olly Ol’ St. Nick traded his eight tiny reindeer for North Brunswick Township Police Department cruisers and utility vehicles as he traversed the township spreading pre-Christmas holiday cheer. “Words cannot describe the feeling you get when you see the look on people’s faces as Santa comes by. Kids cheer and adults pull out their cell phones for videos and pictures. It is one of those rare moments when everyone feels like they are included. No one is excluded, regardless of race, religion or economic status,” Patrolman Fedor Salvador-Romero, one of the event’s original organizers, said in a pre-

pared statement. What began five years ago as an effort to bring joy to those less fortunate has grown from eight to 80 families designated to receive gifts. Gifts were originally the result of township police department employee donations. Now, other township employees, local businesses and community-based organizations donate hundreds of presents for those in need of holiday assistance, according to the statement. Officers come into the headquarters on Hermann Road before their shifts, often joined by their family members to help wrap and distribute gifts.

“We received a donation of 250 stuffed animals at one time. We were able to give every child who came out to greet us something,” Patrolman Cal Hibbits and Lt. Ryan Uzunis, two more of the original event organizers, said in the statement regarding the gift distribution on Dec. 19 and 20. The department receives referrals for gifts from several sources. Churches, social service organizations and individuals aware of the department’s program reach out on behalf of others and themselves. Other times the referrals come from far more challenging circumstances. (Continued on page 7)

he South Brunswick Township Council voted unanimously in favor of an ordinance to create a new energy program that will put the town on a path to offer 100% renewable electricity to all residents by the end of the decade. The ordinance, which was advanced by local residents who worked with Food & Water Watch (F&WW), creates a new program allowing the municipality to purchase energy on behalf of residents at discounted bulk rates, and to set guidelines about the sources of electricity, according to a statement provided by F&WW. The ordinance lays out a timeline for the program to reach the 100% renewable threshold by the year 2030. “Creating this type of clean energy aggregation program is a simple, effective step that municipalities can take right now to clean up air pollution and take real action to confront the climate crisis,” F&WW Central Jersey Organizer Charlie Kratovil said in a statement after the Dec. 22 approval. “This is a huge win for South Brunswick, and we will keep helping to build local campaigns to achieve 100% clean, renewable energy by 2030 across New Jersey.” State law gives residents of some municipalities the power to directly petition local governments to consider an ordinance; the local governing body can either pass it as presented, or put the question to voters to decide. “It’s so good to learn that South Brunswick is joining our neighboring townships in the move to an aggregated energy policy,” Joan W. Scott, a South Brunswick resident and professor emerita at the Institute for Advanced Study, said in the statement. “We not only save on our electric bills, but also address the climate crisis as responsible citizens of the planet.” “I appreciate that South Brunswick is joining other New Jersey townships in adapting a renewable energy program. It is our responsibility to reduce our carbon footprint and do everything possible to reverse global warming,” Eileen Balaban (Continued on page 7)

Monmouth Mobile Home Park offers online shopping spree to children SOUTH BRUNSWICK – Monmouth Mobile Home Park hosts an annual holiday shopping spree for local students from South Brunswick schools. This year, Monmouth Mobile Home Park is instead treating 25 lucky children to an online shopping spree. “This year, due to COVID-19, we decided to do the shopping spree online so that we could be as safe as possible. We weren’t about to let our local kids down. It was important for us to find a way to bring some joy to children in need,” Dan Mandell, manager of Monmouth Mobile Home Park, said in a prepared statement. “This year has been difficult for so many families and especially during the holidays it can be tough. We are happy to help.” The annual event lets one child and one parent loose in the store, giving them approximately an hour to pick out whatever they want. Each child gets $150 to spend, according to the statement. “It is really something amazing to watch as the kids are so thankful and won’t just pick out gifts for themselves but will often buy gifts for other family members. Even though we can’t be together in person this year, I know the kids will have a

blast shopping online,” Mandell said in the statement. The staff at Monmouth Mobile Home Park is fully immersed in community life and are active members in township activities, offering different events, activities and gatherings so everyone can be included, according to the statement. This past summer, Monmouth Mobile Home Park created a garden to help provide nutritious food for their residents who were struggling during the COVID-19 pandemic. They also hosted an outdoor COVID friendly fall festival at a local farm and are in the process of building little free libraries so that the children at the Park have access to books. Other events they have hosted include a Trenton Thunder baseball game outing, a tree lighting, menorah lighting, annual resident holiday party, Easter egg hunt, end of summer ice cream truck and a community yard sale. For more information, call 732-2972051, or visit https://mmhp.com/. Monmouth Mobile Home Park is located at 4017 Route 1, Monmouth Junction section of South Brunswick.

D&R Greenway Land Trust releases new video featuring Babe Ruth’s granddaughter

L

ittle Leaguers and their families will be inspired by watching D&R Greenway’s latest video “Fields of Dreams” featuring sports and the outdoors in the starring role. Linda Ruth Tosetti, granddaughter of legendary home-run hitter Babe Ruth, tells personal stories about the Babe’s early life and how he became motivated to become a baseball player. “My grandfather looked up to Father Mathais, a mountain of a man, and Babe stood head and shoulders over the other kids,” Tosetti said in a prepared statement regarding her grandfather’s mentor at a Catholic school. Viewers are treated to historic photos of Baltimore’s Inner Harbor from Babe Ruth’s youth. Sports fans will hear the story of how he learned to throw. The video begins with D&R Greenway trustee James Fiorentino, an artist who has painted many of baseball’s legendary players. Fiorentino was the youngest artist ever to have his art featured in the National Baseball Hall of Fame in Cooperstown, New York, when he was only 15 years of age. Having begun his sports art career with Joe DiMaggio and Ted Williams, Fiorentino became a college baseball player himself, according to the statement. He talks about the connection he feels to the land

while outdoors in the field, and how important this is in forming a lifelong love of nature. Since 1989, D&R Greenway has permanently protected over 21,000 acres of land in central New Jersey. Fiorentino became vice chair of the Board of Trustees of the land trust in 2019, according to the statement. Farm View Fields and Greenway Meadows parks in Princeton were both saved from housing developments and preserved in 2001 through the leadership of D&R Greenway. These parks provide baseball and soccer fields, as well as places to walk and experience the outdoors, according to the statement. In the video, D&R Greenway’s President and CEO Linda Mead shares that being outdoors in nature cultivates creativity and calm in children who are known to have ADHD, according to the statement. The viewer learns that, in fact, Babe Ruth

may have had “nature-deficit disorder,” a term coined by author Richard Louv in his book “Last Child in the Woods” published in 2005. Tosetti insists that, throughout his legendary life, her grandfather was sustained by nature. “He was a fisherman and huntsman. That’s where he got his solace,” she said in the statement. During the past year, D&R Greenway partnered with the Trenton Thunder baseball team at Waterfront Park in Trenton where parts of the video were filmed. “The way many, many people connect with nature and the outdoors is through the sports their children play when they are young,” Mead said in the statement. High school students from the Latin American Legal Defense and Education Fund’s FUTURO program share how they feel when they are out in nature, according to the statement. These students have worked in partnership with D&R Greenway over the past year, learning about nature’s benefits, clean water and open spaces. In contrast to being indoors during the pandemic, these students’ words about “a good lost” while outside on a wide, open field will stick with the viewer for a long time. Saint Peter’s health care workers receive first doses of Moderna COVID-19 vaccine

S

aint Peter’s University Hospital, a member of Saint Peter’s Healthcare System, began administering the long-anticipated Moderna vaccine for COVID-19 on Dec. 22. Initial vaccinations will be disseminated to hospital employees and physicians with the highest levels of patient interaction and those specifically caring for COVID-19 patients. During a phased process, eventually all employees and physicians who are interested in receiving the vaccine will have an opportunity to be vaccinated. The Moderna vaccine, which requires two doses 28 days apart, recently received Emergency Use Authorization (EUA) from the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA). Emergency Use Authorization authority allows the FDA to help strengthen the nation’s public health protections against chemical, biological, radiological and nuclear threats by facilitating the availability and use of medical counter measures needed during public health emergencies. For the FDA to issue an EUA, safety and efficacy must be demonstrated, and certain criteria must be met, including that there are no adequate, approved and available alternatives. “This is a moment we’ve long anticipated,” said Leslie D. Hirsch, FACHE, president and CEO of Saint Peter’s Healthcare System. “For the past nine months, our dedicated and selfless healthcare heroes have been working on the front lines, committed to saving lives while often risking their own. We are fortunate to be one of the first recipients of the Moderna vaccine, one which has been shown to be 94% effective in preventing COVID-19.” Hirsch said that the arrival of the Moderna vaccine is extremely positive, yet “we need to remind people that while the

Salvador-Romero said, “Officers who have responded to a domestic violence call or a report of a home invasion will take a mental note of what they encounter. Often the family, especially the children, are too shaken to interact with us in a positive way. Santa’s visit is an opportunity for those traumatized earlier to feel better about their interactions with the department and the days ahead. It is our small way of bringing light to what may have otherwise been a dark situation.”

vaccine is expected to prevent disease or decrease its severity, we cannot say for certain that a vaccinated individual can no longer transmit the disease. Therefore, it is prudent, especially during the impending holiday season, that we all continue to wear our face coverings, practice social distancing and engage in proper handwashing protocol.” Saint Peter’s will administer the vaccine in accordance with recommendations from the national Advisory Committee on Immunization Practices, and guidance from the Centers for Disease Control and

Due to the potential for limited initial supply, Saint Peter’s interdisciplinary task force, led by Linda Carroll, MSN, RN, RN-BC, vice president of Patient Care Services and chief nursing officer, will administer the vaccine in phases based on prioritization of those employees with the highest levels of patient interaction and those caring for COVID-19 patients. Eisenberg, a South Brunswick resident, said in the statement. Food & Water Watch is working in 15 municipalities to enact similar 100% renewable energy programs. The group played a key role in creating programs in New Brunswick and Piscataway, saving residents’ on their utility bills while expanding the use of clean, renewable energy. This summer, the campaign won a major victory in Edison, where the township’s council approved an ordinance that puts the fifth-largest township in the state on the path to 100% renewable electricity by 2030, according to the statement. Novenas

ST. JUDE NOVENA May the sacred heart of Jesus be the adored, glorified, loved and preserved throughout the world now and forever. Sacred heart of Jesus pray for us. St. Jude, worker of miracles, pray for us. St. Jude, hope of the hopeless, pray for us. Say this prayer nine times a day. By the eighth day your prayer will be answered. Say it for nine days. It has never been known to fail. Publication must be promised. Thank you, St. Jude.

G.B.

Novenas PRAYER IS POWERFUL Oh, most beautiful flower of Mount Carmel, fruitful vine of splendor of Heaven, Blessed Mother of the son of God, Immaculate Virgin, assist me in my necessity. Oh, Star of the Sea, help me and show me herein you are my Mother. Oh, Holy Mary Mother of God, Queen of Heaven and Earth! I humbly beseech you from the bottom of my heart to succor me in this petition. There are none that can withstand your power. Oh, show me herein you are my Mother. Oh Mary conceived without sin pray for us who have recourse in thee (3Xs). Holy Mother, I place this cause in your hands (3Xs). Holy Spirit, you who solve all problems, light all roads so I can attain my goal. You who gave me the divine gift to forgive and forget all evil against me and that in all instances in my life you are with me, I want in this short prayer to thank you for all things as you confirm once again that I never want to be separated from you in eternal glory. Thank you for your mercy towards me and mine. + Say this prayer 3 consecutive days and publish prayer after petition is granted. Do not despair. Additional advice and petition. Pray the Rosary regularly. F.A.M.
