Online public library traffic, digital selections, virtual programs soar in part due to pandemic By KATHY CHANG Staff Writer
P
ublic libraries across the state may not be physically open, but online offerings continue as traffic to extensive digital selections and virtual programs have soared in part due to the novel coronavirus pandemic. Gov. Phil Murphy implemented a series of social distancing measures to mitigate the further spread of COVID-19 in New Jersey, which included the closure of library buildings. The measures will remain in place until the executive order Murphy signed on March 16 has been lifted. Libraries across Middlesex County are also seeing increases in digital usage since they had to close their doors. Michael Bobish, director of the Old Bridge Public Library, said their library system saw an 18% increase of its overall e-checkouts in March from the previous year. The 2,660 items checked out included 1,337 eBooks and audiobooks from eLibraryNJ, 447 Hoopla streaming movies and music, 327 Kanopy streaming movies and 549 RBDigital downloadable magazines. The digital offerings in Old Bridge also includes 1,700 concerts and music documentaries through Qello. The Monroe Township Public Library has seen a significant surge in usage of downloadable digital media, including ebooks, digital audiobooks, movies, TV shows, magazines and music. “In March, over 100 patrons logged into Hoopla for the first time compared with just 27 first-time users in March 2019,” said Karen Klapperstuck, assistant library director in Monroe. “Overall Hoopla checkouts are up by 47% when compar-

ing March 2020 with March 2019. Checkouts are also up 29% in eLibraryNJ and 36% RBdigital when comparing March 2020 with March 2019. We anticipate seeing similar or more significant increases in usage in April.” Library cardholders in Monroe are encouraged to use the many digital services available on its website www.monroetwplibrary.org/resources/digital/. Temporary library cards may be obtained through www.monroetwplibrary.org/circulation/ library-card/. In addition other online resources are available on the website, including Mango Languages, Consumer Reports, Morningstar through www.monroetwplibrary.org/ databases. “Our library staff is working to bring you programs to your computer, smartphone and tablet,” Klapperstuck said, noting a variety of live programs for kids and teens, adults and programs for all ages/ families are offered everyday of the week via Zoom Video Communications at www. monroetwplibrary.org/virtual-programs/. The Metuchen Public Library has posted links to the public on its website and social media pages for accessing the library’s digital resources for Hoopla including ebooks, audiobooks, movies, music TV shows, and free Hoopla bonus; Overdrive, also called Libby, for ebooks and audiobooks; unlimited RBdigital magazines and many free e-resources for online classes, language, business, and self-improvement. Hsi Hsi Chung, director of the Metuchen Public Library, said they allocated more budget funds for digital resources and e-contents due to the expected high demands. “We want to stay vital and engage with (Continued on page 3)

the public through the resources and services we provide during this challenging time,” she said. “Together we stay stronger.” The Hoopla usage jumped 26% from 330 checkouts in February to 416 checkouts in March. The Overdrive and RBdigital usages have remained steady with over 830 checkouts for both ebooks and audiobooks, and close to 300 checkouts in digital magazines, Chung said. “All library materials are extended until May 15, so we ask the library users to keep the library materials with them until we reopen,” Chung said, adding all expired library cards have been renewed to May 15. “All fines will be waived until May 15. Our book drop in the back entrance is still open.” Residents without a Metuchen Library card are encouraged to apply for one by emailing metuchenpubliclibrary@lmxac. org or visiting www.metuchenlibrary.org. The library cards are issued online to allow the public to access the library free eresources. “The library staff is working from home and will make plans to provide online programming such as storytime and virtual activities through Facebook and other social media,” Chung said, adding the library has launched its first e-newsletter to keep the community informed about the continued resources and basic services the
library provides. A Free Little Library table with some print books is set up in front of the library by Library Place for some residents who might need physical books during the challenging time. For information follow the Metuchen Library’s social media sites on Facebook, Instagram and Twitter or contact metuchenpubliclibrary@lmxac.org. Library staff will be available to assist any tech help and answer questions. In Woodbridge, Mayor John McCormac in his daily reports on COVID-19, had said since officials announced their library website – woodbridgelibrary.org – more than 22,000 items had been checked out online in one week. Residents can sign up for a library card at www.woodbridgelibrary.org for access to online resources. Library cards that were due to expire between now and June were automatically renewed to encourage use of online services that require a library card number. The site has books, magazines, movies, audiobooks, comic books and plenty of other items to keep families and children interested while stuck at home, McCormac said. Monica Eppinger, library director for the Woodbridge Public Library, said the mayor is reading virtually to kindergarteners – aired on TV-35, Woodbridge TV YouTube, and the mayor’s Facebook page – with selections provided with the assistance of staff; librarians are staffing a new chat information service from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., weekdays; and library staff members are monitoring the Ask-A-Librarian email service to update resident library cards and assist with digital resources. In addition, library staff members are creating and sharing positive, informational, educational social media posts in hopes to include digital media “how-to” and recommended reading lists. “For instance, we’ve posted a page of webpages for parents who are looking for supplemental, education activities for their children who are learning at home,” Eppinger said.

Edison Library officials said some of the most popular databases are Hoopla, Libby, Kanopy, and Brainfuse – JobNow and HelpNow. A list of all the online databases for the Edison Township Public Libraries are at edisonpubliclibrary.net/databases201309_all.shtml. The South Brunswick Library offers a vast digital collection of ebooks, audiobooks, current magazines, movies, and music. The library’s extensive group of databases offers language learning and ESL [English as a Second Language] with Rosetta Stone and Pronunciator, virtual homework help with Brainfuse, and access to Consumer Reports with Ebscohost. Virtual activities for children include storytimes, crafts and cooking activities and poetry readings for adults. For more information visit www.sbpl.info/. “The South Brunswick Library is eager to serve its community, but now in a new way,” said Judy Pietrobono, assistant library director. “We are still here for our residents and can’t wait to see them in person again.” In March, the library saw 1,092 circulations on the Hoopla service, 744 checkouts from RB Digital, 2,815 circulations from Libby, and 567 uses from Freegal, which provides access to a variety of music. Pietrobono said chat calls for library assistance have gone up “2,000%” since doors closed. In addition, the library’s Facebook page garnered 400 more “likes” since the library’s closure. Library cards can be issued for residents at www.sbpl. info/. “Since we’ve been closed, 69 new library cards have been issued,” she said. “In addition, 90 cards were made for Crossroads [Middle School] students in anticipation of the closing.” The library, through its information services and IT staff, partnered with the township, the police department and the school district to launch the website www. southbrunswickcovid.info/ as part of South Brunswick’s mission to be the information source for South Brunswick. The web hosting is made possible by the South Brunswick Library Foundation. Leah Kloc, library director at the Sayreville Public Library, said the library is committed to supporting and enriching the community while their physical building is closed. “Our website has links to trusted sources on the COVID-19 virus, so our patrons are not misinformed during this terrible pandemic,” she said. “The library is also committed to offering programs, books and services to give people a break from the 24-hour news cycle.”

Since closing, there has been a 46% increase in digital downloads from ELibraryNJ. Additionally, the Sayreville library is part of a library consortium that consists of more than 30 libraries. Sayreville patrons have access to their e-book collections as well. Total consortium downloads increased by 31%, library officials said. More than 1,200 patrons signed up for Hoopla service in Sayreville since the closure on March 15. The Sayreville library offers programs and services for children, teens and adults online. The library’s head of youth services, Hannah Lee, has worked to create comprehensive programming for youth of all ages in the community. “She, along with Librarian Pam Gunter and Library Associate Marie Chuntz, offer multiple online storytimes, baby lapsits, crafts and STEM programs,” Kloc said. The online programs are recorded on the library Facebook page, and some have been viewed thousands of times. Kloc noted the programs are promoted to other local libraries and attract viewers from all over the country. Lee also conducts a chapter book readalong for ‘tweens at sayrevilleyouth.wordpress.com, introducing them to quality literature a few chapters at a time. The page includes tips for parents who are teaching their children at home and suggestions for family activities. Teen Librarian Brittany Coyle is responsible for online and remote teen programming. The Teen Advisory Board meets remotely, as does the Dungeons and Dragons program, in efforts for teens to keep in touch with their peers and provides a sense of normalcy. “For teens, we get a weekly crowd of 13 volunteers at our Zoom meetings,” Lee said. “They are planning a Community Pen Pal group where they are partnering with nursing homes and elementary students to practice writing letters to each other,” she said. “They are also looking into starting a Zoom Reading Buddies program where they can help kids practice reading with one-on-one sessions. Every Monday, Brittany leads a Watch Party where they can socialize while watching hilarious TV shows. And on Wednesdays, we have a group of teens who play [Dungeons and Dragons] online with me as Game Master, where they can also talk about their homework assignments and often branch out into study groups after the game.” The library’s Baby Steps program

A pandemic that has impacted all aspects of life This is part of an ongoing series about the ways COVID-19 has impacted daily life. To read the complete story, visit www. centraljersey.com. Domestic violence The COVID-19 pandemic makes it dangerous for New Jersey residents to leave their homes. Through everyone is advised to “stay safe, stay home,” for victims of domestic violence, home is the most dangerous place of all, according to
information provided by Women Aware of New Brunswick. “Many adults cannot go to work. Children are not in school. Stores, malls, libraries, gyms, restaurants are closed. Social distancing discourages visits with extended family or friends. Fear, anxiety, frustration and uncertainty are running high. Families are together day and night. In a domestic violence situation, this is the perfect storm to trigger an escalation in abuse,” Susan Dyckman said in a prepared statement. In an ordinary year, domestic violence
agencies in New Jersey serve more than 18,000 victims of abuse, she said. As the state-designated lead domestic violence agency for Middlesex County, Women Aware supports 1 out of every 8 of those victims. “In these unprecedented times, we are seeing an alarming increase in domestic violence. We see it in the types of calls our hotline workers are receiving and in victims’ desperate need for emergency shelter. Lives are in danger,” Dyckman said in the statement.

For 40 years, Women Aware has been providing comprehensive services for victims of domestic violence and their children. It operated the only 24-hour domestic violence emergency shelter in the second largest county in the state. It continually operates at full capacity, and despite the challenges presented by COVID-19, remains fully operational and in compliance with the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and the New Jersey Department of Health guidelines regarding the health and safety of clients and staff. Women Aware is available 24 hours a day, 365 days a year. The hotline, 732-2494504 (toll-free 833-249-4504), provides safety planning, crisis intervention and resources. The on-site staff speaks English, Spanish, Portuguese, Polish, Urdu, Hindi, German and Italian. Hundreds of other languages can be translated in the moment. If it is too dangerous for a victim to reach out directly, a trusted family member or friend can call the hotline. “We need to look out for each other during this crisis. Victims need to know they are not alone,” Dyckman said. “We are here. We can help.” Organ donation
NJ Sharing Network, the non-profit, federally designated organ procurement organization responsible for the recovery of organs and tissue in the state, will observe National Donate Life Month virtually throughout April to heed social distancing rules due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Celebrated in April each year, National Donate Life Month usually features an entire month of local, regional and national activities that encourage Americans to register as organ and tissue donors and to celebrate those who have saved lives through

Responders deserve line of duty death benefits
s a matter of practice, policy and procedure, the vast majority of law enforcement agencies provide for certain employment benefits for all sworn personnel, to include among them a special death benefit status known as a Line of Duty Death. This status occurs when the injuries which caused the officers demise were incurred from actions they took while providing law enforcement services to the community they serve. Being designated as a line of duty death also typically provides the surviving family with greater healthcare and death benefits. Under the normal connotation of this status, these officers have died due to being shot, stabbed, run over by vehicles, or suffering death-related injuries in struggles with suspects. Yet there is now another cause for deaths of law enforcement first responders that should, and must, be considered as a line-of-duty related death: that cause is the death of a law enforcement first responder due to contracting the novel coronavirus. To date, law enforcement and correctional officer first responders in Illinois, Michigan, New York, New Jersey, Florida and California have died after contracting this deadly disease. And officers in at least eight states are known to have tested positive for the virus. It must be accepted and understood that they more than likely contracted this disease while conducting their duty-related services of responding to calls for service in their communities, or serving in prison environments, bringing them into close physical contact with persons who were either carriers of the virus or who had otherwise been exposed to ) the virus. In other words, they were most likely infected with the virus that took their lives while performing their duties as first responders. Law enforcement and correctional officers do not have the privilege of being able to “stay at home” or telecommute for their job. Ours is, unfortunately, a true “feely-touchy, in your face” type of occupation. We must actually be in direct contact and confrontation with people in order to do our job. Yes, it is one that we have gladly espoused for one reason or another, always recognizing that it is a dangerous occupation. We urge all law enforcement and corrections agencies, whether they be municipal, county, state, or federal, to recognize the men and women who serve and

are now dying from this disease as the true heroes that they are, and bestow upon them full line of duty death benefits. We as well demand that they make every effort to insure that these officers have access to the resources and equipment necessary to protect them from incurring this deathdealing disease. Charles P. Wilson National chairman National Association of Black Law Enforcement Officers, Inc.

A NOTICE FROM FRANKLIN MEMORIAL PARK TO OUR FAMILIES AND OUR COMMUNITY.
Your thoughtful planning will protect your family when they need it most
W
e know that this trying time is made even more trying if you need our services. We would like you to know that we are conducting burials, entombments and cremations under the very sensible restrictions that are in place in our state. While many cemeteries in the state have closed their gates and only are allowing Funeral Directors in, at the time of this writing we will try to continue to permit the legal next of kin to enter our park to witness final disposition’s. We will try to continue this as long as we feel we can complete our tasks and insure our staff’s wellbeing. Our grounds and mausoleums are closed to all visitation and gatherings. We know that many people have “extra” time on their hands, but this is not the time to visit cemeteries, but to shelter in place until this unfortunate situation passes.
Please be well, The staff at Franklin Memorial Park NM-00427515

the gift of donation, according to information provided by NJ Sharing Network. While clinical team members continue their around-the-clock efforts to focus on saving and enhancing lives, the organization has developed creative ways to promote its mission virtually in online efforts, according to the statement. NJ Sharing Network will be introducing a host of daily activities through its social media channels, on its website and through targeted emails and mailings to its wide circle of supporters. The organization will be providing social media tools that supporters can use, such as encouraging them to change their Facebook cover photo to a Donate Life Month graphic or add a Donate Life Month frame to their profile picture. Supporters will be asked to share their stories about how organ and tissue donation has improved their lives or why they registered as organ donors. In addition, NJ Sharing Network will be encouraging supporters to incorporate Donate Life Month’s blue and green colors outside of their homes, including creative chalk art on sidewalks and driveways and window decoration and lights, according to the statement. “Donate Life Month has always been
a time to rally around the importance of organ and tissue donation, which we have traditionally done through community events and activities. Although we will not be able to do in-person activities this year, our team of dedicated staff and volunteers are driven to spread our life-saving message using our online platforms, Joe Roth, president and CEO of NJ Sharing Network, said in the statement. In 2019, 1,400 donors gave the gift of life and the number of organ donors surpassed 200 for the first time in New Jersey – 206 individuals saved lives through donation, resulting in 601 organs transplanted, according to the statement. An additional 1,139 donors helped heal and enhance the quality of life of those in need of tissue and eye transplants, while 173 individuals made the decision to give life as living kidney donors, according to the statement. There are nearly 4,000 New Jersey residents awaiting a life-saving transplant, according to the statement. Every day, approximately three people are added to the New Jersey waiting list, and one person dies every three days while waiting for a transplant. One organ donor can save eight lives and one tissue donor can restore health to over 75 people, according to the statement. For more information, visit NJSharingNetwork.org.

ON THE ROAD PETER PERROTTA
2020 GMC Acadia AWD Denali
H
aving grown up on the grimy streets of the Bronx, I don’t pretend to be any kind of expert outdoorsman. I don’t know how to hunt or fish. But, on the other hand, having now lived the majority of my life in South Jersey, I do know my way around the pristine Pinelands, where I have hiked and biked. So, with that in mind, I was able to use my learned skills during the one week I recently road tested the 2020 GMC Acadia AWD Denali. I took it off road in the Pines on a hiking adventure, where its AWD “off road” gear passed the test admirably. This Denali chewed up the sandy, rough Pines trails admirably. On a separate sojourn, with the second and third rows folded, I fit my specialized hybrid bike, easily and without struggling, into the rear cargo area – no need for a bike carrier. I took off for the Schuylkill River Trail in Philly. It was quite easy to take the bike in and out of the back of this Acadia without much struggle. This six seat SUV is one of those rugged, off road capable vehicles that also exhibits some of those “high life” qualities it takes its namesake from. Acadia National Park in Maine is known for its splendid beauty. It’s mountain ranges feature some of the highest elevations along the Atlantic Highlands. The Denali is the name of the highest mountain peak in the United States in Alaska. “Alaska has long been a magnet for dreamers and misfits, people who think the unsullied enormity of the Last Frontier will patch all the holes in their lives,” wrote author Jon Krakauer in his riveting outdoor book, “Into the Wild.” While this 2020 GMC Acadia AWD Denali won’t patch all of those holes in your life, its versatility will certainly fill a lot of the various needs the typical SUV buyer is looking for when they go shopping for a mid-sized, three row truck like this.
SUBMITTED PHOTO
2020 GMC Acadia Denali
This SUV, like many in its class these days, is rugged enough to withstand the rigors of an active, multi-family use lifestyle. At the same time, it has some elegance and charm to it. The standard version of the Acadia Denali has enough high end technology and style inside to make it glamourous. The Acadia is available in five models: SL, SLE, SLT, AT4 and the Denali. The Denali I tested is the top of the line model that carries a base price of $48,300. With options and destination charges, the MSRP sticker price on my tester was $52,435. The options include: a technology package ($1,795); a trailering package ($695); $495 for the Satin Steel Metallic paint and $1,195 for destination charge. The trailering package includes: a rear camera mirror with washer; advanced adaptive cruise control; enhanced automatic emergency braking and HD surround vision. There are three different engine options: a 2.0 liter, 4 cylinder turbo (230 horsepow-
er); 2.5 liter, 4 cylinder (193 horsepower) and a 3.6 liter, V6 (310 horsepower). My tester featured the 3.6 liter, V6 coupled with a new for this year 9 speed transmission. I found this engine and transmission combination to be very pleasant. This vehicle shifts smoothly and has more than enough power to make aggressive lane changes and quick highway passes. Of the 2020 GMC Acadia Denali, Consumer Reports, writes: “The Acadia is a very pleasant three row SUV, particularly in the Denali trim. The ride is steady and composed, and handling is responsive” I would wholeheartedly agree with CR on those points. This year’s version of the GMC Acadia Denali was some significant changes. First and foremost is the new exterior design look. It features a new rugged looking front grille and rear profile, which I find give it a more refined and less boxy look. It also has, this year, GMC’s newer “C-shaped” front headlights, which also give it a more elegant touch as well. On the inside, one of the more notice-
able changes, is the automatic gear shifter, which is now push button and located in front of the center console and below the center screen infotainment screen. I must admit, this threw me for a loop when I first hopped in, but once I got used to it, it was no big deal. Overall, the bold, geometric design of the interior of this Acadia is at first, not that appealing. But, like the face of the bulldog pup, it does grow on you. The EPA fuel rating for this Acadia is 21 miles per gallon overall – 18 mpg in city driving and 25 on the highway. The average annual fuel cost comes in at $1,950 ,as it is rated at as using 4.8 gallons per 100 miles. This vehicle has not been rated for the government’s 5-star safety crash test yet. At a base price of $48,300 this Denali comes chock full of some impressive standard equipment including: 20-inch, ultra bright, aluminum wheels; GMC infotainment system; navigation; 8-inch touch screen; remote start; heated leather seats and steering wheel; ventilated front driver and passenger seats; tri-zone climate control; power liftgate; front and rear park assist and a lot more. As CR reports: “This family-friendly SUV is very quiet, the front seats are comfortable and the infotainment system is easy to use. The outboard second row seats can slide and tilt forward, even with a child seat in place.” I would have to agree with the usually fair and unbiased CR. Overall, my impression of the 2020 GMC Acadia Denali is quite positive. I feel that any consumer who is seriously considering an upscale, three row SUV of this size would be lax to not give it serious consideration.
