Old Bridge officials remember 150 residents who lost their lives By KATHY CHANG Staff Writer

M

ayor Owen Henry and members of the Township Council lit candles and stood at silence for 150 seconds to remember those residents who have died to date in the township due to the novel coronavirus pandemic. Fifteen empty chairs in council chambers were illuminated during a council meeting on March 9. Each chair reflected 10 residents who have passed away since March 2020. Also, empty chairs were symbolically placed on the Municipal Complex lawn behind the public library to honor the residents. A lit candle was set on each chair and a “Deep in our Hearts” floral arrangement remained lit until March 10. “As residents pass by, I ask all to remember that each empty chair reflects a lost life,” Henry said, adding unfortunately as time goes on, more chairs will be added.

“The grief and suffering of this loss must be recognized. Let us keep in minds the families who are unable to properly mourn the loss of their loved ones and those who weren’t able to get the proper deserving sendoff.”

Township officials held the memorial service as the one-year mark approaches since the first recorded COVID related death in Old Bridge. “This is a somber part of history we will never forget,” Henry said. “It’s going to be recorded as some of the most difficult times this nation has faced and these times have been filled with grief and sadness.” As of March 10, officials reported 200 new positive COVID-19 cases over a seven-day period, which brings the total number of cases in the township to 6,014. The seven-day period was from March 3-9. Henry urged residents to stay safe and continue to do their part in preventing the spread of the virus. Residents can view the ceremony live on OBTV and Youtube. Old Bridge will soon begin efforts to determine a permanent COVID-19 Memorial within the township.

school budget introduced; state aid increases by $4M By MATTHEW SOCKOL Staff Writer

T

he Sayreville School District Board of Education has introduced a $119.8 million budget that will fund the operation of the district during the 2020-21 school year. Following a discussion among district administrators and board members, the budget was introduced on March 2. A public hearing is scheduled for May 4. The budget, which may be revised until that time, may be adopted by the board following the public hearing. The budget will be supported by a tax levy of $69.2 million to be paid by the borough’s residential and commercial property owners. Other revenue includes $1.67 million from the district’s surplus fund (savings). The district’s 2020-21 budget had a school tax rate of $2.9596 per $100 of assessed valuation. The average home in the borough was assessed at $145,024. The owner of that home paid about $4,292 in school taxes. For 2021-22, the school tax rate is projected to increase to $3.0080 per $100 of assessed valuation. The average home in the borough is estimated to be assessed at $146,015. The owner of that home will pay about $4,392 in school taxes, an increase of $100. Individuals pay more or less in taxes depending on the assessed value of their home and/or property. School taxes are one component of a property owner’s tax bill, which also includes Middlesex County taxes and Sayreville municipal taxes. The $108.4 million budget adopted by the board for the 2020-21 school year was supported by a tax levy of $68 million and the receipt of $29.1 million in state aid. For the 2021-22 school year, Sayreville is intended receive $33.2 million in state aid, an increase of $4.16 million. The school district’s state aid has increased (Continued on page 3)

Budget each year since the enactment of state legislation known as S-2 in 2018. Sayreville was originally slated to receive $31.4 million in state aid for 2020-21 last year, but the amount was decreased to $29.1 million because of the financial impact of the coronavirus pandemic on New Jersey. After the budget was introduced, Superintendent of Schools Richard Labbe said, “We were thrilled to recently learn that the state reinstated the state aid that they took from us last summer due to the pandemic, while also continuing to provide us with additional equalization aid. We will utilize these additional funds to expand our academic programs, especially our STEM [science, technology, engineering, mathematics] Learning Academy at SWMHS [Sayreville War Memorial High School] and to accelerate the learning loss of our students due to the pandemic. “We will also use it to continue to improve our technology infrastructure and to purchase additional one to one educational devices,” he continued. “Finally, we will use the additional state funding to continue the refurbishment and renovation of our facilities and to expand school security in the evening at all our schools.”

Advantages of Contact Lenses If you are tired of wearing bulky glasses or your glasses constantly fog up, consider switching to contact lenses. They are a great alternative that provide all day moisture while allowing you independence from your traditional glasses. Contact lenses sit directly on the eye so they increase peripheral vision. Many people feel more comfortable doing sports and exercising in contact lenses than they do while wearing glasses. Contact lens technology has drastically developed over the years to help provide patients comfort and great vision all day long. Contact lenses come in dailies, biweekly, or monthly wear options. You can be fit for contacts solely for distance or with multifocals for both distance and reading. Colored contact lenses can give you the eye color you’ve always wanted. The vision opportunities are endless! Middlesex County mourns loss of Freeholder Valenti, a trailblazer for Latinx in politics By JENNIFER AMATO Managing Editor

M

essages of support are pouring in for the family of Blanquita (Bird) Valenti, a longtime Middlesex County Freeholder and New Brunswick City Councilmember. “It is with great sadness that we learned of the passing of a colleague and friend, former Freeholder Blanquita Valenti. Blanquita was an inspiration across the county, particularly for those in the minority community, as she not only shattered convention by becoming the first Latina to win a countywide election in Middlesex County, but she founded one of the county’s most active human services organizations, the Puerto Rican Action Board (PRAB). A mother and grandmother, Blanquita’s love for the youngest in our community was reflected in her career, spending almost four decades as an educator in both high school and university settings,” the Middlesex County Board of Commissioners, which was previously named the Middlesex County Board of Chosen Freeholders, released in a statement on March 10. “Each of our lives are made greater to have known and served on the board with Blanquita and for those of us that benefitted from her mentorship. Her kindness was a signature, felt deeply by those who had the privilege to spend time with her, and she leaves behind a rich legacy of change driven by her service. Our thoughts are with Blanquita’s loved ones at this time. We hope they find peace in remembering the countless ways Blanquita touched and transformed the community she loved so much.” Valenti passed away on March 9 at age 87 at her home in New Brunswick. Born in Santurce, Puerto Rico, to the late Esteban A. and Blanca (Sanchidrian) Bird, she graduated from Rosemont College in Pennsylvania, according to her obituary provided by Selover Funeral

Blanquita Valenti

Home in North Brunswick. She taught Spanish at John F. Kennedy High School in Woodbridge for 32 years before her retirement. She earned a master’s degree in teaching from Seton Hall University and in Spanish and Latin American literature from Rutgers University. She served on the board of directors for Saint Peter’s University Hospital and Middlesex County College and was a founding and charter member of the Puerto Rican Action Board and a founding member of ASPIRA, Inc. of New Jersey. Among her many accolades, she was named “Woman of the Year” by the New Brunswick Sister Cities Association. She helped achieve non-homelessness for veterans, was named “Who’s Who” for advancing the culture of the Latino American Business Community and was honored in a joint resolution of the NJ State Senate

and General Assembly paying tribute to her meritorious record of service, leadership and commitment, according to her obituary. Valenti served on the Middlesex County Board of Chosen Freeholders for 15 years, from 2004 to Dec. 31, 2019; and the New Brunswick City Council from 1990 to 2010, the first Latino City resident to do so, and was chosen by her fellow council members to serve as council president and council vice president, according to information provided by the City of New Brunswick. She was also the first Latina woman to serve on the New Brunswick Board of Education and additionally served on the New Brunswick Planning Board from 1996 to 2005, according to the statement. Valenti’s late husband, Carl, an attorney and former City Commissioner, served many years on the New Brunswick Free Public Library Board of Trustees. In 2008, the library dedicated the Carl T. Valenti Community Room in recognition of his service to New Brunswick, according to the statement. Assembly Speaker Craig J. Coughlin (D-Middlesex) released a statement saying, “Blanquita Valenti was a dedicated public servant and historic trailblazer. After shattering glass ceilings for the Latinx community across Middlesex County, she devoted her time to bettering local schools, advocating for seniors, veterans and people with disabilities, and improving quality of life for families. “She will be remembered for her compassion, her determination and her unwavering commitment to her community. Middlesex County is better for her efforts, and we are forever grateful for her service.” Assemblywoman Yvonne Lopez (D-19) released a statement saying, “Blanquita’s legacy as an elected official will endure as she embodied what all elected officials aspire to be. She was thoughtful, compassionate, and above all else community-

minded. Blanquita worked tirelessly every day on behalf of the residents of Middlesex County and her voice will certainly be missed. She will continue to inspire me, and I am forever grateful for her friendship and service.” U.S. Senator Bob Menendez (D-NJ) commented in a statement, saying, “It is with deep sadness that we mourn the loss of former Freeholder Blanquita Valenti. She was the first Latina to serve on the Middlesex County Board of Chosen Freeholders, a champion for children and a gentle lady with an iron will. In her 15 years on the board, Blanquita helped create programs and services to support children, older adults and people living with disabilities, provide more affordable housing and tackle veterans’ homelessness in the county. Her four decades of public service included more than 30 years as an educator, positions on several community boards and organizations in New Brunswick and throughout Central Jersey, and as an advocate on issues affecting the Latino community. Blanquita has left her mark and will be sorely missed. I express my sincere condolences to her family and all those whose lives have been impacted by her work and leadership.” Visitation was held March 12 at Selover Funeral Home in North Brunswick. Funeral services were March 13 from Selover Funeral Home, followed by a Mass at St. Mary of Mt. Virgin Church in New Brunswick. Entombment followed in St. Peter’s Cemetery in New Brunswick. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to Supportive Services for Veteran’s Families at www.communityhope-nj. org or to Women Aware, 250 Livingston Ave., New Brunswick 08901 or to the New Brunswick Public Library, 60 Livingston Ave., New Brunswick 08901. “She will be remembered for her compassion, her determination and her unwavering commitment to her community. Middlesex County is better for her efforts, and we are forever grateful for her service.” — Assembly Speaker Craig J. Coughlin (D-Middlesex)

Forklift training program offered to county high school seniors

M

echanically inclined high school seniors in Middlesex County are being offered an opportunity to get a head start on a lucrative career as forklift technicians. The free pilot program, spearheaded by the Middlesex County Vocational and Technical Schools, will offer certification and potential entry into an apprentice program after six months or less of virtual and hands-on instruction. Partners in the effort are the Manufacturing Skills Standards Council and the Material Handling Equipment Distributors Association. “This is a very exciting program that’s new to us,” said Sean McDonald, MCVTS director of career and technical education. “The ideal candidate is someone who has mechanical skills, is good at problem-solving, and has had some introduction to tools. This might be done in a student’s free time, in the evenings, on the weekends.” As many as 300 positions are available in New Jersey, which is a hub for the logistics and distribution industries, where forklifts are essential to handling and moving materials. Most technician salaries range from $37,000 to $65,000 with full benefits

and overtime opportunities. All senior students across Middlesex County are eligible for the program, recent graduates and out-of-school youth will also be considered for entry into the pilot class. Training will commence online in March and run through June. The curriculum will include 55 hours of forklift e-learning, 10 hours of online OSHA safety instruction, and up to 15 hours of hands-on/eyes-on learning at our MCVTS Piscataway campus, followed by testing. Instruction will be in such areas as servicing and maintaining forklifts or other industrial machines, tool maintenance, utilizing diagnostic equipment, communications with salespeople, and tracking inventory. Employer partnerships include Eastern Lift Truck Co. in Piscataway, AJ Jersey Inc. in South Plainfield, Liftec Forklifts in South Plainfield and other local manufactures and distribution centers. Applications are available online at www.mcvts.net, click on “District Administration” and then “Career and Technical Education.” This information was provided by Middlesex County Vocational Schools.

It also features a wealth of never-beforeseen footage, audio tapes and personal photos, telling a deep and absorbing story

A&E Network’s hit non-fiction series Nightwatch returns for a new season following the skilled first responders on the front lines of one of America’s most dynamic agencies, the New Orleans EMS. From Executive Producer Dick Wolf, the new season will premiere Thursday, March 25, at 10 p.m. ET/PT. Each onehour episode chronicles the sacrifice and heroic work of the first responders in New Orleans, a singular city filled with rich culture and a vibrant community. This season, the robust team of EMTs and EMS paramedics embrace new partners and roles as they respond to everything from medical emergencies to on the street violence to natural disasters. Zoey’s Extraordinary Playlist returns

from hiatus, moving to Sundays starting March 28, from 9 to 10 p.m. ET/PT on NBC. Following a tragedy, Zoey (Jane Levy) and the Clarke family have begun to recalibrate and navigate their new normal. Zoey’s musical powers will continue to both awkwardly complicate and inform her worldview as she attempts to rediscover joy and connect with those around her. TBS will premiere its newly re-imagined format of the extreme obstacle course series, Wipeout, on Thursday, April 1, at 9 p.m. ET.PT.
