Outreach to residents remains at a distance at Reformed Church Home By KATHY CHANG Staff Writer

Lori Chonko, left, of Hazlet, and her sister Kathy Roszkowski, of Bayonne, surprised their mother, Reformed Church Home resident Mary Stanul, right, with a visit through the patio windows at the end of March.

t Reformed Church Home (RCH) in Old Bridge, the philosophy has always been to treat “residents and staff like family, to be transparent, and to put their safety and health first.” And the philosophy continues as the state continues to express concerns and set guidelines for long-term care facilities in the midst of the global novel coronavirus pandemic, which has become a problem across the country. “In light of the extreme challenges we are presented with during this outbreak, we are doing our very best to follow all guidelines, tend not only to residents’ physical/ medical needs, but also to their need for emotional support and comfort, communicate to families with transparency and honesty, and keep our very dedicated staff both safe and motivated,” said Andrea Walls, director of marketing at RCH. “We have even started an Employee Apprecia-

tion Fund, which families and local businesses have contributed to with monetary donations and gift card donations to provide food for all shifts. It has truly been an enormous team effort in the most difficult of circumstances.” Since March 6, the New Jersey Department of Health has issued 18 orders or guidelines for long-term care facilities, which include three state veterans memorial homes, to follow in the midst of the COVID-19 outbreak. The orders and guidelines include curbing outside visitation, allowing facilities to hire out-of-state certified nursing assistants to supplement staff, notifying residents’ families and staff of COVID-19 outbreaks in facilities, universal masking, having the necessary personal protective equipment (PPE) needed, and most recently, prohibiting admissions for facilities that cannot cohort and maintain appropriate infection prevention restrictions. Sayreville War Memorial graduate appointed to borough’s school board By MATTHEW SOCKOL Staff Writer

anielle Pieloch has joined the Sayreville School District Board of Education to serve the remainder of

2020. Board members appointed Pieloch on April 7 after interviewing Zoe Katsilis, Michael Macagnone, Nikasha Neat, Bryan Pena, Hitesh Shah, Julie Veloz and Jessica Wojtaszek for the position. Each candidate was given five minutes to discuss why they were qualified to serve on the Board of Education, which was broadcast during a livestream of the meeting. Pieloch works at RWJBarnabas as a

corporate director, overseeing patient access for the health system, and teaches at Rutgers University in the health administration program. She graduated from Sayreville War Memorial High School in 1998 and studied public health at Rutgers before earning a master’s degree specializing in health systems. Two of her three children currently attend the district, one at the Sayreville Middle School and one at the Samsel Upper Elementary School, according to information she stated during the meeting. “I’m really excited about the opportunity to serve my town in the capacity of a board member,” Pieloch said. “This town has provided many opportunities for my-

self and my family and I’d be honored to pay back with my service. I truly feel that the success that I have had in my career and my personal life really stems from the experience that I had in Sayreville, not just in the classroom, but also all of the extracurricular activities throughout the course of my career as a student in town. “I do feel that many of my skills that I use on a daily basis through the course of my job make me a great candidate for our Board of Education,” she continued. “First, I’m a collaborative leader who works well in a team setting. I understand that each of us on the board would bring a unique perspective and as a team member, it would be my job to hear other points of view and

to work to build consensus. Our overall output as it relates to policy should be a reflection of the input of every member and I will work with the community, school, staff and other stakeholders, and rather than imposing rules from above, I would work to demonstrate that we value the input of all. That being said, I recognize that this role will require making hard decisions where not all stakeholders would necessarily get their way. “I have the ability to do administrative tasks such as understanding and developing complex budgets. Through the course of my job, I manage scarce resources. I

Middlesex County has access CytoSorbents authorized to use therapy in patients with COVID to saliva test for COVID-19

M

iddlesex County, in partnership with RUCDR Infinite Biologics, RWJBarnabas Health and Accurate Diagnostic Labs, are on the forefront of innovation in the fight against COVID-19, offering for the first-time a saliva-based test to the community on a mass scale. Introduced recently by RUCDR and ADL, this saliva test, newly approved by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA), is a breakthrough that will accelerate not only the volume of testing per day but provide results in 24-48 hours, according to information provided by Middlesex County. Starting April 15, Middlesex County will be the first county government in New Jersey to provide this new test widely in a drive-through setting and at no cost to local first responders and residents. “We are proud of our deep partnerships with RUCDR and Accurate Labs as well as RWJBarnabas Health, who have been on the frontline of this fight against COVID-19 in New Jersey. Middlesex County has built the operations and infrastructure from the ground up to enable us to utilize our extensive partnerships to provide innovative solutions to our community of first responders and residents. Thankfully we have a rare advantage in such a critical time to be able to rapidly deploy increased testing capabilities and accelerated results, while protecting our frontline workers,” Middlesex County Freeholder Director Ronald G. Rios said in the statement. “We believe our stateof-the-art drive-thru model can set a benchmark for testing that can benefit the state and other counties, as we all look for ways to better safeguard our communities in this crisis.” “As the world faces a dire shortage in testing supplies, RUCDR is bringing forth a game-changing response to dramatically increase testing of patients, offering both time and cost efficiencies. With this breakthrough, we have the ability to track and trace infected individuals faster, ultimately mitigating the spread of COVID-19. Moreover, the sheer volume of specimens to be collected will aid in the development of a vaccine and new therapies. For this reason, our partnership with Middlesex County is pivotal for our ongoing research as mass testing

via a drive-thru setting will generate the samples that will provide more accurate and timely information in curtailing the spread of COVID-19,” Andrew Brooks, PhD, COO and director of technology development for RUCDR, said in the statement. The new saliva test developed by RUCDR and Accurate Diagnostic Labs has several significant advantages over the nasal or throat swab test, which include: 100% accuracy in predicting the presence of SARS-CoV2 COVID-19 when compared to currently available swab testing, a simple method of collection (spit and seal), less personal protection equipment required for collection, expedited test results (24-48 hours), reduced exposure and risk to healthcare personnel, high through-put of specimens (up to 10,000 per day), improved staffing requirements as multiple types of healthcare professionals can be used for supervised sample collection, and non-invasive pain-free procedure for sample collection, according to the statement. “Accurate Diagnostic’s capabilities, steeped in a tradition of offering the latest diagnostic technology offerings, is proud to expand our relationship with a local, world-renowned institution in RUCDR Infinite Biologics and now with our own local government, Middlesex County. Together we can deliver the necessary COVID-19 testing at a much broader scale throughout the County, particularly to our front-line health care workers, first responders, and residents by utilizing these new collection and testing methods,” Accurate Diagnostic Labs CEO Rupen Patel said in the statement. “RWJBarnabas Health continues to work with our partners at Rutgers University and with Middlesex County government, as we are all searching for pioneering solutions to help combat the COVID-19 disease. In this context, we are pleased to be the first health system to receive and deploy the new salivabased test innovated by RUCDR in partnership with ADL. This advance will directly benefit our greater community that will now be able to access faster and more accurate testing results, to bring us (Continued on page 7)

ytoSorbents Corporation, a critical care immunotherapy leader commercializing its CytoSorb blood purification technology to treat cytokine storm and deadly inflammation in critically-ill and cardiac surgery patients around the world, announced the United States Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has granted Emergency Use Authorization (EUA) of CytoSorb for use in patients with COVID-19 infection. Under the EUA, CytoSorbents can make CytoSorb available, through commercial sales, to all hospitals in the United States for use in patients, 18 years of age or older, with confirmed COVID-19 infection who are admitted to the intensive care unit (ICU) with confirmed or imminent respiratory failure who have early acute lung injury or acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS), severe disease, or life-threatening illness resulting in respiratory failure, septic shock, and/or multiple organ dysfunction or failure, according to information provided by the company on April 13. Patients with COVID-19 infection often exhibit a cytokine storm with severe hyperinflammation that can contribute to worsened injury to vital organs like the lungs, heart and the kidneys. The goal of CytoSorb therapy is to reduce cytokine storm and the deadly inflammatory response through blood purification so that this injury may be mitigated or prevented. CytoSorb is plug-and-play compatible with the most commonly used blood purification machines or pumps in the intensive care unit used to treat COVID-19 patients, including hemoperfusion, hemodialysis, continuous renal replacement therapy (CRRT), and extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO) machines, according to the statement. “We greatly appreciate the FDA’s recognition, through this EUA, of the potential of CytoSorb and extracorporeal blood purification to help patients stricken with this terrible illness. It was clear in this truly collaborative process with the FDA, that the agency was committed to urgently

providing physicians and patients with new treatment options in the fight against COVID-19. We plan to continue working with the FDA to help as many patients as possible,” Vincent Capponi, chief operating officer of CytoSorbents, said in the statement. “As a U.S. based company with CytoSorb device manufacturing in New Jersey, we are eager to expand the availability of CytoSorb to U.S. hospitals and patients as a treatment option to fight cytokine storm and deadly inflammation that is believed to exacerbate COVID-19 infection. With more than 555,000 documented coronavirus infections, the U.S. leads the world with over 22,000 deaths, and emergently needs new therapies to reduce the severity of this disease. This is important not just to reduce poor clinical outcomes and mortality, but to also alleviate the bottleneck for scarce resources such as ventilators and ECMO in the treatment of these critically-ill patients,” Dr. Phillip Chan, PhD, chief executive officer of CytoSorbents, said in the statement. “CytoSorb has been used in critically-ill and cardiac surgery patients in more than 80,000 human treatments abroad, to help treat the same complications seen in COVID-19 patients such as lung failure, shock and multi-organ failure. With CRRT, and in many cases ECMO, being standard in ICUs worldwide, CytoSorb can be easily implemented with minimal training. More than 200 COVID-19 patients have been treated with CytoSorb outside the U.S., resulting in the inclusion of CytoSorb into the COVID-19 treatment guidelines in Italy, Panama and China. We have now received more than 70 requests from major U.S. hospitals to use CytoSorb in COVID-19 patients. Under the EUA, we plan to ramp the availability of CytoSorb in a controlled manner, to clinical centers that will work with us to generate data and leverage our knowledge of how to use the device most effectively. We are pleased to collaborate with the FDA to make this possible.”

According to the EUA letter from the FDA, “There are no FDA approved, licensed or cleared device treatments for COVID-19. Based on bench performance testing and reported clinical experience, FDA has concluded that the CytoSorb device

may be effective at treating certain patients with confirmed COVID-19 by removing various pro-inflammatory cytokines from their blood. FDA believes, based on the totality of scientific evidence available, that the removal of pro-inflammatory cytokines may ameliorate cytokine storm due to the overabundance of pro-inflammatory cytokines and, in turn, provide clinical benefit,” adding that “It is reasonable to believe

There is a total of 324 long-term care facilities in the state with positive COVID-19 cases. Currently, 123 facilities are prohibited to admit new residents, state officials said. Commissioner Judith M. Persichilli of the New Jersey State Department of Health states the number of cases and deaths of the long-term care facilities at the state’s daily press conferences. The number of cases and deaths continue to rise. As of April 15, a total of 5,945 positive COVID-19 cases have been reported throughout the state. “The overall population of long-term care facilities and assisted living is probably over 60,000, Persichilli said with 10% of the population affected by COVID-19. The commissioner said she reads through every incoming inquiry, complaint and concern. “If we get a complaint or concern that really sounds like that shouldn’t be happening, somebody goes out, she said, noting they rely heavily on local health officers. “They are the unsung heroes as well. They are taking care of their municipalities. The state is working with long-term care health care providers, who have the ability to cohort residents and have the necessary PPE required. Some 300 beds are available at facilities for individuals in hospital beds awaiting nursing home placement. “We have worked with the Department of Human Services to develop an enhanced reimbursement plan for facilities that are open and admitting patients so they are able to maintain the infection prevention restrictions and have the financial foundation to purchase PPE and pay their employees, Persichilli said. RCH provides assisted living, rehabilitation, long-term nursing care and respite care services in Old Bridge. It celebrated 20 years at its Old Bridge facility in 2018. Walls said at RCH, administrators review and implement all state, federal and Middlesex County Department of Health guidelines to the very best of their ability as communications are received. They communicate daily with the Middlesex County Health Department to provide updates. Through state and county guidelines, RCH must notify residents, staff and family members whenever a case of COVID-19 is diagnosed in a resident or staff member or there is a person under investigation for suspected illness. Each resident’s emergency contact must be called via phone with the information, followed up in writing, Walls said. “Note that we use email communications almost daily to keep families updated

April 22, 2020A

on our status, and to share photos or news on loved ones, she said. “Our email list includes the primary emergency contact plus any other family member that the emergency contact directs us to add to the list. RCH currently has 125 residents with two confirmed positive cases in assisted living, zero confirmed positive cases in skilled nursing, zero deaths due to COVID-19 and four staff positive cases, who were quarantined at home, as of press time on April 15. The facility closed its doors to visitors on March 13, including family members. Only staff, essential medical personnel and essential vendors – such as heating, ventilation and air conditioning system repair – are allowed in the building; all staff are screened daily with temperature checks and screening questions before each shift, which is logged daily for each staff member; and staff are instructed and encouraged to stay home if they have any COVID-19 symptoms at all. Staff with emerging symptoms while at work must be immediately sent home. Temperature for essential medical personnel and vendors are also taken and they are asked to complete a screening questionnaire before entry, RCH officials said. Nursing home residents’ temperatures are taken on each shift, monitored for any symptoms, and the information is recorded in the resident’s chart. All staff are required to wear masks. Gowns and gloves are reserved for medical and nursing staff, and for some activities’ staff as required. RCH works with the Old Bridge Office of Emergency Management regarding PPE inventory and needs. Residents are reminded to maintain social distancing. Staff has been in-serviced and residents have been instructed on proper hand washing techniques and hand hygiene. RCH installed hand sanitizer dispensers in each skilled nursing room and throughout the hallways and common areas. Communal dining has been discontinued and all meals must be delivered to the resident’s room. RCH’s activities department continues to find creative ways to engage residents, with personal visits, visits from RCH’s two foster dogs from Husky House in Matawan, and use of the home’s live-feed camera to broadcast spiritual services, exercise, and other events from the multipurpose room to residents’ in-room televisions. Community outreach continues at a distance and are posted on social media to comfort families and keep spirits up. Activities include a visit from the Easter Bunny, virtual Tai Chi and Country Fair Day. For more information, visit reformedchurchhome.com. Contact Kathy Chang at kchang@newspapermediagroup.com.

would work to systematically ensure that we are monitoring the progress on different performance indicators that would show our investments of funds were having the intended results. And lastly, I have the ability to use data to drive decisions. Even in circumstances where I’m not necessarily an expert on a particular topic, I’m very proficient in gathering the right information, as well as the data that will help to drive the decision, and I can pull all that information together and successfully articulate why I make the decisions that I make. “While delivering health care is not the same as delivering education, I do feel that the skills that I have will translate well into this role. Education, like health care, is a service whose success is described by facts and figures, as well as the qualitative aspects of the experience. I look forward to giving my time, experience and expertise to serve the borough by advocating and representing for our community,” Pieloch said during her interview. After all eight candidates were interviewed, the board went into executive (closed) session to discuss which candidate would be appointed to the open seat. When the board members returned before the public, Pieloch was nominated for the position and her nomination was approved by all members present. Pieloch’s term will run through the end of the year, Dec. 31, and appear on the Nov. 3 ballot as a one-year, unexpired term. Following the board’s vote, board President Anthony Esposito welcomed Pieloch to her new position and thanked her and the other candidates for applying. “Danielle, thank you so much for putting your name forth and I want to thank all the other nominees,” Esposito said. “It’s not an easy thing to do, but welcome aboard. You’ll meet people who will do their best to make sure you feel welcome and we’ll educate you as quickly as possible on the goings-on in the district. [Superintendent of Schools Richard] Labbe and his team are amazing. Welcome to our family.”

Novenas Miraculous Invocation to St. Therese O Glorious St. Therese, whom Almighty God has raised up to aid and inspire the human family, I implore your Miraculous Intercession. You are so powerful in obtaining every need of body and spirit from the Heart of God. Holy Mother Church proclaims you “Prodigy of Miracles... the Greatest Saint of Modern Times. Now I fervently beseech you to answer my petition (mention here) and to carry out your promises of spending Heaven doing good upon earth... Of letting fall from Heaven a Shower of Roses. Little Flower, give me your childlike faith, to see the Face of God in the people and experiences of my life, and to love God with full confidence. St. Therese, my Carmelite Sister, I will fulfill your plea “to be made known everywhere and I will continue to lead others to Jesus through you. Amen.

R.G. St. Therese Novena O little Therese of the Child Jesus, please pick for me a rose from the heavenly gardens and send it to me as a message of love. O little Flower of Jesus, ask God today to grant the favors I now place with confidence in your hands.. (mention specific requests) St. Therese, help me to always believe as you did, in God’s great love for me, so that I might imitate your “Little Way each day. Amen.

PRAYER IS POWERFUL Oh, most beautiful flower of Mount Carmel, fruitful vine of splendor of Heaven, Blessed Mother of the son of God, Immaculate Virgin, assist me in my necessity. Oh, Star of the Sea, help me and show me herein you are my Mother. Oh, Holy Mary Mother of God, Queen of Heaven and Earth! I humbly beseech you from the bottom of my heart to succor me in this petition. There are none that can withstand your power. Oh, show me herein you are my Mother. Oh Mary conceived without sin pray for us who have recourse in thee (3Xs). Holy Mother, I place this cause in your hands (3Xs). Holy Spirit, you who solve all problems, light all roads so I can attain my goal. You who gave me the divine gift to forgive and forget all evil against me and that in all instances in my life you are with me, I want in this short prayer to thank you for all things as you confirm once again that I never want to be separated from you in eternal glory. Thank you for your mercy towards me and mine. + Say this prayer 3 consecutive days and publish prayer after petition is granted. Do not despair. Additional advice and petition. Pray the Rosary regularly. F.A.M.

Prayer to St. Jude Most holy Apostle St. Jude, faithful servant and friend of Jesus the name of the traitor who delivered the beloved Master into the hands of His enemies, has caused you to be forgotten by many but the Church honors and prays to you universally as the patron of hopeless cases, of things despaired of. Pray for me who am so miserable; make use I implore you of that particular privilege accorded to you to bring visible and speedy help, where help is almost despaired of. Come to my assistance in this great need that I may receive the consolations and help of Heaven in all my necessities, tribulations and sufferings particularly (here make your request) and that I may bless God with you and all the elect forever. I PROMISE you, blessed St. Jude to be ever mindful of this great favor and I will never cease to honor you as my special and powerful patron and to do all in my power to encourage devotion to you. Amen. May the most just, most high and most adorable Will of God be in all things done, praised and magnified, forever and ever. Amen.
