The residents of Gracie’s House in North Brunswick made solar plexus chakra spray, which contains essential oils that help heal, open and balance the solar plexus chakra. The spray is used in yoga practices, meditation or expanding daily energy.
outh Brunswick Police Department Traffic Safety Bureau officers, along with Patrol Bureau officers, will be conducting an enhanced truck enforcement crackdown over the next month around the township. The first phase of this effort is focused on the Kendall Park section of town. Officers will be targeting traffic on New Road between Route 1 and Route 27, according to information provided by the police department on Oct. 20. (Continued on page 7)
South Brunswick officers de-escalate situation at hotel
T
he South Brunswick Police Department announced the successful resolution to a gunman at an area hotel on Oct. 16. “So often you only hear of these cases when officers are forced into a deadly situation. Here, officers were confronted by a gunman who threatened to harm others and was acting out. Officers used de-escalation techniques and time to safely take him into custody. This is a credit to the officers and their training,” Police Chief Raymond Hayducka said in the statement released on Oct. 19. The incident unfolded just after 2 p.m. at the Hotel Vicenza, 3793 Route 1, South Brunswick. Officers arrived to find a 46-year-old male guest of the hotel reportedly had an argument with a staff member, and allegedly pulled out a handgun. Police set up a perimeter and attempted to make contact and de-escalate the situation, according to the statement.
According to reports, the suspect repeatedly paced back and forth between the front breezeway and rear balcony of his second-floor room, and kept yelling profanities at unoccupied cars in the parking lot, according to the statement. At one point, Smith began using his cellphone to videotape officers while blowing kisses, according to reports. Sgt. Anthony Pisano, Detective Rick Delucia, Private First Class Mike Leung, Officer Ryan Bartunek, Officer Kent English and Officer Jason Stonkus approached the man on the second floor. He reportedly retreated and ran back into his room, locking the door. Officers negotiated for 30 minutes trying to get him to speak with them. His erratic behavior continued with him yelling about diabetes and who he was going to vote for, according to reports. Officers then made attempts to contact family members and were able to speak to the man’s sister. At 4:45 p.m. the man
reportedly opened the door briefly and Delucia and English grabbed him from the room and pulled him into the breezeway, according to reports. The suspect was placed under arrest and transported to Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital in New Brunswick for evaluation. Detectives obtained a telephonic search warrant to search the room. A search of the room located a Taurus 9MM handgun, two fully loaded magazines, 27 ounces of marijuana, a pair of black gloves, a black ski mask, Ziplock bags and a scale, according to the statement. The man has been charged with aggravated assault with a firearm, unlawful possession of a weapon, possession of a weapon by a convicted felon, terroristic threats, and distribution of controlled dangerous substances. On Oct. 16, while the man was awaiting evaluation in the emergency room of
Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital, two South Brunswick officers were guarding him. The man allegedly began to act up, even while cuffed to his hospital bed, according to the statement. At one point, he threw urine at the hospital staff, according to the allegations. The officers moved in and the man allegedly spit in their faces. Thus, the man has been charged with two additional counts of aggravated assault for spitting on the officers. Both officers required medical treatment. As of Oct. 19, Smith remained in the emergency room at the hospital with two South Brunswick officers guarding him until he can be moved to a secure facility. “Too many people don’t realize the risks and dangers officers are willing to take to keep their communities safe. This group of officers showed the best of who we are,” Hayducka said in the statement.

Three men charged in attempted murder of two people SOUTH BRUNSWICK – Three men have been charged in connection to the stabbing and attempted murder of two people. The case began when police received a 911 call at 7:35 p.m. on Oct. 4 of two people stabbed in a motor vehicle at the corner of White Oak Court and Bard Drive North, according to information provided by Chief Raymond J. Hayducka of the South Brunswick Police Department on Oct. 21. Arriving officers discovered a grey Audi with heavy front end damage and two males age 18 and 20 outside of it suffering stab wounds to the chest and arms, according to reports. Officers began medical treatment. Both victims were taken by South Brunswick EMS and Monmouth Junction First Aid Squad to Robert Wood Johnson University
Hospital in New Brunswick. One victim suffered a collapsed lung, according to the statement. An investigation by Detective Rick Delucia determined that the two victims and the three suspects had a dispute originating in East Brunswick in mid-September. On Oct. 4, the men met up in the Southridge Woods Apartment Complex in South Brunswick. The dispute escalated and the victims fled in their car, according to reports. The victims became lost on Bard Drive as they fled trying to get back to East Brunswick. Moments later, the suspects, in a black Acura, allegedly caught up to the victims, and the two vehicles collided, according to the statement. The suspects exited their vehicle, reportedly smashed the window on the Acura, and began to assault the victims, according to the statement. After assaulting the victim, the suspect fled
the scene, according to reports. Detectives and crime scene technicians recovered latent prints, physical evidence and a nearby Ring doorbell video that captured the assault, according to the statement. Several hours later, Officer Andre Civil located the suspect’s Acura parked unoccupied approximately a half mile away. Detectives conducted several interviews which combined with the physical evidence led to the charges, according to the statement. Charged in the case are a 21-year-old resident of the Dayton section of South Brunswick, who is alleged to have stabbed the victims. He is facing charges of attempted murder, possession of a weapon for an unlawful purpose, and aggravated assault; A 19-year-old resident of the Monmouth Junction section of South Bruns-
wick. He is alleged to have smashed the window and assaulted the victims. He is charged with aggravated assault and con-f spiracy to commit aggravated assault; and c A 19-year-old resident of Dayton. He isa alleged to have driven the suspect vehicle and assaulted the victims. He is chargedh with assault and luring. f “Violent crime is uncommon in ourc community, but when it occurs we will use all the resources to track down those responsible,” Hayducka said in the statement. Hayducka thanked the Middlesex County Prosecutor’s Office and New Jersey State Police for their assistance on the case. He also recognized the teamwork of Delucia, Sgt. Mike Pellino, Officer Brian Luck, Civil, and Officer Gagan Chopra for solving the case.

who is leading the effort, said, “We conduct these campaigns to raise awareness of local ordinance restrictions on truck traffic. We don’t want overweight trucks in residential neighborhoods that should not be there. They are only allowed to use the road if they are making a local delivery.” Message boards alerting trucks to the weight restrictions have already been placed in the enforcement zone. Overweight vehicles cause damage to local and state roadways. Enforcement programs like this will increase awareness and promote commercial vehicle safety.

Greg’s Memorial Garden in Old Bridge received the Garden of Distinction award for Outdoor Home Garden. Gerri Farrell of Parlin received the Proud Participant award for a Public Space Garden. Milagros Pasamba of Edison received the Proud Participant award for Outdoor Home Garden. For the first time in its 45-year history, the 2020 Gardening Contest was conducted
fully online, with contestants sharing photos of their outdoor gardens, houseplant collections, or public space gardens, and answering detailed questions about their entries, according to the statement. With just over 500 completed entries received in 2020, 122 were recognized with a Blue Ribbon Award; 160 entries were deemed Gardens of Distinction; and 259 were awarded a Proud Participant. In reviewing the variety of entries in this year’s contest, Sam Robertson, PHS program manager of Gardener Engagement, said, “As always, PHS staff and our contest judges enjoyed viewing the beauty of each garden submission – but during
this challenging summer, we were particularly impressed by the creativity and resourcefulness showcased. With many of us spending more time at home, we were delighted to see how gardeners recruited family members to support their garden work. All of us at PHS congratulate the hundreds of participants who took the time to bring beauty to their communities and to the larger gardening audience in the area.” Complete results from this year’s competition are available on PHS’s website, and select gardens will be spotlighted on the PHS Home Gardening Facebook Group.

ON THE ROAD PETER PERROTTA
2020 Corvette Stingray Convertible
I
n 1953, the engineers and designers at Chevrolet introduced to the world the first generation Corvette – a two seat convertible sports car that was supposed to “wow” the American consumer. Chevrolet produced 300 of this new model, which, at that time sold for a whopping $3,498. Reviews of the new American sports car were mixed and sales fell far short of expectations. The Corvette program was nearly canceled. Well, a funny thing happened on the way to becoming, arguably, the greatest American iconic automobile in history. The designers and engineers at Chevrolet persisted and kept tinkering with what they knew would eventually catch on to be a popular sports car. They were right! Now, a full 67 years later, Chevrolet is still “wowing” the world with its Corvette Stingray. Not satisfied with resting on its laurels, for what has been a great American success story, Chevrolet has stood the American motoring public literally on its head with the eighth generation Corvette Stingray – the 2020 Chevrolet Corvette Stingray Convertible. What is different about this all-new, totally redesigned – from the ground up – Corvette? Well, quite frankly, folks, everything. I recently spent a full week behind the wheel of this new Corvette – a stunning Rapid Blue with a Sky Cool Gray interior and a hard-top convertible that goes down with a simple push of a button. First off, this new Corvette doesn’t look anything like your grandfather’s Corvette. It’s totally redesigned look – very aggressive, sporty and sculpted – lends itself more to that of the Italian Lamborghini than the Vette we have been used to seeing (see photo). If public reaction and head turning ability could be rated, I would have to give this new Corvette a solid 10 on a scale of 1 to 10.
I must honestly say, that in all my years of road testing cars for review, I have never seen a car turn as many heads as this one. Strangers would take pictures of it in parking lots. Fellow motorists would snap cell phone shots of it as you passed them by. And, it was hard to go to the local Starbucks or supermarket without someone stopping me and wanting to talk about it. Just a simply amazing reaction from the general motoring public. But, it’s not just the exterior design that’s groundbreaking with this new Corvette, there is much more packed inside. The most obvious groundbreaking new design with this 2020 Corvette, is that it is Chevrolet’s first ever production mid-engine Corvette. For 67 years prior, all Corvettes were produced as front engine, rear wheel drive roadsters. Not this one. “Corvette has always represented the pinnacle of innovation and boundary pushing at GM,” says GM president, Mark Reuss. “The traditional front-engine vehicle reached its limits of performance, necessitating the new layout. In terms of comfort and fun, it still looks and feels like a Corvette, but drives better than any vehicle in Corvette history,” he adds. I would have to agree. Most front engine, rear wheel drive roadsters I have driven, are no fun to drive in the rain or snow. Most of the time, you end up fishtailing all over the place. Not a very secure feeling. Not with this new mid-engine Corvette. The second day I had this tester, I ventured to take it out in a driving rain storm on Route 295. The mid-engine design worked extremely well. I selected the “weather” mode on the driving style selector and securely went 65 to 75 miles per hour in the rain without ever feeling unsafe. The mid-engine design affords this sportster a very equal weight distribution. There are several versions of the new Corvette, model wise. The one I drove was the LT1 convertible that carries a base

sticker price of $66,400. With a few options added and a $1,095 destination and delivery charge, my tester carried a bottom line sticker price of $70,880. The added options on my tester included: $1,295 for carbon flash painted nacelles and body color convertible top; $1,195 for the performance exhaust; $500 for the Rapid Blue exterior paint job and $395 for the blue seat belts. The editors at Car and Driver noted as high points of the new Vette: “Supercar performance at an amazing price, comfortable on the road and incredible on the track, much improved interior quality.” Powering this new Corvette is the standard 6.2 liter, V-8 engine that puts out an impressive 490 horsepower and 470 pound feet of torque. This car is plenty fast, folks. If you put it in the “track” mode it is incredibly fast. In fact, the local police loved just tailing me just to see if I was going to misbehave in this beast. Chevrolet officials claim that if you get the new Corvette equipped with the Z51 performance package, it then becomes the
fastest Corvette in history – able to get from 0 to 60 miles per hour in 2.8 seconds. My overall driving impression after one week behind the wheel of this new Vette, is quite simply, “Wow!” – a totally exhilarating experience to drive one of these automotive wonders. If you are itching to buy or lease one of these new Corvettes, it may not be as easy as you think. In some areas, there is as much as a one-year waiting list. In fact, some dealers are reported to be charging a market adjusted $10,000 to $20,000 over sticker premium on the car. The EPA fuel consumption ratings on this Corvette give it an average of 19 miles per gallon – with 27 mpg on the highway and 15 in city driving. The EPA estimates that the annual average fuel cost for driving this Corvette would be $5,250 as it uses about 5.3 gallons of fuel per every 100 miles driven.
