B
rookdale Community College, the county college of Monmouth County, held a memorable 50th graduation ceremony at its campus in the Lincroft section of Middletown on July 30. With the ongoing 2020 coronavirus pandemic, the in-person commencement adhered to the state’s face covering and social distancing guidelines as graduates and their family members remained in their
vehicles most of the time, according to a press release from the college. “Brookdale certainly gleamed with pride and showed our steadfast commitment to student success,” Yesenia Madas, associate vice president of student affairs, said about the ceremony. Graduates drove onto campus and were greeted by faculty members, administration, police officers and staff waving signs,
cheering and showing their congratulations, according to the press release. The graduates and their families drove to a parking lot across from the back entrance to the Collins Arena, the building that would have housed the commencement ceremony in May if it had not been postponed due to the pandemic. A commencement stage was set up in the parking area.
Brookdale administrators were able to individualize the graduation experience for each student with a personal chance to celebrate their accomplishment and share that moment with those who helped the most along the way, according to the press release. Like every other year, each graduate

T
he school reopening plan that will be implemented by administrators in the Matawan-Aberdeen Regional School District remained uncertain as the week began. Administrators were reviewing the results of a survey regarding the reopening
plan that parents had been asked to complete and return by Aug. 13. The results were not available as of Aug. 17. The Board of Education was expected to hold a meeting on Aug. 18 during which updated information regarding the school reopening plan was expected to be provided to the community. New Jersey’s schools were ordered to close in mid-March by Gov. Phil Murphy
at the start of the 2020 coronavirus pandemic. For the remainder of the school year, students received a remote (virtual) education at their homes. For the 2020-21 school year, Murphy initially directed school administrators to develop a plan to reopen schools in September in a manner that best fits a district’s local needs. The governor said a district’s plan had
to include in-person instruction and could include some remote instruction. Murphy later said district administrators had to provide an all-remote instructional plan for parents who do not want to send their children to a school. After administrators in some school districts said they would not be able to

Excavations at historic smokehouse yield interesting finds
U
nder a sweltering summer sun and the occasional thunderstorm, Richard and Douglas Veit spent a couple of days digging square pits alongside the remains of a 19th century smokehouse on the grounds of the Taylor-Butler House in Middletown. The smokehouse, built into a small hillside just north of the grand Italianate mansion colloquially known as Orchard Home, was largely neglected when the Monmouth County Historical Association (MCHA) acquired the grounds in 1999, according to a press release from the association. MCHA is planning to restore the smokehouse, once an integral part of the home’s domestic landscape, with grants from the 1772 Foundation, in cooperation with the New Jersey Historic Trust and the Monmouth County Historical Commission, according to the press release. “Most 19th century smokehouses are long gone by now, so MCHA is fortunate to have this opportunity,” said Joe Zemla, MCHA’s associate curator. “We are very appreciative of the work done by Rich and Douglas Veit in helping us preserve this unique piece of history.” In 1853, Joseph Dorset Taylor and his wife, Mary Holmes Taylor, left their New York home to return to the ancestral Taylor family farm, located on present-day King’s Highway in the Middletown Village Historic District. Here they built Orchard Home. At the time of its construction, the Taylor residence was considered the finest in Middletown, graced with all the modern amenities of the pre-Civil War era, according to the press release. Situated on acres of pristine orchard, the estate was equipped with a service courtyard, complete with an array of out-
buildings such as an icehouse, a two-story privy, and a brick smokehouse, the latter being the traditional means of curing and storing meats prior to the advent of electric refrigeration. “Restoring the smokehouse will give visitors insight into the day-to-day workings of the household and the lives of the servants employed by the Taylor family,” said Meg Sharp Walton, executive director of MCHA. “We are grateful to the 1772 Foundation and the Monmouth County Historical Commission for making the restoration possible.” The test excavations at the base of the smokehouse were able to determine the foundation is indeed stable despite outward appearances, according to the press release. As an added bonus, several 19th century artifacts were uncovered from the shovel pits, including shards of transfer-printed whiteware, cut nails, an animal rib, fragments of a glass inkwell, and the broken remains of a large glass bottle. Richard Veit, a professor of anthropology and chair of the Department of History and Anthropology at Monmouth University, West Long Branch, and his son, Douglas Veit, made another intriguing discovery just a few yards from the smokehouse, where shovel tests confirmed the location of a former underground icehouse. Prior to home refrigeration, outdoor icehouses were insulated with straw or sawdust to keep freshly cut river ice frozen throughout the warmer months. This structure was revealed to be much larger than previously estimated, with a diameter of roughly 20 feet. Veit noted that the size of the icehouse at Orchard Home is unique, as it is uncharacteristic of others found in the county.
MONMOUTH COUNTY HISTORICAL ASSOCIATION
Richard Veit conducts an examination of the area surrounding a 19th century smokehouse on the grounds of the Taylor-Butler House in Middletown.
Although the Monmouth County Historical Association’s properties are currently closed due to the pandemic, visitors are welcome to visit the grounds of Orchard Home and MCHA’s other historic proper-
ties. Orchard Home is available to rent for private events. Visit MCHA’s website for rental information and for updates about reopening plans.
State motor vehicle forms are now available at NJMVC.gov The New Jersey Motor Vehicle Commission (MVC) announced it has placed most of its standard forms online, allowing customers to fill out the forms directly from their electronic devices prior to their MVC visit. The change means customers will no longer have to wait until they get to an MVC licensing or vehicle center to collect and complete forms for everything from learner’s permit and driver’s license applications to disabled veteran placards, according to a press release. “With this new service, we are making these forms accessible to our customers on their own terms,’’ MVC Chief Administrator Sue Fulton said. “This will also expedite processes inside our agencies, as customers come
with their forms already filled out and their documentation prepared.’’ Previously, many of the forms now available online at NJMVC.gov were only available at licensing and vehicle centers, where customers had to complete them in person before they could get served, according to the press release. The forms will continue to be available at agencies for individuals who do not access them online. The new format allows for information to be typed into allotted spaces from a computer keyboard, laptop or other personal electronic device. Known as a “fillable form,” the document can then be

printed, signed and brought to the agency where it will be scanned and processed by an MVC employee at the customer service window. Some forms, such as registration renewals, can also be printed and mailed to MVC offices, according to the press release. The offering is another step in the MVC’s push toward more customer convenience that includes continual additions to its menu of online services and a text notification service that allows customers to leave an agency and return closer to the time an MVC employee is available to assist them. ture, according to a press release. Waltz requested additional companies to be dispatched for additional firefighters and Rapid Intervention Team support to protect firefighters as they were fighting the blaze. Waltz directed the first engine to deploy an initial attack line to the front door. Search and rescue teams confirmed the structure was unoccupied. The initial attack line was then backed up by two additional lines which extinguished the fire, according to the press release. Thermal imaging cameras were employed to ensure all fire was found and extinguished. Ventilation fans were employed to remove smoke from the structure. The building’s utilities were secured by New Jersey Natural Gas, Jersey Central Power and Light, and New Jersey American Water, according to the press release.
The fire was called under control by Chief Russell Mount III at 5:10 p.m. All units were cleared from the scene at 7:40 p.m. Approximately 40 members from five companies of the Middletown Township Fire Department responded to the call from Navesink, Belford Engine, Community, Middletown No. 1 and River Plaza Hose fire companies. The Middletown Township Fire Department Air Unit and the Safety Unit also responded. Six emergency medical services members from the Fairview, Leonardo and Port Monmouth first aid squads responded with three ambulances and a rehabilitation unit to provide firefighter rehabilitation and medical services to all firefighters. No firefighter or civilian injuries were reported during the incident, according to the press release.

Ranney School celebrates ‘resilient’ Class of 2020 TINTON FALLS – Ranney School’s 63-member Class of 2020 celebrated its commencement on campus during a ceremony held on July 11. Twenty of the seniors, known as “Ranney Lifers,” had attended the school for 10 or more years, according to a press release from the school. Because of the coronavirus pandemic, the Class of 2020 was the first class to take Advanced Placement exams at home, the first to produce their year-long Capstone research projects via live, interactive YouTube presentations, and the first to have a socially distanced graduation on Ranney’s Campus in Tinton Falls, according to the press release. Student Council President Derek Vastola of Colts Neck (Harvard University) began a weekly Ranney News Network Show called “Quarantine Weekly” that showed what members of the campus were doing in their time away from school, raising the spirits of the community while bonding the members from afar, according to the press release. The Class of 2020 had representation at All-Shore and All-State Performing Arts Ensembles: Sam Novotny of Freehold (New York University, Steinhardt) in the All-Shore Jazz Band; and Haocheng Bai of Freehold (New York University) in the All-Shore Honors Chorus and All-State Mixed Chorus. Emily Chang of Holmdel (University of Pennsylvania) was awarded the U.S. Figure Skating Gold Level Graduating Seniors
Award. Autumn Siliato of Wall Township (University of South Carolina) was featured on Fox Business News for creating a philanthropic equestrian clothing line. In her commencement speech, Valedictorian Qinyuan Xue said, “Here at Ranney, we received a great education that prepared us to overcome these challenges. All of us … are here because we have tried our best and overcome the fear. “We couldn’t have done this without the help of all the teachers and our families. … Yes, the future is unclear and we are going for a college career that will be much different from our high school life. “I know we can move on and take on whatever challenges come next in our lives. And we won’t forget that our friends and family will always be by our side,” Qinyuan said. Qinyuan, known as Sophia to her classmates, is an international student who lived with a host family in Freehold. She will be attending the University of California, Berkeley. Salutatorian Seth Marx of Marlboro (Vanderbilt University) said, “As we all take the next big step of life and move into the real world, I am certain the lessons Ranney has taught us, in and out of the classroom, will be able to take us far in an uncertain future. “The lessons we learned from each other, however, will take us even farther, and I’m glad to have completed my high school education with all of you,” he said. A joint investigation conducted by the prosecutor’s office and Keyport police revealed the resident arrived in Keyport near his home and was attacked by at least three men who stole his money. Gramiccioni said the investigation remains active and ongoing with additional arrests likely. He said investigators are still looking for assistance from the public and asked anyone with information to contact Detec-
tive Ramon Camacho of the Monmouth County Prosecutor’s Office at 800-5337443 or Keyport Detective Kevin Bennett at 732-264-0706. Anyone who feels the need to remain anonymous, but has information about a crime can submit a tip to Monmouth County Crime Stoppers by calling the confidential telephone tip line at 1-800-671-4400, or by downloading and using the free P3 Tips mobile app (available for iOS and Android at https://bit.ly/3ku8AWa).
l n e - (Continued from page 1) f provide any level of in-person instruction, Murphy amended his order and said - administrators could begin the academic e year with an all-remote instructional plan n and no in-person instruction. Administrators who want to begin the s school year without in-person instruction f must explain to state officials why they , are unable to provide in-person instrucs tion and must work to reach a point where t in-person learning can be provided, according to the governor. t Superintendent of Schools Joseph r Majka said administrators in Matawans Aberdeen may choose an all-remote res opening plan depending on how parents responded to the district’s survey. In a letter to parents, the superintene dent wrote, “We thank you for your ono e f
going questions and feedback centered around our district reopening plan. We encourage you to continue to stay engaged in the reopening process. “Our work does not end with the publishing of our reopening plan. In fact, the planning and preparation of all the details of operating schools remains the focus of our work,” he said. Majka said administrators are continuing to work through procedures, protocols and best practices in the areas of cleaning and maintaining the schools in the presence of the virus; safely transporting children to and from school; conducting health screenings; and creating schedules for inperson and remote instruction. He said administrators are preparing for the possibility the 2020-21 academic year could begin with all-remote instruction. “Our reopening plans are contingent upon the results of the full-time remote
and transportation parent survey” which was due back on Aug. 13, Majka wrote. Parents who did not submit a survey response by Aug. 13 will have their children assigned to a combination in-person and remote educational plan if administrators
do not opt for an all-remote reopening plan. “We have been in this together from the start, we remain strong together and we will continue to find our way together,” Majka said.

s a got to hear their name announced as they walked across the stage to receive their diploma as friends and family memfbers cheered for them. f The arrival times were scheduled so each graduate could experience walking across the stage, according to the press release. “It was intimate, full of emotion and a
true celebration of our graduates,” Madas said. There were no speeches or crowds, as friends and family members who arrived with the graduate had to remain in their vehicle to watch their graduate cross the stage, but they cheered just as loud and were just as excited to celebrate the achievement, according to the press release. “Anyone who participated in the 2020 commencement will never forget how special it was,” Madas said.
