Preliminary election results By JENNIFER AMATO Managing Editor

here were elections for seats on the municipal governing body and Board of Education in both North Brunswick and South Brunswick on Nov. 3. The results listed here reflect what has been posted online by the Middlesex County Clerk’s Office as of 4:26 p.m. Nov. 4. Mail-in ballots can be received through Nov. 10, and provisional ballots will be tabulated post-Nov. 11, according to the county. The results are not final and it is not known when the results will be final. The results of the election will remain unofficial until they are certified. • North Brunswick Township Council – Two terms are available on the Township Council. Incumbent Democrats Robert Davis and Claribel Cortes are running for three-year terms, uncontested. Davis received 8,493 votes, and Cortes received 8,505 votes. There were 136 write-in votes.

• North Brunswick Board of Education – The race for three, three-year seats is uncontested. Elesia L. James, longtime board member Richard Liguori and incumbent Hayley Toth were on the ballot. James received 6,825 votes. Toth received 5,223 votes. Liguori received 5,202 votes. There were 89 write-in votes. • South Brunswick Township Council – Incumbent Democrats Joseph Camarota, Archana (Ann) Grover and Jo Hochman are running against Republicans Mike Kushwarra, Brian William Wojaczyk and Antonia Kulberda for three, three-year terms. Camarota received 11,043 votes. Grover received 10,685 votes. Hochman received 10,613 votes. Wojaczyk received 4,103 votes. Kushwarra received 4,033 votes. Kulberda received 3,709 votes. There were nine write-in votes. • South Brunswick Board of Education – Raja Krishna, Mike Mitchell and Smitha Raj are competing against incumbents Arthur Robinson, Deven Patel

South Brunswick plan to begin hybrid school days remains unchanged By JENNIFER AMATO

he South Brunswick School District is moving ahead with its existing plan to begin hybrid instruction on Nov. 16. As part of the model, classes will begin at 7:30 a.m. and end at 1:55 p.m., making the class blocks a total of 80 minutes. In response to this change, Sourav Patra created a petition because students will be in front of their computers for a minimum of 320 minutes per day, plus an additional 40 minutes, according to the new schedule.

“[A]nd that’s not even including the amount of time it takes to do our homework,” Patra said in the petition, posted on Change.org. “Pediatricians and even the American Health Association have both made statements regarding the excessive use of screens before COVID-19, and considering the fact that we are using screens for almost everything, the health risks of staring at a screen for almost 8 hours a day are unbeknownst to doctors, and may have devastating developmental effects on students of all ages.” In addition, lunch time is reduced to 30 minutes a day from the previous 60 min-

utes. “I personally felt that it was a decision that will negatively impact our ability to learn during class. Those 60 minutes provided a time for students to rest their eyes, and their brains. Having students sit in one place for 70 minutes staring at a screen is already difficult enough as is, and reducing the amount of time they are able to separate their eyes from their screens would create even greater difficulty for the students to focus on the material they are being taught,” Patra wrote. Patra received more than 1,250 votes in support of the schedule change. However,

the original plan seemingly will stay as-is. On Oct. 30, Patra posted a reply on the petition’s site. “I’m sorry to say that according to [Superintendent] Scott Feder, there is simply nothing that can be done about the timing of school start times. While this is a sad defeat, I still strongly believe that screen time is still an issue that has yet to be addressed. The reduction of passing times and lunch times still has a negative impact on student body, and the problem is most likely going to be even more pronounced, (Continued on page 7)

n organization that advocates for the legalization of marijuana is asserting New Jersey voters approved a public question in the Nov. 3 election which calls for amending the state constitution to accommodate the adult use possession, production and sale of marijuana to individuals age 21 or older. “Adult use” marijuana is also referred to as “recreational use” marijuana. In a press release issued shortly after polls closed on Nov. 3, the National Organization for the Reform of Marijuana Laws (NORML) said Garden State voters had passed the question. The result of the election is not official, as additional mail-in ballots and provisional ballots remain to be counted. The result will not be official until it is certified and at this time it is not known when certification will occur.

NORML Executive Director Erik Altieri was quoted in the press release as saying, “Garden State voters spoke resoundingly. They are demanding their lawmakers end the failed policy of marijuana criminalization and instead pursue a more sensible path of regulation and legalization. “Law enforcement in New Jersey arrests more citizens each year for minor marijuana violations than almost any other state in the nation. “By moving to end this fiscally wasteful and morally repugnant policy, state officials will now be able to prioritize law enforcement resources toward combating more serious criminal activities, better respect the personal freedom and civil liberties of their citizens, end the racist application of marijuana prohibition laws against communities of color, and direct new tax revenues toward important social programs such as education and infrastructure

development,” Altieri said. Carly Wolf, NORML’s state policies coordinator, said, “Because the public question is a non-binding, legislatively referred ballot question, the New Jersey Legislature must now take immediate action to draft and implement enabling legislation in a manner that is in accordance with voters’ sentiments. “Their first priority should be bringing about an end to the tens of thousands of low-level marijuana possession arrests that occur each year in New Jersey. Once this is accomplished, they should then expeditiously move forward to meet voters’ second demand, which is to initiate regulations to license and oversee the commercial cannabis market in New Jersey,” Wolf said. In response to the apparent passage of the public question, State Sen. Nick Scutari (D-Middlesex, Somerset, Union) said, “What began as a mission to bring reform

to our criminal justice system and progress to New Jersey has finally become an inescapable reality for my colleagues in the Legislature. “Credit is due entirely to voters in this state who, after weighing the apprehension expressed by some politicians, courageously declared our society is ready for a regulated and safe cannabis industry in New Jersey. “As the prime sponsor of this legislation, it has been my honor to shepherd this effort through several administrations of five governors over 17 years. “Along with Gov. Phil Murphy, Senate President Stephen Sweeney and Assembly Speaker Craig Coughlin, I am ready to work with every member of the Legislature to take the necessary steps to realize the will of the people that was so overwhelmingly expressed on Nov. 3. This is a win for our communities of color, for fairness and for common sense,” Scutari said.

Officials announce New Jersey’s COVID-19 vaccination plan

Phil Murphy and New Jersey Health Commissioner Judith Persichilli have announced the state’s COVID-19 vaccination plan, which they said is designed to provide equitable access to approved vaccines, achieve maximum community protection and build public trust in advance of an approved vaccine “The strategic and efficient deployment of a vaccine will be critical to our continued fight against the COVID-19 pandemic and is a key tool in our recovery,” Murphy was quoted as saying in a press release. “While we will welcome one or more COVID-19 vaccines, we are not going to simply rush forward. We will be as methodical and deliberate in our approaches to a vaccination plan as we have been in every aspect of our responses over the past eight months,” the governor said. “The department’s vaccine plan is expected to evolve over time as more details about vaccine availability, timelines, distribution, funding resources and supplies are released,” Persichilli was quoted as saying in the press release.

“Our aspirational goal for a wide-scale vaccination program for New Jersey is to vaccinate 70% of the adult population in a six-month period. The department will follow the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) guidance on prioritization and further allocation decisions will be made through a health equity lens,” she said. New Jersey submitted its draft COVID-19 vaccination plan to the CDC on Oct. 16. The plan calls for an all-of-government approach to a wide-scale vaccination program, according to the press release. “To date, there is no globally approved COVID-19 vaccine. However, there is an expectation a vaccine will become available either by the end of the year or the first quarter of next year under an Emergency Use Authorization (EUA) pre-approval,” Persichilli said. An EUA allows the U.S. Food and Drug Administration to facilitate the availability of unapproved medical product to be used to prevent serious or life-

threatening diseases when there are no adequate, approved and available alternatives, according to the press release. The FDA may issue an emergency use authorization for one or more COVID-19 vaccines by the end of 2020 or the first quarter of 2021. Several vaccines are in Phase 3 clinical trials. Some of the vaccines will require a two-dose regimen, 21 to 28 days apart, according to the press release. The initial allotment of vaccine to states is expected to be limited. The Advisory Committee on Immunization Practices to the CDC has drafted recommendations for the first phase of the vaccination effort, prioritizing health care workers who have the potential for direct exposure and essential workers and individuals at risk, including those 65 and older. It will be up to states to determine the final allocation, according to the press release. The Department of Health has been working to ensure an equitable widescale vaccination program since July and

established the New Jersey Department of Heath COVID-19 Vaccine Task Force with nine teams. The task force is chaired by Dr. David Adinaro, deputy commissioner for public health services. “While this is a statewide coordinated plan, it will be implemented locally and so the task force is focused on working collaboratively with local and county health departments and numerous other partners in this process,” Adinaro said. “This effort will help ensure all voices are heard in developing and implementing this program.” Information about COVID-19 and the vaccines currently in development is still evolving and the Department of Health will continue to release information as it becomes available, according to the press release. The department’s COVID-19 vaccination plan has been partly informed by New Jersey’s experience with pandemic influenza vaccination during the 2009 H1N1 pandemic, according to the press release.

North Brunswick airman serving Daughter pleads for donations, prayers in South Korea found dead in dorm as father recovers from fiery crash

n airman at Osan Air Base in South Korea was found dead in his dormitory room on Nov. 2. Senior Airman Richard Samaroo, 21, of North Brunswick, was discovered in his dorm at about 12:25 p.m. Nov. 2, Osan said in a statement on its website. Samaroo was an electrical power production technician in the 51st Civil En-

gineer Squadron. He had been serving at Osan since May. “Our Mustang family mourns the loss of Richard,” Colonel John Gonzales, commander of the 51st Fighter Wing, said in the release. “Our deepest condolences go out to his family and friends.” Samaroo’s death remains under investigation.

He was hit head-on by a tractortrailer which resulted in his truck bursting

into flames with him inside. He is in critical condition and I don’t know how he is going to make it out. I’m praying and I’m asking for all of you who see this for your prayers as well,” she posted on her GoFundMe page. Local children’s musician ventures into another music genre By KATHY CHANG Staff Writer

anny Adlerman has spent 25 years as a children’s author, musician and an impresario. With a dozen books published and four released albums under his belt, Adlerman, 57, who has lived in Metuchen for close to 30 years, is venturing into another music genre while fulfilling a lifelong dream as he and his bandmates release their first album together, The BAR. The name of the album is the name of the band. Bandmates include Jim Babjak, founding member and lead guitarist of The Smithereens, a New Jersey staple for 40 years; and Kurt Reil, co-founder, drummer and singer for The Grip Weeds, hailing from Highland Park for almost as long. “Talk about a dream come true,” Adlerman said. “I’ve been writing rock and roll since high school and when I happened to have met up with Jim over 20 years ago at an evening school appearance, I couldn’t know it would lead to this, but it was worth the wait. I am so proud of the music on this album and truly feel it’s the best one I have been a part of to date.” The album is all originals featuring

songs either written or co-written by Adlerman. “Of course I’m thrilled to have some songs I wrote on my own featured,” he said. “But some of those co-writes are really special. Jim and Kurt each brought things to the table I never could have achieved on my own. A guy couldn’t be luckier to have such good friends like them to make music with.” Reil said “The BAR” came about in a very free and easy way. “We were recording children’s songs to accompany Danny’s books,” he said. “One night he came in with a set of lyrics and asked me to write music to them. After that, we just started recording. Jimmy has been my friend for a long time and he brought Danny to House of Vibes in the first place. They had already teamed up on some children’s music which I had engineered.” Babjack joked Adlerman “bought me off with pizza so I would write and record some songs with him. Springpoint residents give high marks for pandemic response

n a recent independent survey, residents of Springpoint Senior Living gave their communities high marks for the response to the COVID-19 health crisis, with an overall ranking of 4.72 out of 5. Holleran, a nationally recognized research and consulting firm that specializes in the senior living industry, conducted the survey of 1,204 Springpoint independent living residents between Aug. 17 and Sept. 4, 2020. The communities scored extremely well for overall communications, comfort provided by the staff, and resident confidence in the community’s ability to manage a future pandemic, according to information provided by Springpoint. Based in Wall Township, Springpoint is a nationally recognized aging services provider that operates eight full service continuing care retirement communities that were part of the Holleran survey, including: The Atrium at Navesink Harbor in Red Bank; Crestwood Manor in Whiting; Meadow Lakes in East Windsor; Monroe Village in Monroe Township; The Moorings at Lewes in Lewes, Delaware; The Oaks at Denville in Denville; Stonebridge at Montgomery in Skillman; and Winchester Gardens in Maplewood.

“These survey results are an affirmation of what we already knew – that our communities have done an outstanding job during the pandemic,” Anthony A. Argondizza, president and CEO of Springpoint, said in the statement. “Over the past eight months, we’ve received an outpouring of appreciation and support from our residents and families on how well we’ve managed through this unprecedented time. Our ‘Springpoint Heroes’ truly are the shining stars.” From the beginning, Springpoint and its communities took a very aggressive approach to fighting the pandemic, with the safety and well-being of its residents and staff members as the top priority, according to the statement. The Springpoint response has been guided by healthcare professionals and medical directors, in compliance with mandates from the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS), Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), as well as the state and local Departments of Health. Since March, the following safety measures have been in place to assure safe and healthy Springpoint communities, according to the statement: Team members

complete daily wellness checks, including having their temperature taken. Sick employees are not allowed to work. All guests must complete a wellness screening questionnaire and have their temperature taken prior to their visit. All communities are cleaned regularly and high-touch areas are disinfected with greater frequency. Hand sanitizer is available throughout the communities for guests and employees. All employees and visitors are required to wear a face a covering and maintain proper social distancing. Springpoint communities also placed a strong emphasis on the prevention of social isolation by making sure that residents stayed connected with staff members, families and one another in many different ways, according to the statement. During the stay-at-home restrictions, the in-house TV channels in Springpoint communities provided updates from the senior leadership team to keep residents informed. The channel also provides daily exercise classes, brain fitness, trivia, concerts, movies, lectures and religious ceremonies for residents to view in the comfort and safety of their homes.
