Sayreville hoopster Van Note surpasses 1,000-point milestone By STEVEN BASSIN Staff Writer

O

n Feb. 16, Sayreville War Memorial High School girls basketball player Stephanie Van Note etched her name into the school’s history books by surpassing 1,000 career points. A joyful moment of accomplishment that seemed unlikely to occur just a couple months prior because of the uncertainty revolving around the coronavirus pandemic happened when Van Note drove to the hoop in the first quarter for a fastbreak layup. The basket was part of an “amazing night” that Van Note got to experience at home with her teammates and family members in attendance. The senior knocked in a careerhigh 30 points to lead Sayreville to a 55-50 victory over Edison High School, making the night an even sweeter one for Van Note. “I was exuberant,” Van Note said in an interview about her 30-point

performance. “I was so happy to surpass 1,000 points and have a good scoring night. Getting the win was a huge part of it as well. It was an amazing night.” Van Note is the seventh player in the program’s history to reach the 1,000 point mark. During her 16 years with the Sayreville girls basketball program, Coach Janet Cook has seen five players surpass 1,000 points and has been the head coach for the last two 1,000-point club members. Isi Enahoro was the last girls basketball player from Sayreville to score over 1,000 points back in 2017. Jackie Rodriguez accomplished the feat three years earlier for the Bombers during the 2013-14 season. Being the Bombers’ top defender during her freshman and sophomore seasons, Van Note knew she had to improve her offensive game and become a top scorer to help Sayreville (Continued on page 10)

embers of the Old Bridge Township Council took a stance opposing state Sen. Joseph Vitale’s (D-19) proposal to mandate COVID-19 vaccines for students once the vaccine is approved for students and once students return to full in-person learning. Vitale, chairman of the Senate’s health committee, began discussion with other lawmakers mandating the COVID-19 vaccine for students last month. “The side effects of these vaccines have not been fully studied yet,” Ward 4 Councilman Mark Razzoli said at a meeting on Feb.

9. “Making it mandatory puts children at greater risk than COVID-19 itself.” The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) gave emergency use approval to the Pfizer-BioNTech vaccine on Dec. 11 and the Moderna vaccine on Dec. 18. “The FDA issued emergency use authorization approved for [people] 16 and older for prevention of COVID-19,” Razzoli said. “An individual’s health and medical condition is personal and private. More than 200 Holocaust survivors in Middlesex County can receive assistance from national partnership

A

s the pandemic approaches its year mark, Holocaust survivors across the United States continue to face new and renewed daily struggles. COVID-19 has only further exacerbated and enhanced the challenges that this vulnerable population faces, according to KAVOD SHEF (Survivors of the Holocaust Emergency Fund). Health and safety protocols have heightened social isolation for survivors. Holocaust survivors living in poverty have been forced to choose between heat or food, medicine or rent. Many have lived in dire conditions because they did not have the funds needed to repair their homes, according to the statement. Over the past year, survivors have been forced to reckon with new, difficult questions: How will I get food this week if I cannot go to the grocery store? Will I be able to afford my medicine with decreased access and rising prices? The KAVOD Survivors of the Holocaust Emergency Fund (SHEF) initiative, launched by Seed the Dream Foundation, in partnership with KAVOD-Ensuring Dignity for Survivors in March 2019, supports thousands of Holocaust survivors across the United States. With the emergence and rapid spread of COVID-19, this special initiative has been identified as a key program reaching any survivor in need regardless of where he or she may live. Moving into 2021, KAVOD SHEF will assist Middlesex County’s survivor’s emergency needs. The KAVOD SHEF initiative partners with the national nonprofit aid organization, KAVOD, the Jewish Federation in the Heart of NJ, Jewish Family Services (JFS) of Middlesex County, national philanthropic partners, and local donors to directly respond to survivor needs in nine emergency areas: food, medical, dental, vision, urgent home needs (utilities, rent, repairs), emergency home care, transportation, essential deliveries, and PPE. In Middlesex County, there are nearly 200 Holocaust survivors living in the community, according to the statement. JFS Middlesex, in partnership with the Jewish Federation in the Heart of NJ, joined KAVOD SHEF in 2019. As the critical needs of aging Holocaust survivors continue to grow exponentially with each passing year, the KAVOD SHEF partnership ensures that survivors are able to purchase much-needed groceries and access critical dental care, medical procedures and equipment, home care and

we put our survivors on a waiting list for emergency services? The time is now to help them, not 10 years from now, but today while we can still help. It is unconscionable to think of a Holocaust survivor who does not have enough food to eat or must decide whether to pay an electric bill, a plumber or a doctor’s office. With the partnership of our Jewish Federation in the Heart of NJ and KAVOD SHEF, our Holocaust survivors are able to see with new eyeglasses, eat again after extensive dental work, use new hearing aids to enjoy the laughter of family, and bring in nursing aides to help them stay in their homes, aging with comfort and dignity.” “Jewish Federation identifies and mobilizes resources to address the most pressing needs in the Jewish community,” Susan Antman, executive director of Jewish Federation in the Heart of NJ, said in the statement. “Helping to bring all the pieces of the JFS – KAVOD SHEF – Federation partnership together for the benefit of our treasured Holocaust survivors is more than a manifestation of our Federation mission, but we hope a loving and respectful way to remind Holocaust survivors that they are not forgotten and never alone.” The KAVOD SHEF hotline is 720-2958484. We Are The Power By Paul Hall

A

nywhere there’s people, there’s power. This is a philosophy that Fred Hampton (Daniel Kaluuya), the chairman of the Black Panther Party of Chicago, learns is truly applicable in the late 1960s. Hampton has found a way to meld together the power of political muscle with the physical strength of others in the community to create a formidable foe for the governing establishment in Judas and the Black Messiah. The Chicago police, under the watch of Mayor Richard Daley, will do everything possible to put down the movement, but more interested in the powerful group that is forming is J. Edgar Hoover (Martin Sheen). Hoover views the Black Panther Party as a terrorist cell that preaches as much racial hatred as groups like the KKK. He pushes every person at his dis-

posal to do their best to end the threat. FBI agent Roy Mitchell (Jesse Plemons) has just the man to infiltrate the party: Bill O’Neal (LaKeith Stanfield). O’Neal gets caught trying to steal a car while impersonating an FBI officer and agrees to go undercover within the party to avoid his own charges. It is that decision that sends him deep within the inner circle of Fred Hampton’s organization. O’Neal does not comprehend it, but his actions will have a long-lasting impact on not only his life, but also on the lives of many individuals. Hampton’s Panthers are trying to empower Black Chicagoans. His breakfast programs feed hundreds of children and he is actively educating the kids on things that make them unique. This uniting of the underprivileged scares the people in charge. And it’s that power struggle that will bring the movement to the crossroads that could change things forever.

Kaluuya is wonderful as Hampton. He displays the growth of a man who evolves from an individual with a simple goal of uniting a community to display political power, to a complex strategist who will use any means necessary to stand up to his oppression. The growth drives Kaluuya’s passionate and meaningful performance as he evolves from a state of quiet strength to an overt show of power, exclaiming “I am a revolutionary” alongside a throng of supporters. Stanfield is perfect as the foil to Kaluuya. He knows when to give us a frightened child, an overwhelmed teen or a conflicted man. Stanfield’s performance is award-worthy simply for his ability to become his character. Stanfield’s ability to allow viewers feel his conflict, to expose us to the good and bad that live within Kaluuya’s Hampton, and to stand up to a man who doesn’t quite understand the monumental nature of his role in a changing society creates a performance that rises to a sensational level. Judas and the Black Messiah is blessed with many stars in supporting roles,

from Sheen and Plemons to the amazing Dominique Fishback as Deborah Johnson. Fishback excels in her portrayal of the woman who is strong enough to handle a confident man and the attention that comes with that. Women like Johnson are often the real power in any movement, and director Shaka King makes that obvious. This is a film that will have detractors. Every movement has bad elements, and the Panthers were no exception. But truth can be found when you dig deeper and don’t stop at a singular explanation for anything. It is in listening to messages, learning from movements and finding common ground that we unite and become truly powerful. Paul’s Grade: AJudas and the Black Messiah Rated R Stars: Daniel Kaluuya, LaKeith Stanfield, Jesse Plemons, Dominique Fishback Director: Shaka King

A

cataract is a clouding of the natural lens in the eye that distorts vision. The symptoms of cataracts include unclear or blurry vision, diminished color vision, glare with poor night vision, and sometimes double or multiple images in one eye. The good news is that they can be fixed within minutes with outpatient surgery. The surgery consists of breaking up and removing the cataract and replacing it with a lens called an intraocular lens (IOL). In the past, intraocular lenses could correct distance vision or reading vision, not both. Today’s premium lenses can correct both with little or no side effects. The American Society of Cataract and

Dove Hospice Services of New Jersey seeks compassionate volunteers to provide support to local hospice patients and their families. Hospice patient care volunteers visit with patients in their homes, which can also be nursing facilities or assisted living facilities, at least once a week. They read to the patient, reminisce about their lives, play cards, help with letter writing and provide respite for caregivers. Visits can be virtual, and are either during the day or early evening. Volunteers may also assist with administrative work within the hospice office. Patient care volunteers complete an application and attend a virtual volunteer training program that covers the role of a hospice volunteer. Day and evening virtual training programs are offered.

ON THE ROAD PETER PERROTTA

2021 Chevrolet Suburban 4WD High Country

W

hen I think of the Chevrolet Suburban, it is kind of hard for me not to think about the U.S. Presidential motorcades featuring all those blacked-out Suburbans which I am sure are bomband bulletproof. The Secret Service commandeers a “presidential” Suburban limo for our beloved leader which has been reported to have several identical versions for security reasons. The potential bad guys will never know which Suburban the Peter Perrotta president might be traveling in on any particular day. While I would never be pretentious enough to fantasize that I am the president, when you settle behind the wheel of one of these monstrous SUV’s, you do feel rather “presidential” – or at least like you might be worthy enough to be one of those Secret Service agents who gets to drive him around. I recently jumped behind the wheel of the 2021 Chevrolet Suburban 4WD High Country for one week so I can entertain my On The Road fans on what it is like to drive one of these rather large SUVs. First off, the enormity of this vehicle could be a bit unsettling – at first – but one does get used to it. For the record, the 3.0 liter turbo diesel High Country Suburban I tested, weighs 6,072 pounds, holds 28 gallons of diesel fuel and features the following dimensions: it is 225.7 inches long; 81.1 inches wide; 75.7 inches tall. Beyond the enormity of all that, it has a maximum cargo space – with the second and third rows folded down – of 144.7 cubic feet and can tow up to 8,300 pounds. Wow! There is nothing like good ol’ American ingenuity folks and if that doesn’t impress you, I’m not sure what will. But, lo and behold, this beast is not as fossil fuel happy as you might think. Two of the biggest changes Chevy made to the Suburban for 2021 are offering it up in a much more fuel consumption friendly 3.0 liter, in-line, six cylinder turbo diesel engine and adding a fully independent rear

2021 Chevrolet Suburban

suspension. The Duramax turbo diesel on my tester puts out 277 horsepower at 460 pound feet of torque and is coupled with a very smooth 10 speed automatic transmission. The EPA estimates that this six cylinder turbo diesel gets an overall rating of 22 miles per gallon – 20 mpg in city driving and 26 mpg on the highway. For a vehicle of this size, that’s not too shabby. The EPA estimates that this version of the Suburban would cost – on average – about $2,050 per year to run as it uses 4.5 gallons of gas per every 100 miles driven. The regular gas V-8 versions of the Suburban are not quite as fuel efficient, however. The 5.3 liter V-8 in a 4WD Suburban gets 15 mpg in city driving and 19 on the highway. The 6.2 liter V8 4WD version gets 14 mpg in city driving and 19 on the highway. The addition of the fully independent rear suspension is a winner in my book. By adding that feature it does two important things. It allows Chevy to redesign the rear cargo area to be completely flat – without those odd looking rear wheel humps – and it affords this Suburban a really smooth and

comfortable ride. With the addition of the fully independent rear suspension and the inclusion of an adaptive air ride suspension – included in the High Country Deluxe option package – this Suburban had a dream like ride quality to it. I found it to be extremely comfortable and shock absorbing. Of course, none of this luxury and innovation comes cheap. My tester carries a bottom line sticker price of $82,495. The base price of the High Country 4WD Suburban is $75,300. Added options on my tester included: $5,500 for the High Country Deluxe package; $1,995 for a rear seat entertainment system; $350 for a power sliding floor center console; $1,500 for the Duramax turbo diesel engine and $1,295 for destination and delivery. The Deluxe High Country package is loaded with goodies including: power retractable side steps; adaptive cruise control; enhanced emergency braking; power panoramic sunroof; air ride suspension and a very advanced trailering system. Overall, I found my week behind the wheel of the High Country diesel Suburban to be rather enjoyable.

Like I said, once you get use to the enormity of this vehicle you can settle in and enjoy its comfort. It still isn’t the kind of vehicle you want to try to take into Center City Philadelphia or New York City and try your hand at parallel parking with. It cruises quite nicely on the highway. It’s not all that nimble in city driving, obviously. The four wheel drive system works rather well in inclement weather. I found that in snow and ice conditions the 4X4 gave me a shot on confidence on the icy and snowy roads. I found the 3.0 liter turbo diesel to be enough power but a tad sluggish in spots. I would have liked to try the version with the larger V-8 gas engines to compare. At the end of the day, if you have a fairly fat wallet, a few kids, a couple of dogs and a boat to trailer this would certainly be a large SUV to have on your radar screen if you were in the market.

Vaccinations (Continued from page 1)

vaccines that have not demonstrated safety and effectiveness using the same rigorous, scientific standards that are standard of other drugs.” Ward 5 Councilman Tony Paskitti said religious exemptions for vaccines have been a time honored position among religious folks across the country. “This enables them to abstain from giving their children vaccines,” he said. “It’s a personal choice and parents have rights. I don’t think vaccines or any medication should be mandatory from our government.” The council unanimously approved a resolution opposing the proposal to mandate COVID-19 vaccines for students. Support for in-person back-to-school resolution The council approved a resolution supporting township parents and children in their request to open schools safely without further delay. Ward 3 Councilwoman Edina Brown abstained from the vote. Parents called in to the council meetings in January and February asking support from council members for re-opening schools. They held a rally outside of the Education Association Building in January. Mayor Owen Henry and several council members joined the rally. School officials announced at a Board of Education meeting on Jan. 12 that they planned, at the time, to return to hybrid inperson instruction with an AA/BB 50% capacity on March 1. The district began its hybrid in-person instruction model in October at 33% capacity; however, with a rise in state and local COVID-19 numbers, the district returned to a fully remote schedule on Nov. 23. Ward 2 Councilman Erik DePalma said he supports the students going back to inperson learning because of the rise in mental health issues. “There is a large number of students who are suffering,” he said. “Suicide rates have jumped up since COVID-19 has risen in our country. It’s not something we should take lightly. There are many children that require that hands-on experience with their education in the school, [which is] one of the most important things in their

NEWSPAPER MEDIA GROUP • www.centraljersey.com

development. Some [students] can get the help they need and eventually learn and function by themselves, which is great.” DePalma said students deserve better and parents deserve to have the opportunity to make the case whether they want to keep their children home or not. He said his third-grade daughter sits next to him in his office at home during remote learning. “I’m lucky enough I’m at a point in my career that I can stop what I’m doing to help her with a technology issue she may be having and help her with some of the work that she’s doing,” he said, adding some parents do not have the luxury of stepping away from work, even if for five minutes. Brown said she understands the parents’ concerns on both sides. She said she has two children in the district, a student in eighth grade and a student in fourth grade. “To be honest, [remote learning] is more difficult for my fourth grader than my eighth grader,” she said. “It’s harder to pay attention when that young … [they] miss the social interactions.” Brown said she understands the concerns about the psychological effects remote learning may have on the students. “I’m monitoring my kids very closely to make sure they are OK,” she said. “Everyone needs socialization and school is a big part of that.” The Old Bridge Public School District implemented Wellness Wednesdays on Jan. 19, which are half-day sessions for all students, in response to concerns from parents, teachers and students in some cases on the overwhelming pressure they face as the district continues its remote platform. When the district returns to its hybrid in-person instruction model, Wednesdays will be a remote day for all students. James Tuohy, assistant superintendent of education programs, said Wednesday afternoons allow for students to catch up on missed work; and schedule time with their school counselors, child student teacher case managers, student assistant coordinator counselors or teachers to address concerns they have with remote learning. Teachers can also use the time to communicate with students and parents and plan for additional classroom activities, Tuohy said. Contact Kathy Chang at kchang@newspapermediagroup.com

win games going into the 2019-20 season. She also took on the challenge of being the team’s point guard and flourished in the role by leading the Bombers to a 17-10 record. Van Note averaged just around 17 points a game during her junior campaign and tallied over 200 more points (458) than she did as a sophomore. “Her growth over the past four years has been exciting to see,” Cook said of Van Note. “It just shows how hard work pays off.” In her eyes, Cook believes Van Note continues the trend that “being determined and working hard work does pay off,” and that her success is something younger girls in the school district can look up to. What Cook is most impressed by from her senior point guard is how much of a leader Van Note has become over the past two years. “This is her team,” Cook said. “Everyone listens to her. We’re going to follow her lead.” A chance to have a senior season was Van Note’s “main concern” during the offseason as the high school basketball community awaited the decision of this season’s fate from the New Jersey State Interscholastic Athletic Association. Whether it was only “one game or two games,” Van Note just wanted the chance to be on the court one last time with her teammates. Once the NJSIAA approved a 15-game season, it came time for Van Note to set her sights on 1,000 points.

It will be running daily, with no out of pocket cost. To make an appointment, visit https:// test.svnj.online/reg/sayreville.aspx

For a complete list of community announcements, visit www.centraljersey.com. Any items not appearing in the newspaper will be posted online.

Standing only three points shy of the 1,000-point mark heading into the game against Edison, Van Note knocked in both her free throw attempts from the strike to start the game. One point now just stood in the way of Van Note achieving her lifelong dream and it became a reality moments later when she knocked in a layup to give Sayreville an 8-6 lead and stamp her name into the school’s record books. Emotions ran wild after Van Note hit the layup as her teammates came out on the court to congratulate her and people in the bleachers stood to give her a standing ovation. “It was so emotional,” Van Note said. “Everyone came out to congratulate me. I was so happy.” Van Note has recorded 168 points through the first eight games of the season and has helped Sayreville get out to a 5-3 record going into its contest against New Brunswick High School on Feb. 20. The senior has been on fire through the last four games, averaging 22.8 points in that stretch where the Bombers are 3-1. From picking up a basketball back when she was three years old to now being a 1,000-point scorer, Van Note is “grateful” for the success she has had on the hardwood. Her future on the court after high school is still unknown, but for now, Van Note is hoping to finish out her senior season by leading Sayreville to a winning record and earning all-conference honors. “It’s very exciting to have a season,” Van Note said. “Getting 1,000 points has been a goal I have had for my whole life. It feels amazing. I am so happy.”
