T
he community of South Brunswick is reacting to the recent death of George Floyd, an African American male who died after being knelt on by a police officer in Minneapolis, as well as the larger societal issues of police brutality and racial intolerance. The South Brunswick Community March For Justice & Peace took place on June 2, traveling from Crossroads Middle School North to Georges Road to Route 522 to Kingston Lane and back to Crossroads North. Dozens of people marched peacefully along the route, according to
information provided by the South Brunswick Police Department. “The walk was well-managed and went off without incident. The rights provided by the 1st Amendment - free speech, assembly, to petition the government with grievances - were exercised without impediment, and more-so, in a safe and civil manner,” Mayor Charles Carley said. Timir Summers, who organized the event, could not be reached by press time. Superintendent of Schools Scott Feder released his own statement in reaction to recent protests to condemn racism and hate. “As I sit here trying to come to terms

with all of the actions of the past days that followed the tragic death of George Floyd, I have overwhelming feelings that include grief, sorrow, outrage and dismay, as I am sure I am echoing the feelings of our entire school community,” Feder said in a letter posted on the school district’s website. “So many times we hear from both parents and students about the racial challenges and hardships that students of color face both inside and outside of our schools. As you know, we continue to deal with equity in our schools and it remains a core component of our Strategic Plan, but is that enough? How many times do we have to (Continued on page 8)
eaders in North Brunswick have officially have condemned the death of George Floyd at the hands of a police officer in Minnesota and instances of police brutality through a resolution presented during the June 1 Township Council meeting. According to the resolution: “The township takes great pride in its diversity and maintains an atmosphere of honor, respect and opportunity for every resident and visitor regardless of age, race, creed, religion, origin, sexual orientation or gender identification. “The township makes great effort to ensure that its elected leadership, department heads and appointed boards and committees reflect the fabric of the community at large, thus ensuring the many voices that make up the one North Brunswick are represented. “The New Jersey State Association of Chiefs of Police has pursued the concept and development of a voluntary statewide law enforcement accreditation program to acknowledge law enforcement departments that have implemented and maintain rigorous policies and procedures that have been deemed sound and operationally effective … and as an accredited agency, as well as a visible department with respect to the public, sworn members of the North Brunswick Police Department receive continuous training throughout their career which includes de-escalation, diversity and interpersonal skills. The North Brunswick Neighborhood Flashlight Brigade honored all men and women who gave their lives for the country by placing an American flag on their mailboxes during Memorial Day weekend. Residents of Newton Street, Patton Street, Bell Court, Bradley Court, Bradley Street, Davis Place and Douglas Street; along with the North Brunswick Wreaths Across America Committee - Elmwood Cemetery chapter, also remembered those who gave their lives by placing a bouquet of red, white and blue carnations at the memorial monument located on Georges Road. Pictured above is Jim Kletz, a U.S. Navy veteran and member of the Wreaths Across America Committee.
The North Brunswick Flashlight Brigade collected more than nine containers of pasta and cereal, totaling more than 250 food items, plus a donation of $25, to support the North Brunswick Food Bank. The “last hurrah” on May 30 also honored neighborhood residents who have passed away.

Community can adopt South Brunswick High seniors “I’m really glad that we got the opportunity to do this for the seniors. It’s cool to see all of their bios and what they are doing next. We are hoping to get more seniors to participate. There are lots of people on our Facebook page who want to adopt a senior,” Drew said per the statement. SBHS seniors and their parents can join SBHSAdoptSenior on Facebook and post the senior’s bio, or the seniors can send a direct message to SBHSAdoptSenior on Instagram with their bio/photo/wish list. Post a picture or two and write a bio on the student; mention something about them, their accomplishments, sports, clubs, future plans, etc. Add a URL to the senior’s Amazon wish list. Invite trusted family and friends to the pages so they can join in. Adopters can join the Facebook page where they can “adopt a senior.” The first one who comments on the senior’s bio on the page becomes the adopter. You can
shop from the student’s Amazon wish list to shop and ship easily. Or, if you personally know the senior, you can drop balloons, candy, personalized note, etc. to them directly. “It’s been great seeing the community of South Brunswick come together to support the SBHS Class of 2020. It makes me happy to see all of the positive comments about the seniors. I hope everyone is enjoying this as much as we are,” Katelyn said in the statement. Those who prefer to donate money can Venmo funding to @SBHS-Senior and the money will be used to adopt an SBHS senior or multiple seniors on your behalf, and your business will be given a shout out on social media. If there is money left over at the end of the initiative, the money will be donated to Project Graduation. This initiative is not associated directly with SBHS or the school district.

wo freshman at South Brunswick High School, Drew and Katelyn O’Rourke, with the help of their mother, Suzanne O’Rourke, have started an initiative to do something for the 2020 South Brunswick High School graduating seniors. A Facebook page and Instagram page have been created, “SBHS Class of 2020 Adopt a Senior,” to support the seniors. During the first week, 100 seniors had been adopted. More than 800 community members have joined the Facebook page (SBHSAdoptSenior) and over 270 seniors joined the Instagram page (SBHSAdoptSenior). Drew and Katelyn are actively trying to get more 2020 SBHS seniors and parents to join in and get their seniors adopted, according to information provided in the daily report by the South Brunswick Police Department on May 28.

OPINION
A message from the County Prosecutors Association of New Jersey
T
he images of George Floyd’s death in Minneapolis are deeply disturbing. Mr. Floyd’s death is being investigated not only by the Hennepin County Attorney’s Office, the U.S. Attorney’s Office and the FBI in Minneapolis, but by the U.S. Department of Justice Civil Rights division, as it should be. As county prosecutors entrusted with the solemn responsibility of acting as the chief law enforcement officer in our respective counties, we recognize that so much of law enforcement’s relationship with the community is built upon trust. We trust the members of our community to follow the law and cooperate with our efforts to enforce it; our community has the right to trust that they will be treated fairly and justly by the officers who serve them. In New Jersey, the law enforcement community is fortunate to have developed a positive relationship with our residents. Our police officers and state troopers routinely conduct themselves with the utmost professionalism and respect for the mem-
bers of the communities they serve. This has been particularly apparent over the past few months as our officers have managed the added responsibility of enforcing significant restrictions on our normal activities with sensitivity to the stress that our residents are experiencing in the midst of this public health crisis. We believe that New Jersey is home to some of the finest law enforcement officers in the country. The County Prosecutors Association of New Jersey is committed to ensuring that members of our local, county and state police forces provide fair treatment and justice to all our residents. Anyone who believes they have been victimized by a member of law enforcement as a result of bias or other improper behavior is encouraged to take the matter up with that officer’s chief, or contact their county prosecutor’s office directly so their complaint can be thoroughly investigated. We are privileged to have the leadership of New Jersey Attorney General Gurbir Grewal, who just this past fall issued
a comprehensive package of policy initiatives designed to reinforce and clarify the Garden State’s commitment to excellence in policing. These statewide reforms are intended to promote the culture of professionalism, accountability and transparency that are hallmarks of New Jersey’s best law enforcement agencies. Through Grewal’s “Excellence in Policing Initiative,” the state is building a national model for strengthening accountability and trust between law enforcement officers and the communities they serve. In closing, we will keep George Floyd, his family and friends in our thoughts and prayers. In addition to being county prosecutors, we are all part of the citizenry we serve and as such, we pledge our continued commitment to ensuring justice for each and every resident of our state, to holding all offenders, police officers included, accountable for their crimes, and improving relations between law enforcement and the community.

Indian Health Camp of New Jersey provides support during COVID-19 crisis
I
ndian Health Camp of New Jersey (IHCNJ) continues to provide support during the current public health crisis via donations and education. IHCNJ organizes annual fairs at various locations four to five times per year to benefit needy people in the South Asian community, according to information provided by the organization. Due to current pandemic and social distancing recommendations, the IHCNJ may not be able to organize any health fairs this year. By keeping the public health and safety concerns in mind for the last few months, IHCNJ has been doing many activities virtually to include online interviews related to topics such as coronavirus information and education, mental health and other chronic diseases education and awareness as part of their health promotion and disease prevention objectives. In addition, the organization also donated personal protective equipment such as gloves and masks earlier in March and April when there was severe shortage and scarcity at the local hospitals in New Jersey. The donations were accepted by Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital in Somerset and Saint Peter’s University Hospital in New Brunswick. As part of community outreach and efforts for healthier living, IHCNJ also committed to provide free COVID-19 FDA-authorized antibody testing to 1,000 people in collaboration with Hematology & Oncology Care, Helping Hearts Foundation and Durham Pharmacy, according to the statement. The ultimate goal is to identify people with positive antibody to create a list of plasma donors to help people who are critically ill in the hospital to reduce the number of deaths in the state. Besides antibody testing, IHCNJ, in collaboration with Bayshore Homecare Pharmacy at one of their four HealthMart locations in New Jersey, are providing free COVID-19 antigen testing to detect coronavirus infection without any waiting, according to the statement. For COVID-19 antigen testing, interested people who have symptoms of fever, cough, sore throat or body pains can visit www.doineedacovid19test.comto register for nasal swab testing. For antibody testing, interested individuals can call at 732-913-8500 to make an appointment for a blood test. For more information about IHCNJ services during the pandemic, call Dr. Tushar Patel at 848-391-0499 or emailtpatel434@ yahoo.com.

We have to make a commitment that lives on through this most recent tragedy and make sure we do not forget. Change is needed, so let’s all be part of that change here in South Brunswick. “The North Brunswick Police Department is also committed to recruiting and developing a workforce that represents the diversity of the community it serves. “Recent demonstrations and protests across America, sparked by the video of the tragic death of Mr. George Floyd at the hands of four Minneapolis, Minnesota, police officers, challenge public safety organizations and elected leadership across the country to respond as concerns are raised by residents within the communities. “The North Brunswick mayor, Township Council and departmental leadership in no uncertain terms condemn the actions that led to the death of Mr. George Floyd … and will remain committed to the morally, ethically and lawfully fair treatment of township residents, employees and visitors … and will continue to take necessary steps, to maintain policies and procedures to ensure that residents, employees and visitors have adequate channels of communication and processes to bring all matters that call into question the fair, impartial and just treatment of anyone without fear of retribution or reprisal.” “Our intention and determination is to make sure North Brunswick is and remains a place where everyone is treated fairly and equally,” Mayor Francis “Mac” Womack said of the proclamation, which will be signed by him, council members, Deputy Police Chief Joseph Battaglia, Police Director Kenneth McCormick, Interim Business Administrator Justine Progebin and Township Attorney Ronald Gordon. During the livestreamed meeting, Superintendent of Schools Brian Zychowski said the Board of Education would pass a similar resolution. “The district not only supports the resolution [the council passed], but we are committed to continue working with our other agencies, our police department, our parks and recreation. The mayor and council’s direction cannot be overlooked
S o as a direction of diversity and acceptancem and understanding that our work is not fin-t ished, not complete. This is a timely andb timeless goal,” he said. C Zychowski said students need a foruma to express their questions, anger and disbe-p lief at the recent state of affairs. “[We will] make sure they have a sayu in their future to change the world that wel are leaving for them,” he said, calling thisP a “teachable moment” for things to get bet-i ter. t “We are not perfect and we will continue to work together in our steadfastb commitment that our students have a greatf place to learn, our staff has a great place tom work and our residents have a great placeC to live,” he said. Bishop Calvin Enlow of the New Destiny Family Worship Center in North Brunswick said a Healing of the Nation service was planned for June 5 with the mayor, police chief and clergy members expected to attend. It was streamed on Facebook Live. “[We have to] come up with a solution and strategies to eradicate racism and to eradicate police brutality so people can be judged by their character and not by the color of their skin,” he said. During the public portion of the council meeting, Womack read comments into the record that were included in the chat box of the Go To meeting. A person identified only as VM said he/she finds police unprofessional in nonwhite neighborhoods, and claimed officers harass commuters waiting at bus and/or train stations. This person also claimed he/ she saw police officers hand out tickets for suspicious driving while those with cameras and mounts on their windows get off easy. “Accreditation is meaningless and policies and statements are meaningless if a police agency does not live up to expectations,” Richard Rivera typed. “Let’s keep working on accountability.” Womack said the comments would be forwarded to the police department for review. Library offers Curbside to Go service as first step to eventual reopening
SOUTH BRUNSWICK - Preparations to begin resuming on-site public service at the South Brunswick Public Library (SBPL) have begun in earnest. No date has yet been set, but authorization for limited curbside to go service is anticipated sometime later this month. Once New Jersey officially moves to Step 2 in its Road Back reopening plan this will be permitted. To start the process for a reopening, SBPL Board of Trustees adopted a series of pandemic service policies at their May meeting to ensure safe operations for both the public and staff. Some particulars on borrowing books from library shelves post COVID-19 continue to be evaluated by administration, according to information provided by the library. “Resuming public service will be gradual and be phased in per regulations, guidelines, best practices, and availability of PPE,” SBPL Director Chris Carbone said in the statement. “We are very cognizant of the safety of our public and staff”. Carbone is also president of LibraryLinkNJ, the statewide cooperative for New Jersey libraries of all types and a member of TOPCATS, their Taskforce On COVID-19 Alignment, Trends and Strat-
egies in New Jersey Libraries. The task force has created a Best Practices blueprint for reopening libraries throughout the state. This document was among those adopted by SBPL’s Board of Trustees on May 21 to use as a guideline for our re-opening process, according to the statement. The re-opening will begin with the contactless pickup of requested items. Anyone with items borrowed from the library will be asked to start returning them to the building’s book drop at 110 Kingston Lane about July 1. At this time all book returns remain closed and no fines will be assessed. Returned items will be quarantined per public health guidelines. If at all possible, patrons will be asked to return items belonging to other libraries directly to those libraries when they begin taking returns. The interlibrary delivery service is not operating at this time, according to the statement. The curbside to go service will be for South Brunswick Library cardholders only. The library is also expanding WiFi out into the parking lot for users and discussing ways to help bridge the digital divide to provide access to those who may not have it at home, according to the statement. NORTH BRUNSWICK - The meter replacement program has resumed in North Brunswick. Customers who did not have their meter replaced prior to the COVID-19 pandemic will be receiving a new letter in the mail from InLine Services, Inc. The letter will provide a PIN to schedule an appointment at either http://ilsmeter.com/ or by calling 1-800-557-3088. Also included in the letter will be a notice outlining COVID-19 safety procedures to be followed before and during the water meter replacement appointment.
If residents do not wish to wait for the letter and would like to schedule an appointment, InLine Services is taking appointments by phone at 1-800-557-3088. All InLine Services employees with have a photo ID badge and drive clearly marked company vehicles. Do not allow any technician into your home without presenting a company photo ID and driving a clearly marked vehicle. In addition, during the June 1 Township Council meeting, Councilwoman Amanda Guadagnino said the new website is almost ready, and will include daily water usage statistics, alerts if a household goes over its water limit, and online bill pay.
COMMUNITY BULLETIN BOARD The North Brunswick Township Board of Education will have three vacancies in the Nov. 3 annual school election. A full term on the school board is for three years. Prospective school board candidates may obtain a School Board Candidate Kit at www.njsba.org. Information about the New Jersey School Ethics Act and important dates in the school election process are also included. Candidates must file a nominating petition with the Middlesex County Clerk’s Office in order to get their name on the ballot for the annual school election. The deadline to submit the nominating petition with the Middlesex County Clerk is 4 p.m. July 27. The 4-H clubs of Middlesex County will offer Social Distance Front Porch Portraits. A professional adult volunteer photographer from the 4-H will photograph families for events such as graduations, birthdays and other special occasions. Sessions will be scheduled from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. through June 30. Call 732398-5261 to make an appointment or to schedule a different time. The cost is $15 per session, within Middlesex County. Soon, the library hopes to broadcast its videos on North Brunswick’s own TV-15. Visit www.youtube.com/channel/UC1WP7DqpscPLtBsIOBSepXQ to subscribe to the channel. Residents of South Brunswick are able to preregister and pick up food twice

Novenas PRAYER IS POWERFUL Oh, most beautiful flower of Mount Carmel, fruitful vine of splendor of Heaven, Blessed Mother of the son of God, Immaculate Virgin, assist me in my necessity. Oh, Star of the Sea, help me and show me herein you are my Mother. Oh, Holy Mary Mother of God, Queen of Heaven and Earth! I humbly beseech you from the bottom of my heart to succor me in this petition. There are none that can withstand your power. Oh, show me herein you are my Mother. Oh Mary conceived without sin pray for us who have recourse in thee (3Xs). Holy Mother, I place this cause in your hands (3Xs). Holy Spirit, you who solve all problems, light all roads so I can attain my goal. You who gave me the divine gift to forgive and forget all evil against me and that in all instances in my life you are with me, I want in this short prayer to thank you for all things as you confirm once again that I never want to be separated from you in eternal glory. Thank you for your mercy towards me and mine. + Say this prayer 3 consecutive days and publish prayer after petition is granted. Do not despair. Additional advice and petition. Pray the Rosary regularly. F.A.M.
