increase of $7,630. The tax rate for 2020 was 8.4 cents per $100 of assessed valuation and there will not be an increase in the tax rate for 2021. Thus, taxes for fire protection will remain the same for taxpayers covered by the district. The owner of a home in Kendall Park that has an average assessed value of $193,230 will pay $161 for fire protection this year.
The budget passed, with 251 votes in favor of the budget, and 50 against, according to information provided by Coordinator Chris Perez. Kris Olson and Sarah Berezansky were re-elected to their fire commissioner positions. A little girl lives on through one big wish April 13 ceremony was the first wish Make-A-Wish New Jersey headquarters hosted in more than a year By MADELEINE MACCAR Correspondent
W
hen a few cloudy, dreary days finally gave way to the springtime sun, it shone on the first wish that Make-A-Wish New Jersey’s headquarters hosted in more than a year. The private ceremony, held April 13, honored the legacy of 2-and-a-half-yearold Penelope, a brave young girl who spent her short life battling neuroblastoma, a type of cancer that attacks nerve tissue and most commonly affects children. She passed away in February. But Penny’s legacy will endure with the posthumous granting of her big-hearted wish: a $10,000 donation to Tackle Kids Cancer, the Hackensack Meridian Children’s Health Children’s Cancer Institute’s philanthropic initiative that raises funds for both pediatric cancer research and programs for its children’s hospital, where Penny was treated. “Penny liked to help around the house, she liked to help the doctors, so we were thinking this could be her way of helping with the future of pediatric cancer research,” Penny’s mom, Cassandra Izquierdo, said after the ceremony held at Make-a-Wish headquarters, the Samuel & Josephine Plumeri Wishing Place, in Monroe Township. The day was packed with emotional reunions, an outpouring of gratitude and a surprise visit from former New York Giants quarterback Eli Manning as Penny’s parents, members of her medical team and Make-A-Wish representatives gathered to celebrate a big wish from a little girl. “I was a little nervous at first: There were so many people and cameras, but everyone helped us feel comfortable really quickly,” said Penny’s father Jack Lindsay. Tom Weatherall has been Make-AWish New Jersey’s president and CEO for 16 of his 19 years with the organization. He’s seen nearly 10,000 wishes come true in that time and, while he says that each child, family and circumstance made every one of those wishes unique, one like Penny’s is downright uncommon. “Typically, we grant wishes from the four most popular categories: I wish to go, I wish to be, I wish to have, I wish to meet,” he said. “And then there’s this fifth

rare category: I wish to give. We only see a handful a year. Penny’s parents felt very strongly that anything that could be done to avoid another family from having to experience what their young, precious daughter did at the dawn of her life.” Izquierdo and Lindsay say it’s no surprise their daughter was thinking of others, which is why they so ardently followed through on doing something to support the facility that took care of their daughter. “Penelope was very independent and liked to do things for herself, which I think is why she wanted to help all the time—she wanted to learn how to do things and then do them her own way,” Izquierdo said. “She was also very nurturing. She had a lot of baby dolls, and she loved her babies. She was always taking care of them and feeding them and rocking them to sleep. I always told her she was such a good mommy to them.” For the Make-A-Wish family, nearly four decades and tens of thousands of wishes are daily reminders that all it takes is one gesture to make a huge impact. “The experiences that our staff and board and myself and our volunteers and our donors have witnessed for almost 40 years of operation in New Jersey are what inspire us,” Weatherall said. “Penny’s wish was one of the most inspirational. These families draw a strength that is quite incredible, so you see, feel and ob-

serve something that is extraordinary. To be around people like that time and time and time again, I find, is the most fulfilling experience, and it makes you want to do them justice.” If Penny’s wish demonstrated the depth of her unusual empathy, having Manning there to help make it happen spoke of how often and generously the G-Men give back, too. “The Giants ownership has created a culture that, at every level of the organization, embraces, celebrates and welcomes our kids: To say that they’re one of the greatest wish-granting organizations, there’s truth behind that,” Weatherall said. “Every time a child wants to meet their favorite player, what’s really going to happen is they’ll meet the entire team, speak to them, get into the huddle and give a pregame speech. … They’ll be on the sidelines so the players can run over and give them high-fives, then be invited up to the suite to watch the game.” While Weatherall says it’s absolutely expected that the Giants will “go above and beyond” for Make-A-Wish children, Manning’s in-person support absolutely bowled over Penny’s parents. “I turned around and Eli Manning was there!” Izquierdo said with a laugh. “I had seen him before on a Zoom call I did with another foundation for Penelope, and I thought that was amazing—but then he

showed up for this, and that was just beyond amazing. He was so genuine and really kind, and I think Penelope would have loved him.” And for the Make-A-Wish New Jersey family, Penny’s donation was not only a reminder of how much love a young heart has to give but also a glimmer of optimism for the future. “Every wish is different and unique because we’ve never done it for that child or that family before,” Weatherall said. “But what made this one so incredibly special was the story of Penny’s family wanting to honor her legacy as we’re—hopefully— coming out of this pandemic. The actual fulfilling of a wish as well as the symbolism of the light at the end of the tunnel was everything that castle was built to do.” Izquierdo and Lindsay agree that it was one very special day that Penny made possible. “It was amazing, it was perfect,” Izquierdo said. “Tackle Kids Cancer actually funded the clinical trial that Penelope was a part of. We need more clinical trials to find a cure, and the fact that Penelope was able to make a difference by giving back was really special.” Visit wish.org/nj for more information about Make-A-Wish New Jersey.

Woman faces charges in homicide at Farrington Inn
A
dditional charges have been filed against two individuals related to a homicide in North Brunswick last month. On April 27, Demond Gray, 43, of New Brunswick, and Katura Williams, 40, of Sayreville, were charged and served with complaints for one count of first-degree murder committed during the course of a robbery, one count of firstdegree robbery, and one count of second-degree conspiracy to commit robbery, according
to information provided by Middlesex County Prosecutor Yolanda Ciccone and Chief Joseph Battaglia of the North Brunswick Police Department. On March 21, Gray was charged with murder and Williams was charged with obstruction and hindering Gray’s apprehension. However, an ongoing investigation by Detective Keri Shutz of the North Brunswick Police Department and Detective Mark Morris of the Middlesex County Prosecutor’s Office led to the issuance
of additional complaints, according to the new statement. On March 20 at noon, officers from the North Brunswick Police Department responded to the Farrington Inn following an emergency call for an unresponsive male.Upon their arrival, authorities located Abdul Conteh, 60, of Somerset, who showed signs of physical injury, according to officials. Conteh was later pronounced dead at the scene. The investigation revealed Gray allegedly assaulted and

Students back in class on all five MCVTS campuses In-person classes have resumed on all five campuses of the Middlesex County Vocational and Technical Schools. Since April 19, both academic and career-education classes have been held in person, although students still have the option of virtual education. Since September, career-education classes had been held in person five days a week, while academic classes were virtual. Students now are attending half-day sessions five days a week on the East Brunswick, Perth Amboy and Piscataway campuses for both career and academic classes. They are dismissed at noon and, after a break for lunch, have one more virtual class in the afternoon, according to information provided by the school district. “MCVTS welcomes our students to in-person education,” Superintendent of Schools Dianne Veilleux said in the statement. “This pandemic has reminded us of the crucial role of the interaction between teachers and students. Our students and staff have worked relentlessly to continue public education and have done tremendously creative and amazing things over the past year. “Restoring our school community with all its joys and adventures has been a work of love for all of us here,” she added. “High
school students working collaboratively can make miracles happen in our schools. Career technical education relies on experiential learning, and it has persisted and thrived throughout this most challenging year.” Assistant Superintendent of Schools Jeffrey Bicsko said all state guidelines regarding the wearing of masks and social distancing are being followed. At the Middlesex County Academy for Science, Mathematics and Engineering Technologies in Edison students are attending all-day sessions, with the help of space provided by Middlesex College to promote social distancing. Students at the Middlesex County Academy for Allied Health and Biomedical Sciences in Woodbridge are attending full sessions in a hybrid program of in-person and virtual classes. The spring sports – baseball, softball and tennis – are in full swing, while other extracurricular activities are still virtual. All five campuses will have a prom for seniors, using an outdoor dance floor. Plans are under way for in-person outdoor graduations, similar to those held last June. “The schools have a pulse again,” Bicsko said in the statement. “It’s nice to see
the students and the teachers reacting to getting somewhat back to normal. Our staff has been so supportive and dedicated in adjusting to the demands of the pandemic.” “I’m glad, as a teacher – it’s so hard to teach to a screen,” East Brunswick Campus graphic design teacher Jamie Sobolewski said in the statement. “I love class participation. Face-to-face instruction is very important. When the students are here, they are happy.” Several of her students agreed. “I’m very excited,” said Annabelle Medina, a junior from Edison. “It’s good to have some normalcy after all the restrictions.” “I missed seeing my friends,” said Bethany Trimble, a sophomore from Metuchen. “Now that we’re back, I can talk to my friends every day.” “I missed the routine,” said Jay BerlinLangston, a junior from Highland Park. “I missed having a set schedule every day.” “When you’re at school, you tend to get things done better,” said Navia Carpio of Old Bridge. Online applications are being accepted for eighth-graders to attend the East Brunswick, Perth Amboy and Piscataway campuses in the fall. More information is available at www.mcvts.net

We will focus on helping you become more aware of how important your attitude and behavior are in determining the reactions and behaviors of the person you are caring for. Self-awareness and self-assessment will be used to help caregivers acknowledge their own status and emotional state. We will also discuss the importance of recognizing “burn out” and stress to help you determine if you are able to find or create moments of joy or if you may need assistance with respite care and time away to rest and re-establish relationships that allow joy to be part of the day.

North Brunswick man admits conspiring to commit bank fraud A New York woman, an Ohio man and a New Jersey man admitted their roles in a large-scale conspiracy to commit bank fraud in states including New Jersey, New York, Pennsylvania, Maryland, Virginia and Michigan. Erm Ayaz, 36, of Bayside, Brooklyn, pleaded guilty today by videoconference before Chief Judge Freda L. Wolfson to an information charging her with one count of conspiracy to commit bank fraud, according to information provided by Acting Attorney Rachael A. Honig on April 29. Syed Abbas, 32, of Westerville, Ohio, and Habib Majid, 35, of North Brunswick, pleaded guilty before Wolfson on April 27, and April 21, respectively, to informations that charged them each with one count of conspiracy to commit bank fraud, according to the statement. Ayaz, Abbas, and Majid are among seven individuals that have pleaded guilty as part of the scheme. According to documents filed in this case and statements made in court, from
2018 through April 2020, Ayaz, Majid, Abbas and others conspired to defraud several major banks and electronic merchant processors. They established bank accounts associated with sham entities that had no legitimate purpose and issued checks payable to other shell companies associated with the criminal organization, knowing that the payor accounts had insufficient funds. The conspirators also conducted numerous fraudulent credit card and debit card transactions between shell companies to credit payee accounts and fraudulently overdraw payor accounts. Members of the conspiracy also used these shell companies to execute temporary refund credits, commonly referred to as “charge-backs,” to checking accounts associated with the criminal organization, where no prior legitimate transaction had occurred. Members of the criminal organization withdrew the “existing” funds (through ATMs or bank tellers) that banks and/or merchant processors had credited to the
payee bank accounts at the time of the fraudulent transaction. Because the conspirators withdrew the credited funds from the payee accounts before the banks could recognize the fraudulent transactions, the banks and merchant processors were left with substantial losses. The investigation revealed that Ayaz, Majid, Abbas, and other conspirators attempted to defraud financial institutions and merchant processors of approximately $10 million dollars and did in fact cause a loss of approximately $3.5 million. The conspiracy charges which Ayaz,

Abbas, and Majid pleaded guilty carry a maximum potential penalty of 30 years in prison, a fine of $1 million or twice the gross gain to the defendants or loss to others, whichever is greater. Oh, most beautiful flower of Mount Carmel, fruitful vine of splendor of Heaven, Blessed Mother of the son of God, Immaculate Virgin, assist me in my necessity. Oh, Star of the Sea, help me and show me herein you are my Mother. Oh, Holy Mary Mother of God, Queen of Heaven and Earth! I humbly beseech you from the bottom of my heart to succor me in this petition. There are none that can withstand your power. Oh, show me herein you are my Mother. Oh Mary conceived without sin pray for us who have recourse in thee (3Xs). Holy Mother, I place this cause in your hands (3Xs). Holy Spirit, you who solve all problems, light all roads so I can attain my goal. You who gave me the divine gift to forgive and forget all evil against me and that in all instances in my life you are with me, I want in this short prayer to thank you for all things as you confirm once again that I never want to be separated from you in eternal glory. Thank you for your mercy towards me and mine. + Say this prayer 3 consecutive days and publish prayer after petition is granted. Do not despair. Additional advice and petition. Pray the Rosary regularly.

There are rankings within each state and within each census-designated metropolitan area that has three or more high schools, as well as the Best STEM Schools ranking and comprehensive Best Charter Schools and Best Magnet Schools rankings, according to the statement. The Best High Schools rankings, available online only, are produced in conjunction with RTI International, a global re-

U.S. News receives AP and IB data directly from the College Board and International Baccalaureate, respectively, for use in the rankings. The state assessment data and graduation rates are from each state, and other data comes from the U.S. Department of Education Common Core of Data. Smith. The tax rate for 2021 will be 4.4 cents per $100 of assessed valuation. The tax rate was the same in 2020. For a residence assessed at the average value of $192,638, a taxpayer in Fire District No. 2 will pay $85 for fire protection this year. The budget passed by a vote of 316 for and 79 against, according to Scott Smith, fire district coordinator for South Brunswick Township Fire District No. 2/Monmouth Junction Volunteer Fire Department. Fire District No. 3’s budget for 2021 is $836,429, with $597,766 to be raised through taxation. The tax levy has increased by $11,800 (2%) because the fire commissioners are using $186,500 of unrestricted fund balance to balance the budget, according to Commissioner Agostino Racanati. The fire district’s tax rate has increased from 9.9 cents per $100 of assessed valuation in 2020 to 10 cents per $100 of assessed valuation in 2021. The owner of a home assessed at $200,000 in the fire district will pay $200 for fire protection this year. The budget passed, with 121 “yes” votes and 24 “no” votes. Jane Eisenmann and Racanati were reelected as commissioners.
