YOUR TURN

An eloquent witness to Earth’s changing climate

I

n his 94 years, British naturalist and broadcaster David Attenborough has explored every part of the Earth, from polar ice caps to equatorial rain forests to African savannas. His acclaimed television series, including “Life on Earth” and “The Blue Planet,” brought exotic animal species into millions of homes, sparking a sense of wonder and discovery. But in his lifetime, Attenborough has seen immense changes to the Earth’s landscape and climate patterns. The world’s population has tripled, nearly half of its wilderness has been lost, and the amount of carbon in the atmosphere has risen by 50%. Thousands of wildlife species are now declining or extinct, as air and ocean temperatures rise. If current trends continue, he says, large parts of the Earth will become uninhabitable in the next 80 years, wildlife will undergo a mass extinction, and our civilization’s survival will be threatened. Attenborough’s newly released film, “A Life on Our Planet” (available on Netflix), is his attempt to change the trajectory of human impact on Earth before it is too late. “This film is my witness statement and my vision,” says Attenborough, speaking directly to the camera, his bright blue eyes clouding with grief at scenes of denuded rain forests, melting ice sheets and bleached ocean coral. For 100,000 years, he said, the Earth was a “Garden of Eden” with an average temperature that did not vary by more than a degree. But the last 200 years of human

• Reduce population growth. Every species has a maximum population that can be sustained and Attenborough believes humans are hitting their limit. The good news is the number of children being born worldwide each year is leveling off and some countries like Japan have stabilized their population. • Change our diets. If enough people switch their diet to mostly plant-based foods, which use far less land than meat production, more land can be replanted with trees to absorb carbon and provide habitat for wildlife. This is not just about saving our planet, it’s about saving ourselves, emphasizes Attenborough, who said, “With or without us, the natural world will rebuild.” “A Life on Our Planet” is a magnificent addition to Attenborough’s opus, clearly explaining the threats to Earth’s inhabitants and offering a clear pathway to a sustainable future. Attenborough notes that humans are the smartest creatures that ever lived on Earth and the only species that is able to envision the future. Let’s take this wise elder’s advice and act now for the benefit of the planet and all its species. prepared and ready for the ongoing challenges,” she said. “The board will conduct a search for a permanent superintendent shortly. The position where the board has the most influence is the selection of a superintendent. This election is important because those individuals elected will be involved in the process to identify the next superintendent. “The type of foresight needed for our board can only be gained from direct experience. It is critical that this decision is made by those who are trusted and have the experience to make this decision in the most decisive and informed manner,” Briamonte said. Reddy is an 11-year resident of Holmdel and has two sons in the school district. He has worked with Honeywell International to design energy saving programs for school districts for 17 years. He is seeking his third term on the board. “I am a strong believer in giving back and trying to help wherever I can. I appreciate what I have and have always been one to do for others. Running for a third term to me is a simple choice as there is more work to do even after all we have accomplished over the last six years,” Reddy said.

He has 25 years of experience in the telecommunications industry and currently works with a networking startup company. Zhang is a 10-year resident of Holmdel and has two sons attending Holmdel High School. She currently works for Microsoft. The candidates said their priorities as board members would be to ensure the safety of students, teachers and all district personnel while operating during the COVID-19 pandemic; to restore academic excellence. They said all students should thrive in an exciting and motivating environment; to advocate for the importance of science, technology, engineering and mathematics; and to review and redirect spending toward proper goals and objectives to hold school taxes at their current level or to reduce school taxes. “We believe that, fundamentally, school is about education and preparing our students for their future; whether that is college or a different career path. “It is important that we provide an exciting and motivating environment so students can thrive and achieve more. It is time to change priorities and focus on providing a more effective academic program,” the two candidates said.

Four candidates seeking two terms on Matawan council By VASHTI HARRIS Staff Writer

MATAWAN – Four residents are seeking two three-year terms on the Matawan Borough Council in the 2020 municipal election. The candidates are Democrats Deana Gunn and Stephanie Buckel, and Republicans Anissa Esposito and Joseph Saggese. Gunn is the current council president and Buckel is an incumbent councilwoman. Buckel has been a Matawan resident

for 16 years and said, “I never had aspirations to be involved in politics. I ran for office three years ago because I was disappointed in the direction the town was going before Joseph Altomonte was elected mayor. “I wanted to be a part of a team that was changing Matawan for the better and I wanted to get involved and serve the community. Since joining the council, I have been a part of many major accomplishments and improvements to many areas of the borough,” she said.

Buckel, who is a teacher, said she has worked on a program that led to the improvement of roads that had not been paved in decades. She is the council liaison and chair of the Recreation Committee, which is using state and county grants to improve Main Street. “We have worked to improve the parks, specifically Gravelly Brook Park, which was in desperate need. “We have made major improvements to our historical culture in town, remodeling our Burrows mansion through matching

grant money and the help of volunteers. “I am proud of what we have accomplished in the last three years and I want to keep working to make Matawan a better place to live,” she said. “At the moment, the single most pressing issue is stabilizing taxes and making sure we continue to provide our residents with a return on their investment. We need to continue working to maintain our infrastructure, which was sadly neglected for a long time. “If re-elected, I plan to continue to beautify Matawan and to make it a community businesses want to invest in; to make our Main Street a place visitors seek out for enjoyment, such as shopping, dining, etc., while still keeping the quaint, small-town feeling,” Buckel said. Esposito, who has lived in Matawan for 21 years, works as a paralegal. She said she decided to run for council “because I love my community and I want to give back. I am also concerned about the future of our borough as the budget and debt continue to go up along with municipal taxes, especially during the current (coronavirus health) crisis. “I believe we are on an unsustainable path. I have also become very concerned about the culture of a lack of transparency and respect for all residents, which has had a negative effect on the once close-knit culture of the community, under the current administration.” “My time on the (Matawan-Aberdeen Regional School District Board of Education) thoroughly prepared me for a position on the council. “I developed invaluable skills in all areas such as budgeting, contract negotiations, program building, stakeholder engagement and advocacy which I feel will be an asset to the community as a council member. … I love my community and want to help see to it that it thrives,” Esposito said. She said council members “must address the spending and debt that has skyrocketed in the past five years with little to show for it. Our municipal tax levy is up $600,000 this year when people are struggling under economic shutdown. “In 2019, we were the fourth highest taxed municipality in Monmouth County. Five years ago we were 23rd (according to) numbers from the Monmouth County Tax Board. “Our assessed value has increased considerably, but our municipal tax rate has also risen and has been higher than both school and county rates for the past few years. We have to address this,” Esposito said. Gunn has lived in Matawan for 20 (Continued on next page)

years and said, “There are many accomplishments I am proud of from my first term. We have repaired roads, fixed up parks and restored historic landmarks. “We have removed eyesores like two abandoned gas stations on Main Street. We have laid the foundation for infrastructure repairs and upgrades that will allow us to take the next step in developing our downtown and the train station. “We are working with the businesses and people who are interested in investing in Matawan. We are on our way, but we still have more work to do,” Gunn said. Gunn said her background and experience is primarily in financial services. She is working to earn a master’s degree in public administration. “Matawan taxpayers deserve a downtown they are proud of and a community with services and amenities for them to enjoy. I hope the residents give me the opportunity to continue with the team that has a vision of a restored Matawan and will continue to get things done,” she said. “Due to the (coronavirus) crisis, we need to be mindful of our local economy. We have been in touch with our business operators so they are aware of any state and federal support (that may be available). We are listening to what they need. “Since dining outside is something that will help restaurant owners get back on their feet, we have waived the fees for outdoor dining permits and streamlined the process to make it easier,” she said. Gunn said municipal officials implemented a lakeside dining program which was a creative solution to support Matawan’s businesses and to bring new options to residents. If re-elected, Gunn said she would like to continue working to enhance the downtown and transit area to attract new businesses and customers to Matawan. Saggese has live in Matawan for six years and works for the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey. “I decided to run so there can be a true sense of transparency within our government and so all residents are equally and respectfully heard, regardless of their political background. “(If elected to the council), my first issue would be that Matawan’s government becomes respectful to all residents. “Another issue is to have all town meetings recorded and to be accessible at any time so all residents may view the meetings at their convenience,” Saggese said. Raritan opens 2020 soccer campaign with 4 straight wins By STEVEN BASSIN Staff Writer

HAZLET – Teamwork and unselfish play have been the keys to success for the Raritan High School boys soccer team during a 4-0 start in 2020. The Rockets scored 20 goals through their first four contests. “They are unselfish. That’s what it comes down to,” Coach Gregg Cohen said. “They are not worried about stats. They are (looking to) see the win on the scoreboard. That is really what it is. To be honest, I haven’t seen that with too many teams. It’s a beautiful thing.” Senior Chris Fontanazza has led the way on the front line. After spending the past two years at the Players Development Academy in Somerset, Fontanazza has returned to play for his hometown team and has made a big impact. On Oct. 15, the Rockets hosted Monmouth Regional High School of Tinton Falls at Joseph J. DeVirgilio Field. With his team trailing, 1-0, going into the second half, Fontanazza gave the Rockets the spark they needed to get back into the game. Two minutes into the second half, Fontanazza put Raritan on the board with a blistering shot into the net to tie the game, 1-1. Three minutes later he converted a penalty kick - his fifth goal of the season - for a 2-1 lead. “Me coming back as a key player really helps and it’s great to see my teammates push forward from the past years,” Fontanazza said. “I knew I could help them win and I think I’ve proved that.” Later in the half, Fontanazza added his team-leading sixth assist when he found sophomore Lupo Ryder and Ryder scored the Rockets’ final goal. Through four matches, Ryder scored seven goals, including the game-winner in the final minute on Oct. 13 to help Raritan defeat Monmouth Regional, 3-2. Senior Hunter Amoedo scored four goals through four matches, including a hat trick in Raritan’s 7-0 victory over Red Bank Catholic High School to open the season on Oct. 1. Senior Chris Rotondo scored two goals, while classmates Tyler Tristao and Emir Pupovic have each found the back of the

net once this season for Raritan. “It feels like the work we have put in has paid off and we are coming together as a team,” Amoedo said. “We have all been playing together since we were in elementary school and it feels great to win these games.” Senior goalkeeper Gavin Hersey made four saves in Raritan’s second victory over Monmouth Regional. Hersey had two shutouts through four matches. The team’s Oct. 15 victory over Monmouth Regional was special for Raritan as the team honored its 13 senior players before the game. Cohen was happy to see his squad end

Senior Night with a victory and especially happy his seniors were able to experience the special event with all of the unknowns surrounding the coronavirus health crisis. “It’s all about the guys and their families and all the work they have put in over the years,” Cohen said. “Whenever you can win on Senior Night, it’s beautiful.” Raritan’s focus this season has been playing for each day and if the team gets to tomorrow, Cohen said his players will be ready to keep things rolling each time they take the field. The Shore Conference Tournament will not be played this season because of the coronavirus pandemic.

The Rockets’ goal will be to compete for the Shore Conference A Central Division crown and to make a run toward a state sectional tournament title. Cohen believes his players are capable of putting Raritan back on the soccer map after not having a winning season in 2018 and 2019. The way his players have come together to start the 2020 season and their mindset of putting the team first supports that belief in the eyes of the coach. “These boys are eager and willing to bring a championship here. We haven’t won in quite a long time. I think if we go far in the (sectional) tournament, our team can do some damage,” he said.

“It’s all about the guys and their families and all the work they have put in over the years. Whenever you can win on Senior Night, it’s beautiful.” — Gregg Cohen, Raritan soccer coach

ON THE ROAD PETER PERROTTA

2020 Alfa Romeo Stelvio Ti Sport AWD

W

hen you walk into a good Italian restaurant, no one needs to tell you where you are. In fact, if you were blindfolded, you would still be able to have a good sense or where you were. First off, the smells emanating from the kitchen would be a dead giveaway. If that weren’t enough, maybe the Sinatra music playing in the background or the clink, clink of wine glasses would be the clinchers. Either way, the Peter Perrotta ambiance of the Italian vibe is usually unmistakable. Such is the case, as well, when you get your fist look at the 2020 Alfa Romeo Stelvio Ti Sport AWD compact SUV. Quite simply, there is something unmistakably Italian about the look, feel and drive of this SUV. It has that Italian panache and flair. “In a world of bland crossovers, the Stelvio is a spicy Italian meatball in a Ferragamo suit,” write the editors of Car and Driver. That, my friends, is an almost perfect description. Introduced in 2016, the Stelvio is considered a compact luxury crossover SUV that competes with the likes of the BMW X3 and the Mercedes GLC. This crossover is produced at Alfa Romeo’s Cassino Plant in Piedimonte, San Germano, Italy. It is currently Alfa Romeo’s best selling model. In 2018, Alfa Romeo sold about 43,000 Stelvios. It had been quite some time since I had road tested an Alfa Romeo for review purposes. I think the last Alfa Romeo I had driven was the Spider way back in 1994 – the last year that car was produced. That Spider was a two-seat, front engine, rear drive roadster. Like most Italian cars, that roadster had a lot of flair to it. However, most of what I remember about that one week test drive with the Spider was how difficult it was to steer that small car. It steered like a Mack truck. The car was fun to drive, once you got it up to speed, but if you had to do a lot of twists and turns with it, it wasn’t so much fun. Well, suffice it to say, a lot has changed

2020 Alfa Romeo Stelvio Quadrifoglio

at Alfa Romeo since 1994. My one week test drive behind the wheel of the 2020 Stelvio was thoroughly enjoyable. This Stelvio is slick looking, stylish, comfortable on the inside and fun to drive. It’s steering, by the way, is smooth as silk – I guess the engineers at Alfa Romeo have figured out how to fix that issue. The Stelvio I drove was rosso – the Italian word for red – with a slick black leather interior and sporty looking 20-inch aluminum, 5-hole wheels. It has an aggressive and sporty exterior stance. Powering this Stelvio is a a 2.0 liter, four cylinder, turbo-charged engine that puts out an impressive 280 horsepower. The transmission is a smooth eight speed automatic. The Ti Sport – the model I drove – features a dynamic sport tuned suspension that affords this vehicle an exciting ride. It’s fun to drive, handles well through the tight turns and has enough power to do aggressive lane changes and passing maneuvers. The base price of the Ti Sport AWD is $45,745. My tester was equipped with a lot of options and option packages, bringing

the bottom line sticker price to $61,240 as tested. Options included: $2,300 for the Rosso Competizone Tri-coat exterior paint; $2,500 for the Ti AWD sport package; $3,250 for Active Driver Assist package; $400 for the security and convenience package; $1,350 for the performance package; $1,350 for a dual pane sunroof; $900 for an upgraded Harmon Kardon audio system; $200 for a wireless charging pad; $700 for the upgraded wheels; $1,100 for leather dash and doors and $200 for red brake calipers. The EPA fuel consumption ratings for the Stelvio are not all that impressive, but, on the other hand, not terrible. The Stelvio averages 24 miles per gallon – 28 mpg on the highway and 22 around town. The EPA estimates that it will cost, on average, about $2,050 a year in fuel costs for the Stelvio. It uses about 4.2 gallons of gas per every 100 miles driven. The Stelvio has not been crash test rated the by the government’s 5-star crash test yet. For positive points, the editor’s at Car and Driver noted of the Stelvio that it had “unmistakably Italian styling, lively han-

dling and gutsy turbo charged engine.” Agreed. Car and Driver hit the Alfa Romeo for having “a tight cargo area and untested reliability.” I didn’t find the cargo area to be tight at all. I’m not sure what the editors at Car and Driver were trying to fit back there, but I found there to be ample room. Reliability has always been an issue with Italian and French cars. However, since most people lease their vehicles these days anyway, I don’t think reliability should be a major concern if you are considering leasing one of these vehicles because the Stelvo will be covered under the 4-year, 50,000 mile warranty offered, if you lease the vehicle for 3 years. On the other hand, if you are thinking of purchasing the Stelvio and keeping it long term, beyond the basic warranty coverage, you might want to find yourself an able bodied mechanic who can fix and repair Italian cars before purchasing.

WHAT DID YOU DO FOR YOUR PARENTS?

LEGALLY SPEAKING John won the super lawyer award in 2011, 2012, 2013, 2014, 2015, 2016, 2017, 2018, 2019 and 2020* What did you do for your parents? This is a question that some people ask me during a consultation appointment. I think it’s a smart question because what a person would do for himself or his family is indicative of what he believes is the best advice. My mother lived to be ninety-four years old. (Well, three weeks short of her ninety-fourth birthday, but I think she earned the ninety-four.) For the last six years of her life, my mother lived in a nursing home and received Medicaid benefits. Medicaid paid for the cost of her care for all those years. Had Medicaid not paid for her care, my parents would have never been able to afford her care and her care certainly would have bankrupted my father. Despite being a Medicaid beneficiary, my mother spent those six years in the nicest nursing home I’ve ever visited. She received outstanding care. My father is still alive. He’s ninety-two years old. He has been in a nursing home for the past year. He, too, is in one of the nicest nursing homes I ever visited. As with my mother, my father is a Medicaid beneficiary. Medicaid pays for the cost of his care. So, what planning did I do for my parents that permitted both of them to qualify for Medicaid and both of them to spend the last years of their lives receiving the highest level of care in the world? The first thing that every good plan involves is well-drafted estate planning documents. If you read my column regularly, you know that I do not believe that all estate planning documents are the same. I put particular emphasis on the concept of well-drafted documents. So, what are the well-drafted estate planning documents that I drafted for my parents? A last will and testament is important. If you own assets or have young children, you should have a welldrafted Will; however, as I always say to my clients, “A Will is for other people because no one is looking at your Will until after you die.” More importantly, I advise my clients to have a well-drafted financial power of attorney and advanced health care directive. I have reviewed hundreds of financial powers of attorney and not all powers of attorney are the same. When you draft a power of attorney, you are the principal and the person you name to make decisions for you is your agent. An agent can only do for the principal what the power of attorney document says the agent can do, so you want to ensure that the power of attorney document is very comprehensive and covers all types of financial transactions. The power of attorney must specifically permit the agent to gift the principal’s assets in order for the agent to have the authority to make gifts of the principal’s assets. Since almost all Medicaid planning involves gifting of assets, the power to gift is one of the first powers I look for when reviewing a power of attorney document. If the power of attorney does not permit gifting, any type of Medicaid planning is dead in the water. I also advise clients to have an advanced health care directive so that family members can make health care decisions for the client and access the client’s health care information. Around the age of seventy, I advise clients to begin transferring assets out of their name to the name of their children. Most people who need long-term care, need long-term care in their eighties. The Medicaid program has a five-year lookback, meaning that when you apply for Medicaid benefits, they punish any gifts that an individual made in the five years preceding the date of their Medicaid application. If you give assets away when you are around age seventy, by the time you are eighty, more than five years would have elapsed, so the Medicaid office cannot punish you for the gifts you made. You will then qualify for Medicaid benefits when you need those benefits. So, what does giving assets away mean? The most common asset that people give away is their house. Typically, I advise the client to retain life rights in the house and to transfer the remainder of the house to an irrevocable trust for the benefit of their children. This gets the house out of their name and starts the clock running on the five-year lookback. If you follow this advice, you will be well on your way to setting yourself up for excellent care in your twilight years. It’s what I did for my parents.
