As part of the meeting, incumbent council members Mary Novak and Vincent Conti were sworn in to serve three-year council terms after winning the November election. Novak has been a member of the council since 2012, previously serving from 1995 to 2000, and Conti has been a member since 2020.
Due to the ongoing coronavirus pandemic, Conti and Novak were the only members of the governing body physically present at the meeting. The other members attended the meeting remotely. After all the council members were seated, Dalina was elected to serve as council president in an unanimous vote by Conti, Novak, Damon Enriquez, Michele Maher, Donna Roberts and himself. U.S. Capitol Police Officer who died during riot hails from area
U
nited States Capitol Police (USCP) Officer Brian D. Sicknick passed away due to injuries sustained while on-duty. Sicknick was responding to the riot at the U.S. Capitol on Jan. 6 and was injured while physically engaging with protesters, according to information provided by the USCP. He returned to his division office and collapsed, according to reports. He was taken to a local hospital where he suc-
cumbed to his injuries at approximately 9:30 p.m. Jan. 7. The death of Sicknick will be investigated by the Metropolitan Police Department’s Homicide Branch, the USCP and federal partners. Sicknick joined the USCP in July 2008, and most recently served in the department’s First Responder’s Unit. “USCP Officer Brian Sicknick embodied the selfless spirit of his native state,” Gov. Phil Murphy said in a prepared state-
ment. “Officer Sicknick was a product of South River and a graduate of the Middlesex County Vocational and Technical Schools. “Before joining the Capitol Police, he was Staff Sgt. Sicknick with the New Jersey Air National Guard. He was a fire team member and leader with the 108th Security Force Squadron, 108th Wing, at Joint Base McGuire-Dix-Lakehurst, and his six years of service included overseas deployments in support of Operation Southern Watch
and Operation Enduring Freedom. “Officer Sicknick gave his life protecting the United States Capitol, and by extension, our very democracy, from violent insurrection. His needless murder at the hands of a mob bent on overthrowing the Constitution he had dedicated his life to upholding is shocking. It is my fervent hope that the rioters whose actions directly contributed to his death are quickly identified and brought to justice,” Murphy said in the statement.

COVID-19 vaccinations bring hope to long-term residents, staff at Reformed Church Home
esidents and staff members at Reformed Church Home (RCH) in Old Bridge received the first dose of the two-dose Pfizer-BioNTech COVID-19 vaccine on Jan. 5, just three weeks after the vaccine became available in New Jersey. Evelyn Arndt, who celebrated her 104th birthday on Dec. 25, was one of the first recipients during the vaccination clinic, as well as Magdalene Holland, a 92-yearold assisted living resident who was the home’s first COVID survivor, according to information provided by RCH. The clinic at RCH was conducted by Walgreens, whose team will return in 21 days to administer the second vaccination. RCH Executive Director and Administrator Kate Shepard, reflecting on the importance of the day, said, “The clinic could not have happened a moment too soon. Although we have been blessed with no COVID fatalities, the fact that families have been separated from their loved ones is upsetting on many levels. Whatever it takes to try and bring residents and families back together, we are going to do it,” she said in the statement.
Grace Brunner, RCH Advanced Practice Nurse, shared her enthusiasm as well, saying, “It was one of the happiest days here in a long time. We are starting the year off right, as in my opinion immunization is the only way out of this devastating situation. It’s the first step to recovery as a nation and to a return to a more normal lifestyle for our residents,” she said in the statement. Brunner, in close collaboration with RCH medical director Dr. Edward Mezic, and many dedicated nursing staff members, has coordinated care for residents infected with COVID-19 since the pandemic took hold last March. Holland said the vaccination clinic went very well and was very organized. “It [the vaccination] didn’t hurt. I was asked to wait for 15 minutes so they could observe if I had any side effects. I continue to have no ill effects whatsoever,” she said in the statement. Holland was diagnosed with COVID-19 in April and spent three weeks recovering at RCH in a separate COVID wing. Upon discharge, she insisted on walking back to

Over the last year, we’ve seen some tragic times and had to make difficult decisions hugely related to the pandemic, but as always Sayreville has prevailed. As a council, we were able to accomplish some great things. “One of the biggest things that I feel we accomplished was amending an ordinance that would ensure that developers are doing their part to maintain the affordable housing requirements put forth by the state. We also received over $2 million in grants. We transitioned to an online payment for water bills. I would also like to acknowledge our borough employees for the great job they have done in these difficult times and I would also like to thank all essential employees for all they do. I look forward to working with my fellow council members, the mayor and our team to keep Sayreville progressing.” In related news, the Sayreville Republican Municipal Committee reorganized at its December meeting, filling the position of chair and vice chair. The committee unanimously elected Councilwoman Donna Roberts as chair and Karen Bailey Bebert to a vacant vice chair position, according to information provided by the Sayreville GOP. Chairman Arthur Rittenhouse and secretary Rosetta Fisher stepped down from their posts. Rittenhouse served seven years, while Fisher served for 15. However, both will remain active with the committee as county committeeman and committeewoman, respectively, according to the statement. Rittenhouse is chair of the Sayreville Shade Tree Commission and president of the Sayreville Historical Society. Red Cross teams with NFL to urge blood, plasma donations
T
he American Red Cross and the National Football League are teaming up this January, during National Blood Donor Month, to urge individuals – especially those who have recovered from COVID-19 – to give blood and to help tackle the national convalescent plasma shortage. Right now, more donors are needed to help hospital patients. Those who come to donate blood or platelets this month will be automatically entered to win two tickets to next year’s Super Bowl LVI in Los Angeles. In addition, those who come to give Jan. 1-20 will also be automatically entered to win the Big Game at Home package for a viewing experience safely at home, with a 65-inch television and a $500 gift card to put toward food and fun. Individuals can schedule an appointment to give blood by visiting RedCrossBlood.org, using the Red Cross Blood Donor App, calling 1-800-RED-CROSS or activating the Blood Scheduling Skill for Amazon Alexa. “Blood and plasma donors who have recovered from COVID-19 may have the power to help critically ill patients currently battling the virus,” Dr. Erin Goodhue, Red Cross medical director of clinical services, said in a prepared statement. “With hospital distributions for convalescent plasma increasing about 250% since October, these generous donations are vital in helping to save lives throughout the winter – a time that is often challenging to collect enough blood products for those in need.” As COVID-19 cases have risen across the U.S., so has the need for convalescent plasma – leading to a shortage of this potentially lifesaving blood product. Like “special teams” units on the field, COVID-19 survivors have a unique ability to make a game-changing difference in the lives of COVID-19 patients. Individuals who have recovered from COVID-19 may have antibodies in their plasma that could provide a
patient’s immune system the boost it needs to beat the virus. How those recovered from COVID-19 can help There are two ways COVID-19 survivors can help – through a convalescent plasma donation or by simply giving whole blood. Plasma from whole blood donations that test positive for COVID-19 antibodies may be used to help COVID-19 patients. Health emergencies don’t pause for holidays, game days or a pandemic – blood is needed every two seconds in the U.S. to help patients battling injury and illness. Blood donation safety precautions To protect the health and safety of Red Cross staff and donors, individuals who do not feel well or who believe they may be ill with COVID-19 should postpone their donation. Each Red Cross blood drive and donation center follows the highest standards of safety and infection control, and additional precautions – including temperature checks, social distancing and face coverings for donors and staff – have been implemented to help protect the health of all those in attendance. Donors are asked to schedule an appointment prior to arriving at the drive and are required to wear a face covering or mask while at the drive, in alignment with Centers for Disease Control and Prevention public guidance. Man sentenced to 15 years in prison due to drunken auto fatality
A
n Old Bridge man has been sentenced for killing a teenager and injuring her passenger during a drunk driving crash last year. Aliaksandr Tsytsenia, 30, of Old Bridge, was sentenced to an aggregate 15 years in prison on one count of seconddegree vehicular homicide and one count of third-degree aggravated assault, according to information provided by Middlesex County Prosecutor Yolanda Ciccone and Chief William Volkert of the Old Bridge Police Department on Dec. 16. The Honorable Diane Pincus, J.S.C. ordered Tsytsenia’s prison sentences be served consecutively. Tsytsenia will have to serve the first 8-and-a-half years of his sentence without parole, pursuant to the No Early Release Act, according to the statement. In pleading guilty, Tsytsenia admitted he was under the influence of alcohol at the
time of the fatal crash. As a result, Pincus ordered Tsytsenia license be revoked for a period of 30 years, according to the statement. The defendant was charged following an investigation by Officer Ronald Atlak of the Old Bridge Police Department and Detective Jonathan Berman of the Middlesex County Prosecutor’s Office. The investigation determined that on May 25, 2019, Tsytsenia was driving his Mercedes S550 on Texas Road when he crossed over the double yellow lines and crashed head on into a car being driven by Aliza Akhtar, 19, of Old Bridge. Both Akhtar and A.A., her passenger, were extricated from their car and transported to a nearby hospital where Akhtar was pronounced dead and A.A. received treatment for her significant bodily injuries, according to the statement.

Old Bridge Council supports Chelsea communities to online fundraising by charities receive COVID-19 vaccine ten back in 1950 … half-a-century before the internet even existed.” JAR Of Hope is now conducting a study called Operation Lifeline, using a chemical formula that may extend the lives of children with Duchenne muscular dystrophy, according to the statement. The results so far are encouraging, but experimental trials cost about $35,000 a month for the 20,000 children with Duchenne in the U.S. Old Bridge Councilman Erik DePalma was touched by the fundraising plight of local charities, according to the statement. “I proposed the resolution,” DePalma said in the statement, “when I realized that in New Jersey you can bet on a horse or a sport … but you can’t buy a raffle ticket online to save children who have a disease because of an old, antiquated law written 70 years ago. What kind of sense does that make?” DePalma added that he sees the job of a township council as taking care of its citizens, including the smallest among them, according to the statement. “Our focus at JAR Of Hope is simple,” Jim Raffone said in the statement. “Give these little children a chance to become adults.”

The vaccine has been exhaustively tested and approved by the FDA and CDC and is said to be at least 95% effective in preventing illness due to COVID-19.” The vaccine, given in two injections a month apart, will be administered by trained pharmacists from CVS, which is handling vaccines for thousands of long term care residents and staff nationwide.

PRAYER IS POWERFUL Oh, most beautiful flower of Mount Carmel, fruitful vine of splendor of Heaven, Blessed Mother of the son of God, Immaculate Virgin, assist me in my necessity. Oh, Star of the Sea, help me and show me herein you are my Mother. Oh, Holy Mary Mother of God, Queen of Heaven and Earth! I humbly beseech you from the bottom of my heart to succor me in this petition. There are none that can withstand your power. Oh, show me herein you are my Mother. Oh Mary conceived without sin pray for us who have recourse in thee (3Xs). Holy Mother, I place this cause in your hands (3Xs). Holy Spirit, you who solve all problems, light all roads so I can attain my goal. You who gave me the divine gift to forgive and forget all evil against me and that in all instances in my life you are with me, I want in this short prayer to thank you for all things as you confirm once again that I never want to be separated from you in eternal glory. Thank you for your mercy towards me and mine. + Say this prayer 3 consecutive days and publish prayer after petition is granted. Do not despair. Additional advice and petition. Pray the Rosary regularly. F.A.M.
PRAYER TO ST. JUDE Oh Holy St. Jude, Apostle and Martyr, great in virtue and rich in miracles, near Kinsman of Jesus Christ, faithful intercessor of all who invoke your special patronage in time of need, to you I have recourse from the depth of my heart and humbly beg to whom God has given such great power to come to my assistance. Help me in my present and urgent petition. In return, I promise to make your name known and cause you to be invoked. Say three Our Fathers, three Hail Marys and Glorias. Publication must be promised. St. Jude pray for us all who invoke your aid. Amen. This Novena has never been known to fail. This Novena must be said for 9 consecutive days. Thanks.
