outh Brunswick Township comprises nearly 208 miles of highways and roadways ranging from two lane highways like Route 27 to six lanes of travel on parts of Route 1. Highway safety is one of the primary concerns at the South Brunswick Police

Department, Police Chief Raymond Hayducka said in a prepared statement on Oct. 12. “The events of nearly two weeks ago just remind all of us of the dangers of crossing the highways at improper locations,” Hayducka said in the statement, re-

ferring to Angelina Rivera, who was killed after jumping over the median on Route 1 in South Brunswick. So far in 2020, 132 pedestrians have died on New Jersey roadways. “Angelina Rivera, age 14, became one (Continued on page 20)

he train station project in North Brunswick is underway, creating a community, not just a method of commuting, according to Diane GutierrezScaccetti, commissioner of the New Jersey Department of Transportation (DOT). State, county and local officials announced on Oct. 14 that NJ Transit has approved the release of a Request for Proposal for the design and engineering of the train station, to be located on Main Street off Route 1 north in North Brunswick. “Today’s announcement is a gamechanging moment in building this critically needed transportation hub on the Northeast Corridor and getting it completed expeditiously,” Middlesex County Freeholder Director Ronald G. Rios said during the press conference, held virtually due to the ongoing coronavirus pandemic. “The North Brunswick train station will bring relief to one of the state’s busiest rail lines, reduce traffic on Route 1, and attract new revenue to the region. For the county, the project has become emblematic of our continuous focus on forward momentum and prosperity for all our residents, businesses and partners,” Rios said. Middlesex County, through the Middlesex County Improvement Authority, will serve as project manager through an agreement with NJ Transit for the design and construction of the train station, which

‘Joker’ turns from comedy to horror, writing latest thriller from his Princeton home By JENNIFER AMATO Managing Editor

I

James S. “Murr” Murray of “Impractical Jokers” fame releases newest book, “Don’t Move”

t may not be impossible to spot one of your favorite Tenderloins in the greater Princeton area. James S. “Murr” Murray, one of the stars of “Impractical Jokers” and “The Misery Index” on truTV, moved to Princeton last fall with his fiancee. “[We’re] absolutely loving it,” Murr said. “My fiancée and I are huge fans of Witherspoon Grill. If it were up to us, we would be there every night. “Having lived in New York City my entire life, it’s been wonderful to get out, finally breathe fresh air, and hike and kayak in the area. Staten Island was a great place to grow up – and that’s where I met my fellow Impractical Jokers – but Princeton is a great place to create our new life together and one day raise kids together.” Although Murr is best known for his comedic acts and stunts on the popular truTV practical joke show, he said he got his degree in writing from Georgetown University and always dreamed of becoming an author one day. “The success of ‘Impractical Jokers’ finally gave me the chance to start my alternate career as a novelist. Writing and improvisation are equally difficult, surprising and rewarding. But both represent my personality equally well. It’s all about affecting people in a fun, positive way through creativity of all kinds,” he said. Murr said he grew up reading and watching thrillers, “so it was kind of a natural progression for my writing to spring from that early interest.” He said he enjoys “The Meg” by Steve Alten, “The Andromeda Strain” by Michael Crichton, and is a personal fan of R.L. Stine and Brad Meltzer. They always say, “Write what you know” Murr said about delving into a career in horror writing. His newest thriller, “Don’t Move,” was released on Oct. 20 – after being written from his home in Princeton. He also recorded the audiobook from there. Megan Forrester has barely survived the unthinkable. Six months ago, she witnessed a horrific accident that killed her husband and son, and lives with the guilt of knowing she could have done more to save them. Now, Megan hopes to mend the pieces of her broken spirit by attending a local church group’s annual camping trip. But the church group members — riddled with dark secrets

Through the challenge that is the COVID-19 pandemic, Murr said he is trying to cope as best as possible. “Well, just like everyone else, it’s been tough adjusting to this new world. We’ve found some comfort in raising money for charities and frontline workers who are out there keeping people healthy. Melyssa and I are lucky that we’ve had all this extra time for planning our wedding! “As for the Jokers, we’ve been filming a new TV show from home called ‘Impractical Jokers: Dinner Party.’ And we finally went back to work filming ‘Impractical Jokers’ as well. Thankfully, because I missed my friends dearly,” he said. Murray is a writer, executive producer and actor, best known as “Murr” on the hit television show Impractical Jokers along with his comedy troupe, The Tenderloins. He has worked as the senior vice president of Development for NorthSouth Productions for over a decade and is the owner of Impractical Productions, LLC. He recently starred in Impractical Jokers: The Movie, and also appears in the television series The Misery Index on TBS. oter Information Centers (VIC) in Highland Park, Monroe and Sayreville will remain open through Election Day, Nov. 3. The VICs will provide voting services including replacement ballots, signature verification and instructions on how to participate in the 2020 General Election. The centers are located at Highland Park Borough Hall, 221 S. Fifth Ave., Highland Park; the Monroe Township Library, 4 Municipal Plaza, Monroe Township; and Sayreville Borough Hall, ‚Äã167

Main St., Sayreville. All three locations will be open from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. Monday through Saturday until Nov. 2, and then from 6 a.m. to 8 p.m. on Nov. 3. Members of the public will be subject to a temperature screening upon entrance to the VIC and will be required to wear a face covering at all times. Representatives from the Board of Elections will also be available to contact virtually at each VIC to answer questions residents may have regarding registration

updates and how to ensure their ballot is properly cast. “Once again, Middlesex County is going above and beyond for its residents. Not only did Middlesex County commit to providing Vote By Mail ballots to residents with postage included and far surpassed the number of ballot dropbox locations required by the state – 32 locations compared to the state’s mandated 10 – but the county is now offering unique VICs throughout the county to assist our residents in casting their ballot,” Middlesex County Freehold-

er Director Ronald G. Rios said in a statement provided by the Middlesex County Office of Communication. “The opening of these VICs will be a tremendous asset to our residents.” VICs will be staffed by county clerk election officials who can immediately access voter registration data and determine if the voter has been issued a Vote by Mail ballot, and whether or not a ballot has been received by the election officials, according to the statement. If the voter has not been issued a Vote by Mail ballot, they can apply at the center. Voters will also be able to apply for and receive a replacement ballot – these duplicate ballots are issued in the event a ballot has been lost, damaged, or the voter does not receive it. VICs are not polling locations and ballots cannot be cast inside a VIC. Each VIC is located within the immediate vicinity of a Middlesex County drop box at which a voter may drop off a completed Vote By Mail ballot. The county will operate 97 polling locations on Election Day throughout the county at which residents may complete a paper provisional ballot. Provisional ballots will not be available at the VICs. In addition, the county clerk’s office has opened to the public, and with extended hours. The County Clerk – Division of Elections Office located in the County Administration Building in New Brunswick will be open to the public from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. Monday to Saturday for residents looking for information and assistance on how to participate in the 2020 General Election, offering signature verification and providing duplicate ballots. “While the COVID-19 pandemic has required us to restrict public access to the county clerk’s office for the sake of the health and safety of our staff, we welcome the opportunity to bring the public back into our office, practicing all necessary safety measures, to assist them in exercising their right to vote,” Middlesex County Clerk Elaine Flynn said in the statement. “This election cycle may be unique in the way our residents vote, but what is not unique is our commitment to ensuring they have all the necessary information and tools to do so.” Most voters have several ways to vote in the 2020 election, all via paper ballots, which include: • Voters may mail the ballots via the United States Postal Service at any time before Nov. 3. Ballots must be postmarked by Nov. 3. Postage is included at no cost to residents. • Voters may place the ballot in one of

Middlesex County awards $3 million in Small Business Relief Grants

I

n its first round of distribution, Middlesex County will award grants to 123 local businesses with a collective total of $3,039,716 from its CARES Act Small Business Relief Grant (MC-SBRG) program, which uses federal CARES Act funding. The grants serve to reimburse costs and loss of revenue associated with adapting business operations in a COVID-19 environment. Payments ranging from $410.97 to the maximum $30,000, with an average grant payment of $24,714, will be distribut-

ed to small businesses negatively impacted by COVID-19 starting Oct. 14, according to a statement provided by the Middlesex County Office of Communication. “The COVID-19 pandemic has had many unintended consequences, including for our small business communities. Not only have they been asked to limit or halt operations, but as we begin to reopen our economy, these cash-strapped businesses have been asked to adapt their businesses accordingly, making it even more difficult to make ends meet,” Middlesex County

Freeholder Director Ronald G. Rios said in the statement. “These grants will certainly make a positive impact in our business community.” “The county’s commitment to its small business owners is fierce, and this first round of funding being distributed to 123 small businesses will make a huge difference in the lives of these businesses, the people they employ, and the communities they serve,” Freeholder Leslie Koppel, chair of the Finance Committee, said in the statement.

Designing Your Dreams

l l was announced on Oct. 30, 2019. This is ,the first time a county has been allowed to lmanage the construction of a crucial infra-structure project. “The MCIA stands ready with all partoners involved to move this project foryward,” said H. James Polos, executive ,director of the MCIA and a former county ,freeholder. ; Polos said $5 million is earmarked for xthe first phase of a six-phase project. On Oct. 28, 2016, officials announced ;the receipt of $50 million from the state ;Transportation Trust Fund for the project. ;Middlesex County officials pledged $20 hmillion to add a station stop at the former ;Johnson & Johnson site. With the RFPs to be released next week -and due back in 45 to 60 days, the design tphase could take 18 to 24 months before a tshovel is put in the ground, officials said. - There is no timeframe yet for when rid,ers may actually be on trains at the new nstation. 9 “The North Brunswick train station represents more than just convenience by eproviding an outlet between Jersey Avenue rand Princeton Junction. It is an example of wthe future-forward thinking of Middlesex sCounty, as the county spearheads econom-

ic development and growth in this region,” said Freeholder and NJ Transit board member Shanti Narra, who is a North Brunswick resident and a former member of the Township Council. “And not the least, more people on trains and fewer people on the roads will create a sustainable future for us all.” Narra said she is “acutely aware” of the challenges commuters face, as she traveled into New York City for 16 years. The project will reduce traffic along Route 1; increase revenue for North Brunswick and the region; make Middlesex County more commutable; connect the employment markets in Philadelphia, New Jersey and New York; reduce crowding on trains; and add convenience for those going to work, according to comments by area officials. The project also aligns itself with Destination 2040, which will guide how Middlesex County will grow and change over the next 20 years. Rios said the county will become “an attractive destination to live, work and play in for generations to come.” “Our announcement today confirms we are moving full steam ahead, even during a global pandemic,” he said. Scaccetti added, “By creating a hub of transportation in Middlesex County, we give our residents and new residents a chance of where they choose to reside.”

She said the DOT is about more than just transportation, but instead mobility, and the train station project is “a new model for delivering a community-based train station” because of the transit village that surrounds it. She also said the Transportation Trust Fund, which is meant to build projects focused on walking, driving, biking and mass transit, is being put to good use in this project, a “multi-model transportation network we worked so hard to develop.” North Brunswick Mayor Francis “Mac” Womack thanked all involved for their vision; for being caring; and for their competence, skill and dedication to the train station project. “This train station will make a positive reverberating impact to this region and to everyone who resides in it,” Womack said. As announced in 2019 by Rios and the Board of Chosen Freeholders, the MCIA has successfully pivoted its focus from general county services to primarily economic development, leveraging its ability to bond and finance projects, according to information provided by the Middlesex County Office of Communication. With Middlesex County’s strong AAA rating, secured for the past 20 consecutive years, the MCIA obtains financing at very low interest rates, allowing major capital ventures to be undertaken without increasing county taxes, in most cases.

Additionally, the MCIA has a professional staff with experience with redevelopment projects that span decades to ensure quality, timeliness and cost efficiency in its execution, according to the statement. Garden Homes Development, which has been developing the MainStreetNB project since 2006, began its vision for a transit village and associated train station in 2006. Currently, a Target, Costco with gas station, drive-up Panera Bread, Marriott and Greene Turtle are on the property, along with condominium units. The second phase of the project was contingent upon the train station. When the project is completed, there will be 300,000 square feet of freestanding large retail establishments, 450,000 square feet of mixed use retail and commercial space, 50,000 square feet of freestanding commercial space, 195,000 square feet of office space, 1,875 residential units, and the hotel, for a total of 1.25 million square feet of development on the property. “We want speed, but we also want quality, and we want innovation,” Scaccetti said. “Our goal is to really supply that transit village with transit quickly and as reasonably as possible.” For updates on the transit village project, visit www.mainstreetnb.com Contact Jennifer Amato at jamato@newspapermediagroup.com

hen you walk into a good Italian restaurant, no one needs to tell you where you are. In fact, if you were blindfolded, you would still be able to have a good sense or where you were. First off, the smells emanating from the kitchen would be a dead giveaway. If that weren’t enough, maybe the Sinatra music playing in the background or the clink, clink of wine glasses would be the clinchers. Either way, the ambiance of the Italian vibe is usually unmistakable. Such is the case, as well, when you get your fist look at the 2020 Alfa Romeo Stelvio Ti Sport AWD compact SUV.

Quite simply, there is something unmistakably Italian about the look, feel and drive of this SUV. It has that Italian panache and flair. “In a world of bland crossovers, the Stelvio is a spicy Italian meatball in a Ferragamo suit,” write the editors of Car and Driver. That, my friends, is an almost perfect description. Introduced in 2016, the Stelvio is considered a compact luxury crossover SUV that competes with the likes of the BMW X3 and the Mercedes GLC. This crossover is produced at Alfa Romeo’s Cassino Plant in Piedimonte, San Germano, Italy. It is currently Alfa Ro-

For positive points, the editor’s at Car and Driver noted of the Stelvio that it had “unmistakably Italian styling, lively handling and gutsy turbo charged engine.” Agreed. Car and Driver hit the Alfa Romeo for having “a tight cargo area and untested reliability.” I didn’t find the cargo area to be tight at all. with Italian and French cars. However, since most people lease their vehicles these days anyway, I don’t think reliability should be a major concern if you are considering leasing one of these vehicles because the Stelvo will be covered under the 4-year, 50,000 mile warranty offered, if you lease the vehicle for 3 years. On the other hand, if you are thinking of purchasing the Stelvio and keeping it long term, beyond the basic warranty coverage, you might want to find yourself an able bodied mechanic who can fix and repair Italian cars before purchasing.

South Brunswick hitting on all cylinders to start season By STEVEN BASSIN Staff Writer

T

here has been no slowing down the South Brunswick High School football team’s offense through the first two games of the 2020 season. The Vikings scored 45 points in its season opening victory over Perth Amboy and crossed over the 40-point mark in their victory on Oct. 9 against Edison’s John P. Stevens High School. A three touchdown performance from both sophomore quarterback Vincent Jairdullo and senior running back Majid Howard-Baker led South Brunswick to a 42-0 victory over the Hawks to improve to 2-0 on the season. The terrific start to the season has been very fun to watch for South Brunswick Coach John Viotto, who would tell you back in June that a season this fall probably wouldn’t be happening because of the coronavirus pandemic. “We have a great senior core with a lot of great sophomore and junior skill players that are leading us,” Viotto said. “Our kids have been doing a great job following all the protocols. They have been smart on and off the field. I’ve been really happy with all of that stuff.” South Brunswick jumped on the board in the final minute of the first quarter after a tough defensive stand at its own 24-yard line to stop J.P. Stevens’ opening drive. Jairdullo then drove the Vikings right down the field, converting a big fourth down on a 6-yard swing pass to wide receiver Brian Rawls to keep the chains moving to the J.P. Stevens’ 13-yard line. Two plays later, Jairdullo found the end zone, diving in from one yard out to give South Brunswick a 7-0 lead with 19.6 seconds left in the first quarter. The sophomore quarterback added his first passing touchdown of the night later

on in the first half with a 15-yard fade pass to senior tight end Jared Lauri. Jairdullo has seven total touchdowns through the first two games of the season, but knows more needs to be done going forward to keep the team’s early success going. “It goes to all the hard we put in during the offseason,” Jairdullo said. “We’re not satisfied though. It’s only Week 2. We have to keep getting better from here.” Howard-Baker had a stellar second quarter for the Vikings. The senior tailback extended the South Brunswick lead to 14-0 on the following possession after Jairdullo’s rushing touchdown, scampering to the end zone on a third and three for a 25-yard touchdown run. With just a little more than a minute left in the first half and the Vikings up 21-0, Howard-Baker crossed off a career milestone with his first punt return for a touchdown. The senior picked up the ball around his own 15-yard line and reversed field, streaking up the left sideline where he picked a cavalry of blocks from his teammates to cruise into the end zone to put the Vikings up 28-0 going into halftime. Both Jairdullo and Howard-Baker recorded their third touchdowns of the night on the first possession of the second half. Jairdullo hit Howard-Baker with a pass out of the backfield, and the senior tailback did the rest with a 38-yard sprint to the end zone, giving him a receiving touchdown to add to his rushing score and punt return for six. “I have a mindset of playing my hardest every game since it’s my last year as a South Brunswick Viking,” Howard-Baker said. “My team motivates me to push myself harder every day. It feels great to help my team out as much as I can.”

South Brunswick High School quarterback Vincent Jairdullo, above left, fires a six-yard swing pass from a first down that was caught by wide receiver Brian Rawls, above right, during the team’s game against Edison’s John P. Stevens High School on Oct. 9. South Brunswick is 2-0 to start the season.

Senior Justin Lawson ended the scoring affair for the Vikings with a 26-yard touchdown run in the fourth quarter. In the shutout victory, Lauri, senior Ahmad Alkilani and sophomore Khiri Summers each had a sack for the South Brunswick defense. Viotto is really happy to see his senior players make an impact on the field to start the season and glad they’re getting the opportunity to do so. “This means the world to them,” Viotto said of his senior players. “ They’re excited every day to be out there on the field. For some of them, this might be their last chance to play football, especially the last chance to play with their teammates.” South Brunswick will see a step up in competition the next two weeks with games against East Brunswick on Oct. 16 and Monroe on Oct. 23.

Viotto is excited to see his team let it loose against both schools in the upcoming weeks and see how his squad fares, especially on offense. Thinking that their season might be taken away from them just a couple months ago, Viotto can see that the great start to the season and being back on the field has been a great relief to his players. A From the smiles he sees on his athletes’1 faces under their masks to the excitementt his players bring onto the field, the second-6 year coach can tell how important it is tos his guys to be able to play football this fall.9 “The kids are so happy to be here,” Vi-1 otto said. “Even with masks on, you cano tell they’re smiling and having fun with1 their friends. It’s very important to theirs mental health. Being out here with their1 teammates is the most important thing tob 1 them right now.”

Assemblyman volunteers at Bentley Community Services SOUTH BRUNSWICK – Although a visit to Bentley Community Services Food Pantry by Assemblyman Roy Freiman (D-16) and two staff members was originally scheduled in April for National Volunteer month, they recently visited amidst struggles from the coronavirus pandemic. For seven years, Bentley Community Services (BCS), a designated 501 (c) 3 charitable organization, has been helping families, seniors and individuals in financial crisis regain self-sufficiency by providing a full range of high quality grocery provisions and more each week, offsetting/eliminating weekly grocery bills. BCS has distributed over 1.7 million pounds of high quality foods to date, according to information provided by BCS. As the main grocer, BCS creates access to healthy foods, facilitating healthy diets and nutrition so families benefit weekly from full shopping carts, feeding their families healthy and nutritious foods from the major food groups and more. The crucial monies that families save they then have to apply toward paying their monthly bills and expenses, reducing and paying off debts, medical bills and co-pays as these families work toward financial stability and security, according to the statement. BCS also offers educational and informational workshops throughout the year facilitated by profes-

sionals. Economic challenges, living paycheck to paycheck and the pandemic have many families struggling to makes ends meet. BCS has remained open since the start of the pandemic and continues to serve neighbors in need, according to the statement. BCS operated for two years and then outgrew its origins in Belle Mead and is located in the Monmouth Junction portion of South Brunswick where it serves clientele families that come from Somerset, Hunterdon, Middlesex, Mercer and Monmouth counties. Each week, families pack up full shopping carts for their families of provisions, picked up by BCS from numerous grocers, restaurants, farms, bakeries, distributors, wholesalers and food harvest programs. Provisions are sorted and checked by volunteers to be distributed each week into the households that certainly could use them. Anyone needing assistance should call BCS at 908-227-0684 for help. There are also several volunteer opportunities available. The warehouse distribution facility is located at 4064 Route 1, Monmouth Junction section of South Brunswick. For more information, call 908-227-0684 or visit www.bentleycommunityservices.org or www.facebook.com/bentleycommunityservices/

ST. JUDE NOVENA May the sacred heart of Jesus be the adored, glorified, loved and preserved throughout the world now and forever. Sacred heart of Jesus pray for us. St. Jude, worker of miracles, pray for us. St. Jude, hope of the hopeless, pray for us. Say this prayer nine times a day. By the eighth day your prayer will be answered. Say it for nine days. It has never been known to fail. Publication must be promised. Thank you, St. Jude.

G.B. Novenas PRAYER IS POWERFUL Oh, most beautiful flower of Mount Carmel, fruitful vine of splendor of Heaven, Blessed Mother of the son of God, Immaculate Virgin, assist me in my necessity. Oh, Star of the Sea, help me and show me herein you are my Mother. Oh, Holy Mary Mother of God, Queen of Heaven and Earth! I humbly beseech you from the bottom of my heart to succor me in this petition. There are none that can withstand your power. Oh, show me herein you are my Mother. Oh Mary conceived without sin pray for us who have recourse in thee (3Xs). Holy Mother, I place this cause in your hands (3Xs). Holy Spirit, you who solve all problems, light all roads so I can attain my goal. You who gave me the divine gift to forgive and forget all evil against me and that in all instances in my life you are with me, I want in this short prayer to thank you for all things as you confirm once again that I never want to be separated from you in eternal glory. Thank you for your mercy towards me and mine. + Say this prayer 3 consecutive days and publish prayer after petition is granted. Do not despair. Additional advice and petition. Pray the Rosary regularly. F.A.M.

of the youngest back on Sept. 30. Her death is a tragedy and one that we can avoid with the help of parents, schools, motorists and our entire community,” Hayducka said in the statement. In order to address the increasing dangers of pedestrian crossings, the police department has developed a three step plan: Step 1: Additional fencing along Route 1. “We are working with the New Jersey Department of Transportation to increase fencing along portions of the highway where officers have observed pedestrians crossing the divider. Previous areas that already have fencing have seen a significant reduction in pedestrian incidents,” Hayducka said in the statement. Step 2: Asking parents and guardians to have open conversations with young people about highway safety. “Talk to your son or daughter about the following topics: Phones down, heads up when walking. One in four high school students cross the road while distracted. “Cross at the corner, no shortcuts. Crossing at someplace other than an intersection accounts for 70% of child pedestrian deaths. “Be alert when it is dark out. Three out of four teen pedestrian deaths take place between 7 p.m. and 7 a.m. when it is dark out,” Hayducka said in the statement. Step 3: Motorist help. “If you see people crossing the highway at locations they should not be, call the South Brunswick Police Department at 732-329-4646 to report it. This will allow us to improve the tracking of problem locations. “My goal is to have zero pedestrian accidents and only with the support of the entire community can we make it happen,” Hayducka said in the statement.
