Students back in classrooms on all five MCVTS campuses

I

son Mendelson of the MCPO determined Valvo authored and sent the email, which contained profanities and racial epithets, to Brown, according to the allegations. “Let me be clear: hate has no home in New Jersey, and we will prosecute to the fullest extent of the law those who seek to harm, harass, or intimidate others through their racist actions,” Attorney General Gurbir S. Grewal said in the statement.

n-person classes have resumed on all five campuses of the Middlesex County Vocational and Technical Schools. Since April 19, both academic and career-education classes have been held in person, although students still have the option of virtual education. Since September, career-education classes had been held in person five days a week, while academic classes were virtual. Students now are attending half-day sessions five days a week on the East Brunswick, Perth Amboy and Piscataway campuses for both career and academic classes. They are dismissed at noon and, after a break for lunch, have one more virtual class in the afternoon, according to information provided by the school district. “MCVTS welcomes our students to in-person education,” Superintendent of Schools Dianne Veilleux said in the statement. “This pandemic has reminded us of the crucial role of the interaction between teachers and students. Our students and staff have worked relentlessly to continue public education and have done tremendously creative and amazing things over the past year. “Restoring our school community with all its joys and adventures has been a work of love for all of us here,” she added. “High school students working collaboratively can make miracles happen in our schools. Career technical education relies on experiential learning, and it has persisted and thrived throughout this most challenging year.” Assistant Superintendent of Schools Jeffrey Bicsko said all state guidelines regarding the wearing of masks and social distancing are being followed. The Ghosts of Gettysburg live on Civil War battlefield

W

hen Jacob Alexander Sipe returned to Gettysburg, Pa., to pay homage to his dead Civil War comrades, something strange happened to him. He heard the faint cries of the dead 40,000 men buried there and saw an apparition of a dead Union soldier cross before him. It was not the first time visitors heard the sounds and saw the ghost of a Union or Confederate soldier walking the battlefield. Many of Sipe’s old Fourth Pennsylvania Cavalry buddies experienced the same thing. And nearly a century later, former President Dwight D. Eisenhower, who had retired to Gettysburg, trusted a colleague not to tell anyone what he saw and heard. Jacob Sipe is my great-great-grandfather who entrusted his experience to my mother when she was only 10 years old. She used to ride with him in his horse and buggy and he told her they were going to Oklahoma. Shortly thereafter, Sipe, a farmer by trade, would pull up at his patch of land and both would retrieve strawberries, tomatoes and potatoes. Jacob had survived four years in the nation’s bloodiest war. So many Union and Confederate soldiers were killed at Gettys-

Tittel, advocate for environmental causes, retires from Sierra Club

J

eff Tittel, the director of the Sierra Club’s New Jersey Chapter, retired as of May 1. According to a press release, for nearly 23 years Tittel has been an advocate for the environment. He has been involved in every major piece of environmental legislation that has been passed in New Jersey since 1998. Tittel worked for the passage of the following legislation: • Saving Sterling Forest – This 25-year battle resulted in one of the most significant open space victories in the nation. Ultimately, 20,000 acres of forest were saved in one of the largest coalitions of environmental groups and government entities ever assembled; • The New Jersey Highlands Act – 2004: The Highlands Water Protection and Plan-

ning Act is a landmark piece of legislation that put critical protections in place for one of New Jersey’s most environmentally sensitive and ecologically important areas; • New Jersey’s Clean Car Program – 2004: Sometimes characterized as New Jersey’s “first major climate response bill,” the program brings New Jersey in line with California’s automobile emissions requirements, which are the strictest in the nation; • Global Warming Response Act – 2007, updated 2019: Under this law, the New Jersey Department of Environmental Protection must assess the state’s greenhouse gas emissions, and find ways to reduce emissions by 80% by 2050; • Plastic bag ban – New Jersey’s bill is one of the most comprehensive in the country; • Banning fracking in the Delaware

Tittel worked closely with the Delaware Riverkeeper Network and the Water Defenders on the campaign that resulted in this decision. “I would like to thank everyone who I had the pleasure of working with over the years as New Jersey Sierra Club’s director and the accomplishments we made together,” Tittel was quoted as saying in the press release. “You have been part of my extended family and I will miss our camaraderie. “We worked from one end of New Jersey to the other and everywhere in between, whether it was working to protect the Pinelands, cleaning up toxic sites, protecting our parks, reducing climate change

impacts, saving open space in the Highlands, protecting our clean water and more. “Moving on was a hard decision. However, given that I have spent 51 years as an environmental activist and almost 23 years as the New Jersey chapter director, I felt it was time to make a change,” Tittel said. Rich Isaac, chair of the Sierra Club’s New Jersey Chapter, said, “Jeff has worked tirelessly in Trenton working to protect our state’s clean air, water and soil, to fight for the rights of people living in overburdened communities and to combat climate change. He will leave some very big shoes to fill.” Tittel co-founded Empower NJ, a 120plus member coalition that is working to stop new fossil fuel infrastructure projects in New Jersey, according to the press release.

H ealth & F itness Saint Peter’s University Hospital receives Clinical Healthy Work Environment Award

S

aint Peter’s University Hospital, a member of Saint Peter’s Healthcare System, is the recipient of the 2021 Clinical Healthy Work Environment Award presented by Sigma Theta Tau, an organization that empowers nursing leaders to transform global healthcare. The award recognizes and honors a clinical facility that demonstrates commitment in promoting a healthy work environment and excellence in healthcare outcomes, according to information provided by Saint Peter’s. Applicants for this award were evaluated based on the creation of a healthy work environment as demonstrated by new programs with involvement of frontline healthcare workers and sustained programming addressing healthcare workers’ needs, along with evidence of positive patient outcomes, according to the statement. “At Saint Peter’s we minister to the whole person, body and spirit, something that is exemplified everyday by

our extraordinary nursing staff,” Leslie D. Hirsch, FACHE, president and chief executive officer, Saint Peter’s Healthcare System, said in the statement. “I think that was truly demonstrated throughout the pandemic when many nurses were redeployed to new assignments, adjusting to new responsibilities and new supervisors, yet always responding to the challenges with grace and determination to care for our most critically ill patients.” During the COVID-19 pandemic, the staff requested a forum to share their experiences and with the support of Saint Peter’s Vice President of Patient Care Services and Chief Nursing Officer Linda Carroll, MSN, RN-BC, a nurse driven support group known as “Masks Off” was created. This forum provided a safe place for staff to discuss the novel experiences that the pandemic experience presented, allowing them to share emotions and insights with others who were experiencing the same thing, according to the statement. The positive benefits were seen in the way

the program impacted the emotional wellbeing of the clinical staff. The hospital is also committed to the visibility and representation of nursing leadership on many levels including its presence on the Board of Governors. In addition, weekly chief nursing officer/director unit rounds are practiced, as well as director/nurse manager rounds, enabling leadership to be physically present to support staff. Visibility of nursing leadership has had a direct impact on staff engagement and satisfaction, according to the statement. Further evidence that the well-being and resiliency of the nursing staff is valued and supported by hospital leadership includes the establishment of relaxation areas for staff, according to the statement. “The Sanctuary,” created by volunteers from nursing and the medical staff during the height of the COVID-19 pandemic, remains space designed to help staff escape from the demands of the day – to re-energize – which is critical to managing

stress. It offers interior and exterior space with lounge and massage chairs, hammocks, music, aromatherapy and a tea cart for staff to enjoy. In addition, a Sanctuary satellite opened on one of the hospital’s clinical care areas to provide easy access for nursing staff. “I have spent my entire career as a nurse at Saint Peter’s,” Linda Carroll, MSN, RN-BC, vice president of Patient Care Services and chief nursing officer, said in the statement. “My longevity here is a testament to Saint Peter’s culture of excellence and Catholic mission of caring for and ministering to our patients and to one another, and to our commitment in promoting a healthy work environment, excellence in healthcare outcomes and ongoing education. I am extremely proud to have been a member of the Saint Peter’s nursing staff for more than 30 years and to lead an exemplary nursing staff with whom I share a special comradery and dedication to our craft.”

Nursing excellence at Saint Peter’s is reflected by a host of accolades the team has received, according to the statement: * Saint Peter’s University Hospital has been re-designated as a Magnet hospital by the American Nurses Credentialing Center of the American Nurses Association for 2020-24, making Saint Peter’s one of only five hospitals worldwide to receive this designation for six consecutive terms. Magnet recognition is the highest honor for nursing service excellence that any hospital can receive. * Saint Peter’s critical care nursing unit has been a recipient of the Beacon Award for Critical Care Excellence from the American Association of Critical Care Nurses. The award recognizes hospitals that utilize evidence-based practices to improve patient outcomes and a healthy

work environment for nurses. At Saint Peter’s, Beacon recipients include the Adult Intensive Care Unit, a five-time recipient; the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU), a three-time recipient and the first NICU in New Jersey to receive this award; and the Cardiac Progressive Care Unit, a firsttime recipient. * U.S. News & World Report ranked The Children’s Hospital at Saint Peter’s University Hospital among the top 50 hospitals in the nation for Neonatology. Saint Peter’s was the only hospital in New Jersey to receive this prestigious honor two years in a row. * Saint Peter’s earned an “A” 2020 Hospital Safety Grade, a comprehensive, peer-reviewed rating developed by The Leapfrog Group to evaluate hospitals on how well they protect patients from preventable errors, injuries and infections. Published twice annually, the grades also

account for process measures that promote patient safety and the results of patient experience surveys. * Saint Peter’s has earned the AgeFriendly Health System designation as part of the Age-Friendly Health System initiative. The John A. Hartford Foundation and the Institute for Healthcare Improvement, in partnership with the American Hospital Association and the Catholic Health Association of the United States, are helping hospitals and other care settings implement a set of evidencebased interventions specifically designed to improve care for older adults. * Saint Peter’s ranks among the top three hospitals in the state for patient experience as measured by HCAHPS for “Best Possible Hospital” and “Likelihood to Recommend.” * The nursing leadership at Saint Peter’s actively supports the work of the

Organization of Nurse Leaders of New Jersey (ONL NJ), a coalition that took the lead in addressing the principles of a healthy work environment by developing Nursing Workplace Environment and Staffing Councils (NWESC) across the state. “We are proud of our success in transforming our work environment into an organization where nurses understand they are valued, safe and supported by every level of the organization, from peer to manager to senior leadership,” Lisa Drumbore, vice president of Marketing and Communications, Chief Patient Experience officer at Saint Peter’s, said in the statement. TV’s Greatest Comedy Duo Andy Griffith And Don Knotts By Matt Roush, ReMIND Magazine

T

here’s nothing I love more than great comic chemistry, that magical spark between two performers who bring out the best in each other. TV has so many great examples of brilliant partnerships, but when asked to name who I considered to be the top TV comedy duo of all time, my mind went to a fictional place that still feels so real — Mayberry, North Carolina — and the buddy lawmen of The Andy Griffith Show: Sheriff Andy Taylor (Griffith), that paragon of rural calm, and his hilariously excitable Deputy Barney Fife (Don Knotts). “You could say there’s three reasons why there’s so little crime in Mayberry,” Barney once declared with typically boastful and delusional bravado. “There’s Andy, and there’s me, and [as he pats his typically unloaded gun] baby makes three.”

Never mind that Barney’s inability to shoot straight meant he carried only a single bullet, which he kept in his front shirt pocket. “Baby” aside, it really only took two to make The Andy Griffith Show an instant 1960s classic, with the cocky and halfcocked Barney relying on the wry serenity of his best friend “Ange” to tame his neuroses. In one of the best examples of their unique collaboration from the first season, “Andy Saves Barney’s Morale,” Barney wildly oversteps when put in charge as acting sheriff, and in just eight hours locks up nearly everyone in town — including Aunt Bee! Barney’s puffed up with pride until, inevitably, he realizes he’s become a laughingstock. Knotts runs the gamut of emotion from power-trip glee to humiliated dejection until Andy, wiser than all, reminds everyone how fond they truly are of Barney — no one more than Andy himself. Which is the genius of the Andy-and-

Barney comedy duo, a depiction of genuine friendship and, in Griffith’s case especially, a generosity of spirit to play straight man to such a scene-stealing dynamo, with Knotts winning a record five Emmys as best supporting actor. (As is often the case, by underplaying, however warmly, Griffith was never even nominated.) They’d worked together earlier, in the Broadway and film versions of the 1950s hit No Time for Sergeants, which propelled Griffith to stardom as a broadly played country rube who’s drafted into the Air Force. Knotts later honed his nervous-man persona on TV as an ensemble member of The Steve Allen Show. It didn’t take Griffith long to realize that

T the show’s success would lie in him toning t down his own aw-shucks shtick and giving s Knotts free combustible rein as Barney. p In Daniel de Visé’s book Andy and Don: The Making of a Friendship and a A Classic American TV Show, Griffith says, c “To be a straight man is a wonderful posi- f tion. … I’m between the camera and you s on most shots and I’m closer to Don’s eyes than you can ever be. There’s no more joy than that, I can tell you right now.” For Knotts, quoted in the same book, “I could see sometimes in Andy’s eyes that he was trying to keep from laughing, which would help me try to be even funnier. And Andy was like the ultimate O straight man. He was the best you could S o imagine.” One reason we treasure their teamwork s so much is that it was never allowed to wear out its welcome. Knotts, who unlike R Griffith had no financial stake in the show a and sought greener pastures in movies (including The Incredible Mr. Limpet and 1 The Ghost and Mr. Chicken), left after five 5 seasons, though he would return as a guest 7 in later seasons and for the 1986 TV-movie b reunion, when Barney again is acting i sheriff. Little wonder he couldn’t keep away. p c For many of us, there’s no place like Mayberry, which was never in better hands j T than when Andy and Barney kept the w peace.

Why isn’t ‘MacGyver’ coming back next season? Question: Why is CBS canceling MacGyver? It’s a great show and we love the cast. —Pat R Matt Roush: The show dropped by more than 20% from season to season in the demos and viewership, but it’s far from a ratings disaster. It’s more likely that CBS looked at its development slate for next season, and as they’ve done in the past, opted to retire some shows in favor of promising new ones that could refresh and reinvigorate the schedule. These calls aren’t made lightly, and they know fans are never happy when a show goes off the air. And given CBS’s involvement in producing the series, it seems unlikely anyone would pick up these procedurals. With nearly 100 episodes produced, I imagine this will have an afterlife in streaming and syndication.

Question: A quick, simple question: Do you think American Housewife has any hope of being renewed? —Mark Matt Roush: Most observers see this sitcom as being “on the bubble,” so it could go either way — which means there’s hope, but we probably won’t know for sure until next month. Once again, if the network doesn’t renew it, the blame goes to the producers for leaving storylines dangling. If they think that’s going to force the network’s hand, they’re often sadly mistaken. “We have zero tolerance for acts of bias and hate in the Garden State, and I commend Middlesex Prosecutor Yolanda Ciccone, the MCPO, and the OBPD for their successful investigation, identifying the alleged actor who targeted Councilperson Brown last month with a vile, racist and threatening email.” “I commend all the law enforcement agencies for their professional and successful investigation. The MCPO has a proud tradition of zero tolerance for any acts of bias and hate,” Ciccone said in the statement. Brown, one of two Democrats on the Township Council and the only member of color on the dais, received the letter on March 7. She began her first term in 2018. A member of the public read in full the email at a Township Council meeting on March 9, which called Brown a “whining” derogatory name, and the email continued using the derogatory name referring to Black people and was not sure how Brown was elected to a position in a Republican

township, according to past reports in the Suburban. During prior council meetings, Brown had expressed concerns about feeling threatened from other members on the dais. She did not appear in person at a council meeting on March 23 because she was told she was not allowed to bring her own security to the meeting. At the time, Mayor Owen Henry had said “any speech, whether written or spoken, in which any type of racial epithet or slur is included, is unacceptable, inappropriate and condemnable. “I immediately instructed that all warranted resources be committed to identify the author or group responsible for composing and sending such an offensive document,” he said. “Additionally, I have requested that appropriate outside law enforcement agencies be contacted to assist as required. Given that this is an open and continuing investigation, I am not at liberty to discuss details of the investigation and/ or matters related to it.” After the announcement on April 28, Henry praised township and county law enforcement for working together and apprehending the suspect. “I want to thank the MCPO and their

May 5, 2021M

investigators and the township’s police department and their investigators in working together to locate and arrest the suspect,” Henry said a statement. “When I was first made aware of the hateful email, I immediately advised then-Chief Volkert to use all available resources, including joining with any and all law enforcement agencies, to track the email to ensure that the person responsible for this reprehensible act would be found and prosecuted. “While the past few weeks have been difficult, I know that the entire Township Council joins me in thanking all those involved in the investigation and ultimate arrest. Under advice of counsel, we were told not to comment on the email and investigation so that the investigators would not be thwarted in their effort to apprehend the culprit. Now that has become a reality. We thank you for a job well done.” The investigation is active and continuing. Anyone with information should call Dugan at 732-721-5600 or Mendelson at 732-745-8382. • Kathy Chang and Jennifer Amato contributed to this report.

Not Quite Finished By Paul Hall

I

enjoyed Mortal Kombat the video game long ago (early 1990s). I didn’t win much — my brothers usually got to hear the call of “Finish Him” when fighting me, but it definitely was a brothers bonding thing without breaking the tables, which made my mom happy. Now a new theatrical release of Mortal Kombat is ready to bring the battle back to the big screen. Cole Young (Lewis Tan) is fighting in underground cage matches to provide for his family when he meets Jax (Mehcad Brooks). Enter Sub-Zero (Joe Taslim), who brings with him a chilly desire to eliminate both Cole and Jax. While Jax stays to battle this intense opponent, Cole heads off to find Sonya Blade (Jessica McNamee) and attempts to put some perspective on the strange sequence of events. Cole’s birthmark is the key; it indicates

what he has inside him and makes him part of an elite club that includes champions of the Earthrealm who are recruited for an ultimate battle against the Outworld inhabitants and their supernatural powers. But are they ready for the brutality that awaits? I immediately wanted to know how the fight sequences would play out, as I didn’t expect much backstory for our characters. I was pleased when Director Simon McQuoid took a brief amount of time to give us just a taste of character background without bogging down the progression to the action that drives Kombat. It’s that taste of the details that allows us to connect with some characters while leaving us wanting from others. Mortal Kombat is loaded with battles, many of them head-to-head as if you were fighting your brother, at least in my case. The fights are like a beautifully choreographed dance in detailed environments. Oh, and the end kills are every bit

as brutal as in the game and not for the weak-stomached. Kombat is an R-rated film, and as such it can take the conclusions of battles and ramp them up to an extreme. It earns its rating. Finally there are the one-liners. Your favorite game phrases from “Finish Him” to “Flawless” are there. Mortal Kombat is by no means a great film by any measuring stick, but it was exactly what I hoped it would be. I was transported into the world of video games

that had my younger brothers being able to kill me, but it was the good times, and the tears, of those days that I remember most while hearing the phrase — “Finish him.” Paul’s Grade: BMortal Kombat Rated R Stars: Lewis Tan, Jessica McNamee, Josh Lawson, Joe Taslim, Mehcad Brooks Director: Simon McQuoid

ON THE ROAD PETER PERROTTA

2021 Cadillac CT5 V-Series

I

f you live in New Jersey you already know that when it comes to cars and music our biggest ambassador is The Boss himself – Mr. Bruce Springsteen. One of the many gems he penned was Pink Cadillac. A small bit of that song proclaims: “I love you for your pink Cadillac. Crushed velvet seats. Riding in the back. Cruising down the street. Waving to the girls. Feeling out of sight. Spending all my money. On a Saturday night.” Wow! The vision you get from that song is almost perfect. But that was then when the brand was noted for being the ultimate big cruiser mobile. The 2021 Cadillac brand has morphed into something a lot more performance and technology oriPeter Perrotta ented than what it once was. The new Escalade is a technological wonder, featuring one of the world’s most advanced infotainment screens. Last year, Cadillac stuffed its former CTS sedan and replaced it with the CT5 – a more sculpted version with a sportier stance. And, this year, it pivoted even more in the direction of offering a more performance lineup by coming out with the CT5 V-Series sedan. The CT5 V-series sedan features a high output 3.0 liter twin turbo V-6 engine which uses low inertia turbochargers to enhance power production across the rpm band. It is rated at 360 horsepower and 405 pound feet of torque. Cribbing from the press release offered by Cadillac on the new CT5: “CT5 recasts the concept of American luxury with a distinctive fusion design, performance and comfort, supported by the brand’s latest technologies.” I recently jumped behind the wheel of the 2021 Cadillac CT5 V-series for one week to see where this fairly new offering stands among its competition in this segment. The problem is this segment of the sports sedan market features some stiff competition – namely the BMW 3 series,

2021 Cadillac CT5 V-Series

Mercedes C class and the Audi A-5. The folks at Car and Driver said: “When compared with its rivals the CT5 doesn’t have the sharpest reflexes or the poshest cabin, but its handsome styling helps it stand out from the crowd.” In this case the CT5’s main rivals are all German imports. So, does the CT5 V-series drive like a German import with its stickto-the-road handling? Absolutely not. The CT5 V-series has its own personality. Overall, I would say that the CT5 Vseries is a good-looking sports sedan with plenty of Wow! factor. It is fast enough to make it an exciting ride and luxurious enough to impress. Personally, I found it to be comfortable in the fit category, albeit I could have used a tad more leg room. Its interior ergonomics are good and its infotainment system works well and isn’t confusing to use. Here’s the rub with the CT5 V series. It doesn’t handle like a German import performance sports sedan. What I mean by that is that in the ride and handling department you get a much different feel than a 3 series BMW or a C

class Mercedes. The BMW and C Class give you a tight handling ride you can take through some hairpin turns at high speeds in confidence, and like most European cars, you feel the road under you a bit more. If you harken back to Springsteen’s vision, the DNA of the Cadillac just isn’t the same. If you are looking for that Euro sports car feel then the CT5 V-series just may not be for you. But, if you are more comfortable with a bit of a softer, more pillowy ride that still gives you some power pizzaz, then the CT5 may just be the ride for you. The all wheel drive CT5 V-series sedan I drove carries a base sticker price of $47,795. With added options and $995 for destination and delivery the bottom line sticker price on my tester came in at $65,445. Added options included: $6,290 for the Platinum Package; $5,290 for the Premium Package; $2,000 for the all wheel drive; $1,950 for driver assist and advanced security; $635 for Satin Steel metallic paint and $500 for the driver awareness plus package.

The Platinum Package includes: an ultraview sunroof; leather seats and a parking package. The Premium Package includes: lighting package; navigation and Bose premium; climate package and a technology package. The EPA fuel consumption rating for this model comes in at 21 miles per gallon overall – 26 mpg in highway driving and 18 mpg in city driving. The EPA estimates that it will cost about $2,300 a year in fuel expenditures to run that CT5 as it uses about 4.8 gallons of gas per every 100 miles you drive it. In the government’s 5-star safety ratings it did not get an overall score yet or a score for the frontal crash test. It received 5 stars for the rollover test and 5 stars for the side crash test. Later this year, Cadillac will introduce the “Super Cruise” feature for the CT5 V series. It will be the world’s first true hands free driver assistance feature.

COMMUNITY BULLETIN BOARD By Damian Holbrook Cheers to Law & Order‘s Arresting Reunion. Millions of L&O fans were material witnesses to the illegal amount of chemistry between SVU’s Mariska Hargitay (pictured) and Christopher Meloni when their ex-partners Olivia Benson and Elliot Stabler paired up again after 10 years apart to launch Meloni’s Organized Crimes spinoff. Talk about packing heat! Jeers to Wonky Covid protocols across the dial. Top Chef sometimes socially distances the judges, but the contestants are in each other’s grills. On SNL, the only time the cast covers up is during promos (Kid Cudi, Carey Mulligan and Kenan Thompson, pictured) and their final goodbyes after being in skits together all night long.

Mixing angst and optimism, TBS’s wry sitcom starring Saturday Night Live vet Nasim Pedrad as an awkwardly thirsty 14-year-old Persian boy bent on high-school popularity is so universally relatable we can’t help but cringe and crack up. Jeers to Design Star: Next Gen for being too abbreviated. And we don’t mean the shortened title. We mean the paltry six episodes that streamer Discovery+ gave to its stellar reboot of the competition that bestowed winning designer Carmeon Hamilton (pictured) with her own show. Less isn’t always more.

The Sayreville Historical Society is planning three Night at the Museum events. The first on April 8 honored the history of industry in Sayreville. The May 13 event will honor police, fire and EMTs. The June 10 night will honor veterans. In addition to regular displays there will be special displays depicting each of the honored groups. The programs are open to the public and admission is free. Masks will be required and all COVID-19 protocols will be
