he Middlesex County Board of County Commissioners, New Jersey Republicans representing the Township of Old Bridge, and Old Bridge Mayor Owen Henry have issued statements vehemently condemning a racist email sent to Ward 3 Councilwoman Edina Brown. Brown, one of two Democrats on the Township Council and the only member of color on the dais, received the letter on March 7. She began her first term in 2018. A member of the public read in full the email at a Township Council meeting on March 9, which called Brown a “whining” derogatory name, and the email continued using the derogatory name referring to Black people and was not sure how Brown was elected to a position in a Republican township. Brown, who does not know who sent the email, forwarded the email to the mayor and township police. Township Attorney Mark Roselli said the the township police department and the Middlesex County Prosecutor’s Office are investigating the email. The public information officer for the Middlesex County Prosecutor’s Office said they “can neither confirm nor deny the existence of an investigation or the lack thereof.” During recent council meetings, Brown has expressed concerns about feeling threatened from other members on the dais. She did not appear in person at a council meeting on March 23 because she was told she was not allowed to bring her own security to the meeting. (Continued on page 3)

County, local leaders condemn racist email sent to Old Bridge official (Continued from page 1)

Members of the Middlesex County Board of County Commissioners said in a statement, “We are appalled by the recent message received by Old Bridge Councilwoman Edina Brown. “We vehemently condemn the sentiments and vile language expressed in that message,” the commissioners said. “Racist and threatening rhetoric has no place in Old Bridge, our county, or our country, not now, not ever. We stand by Councilwoman Brown, and all others who have had to face direct bias attacks. The brazen, xenopho-

bic and cowardly actions of close-minded individuals do not define the diverse and inclusive residents of Middlesex County. This incident has been referred to the Middlesex County Prosecutor’s Office for investigation.” State GOP lawmakers representing the township also condemned the racist email. “The fact that there is this sort of hate based on race is disgraceful,” said state Sen. Samuel Thompson (R-12), who lives in Old Bridge. “Diversity is something to be proud of because it has endured despite attacks from people who can’t see past skin

color or ethnicity.” Assemblyman Rob Clifton (R-12) said “the person who sent this email is hiding because they know what they did is categorically wrong and appalling. “This coward should be found and prosecuted,” he said. Assemblyman Ron Dancer (R-12) said “regardless of political party, we must condemn racism in all form. “Republicans are the party of Lincoln, the party that fought for freedom for all,” he said. Henry said “any speech, whether writ-

ten or spoken, in which any type of racial epithet or slur is included, is unacceptable, inappropriate and condemnable. “I immediately instructed that all warranted resources be committed to identify the author or group responsible for composing and sending such an offensive document,” he said. “Additionally, I have requested that appropriate outside law enforcement agencies be contacted to assist as required. Given that this is an open and continuing investigation, I am not at liberty to discuss details of the investigation and/ or matters related to it.”

U Text. U Drive. U Pay. campaign underway during April

L

aw enforcement officers will be cracking down on distracted drivers during April as part of New Jersey’s UDrive. UText. UPay. campaign. Through the entire month, the high visibility law enforcement initiative will target motorists who engage in dangerous distracted driving behaviors such as talking on hand-held cell phones and sending text messages while driving. The National Highway Traffic Safety

Administration reports that in 2018 alone, 2,841 people were killed in distracted driving crashes on our nation’s roads and an estimated 400,000 people were injured. In New Jersey, driver inattention was listed as a contributing circumstance in 50% of the state’s crashes in 2018. Driver inattention was in fact listed as a contributing factor in crashes at a rate seven times higher than that of the next highest contributing factor (speed).

Distracted driving is any activity that diverts attention from driving, including talking or texting on your phone, eating and drinking, talking to people in your vehicle, fiddling with the stereo, entertainment or navigation system — anything that takes your attention away from the task of safe driving. Texting is the most alarming distraction. Sending or reading a text takes your eyes off the road for five seconds, accord-

ing to state officials. At 55 mph, that’s like driving the length of an entire football field with your eyes closed. New Jersey is one of eight states nationally to receive dedicated federal funds this year to tackle the issue of driver distraction. This federal funding will be used for police overtime enforcement grants at the local level as well as a statewide multimedia public awareness campaign on this important issue.

Middlesex County Commissioners’ deputy director passes away By JENNIFER AMATO Managing Editor

M

iddlesex County Commissioner Kenneth Armwood, who was serving as the deputy director of the Middlesex County Board of County Commissioners, has passed away at age 46. Armwood died on March 29. “It is with a heavy heart and great sadness that we share the news of the passing of our beloved and highly regarded deputy director, Kenneth Armwood. As a lifelong resident of Piscataway and a graduate of Rutgers University, Deputy Director Armwood was emblematic of Middlesex County – an advocate for all, and one we were incredibly proud to call a fellow county commissioner,” the Middlesex County Board of County Commissioners said in a statement. As a lifelong resident of Piscataway and a graduate of Rutgers University, Armwood’s public service began at age 19 when he was elected to the Piscataway Township Schools Board of Education. While on the school board, he served as a member of the Middlesex County Task Force on School Violence, which created an emergency response manual for schools throughout the county; it has since been used as the model for a state program, according to his biography listed on Middlesex County’s website. Armwood’s experience in government also includes his election to the Piscataway Township Council (200413), where he served as council president in 2008 and 2013. As a councilman, Armwood was involved in the renovation of Quibbletown Park, where the All Children’s Playground was designed for children with or without disabilities so they all can play together, according to his bio. Upon joining the Middlesex County Board of County Commissioners (formerly the Middlesex County Board of Chosen Freeholders) in March 2013, Armwood oversaw the county’s Business Innovation, Education and Opportunity Committee, which fosters economic, cultural, artistic and educational development. He was named the board’s deputy director in 2020. Armwood’s list of achievements included establishing the Annual Business Summit, bringing leaders into the county’s economic journey; overseeing the distribution of funding from Middlesex County’s Arts Trust Fund supporting one of his passions, the arts; driving the creation of online programs connecting employers, employees, residents and job-seekers, which included the launch of SkillUp; and advocating for education for all, developing programs tailored for individuals of all ages and for veterans, labor union apprenticeships, according to the statement from the commissioners. “Most recently, true to who he was, he championed the name change of our board to ensure our title is reflective of the community we serve – an inclusive, diverse peoples who represent the greatness of this county,” the statement reads.

Middlesex County Commissioner Kenneth Armwood, who is the deputy director, has passed away at age 46.

“His accomplishments were many, but what we will remember most of all is Kenneth Armwood’s friendship, kindness and the inspiration he gave us. He gave his all, always. He will be deeply missed. Our heartfelt condolences go out to his family, friends and the community that loved him during this difficult time,” the commissioners said. “Today we lost a dear friend and colleague on the Middlesex Board of Commissioners … such a sad day for all of us, may he Rest in Peace. He was a shining star and truly loved his job and loved to serve his community,” Commissioner Charles Tomaro wrote in a social media post. Armwood also worked for East Brunswick. “It is with great sadness that I must inform the residents, business community, municipal staff and the community at large of the passing of Kenny Armwood, the East Brunswick economic development officer. Kenny had become such an integral part of the township since assuming his position about a year ago. His big personality and warm disposition made him such a magnet for friends and strangers alike,” Mayor Brad Cohen said in a prepared statement. Cohen said Armwood had the biggest heart that touched many people around him. “For the township, he was just hitting his stride as he seemed to have found the perfect role for his talent and skills. I can safely say East Brunswick was certainly his second home after his native Piscataway,” Cohen said. “In his role as the deputy director for the Middlesex County Board of County Commissioners, he was able

on the web: www.centraljersey.com

to extend his reach beyond East Brunswick and even the county. Kenny truly lived and breathed the role and responsibility of a public servant,” the mayor said. Metuchen Mayor Jonathan Busch was one of the first political figures to post a tribute on Facebook at about 1 p.m. March 29. “I do not need to tell you that Kenny was an extraordinary man. Over the last couple of years, Metuchen came to know his warmth, energy, spirit and deep commitment to public service. The Kenny that Metuchen knew made sure representation mattered and spoke to every person who spoke to him like they were the most important in the room because they were,” Busch said. “Kenny was always an active participant in the borough’s efforts, including when he came by last weekend to show his support and solidarity with the AAPI community. “Kenny’s presence will be deeply missed throughout our community, but we are committed to continuing his legacy of leadership and inclusion in everything we do. So long friend, may your memory be a blessing,” Busch wrote in his post. “I first came to know Kenny when he worked at the Edison Job Corps. It was clear he was devoted to civil rights and helping under-served communities, ensuring the next generation could build a better future. My deepest condolences go out to his family and friends during this extremely difficult time. His dedication to our community left an indelible mark on Middlesex County,” Congressman Frank Pallone (D-NJ) said in a prepared statement. “I am heartbroken by the passing of Middlesex County Commissioner Kenneth Armwood. Starting in public service at age 19, Ken lived and breathed public service. He was a true champion for Middlesex County and he had so much still to do and give back. A huge loss for our state,” Gov. Phil Murphy said in a prepared statement. State Assemblywoman Yvonne Lopez (D-Middlesex) released a statement and said, “Commissioner Ken Armwood was the embodiment of the servant leader and a role model to elected officials at every level of office in both Middlesex County and throughout New Jersey. Ken’s passion, enthusiasm and dedication to helping his community was infectious and aided him in changing the lives of anyone who had the pleasure of knowing and working with him. “I will sorely miss Ken’s generosity, genuine friendship and tremendous leadership. May he rest in peace and may we all continue to aspire to the standard of excellence Ken Armwood put forward every single day,” Lopez said in the statement. Visitation was held April 2-3 at the Crabiel Home for Funerals, Milltown. A funeral service was held April 5 at the Piscataway High School football stadium. Burial was private at Lake Nelson Memorial Park, Piscataway. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the Kenneth Armwood Memorial Scholarship Fund, c/o 2 Pucillo Lane, Somerset, NJ 08873.

School rebrands as Middlesex College By KATHY CHANG Staff Writer

I

n efforts to spread the word of what all Middlesex College has to offer and help dispel the stigma of attending a community college, the college, in partnership with Middlesex County, officially unveiled its rebranding effort on March 23. Middlesex College, formerly Middlesex County College, announced its name change and move to rebrand earlier this year. The college’s Board of Trustees approved the name change in October 2020, which took effect Jan. 1. College President Mark McCormick, who said the process began in February 2020 right before the novel coronavirus pandemic, appeared with Middlesex County Commissioner Director Ronald G. Rios; (now late) Deputy Director Commissioner Kenneth Armwood; Dorothy K. Power, chairwoman of the Middlesex College Board of Trustees; and Kyle Anderson, a Middlesex College trustee and Middlesex County interim executive superintendent, in a Zoom press conference expounding on the college’s plans to further implement branding changes across campus and throughout the college’s identity on March 23. “Middlesex College offers high quality education that serves county residents and customize training and workforce development to area businesses,” McCormick said. “Our students transfer to every college/ university in New Jersey including Rutgers, Kean, New Jersey Institute of Technology, College of New Jersey and Princeton. “Our transfer partners report that Middlesex College graduates perform better than students who started the four-year institution in terms of grade point average and time for completion of a bachelor’s degree,” he said. However, McCormick said despite “amazing outcomes of our students, there are many in our community that remain unaware of what Middlesex College has to offer.”

“Even though our name has changed, our mission has not,” McCormick said. “Our mission remains to offer quality, affordable education for residents of Middlesex College and help our students thrive in education, growth and personal success. “For many students Middlesex College is the best choice in terms of affordability, transferability of credits, flexible scheduling, proximity, personalized attention and quality,” he said. Rios said in many ways Middlesex College’s new brand is an extension of the county’s own brand journey that began several years ago. “We both seek to attract new talent and opportunities to Middlesex County; in fact the county’s strategic plan and master economic roadmap known as Destination 2040 makes it clear that the success of Middlesex County and Middlesex College are intertwined in Destination 2040,” he said. Rios said the county’s financial investments with a collaboration project with Rutgers Cancer Institute of New Jersey, Robert Wood Johnson Barnabas Health, New Brunswick Development Corporation and New Brunswick of a freestanding comprehensive cancer pavilion will provide Middlesex College extraordinary opportunities including a pathway for oncology education. County officials announced the project in May 2020. “This will provide Middlesex College students exclusive access to educational curricula and content from a premier oncology center,” Rios said. “As we have seen here today, the new Middlesex College rebrand identity perfectly reflects the college’s onward unwavering dedication to its mission and every element from a new name to the new logo and even the new mascot reinforces the message that Middlesex College is a worthy first choice for perspective students just as Middlesex College is a top destination for residents and businesses. “Middlesex College is one of the many reasons Middlesex County is an excellent place to live work and play,” he said.

Armwood said they recognize Middlesex College as a key pipeline for the talent that will fuel local businesses and help the county achieve its strategic long-term economic development goals. “We know that many of today’s Middlesex College students will become the entrepreneurs, CEOs, essential workers and life-science experts of the businesses that will call Middlesex County home in the future,” he said. Power said the county’s flag motto – leading together – and the campus college’s motto – explore, grow, drive – are compatible. “Middlesex College has been an engine of growth,” she said. “We have almost 60,000 alumni and countless more have been taking non-credit classes for who have been trained in our workforce development program.” Anderson said going to college is not just about hard work in the classroom. “Middlesex College offers numerous extracurricular activities as well as [giving students] a chance to have fun, learn leadership skills, and participate in clubs and athletics,” Anderson said. “As a former athlete, football coach and Middlesex College student, I can tell you that the new brand is extremely important in creating school spirit and a sense of pride and camaraderie that propels student life and the athletic brand forward,” he said. Anderson said the college’s new athletics logo embodies the strength and pride of the Middlesex College Colts. “In addition to our logo, within a year we will be unveiling our new physical mascot,” he said. “Our colt will be named by online polls of Middlesex College students. [The mascot] will attend athletic events as well as select campus and community activities [and] will be be an integral part of our new rebrand.” Middlesex College will host a virtual open house from 10 a.m to 1:30 p.m. on April 18. Eye Test Has the Potential To Detect Heart Disease

At Atlantic Medical Eye Care we pride ourselves on having the very latest in ophthalmic equipment. The OCT or Optical Coherence Tomography machine is a remarkable tool in our arsenal, giving us the ability to give our patients the very best in eye care. With OCT (a 1-2 minute scan) the doctor can see each layer in the retina in significant detail. This technology is key to diagnosing and treating glaucoma, age-related macular degeneration (AMD), diabetic eye disease, and other disorders. Not only is the OCT a useful tool in eye care, it has the potential to assist doctors treating cardiovascular disease (a type of disease that affects the heart or blood vessels). Researchers at the University of California at San Diego have discovered a new marker that shows cardiovascular disease using an OCT scan. The investigators found that the decreased blood flow to the heart caused by heart disease may cause cells in the retina to die leaving a mark on the retina. They further explain that the OCT allows visualization of the smallest blood vessels in the body leading to early detection and prevention of serious events such as heart attack and stroke. Dr. Robert Scharfman is committed to excellence in patient care and compassion. He has served the community for over 25 years. Ask about our new evening and Saturday hours!

SPORTS Real Central NJ Soccer kicks off men’s season May 12

R

eal Central NJ Soccer’s (RCNJ) men’s schedule will kick off May 12 in the Mid-Atlantic division against in-state rivals the Ocean City Nor’Easters. The team then heads into Pennsylvania to play West Chester United Soccer Club on May 15. RCNJ will host last year’s national runner-up Reading United on June 16. The club’s matches will be played at the Mercer County Community College soccer complex in West Windsor, with kickoff times set for 7 pm. “We are thrilled to be preparing for our first season as a club,” men’s General Manager Ira Jersey said in a prepared state-

ment. “It’s exciting to think that our club might be the first event many families attend post-COVID. But we’ll follow all the state and local protocols to keep the environment safe as well as fun.” The club’s men’s team will play in USL League Two in the fourth tier of US Soccer. USL League Two is a national league and the leader in pre-professional soccer in North America. Most Major League Soccer college draft picks and many players in the two USL professional leagues were scouted during their time in the league, according to the statement. Other teams in the division include Philadelphia Lone Star FC, Lehigh Valley

United and Northern Virginia’s Evergreen FC. “We’re in one of the league’s more competitive divisions,” Coach Patrick Snyder said in the statement. “We’ll face strong clubs with rich histories in the sport. But we’ve put together an exciting squad made up of some great local talent; including some guys I’ve watched for years.” The top two teams in the division will face off against others in the Eastern Conference for League playoffs in late July. The single-elimination knockout tournament then culminates in the national championship match on July 31. The club has already announced 10

players including many local standouts. Three players are vying for Haitian or New Zealand youth international team spots. The club’s men’s team roster has been fully committed and additional announcements will be made through the opening matchday, according to the statement. The club’s women’s program will play in the Women’s Premier Soccer League (WPSL) and will announce its schedule shortly. Tittel, advocate for N.J. environmental causes, to retire

J

eff Tittel, the director of the Sierra Club’s New Jersey Chapter, has announced he will retire as of May 1. According to a press release, Tittel has been involved in every major piece of environmental legislation that has been passed in New Jersey since 1998. Tittel worked for the passage of the following legislation: • Saving Sterling Forest – This 25-year battle resulted in one of the most significant open space victories in the nation. Ultimately, 20,000 acres of forest were saved in one of the largest coalitions of environmental groups and government entities ever assembled; • The New Jersey Highlands Act – 2004: The Highlands Water Protection and Planning Act is a landmark piece of legislation that put critical protections in place for one of New Jersey’s most environmentally sensitive and ecologically important areas; • New Jersey’s Clean Car Program – 2004: Sometimes characterized as New Jersey’s “first major climate response bill,” the program brings New Jersey in line with California’s automobile emissions requirements, which are the strictest in the nation;

• Global Warming Response Act – 2007, updated 2019: Under this law, the New Jersey Department of Environmental Protection must assess the state’s greenhouse gas emissions, and find ways to reduce emissions by 80% by 2050; • Plastic bag ban – New Jersey’s bill is one of the most comprehensive in the country; • Banning fracking in the Delaware River Basin – this recent ruling by the Delaware River Basin Commission was lauded by environmental groups across the country. Tittel worked closely with the Delaware Riverkeeper Network and the Water Defenders on the campaign that resulted in this decision. “I would like to thank everyone who I had the pleasure of working with over the years as New Jersey Sierra Club’s director and the accomplishments we made together,” Tittel was quoted as saying in the press release. “You have been part of my extended family and I will miss our camaraderie. We worked from one end of New Jersey to the other and everywhere in between, whether it was working to protect the Pinelands,

cleaning up toxic sites, protecting our parks, reducing climate change impacts, saving open space in the Highlands, protecting our clean water and more. “Moving on was a hard decision. However, given that I have spent 51 years as an environmental activist and almost 23 years as the New Jersey chapter director, I felt it was time to make a change,” Tittel said. Rich Isaac, chair of the Sierra Club’s New Jersey Chapter, said, “Jeff has worked tirelessly in Trenton working to protect our state’s clean air, water and soil, to fight for the rights of people living in overburdened communities and to combat climate change. He will leave some very big shoes to fill.” Congressman Frank Pallone (D-NJ) said Tittel “knows more about environmental issues on the state and federal levels than anyone I know.” New Jersey State Senate Majority Leader Loretta Weinberg (D-Bergen) said, “It is hard to imagine the Sierra Club without Jeff Tittel. He was never shy, never retiring, never someone who is afraid to fight for the values of the Sierra Club, as well as his own.

“He has contributed mightily to a cleaner environment for me and for all the generations who come after us. His leadership will be missed, but I know he has built an organization that will continue to fight for a better, cleaner future,” Weinberg said. Matt Smith, New Jersey director of Food and Water Watch, said, “Nobody has a better handle on New Jersey environmental policy than Jeff Tittel. And like the great basketball guards of the modern game, Jeff understands you need a strong inside and outside game to excel. “With his leadership, the New Jersey Sierra Club organized a powerful network of volunteer groups in every region of the state. And unlike some contemporaries who rely on expensive lobbying and slick public relations campaigns, Jeff has consistently paired his policy expertise and political savvy with a deep commitment to grassroots organizing,” Smith said. Tittel co-founded Empower NJ, a 120plus member coalition that is working to stop new fossil fuel infrastructure projects in New Jersey, according to the press release.

six world records in his age group. When Raffone heard that Official Celebrity Boxing was staging a boxing event at the Showboat Hotel in Atlantic City, he reached out to its founder/CEO, Damon Feldman. Feldman, who also has a young son, was touched by Raffone’s story. He offered an opportunity to box on the undercard of a match between former NBA star Lamar Odom and singer Aaron Carter, which would help raise awareness of Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy. And Raffone quickly accepted. “This match offers an opportunity to increase awareness of this deadly childhood disease,” Raffone says. “And, because of COVID-19, we have to take advantage of every opportunity.” So, on June 12 at the Showboat Hotel, Raffone goes against Tommy “The Tiger” Moose, on the same boxing program with Lamar Odom and Aaron Carter. Raffone is currently training with professional boxer/ trainer Imamu Mayfield at the latter’s Freehold Boxing & Fitness. Mayfield says Raffone already has the tools for success in the ring and is progressing nicely. “For one thing, he has a burning motivation to help these kids,” Mayfield says. “He’s already an athlete, with world records. He’s been training hard. And he’s a big man…with a very big heart.” Tickets are available at james@jarofhope.org
