trio of newcomers has been elected to the South Brunswick Board of Education. Raja Krishna, Mike Mitchell and Smitha Raj defeated incumbents Arthur Robinson, Deven Patel and Patrick Del Piano for three, three-year seats. The vote tallies were certified on Nov. 20 by the Middlesex County Clerk’s Office. Krishna received 9,678 votes. Mitchell received 9,414 votes. Raj received 7,593 votes. Robinson received 7,026 votes. Patel received 7,016 votes. Del Piano received 6,756 votes. There were 195 write-in votes. Mitchell, who ran an unsuccessful campaign in 2018, said he was pleased this time around. “The constituency I have gained over

that short period of time is truly amazing. I had a solid base of supporters then, but I have gained so many supporters from the community who care deeply about public education as I do. “I am most satisfied with the results this time around because I made it. I was not concerned about what position I finished in as long as I had the opportunity. The fact that I made it this time around demonstrates the community’s trust in my ability to execute the duties of a board member,” he said. Mitchell would like the board to focus on becoming a more unified group while supporting the district through truly unprecedented times. “I would certainly like to thank my teammates, Major Raja Krishna and Dr. Smitha Raj, for this opportunity to work together towards our goals. We had no way of knowing how this would end, but certainly enjoyed our time campaigning and

ov. Phil Murphy signed legislation (A1649) which protects the home addresses and telephone numbers of judges, prosecutors and law enforcement officers from public disclosure. The bill, known as “Daniel’s Law,” is named in honor of Daniel Anderl, the late son of U.S. District Court Judge Esther Salas. Anderl fell victim to a senseless act of gun violence committed by an individual who had compiled a dossier of personal information about Salas, including the judge’s home address, according to information provided by the governor’s office. “This is a renewed commitment to ensure our judiciary, prosecutors and members of law enforcement who answer the call of justice can do so without fear for their personal safety, or that of their loved ones,” Murphy said in a statement on Nov. 20. “By shielding the home addresses and private contact information for those who serve on the bench and enforce our laws, we are demonstrating that in the face of unspeakable tragedy, New Jersey responds

not with thoughts and prayers, but with concrete action.” “My husband, Mark, and I would like to thank Gov. Murphy and all the men and women of the New Jersey State Legislature for enacting this trailblazing legislation,” Salas said in the statement. “We hope this law can be a steppingstone to improving the security of my sisters and brothers who serve as federal judges throughout the country. Nobody should be forced to endure the kind of pain my family has experienced ever again. Together we can work to ensure that all members of the judiciary (federal, state and municipal courts) can perform their duties without fear of retribution or harm. Daniel used to say, ‘Mom, I love talking with you.’ I know Daniel is listening now, and he is smiling down on us today because he knows that with this bill signing, we are doing our part to ensure that his death will not be in vain.” The bill amends the Open Public Records Act (OPRA) to exclude from the definition of a government (i.e., public)

record the portion of any document which discloses the home address of any active or retired judge, prosecutor or law enforcement officer, according to the statement. Further, the bill prohibits government agencies, individuals and businesses from knowingly publishing on the internet, or otherwise making available, the home address or unpublished home telephone number of any active or retired judge or any active or retired prosecutor, according to the statement. The bill also enables any active or retired judge, prosecutor or law enforcement officer whose home address or unpublished telephone number is disclosed on the internet or otherwise made available to the public, or whose immediate family member’s name, home address, or unpublished phone number is disclosed on the internet or otherwise made available to the public, to request that the information be removed. The government agency, individual or business would be required to remove the information within 72 hours of

receiving such a request in writing, according to the statement. “Daniel Anderl’s tragic death reminds us that the disclosure of personal information can leave judges and family members vulnerable to threats and violence,” Chief Justice Stuart Rabner said in the statement. “We are grateful to the governor and the Legislature for taking this important step to provide common sense protections for active and retired judges and their families, along with others in the justice system, in the hope that a future tragedy can be prevented.” “Judges, prosecutors and law enforcement officers all play vital roles in keeping the public safe, but in doing so, they often jeopardize their own safety, becoming targets of vengeful criminals or litigants,” Attorney General Gurbir S. Grewal said in the statement. “We need to protect them as they protect all of us. This commonsense law will go a long way to ensure the privacy and security of these public servants (Continued on page 16)

Princeton resident reunites with fellow Mouseketeers to record holiday album REGIONAL INTEREST By JENNIFER AMATO Managing Editor

O

ne of “The All-New Mickey Mouse Club” cast members from the 1990s has reunited with her fellow Mouseketeers to record a special holiday album. “Why? Because It’s Christmas” features Princeton resident Lindsey Alley, along with 17 ‘Teers who recorded 15 holiday classics. The Disney stars from all seven seasons reunited 30 years later. Recorded during the height of the 2020 coronavirus pandemic, the album will be released on Nov. 27. The group is donating a portion of the gross proceeds to two organizations that support those extremely affected by COVID-19. MusiCares provides critical assistance to members of the music community in times of need. The Brave of Heart Fund provides much needed financial support to the families of frontline healthcare workers and volunteers who lost their lives due to COVID-19. “Music has such a unique ability to heal and unify us, and we are so grateful for our position to continue to support music creators and professionals in these uncertain times. The direct impact we have been able to make on our music community during the pandemic would not be possible without the generosity of partners like Always In The Club,” said Laura Segura, executive director of MusiCares, in the statement. “We are grateful to Always in the Club for its efforts to raise awareness for the Brave of Heart Fund,” Holly Welch Stubbing, president and CEO of E4E Relief, said in the statement. “Contributions like this one will allow the fund to support even more families of fallen healthcare workers during the COVID-19 pandemic as they navigate their unimaginable losses.” Aside from Alley, the singers are Rhona Bennett, Deedee Magno Hall, Tony Lucca, Nikki DeLoach, Dale Godboldo, Chasen Hampton, Tasha Danner, David Kater, Jason “Blain” Carson, Jennifer McGill, Mylin Brooks-Stoddard, Raquel “Roque” Herring, Nita Young, Jason Minor, TJ Fantini and Marc Worden. Alley moved to Princeton in the summer of 2019 with her husband and young son; they had moved to Brooklyn, N.Y., from Los Angeles the year prior, and after

Seventeen former Mouseketeers recorded “Why? Because It’s Christmas.”

living in a basement apartment for nearly a year, decided they needed a bit more space, she said in an interview with Newspaper Media Group/Packet Media LLC. “We looked at a lot of towns in New Jersey and New York, but Princeton just felt ‘right’ to us. And we also found the perfect house, so it all made sense. We hadn’t been here too long before COVID hit, but it still gave us plenty of time to find our favorite spots and meet some great new friends.

“We love our walks along the D&R Canal, in Palmer Square and through the Princeton University campus. We have spent a lot of time playing at Marquand Park. And nothing beats a meal at Mistral or Mediterra, followed by a scoop from the Bent Spoon,” she said. Alley said she watched a lot of movie musicals as a child and remembers saying to her mother, “I can do that,” she recalled. “She took me to an audition for ‘The Sound of Music’ at a dinner theater in my hometown of Lakeland, Fla. I landed the role of Gretl and I have been working in the theater ever since,” she said. Reflecting on her days as a Mouseketeer, she said, “doing what I loved to do with such wonderfully talented people was pure joy. And there’s just no way of paying for that kind of learning experience, you know?” Alley has starred on stage in “First Wives Club, the Musical,” and in TV shows, movies and theatrical productions. She has had roles in “How I Met Your Mother,” “Lethal Weapon” and her critically acclaimed one-woman show, “Blood, Sweat & Mouseketears!” on Broadway. “Choosing a favorite project is impossible. Every project I have been involved in has been a gift in one way or another. Don’t get me wrong, I’ve done some bad shows. But I would classify those as learning experiences. “If I had to play favorites, I would say

‘The Mickey Mouse Club’ has had the most profound impact on my life. Learning to river dance for a role in ‘Legally Blonde’ was the hardest thing I have ever done. And doing my one-woman show, ‘Blood, Sweat and Mouseketeers’ is the most cathartic ongoing process,” she said. Alley is currently working on a new club act/one-woman show called “After Ever After.” “It’s mostly about being a mom. About marriage and family and friends. Juggling real life with my show business hopes and dreams. I obviously need a better elevator pitch, but that, too, is a work in progress. I’m hoping to bring something to a local stage when it is safe to be back indoors,” she said. That being said, COVID definitely affected the recording process of “Why? Because It’s Christmas.” “The process was pretty hilarious. I had never recorded anything from home before, so there was a lot of trial and error. Lots of starts and stops. I started recording in a refrigerator box (that we saved for our son’s playroom) in the basement. But my vocals were ultimately drowned out by a family of very loud crickets. “I moved my setup upstairs to a small closet and everything seemed to be going well until one of our producers asked to see my ‘studio’ via FaceTime. “I gave him a quick tour and he confirmed my sound was still off, as I had been singing into the back of the microphone. Whoops. “We got there in the end, but it was definitely a process! I’m actually so grateful to have gone through everything, as I now feel like I could record my own little album from the hall closet,” she said. Calling her fellow Mouseketeers “some of my most favorite people on the planet,” Alley said they all picked up where they left off. “To be a part of a project like this with them … during a global pandemic, and for three great charities, gave me all the feels including joy, hope and pride, to name a few. Creating this album together, yet apart, was an honor and a privilege,” she said. She was also delighted to record a Christmas album. “Christmas is my favorite time of year. If I could start decorating in September without the neighbors raising an eyebrow, I would. (Continued on page 10)

LETTERS Thanksgiving cheer at the ISCJ Food Pantry

O

n Saturday, Nov. 21, the Islamic Society of Central Jersey (ISCJ) held its weekly Drive-Thru Food Pantry event, but on this particular Saturday, it was about providing extra holiday cheer. The pantry provided turkeys, chicken, canned vegetables, mashed potatoes, rice, noodles, bread, milk and other food items. Approximately 150 turkeys, boxes full of food, and a note with “Happy Thanksgiving” wishes were given out. The ISCJ wants to thank the community for their support and donations for this worthy cause. Some individuals that came by to pick up turkeys and food boxes mentioned that since the pandemic they have been unemployed, or their work hours have been reduced and they have been unable to pay their bills. Everyone was very thankful for the local masjid’s efforts. There were many volunteers from our community, both young and old, that

worked together as a team to help prepare the boxes and pack them in the cars of anyone who needed them. The ISCJ has been distributing food on Saturdays from noon to 2 p.m. since May, and has given out hundreds of packed boxes weekly. They plan to continue the ISCJ Food Pantry as long as there’s a need. Since we are all going through this pandemic together, now is the best time to help people because we have to unite to get through these tough times. We are very fortunate to work with township partners such as the South Brunswick Food Pantry and South Brunswick police on this initiative. If there is anyone who needs help from the ISCJ food pantry, contact us at foodpantry@iscj.org

Libraries hold valued center of community

C

ongratulations to three libraries in the16th Legislative District – the Hunterdon County Library in Flemington, the Montgomery Township Library Branch of the Somerset County Library System, and the South Brunswick Township Public Library in Middlesex County – for being among the 38 highly rated projects from 16 counties that have been awarded funding from the Library Construction Bond Act (LCBA). The specific awards are: Hunterdon, $980,837; Montgomery, $5,375,000; South Brunswick, $3,586,852. On Nov. 16, the members of the NJ State Legislature unanimously passed legislation to appropriate $86.5 million from the library construction bond issue that voters approved three years ago. Gov. Phil Murphy is expected to sign the legislation into law immediately. Funding will become available soon afterwards for the projects encompassing construction, reconstruction, development, extension, improvement, and furnishing of New Jersey’s public libraries. A second round of awards is planned for the first quarter of 2021. Libraries occupy such a valued and important center of community life in towns throughout New Jersey. They serve as the community’s living room where people gather to connect with their friends and neighbors and to broaden their horizons from all of the library’s information resources, as well as the talented and welcoming library staff. I am continually impressed with the

juxtaposition of high tech information services with the familial personal environment. In addition, the libraries have been creatively responsive in finding ways to serve the community during these COVID-challenging times with strategies such as curbside pickup, extensive virtual programming, outside story readings and special browse-and-go visits. My heartfelt thanks to all the library directors and staff who work so intelligently, creatively, compassionately and energetically to improve the quality of life for all of us. Saint Peter’s University Hospital receives sixth nursing designation

S

aint Peter’s University Hospital has been redesignated as a Magnet hospital by the American Nurses Credentialing Center of the American Nurses Association for 2020-24, making Saint Peter’s one of only five hospitals worldwide to receive this designation for six consecutive terms. Magnet recognition is the highest honor for nursing service excellence that any hospital can receive. Saint Peter’s was the 10th hospital in the nation to first receive Magnet designation in 1998, according to information provided by the hospital. This recent designation was awarded after a three-day virtual survey completed in mid-September. The Magnet Recognition Program designates organizations worldwide where nursing leaders successfully align their nursing strategic goals to improve the organization’s patient outcomes. Magnet status is awarded to hospitals that deliver an extraordinary level of patient care, meet high levels of nursing excellence, establish an environment that encourages the pursuit of professional development and an emphasis on teamwork. To nurses, Magnet Recognition means education and development through every career stage, which leads to greater autonomy at the bedside, according to the statement. “The nurses at Saint Peter’s are among the best in the nation. To be recognized with this prestigious honor that only five hospitals worldwide can claim is truly an honor

for our nurses and our nursing leadership,” Leslie (Les) D. Hirsch, FACHE, president and chief executive officer of Saint Peter’s Healthcare System, said in the statement. “Our redesignation confirms the clinical excellence that is integral to patient care at Saint Peter’s. It is especially meaningful in these challenging times. The Magnet survey appraisers noted several key areas where the value of our nursing teamwork was exemplary.” Magnet-recognized organizations are expected to uphold five key principles that support global issues in nursing and healthcare. These include: Transformational Leadership, Structural Empowerment, Exemplary Professional Practice, New Knowledge, Innovation and Improvements and Empirical Quality Results. “Compassionate care complemented by the highest skill level is what truly sets us apart from other hospitals,” Linda Carroll, MSN, RN-BC, vice president of Patient Care Services and chief nursing officer at Saint Peter’s University Hospital, said in the statement. “While the COVID-19 crisis put us all to the test, I’m proud to say that our nursing team has always been comprised of outstanding individuals that deliver extraordinary care based on an interdisciplinary approach to quality and patient safety. Our philosophy of care is based on the five Cs of nursing – calling, caring, culture, commitment and collaboration, and each of these is reflected in the level of care provided at Saint Peter’s each day.”

North Brunswick joins MCIA recycling program; shared service saves tax dollars

N

orth Brunswick is the 17th municipality to join the Middlesex County Improvement Authority’s (MCIA) curbside recycling program. Confronted with a challenging and complex recycling marketplace, the township was facing recycling costs potentially doubling or more as has happened in many municipalities around the state, according to a statement released by the Middlesex County Office of Communications. “Recycling is our environmental and social responsibility to ensure that we are safeguarding our future on this planet,” Freeholder Director Ronald G. Rios said in the statement. “Scaling our current recycling program provides not only the most seamless process but also crucial tax savings for our residents while helping to become a more sustainable county – this is a win on all fronts.” North Brunswick Mayor Francis Womack expressed his gratitude to the county, stating “Shared services are vital to municipalities as we try to deliver qual-

ity services while protecting our taxpayers. North Brunswick is thankful to have the opportunity to join with the MCIA in its efficient and cost-effective curbside recycling program.” Middlesex County is consistently rated the best for recycling in the State of New Jersey largely due to the MCIA’s shared recycling program, according to the statement. Ongoing education and awareness campaigns have been the driver for the program’s success. Clearly identifying items that can and cannot be recycled has enabled the MCIA to receive the benefit of a stable and lower cost of disposal, which many municipalities cannot obtain on their own. “During this uncertain recycling market, we are proud to offer our towns fiscal stability while making sure residents continue to recycle wisely,” MCIA Executive Director H. James Polos said in the statement. It was not known what the cost savings would be, as of press time.

iddlesex County College (MCC) won three awards in the annual Hermes Creative Awards Program, administered and judged by the Association of Marketing and Communications Professionals. The college’s online open house, which included 18 videos and other material and was housed on the MCC website, was presented an honorable mention. The open house, which launched on May 20 and is still active, allowed prospective students and their parents to get a taste of MCC without stepping on campus. The videos were created by Nick Gula of Edison, Media Services manager; and members of his staff. The website was created by Aldrick del Rosario of Parsippany, web developer; and Joselyn Quezada of North Brunswick, marketing and new media manager, according to information provided by MCC. The college’s 2018-19 annual report garnered the Platinum trophy, the highest award in the Hermes contest, according to the statement This publication serves as

interacting with the community when it was safe. “Finally, last but certainly not least, I want to thank each resident for exercising your right to vote and selecting me to serve our community for the next three years. It is indeed a blessing and an honor for me. “Remember that regardless of what we’ve been through we still have plenty to be thankful for,” Mitchell said. Raj said she is overwhelmed by the community support. “The campaign season was very challenging due to the pandemic. There were not many avenues where we could put ourselves in front of the voters. “My favorite Christmas songs of all time are Nat King Cole’s ‘The Christmas Song,’ Bing Crosby’s ‘I’ll Be Home Christmas’ and Judy Garland’s ‘Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas.’ “When I hear those folks singing those songs, all is right in the world. And when

ties to reach out to voters in person were very far and few in between. Thankfully we were backed by a group of passionate volunteers who gave it their all to reach out to their friends, families and neighbors,” she said. She said her hope is that the board focuses on ensuring the delivery of high quality education, remote or otherwise, with the safety of the larger South Brunswick community in mind. “I want to express my heartfelt gratitude to our large hearted South Brunswick community. Now that the election is behind us, it is time to get to work. Together we can make a difference,” she said. Robinson thanked the community for the opportunity to serve as a South Brunswick Board of Education member for the past 12 years.

“I am looking forward to continuing my passion for public service by recruiting and aiding candidates to run for local and state public offices,” he said. “I will remember fondly the holiday concerts performed by our kids. And that I got a chance to serve as a member of the board during popular and unpopular times, thus ensuring that the education of our kids was always first and not second to none.” He said he was pleased with the voter turnout in this year’s election. “I felt that this campaign season was quite unique since the COVID-19 pandemic got campaigns to think out of the box instead of the traditional door-to-door campaigning, debates, and get-out-thevote activities. However, in the future, I do believe that the casting of ballots will include a robust vote-by-mail. Emphasiz-

ing that the governor’s Executive Order to send out ballots to every registered voter in the state was great. Therefore, I believe that future voting will not be just at the polls and requesting absentee ballots. As a result of the governor’s Executive Order, voters exercising their right to vote was at an all-time high in comparison to past presidential elections in the state,” he said. He said the COVID-19 pandemic will keep the Board “on its toes” with many challenges ahead. “I strongly believe that a safe and healthy community is paramount for a quality, safe and healthy learning environment in the classroom,” he said. The other candidates could not be reached for comment by press time.

I have had a hard day, I immediately go to my Pandora Christmas station for a fix. Christmas music is a balm for challenging times,” she said. Alley’s Christmas memories include her dad risking his life to hang a giant star on the chimney, singing “Silent Night” at Christmas Eve church and her mom’s shoepeg corn casserole. “Christmas is my favorite. And while this year is going to be hard being away

from our families, my husband and I are going to try to start some new traditions with our 3-year old son. Like decorating a bit too early. “We are trying not to focus on all the things that are missing, but rather on all we have right here and right now. Because if 2020 has taught us anything, it’s that every single day counts,” she said. “Why? Because It’s Christmas” will be released by Always In The Club/M12/

Universal and is available for pre-order at www.MMCHolidays.com. The album will be available as a commemorative holiday CD and as a digital download. The 17 ‘Teers will come together digitally for a virtual record release party that same day, which will be streamed live on M12.tv. Contact Jennifer Amato at jamato@newspapermediagroup.com

and their families.” “To everyone who played a role in getting this done, I thank you. However, our work does not end here. We must extend these privacy protections nationwide, so that no one lives through what Judge Salas and her husband lived through,” U.S. Senator Bob Menendez said in the statement. “We are living in a time of endless vitriol, rising hate crimes and increased personal attacks. And while we may not be able to eliminate hatred from someone’s heart, we can take action to better protect the men and women of our federal bench. That’s why I am proud to see Gov. Murphy sign Daniel’s Law here in New Jersey – and why I remain committed to the passage of the Daniel Anderl Judicial Security and Privacy Act in Washington.” Anderl, 20, was killed at his family’s North Brunswick home on July 19. Salas’ husband, Mark Anderl, who is a criminal defense attorney, was seriously injured in the attack carried out by suspect Roy Den Hollander, who allegedly targeted the family because of his disdain for Salas and her role as a federal judge, according to reports. Salas sits on the bench in the District of New Jersey, Newark.

“No person who takes on the responsibility of serving as a federal judge should ever have to live in fear that they or their family could be targeted by someone who is able to easily access their personal information,” U.S. Senator Cory Booker said in the statement. “Judge Salas and her husband, Mark, have gone through something that no parent should ever have to endure. I am grateful for the leadership of Gov. Murphy, Senator [Joe] Cryan, and Assemblywoman [Annette] Quijano as we honor the memory of Daniel with a commitment that this should never happen again.” Primary sponsors of A1649 include Assemblymembers Annette Quijano, Yvonne Lopez, Craig Coughlin and Ralph Caputo; and Senators Joe Cryan, Nicholas Scutari, Nellie Pou and Bob Smith. “Making tough decisions is part of the job for judges and prosecutors. Sometimes these decisions aren’t popular, and they become a target. It’s frightening to think that disgruntled individuals may be able to find their home addresses and personal phone numbers readily available at the touch of a button,” Quijano, Lopez, Coughlin and Caputo said in a joint statement. “Our hearts continue to break for Judge Salas and her family. The goal of this bill is to better protect the privacy of judges and prosecutors by prohibiting their personal addresses and contact information from being shared online without their consent.” “This law will honor the legacy of Dan-

iel Anderl and respect the loving memories of his family,” Cryan, a former Union County Sheriff who oversaw courthouse security in Union County, said in the statement. “This was a tragic act of violence targeted at a respected judge and her family because the gunman was able to locate their home address. It was also an attack on the justice system that was felt by everyone who serves or has served in law enforcement. They devote their lives to the safety of the public – they should be kept safe as well.” “We must act to protect our public officials and their families from potential attacks,” Scutari, chairman of the Senate Judiciary Committee, said in the statement. “The targeting of Judge Salas at her private residence by a gunman, resulting in the tragic death of her son and the serious wounding of her husband, underscores the need for us to do more to protect our judges and their families. Domestic terrorism is a very real threat in today’s society. Not long ago, a gunman attempted to take the life of then-Congresswoman Gabby Giffords, another gunman opened fire at a congressional softball game and, most recently, there was the foiled plot to kidnap and murder the governor of Michigan. This is a vital first step in ensuring the safety of our public officials in New Jersey.” “Judges and other court officers who serve our legal system deserve to be protected from any possible attack or retalia-

tion for merely performing their sworn duties. What happened to Judge Esther Salas, and her family, and in particular the fatal shooting of her son, Daniel, in his own home, must never happen again,” Pou said in the statement. “This law, restricting access to home addresses of judges and others who work in our court system will add a needed layer of protection for these public servants.” “As a representative and resident from Middlesex County, I was shocked, heartbroken and angered by the home attack on Judge Salas and her family, which left her husband critically wounded and ended in the death of her son, Daniel,” Smith said in the statement. “The Salas family are among my constituents, so it is important for me that I am a part of any action we take in response to this horrific incident. We have to do more to protect our judges, prosecutors and law enforcement officers from violent retaliation, especially in a time when people are actually planning physical violence against civil servants.” “This measure takes the steps necessary to obscure details about judges that could put them and their families at risk,” Senator Robert Singer said in the statement. “There is so much information exchanged online, and a reckless post or an innocuous comment can, in the wrong hands, be dangerous. Enacting this law will help increase security for judges our legal system relies on.”
