Former Eatontown police chief will head SPCA enforcement efforts

A

former Eatontown police chief has been named the new chief of the Monmouth County Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (MCSPCA), Monmouth County Prosecutor Christopher J. Gramiccioni announced.

Michael D. Goldfarb of Middletown will serve as the chief of law enforcement and will be responsible for overseeing the enforcement of animal cruelty cases in the county, according to Gramiccioni.

Goldfarb succeeds Ross Licitra, who has been the MCSPCA’s chief of law enforcement since May 2015.

Licitra is stepping down from the position after winning a seat on the Monmouth County Board of Freeholders in the Nov. 3 election, according to the press release.

He will join the county’s governing body in January.

Licitra will continue in his position as the executive director of the MCSPCA. Goldfarb’s law enforcement career began in 1992 as

a patrolman with the Eatontown Police Department. He advanced through the ranks and was eventually promoted to the rank of police chief in 2007, according to a press release from the Monmouth County Prosecutor’s Office.

Goldfarb served as Eatontown’s police chief for 10 years, until retiring in 2018, after 25 years of service to the community.

Trinity Hall trustees announce new head of school

T

he Trinity Hall Board of Trustees has announced the appointment of Mary Kate Blaine as the second head of school, effective July 1.

Blaine was hired after a national search and will succeed Mary R. Mahon Sciarrillo, the founding head of school, who will retire after the current school year, according to a press release.

Trinity Hall, which is based in Tinton Falls, is an independent all-girls school that educates young women in the Catholic tradition, according to the press release.

“As the founding head, my future will always include Trinity Hall. I have been blessed to be part of Trinity Hall’s early chapters and look forward to enjoying the next chapter of my life in retirement,” Sciarrillo was quoted

as saying in the press release.

“Trinity Hall is poised to enter its next stage of growth and I share the community’s excitement in continuing to build on our strong foundation under Ms. Blaine’s leadership,” she said.

Blaine has served as the principal at Georgetown Visitation Preparatory School, an all-girls Catholic high school in Washington, D.C., since 2013.

She previously held the role of Chief of Staff to the Superintendent of Catholic Schools for the Archdiocese of New York, according to the press release.

Blaine began her career in education as a social studies teacher at the Notre Dame School of Manhattan, an all-

girls Catholic high school in New York City, where she later served as social studies department chair and director of curriculum development.

“Ms. Blaine’s proven commitment to all girls’ education and her experience as an educator, administrator and leader allow her to truly understand Trinity Hall’s mission and vision, and our hopes and dreams for our future,” Board of Trustees Chairwoman Victoria Gmelich wrote in a letter to the Trinity Hall community.

The search for Trinity Hall’s second head of school was conducted over 16 months with the support of Wickenden Associates, a national education-focused executive search firm.

The effort was led by Board of Trustees Vice Chairwoman and Head of School Search Committee Chairwoman Miriam Tort.

During the fall, finalists for the position visited the school’s campus and were interviewed by faculty members, staff members, trustees, parents and students, according to the press release.

In August 2018, Goldfarb joined the MCSPCA Prosecutor’s Office Law Enforcement Division as a humane law enforcement officer. In March 2019, he was promoted to lieutenant of humane law enforcement.

Goldfarb is a lifelong resident of Middletown and resides in the township with his wife and family.

“As I continue in my role as the executive director of the Monmouth County SPCA, Michael and I will continue this mission, always remembering the importance of animal welfare,” he said.

Also promoted during a recent ceremony was Michael Magliozzo, a 25-year law enforcement veteran who retired from the Monmouth County Prosecutor’s Office earlier this year as a detective sergeant.

Magliozzo was promoted to lieutenant and will work alongside Goldfarb, according to the press release.

Using science to bring back iconic American chestnut trees

B

y the time the famous lyrics, “Chestnuts roasting on an open fire, Jack Frost nipping at your nose …” were penned in 1945, most of the magnificent American chestnut forests in the eastern United States were gone, the victims of a blight that would eventually kill some four billion trees.

In today’s terms, it would be a pandemic … one far more deadly to American chestnuts than COVID-19 to humans.

More than a century after the majority of American chestnut trees were wiped out, those who love the iconic species are hoping modern science and technology – including genetic engineering and biological controls – will bring them back.

“We are talking decades and centuries to restore a species,” said Sara Fitzsimmons, director of restoration for the American Chestnut Foundation, a North Carolina-based nonprofit organization working on a chestnut comeback.

“It’s going to be a long slog and we are going to need a lot of people planting trees,” she said.

For thousands of years, the American chestnut (Castanea dentata) dominated Eastern forests – including those in New Jersey – growing upward of 100 feet tall, with trunks as wide as 10 feet in diameter.

Each fall the chestnut trees’ sweet nuts reliably blanketed forest floors, providing a bountiful harvest for wildlife and people.

“None of these three B’s can restore a species in isolation,” noted Fitzsimmons.

But used together, they may be able to bring back the American chestnut.

During a time when many American forests are under stress from invasive insects, invasive non-native plants, diseases, over-abundant deer and climate change, the success of the 3BUR program has implications beyond American chestnut trees.

“It’s not just about the chestnut right now,” said Fitzsimmons. “We are setting a template for the restoration of other native species. Yes, there is reason to restore the American chestnut on its own, but there are a lot of other species that will need restoration.”

Monmouth County Planning Board presents 2020 merit awards On behalf of the Board of Freeholders, the Monmouth County Planning Board presented three organizations with 2020 merit awards during a virtual meeting held on Dec. 21.

“The Monmouth County Board of Freeholders and the Planning Board are pleased to award three outstanding honorees who have made significant contributions to planning in Monmouth County,” said Freeholder Lillian G. Burry, the county governing body’s liaison to the Planning Board.

“Through partnerships, redevelopment, education, public outreach, resiliency, stakeholder cooperation and coordination, the Planning Board has recognized those who are working tirelessly to keep Mon-
