Matawan creates dining program to help restaurants By VASHTI HARRIS Staff Writer
M
unicipal officials in Matawan have joined forces with local restaurants to create a safe haven for customers during the time of COVID-19. The Matawan lakeside dining initiative began in August and is expected to continue as long as the weather permits. Business Administrator Scott Carew said the idea for lakeside dining “was born from a meeting of our Economic Development Committee, led by Councilman Brian Livesey and including Borough Council President Deana Gunn, as we were discussing ways to help local restaurants begin to recover from the COVID-related shutdown.” Participating restaurants are benefiting from increased capacity while their normal operating procedures are limited by restrictions related to COVID-19. “As long as the weather permits, the borough will schedule Matawan restaurants to use a dedicated area at Lake Lefferts Park from Thursday through Sunday,” Carew said. “The restaurants will take reservations, prepare the food in their kitchen, deliver it to the park and serve their customers.” Each participating restaurant will provide staff, table linens and utensils. “The borough is providing the space, restroom facilities, and tables and chairs. We are treating the area with pest control, removing garbage, and providing assistance with traffic and parking issues,” Carew said. “Finally, the borough is allowing BYOB for this program.” Restaurant operators are not being charged to participate in the lakeside dining program. Carew said the goal is to help the businesses and “to provide a great outdoor experience for our residents.” Carew credited Matawan’s public information officer, Cathy Zavorskas, with “passionately working countless hours recruiting restaurants, ordering supplies and working with me and others on the development of the plan.” Zavorskas said it took about two months to get the program going. “The goal was to find ways to rise above the challenges presented by COVID-19 and give restaurants an opportunity
Matawan municipal officials have joined with local business operators to create a lakeside dining area at Lake Lefferts Park.
to expand their service to a broader number of people, offer an exciting and enjoyable outdoor dining option for residents, and to use a major Matawan asset, the lakefront,” Zavorskas said. “It required a team effort to accomplish the various tasks necessary to successfully meet that goal, including the mayor and Borough Council members who gave us their full support. Once we had everything in place, the mayor and council members passed temporary resolutions waiving the application fee and allowing BYOB in the designated area during dining time,” she said. “Aby’s Mexican Restaurant owner,
Elias Martinez, and the Burger Shop manager … both agreed to participate whenever we were ready to go,” Zavorskas said. “I met with each of them at the lakefront to review the location, the logistics and the plans to determine exactly what was needed.” The lakeside dining program began on Aug. 20. “Our first establishment was the Burger Shop and the feedback from them and their customers was fantastic,” Carew said. Gunn, the council president, said, “I would be remiss if I did not acknowledge the work of so many people and departments that made this happen. Partnering
with our businesses is not only a win for our local restaurants, but it allows patrons to enjoy their food with a fabulous view. “We have been working to bring more programs to this location. Lake Lefferts is not just a beautiful natural resource, it’s now a destination. “In unique times like this, it’s important to come up with creative solutions to support our businesses and bring new options to our residents. Despite all the challenges of COVID-19, we are committed to doing just that. Our lakeside dining program is one example,” Gunn said. Cultural center to debut Basie exhibit with Sept. 25 event
T
he T. Thomas Fortune Cultural Center, 94 Drs James Parker Blvd., Red Bank, will open its doors and front lawn on Sept. 25 for “A Love Letter to Count Basie: From The Great Migration to The Harlem Renaissance,” an exhibit that illuminates the Red Bank-born musical giant William “Count” Basie (1904-84). The exhibit will also pay homage to some of the most important eras from the Great Migration to the Harlem Renaissance, according to a press release. A VIP opening reception will be held on the center’s front lawn. Attendees will be escorted inside the center to view the exhibit and featured items from 6-9 p.m. Morgan Stanley is the lead sponsor of an educational experience that promotes excellence in black history and culture, according to the press release. More than 1,000 Basie artifacts are archived at the Institute of Jazz Studies at Rutgers University, Newark. This is the first time the collection – known formally as the William “Count” and Catherine Basie papers and artifacts – will be shared publicly since its 2018 acquisition by the institute. The collection is the only body of materials that traces directly to the Basie family and is one of the institute’s largest collections, according to the press release. “This exhibit is especially fitting considering the racial tension we are experi-
“This exhibit is especially fitting considering the racial tension we are experiencing in the nation. Count Basie’s music broke through racial barriers and brought people together during a time of lawful segregation in America.” — Gilda Rogers encing in the nation,” said Gilda Rogers, vice president of the T. Thomas Fortune Foundation. “Count Basie’s music broke through racial barriers and brought people together during a time of lawful segregation in America,” Rogers said. Visitors will learn how Basie used his celebrity as an activist, including standing on a picket line in late 1963 as black and white students demanded that Florida State University integrate, according to the press release. Photographer, artist and former Red Bank resident Alan Burgess, founder of Benduka Arts, Los Angeles, will present a collection of photography exploring scenes from Asbury Park to Ghana. Burgess was commissioned by the T. Thomas Fortune Cultural Center to create
a Harlem literary mural collage, reflecting the Harlem Renaissance that occurred in the early 20th century. Burgess is also a contributing writer of the Harlem Renaissance narrative of the exhibit, which shapes the segregated times during which Basie made a name for himself. The VIP reception for “A Love Letter to Count Basie: From The Great Migration to The Harlem Renaissance,” will take place from 6-9 p.m. Sept. 25. Tickets are available online for a $50 donation and include a preview of the exhibit, a souvenir book and light fare with beverages. Visit www.tthomasfortuneculturalcenter.org to purchase tickets. All attendees are required to purchase tickets in advance and select the time slot during which they will attend. Visitors are
required to wear a face mask and will not be allowed to view the exhibit without being escorted inside the center, according to the press release. “A Love Letter to Count Basie: From The Great Migration to The Harlem Renaissance” was created in conjunction with the Institute for Jazz Studies and is sponsored by Morgan Stanley, OceanFirst Bank, Investors Bank, Denholtz Properties, the Community YMCA, Monmouth Arts, Two River Theater and Detour Gallery. For more information, email info@ thomasfortuneculturalcenter.org Before the 2020 coronavirus pandemic began in New Jersey, musicians, artists, civic leaders and politicians gathered at the T. Thomas Fortune Cultural Center and kicked off “2020: Year of Basie,” a celebration of Count Basie, by sharing thoughts about the Grammy winner, according to the press release. Clarence Banks, who joined the Count Basie Orchestra shortly before Basie’s death in 1984, was on hand to share recollections of his interactions with the bandleader and composer. Dee Askew, who manages the orchestra, was also at the event and spoke. Dorthaan Kirk, WBGO’s “First Lady” of Jazz, who was named a 2020 NEA Jazz Master, wrote a “Love Letter to Basie” that was shared at the event.

Middletown library asks residents to share COVID-19 experiences By STEVEN BASSIN Staff Writer
MIDDLETOWN – The directors of the Middletown Township Public Library have started a new program and are encouraging residents of all ages to participate. The COVID-19 Local History Archive Initiative allows residents to share their experiences of living through the 2020 coronavirus pandemic. “We want to maintain the history of Middletown and be able to document the challenges people went through while liv-
ing through the pandemic,” Library Director Heather Andolsen said. There are many challenges and life experiences people have faced during the past six months as the deadly virus held New Jersey in its grip, she said. For example, schools were ordered to close in mid-March and parents took on a larger role in educating their children as the youngsters were receiving remote instruction. Many people began working from home as their places of business closed. Some individuals lost their job or had their work hours and pay reduced.
The virus kept people apart and disrupted the observance and celebration of life events such as birthdays, weddings, funerals, holidays and religious services. Andolsen said that during the project, representatives of the Reference Department will interview people and document their COVID-19 stories and experiences. Participants may submit photographs, artwork, videos or a podcast as documents of what everyone hopes will be a once-ina-lifetime experience. The stories and documents will be placed into an exhibit at the library and

on the library’s website as a permanent record, Andolsen said. “We want to show future generations how we did in the pandemic,” she said. “It will be nice to tell people what we went through with COVID-19. A lot of residents have been happy to share their stories and want us to keep doing it so they can look at other stories from people in the community.” Submissions for the COVID-19 Local History Archive initiative are still being accepted. New Jersey to provide opioid overdose antidote for free, Sept. 24-26
G
ov. Phil Murphy and Human Services Commissioner Carole Johnson have announced New Jersey will offer the opioid overdose reversal drug naloxone (commonly called Narcan) for free to residents at participating pharmacies throughout the state from Sept. 24-26. According to a press release, as part of the Murphy Administration’s continued effort to combat the opioid crisis, New Jerseyans can visit participating pharmacies and anonymously obtain naloxone for free with no prescription and no appointment. Each naloxone pack contains two doses. The free naloxone will be available at 322 pharmacies, including several locations of Acme, CVS, Rite Aid, SavOn, ShopRite, Stop & Shop, Walgreens, Walmart, Weis Markets and independent
pharmacies. For participating pharmacies, visit nj.gov/humanservices/stopoverdoses This will be the Murphy Administration’s second free naloxone distribution to residents. Human Services in June 2019 oversaw a free naloxone distribution at pharmacies that led to residents receiving 32,000 doses of naloxone, according to the press release. “The ongoing opioid epidemic continues to devastate communities across our state, said Murphy. “By expanding access to Naloxone, New Jerseyans will have this lifesaving medication readily available to help those who may be suffering from an overdose. “This is all about saving lives, Johnson said. “We are continuing to find innovative
ways to combat this epidemic that has taken far too many lives. We urge everyone to visit a participating pharmacy to get a free pack of this overdose reversal drug because, quite frankly, you never know when you are going to need it to save a life. The naloxone will be distributed on a first-come, first-serve basis while supplies last, according to the press release. Naloxone can reverse overdoses from opioids by blocking the effects of opioids on the brain. Those who obtain naloxone will also be given information regarding addiction treatment and recovery, according to the press release. Participating pharmacies have standing orders from the Department of Health for dispensing of naloxone. The distribution is a Human Services program approved by
the New Jersey Board of Pharmacy. Human Services has also distributed 53,000 free doses of naloxone to police departments, 11,352 free doses to EMS teams, 1,200 free doses to shelters for individuals experiencing homelessness and 400 free doses to libraries. Those who pick up free naloxone will be given information regarding the state’s addiction treatment helpline, 1-844-ReachNJ, a 24-hour-a-day, seven-day-a-week addictions help line, where people facing addiction or their friends and family members can get immediate assistance and support from live, New Jersey-based, trained addiction counselors. ReachNJ assists callers regardless of their insurance status, according to the press release.
New text line offers gateway to mental health services
N
ew Jersey residents now have access to free and confidential emotional support via text being provided by the Mental Health Association in New Jersey (MHANJ) in response to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic. By texting NJHOPE to 51684, New Jerseyans can connect with a trained specialist to chat about the emotional impact of these challenging times as well as access education, information and referrals daily, from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m., according to a press release from the MHANJ. People may also opt in for comforting care messages delivered via mobile phone to help them cope with emotional stress on
a longer-term, ongoing basis, according to the press release. In addition to the new texting option, individuals may call for emotional support and referrals by dialing New Jersey Mental Health Cares Helpline at 866-202-HELP (4357), daily from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. Requests for crisis counseling and information about a variety of virtual support groups are also available as necessary through the helpline and texting service, according to the press release. These services are provided free through the New Jersey Hope and Healing Crisis Counseling Program (CCP). The MHANJ in collaboration with the
New Jersey Department of Human Services Division of Mental Health and Addiction Services is offering the CCP through a grant, according to the press release. The texting service offers mobile engagement which may be especially appealing to younger residents and others who have access to and prefer using a cell phone. According to the U.S. Census Bureau, nearly half of Americans between the ages of 18 and 29 reported experiencing anxiety or depressive disorder symptoms in June, the highest rate of any age group. “The new text line is an important tool as New Jersey residents continue to cope
with the realities of COVID-19, said Racheal O’Dea, a director at the MHANJ who is leading the association’s New Jersey Hope and Healing texting service. “It is evident this pandemic is greatly impacting the mental and emotion well-being of young Americans. Coupled with the New Jersey Mental Health Cares Helpline and virtual support groups, New Jerseyans now have access to a variety of free, confidential services to provide support in a manner that best suits their needs, O’Dea said. Count Basie Center readies new Basie Center Cinemas for October opening RED BANK – Directors of the Count Basie Center for the Arts, Monmouth Street, announced the not-for-profit performing arts organization has assumed operations of the White Street cinema in Red Bank with the intention of opening as the rebranded Basie Center Cinemas in October. The announcement came a week after Gov. Phil Murphy said New Jersey’s movie theaters would be permitted to reopen at the lesser of 150 persons or 25% of capacity. At those numbers, Basie Center Cinemas’ auditoriums will hold 51 and 33 people, respectively, according to a press release. Movie theaters in the Garden State had been closed since mid-March when the 2020 coronavirus pandemic began. “We were set to announce the Basie Center Cinemas project in April, but we had to put everything on hold,” said Adam Philipson, president and CEO, Count Basie Center for the Arts. “We are grateful Gov. Murphy has allowed movie theaters to operate at a reduced capacity, which will allow us to provide a safe, socially distanced cinema experience for patrons beginning next month,” he said. “I am very excited for the Count Basie Center for the Arts and their new opening of Basie Center Cinemas,” said state Sen. Vin Gopal (D-Monmouth). “People are very eager to once again safely have an entertaining night out. This experience is a
step forward in bringing normalcy back to the community, while still proceeding with health and safety as our No. 1 priorities.” Under the direction of Basie Center Executive Vice President and General Manager Izzy Sackowitz, Basie Center Cinemas will feature independent and major studio releases, film lectures and workshops, film festivals and family programming, and will act as an annex location for the Basie Center’s arts and education programs, according to the press release. Late-night showings of “The Rocky Horror Picture Show,” a long-standing tradition at the theater, will continue, according to the press release. Basie Center Cinemas will debut in strict accordance with state social distancing mandates: • The facilities’ two theaters will hold 51 or 33 people, respectively; • Patrons will be required to wear a face mask at all times, except when eating or drinking; • Seats will be sold in sets of two and four, with at least 6 feet of space surrounding seats in all directions. Single seats will be available as well; • The lobby will be retrofitted to facilitate contact-free ticketing and concessions; • Theaters will be disinfected between showings; • Restroom occupancy will be limited to one patron at a time. “Fans of independent film can rest easy knowing social distancing is very much
COMMUNITY BULLETIN BOARD Navesink Maritime Heritage Association is inviting families and youngsters age 12 and over to build wooden canoes in the open air at its Grover House headquarters, 930 West Front Street, Red Bank, on Sept. 26-27 from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. each day. Each canoe will be built by a team of four to five people, comprised of adults and youths, plus one experienced instructor. Teams are created each day depending upon the number and ages of the attendees, according to a press release. All materials, tools and skilled help are provided. Teams are asked to stay for both days so they can finish their canoe. Breakfast and a BBQ lunch are provided each day for $20 per person for the weekend. Face coverings and social distancing are required. Pre-registration is required at NavesinkMaritime.Org/Events before Sept. 25. New Jersey Blood Services, which provides blood for local patients, is looking for volunteers whose tasks at blood drives will include assisting donors with registration and/or at the refreshment area.
No medical background necessary. Must have transportation. All training is provided. Details: Call or text Sharon Zetts at 732-850-8906, Monday through Thursday, 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Residents struggling with substance use issues may call 1-844-ReachNJ to speak with counselors ready to offer assistance 24 hours a day, seven days a week. ReachNJ is a free, confidential hotline that provides individuals with concerns about their own or a family member’s substance use immediate help and treatment referrals. The help line is always answered by a live specialist. The fall issue of the Monmouth County Park System’s Parks & Programs Guide contains a complete listing of upcoming arts and crafts, nature, recreation and sports programs planned for September, October and November. The issue is available at most county parks and at www. MonmouthCountyParks.com. Registration is underway and is available online 24/7; or by phone (732-842-4000, ext. 1).
possible in this complex and that cinemas typically operate at reduced capacities to begin with,” Sackowitz said. “In addition to deep cleanings between each screening and again nightly, usable seats will be properly distanced, foot traffic will be relegated to one direction, and con-
cessions and ticketing will be completely touchless. “The audience for independent films is smaller than the summer blockbuster crowd, which means the Basie Center Cinemas experience can be safe and enjoyable for all,” Sackowitz said.
