Governor signs bill, eliminates title of ‘freeholder’ from county government

Off-duty officer who saved man’s life is North Brunswick native By KATHY CHANG Staff Writer

t didn’t matter that Metuchen Police Officers Wayne Karalevich and Octavio Tapia were off duty when they sprung into action to help a person in distress at the Metuchen Sportsplex. The two officers were playing soccer on Aug. 21 when a member of the other team came under distress. “Apparently it became so serious the person did not have a pulse and wasn’t breathing,” Mayor Jonathan Busch said, adding the quick actions of Karalevich, a graduate of North Brunswick Township

High School, and Tapia saved the man’s life. The mayor recognized the officers at the Metuchen Borough Council meeting on Aug. 25. Police Chief David Irizarry said the incident on Aug. 21 was “yet another example of how police officers are never really ‘off-duty.’ “ “One moment they were playing in a soccer game and the next they were saving a life,” he said. “I am extremely proud of both officers for jumping into action and allowing their training to immediately take over under stressful conditions.”

ay goodbye to the centuries-old title of freeholder in New Jersey county government. Democratic Gov. Phil Murphy has signed Senate bill 855 into law and the legislation requires the title of “chosen freeholder” to be changed to “county commissioner” and all “boards of chosen freeholders” to be known as “boards of county commissioners,” according to a press release from Murphy’s office. The law also requires county governments to update their letterheads, stationary and other writings, as well as their websites, to bear the title of county commissioners in place of freeholders or chosen freeholders within one year of the bill’s effective date, Jan. 1, 2021. The law does not require counties to update or replace signs or other writings to reflect this title change within the specified timeframe if doing so would require the expenditure of county funds, according to the press release. In those cases, the title would be changed whenever the writing is next updated or replaced in the ordinary course of business. “We have an obligation to ensure that governance in New Jersey is inclusive and representative of the tremendous diversity of our great state,” Murphy said. “Amid a national reckoning to re-examine vestiges rooted in structural racism, this action will eliminate the use of the term ‘freeholder’ in county government – a title that is an outgrowth of a time when people of color and women were excluded from public office.” In a statement issued on Aug. 24, the Middlesex County Board of Chosen Freeholders, all five of whom are Democrats, said, “We are pleased to see the Governor and the Legislature take action to retire the title of ‘chosen freeholder.’ “This term dates back to an era in which people of color, women and those without financial means were not treated as equals – and is not representative of the ideals which we all aspire to today. “We are pleased to see this title be replaced and look forward to entering 2021 as the Middlesex County Board of County Commissioners,” the freeholders said. Asked to comment on the new law,

Thomas Arnone, the director of the Monmouth County Board of Chosen Freeholders, all five of whom are Republicans, said, “As I have previously stated, I respect the opinions of my freeholder colleagues throughout the state who support the title change, but I have a somewhat different opinion on the matter. “I have advocated for the state to look at all offensive names across the board and not just the title of freeholder. For example, they should start with reviewing the name of Rutgers University, which is the largest institution of higher education in New Jersey. “With that being said, the changing of the title of freeholder does not bother me nearly as much as the legislative effort that was put in during a time of financial distress, (with ongoing) health and safety concerns, and state operations being in disarray. “In closing, I can only speak on behalf of the Monmouth County Board of Chosen Freeholders and whatever name we are called, we will continue to be leaders in the state in what we call good government,” Arnone said. “The decision to change the word freeholder to county commissioner is long awaited,” said Sen. Vin Gopal (D-Monmouth). “In Monmouth County, where we have towns like Freehold Borough, Freehold Township and Upper Freehold, not only will changing this title avoid confusion and increase voter participation, it will tell women and our communities of color that New Jersey does not associate itself in any way with these archaic values of the past. This is a proud day in our history.” “The term freeholder is outdated and it’s offensive to women and minorities,” Assembly Speaker Craig Coughlin (DMiddlesex) said. “The term dates back to a time before the Revolutionary War when only white male owners of debt-free land were allowed to hold public office. New Jersey is the only state in the country that still uses the term freeholder. It is long past time that we right this wrong and change the title to commissioner.” State Sen. Joe Pennacchio (R-Essex,

Children’s book based on twin brothers’ adventures is published posthumously By JENNIFER AMATO Managing Editor

A

loving woman who is missing her younger sister decided to publish her sister’s children’s book posthumously to continue her legacy. Patricia David, of the Monmouth Junction section of South Brunswick, published a new children’s book, “The Adventures of Kiko and Pez” on Aug. 4 by Mascot Books, after her sister Jane Jimenez passed away last year. Kiko and Pez are twin brothers who love to get into mischief and seem to attract trouble wherever they go. A blend of fiction and memoir, the characters of Kiko and Pez were inspired by the Jimenezes’ sons. All of the proceeds go to Jimenez’s sons and their college funds, according to Anna-Marie Mapes of Mascot Books. According to information provided by David, Jimenez was born on Oct. 22, 1965, in the Bronx, N.Y., the youngest daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Thomas LeBlanc. The family is from the Commonwealth of Dominica in the West Indies. She attended Cardinal Spellman High School in the Bronx and earned a degree in business administration from Iona College, New Rochelle, N.Y. Jane married Ray Jimenez on Aug. 27, 1993, in New York. She was the proud mother of twin boys Josh and Randy. She moved to Florida and Georgia where she raised her family. “She was well known for her hospitality, her infectious smile and her tasteful cooking – pastelitos and others. One of her greatest joys was to be with her sons, her husband and her dog Dennis. “Family and faith in the Lord were important aspects of her life. On any given day you could hear her singing one of her favorite songs, ‘Three Little Birds’ by Bob Marley – ‘Don’t worry ‘bout a thing ‘cause every little thing gonna be all right.’ This has become the theme and logo for the family,” David said. Jimenez fell sick in 2017 and survived for 10 months. She passed away on May 20, 2018. “From the first day to her last, she never wanted to burden anyone with her illness and kept it from most of the family. “When she would check in on her family and friends she always asked how they were doing and what could she do for them. “During her last moments with her father – who recently passed away in July

refuse to believe she is gone and are doing everything they can to keep her memory and spirit alive,” David said. Known as Cookie, Janie and Cook Cooks, Jimenez was always dabbling in one thing or another; as a stay-at-home mother she had a lot of energy coupled with a great imagination, David said. “She dreamed about writing books for a long time and she would always use her surroundings as the ingredients to tell a great story. After she passed, we realized she had been writing as far back as 2015. “She wrote an alphabet book based on animals with names, and Kiko and Pez which had gone through a series of names before we landed on this one. “She wrote to publishers hoping to get a thumbs up. In some cases she was either denied or never got a response, but she kept sending them out. She was relentless,” David said. David said her sister, during her darker moments alone, also found solace in painting and writing positive messages that she hung all over her home. Her signature was three little birds. Jimenez had always dreamed about having a large family reunion, but never got it off the ground. Three months after her death, David and her husband have been hosting family members for a week at the end of the summer.

“The family came from all corners of the world to reconnect. We make the themes around Cookie and others we have lost along the way,” David said. “We knew she really wanted to get this book published so I asked Ray, her husband, for the documents and said I was going to finish what Cookie started. I had no idea about how to get her book published, but I did some research and settled on Mascot publishing. “We had everything we needed: editors, illustrators, designers and marketers. We signed with them about a year ago. I got Ray and the twin boys involved to help the illustrator with the designs and the layout. “We were all happy the editor did not suggest any additions except for basic grammar and spelling. Cookie’s book was finished. It took about 12 months from the time we started and got it done just in time for the second anniversary of her death,” David said. When David first read the plot she was surprised it was loosely based on several family members. Her twin boys are best friends and the book highlights their unconditional friendship no matter what; in real life she raised them to have a built in friendship that was unbreakable and that is seen in the book and is evidenced even today as they are in college, she said. There is a scene in the book about reptiles which is patterned after Cookie’s niece Sammy, who is a herpetologist in a zoo where she takes care of reptiles. Another angle in the book is to celebrate single mothers and is patterned after all of the strong women in the family who take care of anything that comes their way, David said. A copy of the book is buried with Jimenez and with her parents in the Commonwealth of Dominica. “This was truly a labor of love and teaches our entire family that when you say you are going to do something you do it. And you help others take their goals to the finish line. “Her sons are thrilled knowing they are not only characters in their mom’s book, but that her wish to be a writer and her legacy will live on forever,” David said. “The Adventures of Kiko and Pez” is written by Jane Jimenez and illustrated by Walter Policelli. In-person career classes, remote academic classes on three MCVTS campuses

A

s more and more New Jersey public school districts opt to return to remote learning for the fall term, the Middlesex County Vocational and Technical Schools have decided to institute a different kind of hybrid plan – remote learning for academic courses and in-person classes for career and technical education. When school reopens Sept. 3, students on the East Brunswick, Perth Amboy and Piscataway campuses will receive in-person instruction for their career-major and physical education classes and will be online for their academic classes, such as English, history and math, according to information provided by the school district. Students at the Middlesex County Academy for Science, Mathematics and Engineering Technologies in Edison and the Middlesex County Academy for Allied Health and Biomedical Sciences in

Woodbridge will either receive in-person or virtual instruction, depending on their parents’ preference. The district had planned to have all students attend classes in person at 50% capacity, divided by alphabetical order, alternating between two and three days of in-person instruction per week, with the remaining days online, according to the statement. Superintendent of Schools Dianne D. Veilleux explained that the thinking began to change in mid-August as Gov. Phil Murphy offered parents the option of choosing all-remote learning. Surveys undertaken by MCVTS principals found that 30-60% of parents would choose remote learning. “We just don’t have enough teachers to cover all the bases,” Veilleux said in the statement. “When the principals tried to

cover all the classes, it became more and more difficult. We can give the students, in effect, their full in-person career-major instruction. Our kids are experiential learners – that’s where they excel.” MCVTS offers 34 career majors, including such subjects as advanced manufacturing, engineering, building services, health careers, graphic arts, automotive technology, cosmetology, baking and culinary arts, dance, music and theater. The students will be divided by class with each group alternating between two and three days of shop classes a week. The school day will be from 8:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m., with staggered dismissals to promote social distancing, according to the statement. Teachers in academic subjects will teach remotely from their classrooms unless a medical condition necessitates teach-

ing from their homes. Teachers in the two academies will teach both remote and in-person classes, but not at the same time. All of the safety protocols mandated by the state will be observed, with both students and staff required to wear face coverings while in the school buildings, according to the statement. Outdoor settings will be used as much as possible for physical education classes and lunches. Parents are required to conduct health screenings daily and report the status of their children online. Students entering a school building will undergo a temperature check. Students will be encouraged to wash hands frequently and all equipment will be sanitized between uses.

dates her tenure at PYHA and even her tenure as mother to PYHA Lifetime Achievement (Mite-to-Midget) award winner Ryan Siegel. “Growing up, all of my male cousins on both sides of my family played ice hockey. We used to go and watch games at Abe Stark Arena in Coney Island. They played for the Brooklyn Stars and the Long Island Gulls,” Thompson-Siegel said. “When my son was about three, ProSkate was getting ready to open its doors for the first time and they had a tent up in the parking lot. We pulled up to the tent, opened the car door and asked George Haviland of NJ Titans fame if Ryan was old enough to start to skate. The rest is history.” The Siegels – Maureen, her son Ryan and husband Steven – made their way to PYHA when Ryan was turning seven. After making the Mites travel team at ProSkate, the rink changed ownership and the new owners didn’t believe that children as young as Ryan Siegel should be participating in travel hockey. “I tried to convince them otherwise,” Thompson-Siegel said, “as there were about ten kids that were told they made the team that were now being told there would not be a team.” Thompson-Siegel did what any good hockey mom or dad would do and phoned a friend. “I spoke with Coach Dan Fortunato, whose son played hockey with John Inman. The two dads also played men’s league together. Dan let Mark Inman know we were looking for a team for Ryan and Coach Mark added Ryan onto his Tigers Mite C team. We have been Tigers ever since,” she said. Ever the volunteer and organizer, Thompson-Siegel served as manager for her son’s teams from his second year of Mites all the way through his last year of Midgets, making memories all along the way. Special moments include watching Ryan and his teammates receive gold medals in Lake Placid and cheering his team on during their playoff runs, of which there were several. Not all special moments are tied to success on the ice, however. There was also the year Ryan Siegel’s Pee Wee B team collected items at the end-of-season banquet to send to troops serving in Kuwait where one of their teammate’s fathers was serving. Thompson-Siegel also recalls Coach Ian McNally’s team building exercise where he created a scavenger hunt on

the Princeton campus, a special coach creating a special moment among friends in the magical Ivy League setting. It was also special watching her son grow as a USA Hockey official where he now works full time in the USAH officiating development program while pursuing his masters degree. Tops on the list of the many memories? “Watching Ryan’s team of friends grow into fantastic young adults and making lifelong friends with the team families,” she said. There isn’t a facet of PYHA that Thompson-Siegel hasn’t had a hand in shaping. If there was a role to be filled, she was always willing to fill it and then to train the person who was willing to step in and take over so she could move onto the next hole that needed plugging. In addition to being a 10-time team manager, Thompson-Siegel has served as uniform coordinator, Lake Placid tournament coordinator, banquet co-chair, alternate registrar, board member, NJYHL alternate delegate, head manager, board president and most recently, administrative director and master scheduler. “Through her many years of hard work and volunteering, Maureen, as the ultimate ‘Tiger Mom,’ made my time at PYHA as parent, coach, board member and ultimately president from 2015 to 2019 a pleasure,”

past PYHA President Kevin Welsh said. “Her loyalty to the organization is unsurpassed, and her willingness to do whatever was necessary to ensure that the philosophy of PYHA was always ultimately served is legendary. That our organization is so well respected within the NJYHL and the Atlantic District is testament to her guiding hand, and willingness on occasion to take a hard stand, and fight when she believed the best interests of the kids were not being served. The groundwork that she laid in her many roles at PYHA will ensure that our organization will continue to prosper through the coming years.” Thompson-Siegel works a full-time job as senior grant and contract administrator at Princeton University. She also currently holds the following positions: secretary for the Atlantic Amateur Hockey Association (AAHA), administrative vice president for NJYHL responsible for scheduling and playoffs, secretary for the NJYHL, USA Hockey ADM coordinator for the Atlantic Affiliate, USA Hockey Grow the Game coordinator for the Atlantic Affiliate, member of the Girls Hockey Growth Committee, and member of the AAHA Diversity and Inclusion Committee. What will Maureen miss most about PYHA? The answer came quickly. “PYHA is a special organization. It has always struck the best balance of competition with family values. The focus was always on making the best choices and

IMPROVEYOUR LAWN THIS FALL! We Can Help By Aerating & Overseeding!

Compacted soil and heavy thatch are the two biggest obstacles to a beautiful lawn. They tend to suffocate grass plants by preventing air, water, and nutrients from reaching the root zone. This means your lawn looks less than satisfactory in spite of adequate fertilization, water, and tender loving care! Aeration opens up the thatch and helps relieve compaction. It should be a regular part of your annual lawn maintenance program. Aeration is accomplished by the use of a machine equipped with cylinder-like spoons designed to penetrate and shatter the soil. Half inch diameter plugs of thatch and soil are actually pulled from the ground during this process. The plunging action of the spoons into the ground opens up the soil-allowing the grass plants to breathe and promoting deeper, healthier roots.

Major benefits of aeration...

• Increases air, water, and nutrient movement to the root zone • Intensifies decomposition of thatch • Helps relieve soil compaction • Stimulates new growth • Improves drainage • Provides a better environment for overseeding • Increases the effectiveness of applied fertifizers & control products • Incorporates organic matter into the soil • Increases tolerance to heat and cold

Morris, Passaic) said, “As a former freeholder, I believe it is important that the public knows the substance of what a freeholder does rather than what the term freeholder is. “Today’s action was nine years in the making from when I initially proposed the abolishment of the antiquated term. The title ‘county commissioner’ will lend itself to transparency. This revamp will ensure more Garden State residents better understanding the function of this important position in county government,” Pennacchio said. The press release issued by the governor’s office quoted Jonathan Holloway, the new president of Rutgers University, saying, “This is not about the people who serve as freeholders, but rather the title. The title freeholder has a legacy that grows out of denying people access and the right to have a voice. Our present day should simply not look like that.”

arking a major milestone in what has become a standard of care in prostate cancer surgery, Rutgers Cancer Institute of New Jersey Urologic Oncology Chief Isaac Yi Kim, MD, PhD, has completed his 2,000th robotic prostatectomy at Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital in New Brunswick, an RWJBarnabas Health facility, and one of the few hospitals in the state designated to teach surgeons about this technique. Dr. Kim, who is also the director of the Prostate Cancer Program at Rutgers Cancer Institute and medical director of Robotic Surgery at Monmouth Medical Center, an RWJBarnabas health facility, performed the operation recently on a Toms River man diagnosed with prostate cancer. Robotic prostatectomy allows surgeons to easily operate a set of robotic arms that hold tiny surgical instruments while a computer translates the movements of the surgeon’s fingers in removing the patient’s cancer. This minimally invasive approach avoids leaving a large incision like the traditional open method of prostate surgery. Robotic assisted surgery can help improve patient outcomes. The procedure allows for additional precision with a 3D view of the tissue and delicate nerves that envelop the prostate. Reduced blood loss, shorter hospital stays and a faster time to achieve full continence are also hallmarks of the procedure. Like many men his age, 63-year old patient Anthony Giordano had no symptoms. His cancer was detected during a regular check up with his physician. An elevated prostate-specific antigen (PSA) number led to further testing and a visit to a local urologist revealing a cancer

diagnosis in May 2020. A referral to Kim to discuss treatment options was the next step. “I was initially shocked that I had such an advanced stage of cancer as a 63-yearold in good health,” Giordano said. An active individual, he is a busy professional and enjoys spending his free time sailing, skiing and bike riding. “Dr. Kim explained that I’m too young to opt for radiation treatment, and because I don’t have any underlying health issues, he gave me the confidence that robotic surgery was the right choice for me,” he noted, especially considering the benefits of robotic surgery including quicker recovery and less chance of serious side effects. “As New Jersey’s only National Cancer Institute-designated Comprehensive Cancer Center, Rutgers Cancer Institute offers the latest in cutting-edge surgical techniques and has been instrumental in robotic surgery advances for prostate cancer. In collaboration with Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital, Rutgers Cancer Institute is proud to be a leader in training surgeons in this advanced technique and conducting research to enhance its use and transform patient outcomes,” said Kim, who is also a professor of surgery at Rutgers Robert Wood Johnson Medical School. “I would advise other men going through a similar situation to avoid hesitating, do your research, and make sure you feel confident with your surgeon. From the friendly faces I encountered my first time walking through the door at Rutgers Cancer Institute to meeting Dr. Kim’s team, I felt reassured that I made the right choice.”

AllCure Spine & Sports Medicine offers SPUH establishes program to help patients recover from COVID longterm multidisciplinary practice in Monroe

S

aint Peter’s University Hospital has announced the creation of a specialized COVID-19 Recovery Program to provide comprehensive, multi-specialty treatment for individuals who were previously diagnosed (tested positive) with COVID-19. The program offers care to individuals who were previously treated for COVID-19 at Saint Peter’s, as well as those treated at other medical facilities, and those who tested positive and recovered at home. The COVID-19 Recovery Program will serve as a community-based support system and resource by providing expert medical care to COVID-19 patients as they deal with persistent symptoms such as shortness of breath, lack of energy, chest pain, cough, leg swelling, stomach pain and weight loss, among others, according to information provided by the hospital. The goal is to leverage Saint Peter’s clinical expertise, working closely with community physicians and specialists, to manage the unique needs of postCOVID-19 patients in their journey to recovery. According to Dr. Amar Bukhari, chief of Pulmonary, Critical Care and Sleep Medicine at Saint Peter’s, “We remain vigilant in evaluating the long-term impact of COVID-19, a syndrome that still has many unknowns. While some patients feel better sooner, there are others that are experiencing lasting symptoms. To complicate matters, these symptoms can vary in intensity and duration from patient to patient; what we’ve noticed is that no two cases present the same.” Saint Peter’s COVID-19 Recovery Program is modeled on a continuum of care that begins with primary care and navigates patients to the specific specialist(s) that may be needed, depending on their symptoms. It is well-documented that many COVID-19 patients continue to experience lung, heart and behavioral health issues, among others, during recovery, according to the statement. Program specialists participating in Saint Peter’s COVID-19 Recovery Program

will include pulmonologists, cardiologists, neurologists and others depending on the individual health issues. Saint Peter’s physicians will work collaboratively with primary care physicians and specialists in the community to develop individualized treatment plans so that patients can achieve optimal health, with the goal of long-term recovery. Initial patient contact will be by telemedicine after which any appropriate labs or tests will be ordered. Subsequent treatment and follow-up will be in-person or virtual and determined on a case-bycase basis. In addition, documentation will be timely and sent to the patient’s existing healthcare provider. “We want to help patients feel better by effectively managing any lasting effects of the disease,” Dr. Nilam Srivastava, chief of Division of Internal Medicine at Saint Peter’s, said in the statement. “We are collecting data to gain a better understanding of the disease overall and its long-term effects. This data will support our outreach efforts to not only better serve at-risk individuals but to educate them on warning signs.” Patients participating in the COVID-19 Recovery Program can donate plasma, further promoting COVID-19 medical research, through the Mayo Clinic’s Convalescent Plasma Therapy Research program, which is being conducted at 2,637 sites nationwide, according to the statement. Convalescent blood plasma donations are currently being accepted through the New York Blood Center and American Red Cross. “My advice for anyone who previously tested positive for COVID-19 is to schedule a telemedicine appointment to learn more about the program and its benefits. Don’t delay in seeking immediate help for any long-lasting effects. Patients can be assured that all information will be kept confidential and that we’re here to help them get better and stay better,” Bukhari said in the statement. For more information about Saint Peter’s COVID-19 Recovery Program, call the COVID Recovery line at 732-7458552.

HOW DO YOU KNOW IF YOU HAVE NERVE DAMAGE?

Peripheral neuropathy is the consequence of damage to your peripheral nerves. There are over 100 different kinds of peripheral nerve disorders or neuropathies - some are the result of a disease like diabetes, while others can be triggered by a viral infection. Still others are the result of an injury or compression on the nerves. No matter where the problems begin, it is imperative nerve disorders are resolved as soon as possible to prevent permanent damage. Many people suffer with pain for years, not realizing that their symptoms may be due to Peripheral Neuropathy. Symptoms start gradually, then get worse including numbness, burning, or tingling sensations and sharp, electrical-like pain. Treatment options have been limited to a small assortment of pain medications, which can lead to further issues. Ignoring the problem or masking the symptoms has never been a viable solution. If you suffer from any of the aforementioned symptoms, we can help.

T

he current crisis with the U.S. Postal Service is a clear attempt by the Trump Administration to steal the upcoming election. However, there are other dire economic effects that are impacting Americans on a daily basis. It took two weeks for a much-needed client check to arrive in my mailbox from New Hampshire. How many Americans who need such payments to cover basic costs are similarly affected? Serious delays in delivering medications have been reported, putting thousands at risk. What about supplies and manufacturing parts to be delivered to essential services such as hospitals and to businesses large and small? Over 4,000 baby chicks died in delayed shipment to Maine farmers. Small busi-

nesses that rely on the USPS for delivery and cannot afford to use more expensive services such as FedEx and UPS are suffering, as are online marketplaces such as eBay and etsy. These are just a few of the economic and social crises created by this corrupt manipulation of the USPS for political purposes. The impact will only increase as this crisis continues. And continue it will, as Republicans care only about retaining power. Apparently, Trump, with his self-proclaimed business acumen, failed to consider this side effect of his power grab, nor did he care.

Schools should hold 9/11 moment of silence

A

s a country, we will be commemorating the 19th anniversary of the terrorists attacks of Sept. 11, 2001. It is my hope and the hope of many New Jersyians that we join our neighbor, the State of New York, where all public schools are now required to hold a moment of silence to mark the anniversary of the Sept. 11 attacks under a law (2019) that Gov. Andrew Cuomo signed last year, stating “by establishing this annual day of remembrance and a brief moment of silence in public schools, we will help ensure we never forget — not just the pain of that moment but the courage, sacrifice and outpouring of love that defined our response.” I am respectfully reaching out to the North Brunswick Township School District to set an example for all schools in

New Jersey to follow by taking the lead of New York by requiring all their schools to hold a moment of silence. I know the New Jersey government leaders have discussed this topic recently but now is the time to take action, especially during these trying times, not only in New Jersey but throughout our country. Our government leaders are not in session and I respectfully ask that is not too late to enact a similar law like New York to be approved by both houses of the state legislature and to be signed by Gov. Phil Murphy to become law. We shall always remember! We shall never forget! May all Rest In Peace!

LABOR DAY

Dorothy Margaret Klesitz (Sipos) was born on August 22, 1930 in New Brunswick, NJ. She grew up in North Brunswick with her sister, Lillian (1928-2019), and parents, Grace and Charles. She graduated from New Brunswick High School in 1948. Dorothy married Edward Ernest Klesitz on June 25, 1950 with whom she was happily married for 45 years, until his death in 1996. They had four children; Jill Rice (husband, Andrew), Edward Klesitz (wife, Laurie), who reside in NJ, Donna Zaabadick (husband, John) of CO, and Pamela Luersen (husband, Robert) of FL. Dorothy had 10 beloved grandchildren, Dawn, Amy, Johnny, Jenny, James, Edward, Danielle, Samantha, Juliet, and Emily, and 11 beloved great grandchildren, John, Lilly, Casey, Jersey, Eli, Brooke, Edward, Jacob, Madison, Van, and Reese.

y

s

Called Dot by friends and Mom or Gram by family, Dorothy lived in Milltown all of her adult life until recently when she was in the care of her youngest daughter, Jill. Dot was a very loving, kind, and generous person who never knew a stranger. All were welcome to her home with open arms. Her main joy in life was having her family to her home for any occasion to share great meals and great times together. Especially remembered are the fun Easter egg hunts she planned each year for children, grandchildren, and great-grands, delicious chicken paprikash dinners she cooked from scratch, and trips to the Ice Cream Depot.

s

e

Dot’s faith was a very important part of her life. She was an active member and elder of St. Paul’s United Church of Christ in Milltown. She was Milltown’s first female crossing guard, past President of the Milltown Fire Department Ladies Auxiliary, and a lifetime member of the NJ State Auxiliary. Some of her many interests included being an excellent league bowler, playing cards with the neighbors and grandchildren, gathering monthly with her “Club Ladies”, crafting, gardening, bird watching, playing bingo, watching any and all sports, traveling out to Colorado and Oregon, and summer vacations at the Jersey Shore. Also notable was Dot’s impressive finesse in managing the household, being a handywoman around the house, and always requesting a corner slice of cake. “Happiness is!”

O Glorious St. Therese, whom Almighty God has raised up to aid and inspire the human family, I implore your Miraculous Intercession. You are so powerful in obtaining every need of body and spirit from the Heart of God. Holy Mother Church proclaims you “Prodigy of Miracles... the Greatest Saint of Modern Times. Now I fervently beseech you to answer my petition (mention here) and to carry out your promises of spending Heaven doing good upon earth... Of letting fall from Heaven a Shower of Roses. Little Flower, give me your childlike faith, to see the Face of God in the people and experiences of my life, and to love God with full confidence. St. Therese, my Carmelite Sister, I will fulfill your plea “to be made known everywhere and I will continue to lead others to Jesus through you. Amen.

PRAYER IS POWERFUL

Prayer to St. Jude

St. Therese Novena

Oh, most beautiful flower of Mount Carmel, fruitful vine of splendor of Heaven, Blessed Mother of the son of God, Immaculate Virgin, assist me in my necessity. Oh, Star of the Sea, help me and show me herein you are my Mother. Oh, Holy Mary Mother of God, Queen of Heaven and Earth! I humbly beseech you from the bottom of my heart to succor me in this petition. There are none that can withstand your power. Oh, show me herein you are my Mother. Oh Mary conceived without sin pray for us who have recourse in thee (3Xs). Holy Mother, I place this cause in your hands (3Xs). Holy Spirit, you who solve all problems, light all roads so I can attain my goal. You who gave me the divine gift to forgive and forget all evil against me and that in all instances in my life you are with me, I want in this short prayer to thank you for all things as you confirm once again that I never want to be separated from you in eternal glory. Thank you for your mercy towards me and mine. + Say this prayer 3 consecutive days and publish prayer after petition is granted. Do not despair. Additional advice and petition. Pray the Rosary regularly.

Most holy Apostle St. Jude, faithful servant and friend of Jesus the name of the traitor who delivered the beloved Master into the hands of His enemies, has caused you to be forgotten by many but the Church honors and prays to you universally as the patron of hopeless cases, of things despaired of. Pray for me who am so miserable; make use I implore you of that particular privilege accorded to you to bring visible and speedy help, where help is almost despaired of. Come to my assistance in this great need that I may receive the consolations and help of Heaven in all my necessities, tribulations and sufferings particularly (here make your request) and that I may bless God with you and all the elect forever. I PROMISE you, blessed St. Jude to be ever mindful of this great favor and I will never cease to honor you as my special and powerful patron and to do all in my power to encourage devotion to you. Amen. May the most just, most high and most adorable Will of God be in all things done, praised and magnified, forever and ever. Amen.

O little Therese of the Child Jesus, please pick for me a rose from the heavenly gardens and send it to me as a message of love. O little Flower of Jesus, ask God today to grant the favors I now place with confidence in your hands.. (mention specific requests) St. Therese, help me to always believe as you did, in God’s great love for me, so that I might imitate your “Little Way each day. Amen.
