Rutgers leading coronavirus therapeutic clinical trial
R
utgers is leading a clinical trial assessing the combination of nitazoxanide, ribavirin and hydroxychloroquine to treat people 21 or older who are infected with SARS-CoV-2 and are asymptomatic or mildly symptomatic. The trial is being conducted with Synavir Corporation, a global health company that works with academia, industry and government to develop combination treatments for new viral infections. The trial — called Triple Combination Antiviral Coronavirus Therapy (TriACT) — seeks to determine whether treating people who test positive for coronavirus but who do not have symptoms or have mild symptoms with this combination will
reduce the amount of virus and their chances of getting sick, according to information provided by Rutgers on Nov. 30. There are no proven treatments for COVID-19, but there is some evidence that medications used to treat other infections might also work against COVID-19, especially if they are used in combination. This three-drug combination has been shown in experimental studies to be highly effective in suppressing viral replication. Participants will be given the drug combination or a placebo. “Medications for outpatients with COVID-19 that shorten the duration of the illness, prevent the need for hospitalization and, perhaps most importantly, prevent
spread of the disease to others are a critical need that are currently missing in therapeutics,” principal investigator Jeffrey Carson, MD, a Provost at Rutgers Biomedical and Health Sciences and a Distinguished Professor of Medicine at Rutgers Robert Wood Johnson Medical School, said in the statement. The trial will assess the rate of decline in viral load in 70 people over 10 days and compare the proportion of participants who are asymptomatic and symptomatic at 10 days versus the time of onset; the frequency of the development of fever and other symptoms of COVID-19 in those (Continued on page 6)
lizabeth Green, LPN, has been named Regional Caregiver of the Year by Maxim Healthcare Group, a national provider of home healthcare, companion and behavioral care, healthcare staffing, and workforce solutions. The North Brunswick resident was recognized for her compassion and commitment to Anthony DeVergillo, a 27-year-old living with Duchenne muscular dystrophy (DMD), a genetic disorder characterized by progressive muscle degeneration and weakness, according to information provided by Maxim. Green was also a finalist for Maxim’s John “Doc” Langley National Caregiver of the Year Award, which was presented during a virtual ceremony on December 1. Green has been caring for DeVergillo for the last nine years and the two have formed a strong bond. He says she amazes him with not only her exceptional nursing skills, but her motivating attitude and enduring friendship, according to the statement. “Liz understands the physical, social, and emotional care I require even without me needing to tell her,” DeVergillo said in the statement. “I do not feel like a patient with her – I feel like a person who has attainable hopes and dreams not defined by my disease.” One story highlights the positive impact Green has had on DeVergillo. In 2014, she was assisting him while at community college. “I was very shy and not strong-willed enough to truly advocate for my needs,” he said in the statement. DeVergillo asked Green to speak to the front desk on his behalf and ask for directions to his classroom. “Her response to me was, ‘I think you should ask them yourself.’” That one simple statement was a turning point for DeVergillo; it gave him the courage to speak for himself and helped him to avoid complacency, according to the statement. “From that day on, I slowly but surely began to come out of my shell and my (Continued on page 6)

T
he Middlesex County Food Organization and Outreach Distribution Services (MCFOODS) received a donation of 1,500 Thanksgiving turkeys that were distributed to two dozen partner agencies throughout the county. The turkeys were delivered to MCFOODS’ distribution center on Kennedy Boulevard in East Brunswick on Nov. 19 by the Community FoodBank of New Jersey, who received the turkeys via Stop & Shop’s Turkey Express program. “In a year when food insecurity has increased sharply throughout the state and the rate of food insecurity among children has nearly doubled in Middlesex County, we are incredibly grateful for this donation,” Freeholder Director Ronald G. Rios said in a statement provided by the Middlesex County Office of Communication. “Because of Stop & Shop’s Turkey Express program, thousands of Middlesex County residents can celebrate one of our country’s most beloved traditions: a turkey dinner on Thanksgiving. On behalf of the Middlesex County Board of Chosen Freeholders, I thank Stop & Shop for their donation, Community FoodBank of New Jersey for their coordination in this effort, and former New York Giants players Joe Morris, David Tyree, and Jonathan Casillas for their assistance in off-loading these turkeys at the MCFOODS Distribution Center this morning.”

• This rate is higher than the national average of 46% and greater than any of New Jersey’s neighboring states. • The projected food insecurity rate has risen from 8.2% to 12.9%. • The increase in child hunger in New Jersey is particularly startling – the rate has risen 75% due to COVID-19 (up to 1 in 5 children from 1 in 9). RPM approved for 116 affordable housing units on Henderson Road By JENNIFER AMATO Managing Editor
SOUTH BRUNSWICK – RPM Development Group has received approval to construct four buildings in a two-phase application that proposed market rate and affordable housing at 211 Henderson Road
in South Brunswick. Planning Board meetings regarding the application were held on Nov. 4 and Nov. 18. RPM received preliminary major subdivision approval and preliminary site plan approval with bulk variances to construct two multi-family buildings (116 units) on

a 10-acre site in the Affordable Housing II (AH-II) zone on Henderson Road, according to a resolution approved by the Planning Board on Nov. 13. The entire development proposes the construction of 177 apartments in four three-story buildings. Phase I will construct 116 apartments in two three-story buildings, with 226 parking stalls and a playground area. Phase II would include the remaining units to the west. The applicant has only submitted details for Phase I thus far. The AH-II mixed income/100% affordable housing overlay zone permits multifamily mixed income affordable housing developments where at least 55% of the units are affordable to very low, low and moderate income households in a multifamily dwelling format, according to the resolution. RPM will provide at least 70% affordable housing units throughout the entire development; Jessica Caldwell, the applicant’s professional planner, said there is 54.3% affordable housing included in Phase I and 70% for the entire complex. The buildings that are constructed during Phase I will have two front entrances off the access drives, and one entrance off the main boulevard. RPM proposed to loop the circulation flow of the interior with a roundabout. The applicant’s traffic engineer, Andrew Feranda, testified that the complex would create an additional 99 morning peak hour traffic trips, which will consist of 71 trips into and 28 trips out of the property. The afternoon peak period would esti-
mate 70 trips entering and 49 trips exiting the property, according to Feranda. Feranda said there would be no significant change in the level of service of the roads, and he said there would be “very little” delay of traffic, according to his testimony detailed in the resolution. The property abuts the Royal Oaks apartment complex. Henderson Road is to the east, single-family homes are to the west, and a school bus depot is to the south. Representatives of Royal Oaks – professional engineer Peter Ciliberto, professional geotechnical engineer Bob Simpson, and professional planner Peter Steck – asserted that RPM’s representatives failed to provide the board with adequate engineering, traffic and environmental information, according to the resolution. They debated storm water management, soil testing, flooding, non-compliance with affordable housing requirements, noncompatible structures with surrounding developments and the relocation of the buses from the bus depot. Voting for preliminary major subdivision and preliminary site plan approval with bulk variances were Alfonso Adinolfi, Ken Bierman, Ray Kuehner, Jerome Lutin, Barry Nathanson, Paul Prodromo, Edward J. Salvi and Dennis Weitz. Gary Luck voted no. Mirza Rizwan Baig was absent from the vote. Alternate member Daniel Greenberg did not vote. Voting for the preliminary site approval for Phase I were Adinolfi, Bierman, Greenberg, Luck, Lutin, Prodromo and Salvi. Voting against the approval was Weitz. Baig, Patel and Nathanson were absent.

Went, cofounder at Synavir, said in the statement. “We are pleased to collaborate with Dr. Carson’s team to investigate this approach to treatment of COVID-19 and potentially help improve outcomes for newly diagnosed patients.” The researchers are seeking referrals from physicians of outpatients with a SARS-CoV-2 positive test within seven days. Oh, Star of the Sea, help me and show me herein you are my Mother. Oh, Holy Mary Mother of God, Queen of Heaven and Earth! I humbly beseech you from the bottom of my heart to succor me in this petition. There are none that can withstand your power. Oh, show me herein you are my Mother. Oh Mary conceived without sin pray for us who have recourse in thee (3Xs). Holy Mother, I place this cause in your hands (3Xs). Holy Spirit, you who solve all problems, light all roads so I can attain my goal. You who gave me the divine gift to forgive and forget all evil against me and that in all instances in my life you are with me, I want in this short prayer to thank you for all things as you confirm once again that I never want to be separated from you in eternal glory. Thank you for your mercy towards me and mine. + Say this prayer 3 consecutive days and publish prayer after petition is granted. Do not despair. Additional advice and petition. Pray the Rosary regularly. F.A.M.
