North Brunswick Board of Education member will now join the Township Council. Claribel Cortes was chosen by members of the governing body during the council meeting on April 6. The seat on the council opened after Councilman Bob Corbin passed away on March 15 after a battle with cancer. He had served for 18 years. According to the municipal vacancy law, as cited by Township Attorney Ronald Gordon, because Corbin was a member of the Democratic party in town, the Democrats had the ability to provide three potential candidates to the council to fill the unexpired term. The term Corbin was serving will end on Dec. 31. The position will be filled for the next three-year term during the general election in November. The new term will begin on Jan. 1, 2021 and run through Dec. 31, 2023. Local Democrats provided the names of Cortes, Concetta Adamo and Lorraine Gagliano to the council members on April 6. Councilwoman Amanda Guadagnino nominated Cortes and Councilman Bob Davis seconded the motion. Council members then voted to appoint Cortes to the seat for nine months. “Thank you so much for your (Continued on page 7)

Middlesex County has access to saliva test for COVID-19

M

iddlesex County, in partnership with RUCDR Infinite Biologics, RWJBarnabas Health and Accurate Diagnostic Labs, are on the forefront of innovation in the fight against COVID-19, offering for the first-time a saliva-based test to the community on a mass scale. Introduced recently by RUCDR and ADL, this saliva test, newly approved by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA), is a breakthrough that will accelerate not only the volume of testing per day but provide results in 24-48 hours, according to information provided by Middlesex County. Starting April 15, Middlesex County will be the first county government in New Jersey to provide this new test widely in a drive-through setting and at no cost to local first responders and residents. “We are proud of our deep partnerships with RUCDR and Accurate Labs as well as RWJBarnabas Health, who have been on the frontline of this fight against COVID-19 in New Jersey. Middlesex County has built the operations and infrastructure from the ground up to enable us to utilize our extensive partnerships to provide innovative solutions to our community of first responders and residents. Thankfully we have a rare advantage in such a critical time to be able to rapidly deploy increased testing capabilities and accelerated results, while protecting our frontline workers,” Middlesex County Freeholder Director Ronald G. Rios said in the statement. “We believe our stateof-the-art drive-thru model can set a benchmark for testing that can benefit the state and other counties, as we all look for ways to better safeguard our communities in this crisis.” “As the world faces a dire shortage in testing supplies, RUCDR is bringing forth a game-changing response to dramatically increase testing of patients, offering both time and cost efficiencies. With this breakthrough, we have the ability to track and trace infected individuals faster, ultimately mitigating the spread of COVID-19. Moreover, the sheer volume of specimens to be collected will aid in the development of a vaccine and new therapies. For this reason, our partnership with Middlesex County is pivotal for our ongoing research as mass testing

via a drive-thru setting will generate the samples that will provide more accurate and timely information in curtailing the spread of COVID-19,” Andrew Brooks, PhD, COO and director of technology development for RUCDR, said in the statement. The new saliva test developed by RUCDR and Accurate Diagnostic Labs has several significant advantages over the nasal or throat swab test, which include: 100% accuracy in predicting the presence of SARS-CoV2 COVID-19 when compared to currently available swab testing, a simple method of collection (spit and seal), less personal protection equipment required for collection, expedited test results (24-48 hours), reduced exposure and risk to healthcare personnel, high through-put of specimens (up to 10,000 per day), improved staffing requirements as multiple types of healthcare professionals can be used for supervised sample collection, and non-invasive pain-free procedure for sample collection, according to the statement. “Accurate Diagnostic’s capabilities, steeped in a tradition of offering the latest diagnostic technology offerings, is proud to expand our relationship with a local, world-renowned institution in RUCDR Infinite Biologics and now with our own local government, Middlesex County. Together we can deliver the necessary COVID-19 testing at a much broader scale throughout the County, particularly to our front-line health care workers, first responders, and residents by utilizing these new collection and testing methods,” Accurate Diagnostic Labs CEO Rupen Patel said in the statement. “RWJBarnabas Health continues to work with our partners at Rutgers University and with Middlesex County government, as we are all searching for pioneering solutions to help combat the COVID-19 disease. In this context, we are pleased to be the first health system to receive and deploy the new salivabased test innovated by RUCDR in partnership with ADL. This advance will directly benefit our greater community that will now be able to access faster and more accurate testing results, to bring us (Continued on page 4)

Neighborhood unity The Patton Street Neighbors held their first Shout Out on April 9 as they stepped outside in front of their homes with flashlights and waved to their neighbors on their block with a shout out of “Be Kind, Be Safe.” The Patton Street Neighbors have scheduled their next shout out for 8 p.m. on April 16 with their slogan signs stating “Stay Safe, Stay Home” to place in front of their homes. The organizers hope this will be a model for the North Brunswick community to set aside one night where all neighbors can come out for five minutes in front of their homes to wave to each neighbor to check on their well-being and signify unity and hope during these trying times. CytoSorbents authorized to use therapy in patients with COVID

C

ytoSorbents Corporation, a critical care immunotherapy leader commercializing its CytoSorb blood purification technology to treat cytokine storm and deadly inflammation in critically-ill and cardiac surgery patients around the world, announced the United States Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has granted Emergency Use Authorization (EUA) of CytoSorb for use in patients with COVID-19 infection. Under the EUA, CytoSorbents can make CytoSorb available, through commercial sales, to all hospitals in the United States for use in patients, 18 years of age or older, with confirmed COVID-19 infection who are admitted to the intensive care unit (ICU) with confirmed or imminent respiratory failure who have early acute lung injury or acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS), severe disease, or lifethreatening illness resulting in respiratory failure, septic shock, and/or multiple organ dysfunction or failure, according to infor-

mation provided by the company on April 13. Patients with COVID-19 infection often exhibit a cytokine storm with severe hyperinflammation that can contribute to worsened injury to vital organs like the lungs, heart and the kidneys. The goal of CytoSorb therapy is to reduce cytokine storm and the deadly inflammatory response through blood purification so that this injury may be mitigated or prevented. CytoSorb is plug-and-play compatible with the most commonly used blood purification machines or pumps in the intensive care unit used to treat COVID-19 patients, including hemoperfusion, hemodialysis, continuous renal replacement therapy (CRRT), and extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO) machines, according to the statement. “We greatly appreciate the FDA’s recognition, through this EUA, of the (Continued on page 6)

potential of CytoSorb and extracorporeal blood purification to help patients stricken with this terrible illness. It was clear in this truly collaborative process with the FDA, that the agency was committed to urgently providing physicians and patients with new treatment options in the fight against COVID-19. We plan to continue working with the FDA to help as many patients as possible,” Vincent Capponi, chief operating officer of CytoSorbents, said in the statement. “As a U.S. based company with CytoSorb device manufacturing in New Jersey, we are eager to expand the availability of CytoSorb to U.S. hospitals and patients as a treatment option to fight cytokine storm and deadly inflammation that is believed to exacerbate COVID-19 infection. With more than 555,000 documented coronavirus infections, the U.S. leads the world with over 22,000 deaths, and emergently needs new therapies to reduce the severity of this disease. This is important not just to reduce poor clinical outcomes and mortality, but to also alleviate the bottleneck for scarce resources such as ventilators and ECMO in the treatment of these criticallyill patients,” Dr. Phillip Chan, PhD, chief executive officer of CytoSorbents, said in the statement. “CytoSorb has been used in critically-ill and cardiac surgery patients in more than 80,000 human treatments abroad, to help treat the same complications seen in COVID-19 patients such as lung failure, shock and multi-organ failure. With CRRT, and in many cases ECMO, being standard in ICUs worldwide, CytoSorb can be easily implemented with minimal training. More than 200 COVID-19 patients have been treated with CytoSorb outside the U.S., resulting in the inclusion of CytoSorb into the COVID-19 treatment guidelines in Italy, Panama and China. We have now received more than 70 requests from major U.S. hospitals to use CytoSorb in COVID-19 patients. Under the EUA, we plan to ramp the availability of CytoSorb

in a controlled manner, to clinical centers that will work with us to generate data and leverage our knowledge of how to use the device most effectively. We are pleased to collaborate with the FDA to make this possible.” According to the EUA letter from the FDA, “There are no FDA approved, licensed or cleared device treatments for COVID-19. Based on bench performance testing and reported clinical experience, FDA has concluded that the CytoSorb device may be effective at treating certain patients with confirmed COVID-19 by removing various pro-inflammatory cytokines from their blood. FDA believes, based on the totality of scientific evidence available, that the removal of pro-inflammatory cytokines may ameliorate cytokine storm due to the overabundance of pro-inflammatory cytokines and, in turn, provide clinical benefit,” adding that “It is reasonable to believe that the CytoSorb device may be effective in treating patients 18 years of age or older with confirmed COVID-19 admitted to the ICU with confirmed or imminent respiratory failure, when used consistently with the Scope of Authorization of this letter.” As referenced in the EUA letter, CytoSorb can be used on patients 18 years of age or older, with confirmed COVID-19 who are admitted to the ICU with confirmed or imminent respiratory failure who have any one of the following conditions: a) Early acute lung injury (ALI)/early acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS); or b) Severe disease, defined as: 1) dyspnea, 2) respiratory frequency ≥ 30/min, 3) blood oxygen saturation ≤ 93%, 4) partial pressure of arterial oxygen to fraction of inspired oxygen ratio <ParaStyle:nmg-body>5) lung infiltrates > 50% within 24 to 48 hours; or c) Life-threatening disease, defined as: 1) respiratory failure, 2) septic shock, and/or 3) multiple organ dysfunction or failure. COMMUNITY BULLETIN BOARD South Brunswick High School will hold its annual mental health fair virtually from 10 a.m. to noon on April 24. The fair’s theme is Stop the Stigma, Stamp out the Stress. There will be three live presenters. One is a local therapist who will talk about anxiety and the stigma surrounding mental health. Another will be speaking live from a hospital in Texas; he will talk about COVID-19 and how he sees it relating to mental health from an ER doctor’s perspective. The third presenter is a clinical neuropsychologist comedian.

There will also be several pre-recorded presentations, such as a stress ball making demonstration, aromatherapy, strength and conditioning, a therapist, student presentations, Zentangle, music therapy and plant therapy. There will also be a virtual mental health resource table from businesses such as Princeton House, High Focus and other mental health facilities. The link for the mental health fair is yet to be determined, and will be available via social media by April 23.

nomination and thank you for voting for me. I look forward to working with everyone, and please stay safe through this (crisis). I know we are going to come out of this stronger together,” said Cortes, who joined the virtual meeting via phone. Mayor Francis “Mac” Womack said the new councilwoman will be sworn in properly, virtually, during the next council meeting. “Congrats, Claribel. Welcome aboard,” council President Ralph Andrews said. Cortes has lived in North Brunswick for 16 years. She is a media and business executive with more than 22 years of experience in the field of Broadcast/Digital Journalism. She volunteers as a coach for Girls on the Run, an organization that implements an experience-based curriculum that integrates running for girls in grades 3-5. As an avid marathoner, she also helped fundraise for many organizations such as the American Cancer Society, Team for Kids and Camp Shriver. She is also the vice-chair of the statewide Hispanic Chamber of Commerce. Cortes joined the township school board in April 2017 to fill an unexpired term. “The work of the Board of Education is not the reflection of one person but a collective group, and I am proud to have taken part in many of the accomplishments of the BOE during my tenure. As the chair of the Community Relations Committee, we launched various community think tanks and increased our social media communication along with other improvements to our digital interface. As a member of the policy committee, we worked to ensure that our policies were aligned with the needs of our district and our Department of Education guidelines. Another significant undertaking was working towards closing the school funding gap and finding new ways to improve our infrastructure without increasing taxes. The school district was able to secure a $14.2 million Energy Savings Improvement Program grant to fund at no cost to the taxpayers for the following work at current schools,” she said. She said she has learned many lessons from her time on the school board that will help her on the council. “Many of my efforts within the BOE, such as community outreach, increased For a complete list of community events, visit www.centraljersey.com. communication, public policy and business partnerships, are all skills that are going to be transferable and add to the initiatives within North Brunswick,” she said. She said she entered the political realm at this time so she could do more within the community. “I know that my diverse background and 20-plus years in business, organizational management, communication and community development will help our town move forward into the future. I would like to see North Brunswick continue to be a multigenerational town where grandparents can afford to live not too far away from their grandkids while also making this town appealing to a new generation of

NS SENTINEL 7

families,” she said. Cortes said she already has many issues she would like to focus on as a councilperson. “As a member of the council and taxpayer in North Brunswick, I believe it’s only fair that we have proper funding for our schools. I will continue to advocate for closing the funding gap for our school district. As it relates to programs, my goal is also to find new and innovative ways to secure grants and partnerships to help support our community, especially our senior citizens. The completion of the train station is critical now more than ever. I used to commute over two hours every day to my job, and I know how important it is to

give our residents the ability to have options of their choice of transposition. The new train station will provide our residents the ability to have access to faster transportation options, alleviate the traffic congestion, save time, money, create jobs, and will also add to our property values,” she said. According to North Brunswick Superintendent of Schools Dr. Brian Zychowski, once the school district receives notice of Cortes’s resignation from the school board, the vacant position can be advertised and the board can proceed to fill the opening. Novenas Miraculous Invocation to St. Therese O Glorious St. Therese, whom Almighty God has raised up to aid and inspire the human family, I implore your Miraculous Intercession. You are so powerful in obtaining every need of body and spirit from the Heart of God. Holy Mother Church proclaims you “Prodigy of Miracles... the Greatest Saint of Modern Times. Now I fervently beseech you to answer my petition (mention here) and to carry out your promises of spending Heaven doing good upon earth... Of letting fall from Heaven a Shower of Roses. Little Flower, give me your childlike faith, to see the Face of God in the people and experiences of my life, and to love God with full confidence. St. Therese, my Carmelite Sister, I will fulfill your plea “to be made known everywhere and I will continue to lead others to Jesus through you. Amen.

R.G. St. Therese Novena O little Therese of the Child Jesus, please pick for me a rose from the heavenly gardens and send it to me as a message of love. O little Flower of Jesus, ask God today to grant the favors I now place with confidence in your hands.. (mention specific requests) St. Therese, help me to always believe as you did, in God’s great love for me, so that I might imitate your “Little Way each day. Amen.

PRAYER IS POWERFUL Oh, most beautiful flower of Mount Carmel, fruitful vine of splendor of Heaven, Blessed Mother of the son of God, Immaculate Virgin, assist me in my necessity. Oh, Star of the Sea, help me and show me herein you are my Mother. Oh, Holy Mary Mother of God, Queen of Heaven and Earth! I humbly beseech you from the bottom of my heart to succor me in this petition. There are none that can withstand your power. Oh, show me herein you are my Mother. Oh Mary conceived without sin pray for us who have recourse in thee (3Xs). Holy Mother, I place this cause in your hands (3Xs). Holy Spirit, you who solve all problems, light all roads so I can attain my goal. You who gave me the divine gift to forgive and forget all evil against me and that in all instances in my life you are with me, I want in this short prayer to thank you for all things as you confirm once again that I never want to be separated from you in eternal glory. Thank you for your mercy towards me and mine. + Say this prayer 3 consecutive days and publish prayer after petition is granted. Do not despair. Additional advice and petition. Pray the Rosary regularly. F.A.M.

Prayer to St. Jude Most holy Apostle St. Jude, faithful servant and friend of Jesus the name of the traitor who delivered the beloved Master into the hands of His enemies, has caused you to be forgotten by many but the Church honors and prays to you universally as the patron of hopeless cases, of things despaired of. Pray for me who am so miserable; make use I implore you of that particular privilege accorded to you to bring visible and speedy help, where help is almost despaired of. Come to my assistance in this great need that I may receive the consolations and help of Heaven in all my necessities, tribulations and sufferings particularly (here make your request) and that I may bless God with you and all the elect forever. I PROMISE you, blessed St. Jude to be ever mindful of this great favor and I will never cease to honor you as my special and powerful patron and to do all in my power to encourage devotion to you. Amen. May the most just, most high and most adorable Will of God be in all things done, praised and magnified, forever and ever. Amen.
