South Brunswick will move forward with energy plan By JENNIFER AMATO

North Brunswick Wreaths Across America members participated in the Bells of Peace nationally on Nov. 11 by tolling the bell 21 times at 11 a.m. in Elmwood Cemetery, North Brunswick, in honor and remembrance of all who served and sacrificed their lives in World War I. Sponsored by the Doughboy Foundation. plan. Officials discussed moving toward clean, renewable energy during the Nov. 10 Township Council meeting. “It’s a popular and successful strategy to combatting the climate crisis,” Charles Kratovil, representing Food & Water Watch, said during the virtual meeting. “It will make South Brunswick a leader when it comes to clean energy and clean air.” The council discussed choosing the option of a government private energy program that auto-enrolls residents (but who can opt out) and allows for non-residents to opt in. It would also put the onus on local distribution companies, such as JCP&L and PSE&G, to notice its customers. The township would be responsible for reimbursing the companies for the incremental costs, but Director of Law Don Sears said he did not know the cost. If approved, the township would move into public bidding, award the bid, transmit a copy of the agreement to the Board of Public Utilities and the ratepayer advocate, notice residents, and then give a list of customers to the service providers, Sears said. New Brunswick has had the program in place for years, and East Brunswick voters presumably approved the measure during the Nov. 3 general election as a ballot question. Plainsboro and Edison slightly modified the template ordinance, but are enrolled in the program. Glen Rock has 70% participation from its residents. The council will have to designate township staff and structure the program so that the supplier is given a schedule for incremental increases through 2030, moving toward 100% renewable energy. “It seems like an exciting project, just takes a little bit to get it up and running,” Sears said. Since the council decided to move forward, Sears will work on creating an ordinance.

very year, the South Brunswick Senior Center holds a large celebration for local heroes for Veterans Day, but this year was quite different. Partnering with the South Brunswick Police Department and the South Brunswick Transportation Department, staff visited nine veterans on Nov. 11 and brought a small parade including sirens, balloons, gifts and the blasting of “Reveille” as they approached their homes. Veterans included Jimmy Chin, Robert Garr, Rod Holliday, Richard Jackson, Carmelo Marrero, Buddy Thomas, Phil Weinstein and Gary Harriman. Arranging this visit was social worker Dawn Neglia, assisted by Darlene Dawson, Jasmine Aynilian, JillAnn Foxxe, Miritza Reyes and Caryl Greenberg. Though the senior center’s doors are closed, the staff is available daily from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. weekdays, providing virtual and telephone programs, services and resources.

Community supports hurricane relief efforts in Central America

I

n a particularly violent Atlantic hurricane season, Central America has had more than its share of devastating wind and rain. The problem is, the end is not in sight. After Hurricane Eta brought death and destruction to nations including Nicaragua, Honduras, Guatemala, and Belize last week, Tropical Storm Iota – the 30th named storm this year – was predicted to become a hurricane as of press time. And the citizens of Central America must again brace for the worst. With many having roots and relatives in the hurricane affected nations, North Brunswick’s greater Latinx community has banded together to collect essential supplies of men’s and women’s clothing, food, water, diapers and toiletries. The Township of North Brunswick, through the police department’s PBA Local 160, along with the Puerto Rican Action Board (PRAB), Latino Action Network and National Coalition of Latino Officers, assembled collection points Nov. 14 and 15 with the hope of shipping supplies to Honduras as early as Nov. 16. North Brunswick Mayor Francis “Mac” Womack, who is also a PRAB board member, acknowledged that public service is

not a “9 to 5” proposition. “I am so proud of our police department – especially Officer Fedor Salvador [Romero] and North Brunswick community leadership at this hour. Many that have gathered on a weekend have so much that they are doing right here at home financially and through grocery donations to care for those affected by COVID-19. To take on the additional effort of assisting those abroad speaks volumes of the township’s commitment to serve.” Cuqui Rivera, a community organizer and member of PRAB, offered her thanks

This is about North America, Central America and South America. The key word is ‘America.’ We all come together in times of need and support one another.” For ways on how to assist in Central American relief efforts, email Womack at mayorwomack@northbrunswicknj.gov. • This article was submitted by Burton Trent Public Affairs

School board members seek to maintain trust, deal with effects of COVID-19

By JENNIFER AMATO

Managing Editor

NORTH BRUNSWICK – The North Brunswick Township Board of Education will welcome a new face once votes are officially tallied and board members are sworn in. Newcomer Elesia L. James received the highest number of votes in the Nov. 3 general election, with 10,160; Hayley Toth received 7,477; and Richard D. Liguori received 7,400 as of 9:17 p.m. Nov. 18, which was current as of press time. There were 289 write-in votes. Results are not official until they have been certified by Middlesex County. James said she is “truly grateful, honored and humbled by the current status” of the results of the election. “While we await the certified results, I am hopeful that I will, ultimately, be elected to the Board of Education with my term commencing in January. “I have received so much support from friends, family and community members and I feel energized to make them proud by serving with dignity, integrity and with the community in mind. “While I cannot claim to know all of the answers to the questions that exist or even to know what problems may currently exist, I trust that I will soon become informed and I will do my best to ensure that North Brunswick Township Public Schools is responsive to community concerns and that the district is well run,” James said. James said she looks forward to building and maintaining public trust upon being certified and subsequently sworn in. “Of great importance right now is dealing with the impact of COVID-19 and reconciling, to the greatest extent practicable, how it may have affected our students socially, emotionally and academically. “Moving forward, I am eager to collaborate with my fellow board members, the superintendent of schools, district leadership, staff and the community on determining what our collective goals are to ensure the educational welfare of our students and to develop policies, as needed, to carry out the district’s goals and endeavors,” she said. Toth had replaced Claribel Cortes, who joined the Township Council earlier this year after Councilman Robert Corbin passed away. Cortes was presumably reelected to the council on Nov. 3. “As I await the certified results, I reflect back over the last couple of weeks and feel a sense of gratitude. I want to thank the community members who put their trust in me by casting their vote for my continued service to the Board of Education. I am pleased with the community’s response to

a fair and presumed successful election,” Toth said. “The children of North Brunswick will remain my No. 1 priority, ensuring over the next three years our students receive high quality education in a safe and secure environment. I will focus to increase our Four Year Cohort Graduation Rate ensuring programs and a steady curriculum for every student. “The COVID-19 crisis still looms, but my goal is to make sure we get all of our students back to a ‘normal’ learning environment. I will also make it my priority that we inform all members of the community of the happenings within the North Brunswick school system. “Our taxpayers deserve the most information as possible as it pertains to our district. We are all facing an unprecedented time in our lives; we must lean on one another, come together for our children. I am humbled, filled with gratitude, and look forward to serving the community,” Toth said. Liguori was a member of the Board of Education from 2007-15, and returned in 2018. He served as president for five years and as vice president for one year. “Thank you to the voters of our wonderful township for supporting me in this year’s campaign. I am humbled by your support and, although we must wait for the election results to be certified by the county clerk’s office, I cannot wait to get started on my next term,” Liguori said. “I also want to congratulate Elesia James and Hayley Toth on winning their first full terms. They are both energetic and bright people, and I look forward to sitting alongside both of them as we all work together to maintain and improve upon the standard of excellence that you have come to expect from North Brunswick schools. “My goal for my next term is to continue to listen, learn and advocate for all students in town. Student achievement remains the first priority and I will work collaboratively with our administrative team and my fellow board members to ensure we do so in a fiscally responsible manner. “We have important work to do, all while navigating important issues such as the COVID-19 pandemic, enhancing rigorous digital curriculum, ongoing construction in our facilities, eliminating the achievement gap, and fighting for fair funding from Trenton. “North Brunswick is the only place I have ever called home. I care deeply about our town and I look forward to working with all stakeholders in the upcoming months and years as we embark on the new and exciting challenges ahead,” Liguori said.

Democrats presumably maintain control in South Brunswick By JENNIFER AMATO Managing Editor

SOUTH BRUNSWICK – The governing body in South Brunswick will presumably remain fully Democratic. Incumbents Joseph Camarota, Archana “Ann” Grover and Josephine Hochman presumably retained their seats on the Township Council during the Nov. 3 election. According to results posted by Middlesex County, as of 9:17 p.m. Nov. 18, which was current as of press time, Camarota received 14,962 votes, Grover received 14,400 votes and Hochman received 14,326 votes. Three Republican candidates ran against the incumbents. Brian William Wojaczyk received 6,676 votes. Mike Kushwarra received 6,569 votes. Antonia Kulberda received 6,041 votes. There were 52 write-in votes. Election results are not official until they have been certified by the county, which was expected around Nov. 23. Camarota said the 2020 coronavirus pandemic had a “tremendous impact” on the campaign. “Quite frankly, the typical two- to three-month (September-November) cam-

paign season never materialized this year. Just about every community function was canceled, door-to-door campaigning did not make sense due to health concerns, and all debates/meet the candidates events were called off. “Realistically, the coronavirus created a scenario throughout the United States wherein challengers were at a disadvantage by not being able to effectively campaign and incumbents had to run almost solely on their record – which is why it is so humbling and quite surprising to see the vote totals that Ann, Jo and myself achieved this year. It is such an honor and privilege to serve and represent the people of South Brunswick,” he said. Over the next four years, Camarota said, he and his fellow council members want to continue to serve members of the public by listening and responding to their needs. “We need to remain fiscally responsible while trying to maintain, if not improve, our current level of services. For now, our most paramount concern, especially in light of the continuing pandemic, is the health, safety and welfare of every person in our community,” he said. The other candidates could not be reached by press time.

Thank you for your mercy towards me and mine. + Say this prayer 3 consecutive days and publish prayer after petition is granted. Do not despair. Additional advice and petition. Pray the Rosary regularly. F.A.M.
