ig Brothers Big Sisters of Coastal & Northern New Jersey (BBBSCNNJ) has named Stephanie DeFeo of Old Bridge and her Little Sister Jasmine as Community Based Big Sister and Little Sister of the Year. Ernest Ebanks of Mount Olive Township and his Little Brother Dreveon were named Community Based Big Brother and Little Brother of the Year. “We are inspired by Ernest and Stephanie’s dedication to the BBBSCNNJ program, commitment to their matches, and the incredible impact they have had on the lives of their Littles,” William Salcedo, executive director of BBBSCNNJ said in a prepared statement. “Ernest and Stephanie are true role models, the epitome of what mentors can and should be, and excellent ambassadors for Big Brothers Big Sisters.” DeFeo and her Little Sister Jasmine
were matched when Jasmine was 6 years old, and they celebrated their 11-year match anniversary last month, according to the statement. Throughout this time, DeFeo has been a constant support to Jasmine. She was there to offer guidance and support as Jasmine was transitioning into high school, starting her first job, taking her driver’s test, and now as she prepares for her future beyond high school, according to the statement. Jasmine’s mother has shared that Jasmine is more open with DeFeo than anyone, and credits her for helping Jasmine step out of her comfort zone by encouraging her to try new things, according to the statement. From going on hikes, grabbing lunch, and trying photo-worthy milkshakes, to seeing concerts, plays, and ballets together, they’ve created many memories over
the last 11 years, according to the statement. Some of these outings have even become annual traditions, such as going back to school shopping at the end of each summer and attending the BBBSCNNJ’s holiday parties. Although they will be graduating out of the program soon, DeFeo, Jasmine and Jasmine’s mother have all expressed that this friendship is one that will last a lifetime, according to the statement. Stephanie even recently reassured Jasmine, “You have me for life,” according to the statement. “I have been a Big to Jasmine for 11 amazing years and have watched her learn and grow into a beautiful butterfly,” DeFeo said in the statement. “I have been able to provide guidance, build a wonderful (Continued on page 11)
ov. Phil Murphy has unveiled his Fiscal Year 2022 budget, which includes proposed funding for New Jersey’s public school districts during the 2021-22 academic year. In terms of state aid, some school districts will see an increase in their support from Trenton, while some school districts will see their state aid continue to decrease, and others will have no change in their state aid. The amount of state aid a school district receives helps to determine the amount of taxes a school board must raise from a municipality’s residential and commercial property owners to support the operation of a school district in an academic year. For school districts that are scheduled to lose state aid in 2021-22, the impact of the reduction will become clear when school board members introduce their budgets for the upcoming academic year during the next few weeks and administrators explain how the loss of state aid will be accommodated in their budget. According to information provided by the New Jersey School Boards Association, local school districts will see the following year-to-year changes in their state aid: • Old Bridge School District – A decrease of $6.11 million from $38.3 million in 2020-21 to $32.2 million in 2021-22; • Sayreville School District – An increase of $4.16 million from $29.1 million in 2020-21 to $33.2 million in 2021-22; • South Amboy School District – No change in the $6.63 million received in 2020-21 that will remain in 2021-22. Murphy is proposing to provide $18.1 billion in pre-Kindergarten through grade 12 school aid funding in Fiscal Year 2022. His proposal is subject to review and approval in the state Legislature. The governor’s proposed FY2022 budget offers $578 million in additional K-12

40 Years Ago By Meredith Ennis, ReMIND Magazine 1981 was a year of contrasts, with significant endings and beginnings taking place on the small screen and in the real world alike. Minutes after Ronald Reagan is sworn in as the 40th president in January, Iranian officials announce the release of 52 American hostages who had been held for 444 days. Muhammad Ali loses what turns out to be his final fight. After 19 years, Walter Cronkite signs off on his last broadcast of CBS Evening News. Singer Bob Marley (pictured) dies at the age of 36. The first cases of AIDS are clinically recorded in Los Angeles. On the happier side of things, two significant weddings made news: In July, a worldwide television audience of 750 million people watch the elaborate wedding ceremony of Charles, Prince of Wales and Lady Diana Spencer. And in November, fans of the soap opera General Hospital make the wedding of characters Luke and Laura the highest-rated hour in daytime television history.

However, she put her own career and life on hold when her father was diagnosed with Alzheimer’s disease. Ashley Campbell joined her father on his goodbye tour in 2011-12. “I can’t even put into words how priceless it was for me to be able to perform with my dad,” Ashley Campbell said in a statement provided by Artis Senior Living of Princeton Junction, which will hold a virtual talk with Campbell March 23. “I had the best seat in the house, being right there on stage with him every night. Watching him was the ultimate lesson in sharing joy and experiences through music.” She was at her father’s side until he eventually lost his battle with Alzheimer’s. Since her father’s death in 2017, Ashley Campbell has dedicated her life to her musical career and to sharing the impact of her

family’s journey with Alzheimer’s. She reinforces the importance of caring for the caregiver, those who are oftentimes neglected, according to the statement. Ashley Campbell will take part in a virtual program, “I’ll Do The Remembering: A Daughter’s Journey Through Alzheimer’s,” at 5:30 p.m. March 23 via Zoom. The program will offer strategies on how to help loved ones and family navigate the journey that is Alzheimer’s.
Artis of Princeton Junction, a memory care residence, offers the following caregiver tips to families to ease the frustration and worry so often associated with the disease: • Become informed about the disease. Knowing the symptoms and course of Alzheimer’s disease, as well as treatment options, will help the caregiver feel more in control. Initiate discussions with the patient’s physician, attend seminars and read

New OWN Series ‘Delilah’ Tackles The Legal System
By Taylor Neumann OWN continues to tell important Black stories with its new series Delilah, premiering Tuesday, March 9. It comes from creator Craig Wright, who previously helmed the network’s hit Greenleaf, which was the most-watched cable series among African American viewers before wrapping up after five seasons. Delilah promises to also be must-see television — it stars Maahra Hill as Delilah Connolly, a North Carolina lawyer who left a big firm a decade ago to raise her children. Now, she’s back and ready to take on the cases no one else will, helping those who society has ignored or thrown away. The inspiration for Delilah came from a desire to tell stories that affect many Americans, with a strong heroine at the heart.

“We just wanted to make something bigger and broader so we could ask even more questions about where society is headed and how Black women and Black Americans are going to continue to be a major part of the unfolding of American history and world history,” Wright said. Delilah is just the latest in a line of strong female characters on OWN, a network that shows all the ways women can stretch the limits and achieve incredible things. “A character like Delilah, who is so passionate about addressing injustice, those concerns — as much injustice as a lot of Americans have experienced over the past four years, there’s always injustice,” Wright explained. “Delilah’s desire for justice and for fairness and for truth transcends all political boundaries and the need for women like Delilah in America is always going to be there. And just thank God she showed up.” The Sayreville Public Library will offer the following virtual programs for adults: • Share a passion for knitting and crocheting and pick up a few new tips from fellow crafters at 6:30 p.m. March 11 and every second Thursday of the month. Sayreville will bid farewell to two retiring teachers By MATTHEW SOCKOL Staff Writer
SAYREVILLE – As they prepare to retire at the end of the 2020-21 school year, two longtime teachers in the Sayreville School District are remembered for their service. During a meeting on March 2, the Board of Education recognized the retirements of Lori McLafferty, a second grade teacher at the Dwight D. Eisenhower Elementary School, and Cecelia Russo, a special education teacher at the Sayreville War Memorial High School (SWMHS). Both retirements will become effective on July 1, the first day of the upcoming 2021-22 school year. According to Superintendent of Schools Richard Labbe, McLafferty joined the district in 1995 at Eisenhower and has since remained at the school. “Over the next 25 years, Lori would touch generations of Eisenhower students and their families during this time,” Labbe said. “Her devotion to her students, colleagues and her profession would be on full display each and every day. Lori’s excellence was recognized by her peers when she was named the Eisenhower Elementary School Teacher of the Year in 2011. “Lori has spent countless hours supporting new staff as the mentor coordinator and has worked tirelessly on school-wide events, like Eisenhower’s 50th anniversary, along with Veterans Day and the Jeans for Troops Initiative,” he continued. “Lori’s commitment to the Sayreville community represents the best of who we are all as educators. She will be truly missed.” Russo, according to Labbe, has been a special education teacher at SWMHS since 2016. “In this role she has been asked to serve
as our students in a variety of settings throughout the special education continuum and across several different content areas,” the superintendent said. “To this end, Miss Russo’s support of nature, passion and expertise made her extremely versatile, showing professional competency in the areas of targeted reading instruction and Spanish language support. “In addition, Miss Russo emerged as a technological leader within the Special Education Department, quickly mastering such district initiatives as Encore Systems, PowerSchool Google Platform and Frontline IEP,” Labbe continued. “She did this well before hybrid learning made these platforms necessary. In fact, Miss Russo has been the go-to person for help in setting up or troubleshooting our technology platforms for many years. She has presented to fellow staff members during staff development day on these initiatives. “Over the years, Miss Russo also served on many committees, including professional development, the district evaluation advisory council and on the district technology committee. Miss Russo should further be recognized for her commitment to the art of instruction. She is researchbased, always infusing the most recent methodology into her teaching. In fact, Miss Russo set out to teach herself Spanish as a second language and within one year, became a much requested co-teacher by her colleagues for the in-class resource center setting. “She is a consistent resource to the department and students taking on positions, such as literacy academy teacher and supplemental support, which go beyond the school day hours. Miss Russo, as you can see will be sorely missed by many, but we wish her all the best in all future endeavors,” he said.

Educators eligible for COVID-19 vaccines come March 15 By ANDREW HARRISON Staff Writer
S
uperintendents and administrators in school districts statewide received welcome news, when Gov. Phil Murphy announced that more teachers will be able to make appointments to receive COVID-19 vaccinations. Starting March 15, teachers and support staff for pre-K through 12th grade, not currently eligible, would become eligible for vaccine access this month in the state’s vaccination roll out. Prior to the expansion of eligibility, vaccinations were only available for educators and staff who were individuals at high risk or have certain medical conditions. “Two weeks from today these groups will be able to make appointments and start getting vaccinated. What is being
constructed now until March 15, the exact how, where and some cases when is going to be worked out,” Murphy said at his COVID-19 briefing on March 1. “That is to be determined.” To educators specifically, Murphy added that they will work with New Jersey Health Commissioner Judith Persichilli’s team, the New Jersey Department of Education, the New Jersey Education Association (NJEA), school leaders and local education stakeholders and the state vaccination sites on ensuring full access without interrupting the school day. “Depending on the community group that you are in, you may have different path to your vaccine,” Murphy said. “Depending on who you are you may not be calling the call center or state’s registration system, obviously by March 15 and March 29 respectively there will be very explicit
instructions.” The Mercer County Association of School Administrators (MCASA) and Middlesex County Association of School Administrators were two of many associations across the state that had been urging Murphy to place educators in the highest priority to receive vaccinations. “We are very excited to hear that educators will finally be eligible for the vaccine and we anxiously await details on how the distribution will take place,” said Thomas Smith, superintendent of Hopewell Valley Regional Schools and president of MCASA. “We stand ready and willing to assist in getting our staff vaccinated.” In addition to educators and support staff, childcare workers in licensed and registered settings; public and local transportation workers, including bus, taxi, rideshare and airport employees; NJ Tran-

or 27 years the E Class sedan has long been Mercedes Benz’ breadand-butter. Well folks, that bread-and-butter just got a bit upper crusty. The luxury German auto makers’ best selling model has undergone a facelift for 2021 – inside and out – and the results have been to rave reviews. So much so that in November MotorTrend announced that the Mercedes E-Class Peter Perrotta lineup was the winner of MotorTrend’s 2021 “Golden Calipers” for Car of the Year – one of the most prestigious and sought after honors by the world’s automotive manufacturers. In an effort to bring my On The Road readers up to speed on the most recent automotive developments, I recently jumped behind the wheel of the 2021 E450 4matic Sedan for one week to see what all the fuss was about. It didn’t disappoint. If one was going to start completely from scratch and design and build a prototypical luxury sedan – using the best of today’s modern technology – the 2021 Mercedes Benz E 450 4matic sedan would be close to what you would get. While not perfect – nothing is – this newly redesigned sedan upholds all of the solid traditions of what the E Class sedan has been all about, while at the same time sprinkling in all of the modern technology now at the disposal of modern day car makers. The result is quite astounding. To start with, the exterior look of the E450 has been redesigned to offer a more aggressive and sportier look. It features redesigned headlamps and tail lamps, radiator grille and bumper. The new exterior look works well. It doesn’t compromise the traditional look and design the E-class has held for decades, but at the same time it provides a fresher more modern, sportier and aggressive look. On the inside, the E450 is simply astounding. New interior highlights to the E450 include a stunning 12.3 inch dual widescreen display for its MBUX control system, a

newly designed steering wheel and controls and opulent new leather upholstery, trim, paint and wheel options. But, Mercedes didn’t stop there. Under the hood, the new E450 sedan has been upgraded with an electrified 3.0 liter inline 6 cylinder engine that is now integrated with an electric generator called EQ Boost – that includes a 48-volt on board electrical system. The result of this new engine and EQ boost system gives the E450 an impressive 362 horsepower. Overall, I found the new E450 comfortable to drive. It’s roomy and luxurious. The car drives silky smooth, capable of being driven conservatively in and out of everyday traffic. At the same time, if you are feeling a bit frisky, you can select the “sports plus” drive mode and this car will compete with the best of them in sporty and aggressive driving. Moreover, Mercedes tried and true 4matic system – automatic 4-wheel drive – also makes this sedan quite capable in inclement weather. On one Saturday during my test week, I drove this E450 from Maple Shade to Wayne, New Jersey, in a driving rain and wind storm. It handled the treachery on the New Jersey Turnpike and Garden State Parkway quite well and I felt very confi-
dent navigating it in inclement weather. The MBUX interior communications system, incorporated into the operation of the 12.3-inch screen, can be a bit overwhelming at first, but once you learn the ins and outs of how to use the sensitive touch pad on the center console and to use the proper voice commands, it all works quite well. One of the new features of the new communication system is an Alexis-like system where by you can – just by saying “Hi Mercedes” – ask the car what the weather forecast is or to find you nearby restaurants among other amazing things. The car actually talks to you. On my trip to Wayne, I wanted to stop nearby after the sports trading card show I attended, and get some Cuban food. All I had to say was: “Hi Mercedes, find me some Cuban restaurants nearby.” It responded by offering up a comprehensive list of nearby restaurants featuring Cuban cuisine superimposed on my navigation screen. All I had to do was select one and I was on my way. Of course, all of this amazingness and luxury doesn’t come cheap. But, I am going to assume that if one is considering purchasing or leasing an E-Class sedan, they have the wherewithal to afford it. My 2021 E-450 4matic Sedan had a
p t t w p s base price of $62,000. With added optionss and destination and delivery, it carried ai f bottom line sticker price of $81,950. The long laundry list of options added ton my tester included (but wasn’t limited to):p $2,300 for the premium package; $1,950o for the driver assist package; $1,900 form the air body control air suspension system;i $1,620 for upgraded black leather; $1,300e for design black Piano lacquer interior trim; $1,320 for massaging mulit-contour front seats and $1,000 for 19-inch AMG twin spoke wheels. Of course you can save a few dollars by cutting back on the options. The E-class sedan is also offered up in the less expensive E350 model, featuring a four cylinder turbo charged engine. The base E350 rear wheel drive sedan carries a base price of $54,250, while the base price of the E350 4matic is offered at $56,750. The EPA fuel consumption ratings for the E450 4matic come in at an average of 26 miles per gallon – 30 on the highway and 23 in city driving. The new E450 4matic was not crash test rated yet under the government’s 5 star safety ratings. Peter Perrotta’s On The Road column appears regularly. He may be contacted at pperrotta@comcast.net

school aid and nearly $50 million in additional preschool funding, according to information provided by his office. When paired with additional investments in Extraordinary Special Aid and stabilization aid, the FY2022 budget increases school funding by $700 million, according to the governor’s office. School districts will be able to use state funds in conjunction with federal resources to address COVID-19 related learning loss, for stand-up mental health programs, to train educators and to remediate buildings, among other uses, according to the governor’s office. According to Murphy, the FY2022 budget proposal continues a seven-year phasein to fully fund New Jersey’s school funding formula. However, in order to accomplish the goal of fully funding New Jersey’s school funding formula, the formula has been taking state aid away from some school districts and adding state aid to other school districts. The pattern is scheduled to continue for another three years, according to state officials. The governor’s FY2022 budget proposal includes $750,000 for minority teacher development grants and $550,000 to encourage retention and diversification within the teaching profession; the appropriation for nursing services in nonpublic schools will increase by $1.5 million, while state funding for the nonpublic technology initiative will be restored at $5.4 million; funding for auxiliary services provided to nonpublic school students, such as compensatory education and English as a Second Language services, will increase by $1 million; and an additional $974.4 million in pension and benefits to support retired educators.
