Cittadino named county Superintendent of the Year By KATHY CHANG Staff Writer

O

ld Bridge Schools Superintendent David Cittadino has been named the 2020 Middlesex County Superintendent of the Year through the Middlesex County Association of School Administrators (MCASA). Assistant Superintendent Kathleen Hoeker announced the news at a Board of

Education meeting on May 19. She said under Cittadino’s leadership, the district has moved forward, advancing programs and making difficult decisions in the face of adversity. “He supports those in need and made me a better leader,” Hoeker said. Cittadino is a well respected veteran, who “has clearly made contributions to the school district he leads as well as his colleagues,” said Scott Taylor, president of

the MCASA. “He has forcefully advocated on his kids’ behalf through the things he shares with our group, and he does it humorously.” Cittadino said he was proud to accept the award on behalf of the Old Bridge Schools community. “Like any of the many accolades this district has received over the past few (Continued on page 6)

candidate seeking a full three-year term on the Sayreville Borough Council has been appointed to the governing body to serve out the remainder of a one-year term. On May 26, council members appointed Vince Conti to fill a vacant seat on the governing body. The vacancy was created by the departure of former Councilman Dave McGill, who resigned from his position on May 15 for personal reasons. As McGill is a Democrat, the Sayreville Democratic Organization nominated individuals to succeed him on the Borough Council and complete the remainder of his term. The nominees were presented before the governing body on May 26. Council President Mary Novak made a motion to appoint Conti to the council, which was seconded by Councilman Damon Enriquez and approved by Novak, Enriquez and council members Kevin Dalina, Michele Maher and Donna Roberts. Once Conti’s appointment was approved, he was officially sworn in to the Borough Council by Borough Clerk Jessica Morelos. The term currently held by Conti was originally held by Mayor Victoria Kilpatrick, who stepped down from the council in January after she was elected mayor. McGill, a former councilman who previously served from 2013-15 and again in 2018, was first appointed to serve out the remainder of the term. Conti will now fill his seat, which will expire at the end of the year, Dec. 31. Conti is one of the Democratic candidates seeking two available three-year terms on the Nov. 3 ballot, along with Novak. If elected, he will continue to serve on

Indian Muslim community members in New Jersey raised funds for the donation of 15,000 pieces of PPE (personal protective equipment) to first responders, according to information provided by the IAMC. As a part of the drive, the funds were collected over a six-hour online fundraiser where IAMC executives made calls to the donors and community members. The PPE was distributed at St. Michael’s Medical Center in Newark, Hackensack Meridian Health JFK Medical Center in Edison, and many police departments across Central New Jersey. “This pandemic has brought out the best of humanity, and every life saved is taking us close to saving the mankind” Mudassir Ansari, general secretary of IAMC-NJ, said in the statement. “Safeguarding our first responders is our first and foremost duty.” IAMC volunteer Iqbal Mohammed said, “We are honored and privileged to be able to recognize the efforts of our towns’ front lines. SAYREVILLE – The Sayreville Borough Council has introduced a $62.7 million budget to fund the operation of the municipality during 2020. The budget was introduced by council members on May 11. A public hearing on the budget is scheduled for June 8 at 7 p.m. The council may adopt the budget that evening. The $62.7 million budget, which can be amended prior to its final adoption, will be supported by the collection of $33.8 million in taxes from residential and commercial property owners, according to the budget document. Other revenue includes $9.274 million in state aid and $3.56 million from surplus funds (savings). Sayreville’s 2019 budget totaled $61.44 million and was supported by the collection of $32.7 million in taxes from property owners, according to the 2020 budget

document. Other revenue included $9.27 million in state aid and $3.1 million from surplus funds. The municipal tax rate in 2019 was about $1.425 per $100 of assessed valuation. The average home in Sayreville was assessed at $144,724 and the owner of that home paid about $2,062 in municipal taxes. In 2020, the average home assessment is estimated to decrease to $145,024. The 2020 municipal tax rate and the amount property owners will pay in municipal taxes has not yet been provided by borough officials. Municipal taxes are one component of a property owner’s tax bill, which also includes Middlesex County taxes and Sayreville School District taxes. Individuals pay more or less in taxes depending on the assessed value of their home and/or property, and the tax rate that is set by each taxing entity.

trators representing 25 school districts in Middlesex County. Cittadino was named superintendent in Old Bridge on July 1, 2013, replacing interim superintendent Timothy Brennan. Prior to the top role, he held several positions in Old Bridge, including principal, vice principal roles at Jonas Salk Middle School, principal at Old Bridge High School, and assistant superintendent. Cittadino began his career in education at the Theodore Roosevelt Middle School in the Elizabeth Public School District in February 1997 as a sixth grade teacher. In November 2003, he was named the school disciplinarian with the Elizabeth Public School District where he remained until December 2005 before coming to Old Bridge.

Mayor joins businesses in demand to reopen By KATHY CHANG Staff Writer

OLD BRIDGE – The mayor of Old Bridge has joined with the township’s local business owners in their demand to reopen their business establishments. “The township and the local business owners recognize that small businesses are not only the backbone of our community and drive the local economy, but they are equally important to the nation’s economy,” Mayor Owen Henry said. “The local business community provides access to and delivers essential services to our residents.” In an effort to support and assist local businesses, the township has established a Business Advisory Committee led by the township’s Office of Economic Development, which will be working directly with the township’s business community. “We are certain a safe, efficient and productive reopening can and should be allowed by modifying the [Gov. Phil Murphy’s] oppressive and unconstitutional ‘orders’ that permits all businesses to immediately reopen,” he said. “A well-orchestrated and executed process that will necessarily include the many impacted businesses can be implemented to allow people to restore their livelihood and right to work.” Henry said he is confident in the business owners’ ability to implement, post and abide by reasonable guidelines that may be suggested by the Centers of Disease Control and Prevention and others regarding specific businesses wishing to reopen. “The forced closures are presenting business owners with an unprecedented and unfair burden,” he said. “They need

PRAYER IS POWERFUL Oh, most beautiful flower of Mount Carmel, fruitful vine of splendor of Heaven, Blessed Mother of the son of God, Immaculate Virgin, assist me in my necessity. Oh, Star of the Sea, help me and show me herein you are my Mother. Oh, Holy Mary Mother of God, Queen of Heaven and Earth! I humbly beseech you from the bottom of my heart to succor me in this petition. There are none that can withstand your power. Oh, show me herein you are my Mother. Oh Mary conceived without sin pray for us who have recourse in thee (3Xs). Holy Mother, I place this cause in your hands (3Xs). Holy Spirit, you who solve all problems, light all roads so I can attain my goal. You who gave me the divine gift to forgive and forget all evil against me and that in all instances in my life you are with me, I want in this short prayer to thank you for all things as you confirm once again that I never want to be separated from you in eternal glory. Thank you for your mercy towards me and mine. + Say this prayer 3 consecutive days and publish prayer after petition is granted. Do not despair. Additional advice and petition.
