Middletown launches program to assist small businesses By MATTHEW SOCKOL Staff Writer
O
fficials in Middletown have launched a program that will provide financial assistance to small businesses in the municipality that have been affected by the 2020 coronavirus pandemic. During a press conference on Oct. 15, officials announced the launch of the Middletown Economic Relief Program (MERP), which will offer up to $15,000 to eligible businesses in the township. The program’s funding, which is more than $400,000, was provided through the federal Coronavirus Aid, Relief and Economic Security Act and seeks to help business operators who are facing a financial strain from the pandemic’s impact. Mayor Tony Perry, Monmouth County Freeholder Director Thomas Arnone and U.S. Congressman Chris Smith spoke at the event. Perry said he wanted to notify the community about MERP, which he described as a program that will give something back to the small businesses that support Middletown. “We understand the impact the coronavirus has had on small businesses. Think about everything small businesses give to us. They make Middletown a great community, a great place to live and raise a family, and we are here to help them,” the mayor said.
Arnone said Monmouth County has received $108 million in federal funding to deal with the pandemic’s financial impact and he credited municipalities such as Middletown for ensuring that the money will not go to waste. “We spend that money on great places like Middletown. Our ultimate goal is to partner with our municipalities. What better partner do we have than our biggest municipality? Middletown is the backbone of our success,” Arnone said. Smith described Middletown’s economic assistance program as true leadership and part of a bridge that will allow the community to return to a life that existed before the pandemic struck New Jersey in March and continues to this day. “There will be a point where the coronavirus becomes a difficult memory. This program is one of the reasons why we will get through it,” the congressman told those in attendance at the press conference. Perry said MERP has been created to help all eligible businesses in Middletown. “We are set to help our residents and businesses. We don’t care where you live or who you employ. We want you here in Middletown. We want you to use the $15,000. “The American Dream will live past this (pandemic) and businesses like you are why,” the mayor told the business operators who were present for the announcement of the initiative.

Community raises $50,000 to benefit Girl Scouts of the Jersey Shore
I
n a great show of support during the challenging COVID-19 health crisis, community members came together on Oct. 6 to raise more than $50,000 that will enable more young girls to thrive with Girl Scouts of the Jersey Shore. More than 80 golfers and supporters gathered at the Rumson Country Club for the annual Girl Scout Golf Classic charity event, presented by Investors Bank and OceanFirst Bank, according to a press release. Originally scheduled for June, the golf tournament was postponed due to the pan-
demic. But with safety measures in place, golfers enjoyed a round of golf, followed by an open air dinner reception to raise support for the area’s largest nonprofit organization devoted to girls, according to the press release. Forty local businesses and individuals also supported the event as sponsors, reflecting the “caring spirit” of the local community, Girl Scouts of the Jersey Shore CEO Eileen Higgins said. “It has been a difficult year for Girl Scouts and our entire community,” Higgins said. “We could not be more thank-
ful for the generosity of our sponsors and golfers. Their support will make it possible for more girls from all backgrounds to develop lifelong leadership skills through Girl Scouting.” Higgins said proceeds from the event will fund membership fees for girls whose families may be experiencing financial difficulties. Support will also underwrite development of new virtual and in-person leadership programs and activities to keep nearly 10,000 girls connected in the pandemic. “Now more than ever, Girl Scouts
need time together in safe environments to strengthen their overall well-being and to be supported in achieving their leadership goals,” Higgins said. Serving as event co-chairs were Nina Anuario, senior vice president at OceanFirst Bank and first vice chair of the Girl Scouts of the Jersey Shore Board of Directors, and Victoria Magliacane, senior vice president at Investors Bank. Families interested in learning more about Girl Scout membership, financial assistance or programs may visit www.GSFun.org or call 800-785-2090.

‘Joker’ turns from comedy to horror, writing latest thriller from home By JENNIFER AMATO Managing Editor
I
t may not be impossible to spot one of your favorite Tenderloins in the greater Princeton area. James S. “Murr” Murray, one of the stars of “Impractical Jokers” and “The Misery Index” on truTV, moved to Princeton last fall with his fiancee. “[We’re] absolutely loving it,” Murr said. “My fiancée and I are huge fans of Witherspoon Grill. If it were up to us, we would be there every night. “Having lived in New York City my entire life, it’s been wonderful to get out, finally breathe fresh air, and hike and kayak in the area. “Staten Island was a great place to grow up – and that’s where I met my fellow Impractical Jokers – but Princeton is a great place to create our new life together and one day raise kids together.” Although Murr is best known for his comedic acts and stunts on the popular truTV practical joke show, he said he got his degree in writing from Georgetown University and always dreamed of becoming an author one day. “The success of ‘Impractical Jokers’ finally gave me the chance to start my alternate career as a novelist. Writing and improvisation are equally difficult, surprising and rewarding. But both represent my personality equally well. It’s all about affecting people in a fun, positive way through creativity of all kinds,” he said. Murr said he grew up reading and watching thrillers, “so it was kind of a natural progression for my writing to spring from that early interest.” He said he enjoys “The Meg” by Steve Alten, “The Andromeda Strain” by Michael Crichton, and is a personal fan of R.L. Stine and Brad Meltzer. They always say, “Write what you know” Murr said about delving into a career in horror writing. His newest thriller, “Don’t Move,” was released on Oct. 20 – after being written from his home in Princeton. He also recorded the audiobook from there.
Megan Forrester has barely survived the unthinkable. Six months ago, she witnessed a horrific accident that killed her husband and son, and lives with the guilt of knowing she could have done more to save them. Now, Megan hopes to mend the pieces of her broken spirit by attending a local church group’s annual camping trip. But the church group members — riddled with dark secrets of their own — make a catastrophic navigational mistake, leaving them stranded in an untouched canyon in the West Virginian national forest. Isolated from any chance of help or rescue, Megan and the others quickly realize why this side of the canyon has never been surveyed by mankind: it’s home to a terrifying prehistoric arachnid that patiently stalks its prey through even the slightest movement or vibration in the forest. And it’s desperate for a meal. Grief-stricken and haunted by her tragic loss, Megan now faces her ultimate test of endurance. Can she outwit a bloodthirsty creature hellbent on ensuring that no one gets out alive? When a single wrong turn can mean
James “Murr” Murray PHOTO COURTESY OF WUNDERKIND PR
death, she only has one option: DON’T MOVE. “I’m lucky enough to work with a wonderfully charming and British co-author named Darren Wearmouth. We also happen to be very close friends so we’re constantly calling each other to talk about our favorite scary movies or whatever we’ve watched that week,” Murr said. “Both of our imaginations can run pretty wild, so we’ll start kicking around a few ideas. ‘Don’t Move’ was born out of one of those. It took us three months to write the entire book, which is a testament to just how well we work together. “Our earlier series, the ‘Awakened’ trilogy, is a much larger world of characters and combines hordes of bloodthirsty monsters and evil international conspiracies. ‘Don’t Move’ is one contained story. It’s much more like a classic, old school 1980s
slasher movie. It’s all action and tension. “And coming next year is another thriller – written right here in Princeton as well – called ‘The Stowaway,’ ” Murr said. His advice for anyone pursuing a career in writing or publishing, or comedy or acting, starts with: Never quit. “When the guys and I were first starting out, trying to get the show off the ground, the first network executive we met with said we weren’t ready for TV. “The next executive we met with told us were too old for TV, meaning we must have missed that sweet spot when we were absolutely perfect for TV. “Ten years later, we’re still going. The point is, don’t let anyone else limit or define your success. Always keep doing the things you love and one day, it will pay off,” Murr said. Through the challenge that is the COVID-19 pandemic, Murr said he is trying to cope as best as possible. “Well, just like everyone else, it’s been tough adjusting to this new world. We’ve found some comfort in raising money for charities and frontline workers who are out there keeping people healthy. Melyssa and I are lucky that we’ve had all this extra time for planning our wedding! “As for the Jokers, we’ve been filming a new TV show from home called ‘Impractical Jokers: Dinner Party.’ And we finally went back to work filming ‘Impractical Jokers’ as well. Thankfully, because I missed my friends dearly,” he said. Murray is a writer, executive producer and actor, best known as “Murr” on the hit television show Impractical Jokers along with his comedy troupe, The Tenderloins. He has worked as the senior vice president of development for NorthSouth Productions for over a decade and is the owner of Impractical Productions, LLC. He recently starred in “Impractical Jokers: The Movie,” and also appears alongside the rest of The Tenderloins, and Jameela Jamil, in the television series “The Misery Index” on TBS. Area businessman facing additional theft charges related to jewelry sales
T
he owner of a Rumson jewelry store who was charged with theft in September is now facing additional charges after 11 additional individuals came forward to report being victimized. The additional individuals said the jeweler failed to return jewelry totaling about $300,000 that was left at his store on consignment, for redesign, or for repair, Monmouth County Prosecutor Christopher J. Gramiccioni announced on Oct. 15. On Oct. 13, Anthony Goltsch, of Manchester Township, the owner of the Golden Goose jewelry store, 7 W. River Road, Rumson, was charged with another count of second degree theft by failure to make required disposition of property received, according to a press release from the Monmouth County Prosecutor’s Office. Goltsch is now charged with the theft of jewelry valued at approximately $560,000, according to the press release. According to Gramiccioni: • Victim 1 consigned a ring with an appraised value of $45,000 to Goltsch in April 2019. The individual has not received any payment for the ring and has attempted to get the ring back on numerous occasions, but Goltsch has not returned or

paid the victim for the ring. • Victim 2 gave Goltsch a large quantity of sterling silver jewelry to melt in November 2015. The jewelry has an estimated value of between $5,000 and $10,000, but the individual has to date not received payment from Goltsch. • Victim 3 consigned a watch with an estimated value of $1,800 in July 2019. The individual has not received any payment for the watch and has attempted to get the watch back on numerous occasions, but Goltsch has not returned or paid for the watch. • Victim 4 paid Goltsch a deposit of $6,900 for a ring in June 2020. Goltsch did not deliver the ring, but the victim was able to reverse the charge on his credit card. • Victim 5 paid Goltsch $34,500 for a watch between March and June 2018. The watch was never delivered by Goltsch and he has refused to refund the money. • Victim 6 paid Goltsch a total of $98,704 between November 2019 and February 2020 for gold coins and silver coins. The individual has not received the coins despite numerous follow-ups with Goltsch. • Victim 7, who is a jewelry dealer, provided diamonds on at least eight occa-
sions to Goltsch to sell between April 2018 and June 2019. Despite numerous requests for payment or a return of the diamonds, Goltsch failed to pay or make a return. The total amount of the theft for this individual is $98,500. • Victim 8 in March 2019 gave earrings to Goltsch for repairs. Despite requests made to Goltsch, he has refused to return the items valued at between $700 and $1,000. • Victim 9 turned over to Goltsch in June 2019 assorted gold jewelry for melting. To date, the individual has not received payment for the gold jewelry that is valued at approximately $3,500. • Victim 10 gave Goltsch assorted jewelry valued at approximately $10,000 on consignment in September 2019. The individual followed up with Goltsch, but to date has not received payment for the assorted jewelry and Goltsch has refused to return the jewelry. • Victim 11 left her watch with Goltsch for repair in April 2019. The individual was charged $535 for the repair in August 2019. The individual has followed up numerous times, but has not received the watch back from Goltsch. The watch is
valued at approximately $5,000. A joint investigation by the Monmouth County Prosecutor’s Office and the Rumson Police Department initially uncovered three individuals who have failed to receive any payment from Goltsch or a return of the items involved, according to the press release. After the initial charge of second degree theft by failure to make required disposition of property received against Goltsch was reported, the 11 additional individuals stepped forward to detail how they had allegedly fallen victim to his crimes. A total of 14 victims have been identified and more could be forthcoming, according to the press release from Gramiccioni. Anyone with information regarding the Golden Goose is asked to contact Detective Michael Acquaviva of the Monmouth County Prosecutor’s Office Financial Crimes Unit at 732-431-7160, ext. 2233, or Rumson Police Detective Donald Schneider at 732-842-0500. If convicted of the theft charge, Goltsch faces a sentence of five to 10 years in state prison on each count, according to the press release.

Make-A-Wish beneficiary makes donation to children’s hospital

ackensack Meridian Children’s Health’s K. Hovnanian Children’s Hospital at Jersey Shore University Medical Center, Neptune, received a PlayStation game console and large screen HD television from Make-A-Wish New Jersey beneficiary Niko Picchierri and his family; mom and dad Diane and Paul, and sister Taylor, of Howell. Niko is battling Hodgkin’s lymphoma and recently went back into active chemotherapy treatment for the second time at the children’s hospital, according to a press re-
lease from the medical center. His wish was for an online shopping spree; he wanted to get electronics of his own, including a brand new PlayStation, a new Mac laptop and a new iPhone. However, Niko knew he also wanted to take the opportunity to give something back to the hospital that took care of him during treatments, according to the press release. “I am positive our pediatric patients will love the new game console and large screen TV,” said Annamarie Cutroneo, vice president, Operations and Support
Services, Jersey Shore University Medical Center, who accepted the gifts along with physicians and nurses from the children’s hospital. “We are grateful for Niko’s thoughtful and generous gifts. What an extraordinary young man to think of others as part of his wish,” she said. Niko and his family often discussed how impactful additional items would be for children in active treatment, so Niko made sure to dedicate some of his wish funds to purchase the items, which will be

installed at the children’s hospital for its pediatric patients, according to the press release. “Moments like this remind us of not only how resilient and courageous our wish kids are, but also how selfless they are, too,” Make-A-Wish New Jersey President and CEO Tom Weatherall said. “Niko has had to face the devastating realities of a life-threatening medical condition and he is now bravely facing it again. Niko chose to set aside a part of his wish to give to other kids who might need a smile. Acts of kindness like Niko’s inspire us and the community daily. “In September our organization surpassed a global milestone – 500,000 wishes granted since our mission began in 1980. These wish children are most often referred to us by their medical teams. “How grateful we are to partners like K. Hovnanian Children’s Hospital for the care they give to kids like Niko and for referring their patients to our mission. “While wishes involving travel have been postponed for the health and safety of our wish families, wishes like Niko’s are being granted every day across the country and around the world. Wishes are not cancelled. We will continue to provide hope to kids when they need it most,” Weatherall said.

Early Breast Cancer Diagnosis Saves Lives By Rachel P. Dultz, M.D., F.A.C.S. During their lifetime, 1 in 8 women will be diagnosed with invasive breast cancer, according to the American Cancer Society, and 1 in 39 will die from the disease. However, most women can survive breast cancer if it is found and treated early. In fact, there are more than 3.5 million breast cancer survivors in the United States today, according to the American Cancer Society. Getting regular screening tests is the most reliable way to find breast cancer early. Non-urgent care at the Penn Medicine Princeton Medical Center Breast Health
Center was temporarily postponed several months ago due to COVID-19. Routine screenings and diagnostic mammograms have resumed, with extensive protocols in place to help ensure patient safety at this time. Understanding the Risks Although many women who develop breast cancer have no risk factors, there are certain factors that increase your chances of developing the disease. Further, incidents of breast cancer increase with age. Other risk factors include: • A history of breast conditions or prior breast cancer diagnosis • A family history of breast cancer, par-

Recommendations for how early mammograms should begin and how frequently you should be screened depend on your personal and family history as well as your age.
The American College of Radiology, for one, recommends a screening mammography every year for women who are at average risk for breast cancer beginning at age 40. It is important, however, to talk with your doctor about screening and what is appropriate for you. For screening purposes, a woman is considered to be at average risk if she doesn’t have a personal history of breast cancer, a strong family history of breast cancer, or a genetic mutation known to

COMMUNITY BULLETIN BOARD To safeguard supporters, the Hackensack Meridian Bayshore Medical Center Foundation has moved its annual October fundraising event to a virtual format to be held on Oct. 29 at 7 p.m. In lieu of the planned, in-person Oktoberfest celebration, the foundation will host a program that donors can stream live to continue to raise necessary funds for Hackensack Meridian Bayshore Medical Center, Holmdel, that will address the growing health needs of the community. Funds raised will support the future Dr. Robert H. Harris Emergency Care Center, as well as the medical center’s COVID-19 Emergency Relief Fund, according to a press release. The Bayshore Oktoberfest Community
Celebration virtual event, chaired by Carol Stillwell and Mary Ann Larkin, will include updates from Hackensack Meridian Health leadership about the current Emergency Care Center project and inspirational videos and tributes to health care heroes who continue to fight COVID-19 on the front lines, according to the press release. The Bayshore Oktoberfest Community Celebration virtual event will also feature a pumpkin decorating contest in which community submissions are welcome, as well as a culinary demonstration by a local chef. Qualifying sponsors and donors will also receive a pre-packaged chef kit with the opportunity to follow along with the demonstration on event day. To participate, visit HackensackMeridi-
anHealth.org/BMCOktoberfest. There is no cost to participate as a viewer, however, donations and sponsorships in support of the event can be made on the registration website. The 2020 Discussion Series will continue with “Laugh for the Health of It! at 6:30 p.m. Nov. 17. This will be a Zoom presentation by Michele Granberg, a certified laughter leader and an expert in facilitating laughter therapy. Treatment for breast cancer varies from person to person and is increasingly more personalized and tailored to the specific cancer’s unique biological profile. No two cancers are treated the same. Y Academy programs offer options for academic support, child care
W
hen local school district administrators announced they would start the 2020-21 school year with a blend of in-person and remote learning for students, working parents like Dr. John Vaclavik and his wife, Barbara, of Fair Haven were worried. They were trying to figure out how they could balance the new hybrid learning model for their four children in grade school and continue with their professional careers. As the COVID-19 pandemic struck during the spring, they juggled their schedules to help their children navigate the new normal of Zoom classes and online learning after schools were closed and youngsters had to spend the rest of the 2019-20 academic year learning at home, according to a press release. “I would sit in my car and take calls while the kids played in the front yard,” said Barbara, a licensed clinical social worker for the Visiting Nurse Association. “I did my best to help them with their online schoolwork, which was new to them and me, and I worked long hours to stay connected with my clients.” Dr. Vaclavik, an OB-GYN, shifted his office hours to help with the children’s virtual learning and to make it all work for the family. The Vaclaviks were relieved when they heard the Red Bank Family YMCA was offering a new program this fall where their children could spend time on the days when they were not physically in school, according to the press release. “There were so many times when the Y has been there for me and my family,” said Barbara Vaclavik, who is a longtime Y member. “This was a lifesaver for us because we needed help for the children with remote learning and a safe place for them to go.” The three younger Vaclavik children attend the Y Academy in Red Bank three days a week from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. The oldest, a sixth-grader, stays at home with supervision from a babysitter, who also helps all the children when the school day ends. Coincidentally, the Vaclaviks originally met their sitter at the YMCA Child Watch room. “Our kids are happy going to the Y and after they finish their remote schoolwork with the help of YMCA staff, they can enjoy lots of supervised activities,” Mrs. Vaclavik said. The YMCA of Greater Monmouth County created its new Y Academy program this year to help support local families and schools with evolving needs in

response to the coronavirus pandemic, according to the press release. “One of our main goals was to provide convenient, flexible and safe child care options, and academic support for working parents in our community,” President and CEO Laurie Goganzer was quoted as saying in the press release. The Y Academy is now available at five YMCA facilities in the region: the Freehold Family YMCA, the Freehold Borough YMCA Community Center, the Old Bridge Family YMCA, the YMCA Children’s Achievement Center in Matawan and the Red Bank Family YMCA. In Red Bank, there are more than 60 children enrolled in the Y Academy. Children attend two or three days a week for a full day or a half-day. The children log in to their virtual classes from a personal device and receive help with schoolwork from YMCA staff and volunteers, according to the press release. The Y offers non-contact activities like yoga and STEAM challenges (science, technology, engineering, arts and math), and the children get to spend time outdoors. They also take part in mindfulness activities. The Y is following Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and local health department guidelines during the pandemic, said Stacey Lastella, vice president of Child Achievement. Children and staff members wear masks, health screenings take place at drop-off, and children and parents are temperature checked, she noted. In addition to the Y Academy, the Y provides before- and after-school care in 15 Monmouth County school districts, and full-day kindergarten and full-time child care in Freehold and Matawan to support local families. Sliding scale financial assistance is available for all programs based on need, according to the press release. “The Y Academy is another commitment to supporting families and children in the greater Monmouth County community,” Goganzer said. Goganzer said community volunteers are welcome to lend a hand at the Y Academy as part of the nonprofit organization’s Togetherhood volunteer initiative. “It’s a great way to come together as a community to support families and children though this new norm,” she said. For information about the Y Academy and other YMCA programs, visit www. ymcanj.org Individuals who are interested in volunteering at a Y Academy may contact Stacey Lastella at slastella@ymcanj.org
