ive Central Jersey high school students have started their own initiative, Students Supporting Central Jersey, dedicated to facilitating safe communication between COVID-19 patients and their families. Hiba Jamil, Anisah Mahmood, Simra Teens Arshad, Hafsa Rahaman and in action Yasmeen Sakr, who attend NoorUl-Iman School in South Brunswick, have started a GoFundMe to raise money to purchase iPads so that the patients can video conference with loved ones. Additionally, iPads will also be used by health professionals to practice telemedicine and conduct virtual appointments in an attempt to mitigate the spread of the virus. Currently, hospitals have instituted a non-visitation policy, meaning that most COVID-19 patients have little to no contact with family and friends during their medical struggle; many even pass away in this condition. These iPad donations are coordinated with Saint Peter’s University Hospital in New Brunswick, Penn Medicine Princeton Medical Center, and Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital in New Brunswick and Somerset. As of press time, $6,400 was raised. Funds can be donated at www.gofundme.com/f/hospital-ipad-fund. For more information, or to nominate another hospital in need of iPads, email sscentraljersey@gmail.com.

The programs will air on North Brunswick Channel 15 at 11 a.m., 1 p.m., 4 p.m., 6 p.m. and (pending township meeting) 9 p.m. May 20-24. • A wartime research project by students from the middle and high schools will air at the same times and dates. • The 2020 Memorial Day Ceremony will air at 11 a.m., 1 p.m., 4 p.m., 6 p.m. and (pending township meeting) 9 p.m. May 25-31. • The 41st annual North Brunswick Memorial Day 5K Run/Walk 2020 is now virtual. Complete the 5K anywhere, anytime, through May 25. Registration fee is $5. Sign up at run signup.com/race/NJ/northbrunswick/ NB5K The leaderboard will be shown at approximately 3 p.m. on May 25 on the North Brunswick Department of Parks, Recreation & Community Services Facebook and Instagram pages, as well as the township website. • Residents are asked to hang flags from their homes, and/or chalk their driveways, sharing a message of support for the sacrifices made by those who served in wartime and honoring lives that were lost. For more information, email Lou Ann Benson of the North Brunswick Department of Parks, Recreation & Community Services at lbenson@northbrunswicknj. gov. Bentley Community Services (BCS) has been selected as a beneficiary of the Stop & Shop Community Bag Program at Stop & Shop, 24 Summerfield Blvd., Dayton section of South Brunswick, for May. BCS is a non-profit providing for families, seniors and individuals in need by creating access to fresh, healthy foods weekly, offsetting/eliminating weekly grocery bills so they can be self-sufficient. The center is located in South Brunswick but services Central Jersey. BCS will receive a $1 donation every time the reusable Community Bag ($2.50) is purchased at the Dayton location during May, unless otherwise directed by the customer through the Giving Tag attached to the bag. BCS is located at 4064 Route 1 in Monmouth Junction. For more information, call 908-227-0684, or visit www. bentleycommunityservices.org or www.
facebook.com/bentleycommunityservices/ For more information on the Stop & Shop Community Bag Program, visit stopandshop.bags4mycause.com. Karma Cat + Zen Dog Rescue Society is holding Fetch & Pounce, a monthlong virtual fun run/walk/bike event during May to benefit local homeless animals. The event, in partnership with Pets 2 the Rescue, allows participants to take part in a virtual one-mile or 5K run/walk or 5-mile bike ride during the entire month to raise money for Karma Cat + Zen Dog. Registration costs $13.25 and $10 of the registration fee is donated to the animals taken care of by Karma Cat + Zen Dog. To participate, register at pets2therescue.org/northeast and choose Karma Cat + Zen Dog Rescue Society as the participating shelter and team. Participants then complete their run/walk/bike distance while observing social distancing protocols, and can either submit their time via the IYR Virtual mobile app or manually online. Participants can RSVP to Karma Cat + Zen Dog’s Facebook event page for the race for fun and inspiring content from fellow team members. For more information, visit https:// karmacatzendog.org/event/fetchpouncevirtual/. Although Karma Cat + Zen Dog’s adoption facilities in Milltown and North Brunswick are currently closed, many cats currently reside in volunteer foster homes and those interested in adopting can browse available pets online at https:// karmacatzendog.org/adoption/ and contact the rescue to set up a virtual meeting. The North Brunswick community is invited to purchase a #NBSTRONG tshirt, with 100% of the proceeds directly benefitting the North Brunswick Food Bank. Shirts are $20 and available in children’s, ladies and men’s sizes. Orders are due by May 22. Payment can be made via Venmo or Paypal via forms.gle/8TtcGyDupe3hhv1V7. Orders will be shipped directly. Forever changed, the South Brunswick Library is now closer than ever SOUTH BRUNSWICK - It’s ironic, but social distancing has brought us closer to our libraries than ever before. Librarians at the South Brunswick Public Library (SBPL), sheltering-in-place and working from home like many during the COVID-19 pandemic, have elected to open their homes to the public, considering the best way, maybe the only way, to stay connected while we are closed. “It’s been great to see how the community is using our resources and learning what they have discovered while being at home,” said Jill D’Amico, SBPL Head of Information Services. “We have planned a number of virtual events to connect with one another over shared interests and goals. But, we do miss our patrons in-person contact with us at this time.” The COVID-19 librarian has had to become their own video director and its star entertainer and educator. Librarians are information specialists, but necessity has pushed them onto a whole new level of tech savvy. They are making and starring in their own home videos for virtual classes, and finding ev-
ery way possible to reach out and connect to the community. Children’s librarians led the way after we closed to the public on March 13. Just a few days later, Mr. Matt (Children’s Department Supervisor Matt Kirschner) launched his first YouTube Storytime right from his own living room with his own kids as the “studio audience.” Soon after children’s virtual programming exploded with more than a dozen different programs (stories, crafts, activities) several times a day, Monday through Friday. Visit the Events Calendar at sbpl. info for a complete schedule. “I’m proud of the work we’ve done to provide consistency to our patrons,” said ‘Tween Librarian Cindy Ambos, adding, “We offer great programs at SBPL and I’m certain that a large part of that greatness is the people behind them. “Our love for our patrons shows in everything we do, and these virtual programs are no exception. So when the opportunity came up to make ourselves available to them in this new format, we jumped at the chance.”

In addition to our daily weekday storytime, highlights include a live storytime with a new episode every Friday at 11 a.m., Stories en Espanol, ASL (American Sign Language) Stories & Signs, ‘Tween Tuesday, From the Shelf Classic Stories for all ages (read aloud), Night Owls: Pajama Storytime with Miss Jen, and Stay-atHome Science with Miss Allyee. Make no mistake, the SBPL virtual programs may be made at home, but viewers are treated to professional-looking enhancements including green screen technology, animation, live footage, video montages and musical introductions. The number of views and subscribers to the SBPL YouTube Channel continues to grow since it launched on March 17. You can also find virtual classes and workshops for ‘tweens, teens and adults. The videos can always be found on the YouTube Channel, Facebook, Twitter and Instagram, as well as a few South Brunswick community groups on Facebook. SBPL launched a Teen Virtual Art Gallery Walk on May 9, showcasing work from the student population. There are also teen-themed short story readings, chats, podcasts, games and viewing parties. Teen Services recently added Discord, and the Teen Volunteer Association has been meeting virtually. For more details, email teens@sbpl.info, look for SBPL Teens on YouTube, view the SBPL Events Calendar, or visit the sbplteens Instagram page. At first efforts for adults focused on promoting the library’s digital collections and creating tutorials to aid in their use. SBPL offers extensive digital content, including e-books, audiobooks, music, magazines, and streaming movies and television. This existed before the pandemic and has expanded to library card holders. The librarians then kicked into virtual gear and developed their own videos featuring live poetry and book readings, craft tutorials, Goodreads and live book discussions, even cooking with Dee. No one on staff is a professional filmmaker or entertainer, everyone had some learning curve to overcome. Teamwork bridged those gaps and SBPL has forged an impressive block of virtual programming for all age groups. ESL (English as a Second Language) did not miss a beat, setting up online connections with its students almost immediately. Learning a new language requires consistent practice and some students do not have someone at home fluent in English. Old favorites such as 3D Printing and Resume Workshop can also be found in the
cloud now. There are a variety of live, interactive events now, including the 3D Printing Workshop, book discussion groups, and the meeting of the South Brunswick Historical Society. Be sure to visit the Library’s Events Calendar at sbpl.info to register for an email with the video conference link in order to participate in virtual classes and workshops. Programs are being planned one a month at a time for now in case of any changes. In May, special events are even offered by groups such as Penn Medicine’s Lactose Intolerance Cooking Workshop. May is Mental Health Awareness Month, so look for relaxing options including Virtual Anti-Stress Coloring for Adults and Virtual Music Listening Club. The SBPL Mobile Branch remains in “park” for the time being, but staff have taken time to personally check in with some of their elderly regular patrons. Library Director Chris Carbone has been working with libraries and library organizations across the state developing best practices for libraries to reopen safely. “We are striving to roll out a plan for a consistent, safe, phased-in library operation throughout the state. When we are permitted to reopen to the public, it is anticipated that services will be quite different than when we left the building in March. Most likely there will be social distancing requirements, programs will remain virtual for some time, and things will gradually expand in phases over time,” he said. No date has yet been set to reopen the building, closed by the Governor’s Executive Order 107, but staff is working to prepare for that day. The borrowed items return date has been extended to July 1 or until further notice while the building is closed. The extensive virtual programming the staff has mastered out of necessity will likely shrink some, but it will not disappear. Proven to be popular and convenient for the public, online interaction is here to stay. A lot of this technology is new territory for many library users. Message any questions through the Ask A Librarian Chat Box on the library’s website. Library cards can be made. Librarians can even walk you through the steps to borrowing your first e-book. No question is too simple to ask. We are still here for you.

LETTERS Chelsea has 30 years of caring for seniors
C
helsea Senior Living operates 21 assisted living residences in New Jersey and New York. During the horrific COVID-19 pandemic, our senior population has been the most vulnerable to sickness and possible death because of preexisting medical conditions, diminished immune systems, the natural processes of aging and the fast spread of this particular virus. COVID-19 is also 10 times more lethal than the flu. We recognized early-on that the coronavirus would pose an existential threat to our residents because we conduct year-round surveillance against other infectious diseases like the flu, norovirus and pneumonia and are painfully aware of the effects of quarantine and isolation on our population. Contrary to what officials and bureaucrats at various levels of government have portrayed, an assisted living (AL) residence is not the same as a nursing home. AL communities are homes to older Americans who require assistance with daily activities such as dressing, grooming, making it to meals on time and basic mobility. Our AL residents are generally not bed-bound and do not require full time medical and nursing attention. They come to us as independent men and women and we strive to facilitate their independence while also keeping them safe and healthy. Residents in our Memory Care areas receive 24/7 support from specially trained staff. From the beginning and even today, the long term care industry has been left on its own to acquire personal protective equipment (PPE), hand sanitizer and testing. We received no support from the New Jersey or New York state health departments. Instead, we initiated our own ban on visitation, our own standards for screening employees and our own standards for surveillance and testing of residents. We care for those who are sick. If they become very sick, we get them to the hospital in a timely fashion. Most of our residents and staff who have been hospitalized have recovered. It is a great loss to us when any one of them dies. The state agencies have been woefully behind on all of it and are now playing catch-up by smacking down on operators as though we are the cause of the disease instead of victims. Chelsea has a 30-year history of caring for senior citizens, first as a nursing home provider and then starting in the late ’80s as a pioneer of assisted living. We know how to provide safe and healthy environments for senior citizens. It’s tragic that the coronavirus has become a feared fact of life and that our government, even today, seems unable to respond effectively to the threat. We urge our state

went for a walk on the Delaware & Raritan Canal in Princeton this past Sunday, May 3. There were many joggers, bikers, fisherman, walkers and kids enjoying the great weather, but not one person wearing a mask. I was surprised to see up to five people together and people stopping and talking without masks with others running past me breathing heavily. If you know the canal, it’s hard to keep a 6-foot distance while being safe with joggers and bikers going past. I know it’s only highly recommended in New Jersey
to wear a mask but I felt uncomfortable. People looked at me strangely as if I was sick. I had to cut my walk short. I’m all for opening up parks and businesses but it will take more than keeping a 6-foot distance. It will take people using common sense and wearing a face mask when they walk by or run by someone. Maybe if they knew a loved one who was gasping for air on a ventilator they might be more considerate. Nicholas Virgilio North Brunswick

Novenas PRAYER IS POWERFUL Oh, most beautiful flower of Mount Carmel, fruitful vine of splendor of Heaven, Blessed Mother of the son of God, Immaculate Virgin, assist me in my necessity. Oh, Star of the Sea, help me and show me herein you are my Mother. Oh, Holy Mary Mother of God, Queen of Heaven and Earth! I humbly beseech you from the bottom of my heart to succor me in this petition. There are none that can withstand your power. Oh, show me herein you are my Mother. Oh Mary conceived without sin pray for us who have recourse in thee (3Xs). Holy Mother, I place this cause in your hands (3Xs). Holy Spirit, you who solve all problems, light all roads so I can attain my goal. You who gave me the divine gift to forgive and forget all evil against me and that in all instances in my life you are with me, I want in this short prayer to thank you for all things as you confirm once again that I never want to be separated from you in eternal glory. Thank you for your mercy towards me and mine. + Say this prayer 3 consecutive days and publish prayer after petition is granted. Do not despair. Additional advice and petition. Pray the Rosary regularly. F.A.M.

Sewa4Community raises money, donates PPE to area organizations
S
ewa4Community–New Jersey, an Indic collective of more than 40 Dharma and Sewa organizations, has raised more than $30,000 in donations for various COVID-19 related relief efforts. So far, Sewa4Community has donated $23,000 to various food pantries and soup kitchens in New Jersey, including Elijah’s Promise; North Brunswick Township High School; food pantries in Monroe, Hightstown, Plainsboro, Parsippany, Bordentown and Morristown; and MCFOODS (Middlesex County Food Organization and Outreach Distribution Services). Around 150 volunteers from the TriState Area are working to sew masks, procure N95 masks and other personal protective equipment, and connect with medical centers in need, according to information provided by Rajesh Sharma, Central Jersey coordinator for Sewa International. So far, 6,500 masks and 85,000 gloves have been donated to various hospitals including Lantern Medical Center, Holy Name Medical
Center, Jersey Shore Medical Center, CentraState Medical Center, UMDNJ, Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital and JFK Medical Center. Along with these efforts, Sewa4Community has coordinated and executed the following efforts: • Delivering groceries to senior citizens and families in need • Delivering groceries to COVID-19 patients • Delivering handmade masks from Sewa International’s Mask Making Mission Design • Rehabilitation of international students and helping coordinate grocery delivery and accommodation • Coordination of plasma donors with needs and doctors • Handling and solving calls that come through helplines of Sewa International • Providing meals to doctors and hospitals in the Tri-State Area and EMS/EMT/ police/fire departments
For a complete list of community events, visit www.centraljersey.com. Any calendar items not appearing in the printed version of the newspaper will appear online. To submit a community announcement, send details via email to news@nsbsentinel. com, or via mail to Newspaper Media Group, North & South Brunswick Sentinel, 198 Route 9, Suite 100, Manalapan 07726. The deadline for submissions is noon on Thursday.
• Providing medical help for patients by connecting them with doctors in Sewa’s network • Providing information on various arrangements e.g., funeral, travel etc. “We need to support the food pantries and medical centers who serve our communities, enabling them to have the necessary resources to meet the rising demand,” Sharma said in the statement. Minal Sapre, service coordinator from HSS USA, mentioned that teenage volunteers are doing their part by collecting food
to provide meals to EMS/EMT workers in their townships. “This is very impressive that even teenagers have come together to join hands during this pandemic to serve the community,” she said in the statement. Due to restrictions and social distancing, the fundraiser was mainly executed through Facebook. For more information, visit www.facebook.com/donate/543555082960402/ For more details, visit Sewa4Community at www.sewa4community.org/
