Federal judge speaks out for first time after family attacked in North Brunswick By JENNIFER AMATO Managing Editor
U
.S. District Judge Esther Salas released her first public statement since her son was killed and husband shot at their North Brunswick home on July 19, thanking the public for its love and support, and calling for the protection of the personal information of federal judges. In a video message, Salas said on that fateful day, the family was cleaning up after celebrating their son Daniel’s 20th birthday. She said Daniel always wanted to spend his birthday with his parents, and they decided to safely host some of his friends from the Catholic University of America, Washington, D.C., for a party. Salas said she and her husband Mark had gone to church in the morning, but when they came home, and after Daniel’s last friend departed, she and Daniel were in the basement cleaning up. “The weekend was a glorious one.
It was filled with love and laughter and smiles,” Salas said. She said Daniel just wanted to talk to her, saying how much he loved their conversations. “Mom, let’s keep talking, I love talking to you, Mom,” Salas recalled Daniel saying. Then, at that exact moment, she said, the doorbell rang. “Two weeks ago my life as I knew it changed in an instant and my family will never be the same,” she said. Salas said Daniel sprinted upstairs and within seconds she was able to hear the sound of bullets and someone screaming, “No!” “This monster, who had a FedEx package in his hand, opened fire,” she said. “Daniel being Daniel protected his father and he took the shooter’s first bullet directly to the chest,” Salas said. “The monster then turned his attention to my (Continued on page 10)

Vivian Kin, a student at Crossroads Middle School South in South Brunswick, is the grand prize winner of the New Jersey Coalition for Inclusive Education 2019-20 Inclusion Works Poster Contest. Fred Buglione, president and CEO of the New Jersey Coalition for Inclusive Education, wrote that the poster “portrayed multiple aspects of inclusion by welcoming physical disabilities and all students’ abilities, and it is a diverse and representative of multiple communities. The statement, ‘We are less when we don’t include everyone’ is inspiring, powerful and a great example of why inclusion works.” Printed copies of Vivian’s poster will be distributed to schools throughout New Jersey, and will be placed on the NJCIE website and social media during the 2020-21 school year.
reschoolers walking in line in the hallway, holding hands. Kindergartners sitting on the reading rug, listening to storytime. Middle schoolers gathering at the computer for a project. Assemblies. Filed trips. Labs. In the new age of in-school instruction, South Brunswick School District Superintendent of Schools Scott Feder said all of those activities – and more – are gone. “There is nothing we are talking about moving forward that is school as we know it,” he said. Feder presented the district’s plan to reopen schools in September during a Board of Education special meeting on Aug. 6. However, he told more than 1,000 people who logged into the virtual meeting the plan will change as the state changes its guidelines.
Feder said South Brunswick divided its reopening plan into five phases. Phase 5 is full remote learning, as the district followed in the spring due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Phase 4 will have almost all of the students in the district learning remotely. There will be in-school rooms (called remote learning centers) for children who cannot stay at home. Busing will be limited and there will be no indoor lunch. There will be room capacity limits, social distancing, face covers required, temperature checks, and no contact athletics. Phase 3 is a hybrid model, blending remote learning and in-person learning. Phase 2 is a modified model where all students will be in school for full days. Phase 1 is a regular model representing typical school. On July 20, Gov. Phil Murphy said (Continued on page 7)

Middlesex County provides way to create distinct dishes from . ingredients available at food pantries
M
iddlesex County has introduced the Share Your Foodways program, a way to create delicious, culturally distinct dishes from ingredients available at the local food pantry. This program combines the efforts of MCFOODS (Middlesex County Food Organization and Outreach Distribution Services), with the Arts Institute of Middlesex County, to give back to the community in a fun and inventive way, according to information provided by the Middlesex County Office of Communication. Local chefs have contributed to this program by hosting virtual cooking demonstrations highlighting foods and ingredients that hold personal meaning. This is why the program uses the term “foodways”, which literally refers to the ways in which people use food within a cultural, historical and social context, according to the statement. “This project has three goals,” Middlesex County Freeholder Director Ronald G. Rios said in the statement. “First and foremost, to help reduce food insecurity during the pandemic; to celebrate the culinary traditions of county residents; and to destigmatize the use of food pantries. MCFOODS and the Arts Institute are proud to collaborate with local chefs and home cooks in sharing these recipes and their personal foodways.”
Each online cooking workshop will highlight a local organization directly working to meet community needs. Thanks to coordinated efforts by MCFOODS, in cooperation with local culinary expert Chef Sank, the county is able to supply local food banks with kits that include all the ingredients for each dish, according to the statement. This program was also made possible with support from the Middlesex County Board of Chosen Freeholders, the New Jersey State Council on the Arts, and the Folklife Program for New Jersey. To access a local food pantry or to support community food banks, visit http:// www.middlesexcountynj.gov/Government/Departments/mcia/Pages/Mcfoods/ Food-Assistance.aspx. Officers rescue residents sickened by carbon monoxide SOUTH BRUNSWICK – Officers were dispatched to a Robin Road home for a woman possibly having a heart attack around 10:55 p.m. Aug. 4. Officers Matthew Hagood and Tyler Harpster arrived to find the 61-year-old woman and her 9-year-old granddaughter in the residence. The officers soon realized that the woman was not suffering a heart attack but the effects of carbon monoxide poising from a generator running next to the home, according to information provided by the South Brunswick Police Department. Officers had the family evacuate the home and called the Kendall Park Fire Department to the scene. Kendall Park First Aid Squad arrived and transported both people to Princeton Medical Center where they were admitted, according to the statement. “The officer got to the home in three minutes and as soon as he got there, he heard the noise of the running generator,” Police Chief Raymond Hayducka said in the statement. “It was right outside the home. It had been placed by the back door, but it was right under an open window, so the exhaust was coming back into the home. The fumes were still pouring into the house. The officers quickly realizing
what they were dealing with was key to getting the people help.” Kendall Park Fire Chief Chris Perez said, “When my crew got there, the levels of carbon monoxide were 350 parts per million, and the generator had been running for approximately eight hours. “Three hundred fifty is a lethal amount of carbon monoxide. You will start to feel disoriented and sick right away. The problem is most people think they are just tired. If they had just gone to bed thinking nothing was wrong, they would have passed away by Wednesday morning.” Perez said it was the second incident involving a generator on Aug. 4 in the wake of Tropical Storm Isaias. In the first case, firefighters responded to a home on Blue Jay Court, this time for the carbon monoxide detector going off. “That call was at 5 p.m. When we got there, the carbon monoxide was around 70 parts per million,” said Perez. “They had been running their generator in the garage. The homeowners said, ‘Oh, we didn’t know that (it was supposed to be outside).’” Proper use of a generator is key when there is extended power outages, according to officials. “People maybe using a generator for the first time and not be familiar with the

safety measures. Make sure the generator is at least 10 to 15 feet away from your home, in a well-ventilated space and not running in an enclosed area of any kind,” Perez said in the statement. “A lot of people think they can put it right outside their
back door or a window, but it needs to be 10 to 15 feet away.” Carbon monoxide is a clear, odorless gas. Residents usually have no idea they have been inhaling it until they feel extremely ill, according to the statement.

Woman receives jail sentence for fatal crash in North Brunswick
A
Paterson woman has been sentenced to serve six years in prison for causing the death of an 80-year-old man in a crash shortly after midnight on Sept. 22, 2018. Elizabeth Gomez, 44, of Paterson, was sentenced on Aug. 5 to serve six years in a New Jersey state prison. Superior Court Judge Colleen M. Flynn ordered that the defendant must complete 85% of the term before she can be eligible for parole, according to information provided by Middlesex County Prosecutor Yolanda Ciccone on Aug. 6. In addition, Flynn ordered that Gomez is subject to a 10-year loss of license to begin upon her release from prison. The sentence was imposed after Gomez pleaded guilty on Dec. 23, 2019, in accordance with a plea agreement with Middlesex County Assistant Prosecutor Keith Abrams, to second degree vehicular homicide and driving while intoxicated which caused the death of Wen-Fu Lin, 80, of East Brunswick, according to the statement. Gomez was charged following an investigation by Officer Jason Zier of the North Brunswick Police Department and Detective David Abromaitis of the Middlesex County Prosecutor’s Office, which determined that in the early morning hours of Sept. 22, 2018, Gomez, who was intoxicated, was driving a 2007 BMW X3 on Route 1 near Fashion Plaza Drive when she ran a red light and crashed into a 2016 Chevrolet Malibu, causing the death of the driver and injuring his passenger, according to the statement.

husband and began to shoot at my husband, one shot after another. Mark was shot three times: one bullet entered his right chest, the other, his left abdomen, the last one in the right forearm.” The FBI identified Roy Den Hollander as the primary suspect in the attack. Hollander was found dead the next day, according to information provided by the U.S. Attorney’s Office on July 20, reportedly by suicide. Salas called Hollander a “madman” who she believes targeted her family because of her position as a federal judge. Salas sits on the bench in the District of New Jersey, Newark. Salas said her husband, who is a criminal defense attorney, is still in the hospital recovering from multiple surgeries. She said now, they are living every parent’s worse nightmare, preparing to bury their only child. “My family has experienced a pain that no one should ever have to endure, and I am here asking everyone to help me ensure that no one ever has to experience this kind of pain.” Salas said, as a judge, she took an oath and works tirelessly to uphold the pledge of treating everyone fairly regardless of race, gender or economic status. She said she understands judges’ decisions will be scrutinized. And she said the job requires them to make tough calls that can lead to people being angry and upset. But she said it should be hard for those who target judges to track them. “What we cannot accept is when we are forced to live in fear of our lives,” she said.
She said personal information, like her home address and the church she attends, should not be readily available on the internet. And she mentioned Hollander having a “dossier” on the family. Hollander was an attorney who specialized in anti-feminist litigation, investigations and advice on general corporate matters, according to his website. “My son’s death cannot be in vain, which is why I am begging those in power to do something, to help my brothers and sisters on the bench. Now, more than ever, we need to identify a solution to keep the lives of federal judges private,” she said. Salas said she does not have all the answers, but wants to commence a national dialogue and work collaboratively to find a solution to safeguard the privacy of federal judges. “We can’t sit back and wait for another tragedy to strike,” she said. Salas thanked those who have tried to relieve her family’s “unfathomable pain,” and specifically mentioned the first responders, doctors, nurses, staff and leadership at Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital in New Brunswick, all law enforcement officers, anyone who reached out, and everyone who said a prayer. “The outpouring of love has been overwhelming, and I can tell you it has lifted us during our darkest hours,” she said. Dan Anderl was a 2018 graduate of St. Joseph High School, Metuchen. His funeral arrangements were not known as of press time. Mark Anderl was still hospitalized, as of press time. The investigation remains ongoing. Anyone with information relevant to the investigation may call FBI-Newark at 973792-3000, press option 2.

Phased plan (Continued from page 1)
school district administrators must provide an option that permits parents who do not want to send their children to a school to select an all-remote educational plan. Feder said the plan for South Brunswick is to begin the school year in Phase 4 and re-evaluate after the first three weeks of school, which is set to begin Sept. 8, and hopefully achieve Phase 3 quickly. He said administrators will continue to monitor other school districts and other states. He said each phase will be like “boarding a plane,” step by step. For Phase 4, the remote learning centers will be building-based, facilitated by staff members, but not individual classes. Small cohorted groups will be based on room capacity. Grades and classes can be combined. Lunch will be outside. Before- and after-school programming can be added. The school day schedule would be as follows: Elementary schools – 8:30 a.m. to 2 p.m. for grades 2-5; 8:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. for Kindergarten and first grade; lunch from 11:25 a.m. to 12:30 p.m.; teachers report from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. Middle schools – 9:05 a.m. to 3:05 p.m. for students, lunch from 11:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m., teachers report from 8:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. High school – 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. for students, lunch from11:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m., teachers report from 8:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. Students will adhere to a strict schedule. Homework assignments would be due the next day, assessments would be virtual, and grading would be traditional. The district will use various platforms, adaptive technology, instructional enhancement tools and content-specific digital tools for the virtual program. Feder said most students are equipped with technology already, but anyone needing a device or internet connectivity will be assisted. Regarding students and staff members who will be in a building, Feder said there will be face coverings required for all individuals, with face shields available for

teachers, sanitizer, signs, barriers, gowns, spray and wipes, and gloves. Administrators purchased electrostatic sprayers and HVAC ionic scrubbers. There will be day and night cleanings, and room sign-offs when disinfected. Anyone arriving at school must have a mask on prior to entering the building. Feder said a child should be masked before getting out of their car or before getting onto a bus; a child who walks to school is expected to put on a mask before walking onto school property. The superintendent said there will be outdoor mask breaks throughout the school day for children to take off their mask safely, but as per the governor’s orders, masks cannot be removed anywhere indoors. He said parents are responsible for keeping their child home if the child has a fever over 100 degrees, traveled to a state that is on the quarantine list, or has any symptoms or had exposure to the virus. He asked parents not to fudge the pre-screening documents. “If the answer is ‘yes’ (to a question about symptoms), they just can’t come (to school). The only way we are going to contain this is if parents keep sick kids home,” Feder said. “Kids are asymptomatic a lot of the time … so it’s about vigilance, it’s about not having house parties, it’s about not letting your kids go someplace where something is likely to occur.” Feder referred to the start of outdoor sports on Aug. 3. He said of the 220 student-athletes who reported, 10 were sent home. He said six students had a fever, three had visited other states and one did not feel well. “Ten kids from their home to the school who someone didn’t take notice,” he said. As the ratio of sick children was about 5%, he said taking that from a pool of hundreds of students in a building, there could be dozens of children who would have to be put in an isolation area waiting for their parents to come and get them. He also said hundreds of students can be infected very quickly. Any child who is sick will have to be in isolation for 10 days. On the 10th day, the child has to be fever-free for 24 hours, according to guidelines from the Centers for

Disease Control and Prevention. If a child has any symptoms, he or she also has to be isolated for 10 days. Feder said those guidelines apply to a fever for any reason, not just COVID. He said children cannot share supplies, there will have to be a determination of how students will travel through hallways, and the Department of Education requires every child to wash their hands at certain times of the day. “The idea of having kids in school with these kinds of rules is really driving us a little bonkers,” said Feder, who has been advocating for state officials to open all indoor facilities and test the response prior to making children an “experiment” in schools. For students who do not waive transportation, buses will be at 32 students maximum capacity. Students will sit, masked, near the windows, but if needed the aisle seat in a row with three seats could be used. Feder said the entire planning process represents a significant financial undertaking, stating, “it’s a problem.” He said the district is already losing $2 million this year and expects to lose $2.2 million next year according to the state aid regulations set forth by school funding legislation. He said the expenses for personal protective equipment are already about $300,000. He said the district is experiencing revenue loss from the cancellation of

summer camp, the loss of facilities rentals and smaller before- and after-school programs. He did note the district received a $500,000 grant from Digital Divide, and some money from the federal CARES Act. All things considered, Jennifer Diszler, assistant superintendent for Curriculum, Instruction and Administration, said students and staff members will be trained in social-emotional learning, including self-management, self-awareness, social awareness, relationship skills and responsible decision making as they return to school. The bottom line, Feder said, is that it is very difficult to ensure health and safety as well as high quality education from inside the school buildings. He said he can make sure children are safe, and provide a decent education, but to merge both at this time is only accomplished with all students at home. Additional forums will be held on Aug. 10 for the parents of elementary school students, and on Aug. 11 for the parents of middle and high school students. Information will be available at sbschools.org Feder also said he would like to organize outdoor meet-and-greets for the students to meet their teachers before school begins. Parents can contact Feder at scott.feder@sbschools.org or Diszler at jennifer. diszler@sbschools.org
