Schild pitches Eagles past Lions in SCT quarterfinals By STEVEN BASSIN Staff Writer
I
t was a week many baseball fans across Middletown had been waiting for during the past two years. The Middletown South and Middletown North high school baseball teams renewed their rivalry on the diamond with a three-game set during the past week. The third game, played on May 22, would determine which school was going to advance to the semifinals of the 2021 Shore Conference Tournament. The Eagles and the Lions split the first
two games of their series. The winner of the May 22 contest would remain alive in the conference tournament and take home the Richard Veth-Walter Woods Memorial Trophy. The game was played at Rich Veth Field at Middletown North and Middletown South’s Ben Schild pitched a complete game as the Eagles (13-5) defeated the Lions, 3-0, to advance to the semifinals of the conference tournament. “It’s a really nostalgic day,” Middletown South Coach Chris LeMore said after the game. “To have the opportunity to be in a ri-
valry game and have the chance to advance in the Shore Conference Tournament is a credit to the players. I’m really proud of the way they battled. We have continued to climb the staircase every day and put ourselves in position to win big games,” he said. Schild was brilliant on the hill for the Eagles as he outdueled Middletown North’s ace Danny Frontera. The Middletown South sophomore righthander allowed three hits and struck out seven Lions to secure his first career complete game shutout. The only time the Lions (10-5) had two
runners on base was in the sixth inning with one out, but Schild “kicked it into another gear” by retiring the next two batters to escape the jam. “I felt really good going into that inning,” Schild said after the game. “As soon as they got a couple of runners on, I knew I had to lock in, throw strikes and make good pitches to get my team back in the dugout.” Schild’s gem earned him the 2021 Richard Veth-Walter Woods MVP Award as he became the second straight Middletown

County honors Gramiccioni as prosecutor prepares to leave office By MARK ROSMAN Managing Editor
C
hristopher Gramiccioni, who has served as Monmouth County’s prosecutor since July 2012, will step down from the office on June 1. In a letter to Gov. Phil Murphy, Gramiccioni wrote, “It has been one of my life’s greatest honors to serve as prosecutor and chief law enforcement office of this fine county for most of the past decade. I am truly grateful to you and Gov. (Chris) Christie for the support your administrations have shown our law enforcement community. “Please know that I stand at the ready to assist my successor in any transition deemed necessary. The true testament to a fine organization is that it can function effectively through change. “The Office of the Monmouth County Prosecutor is in good shape to handle these winds of change,” Gramiccioni wrote. During a meeting of the Monmouth County Board of County Commissioners in Freehold Borough on May 13, the members of the county’s governing body recognized Gramiccioni for his service as prosecutor. Reading from a proclamation, Commissioner Lillian Burry said Gramiccioni was named Monmouth County’s acting prosecutor in July 2012. He served with that title until he was confirmed as prosecutor in August 2016 during the administration of Republican Gov. Chris Christie. With his current appointment nearing an end, Gramiccioni made the decision to step down. It will fall to Murphy, who is a Democrat, to nominate a new prosecutor. Gramiccioni’s tenure as prosecutor included his deployment to Afghanistan with American armed forces during 2014.
Gramiccioni, a lieutenant commander in the U.S. Navy Reserve, served a ninemonth tour of duty and assisted with the transition of power to the Afghan government. The county commissioners’ proclamation commended Gramiccioni for his “commitment and dedication” to Monmouth County. Gramiccioni offered praise and credit to the employees in the prosecutor’s office “who work behind the scenes to make things happen.” Commissioner Ross Licitra, who retired from the prosecutor’s office at about the time Gramiccioni was beginning his tenure there, spoke about the office’s connection with the Monmouth County Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (MCSPCA). Following his career in the prosecutor’s office, Licitra joined the MCSPCA and oversaw the agency’s animal welfare enforcement efforts. At present, Licitra is the executive director of the MCSPCA. “Prosecutor Gramiccioni’s acceptance of the MCSPCA into the prosecutor’s office set the bar for New Jersey for the enforcement of animal welfare laws,” Licitra said. Licitra said state legislators followed the lead of Gramiccioni – who as Monmouth County’s top law enforcement officer brought animal welfare under his purview – and enacted a law which did the same in prosecutor’s offices throughout the rest of New Jersey. Christie signed a bill into law that moved the law enforcement powers related to animal cruelty cases from the New Jersey Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals to the various county prosecutor’s offices.

Monmouth announces emergency rental assistance program
T
he Monmouth County Board of County Commissioners has announced that an emergency rental assistance program, Monmouth County ERAP, is accepting applications. The purpose of the program is to prevent evictions and homelessness by providing rental assistance for eligible households in Monmouth County making less than 80% of area median income in accordance with the federal program guidelines, according to a press release from the county.
“The Monmouth County ERAP will allow eligible households to receive up to $15,000 for rental costs incurred on or after March 13, 2020,” Commissioner Director Thomas A. Arnone said. “These costs can include rental arrears, prospective rent up to three months to prevent homelessness or housing instability, and household-related expenses such as relocation fees, late fees associated with rental payments and security deposits. “It is important for tenants and land-

lords to work together on the applications in order to receive the relief funds as quickly as possible,” Arnone said. Tenant eligibility requirements include: • Must reside in the rental unit in Monmouth County as their primary residence; • Must have experienced a loss of household income, incurred a significant cost or is facing a financial hardship due directly to COVID-19; • Must meet program income eligibility requirements;

CBA holds ceremonial groundbreaking for new facilities at campus
C
hristian Brothers Academy took a major step toward the newest round of campus upgrades on May 15. CBA is an independent, Catholic, college-preparatory school for young men in the Lincroft section of Middletown. The academy held its ceremonial groundbreaking for multiple new facilities, as part of the ongoing Forever CBA: Securing Our Mission capital campaign, according to a press release from the school. “Since the founding of CBA in 1959, building and enhancing the academic, athletic and cultural facilities has always been an important part of our strategic planning,” said President Brother Frank Byrne. “The campus plan at CBA has always been ‘in motion’ so we can build and enhance the facilities in order to meet the needs of our students.” The ceremony was held in between two buildings that will be reconstructed – the Round Barn and McKenna Hall. The new buildings will be built in the same footprint of the soon-to- be demolished structures, according to the press release. More than 100 alumni, parents and supporters were present at the ceremony, as they celebrated the upcoming construction and more than $11 million raised in the Forever CBA campaign. With a goal of $12 million, more than $6 million will be allocated for facilities upgrades. The remaining funds will help grow CBA’s scholarship offerings and school endowment, which currently stands at more than $30 million, according to the press release. “We would not be here today if not for the generosity of our donors, parents, board members and alumni, who have unselfishly supported this capital campaign,” said Don Norkus, chairman of the Forever CBA campaign. “It is exciting that construction will begin shortly, but we are not at the finish line yet and look forward to reaching the $12 million goal and completing the remaining projects,” he said. The Round Barn and McKenna Hall were original structures on CBA’s 157-acre campus, left over from the former Whitney Greentree Stables that had occupied the property along Newman Springs Road (Route 520), according to the press release. The Round Barn, which originally trained racehorses, was converted into a practice facility for the academy’s running teams. To that end, the new Tom Heath Round ) Barn will be a state-of-the-art track facility, equipped with a synthetic running surface, energy efficient lighting, radiant heat and roof ventilation, a multipurpose practice infield, a classroom and restroom facilities,
according to the press release. McKenna Hall, named after CBA’s first principal Brother Bernard McKenna, will be a two-story building that will serve a variety of academic and extracurricular purposes. Two additional athletic facilities will be built during this phase of the construction: the Sheehan Track and Field Complex, and a soccer and lacrosse complex. The new Sheehan Track and Field Complex will feature an eight-lane track that incorporates a natural grass infield.
The facility will provide enhanced spectator viewing, including accessible bleachers. A new scoreboard, sound system and equipment shed will complete the facility, according to the press release. The soccer and lacrosse complex will be visible from Newman Springs Road and will replace the existing track that currently occupies the area. The facility will feature an artificial turf playing field and bleachers with accessible seating, as well as a new scoreboard and sound system, according to the press release.
The Forever CBA campaign was started in 2017 with a silent phase that garnered more than $8.4 million from academy supporters. The campaign was publicly launched to the CBA community in October 2019. Future projects within the campaign include reconstructing the Benilde Hall office building, additions to the tennis courts and varsity baseball field, and the expansion of the campus cafeteria and Alumni Hall multipurpose room, according to the press release.

Middletown South High School’s Ben Schild fires a strike during a game against crosstown rival Middletown North on May 22. Schild went the distance in the Eagles’ 3-0 victory over the Lions. South pitcher to receive the honor. In 2019, Chris Lotito pitched a complete game shutout with 11 strikeouts to win the award. The 2020 season was cancelled by the coronavirus pandemic. “It’s really exciting,” Schild said about being named MVP. “I just went out there and competed on every pitch. I had good command of my fastball and tried to dot it up in some spots and throw it up in the zone where they couldn’t hit it.” The Eagles gave Schild a one-run lead in the top of the second inning as sophomore Evan Wood singled through the left side of the infield to drive in Will Christo-
pher for a 1-0 lead. In the third inning, senior Matt Pontari gave the Eagles a 2-0 lead with an RBI single. Pontari was tagged out as he tried to turn the single into a double. It was Pontari’s first experience of the rivalry at the varsity level and the senior enjoyed helping his squad get the victory. “I’m just trying to make plays to help the team get the win,” he said. “We are playing as hard as we can every game and seeing where it takes us.” In the top of the seventh, senior Tom DeMarco scored from third on Frontera’s throwing error as he tried to pick off a runner at first. Leading 3-0, the Eagles had all the runs they would need. Frontera did his best to keep the Lions
in the game, despite not having his best stuff. The senior struck out 12 hitters to raise his total to 60 K’s in 2021. Middletown North received the No. 3 seed in the Monmouth County Tournament and the Lions believe they can get back on track to make a run in the county tournament and in the upcoming state tournament. “We have to go out every day and play every game like it’s our last,” Frontera said. Middletown South will play RumsonFair Haven in the Shore Conference Tournament semifinals on May 26. The Eagles are the No. 7 seed in the Monmouth County Tournament and are looking forward to that competition. Seeing his players holding the trophy
after defeating Middletown North and celebrating a trip to the conference tournament semifinals was a welcome sight for LeMore. The Eagles’ first-year coach knows how tough it was for his players to lose the 2020 season to the pandemic. He said it has meant a lot to this year’s players to make the most of their opportunities in honor of the 2020 seniors who did not get to play their final year of high school baseball. “They are a fun group to be around every day,” LeMore of the 2021 Eagles. “In the back of our minds, we know our season can be taken away from us at any time. I am really excited they had the opportunity to hold that trophy.”

ON THE ROAD PETER PERROTTA

ome of us have dream jobs, others own dream cars. I have never owned a dream car, but for many years when I was a fulltime working journalist, I was working my dream job – I was getting paid to be a writer. Sometime in the early 2000s – my memory is a bit fuzzy – I left the full-time world of professional journalism and embarked on a second career in the car business. I started out selling Honda’s and ended up selling Mercedes Benz. When you enter the world of Mercedes, it truly is an eye-opening experience. I met people who not only had their dream jobs but enjoyed their dream cars as well. Many of my upper crust Mercedes clients not only owned one dream car, but several, as well as a few dream houses. The SUV I am reviewing this week – the 2021 Mercedes Maybach GLS600 4matic – is Peter Perrotta at the top of the list of dream cars. In fact, it was a dream for me to get to drive this elegant, state-of-the-art machine for one week that carries a hefty price tag of $171,600. This vehicle, a brand new trim level of the GLS model for Mercedes, is a show stopping head turner. Several people gave me the thumbs up sign as I passed them on the road, gas station attendants ogled, it and others just dead stopped me to tell me how much they admired my ride. Instead of trying to explain to everyone that it’s not my car, I’m just driving it for a week to review it, I’ve learned to just nod my head in response and smile – there is a lot less to explain that way. This Maybach Mercedes is nothing short of opulent, inside and out. From the very first moment you press the unlock button on the key fob and the side steps elegantly slide out automatically, you know you are in for a treat. Once inside this world of luxury, the amenities are overwhelming.

There are the executive recliner-like leather rear seats that are a finger’s touch away from a center console mounted Samsung Galaxy tablet and a refrigerated wine or champagne cooler. The rear seats come with brushed suede covered mini pillows for which you can prop your weary head. There are champagne flute holders in the rear console as well as folding tables to rest your bubbly and foie gras on. From the driver’s cockpit you settle behind a leather-wrapped steering wheel, to the right of which sits a dazzling stateof-the-art infotainment screen. The suede head liner and huge panoramic moon roof lend a nice airy feel to the cockpit. The Burmester 3D surround sound music system fits in well with the Italian Nappa leather seats and the black flamed natural ash wood trim. And once it gets dark out, the interior ambient lighting pops on outlining the entire silhouette of the interior in a soft purple light that makes you feel like you are inside a fancy casino. Simply put, this SUV is not understated at all. If you aren’t into in-your-face opu-
lence then this isn’t the vehicle for you. So, how does this state-of-the-art machine with all its dripping rich-like toys ride? As expected, this car doesn’t just ride down the road it floats around on a pillowy airmatic suspension. This four wheel drive Maybach Mercedes is powered by a twin-turbo charged V-8 engine that puts out an impressive 558 horsepower that is also assisted by a 48 volt hybrid EQ booster that gives it a little extra boost when needed. This big, luxury SUV is capable of going from zero to 60 mph in an impressive 4.8 seconds. The EPA fuel consumption ratings for this Maybach are 15 miles per gallon in city driving and 19 mpg on the highway. It has not been crash test rated for safety yet. My overall driving impression of the Maybach Mercedes is generally good, with some reservations. While you can’t argue with its power and comfortableness, I thought this SUV is a tad sluggish in the handling department. This isn’t a vehicle you can just whip
p t a i around hair pin turns with, you have to m more or less guide it smoothly around the tight turns. One other picky point is in order to fit in the wine chiller or champagne cooler in the rear seat, the refrigerated compartment of the cooler takes up a good chunk of the rear cargo area behind the second row, limited the usual cargo space one has in most SUVs. The editors at Car and Driver were equally impressed with this SUV’s opulence giving it high marks for having an “extremely luxurious” cabin, “silky smooth” ride and “flashy” exterior styling. Car and Driver gave the Maybach low marks for having a “princely” price tag, limited cargo space and for its “flashy” exterior styling. Of course, if you have the money to be able to afford an SUV of this ilk then I would certainly say that it should be near the top of your list for consideration. Proposed road safety improvements in Middletown require diversion of land MIDDLETOWN – Monmouth County officials are proposing a diversion of parkland from the Monmouth County Park System’s Hartshorne Woods Park in Middletown to allow for improvements to the intersection at county Route 8A (Locust Avenue and Valley Drive), county Route 8B (Navesink Avenue), Monmouth Avenue and Oakdale Run – specifically, the replacement of the stop-controlled fivelegged intersection with a modern roundabout. According to a press release from the county, the area proposed to be diverted is a portion of Block 786, Lot 1 (0.35 acres), which is one of the many parcels that make up the 797-acre Hartshorne Woods Park and is at the southeast corner of the existing intersection. To compensate for the diversion, county officials have agreed to acquire Block 786, Lot 2 (1.26 acres), which is immediately adjacent to the diverted area, is contiguous with the park, and will result in a net increase of 0.91 acres to Hartshorne Woods Park. “The county has designed road improvements that address pedestrian and traffic safety concerns while incorporating aesthetic details that will complement and integrate into the surrounding area,” Monmouth County Board of County Commis-
sioners Director Thomas A. Arnone was quoted as saying in the press release. “The improved traffic flow will be highly beneficial to all who use these welltraveled routes. In addition to providing for local travel, these roads provide an active and vital transportation link in the populated residential Bayshore communities to the Belford Ferry Terminal in Middletown, which shuttles commuters to New York City each day, as well as the Seastreak Ferry Terminal in Highlands,” Arnone said. Commissioner Ross F. Licitra, who is the county governing body’s liaison to the park system, said, “With the approval of the diversion, Hartshorne Wood Parks will gain almost an acre of land, adding to this significant area of preserved Highlands of the Navesink, which offers miles of hiking and biking trails and spectacular views of Sandy Hook Bay, the Atlantic Ocean, and the Shrewsbury and Navesink rivers.” There will be a virtual public hearing regarding the proposed diversion on May 26 at 7 p.m. Members of the public may participate in the meeting by phone, or by computer device such as a smartphone, computer or tablet, according to the press release. For audio only participation, dial 408418-9388 and enter the meeting ID: 129 097 9120.
For computers and smart devices, navigate a web browser to https://countyofmonmouth.webex.com/ and then join with meeting ID: 129 097 9120. When prompted for the meeting password, type ” ‘welcome’ ” to join. Public questions and comments will be taken during the meeting. Audio only callers may press *3 to virtually raise a hand. Smart device users may use the WebEx raise hand icon. Alternatively, written comments may be submitted to the county during a public comment period that will close on June 10, according to the press release. All written comments regarding the diversion request, or requests to review the materials at the Monmouth County Division of Engineering, may be directed to: Jessica Kubida, Environmental Specialist, Monmouth County Division of Engineering, Hall of Records Annex, 3rd Floor, One East Main Street, Freehold, NJ 07728 or call 732-431-7760, ext. 6775. Middletown police department holds memorial service; promotes three officers MIDDLETOWN – In memory of fallen law enforcement officers, the Middletown Township Police Department held its annual police memorial service on May 14 during National Police Week. The service was held at the Middletown Police Memorial at the corner of Kings Highway and Route 35, according to a press release from the township. The memorial honored the 61 police officers who served the police department, five of them being K-9s The service began with a call to order and the Pledge of Allegiance. Father Luigi Hargain and Deacon Martin McMahon led the ceremony with an invocation. Police Chief R. Craig Weber and Mayor Tony Perry delivered speeches at the event and Deputy Chief Robert Stefanski read the names of Middletown’s deceased officers. Members of VFW Post 2179 placed a wreath while bagpipers from the New Jer-
sey State Police played music, according to the press release. The memorial concluded with a Police Officer’s Prayer, recited by McMahon, and “Taps” performed by Middletown South High School student Logan Patterson. May 15 marked the Middletown Township Police Department’s 93rd anniversary, according to the press release. Officers Michael P. Allen, Charles J. Higgins and Ian May were promoted. Municipal officials said Higgins was promoted to the rank of lieutenant. After graduating from the Cape May County Police Academy in 2006, Higgins was hired by Middletown that same year. He has served as a Field Training Officer and as a sergeant prior to his promotion. Allen was promoted to the rank of sergeant. A graduate of the Monmouth County Police Academy, Allen has been working on the Middletown force for 18 years. He is also a Logistics Specialist First Class
in the U.S. Navy Reserve and has served for 16 years. Allen’s brother and father are retired police officers. May was promoted to the rank of sergeant. Prior to being hired by Middletown, May worked at the West Long Branch Police Department, the U.S. Department of Justice Federal Bureau of Prisons and the Monmouth County Sheriff’s Office Corrections Division. He began his career in Middletown in August 2010, where he serves as a Field Training Officer, Oleoresin Capsicum and Baton Instructor, in addition to this promotion. Finally, Chase Schwerthoffer, Wilson Cartagena, Willard Potter, Rubin Walker, Steven Coll, Gary Kramer and John Zarkivach each took the oath of office and were sworn in as auxiliary police officers by Perry.

The Count Basie Center for the Arts, Red Bank, has launched its “Back To The Basie” initiative, anticipating increased capacities and a resumption of normal operations following more than a year of shuttered and reduced operations as a result of the COVID-9 pandemic, according to a press release. “Vaccinations and a year of careful preparation and research have brought us to the precipice of allowing our patrons, students and community back to the Basie,” said Adam Philipson, president and CEO, Count Basie Center for the Arts. “The last 15 or so months have been a challenge for our nonprofit organization, but with support from the community and an array of performing artists, we have been able to squeak by with drive-ins, outdoor concerts and limited capacity shows onsite,” he said. Four new shows were announced on May 19 for the Basie Center’s Hackensack Meridian Health Theatre: Comedian Nate Bargatze (late show on Oct. 3); Bianca Del Rio (Oct. 27); MasterChef Junior Live! Middletown officials salute library as community’s asset celebrates 100 years By MARK ROSMAN Managing Editor
MIDDLETOWN – A century of service to the community by the Middletown Township Public Library is being celebrated by the Township Committee, whose members passed a resolution saluting the organization. During a meeting on May 17, Mayor Tony Perry, Deputy Mayor Rick Hibell, Committeewoman Patricia Snell, Committeeman Kevin Settembrino and Committeeman Ryan Clarke honored the institution that was created on June 4, 1921. A resolution passed by the committee members states that “a group of civicminded residents appointed as trustees by the Township Committee, responding to the needs of the growing community, organized and opened the public library with donations of over 4,000 books from the community, and with a donation from a friend of the State Librarian who gave
$5,000 and $1,000 each year after that to buy new books, on June 4, 1921.” To serve what was then a rural community, “a book truck was constructed for $1,000, with a route driven by first librarian Dorothy Norton that covered 160 miles; this traveling library was the first in the state,” according to the resolution. Eventually, the library’s collections grew to the point that a 26,000-square-foot building was constructed on 6 acres at 55 New Monmouth Road. The building was expanded to 39,000 square feet in 2003. According to the resolution, the library “engages the lives of its patrons with an average of over 617,000 items a year circulated, and 70,000 people attend over 1,600 programs in a year.” “This is a very exciting milestone for the library,” Perry said. “It is unbelievable that the library is going to be celebrating its 100th anniversary this year.” Library Director Heather Andolsen
said, “We have had so much support … to be here for 100 years, and especially in the last year (during the coronavirus pandemic). We hope to be here for another 100 years.” On June 2, the library will mark the milestone with an all-day celebration of its past, present and future, unveiling a time capsule from 1971 and burying a new time capsule to be opened in 50 years, according to a press release. At 10 a.m., attendees including local and state dignitaries will preview the contents of the 50-year-old time capsule and take part in a ceremonial burial of a new time capsule. At 4 p.m., the community is invited to attend a family friendly event which will include activities for all ages. The contents of the 1971 time capsule will be revealed. An old-fashioned ice cream truck will offer free ice cream to the first 100 attendees. Families will be able to travel through
a “Middletown Public Library Birthday Celebration” obstacle course, take home a “Dear Future Me” DIY time capsule box, visit craft tables, explore a virtual museum and enjoy a special story in the Story Walk, according to the press release. “This is a very special year for our library,” Andolsen said. “For our centennial, we want to look back at where we started while we also appreciate how far the library has come in 100 years. This is a wonderful opportunity for us to learn about our past, celebrate our present and look ahead to our future.” “The library has been a staple in our community for decades and a beacon of light during some difficult times,” Perry said. “Celebrating 100 years, especially after the eventful year we have all experienced, is truly an accomplishment. I encourage our community to use our library’s diverse resources and join me in celebrating its rich history.”
