were in Monmouth County. This movement has been gaining momentum and the launch of the stigmafree website helps advocate awareness and education about this notable health concern,” Kiley said. The Monmouth County Stigma-Free Action Committee believes every individual deserves to be treated with respect and that everyone should be able to get help without fear, according to the press release. The stigma-free initiative aspires to reduce the stigmas associated with mental

illnesses and substance use disorders. Monmouth County and other stigmafree zones are raising awareness of the diseases and disorders to help create support for individuals who need to pursue treatment, according to the press release. “We are proud to announce Monmouth County has taken action and has joined the stigma-free movement against mental illness and substance use disorders,” Freeholder Director Thomas A. Arnone said. “The Monmouth County Division of Behavioral Health has launched the website Monmouth County Proud to Be Stigma-Free, which will assist residents in need of help and resources,” he said.

“According to the National Alliance on Mental Illness, one in five Americans will be affected by mental health conditions,” Kiley said. “A negative stigma toward those with this illness or substance use is toxic to the individual’s mental health. “Stigmas are 100% curable. Monmouth County residents need to be kind and have empathy toward those with behavioral health illnesses and encourage them to seek treatment,” she said. New Jersey to provide opioid overdose antidote for free from Sept. 24-26

G

ov. Phil Murphy and Human Services Commissioner Carole Johnson have announced New Jersey will offer the opioid overdose reversal drug naloxone (commonly called Narcan) for free to residents at participating pharmacies throughout the state from Sept. 24-26. According to a press release, as part of the Murphy Administration’s continued effort to combat the opioid crisis, New Jerseyans can visit participating pharmacies and anonymously obtain naloxone for free with no prescription and no appointment. Each naloxone pack contains two doses. The free naloxone will be available at 322 pharmacies, including several locations of Acme, CVS, Rite Aid, SavOn, ShopRite, Stop & Shop, Walgreens, Walmart, Weis Markets and independent

pharmacies. For participating pharmacies, visit nj.gov/humanservices/stopoverdoses This will be the Murphy Administration’s second free naloxone distribution to residents. Human Services in June 2019 oversaw a free naloxone distribution at pharmacies that led to residents receiving 32,000 doses of naloxone, according to the press release. “The ongoing opioid epidemic continues to devastate communities across our state,” said Murphy. “By expanding access to Naloxone, New Jerseyans will have this lifesaving medication readily available to help those who may be suffering from an overdose.” “This is all about saving lives,” Johnson said. “We are continuing to find innovative

ways to combat this epidemic that has taken far too many lives. We urge everyone to visit a participating pharmacy to get a free pack of this overdose reversal drug because, quite frankly, you never know when you are going to need it to save a life.” The naloxone will be distributed on a first-come, first-serve basis while supplies last, according to the press release. Naloxone can reverse overdoses from opioids by blocking the effects of opioids on the brain. Those who obtain naloxone will also be given information regarding addiction treatment and recovery, according to the press release. Participating pharmacies have standing orders from the Department of Health for dispensing of naloxone. The distribution is a Human Services program approved by

the New Jersey Board of Pharmacy. Human Services has also distributed 53,000 free doses of naloxone to police departments, 11,352 free doses to EMS teams, 1,200 free doses to shelters for individuals experiencing homelessness and 400 free doses to libraries. Those who pick up free naloxone will be given information regarding the state’s addiction treatment helpline, 1-844-ReachNJ, a 24-hour-a-day, seven-day-a-week addictions help line, where people facing addiction or their friends and family members can get immediate assistance and support from live, New Jersey-based, trained addiction counselors. ReachNJ assists callers regardless of their insurance status, according to the press release.

Interested participants must register for the forum at lwvsmc.org by clicking on the big red “Forums and Webinars Register” button and choosing “Hot Topic: The Truth about Vote-by-Mail.” All are invited to participate. A chat function will enable everyone to ask questions, according to a press release.

Girls on the Run of Central New Jersey (GOTRCNJ) is offering virtual and at-home programming options for girls in third through eighth grade for the fall 2020 season. Virtual, online practices will be held with three options available: schools where their girl attends (if available), the county of residence, or a day and time that work for a girl’s schedule within Camden, Middlesex, Monmouth, Ocean and Somerset counties. The virtual programming will be delivered by trained coaches with lessons that mirror the in-person Girls on the Run program. The programming will include physical activity and social-emotional learning, providing girls with an opportunity to still build meaningful connections with their peers and caring adult role models. The program fee is $125 and includes 16 virtual lessons led by GOTR trained

coaches, journal, program, T-shirt, 5K medal and end-of-season certificate all shipped to their homes. Teams are limited to 12 girls. Registration is available at www.gotrcnj.org For additional information on the virtual fall program, contact Executive Director Donna York at donna.york@girlsontherun. org or 908-642-4321. On Sept. 22 at 7 p.m., the League of Women Voters will hold a webinar about voting in the time of COVID entitled “The Truth About Vote By Mail.” Guest speakers from the NYU Brennan Center and the Monmouth County Board of Elections will discuss the safety of voting by mail. The nonpartisan panel will explore the historic evidence and explain the safeguards in place to protect the security of the ballot and the accuracy of the count.

Ride a cycling course of your choosing to help support and raise funds for more than 26,000 Special Olympics New Jersey athletes. This year’s route and mileage are up to each participant. From Sept. 24 to Oct. 24, register and complete your ride. All registered participants will receive a long sleeve t-shirt, ride bib and finisher medal. Fundraising incentives are available to those who reach specific milestones.

New Jersey Blood Services, which provides blood for local patients, is looking for volunteers whose tasks at blood drives will include assisting donors with registration and/or at the refreshment area. No medical background necessary. Must have transportation. All training is provided. Details: Call or text Sharon Zetts at 732-850-8906, Monday through Thursday, 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Residents struggling with substance use issues may call 1-844-ReachNJ to speak with counselors ready to offer assistance 24 hours a day, seven days a week. RBR Hall of Famer, NFL punter dies after struggle with mental illness By MARK ROSMAN Managing Editor

T

he life of one of the finest athletes to ever come out of Red Bank Regional High School will be celebrated on Oct. 24. Gregory H. Montgomery Jr., 55, who played college football at Michigan State University and went on to a nine-year professional career in the National Football League, died on Aug. 23 in Michigan. According to an obituary posted by Metcalf and Jonkhoff Funeral Service, Grand Rapids, Mich., Montgomery succumbed to mental illness, which he had battled for many years. The former pro athlete had shared his struggle with bipolar disorder to help stop the stigma surrounding mental illness, according to the obituary. Montgomery’s life will be celebrated from 2-5 p.m. Oct. 24 at Fox Hill, 62 Crest Drive, Little Silver. Montgomery, the son of Gregory and Diane Montgomery, was raised in Little Silver and Shrewsbury. His first love was hockey and he also excelled in football, baseball, soccer and golf, according to his obituary. At Red Bank Regional, Montgomery was a two-sport varsity athlete; he pitched for the Bucs’ baseball team, and he was a middle linebacker on the football team who, because of an injury, became a punter and kicker. It was in football where Montgomery would make his mark on the collegiate and professional levels. Montgomery received a football scholarship to Penn State University. According to his obituary, he was the first punter to receive a full scholarship to Penn State under Coach Joe Paterno. After one season at Penn State, Montgomery transferred to his father’s alma mater, Michigan State. As a Spartan, Montgomery was named All-American twice, All-Big 10 three times, and eventually the All-Time Best Punter in Michigan State history. He played for the Spartans with his brother, Steve; recorded an 86-yard punt; and was the holder for the winning field goal in Michigan State’s 20-17 victory over the University of Southern California

in the Rose Bowl on Jan. 1, 1988. Montgomery became a professional football player when he was drafted by the Houston Oilers in the third round (No. 72

overall) of the 1988 NFL draft and signed a contract with the team. He played for the Oilers for six seasons (1988-93) and later with the Detroit Lions

(1994) and the Baltimore Ravens (199697). He was named All-Pro and played in the 1994 Pro Bowl. In a nine-year career, Montgomery punted 524 times and averaged 43.6 yards per punt. The NFL Players Association recognized Montgomery twice for its Mackey Award as the leading punter in the American Football Conference. According to his obituary, after retiring as a player, Montgomery enjoyed coaching punters from the high school level to the NFL level. He coached at Michigan State and helped Coach Nick Saban’s players at Louisiana State University and at the University of Alabama. Saban was the defensive coach at Michigan State when Montgomery played for the Spartans and the two formed a friendship that endured over the ensuing decades. The Atlantic Hub reached out to Saban, who is the head coach at Alabama, on Sept. 4 and the Crimson Tide coach responded by saying, “Greg was a wonderful player for us at Michigan State and someone we then drafted while I was with the Houston Oilers. “We had a wonderful friendship for many years. Greg would come back and work our kicking camps year after year. “He was a fantastic teacher and someone who really connected with the kids. He is easily one of the best punters on any team I have ever coached and a great guy. Our thoughts and prayers go out to Greg’s family, friends and teammates,” Saban said. Among the honors Montgomery received was being inducted into the Red Bank Regional High School Hall of Fame. The Gregory H. Montgomery Jr. Foundation for Ultimate Growth has been established to help spread awareness, education and resources for individuals who are conflicted with the complexities of achieving proper mental health and wellness, and those who love them. Memorial donations may be made at the Go Fund Me account that has been created in Montgomery’s name, The Gregory H. Montgomery Jr. Foundation, or mailed to The Gregory H. Montgomery Jr. Foundation, care of Margot Moran, 5899 Fountain Drive, Naples, FL 34119.

“He is easily one of the best punters on any team I have ever coached and a great guy.” — Nick Saban
