South Brunswick will challenge decision to cut funds
S
outh Brunswick schools will not see any relief from Gov. Phil Murphy’s budget. “We learned that Gov. Murphy’s proposed budget for the coming school year cuts all funds to school-based youth programs statewide,” Superintendent of Schools Scott Feder said in a message to the community on Sept. 1. “For South Brunswick schools, this decision means the end to the BRIDGE Center and the seven healthcare professionals who serve our students. To replace this program we will need to find $500,000 plus,” Feder said.
The BRIDGE Center (Building Respect, Independence, Diversity, Growth, Education) provides counseling, substance abuse education and prevention, employment counseling, health awareness, and linkage to other supports at no cost to the student, at Crossroads Middle School North and South, and at South Brunswick High School. It is funded by the New Jersey Department of Children and Families, with services provided by Rutgers University Behavioral Health in collaboration with the school district. “In the wake of the pandemic, there has
never been a more important time to support the mental health and well-being of our students. Trenton’s lack of understanding and commitment to our schools has caused a roller coaster ride throughout the summer and learning of such a huge loss, a week before schools open, is tragic and shameful. We plan to join leaders statewide to challenge this decision,” Feder said. Feder asked residents to sign a petition at tinyurl.com/SBSDSOS to help the district challenge Murphy’s decision. There is a list of political leaders and local legislators who residents can contact, as well as a sample letter and phone talking points.
enneth McCormick, the director of the North Brunswick Police Department (NBPD), passed away on Sept. 2. “To all who know him, Ken has been a tremendous leader, a man of insight. I have never met anyone who is … able to find good in other people than Ken,” Mayor Francis “Mac” Womack said during his morning announcement on Sept. 3, calling it “a sad day” for the township. “He had the kindness and the depth of perception that made him a tremendous police officer, a wonderful representative for his union, and ultimately a tremendous police director for our township. “He was a fine family man and all in town who knew him loved him,” the mayor said. McCormick joined the North Brunswick Police Department in September 1982 and graduated with the 38th Police Basic Training Class of the Middlesex County Police Academy, according to information provided by the NBPD. After attending college for criminal justice, working for the town during the summer and having a landscaping business, he decided to pursue a career as a policeman, according to an interview with the Sentinel in 2008. He was promoted to sergeant in 1995 and then to lieutenant in 2003. He had served as the Community Oriented Policing and Problem Solving (COPPS) coordinator and held management positions in the department’s Traffic Safety and Detective Bureaus, Special Investigation Unit, and Patrol Division. The North Brunswick High School graduate had received numerous awards for excellence on duty. The township reorganized its police department in 2004, and McCormick took an oath to serve as director of public safety during the March 29 Township Council meeting, according to previous reports in (Continued on page 6)

South Brunswick teen teaches residents virtually how to make cloth masks for essential workers
By JENNIFER AMATO Managing Editor
H
ymavathi Gollakota is encouraging residents to attend her virtual mask-making workshops or sewing basics workshops in an effort to help the community. Hyma, a junior at South Brunswick High School, has not suffered any COVID-related tragedies in her close family, but decided she and her mother would make masks for essential personnel, homeless individuals, and basically anyone who needed masks during quarantine. She turned this newfound skill into her Girl Scout Gold Award: her project “Mask It!” is creating masks for those in need. “I have a very helpful team. I have been working with my neighbor, Arnavh Sinha, and his mother, Shweta Sinha, for a while. Mrs. Sinha put me in touch with Abhilasha Singh, who was coordinating the group of mask makers that I volunteered with earlier in the summer. They have been very helpful with my award so far. “My Girl Scout leader, Lakshmi Bandi, has been very essential to the process. In order to make masks in such a large quantity, I needed to teach some of my friends how to make masks so they could help
me. Danielle DeJesus, Victoria Cohen and Luna Koiwa have been super-helpful and hardworking, and make such amazing masks. “I am currently teaching more people how to make masks and offering virtual workshops to teach attendees how to make masks,” the 16-year-old said. As of press time, the team had made 150 masks and had another 100 masks in production. “The masks are made in our homes and we all use a sewing machine. A big challenge was having to teach some of the mask makers to sew in the first place. I would have to make them practice sewing in straight lines. It took me a while to pick up as well so I can’t judge,” she said. She said the personal cloth masks are made from materials that can be found around the house. The masks, which help to halt the spread of COVID-19, can be thrown in a washing machine with other items, she said. The current order is being donated to South Brunswick High School. “We are going to donate 200 masks in total now, but the number might increase soon,” she said. Hyma said her goals for the future are to make the project more large scale, to donate to more places, and to recruit mask makers from all over. “This project is important to me because, like anyone else, I would like for the fast recovery from the pandemic and for things to return to normal. “In order to slowly start opening back up the country, people need to protect themselves and others by wearing masks. “I hope that by making these masks and teaching people the skill of sewing, I’m having my own impact in the fight against the pandemic.

“The skill of sewing is extremely useful, not just for making masks, but for all kinds of purposes. It will definitely be useful to you in the future. “Even if people don’t want to volunteer, I would love to just teach people how to make masks or teach them sewing basics. And finally, it would be amazing if my Gold Award is approved. It’s been a goal of mine for a while and I need people’s help to achieve it,” she said. Monmouth Mobile Home Park delivers food during COVID crisis
T
he Monmouth Mobile Home Park has created a garden to help provide nutritious food to help families who are struggling during COVID-19. “The staff at Monmouth Mobile Home Park will be harvesting fresh vegetables and delivering farm basket’ to residents free of charge,” Dan Mandell, manager of Monmouth Mobile Home Park, said in a prepared statement. “Our focus is on feeding families and encouraging healthy eating during these uncertain times.” Monmouth Mobile Home Park started the community garden program last year and it was a huge success. “We want to do everything we can to give back to the community and we really thought that providing nutritious food was a great way to do this,” Mandell said in the statement. In light of the coronavirus pandemic, the program was expanded this year to try to feed as many people as possible. The park has also worked in conjunction with the South Brunswick Food Pantry and Patel Brothers Market to get food to anyone who might need it, according to the statement. the Sentinel. By appointing McCormick, Womack said at the time, he fulfilled his 2001 pledge to “hire a director from within the department if he ever had the chance.” McCormick’s predecessor, Michael Moriarty, could only dedicate part of his time to the township after Sept. 11, 2001, when the U.S. Coast Guard called him to active duty; in Moriarty’s absence, McCormick often performed the duties of the director, according to past reports.
In 2004, while still a lieutenant, he was named the director of public safety, according to the NBPD. In 2008, McCormick retired from the sworn officer capacity of the department after 25 years of service and served as the assistant to the mayor for six months. He then returned as the director of public safety as a civilian. “The entire Township of North Brunswick is mourning today the death of Police Director Kenneth McCormick. Ken’s quick smile, sharp wit, intense integrity, unwavering compassion and dedication to family, friends, coworkers and officers made him a hero to those he knew and

those he led,” the police department posted on its Facebook page. “The hallmarks of Ken’s tenure as police director were foresight, compassion and caring for the men and women of the department, and a dedication toward justice. Director McCormick leaves a legacy of ingenuity and integrity and his imprint upon our township will be felt for generations to come.” Visitation was held Sept. 8 at Our Lady of Peace Church, North Brunswick. Funeral services were held the morning of Sept. 9 on the Great Lawn at Community Park. Interment was at Van Liew Cemetery on Georges Road. “We express our heartfelt condolences

New Jerseyans do not benefit from gas tax
R
onald Reagan said long ago, “Here we go again.” First, New Jersey, on Aug. 29, announced a 10% increase in the gasoline tax after people are still enraged about two recent increases in the same tax. New Jersey is near the refineries and near the ports just miles away. We are not in Montana or Idaho. New Jersey should have the cheapest gasoline taxes; instead we are burdened among the highest myriad of taxes in the nation. Gov. Phil Murphy and the State Legislators don’t have a clue about how commerce and capitalism work in America. Adam Smith and the Invisible Hand (The invisible hand describes the unintended social benefits of an individual’s self-interested actions, a concept that was first introduced by Adam Smith in The Theory of Moral Sentiments, written in 1759, invoking it in reference to income distribution.) There is an exodus of taxpayers, friends and relatives moving to the south – moving to Texas and to Florida with no income tax. How do North Carolina, South Carolina and Georgia have such beautiful roads with no toll roads?
New Jersey will be left with a socialized state with governmental control of all areas of life, and left with few taxpayers. Witness the exodus of taxpayers from California and New York City. Second, Murphy and the legislators have been promoting for years potheads in New Jersey with a recreational drug agenda. Recreational drugs have never worked in the history of world civilizations. We picked up thousands of people off the streets of Brooklyn in a “zombie state” from fake drugs in 2016. There will always be fake drugs with the promotion of recreational drugs. The U.S. spends billions of dollars on medical care for drug abusers, on rehabilitation, and on border security to stop the flow of drugs. The gasoline tax and the sales tax should be reduced to encourage business and commerce. Stop drugging and taxing the people. Also, stop mass mailing ballots, it leads to fraud. Congress sets Election Day – not Election Months or Year. Mass ballots are unconstitutional. Robert A. Paley North Brunswick

Charges filed against area man who allegedly ordered food without paying SOUTH BRUNSWICK — Following an extensive investigation by the South Brunswick Police Department and the Middlesex County Prosecutor’s Office, charges were filed relating to numerous cases of cyber harassment committed from Jan. 15 to April 9. Sudeep Khetani, 34, of Kendall Park, allegedly made several hundred calls to numerous local restaurants using false phone numbers; ordered thousands of dollars worth of food without intent to pay for or pick up the food; and used harassing, threatening, sexually explicit and biased comments against employees who answered the phone, according to information provided by the South Brunswick Police Department on Aug. 25. In addition, Khetani is a suspect in similar incidents in several surrounding townships. South Brunswick Police Department
Chief Raymond J. Hayducka praised Detective Tim Hoover’s tenacity in the case. “Detective Hoover filed many subpoenas, conducted numerous interviews, and exhausted all investigative means to bring this case to a successful conclusion. His hard work put an end to Khetani’s alarming actions,” he said in the statement. Khetani’s alleged actions came at the height of the COVID-19 pandemic when many local restaurants were struggling to stay afloat, causing additional hardship to their owners, according to the statement. Khetani was also charged with promoting prostitution stemming from an unrelated 2019 incident, according to the statement. Khetani was being lodged at the Middlesex County Adult Correction Center pending his first court appearance, as of press time.

IMPROVEYOUR LAWN THIS FALL! We Can Help By Aerating & Overseeding!
Compacted soil and heavy thatch are the two biggest obstacles to a beautiful lawn. They tend to suffocate grass plants by preventing air, water, and nutrients from reaching the root zone. This means your lawn looks less than satisfactory in spite of adequate fertilization, water, and tender loving care! Aeration opens up the thatch and helps relieve compaction. It should be a regular part of your annual lawn maintenance program. Aeration is accomplished by the use of a machine equipped with cylinder-like spoons designed to penetrate and shatter the soil. Half inch diameter plugs of thatch and soil are actually pulled from the ground during this process. The plunging action of the spoons into the ground opens up the soil-allowing the grass plants to breathe and promoting deeper, healthier roots.
Major benefits of aeration...
• Increases air, water, and nutrient movement to the root zone • Intensifies decomposition of thatch • Helps relieve soil compaction • Stimulates new growth • Improves drainage • Provides a better environment for overseeding • Increases the effectiveness of applied fertifizers & control products • Incorporates organic matter into the soil • Increases tolerance to heat and cold

Junior Coding Association teaches computer science locally and abroad By JENNIFER AMATO Managing Editor
SOUTH BRUNSWICK – Over the past year, friends Jeffrey Paulraj and Adityaa Magesh Kumar created and expanded an education-based nonprofit organization, the Junior Coding Association, across international borders. The South Brunswick High School seniors started out in November 2019 with the goal of creating a free and immersive education in computer science that would be accessible to students in elementary and middle school. “This would help these students develop a passion for computer science and pursue it in high school, college and beyond,” Jeffrey said. The two equally divide the work of creating and monitoring lessons. They created a series of video lessons and corresponding assignments which covered the breadth of an introductory computer science course, and used tools like EdPuzzle, which is an educational video-sharing service, and Google Classroom to disperse their material, Jeffrey said. “Since we use the flipped classroom ap-

proach, students can access our lessons at any time; however, we usually set a oneweek deadline on our assignments. “We also recruit volunteers to grade the assignments and offer personalized feedback for each of our students’ assignments; we have worked with our public library to award service hours to our volunteers,” he said. They hold monthly check-ins at the public library. “We had a strong response, with more than 30 students coming to our first session. Once social distancing and quarantine went into effect in March, we decided to start a new class and opened it to all ages. “To date, we have approximately 100 registrations in seven countries, including Nigeria, Kenya and Pakistan. In the past few months, Adityaa and I have been advertising our new class starting in September and have also led a seminar sharing our story,” Jeffrey said. Jeffrey said they were able to expand internationally by contacting popular social media pages to post fliers regarding their classes and spread the organization’s mission of providing quality computer sci-

ence education for free. Students can access the lessons at whatever time is best for them, eliminating the time barrier, he said. “Since we use Google Classroom for communications, which has Google Translate built in, we haven’t had any problems with the language barrier. Also, code is a universal language. “Other than a few keywords like ‘for,’ ‘if’ and ‘print,’ most of our code consists of numbers and other non-alphabetic characters. “While this may seem complicated, we have actually seen kids picking up the material pretty quickly as we use diagrams and examples to illustrate each concept,” Jeffrey said. Jeffrey’s interest in coding began when he saw how many applications there are in the real world. “If you take a look at any industry in the world right now, chances are it’s been revolutionized by computer science in the last 10 years. When I took my introductory computer science class in high school, I was able to adapt to the material pretty well and decided to get more involved with computer science,” he said. He plans to pursue computer science in college and continue to explore its different applications in varied fields. ) Adityaa said he is interested in coding because he is enthralled by technology and

its ability to influence the world. “Computer science is especially intriguing to me because it allows one to create websites, apps and other services that can be of great use in people’s daily lives. “I became deeply engaged in computer science in high school and since then, I continue exploring the vast field of opportunities it presents,” he said. Adityaa has an interest in machine learning, data science, web development, etc.; he said he will likely apply as a computer science major in college. So far, both students have taken Advanced Placement Computer Science and Android Mobile App Development at South Brunswick High School, and will be taking classes in Virtual Reality and Data Structures this year. “We are really fortunate to have such an extensive computer science department at our school,” Adityaa said. They have taught themselves other programming languages and concepts, such as Python, JavaScript, databases and web development. “We believe students have a lot to gain from computer science. For one, simply writing code and trying to make it as efficient as possible really improves your analytic thinking skills and really helps you to identify patterns and trends even in other areas of life. “Also, having a computer science background will help you no matter what field
you decide to pursue a career in. If you are going into finance, you can use computer science to determine trends in stocks. “If you are going into entrepreneurship, you can use computer science to create appealing websites. If you are going into the humanities, you can use computer science to identify trends in the way people have responded to different events or ideas. Everyone has something to gain from computer science,” Adityaa said. Overall, they see a huge benefit to learning coding and enjoy teaching their fellow classmates and younger students. “Since computer science has grown so much in the last few years, there are many more opportunities in the field and more students who are interested in it. “However, this also means it is hard to find a place to start. Because of this, many students feel overwhelmed when they start learning computer science or avoid the field altogether. “At Junior Coding Association, we try to simplify computer science concepts to a point where students in elementary school can understand and enjoy it. Students can spend as much or as little time on a topic as the need to, and have 24/7 access to Adityaa and I through Google Classroom. “By giving students this proper introduction to computer science, without them feeling the pressure to reach benchmarks at specific points of time, we have found that students really enjoy their experience with
us. In fact, we have seen some of our students create their own projects and share them with us,” Jeffrey said. Adityaa added, “I believe it’s important to give back to one’s community. My experience with high school computer science has served as a catalyst for my passion in the field. “Through the Junior Coding Association, I hope to remove any learning obstacles or curves that may otherwise be present when there is a lack of personal assistance. I don’t want to see peers and younger students struggling and unable to receive help in computer science classes. “Junior Coding Association can combat this by preparing students for the rigors of computer science while offering a personalized experience. On top of that, a basic understanding of computer science will likely be necessary in the future to be successful in various jobs.” Individuals of all ages can register for their next session, which begins later this month. The Google registration form is available at https://forms.gle/4gDYoy94hsQpdGnk9 For more information about the Junior Coding Association, visit www.juniorcodingassociation.com/ Contact Jennifer Amato at jamato@newspapermediagroup.com
